A new genus and species, Thrinascotrema brisbanica, is proposed to accommodate a plagiorchiidan trematode parasitic in the stomach of the freshwater turtle Elseya latisternum. The distinctive taxonomic features of the parasite are the shape and extent of the excretory bladder, and the stenostomate arrangement of the excretory collecting ducts in the adult, cercaria and metacercaria together with a cercarial protonephridial formula of 2(12+12+12)+(12+12+12). The life-cycle is three- host and aquatic. The pulmonate snail Glyptophysa gibbosa served as both a first and second intermediate host and tadpoles of Limnodynastes peronii, Adelotus brevis and Bufo marinus, and the snail Austropeplea lessoni also served as second intermediate hosts. Eggs were fully embryonated and infective when laid, but did not hatch until eaten by the snail. Cercariae first emerged 55 days after infection at 24-28 °C. They were sluggish swimmers and survived for about 48 hr. They attached firmly to the skin of snails and tadpoles on contact and began to penetrate the skin after a short exploratory migration. Metacercariae survived in snails and tadpoles for at least 3 months. It is concluded that Thrinascotrema is best placed within a new family, the Thrinascotrematidae (Digenea: Plagiorchiida), based on the unusual morphology of the excretory system.  相似文献

The biology and impact of Gryon clavigrallae Mineo, an egg parasitoid of Clavigralla scutellaris Spinola and C. gibbosa (Westwood), was investigated. The calculated developmental threshold temperatures for females and males were 15.6 degrees C and 15.8 degrees C, respectively. Emergence exceeded 94% at temperatures between 22 and 30 degrees C. Adult females lived on average 28-96 days when fed with honey. Without food, adults lived < 6 days. Mean fecundity was 56.4 eggs per female. A significant trend of lower fecundity after longer periods of host deprivation was observed. Gryon clavigrallae females successfully oviposited in host eggs of all ages though eggs < 4 days old were preferred. Total host handling times were significantly longer on C. gibbosa eggs (23.5 min) than on C. scutellaris eggs (12.0 min). Females readily distinguished parasitized from non-parasitized host eggs. Superparasitism was observed when few or no unparasitized eggs were available. Eggs of the two Clavigralla species can be separated by surface structure and condition after eclosion. Clavigralla scutellaris laid significantly larger egg clusters than C. gibbosa (19.9 versus 10.5 eggs per cluster). Gryon clavigrallae was present as soon as the first Clavigralla spp. egg clusters were found on pigeonpea. The percentage of egg clusters parasitized increased early in the season with egg cluster density and remained high (up to 83%) despite fluctuations in host density. Overall, G. clavigrallae parasitized 40 and 58% of C. gibbosa and C. scutellaris eggs. The percentage of egg clusters parasitized and the number of eggs parasitized per cluster increased significantly with egg cluster size. The overall parasitoid sex ratio was highly female biased but varied with the number of eggs parasitized per cluster.  相似文献

Experimental infections provide an important foundation for understanding host responses to parasites. While infections with Ribeiroia ondatrae cause mortality and malformations in a wide range of amphibian second intermediate host species, little is known about how the parasite affects its snail first intermediate hosts or even what species can support infection. In this study, we experimentally exposed Helisoma trivolvis, a commonly reported host of R. ondatrae, and Biomphalaria glabrata, a confamilial snail known to host Ribeiroia marini, to increasing concentrations of embryonated eggs of R. ondatrae obtained from surrogate definitive hosts. Over the course of 8 wk, we examined the effect of parasite exposure on infection status, time-to-cercariae release, host size, and mortality of both snail species. Helisoma trivolvis was a highly competent host for R. ondatrae infection, with over 93% infection in all exposed snails, regardless of egg exposure level. However, no infections were detected among exposed B. glabrata, despite previous accounts of this snail hosting a congener parasite. Among exposed H. trivolvis, high parasite exposure reduced growth, decreased time-to-cercariae release, and caused marginally significant increases in mortality. Interestingly, while B. glabrata snails did not become infected with R. ondatrae, individuals exposed to 650 R. ondatrae eggs grew less rapidly than unexposed snails, suggesting a sub-lethal energetic cost associated with parasite exposure. Our results highlight the importance of using experimental infections to understand the effects of parasite exposure on host- and non-host species, each of which can be affected by exposure.  相似文献

Aptorchis glandularis n. sp. is described from the intestine of the northwestern red-faced turtle, Emydura australis (Pleurodira: Chelidae), in the Kimberley, Western Australia. This digenean is morphologically most similar to Aptorchis aequalis but can be differentiated readily from the latter species by the presence of ventral glands arranged in 3 rows. This feature is unique among plagiorhioidean digeneans and resembles the glands observed in some monostome digeneans in Notocotylidae and Microscaphidiidae. Comparison of approximately 2,600 bases of ribosomal DNA (partial 18S, complete ITS1+5.8S+ITS2, partial 28S), obtained from all 5 known Aptorchis species, strongly supports the status of Aptorchis glandularis n. sp. as a new species. Phylogenetic analysis of these sequence data demonstrates 2 strongly supported clades (A. pearsoni + A. megacetabulus) and (A. aequalis + A. glandularis n. sp.), with A. megapharynx representing a separate lineage. This is the first report of an endoparasite from Emydura australis.  相似文献

Daubaylia potomaca is a parasitic nematode that exhibits a direct life cycle using planorbid snails as their only host. Within the snail host Helisoma anceps , all developmental stages of the parasite are present at any given time. The nematode has an unusual life cycle, with the adult female being the infective stage rather than the third-stage larvae (L(3)), as is commonly the case in many other parasitic nematode life cycles. In addition, length analysis showed that L(1) and L(2) were not present in tissues, suggesting that larvae hatch from eggs as the L(3). Previous studies by other investigators show that adult females abandon Biomphalaria glabrata at some point between 3 and 9 days of host death; in the present study, adult female D. potomaca leave H. anceps up to 59 days (and a mean of 14.8 days) before host death. This observation indicates a striking physiological difference between an experimental and a natural host for the parasite.  相似文献

The life cycle of Gnathostoma nipponicum was examined by field survey and by experimental infection of animals with the larvae. Naturally infected larval G. nipponicum were found in loaches, catfish, and snakes. Experimentally, loaches, killifishes, frogs, salamanders, mice, and rats were successfully infected with the early third-stage larvae of G. nipponicum obtained from copepods (the first intermediate host), whereas snakes, quails, and weasels were not. Frogs, snakes, quails, and rats were experimentally infected with the advanced third-stage larvae (AdL3) from loaches. These results reveal that some species of fishes, amphibians and mammals can act as the second intermediate host and that some species of reptiles, birds and mammals can act as a paratenic host. The life cycle was completed in weasels, the definitive host, which were infected with AdL3 from loaches and started to evacuate eggs of G. nipponicun in faeces on days 65-90 postinfection.  相似文献

A fundamental goal of parasite evolutionary ecology is to elucidate patterns of host use and determine the underlying mechanisms of parasite colonisation. In order to distinguish the relative contributions of host encounter rates and host compatibility to infection outcomes, we compared host use in both field and experimental laboratory settings. Two years of bi-weekly snail sampling at a freshwater pond demonstrated fluctuating availability among three potential second intermediate snail host species and suggested that two trematode species (Echinostoma revolutum and Echinoparyphium sp.) did not colonise the three potential snail host species, Lymnaea elodes, Physa gyrina and Helisoma trivolvis, differentially. However, a series of experimental infections demonstrated that both parasites colonised H. trivolvis more so than the other two host species. Thus, more echinostome parasites utilised snail hosts that cannot serve as their first intermediate host. In experimental infections, host size and vagility were not strong determinants of infection. By utilising field and laboratory approaches, we were able to compare the strength of host compatibility under controlled conditions with patterns of infection in nature. Based on the results from these studies, it appears that host encounter is the primary mechanism dictating infection outcomes in the field.  相似文献

Eggs of three strains of the cynipid parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma and a Tunisian strain (G317) of L. boulardi are not encapsulated by hemocytes of Drosophila melanogaster hosts, but the eggs of a Congolese strain (L104) of L. boulardi are encapsulated. To determine the reason for the difference in host response against the parasitoid eggs, lamellocytes (hemocytes that encapsulate foreign objects and form capsules around endogenous tissues in melanotic tumor mutants) were examined in host larvae parasitized by the five Leptopilina strains. Parasitization by the three L. heterotoma strains affected the morphology of host lamellocytes and suppressed endogenous melanotic capsule formation in melanotic tumor hosts. L104 did not alter the morphology of host lamellocytes nor block tumor formation in melanotic tumor mutant hosts. The morphology of some lamellocytes was affected by G317 parasitization but host lamellocytes were still capable of forming melanotic tumors and encapsulating dead supernumerary parasitoid larvae. Therefore, the eggs of strains affecting lamellocyte morphology are protected from encapsulation by the host's blood cells. L. heterotoma eggs float freely in the host hemocoel but L. boulardi eggs are attached to host tissue surfaces. Lamellocytes cannot infiltrate the attachment site so the capsule around the L104 egg remains incomplete. The wasp larva uses this gap in the capsule as an escape hatch for emergence.  相似文献

Schistosoma mansoni was isolated by hatching eggs obtained from a naturally infected Rat in Grand Etang, Guadeloupe; fifty Biomphalaria glabrata were exposed to five miracidia each. The resulting cercariae were used to infect laboratory mice which were later sacrificed to provide worms for enzyme analyses and eggs for further infections. Seven enzymes in extracts of individual worms were examined by isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gels: AcP, G6PDH, PGM, GPI and HK showed no variation, whereas MDH and LDH proved to be polymorphic. Two MDH loci were recognised, MDH-2 was invariant whereas two alleles were assumed at the MDH-1 locus. It was not possible to make a genetic interpretation of the complex banding pattern of LDH, although 4 types (LDH-A, -B, -C, -D) were observed. Of the snail infections, one batch of snails was exposed to 5 miracidia per snail in the normal way whereas other snails were each exposed to a single miracidium. The latter were sacrificed to provide sporocysts to transplant into further groups of recipient snails. Cercariae from the recipient snails were used to infect mice and the adult worms were analysed and compared with the normally passaged material. In this way, three lines, defined by the possession of particular MDH and LDH types, were selected from the originally polymorphic population; two were identical. The combination of single miracidium infections and enzyme typing has illustrated the possibility of selecting parasite lines of known genotype; transplantation of sporocysts from snail to snail has demonstrated that such lines can be maintained exclusively in the intermediate host.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

夹竹桃天蛾Daphnis nerii(Linnaeus)是夹竹桃上的重要害虫,具有间歇性爆发的特点。该虫在湖南省衡阳地区1年发生2~3代,以蛹在寄主附近的枯枝落叶层、表层松土及土壤缝穴中越冬。越冬代成虫于6月上旬出现,6月中下旬产卵。6月下旬第1代幼虫孵化;第1代成虫于7月中旬出现,7月下旬产卵。第2代幼虫8月上旬孵化,8月下旬至9月上旬幼虫危害最历害,9月中旬开始化蛹,化蛹持续到10月中旬。第2代蛹发生分化,一部分成为越冬蛹,另一部分则羽化为成虫。第2代成虫于10月上旬开始产下第3代卵。10月上旬第3代幼虫开始孵化,11月中旬第3代幼虫开始化蛹、越冬。  相似文献

The development of Fasciola hepatica from two species of definitive hosts, i.e. cattle (Bos taurus) and a marmoset (Callithrix penicillata) in the snail Lymnaea columella was determined based on the production of rediae and cercariae and snail survival rate. More rediae and cercariae at 60-74 days post-infection were produced by snails infected by cattle-derived miracidia (cattle group) than by those infected by marmoset-derived miracidia (marmoset group). Among the L. columella parasitized by the marmoset group, the survival rate and the percentage of positive snails were higher than among those parasitized by the cattle group. Eggs of F. hepatica released in cattle faeces were significantly bigger than those released in marmoset faeces. Miracidia originating from parasites that completed their development in cattle were more efficient in infecting the intermediate host. These results suggest that vertebrate-host origin influences the eggs produced by the parasite and the infection rates in the snail host L. columella.  相似文献

Adult trematodes identified as Galactosomum ussuriense Oshmarin, 1963 were recorded from the intestine of Sterna hirundo and Larus brunnicephalus from Visakhapatnam, India. Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida responded similarly to hatch stimulation by potato root leachate, but proportionally more second-stage juveniles (J2s) of G. rostochiensis hatched than of G. pallida in response to picrolonic acid, sodium thiocyanate, alpha-solanine, and alpha-chaconine. Fractionation of the potato root leachate identified hatching factors with species-selective (active toward both species but stimulating greater hatch of one species than the other), -specific (active toward only one species), and -neutral (equally active toward both species) activities. In a comparison of two populations of each of the two potato cyst nematode (PCN) species, however, greater similarity in response to the individual hatching factors was observed among populations of different species produced under the same conditions than among different populations of the same PCN species. Smaller numbers of species-specific and species-selective hatching factor stimulants and hatching inhibitors than of hatching factors were resolved. In a study to determine whether the different hatching responses of the two species to the same root leachate were associated with different ratios of species-selective and species-specific hatching factors, G. rostochiensis pathotype Ro1 exhibited greater hatch than did G. pallida pathotype Pa2/3 in response to leachate from older plants (more than 38 days old), while G. pallida exhibited greater hatch in response to leachate from younger plants (less than 38 days old); the response of G. pallida pathotype Pal with respect to plant age was intermediate between the other two populations. Combined molecular exclusion-ion exchange chromatography of the root leachates from plants of different ages revealed an increase in the proportion of G. rostochiensis-specific and -selective hatching factors as the plants aged.  相似文献

Trissolcus nigripedius Nakagawa (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is an egg parasitoid of Dolycoris baccarum L. (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), a polyphagous insect pest of many crops including soybean. As a method for mass-rearing to augment the parasitoid, cold storage of host eggs were evaluated in the laboratory. After 0 (control), 8, 20, 60, 90, and 120 days of refrigeration, host eggs were given to adult female T. nigripedius. Host acceptance behaviors of the parasitoid, categorized as drumming, oviposition, and marking, on the refrigerated eggs and biological attributes of offspring were assessed. Most of the attributes examined were affected by the refrigeration of host eggs. But host eggs could be refrigerated for up to two months without significant change in emergence rate and sex ratio and with 90% of parasitism. In addition, the second generation of the parasitoid was not negatively affected at all. However, frozen eggs of D. baccarum can not be used for rearing the parasitoid since parasitism rate decreased to 44% on host eggs frozen for 8 days. Refrigeration of D. baccarum eggs could be useful for mass-rearing and augmentation of T. nigripedius to control D. baccarum without reduction in the quality of parasitoid’s progeny. Furthermore, refrigerated eggs could be supplemented in the field to boost the population of T. nigripedius since immature D. baccarum can not hatch after 20 days of refrigeration.  相似文献

The life-cycle of Brachylaima cribbi n. sp. was established in the laboratory. Asymmetrical brachylaimid eggs, measuring 26-32 microm (29.1 microm) long and 16 -17.5 microm (16.6 microm) wide, were recovered from human faeces and fed to the helicid land snail Theba pisana as the first intermediate host. Sporocysts and cercariae were recovered from the T. pisana eight weeks after infection. The cercariae were used to infect the helicid land snails Cernuella virgata and Helix aspersa as second intermediate hosts. Metacercariae were recovered from the kidneys of these snails and used to infect mice. Adults of Brachylaima cribbi n. sp. were recovered from the small intestine of the mice. The differential features of B. cribbi n. sp. are the specificity for helicid snails as first and second intermediate hosts; characteristic ventral sucker and body cercarial chaetotaxy; and a long slender adult worm with equal size suckers in the first quarter of the worm, the ventral sucker occupying 41% of the body width, the uterus extending anterior to the ventral sucker and the vitelline follicles falling short of the posterior margin of the ventral sucker. No other known Brachylaima species exhibits all of these features. B. cribbi n. sp. is the first brachylaimid known to have infected humans and is probably of European origin, as the intermediate host snails were all introduced into Australia from Europe.  相似文献

The size and form (length, width, and length: width ratio) of eggs of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum, D. ditremum and D. latum vary considerably among individual worms within each species. The size of eggs varies with host species and a decrease in egg size with increasing intensity of infestation is indicated. The egg size of D. latum increases during the first 10-12 days of egg production. For single worm infections in golden hamsters the mean egg length and width of D. ditremum are significantly smaller than the corresponding means of D. dendriticum and D. latum, while D. latum has significantly wider eggs than D. dendriticum. As taxonomic characteristics, egg size and form may contribute to species delimitation at the population level. For identification at the individual level the best possible accuracy is about 80%. This accuracy is considerably reduced when variation in host species and intensities of infestations are introduced. Scanning electron microscope studies did not reveal any differences among eggs of the three species.  相似文献

An examination of a sample of benthic invertebrates collected from the Upper San Marcos River in southwestern Texas, USA in September 1999 revealed that the nymph of the ephemeropteran Tricorythodes curvatus served as natural intermediate host of the nematode Rhabdochona kidderi texensis (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae), an intestinal parasite mainly of the Rio Grande perch (Cichlasoma cyanoguttatum) in this locality; the prevalence of the parasite's third- and fourth-stage larvae in mayflies was 6.8% with the intensity of 1-2 larvae per nymph. Live R. kidderi texensis eggs collected from nematodes recovered from C. cyanoguttatum in Texas were transported to the Czech Republic, where they were used to experimentally infect nymphs of the palaearctic mayfly species Paraleptophlebia submarginata; the development of infective third- and fourth-stage larvae in this experimental intermediate host was completed after approximately 10 days at 19 degrees C. Infected nymphs were fed to aquarium-reared fishes, four Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum and one Oreochromis niloticus, of which only three of the former became infected. The last (fourth) moult of a male nematode was observed in C. nigrofasciatum 23 days p.i. and adult males and gravid females with not fully mature (non-embryonated) eggs in uteri on days 40 and 51 p.i. The prepatent period of R. kidderi texensis is approximately two months.  相似文献
