The assessment of developmental stability in hybrids can provide valuable information in the study of species formation because it allows an evaluation of the degree of incompatibility of genetic systems that control developmental processes. The present study assessed the impact of two hybridization events, assumed to have occurred at different times, on developmental instability in the ground beetle Carabus solieri . Developmental instability was estimated in 678 individuals from 27 populations from the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) levels of four morphological traits: the tibia length of middle and hind legs, which are functional structures, and the length and the proximal width of the hind wings, which are vestigial and thus nonfunctional structures. Significant variations of FA levels between populations were shown only for the wing width. For this trait, FA levels in hybrids were higher than in their parental entities for both hybridization events, indicating a significant divergence of the gene systems controlling development between the parental entities in the two hybridization cases. As expected, wing traits exhibited FA levels at least three times higher than leg trait. The role of fluctuating asymmetry as an indicator of fitness to females in mate choice remains controversial. Previous studies indicated that male medflies with symmetrical supra-fronto-orbital (SFO) bristles achieve relatively high mating success under laboratory conditions. Here we present data from field cage studies of wild collected medflies in Guatemala and Crete, which reveal the same association between fluctuating asymmetry in SFO bristle length and mating success as that seen in the laboratory. The experiments in Crete included males that were missing one or both of their bristles. A comparison of mating success between the three groups indicated that the mere presence of bristles did not exert a major influence. Analysis of attempted courtships suggests that the association between male mating success and FA in bristle length appears to be generated as a result of females being more likely to enter into courtships with symmetrical males, rather than through a rejection of asymmetrical males during or after it. This raises the possibility that the primary stimulus that makes a symmetrical male attractive is acting at too great a distance to depend on symmetry itself. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been widely used as a measure of developmental stability, and two recent meta-analyses suggest FA may be associated with several fitness components, including fecundity, growth rate and longevity. However, these studies have been strongly criticised on a number of grounds, and it was suggested that further evidence was required before the importance of any associations could be accurately assessed. Furthermore, studies should be of individual FA and fitness components. Here we investigated associations between individual FA of the mid and hind tibia and several fitness related traits (including fecundity, fertility, longevity and offspring development time) in female yellow dung flies ( Scathophaga stercoraria ). As in several previous studies, asymmetry could be discerned from measurement error and was FA. However, we found no significant associations between any measure of FA and any fitness component regardless of how the data were analysed. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been suggested as a measure of the sensitivity of development to a wide array of genetic and environmental stresses. It has been also suggested that antlers in red deer could be important during social and rutting displays. We used antler measurements of 51 males that were measured over subsequent seasons, from 3–8 years of age, and analysed three antler traits: antler weight, length, and the number of antler tines (antler size). We calculated absolute and relative FA. All three size traits were highly significantly intercorrelated. By contrast to this, the FA of the three traits, did not show such relationships. With increasing age, antler size and FA also increased. When testing the repeatability of FA and antler size, there was a principal difference in the pattern between FA and antler size, with the latter being much more consistent than the former. This suggests that antler size, not FA, may be a good predictor of the bearer's quality in mate selection. We studied fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in two generations of the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini . We used Procrustes analyses, which allow the comparison of dimensionless shapes of body sides. We found little (<4%) directional asymmetry in either sex. Of the two morphs occurring in this species, fighters, which possess a thickened third pair of legs, exhibited higher FA than did scramblers, the morph with unmodified legs; this may reflect the costliness of the fighter developmental pathway. There was a negative relationship between FA and female fecundity, but the regression slope of mid-offspring on mid-parent FA was not significantly greater than zero. We propose that heritability estimates can be biased downwards if highly asymmetric individuals produce fewer viable offspring. However, we found no significant association between parental FA and the proportion of viable embryos in their broods. Furthermore, we hypothesized that parental FA might indicate the presence of largely recessive mutations deleterious to developmental homeostasis that would cause increased embryo mortality under inbreeding. Habitat fragmentation has the potential to influence the development and thus the phenotype of organisms. The asymmetry of bilateral traits may be indicative of the extent to which developmental stability is compromised by the stressful conditions underlying fragmentation. Using an assemblage- and population-level approach, we explored asymmetry differences in tarsus and outermost tail feathers of birds inhabiting fragmented landscapes in the tropical Andes of Colombia. More than 2500 individuals of 185 species were mist-netted at nine forest sites representing continuous forest (> 1000 ha), medium- (70–110 ha), and small-sized (8–20 ha) fragments. Feathers showed true fluctuating asymmetry (FA), whereas tarsus presented a mixture of FA and directional asymmetry. Overall, asymmetry was lowest in continuous forest, and highest in small and medium fragments. These patterns remained unchanged when directionality and differences in species composition, abundance, and foraging tactics were considered. The population-level analyses showed a general trend of increased asymmetry variation in fragments, yet the responses were not always in the same direction. Increased asymmetry may represent an outcome of processes that contribute to the persistence of species in changing environments, and to the generation of phenotypic innovation, which suggests individual adjustments of development to deal with stress. Various, non-exclusive mechanisms have been invoked to explain the observed association between host plant use and speciation in insect species. In the Afrotropical genus Ceratitis (Diptera: Tephritidae), morphological, molecular, and biochemical data suggest that evolutionary radiation of stenophagous clades originates from their ability to exploit toxic hosts. To test whether, and to what extent, the development and fitness of Ceratitis fasciventris , a polyphagous congener known to infest over 43 host species, is adversely affected by host plant toxicity, we compared the rates of development, survival, and reproduction of captive bred individuals in four media that differ in alkaloid concentration. Despite reduced pupal and adult sizes, C. fasciventris larvae developing under low alkaloid concentrations successfully developed to the adult stage, probably as a result of accelerated pupation and ensuing restricted exposure to the toxic environment. High alkaloid concentrations, however, impaired their developmental process and prevented subsequent reproduction. Studies of hatching asynchrony have rarely assessed the effect of parental investment strategies on the development of intra-brood hierarchies using indicators of nestling quality. The influence of hatching asynchrony and other variables related to parental investment on immunocompetence was evaluated measuring T-cell mediated immune response in broods of red-billed choughs ( Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax ), a large long-living passerine with a pronounced sexual size dimorphism. The results showed that T-cell mediated immune response depends on parental effects as shown by the differences between broods on hatching asynchrony. Male nestlings were both heavier and larger than female nestlings, but there was no effect of hatching order on these traits, nor on sex differences in immunocompetence. Differential investment strategy in relation to laying order did not favour older offspring or either of the sexes. Successful reproduction in this species might be so unpredictable and infrequent that strategies of parental investment in the brood could have evolved to attempt to maximize the survival of all nestlings by avoiding within-brood hierachies of size, body condition, and immunocompetence.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 675–684.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is often, but controversially, viewed as an indicator of fitness and a target of selection. In the brook stickleback, Culaea inconstans (Kirtland), FA of the pectoral fins, which are the main source of propulsion, is inversely correlated with fecundity. We examined the hypothesis that asymmetry of the pectoral fins could affect locomotion in such a way as to influence foraging and niche use in prereproductive brook stickleback. Nitrogen and carbon stable isotope analysis showed the diet of symmetric and asymmetric males diverged with increasing body size. Larger symmetric males fed at higher trophic levels and had a diet based on carbon emanating from a more pelagic source than their asymmetric counterparts. Such effects were not observed in females or smaller males. The number of chironomid larvae found in the gut was greater on average in asymmetric than symmetric fish. The results from this study strongly suggest FA of pectoral fins affects the foraging behaviour of C. inconstans and that stable isotope analyses of individual phenotypes provides a useful tool for assessing the ecological consequences of FA.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 617–623.  相似文献

Podarcis bocagei and Podarcis carbonelli are two lacertid species endemic to the western Iberian Peninsula, and both show head size and shape sexual dimorphism. We studied immature and adult head sexual dimorphism and analysed ontogenetic trajectories of head traits with body and head size, aiming to shed light on the proximate mechanisms involved. Immatures were much less dimorphic than adults, but geometric morphometric techniques revealed that head shape sexual differences are already present at this stage. Males and females differed in allometry of all head characters with body size, with males showing a disproportionate increase of head size and dimensions. On the other hand, head dimensions and head shape changed with increasing head size following similar trends in both sexes, possibly indicating developmental restrictions. Gametic asymmetry implies that females invest more per gamete than males do and thus sperm is considered to be a relatively cheap resource. However, contrary to this classic view, sperm has been shown to be frequently in short supply; hence, selection favouring females that mate for fertility benefits should occur. For this reason, we determined whether males signalling fertility are preferred by female newts of the species Triturus alpestris . We performed paired female–male trials using unmated and previously inseminated females to determine potential criteria for female interest in a courting male, to establish what factors lead to successful mating and to assess the importance of female choice for direct and indirect benefits. We found that female interest in any potential mate and mating success decreased once mating had occurred. Furthermore, we detected an increase in spermatophore deposition rate and rapid spermatophore transfer in encounters that resulted in a successful mating. The results obtained indicate that female alpine newts are attracted to males showing signs of relatively high fertility and that females exhibit a decreased propensity to mate once initial sperm reserves have been acquired. The present study explored the effects of mixture of avermectin and imidacloprid on the level of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and mortality of Copera annulata larvae. The results showed that the mortality of larval damselflies treated with different concentrations of insecticide did not differ significantly. However, we found that the levels of FA of two traits were significantly different with different treatments but the others did not show any differences. Explicitly, FA of two traits increased with increasing pesticide concentration. There was a significantly negative relationship between first femur length and the absolute difference between its right and left sides. There was no relationship with respect to the absolute difference between the right and left sides of all traits and their body size. FA was not associated with mortality. Adaptive maternal cannibalism in snakes (Epicrates cenchria maurus, Boidae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In many animal species, mothers that produce stillborn offspring or undeveloped ova immediately ingest them. This cannibalism has been interpreted in two ways: (1) as a form of parental care (to prevent disease spreading to healthy littermates, and eliminate predator-attracting scent cues); or (2) to recycle otherwise wasted energy, thus facilitating maternal recovery. Our experimental study on captive Colombian rainbow boas ( Epicrates cenchria maurus ) provides the first quantitative support for this latter hypothesis. We show that by eating their non-viable offspring and undeveloped eggs, female boas can rapidly recycle a significant component of their otherwise wasted reproductive investment. Female boas that ingested non-viable progeny equivalent to half their litter mass exhibited rapid recovery of dorsal musculature and hence were able to constrict prey items more forcefully than were unfed females when tested 2 weeks after parturition. The consequent enhancement of constricting ability may influence maternal survival and foraging success. Symmetry is such a conspicuous feature of life that asymmetries draw our immediate attention. While not uncommon in bilateral organisms in general, asymmetry in spiders is rare. Here I report the first case of antisymmetry in external female genitalia in spiders, in the new genus Asygyna (Theridiidae: Araneae) from Madagascar. In the nearly 39 000 species of spiders described to date, the external structure of the female genitalia is symmetric. In entelegyne spiders paired external copulatory openings each lead to an internal copulatory duct, whose roughly symmetrical trajectories terminate in paired receptacles, the spermathecae. In Asygyna , here exemplified by two new species, A. huberi and A. coddingtoni , laterality is evident in the internal and external female genitalia. A single copulatory opening leads (either to the left or right depending on the individual) to a single copulatory duct with a distinctly asymmetric trajectory. The duct splits terminally shortly before entering the two spermathecae. The males are symmetric, but possibly only one palp can be used in copulation with each female. If adaptive, the selective forces behind this asymmetry are perplexing, as male access to females seems reduced. However, if males are plentiful, asymmetry may benefit the female by reducing insertion times and thus shortening copulation time, and by tightening her control over which males sire her offspring. Asygyna has a range of other bizarre sex-related morphologies, including prosomal pits and a well developed stridulatory mechanism in both sexes, a male proboscis, and simplified palps. Rhododendron (Ericaceae) is a large woody genus in which hybridization may play an important role in evolution and speciation, particularly in the Sino-Himalayan region, where many interfertile species often occur sympatrically. Natural hybridization between Rhododendron delavayi Franch. (=  R. arboreum ssp. delavayi ) and Rhododendron decorum Franch., which belong to different subsections of subgenus Hymenanthes, was investigated. Material of R. delavayi and R. decorum and their putative hybrids was collected from the wild. On the basis of morphology, chloroplast DNA, nuclear ribosomal DNA, and AFLP profiles, hybrids and parental species were identified. Hybridization occurred in both directions, but was asymmetrical, with R. delavayi as the major maternal parent in the hybrid zone. Most of the hybrids possessed intermediate phenotypes, and amongst the 15 hybrids detected were six F1s, two F2s, one first-generation backcross to R. delavayi , and two first-generation backcrosses to R. decorum . We tested whether fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in undisturbed populations is associated with several natural environmental factors and whether FA is negatively correlated with fitness in the wild. We compared the FA of multiple bony structural defences among 87 endemic populations of threespine stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) inhabiting pristine freshwater habitats on the islands of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada. Multi-trait FA for adults and juvenile fish varied extensively among populations, but only in adults did it correlate with geography and two habitat characteristics (pH and water colour). Mean FA among individual traits varied concordantly among populations but was not correlated within individuals. While asymmetrical fish showed slightly higher levels of parasitism as predicted, selection differentials based on age class comparisons suggested that asymmetrical fish had the same or marginally higher survival than symmetrical fish. Selection differentials of FA varied significantly among traits and may reflect variability in their functional importance and in the strength of selection on their developmental stability. The genome size of 51 populations of 20 species of the North American endemic sagebrushes (subgenus Tridentatae ), related species, and some hybrid taxa were assessed by flow cytometry, and were analysed in a phylogenetic framework. Results were similar for most Tridentatae species, with the exception of three taxonomically conflictive species:  Artemisia bigelovii Gray,  Artemisia pygmaea Gray, and  Artemisia rigida Gray. Genome size homogeneity (together with the high morphological, chemical, and karyological affinities, as well as low DNA sequence divergence) could support a recent diversification process in this geographically restricted group, thought to be built upon a reticulate evolutionary framework. The Tridentatae and the other North American endemic Artemisia show a significantly higher genome size compared with the other subgenera. Our comparative analyses including genome size results, together with different kinds of ecological and morphological traits, suggest an evolutionary change in lifestyle strategy linked to genome expansion, in which junk or selfish DNA accumulation might be involved. Conversely, weed or invasive behaviour in Artemisia is coupled with lower genome sizes. Data for both homoploid and polyploid hybrids were also assessed. Male genitalia are typically highly variable across species, for which sexual selection is thought to be responsible. Sexually selected traits characteristically show positive allometry and high phenotypic variation, although genitalia seem to be typified by negative allometry due to stabilizing selection. Additionally, while sexual selection appears to be the primary force responsible for genital evolution, the precise mechanism is unclear, but good-genes selection could be involved. If so, male genital variation should correlate with some male quality measure(s). We investigated the allometry of male Nyctalus noctula genitalia and investigated associations between genital size and three phenotypic measures of male quality (body size, relative body mass, and fluctuating asymmetry (FA)). We found that the penis exhibited positive allometry and high phenotypic variation, and was positively associated with male body size and relative body mass, but not with FA. This pattern is more typical of sexually selected display traits, contrasting with general patterns of genital allometry. The baculum was negatively allometric and was not associated with any quality measure. Mass-rearing biology of Fopius vandenboschi (Hym., Braconidae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract:   Basic biological information concerning the reproductive activities of Fopius ( Biosteres ) vandenboschi (Fullaway) (Hym., Braconidae, Opiinae) were determined to facilitate insectary mass production. Mean (±SE) progeny production per generation (yield) of 200 ♀♀ F. vandenboschi was 6835.8 ± 433.2 and 3755.8 ± 112.4 parasitoids, with 24-h exposure to second instar Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), respectively. Ceratitis capitata as a factitious host was more sensitive to parasitism, producing a significantly higher percentage of uneclosed host puparia frequently containing parasitoid cadavers (22.5 ± 0.8%), than B. dorsalis (3.4 ± 0.2%). The overall mean production of female offspring was ≥50%♀♀ in both host species. Unlike several other opiine parasitoids, young (5-day-old) females of F. vandenboschi produced low proportion of daughters (26–37%♀♀) and significantly shifted production to female-biased offspring (53–71%♀♀) at older age intervals (16–30 days). Based on the parasitoid yield data with a 24-h exposure period to second instar host larvae of B. dorsalis , about 150 cage replicates (of 200 ♀♀ each) may be sufficient to mass produce about 1 million parasitoids of F. vandenboschi during the reproductive period of 5–30 days, with an average of 56% female offspring. A short oviposition exposure period of 6 h was not optimal for mass production of F. vandenboschi . Total yield at 6 h exposure was one-fifth the production at 24-h exposure, using B. dorsalis hosts.  相似文献

Myrmarachne assimilis , an ant-like jumping spider (Araneae, Salticidae) from the Philippines and a Batesian mimic of Oecophylla smaragdina , the Asian weaver ant, aggregates on leaves in the company of its model. All stages in this species' lifecycle are sometimes found in nest complexes (nests connected to each other by silk). Although aggregating and forming nest complexes is known for a few other salticid species, the aggregations of M. assimilis have some unusual characteristics. In particular, reproductive females appear to be most frequently found with other reproductive females in nest complexes, suggesting that nest complexes have a role in parental care and are often built by females joining other females. An egg-survival experiment showed that eggs in solitary nests were more often destroyed than were eggs in nest complexes, suggesting that, for females of M. assimilis , choosing aggregations as oviposition sites may be functionally akin to life insurance for their progeny.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 475–481.  相似文献
