As a basis for understanding the mechanism of erection in an animal model frequently used in research in reproductive biology, the angioarchitecture of the penis of the rat has been described using scanning electron microscopy. Study of the penile vasculature of the rat indicates that the corpora cavernosa penis and the corpus spongiosum are independent erectile tissues, each with its own arterial and venous vessels. The large vascular spaces and abundant smooth muscle of the penile crura are compatible with its role in regulating blood flow to more distal penile tissues. Helicine arteries of the crura, but not the parent deep penile artery or arteries elsewhere, have muscular cushions in their walls. The venous drainage of the penile crura is via subtunical veins which are thought to be compressed during erection to elevate pressure within the penis. Large, paired cavernous veins drain the shaft of the penis. A unique method for inhibiting blood flow from the penis is indicated by the division of the cavernous veins into smaller channels prior to joining the subtunical venous plexus. Erectile tissue in the bifid origins of the corpus spongiosum has abundant cavernous muscle, while in the remainder of the corpus spongiosum little smooth muscle lines the cavernous spaces. The cavernous spaces on either side of the urethra coalesce to form vessels, each of which communicates with cavernous spaces in the glans. In addition, a bypass of the glans is effected by communication of these vessels directly with the deep dorsal vein. The apparent absence of muscular pads in vessels of the spongiosum, the relative paucity of cavernous smooth muscle, and the ample venous drainage provided by the deep dorsal vein may account for the lack of a venous occlusive mechanism similar to that of the corpora cavernosa penis.  相似文献

Posterior pelvic osteotomy has not been a satisfactory operation to provide penile length in the repair of defects associated with bladder exstrophy. The authors are proposing a new technique based on the movement of the halves of the symphysis and pubic rami (en bloc with the attached corpora cavernosa) to the midline. This is accomplished by osteotomies of the superior and inferior rami and bone grafting of the resulting defects in the superior rami only. The hip joints are not disturbed, risk of complications appears to be reduced, and increased effective penile length is obtained. Cadaver dissections confirmed the practicality of this operation and a successful case is reported. The anatomy and physiology of penile function that is important to surgeons is reviewed.  相似文献

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-diaphorase histochemistry, which indicates the presence of neural nitric oxide synthase, the enzyme responsible for the generation of nitric oxide, was used in combination with retrograde labelling methods to determine, in whole-mounts and sections of rat major pelvic ganglia, whether neurons destined for the penile corpora cavernosa were able to produce nitric oxide. In whole-mount preparations of pelvic ganglia, among the 607±106 retrogradely labelled neurons innervating the penile corpora cavernosa, 84±7% were NADPH-diaphorase-positive, 30±7% of which were intensely histochemically stained. In serial sections of pelvic ganglia, out of a mean count of 451 retrogradely labelled neurons, 65% stained positively for NADPH-diaphorase. An average of 1879±363 NADPH-diaphorase positive cell bodies was counted in the pelvic ganglion. In the major pelvic ganglion, neurons both fluorescent for Fluorogold or Fast Blue and intensely stained for NADPH-diaphorase were consistently observed in the dorso-caudal part of the ganglia in the area close to the exit of the cavernous nerve and within this nerve. This co-existence was much less constant in other parts of the ganglion. In the rat penis, many NADPH-diaphorase-positive fibres and varicose terminals were observed surrounding the penile arteries and running within the wall of the cavernous spaces. This distribution of NADPH-diaphorase-positive nerve cells and terminals is consistent with the idea that the relaxation of the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa and the dilation of the penile arterial bed mediated by postganglionic parasympathetic neurons is attributable to the release of nitric oxide and that nitric oxide plays a crucial role in penile erection. Moreover, the existence in the pelvic ganglion of a large number of NADPH-diaphorase-positive neurons that are not destined for the corpora cavernosa suggests that nitric oxide is probably also involved in the function of other pelvic tissues.  相似文献

With the purpose to characterize the ultrasonographic features of the dog penis, 20 healthy dogs aged from 2 to 11 years old were used. Ultrasonography was performed using a 5-9MHz linear probe and a Philips HD3 scanner. Ultrasonograms were obtained at the penile body (pre- and post-scrotal sections) and at both the bulbus glandis and the pars longa glandis, with the dog placed in dorsal recumbency. The typical anatomy of the dog penis is easily demonstrated in ultrasonographic images, as revealed in this study. On ultrasonograms taken at the body level, the two corpora cavernosa showed a homogeneous, hypoechoic structure; ventrally, the corpus spongiosum appears as a slightly hyperechoic structure surrounding the urethra. In glans ultrasonograms, the most typical feature is the os penis, observed as a strong hyperechoic structure, whose acoustic shadow impairs the screening of adjacent tissues. Lining on its concavity, the corpus spongiosum is observed as a slightly hyperechoic tissue around the urethra. An ovoid, regularly hypoechoic tissue corresponding to the erectile tissue of the pars longa, surrounds these structures. The bulbus glandis is visualized as a regular hypoechoic structure with small anechoic areas, corresponding to sinusoidal spaces. The albuginea is evidenced as a well-defined, hyperechoic external layer. The preputial cavity appears as a thin anechoic layer surrounding the albuginea. The results of this study demonstrate that ultrasonographic assessment of the dog penis is easily performed and accurate enough for penile examination. Furthermore, ultrasonography of the dog penis can become an interesting diagnostic tool to explore in the canine practice, during breeding soundness evaluation and also whenever penile exposition is impossible to achieve.  相似文献

Study of neuropeptide Y-containing nerve fibers in the human penis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Neuropeptide Y 1–36 (IR-NPY) immunoreactive nerve-fiber processes have been observed in tunicae of veins and arteries and in smooth muscles of the human penis taken at autopsy or during surgery by use of light-and electron-microscopic immunohistochemical techniques. Numerous IR-NPY nerve fibers were mostly concentrated in the inner part of the adventitia close to the media of the arterial and venous vessels and among the intracavernous smooth muscle cells. IR-NPY nerve fibers were less abundant in veins than in arteries. Positive somata were not observed in the penises. At the ultrastructural level, IR-NPY were localized exclusively in large, dense granules of nerve terminals by means of the postembedding immunogold technique. In the deep dorsal vein, IR-NPY nerve fibers were also located in the media formed by an outer circular and an inner longitudinal layer. In the intracavernous and dorsal arteries, they showed the highest density in the inner part of the adventitia. In the corpora cavernosa and in the corpus spongiosum, IR-NPY nerve processes were intermingled between the smooth-muscle fibers around the sinusoid spaces. IR-NPY nerve fibers were present in the cavernous nerves close to the central arteries. The urethra did not show any IR-NPY-positive nerve fibers. This peculiar distribution of IR-NPY nerve fibers suggested that they could participate in regulating arterial and venous blood flow and intracavernous smooth-muscle tone. NPY may therefore be of importance in some of the mechanisms of penile erection especially during detumescence.  相似文献

The penises of bats are taxonomically distinctive in size and shape. In addition, they are variable in microscopic anatomy, indicating that histomorphological studies of copulatory organs of bats may help understanding their successful reproductive strategies. We studied adult males of 13 species of vespertilionid and phyllostomid bats. Both families exhibited the basic structure of the vascular penis of mammals: the hydrostatic elements of the corpora cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum surrounding the urethra, as well as accessory cavernous tissue. Variation in the position and amount of the tissues were observed in these families. Vespertilionid bats have a small glans penis with abundant accessory cavernous tissue on the prepuce and a highly variable baculum. The baculum varied in size and morphology, even among congeneric species, such as the three Lasiurus species and the two Myotis species. Phyllostomid species possess no bacula, but vascular structures are present to produce penile stiffening, particularly on the glans. Variation in the microscopic anatomy of the phyllostomid prepuce was observed, for example, Artibeus species had accessory cavernous tissue surrounded by a tunica albuginea, but Carollia perspicillata had two bundles of striated musculature and some adipose tissue; abundant pigments were present in the prepuce of most species.  相似文献

NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-D) activity and immunoreactivity for neural and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (nNOS and eNOS, respectively) were used to investigate nitric oxide (NO) regulation of penile vasculature. Both the histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques for NOS showed that all smooth muscles regions of the penis (dorsal penile artery and vein, deep penile vessels, and cavernosal muscles) were richly innervated. The endothelium of penile arteries, deep dorsal penile vein, and select veins in the crura and shaft were also stained for NADPH-D and eNOS. However, the endothelium of cavernous sinuses was unstained by both techniques. Fewer fibers were seen in the glans penis, those present being associated with small blood vessels and large nerve bundles near the trabecular walls. All penile neurons in the pelvic plexus, located by retrograde transport of a dye placed in the corpora cavernosa penis, were stained by the NADPH-D method. Essentially similar results were obtained with an antibody to nNOS. These data suggest that penile parasympathetic neurons comprise a uniform population, as all seem capable of forming nitric oxide. However, in contrast to the endothelium of penile vessels, the endothelium lining the cavernosal spaces may not be capable of nitric oxide synthesis.  相似文献

Bicycle seat pressure is often examined by researchers exploring solutions for reducing seat injuries as it is thought a critical determinant; however, a reliable and valid methodology for this undertaking has not been reported. The current study was designed to address this shortcoming and to establish baseline interface pressure measurements for females and males. Participants completed two separate identical bicycle ergometer trials at 118 W in the tops and drops and at 300+/-82.4 W in top handlebar positions. Seat pressures were quantified from a pressure-sensing mat and the validity of the pressure system was examined through the relationship between known seat weights and the sum of seat pressures. Within trial intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranged between 0.90 and 0.99 and the between trial ICC values ranged between 0.02 and 0.96. The relationship (Pearson correlation coefficient) between seat weight and the sum of pressures was 0.97. Significant peak pressures were 39% greater in the 118 W top than 300 W top handlebar condition and 29% greater than the 118 W drop handlebar condition (p < 0.05). The gender comparison revealed that significant male peak pressure values were greater (24%) and that female values were less influenced by the hand position factor. Select within trial pressure measurements were found to be reliable during pedaling and valid statically. Additionally, the results indicated that workrate and hand position were factors influencing seat pressure and that males and females responded differently to adjustments of these factors.  相似文献

A beneficial effect of dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNIC) with thiol-containing ligands on penile cavernus tissue was shown in rats subjected to penile denervation. Histological and histochemical investigations demonstrated that intracavernous injections of dinitrosyl iron complexes (2 times per one week during 6 months) blocked the reinforcement of endothelial cell proliferation in the tissue characteristic of the cavernous tissue when the penile nerve was removed. On the other hand, treatment with dinitrosyl iron complexes led to the preservation of mitotic activity of smooth myocytes and protected against the appearance in these cells of collagenase, an indicator of muscle transformation into fibrous tissue. It was shown that the process of fibrous transformation of myocytes correlates with a decrease in the mitotic activity of fibroblasts in the adventive part of cavernosa. The mitotic activity increased in cavernous tissue in the absence of dinitrosyl iron complexes. The efficiency of long-term action of dinitrosyl iron complexes on the erection in both intact animals and animals subjected to neuroectomy of cavernous tissue nerve was shown. The injection of low-molecular dinitrosyl iron complexes to the cavernous tissue resulted in the formation of protein-bound dinitrosyl iron complexes in the tissue, which were detected by the EPR technique. It is assumed that these dinitrosyl iron complexes function as a depot of nitric oxide, providing long-lasting penis erection.  相似文献

Automotive side impacts are a leading cause of injuries to the pubic symphysis, yet the mechanisms of those injuries have not been clearly established. Previous mechanical testing of isolated symphyses revealed increased joint laxity following drop tower lateral impacts to isolated pelvic bone structures, which suggested that the joints were damaged by excessive stresses and/or deformations during the impact tests. In the present study, a finite element (FE) model of a female pelvis including a previously validated symphysis sub-model was developed from computed tomography data. The full pelvis model was validated against measured force-time impact responses from drop tower experiments and then used to study the biomechanical response of the symphysis during the experimental impacts. The FE models predicted that the joint underwent a combination of lateral compression, posterior bending, anterior/posterior and superior/inferior shear that exceeded normal physiological levels prior to the onset of bony fractures. Large strains occurred concurrently within the pubic ligaments. Removal of the contralateral constraints to better approximate the boundary conditions of a seated motor vehicle occupant reduced cortical stresses and deformations of the pubic symphysis; however, ligament strains, compressive and shear stresses in the interpubic disc, as well as posterior bending of the joint structure remained as potential sources of joint damage during automotive side impacts.  相似文献

Summary The present study investigated the distribution of neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive fibers to the penis of the rat. In the corpora cavernosa penis, a dense plexus of fibers was asociated with arteries, intrinsic cavernosal muscle, and veins including the deep dorsal vein. In the corpus spongiosum, immunoreactive fibers were present around vascular smooth muscle and at the periphery of the acini of the paraurethral glands. Immunohistochemistry of penile neurons identified by retrograde tracer injection into the penis indicates that about 5% of the penile neurons in the pelvic plexus contained the neuropeptide while larger percentages of penile neurons in the sympathetic chains were immunoreactive for neuropeptide Y. Chemical and surgical sympathectomy greatly reduced the neuropeptide Y- and catecholamine-containing fibers in the erectile tissue but had no clear effect on the neuropeptide Y fibers around the paraurethral glands; a tissue that is not innervated by adrenergic fibers. It is concluded that (1) the widespread distribution of neuropeptide Y indicates that it may function in the control of penile blood flow, (2) with the possible exception of the paraurethral glands, the sympathetic chain is the most likely source of neuropeptide Y fibers in both erectile bodies of the penis, and (3) this peptide may play a role in the secretory functions of the paraurethral glands.  相似文献

The human pelvis is susceptible to severe injury in vehicle side impacts owing to its close proximity to the intruding door and unnatural loading through the greater trochanter. Whereas fractures of the pelvic bones are diagnosed with routine radiographs (x-rays) and computerized tomography (CT scans), non-displaced damage to the soft tissues of pubic symphysis joints may go undetected. If present, trauma-induced joint laxity may cause pelvic instability, which has been associated with pelvic pain in non-traumatic cases. In this study, mechanical properties of cadaveric pubic symphysis joints from twelve normal and eight laterally impacted pelves were compared. Axial stiffness and creep responses of these isolated symphyses were measured in tension and compression (perpendicular to the joint). Bending stiffness was determined in four primary directions followed by a tension-to-failure test. Loading rate and direction correlated significantly (p<0.05) with stiffness and tensile strength of the unimpacted joints, more so than donor age or gender. The impacted joints had significantly lower stiffness in tension (p <0.04), compression (p<0.003), and posterior bending (p<0.03), and more creep under a compressive step load (p<0.008) than the unimpacted specimens. Tensile strength was reduced following impact, however, not significantly. We concluded that the symphysis joints from the impacted pelves had greater laxity, which may correlate with post-traumatic pelvic pain in some motor vehicle crash occupants.  相似文献

Concentrations of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide were measured in blood drawn from the cavernous spaces of corpus cavernosum of the human penis during tumescence and erection, and the effect of injecting the polypeptide into the cavernous spaces was studied. A significant release of the polypeptide was shown during tumescence and erection. Injection of exogenous vasoactive intestinal polypeptide induced erection. These findings support the concept of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide as a neurotransmitter in penile erection and suggest that it might have a clinical use in patients suffering from erectile dysfunction.  相似文献

It has been observed that parturition has a significant effect on female skeletal architecture and that age alters musculoskeletal tissues and their functions. We therefore hypothesized that multiparity affects the recovery of the pubic symphysis in senescent mice at postpartum and the morphology of the interpubic tissues. The pubic symphysis of primiparous young, virgin senescent (VS) and multiparous senescent (MS) Swiss mice was examined by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, morphometric analysis and immunohistochemistry. The mouse pubic symphysis was remodeled during the first pregnancy: the cellular phenotype and morphology changed to ensure a structurally safe birth canal, followed by recovery of the interpubic articulation after birth. The morphology of the pubic symphysis in the VS group was maintained in a state similar to that observed in virgin young mice. In contrast, MS mice exhibited an interpubic ligament characterized by extended fibrocyte-like cells, an opened interpubic articulation gap, compacted and thin collagen fibrils and scarce galectin-3-positive cells. Thus, we found that the cellular and extracellular characteristics of the pubic symphysis were altered by multiparity in senescent mice. These particular tissue characteristics of the MS group might be associated with an impaired recovery process at postpartum. Thus, a better understanding of the alterations that occur in the birth canal, including the pubic symphysis, due to multiparity in reproductively aged mice may contribute to our comprehension of the biological mechanisms that modify the skeleton and pelvic ligaments and even play a role in the murine model of pelvic organ prolapse.  相似文献

Extensive cavernous body fibrosis is responsible for organic impotence when the lesions have advanced. Those fibrotic lesions can be caused by penile trauma, severe peyronie's disease, priapism (mostly post ICI) and rejection of a previously implanted prosthese. Sexual activity can be restored, mainly the erections, and is posiible with the insertion of penile prosthese. As a result of important anatomical changes, due to irregular indurations and retractions of the corpora, this surgery can be very difficult. The use of a double incisional approach (sub-coronal and perineal, degloving the penis out of its shaft through the perineal incision), allows, inspite of a potentially increased risk of infection, a total exposure making implantation and reconstruction much easier. The study of this limited series (from 1990 to 1996, 19 patients were operated with this procedure), allows to draw some preliminary conlusions about the pathology, the technique, the operatory (pre-, per-, and post-) precautions of this surgical procedure that treats serious erectile tissue fibrosis. Results are satisfactorily concerning recovery of penile rigidity as well as sexual activity.  相似文献

Traditional methods of penile cavernosography failed to reveal a vascular defect or shunt from the corpus cavernosum penis of a 6-yr-old Brahman bull with a history of acquired failure of penile erection. When a tourniquet was applied to the penis and the contrast medium was introduced into the corpus cavernosum penis under pressure, however, a communication between the corpus cavernosum penis and corpus spongiosum penis was demonstrated. In a normal bull, cavernosography with the introduction of contrast medium under pressure produced a normal radiographic appearance. It is suggested that modification of accepted techniques of cavernosography to incorporate injection of contrast medium under pressure is useful in diagnosing this particular type of vascular abnormality, and may also aid in the detection of smaller vascular shunts from the corpus cavernosum penis to the superficial penile vasculature.  相似文献

Peyronie's disease is a pathological condition of the penis which is characterized by localized ossification of the tunica albuginea. A common symptom of the chronic stage is penile deformity during erection, which is frequently associated with pain and erectile dysfunction. A two-dimensional biomechanical model of the penis was applied to study the development of Peyronie’s disease by simulating the mechanical stress distribution which would result from the interaction of the ossified tunical tissue with other penile soft tissues. The model was solved by using commercial finite element software for a characteristic erectile pressure. The results demonstrate that Peyronie’s plaques may induce intensified stresses around the penile nerves and blood vessels, up to double those in the normal penis. These elevated stresses may cause a painful sensation of neural origin or ischemia in regions of compressed vascular tissue. Severe penile deformities have been shown to develop if Peyronie’s plaques develop only around one of the corpora cavernosa due to the non-homogeneous resistance of the tunica to expansion during erection. The present model can be clinically applied as an aid in the planning process of reconstructive surgery or insertion of a prosthesis.  相似文献

The cholinergic neurons in the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT) play a crucial role in the regulation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Because penile erection occurs during REM sleep, the involvement of the LDT in penile erection was examined in unanesthetized head-restrained rats. To detect penile erection, corpus spongiosum of the penis (CSP) pressure was measured through a telemetric device with simultaneous bulbospongiosum (BS) muscle EMG recording through stainless wires. Electrical stimulation in and around the LDT induced the following three CSP pressure patterns: 1) a full erection pattern indistinguishable from the nonevoked or spontaneous erection, characterized by a slow increase in CSP pressure with additional sharp CSP peaks associated with BS muscle bursts, 2) a muscular pattern characterized by sharp CSP pressure peaks but in the absence of a vascular component, i.e., without an increase in baseline CSP pressure, and 3) a mixed-type response characterized by high-frequency CSP pressure peaks followed by a full erection response. Full erections were evoked in and around the LDT, including more medially and ventrally. The sites for inducing mixed-type events were intermingled with the sites that triggered full erections in the anterior half of the LDT, whereas they were separated in the posterior half. The sites for muscular responses were lateral to the sites for full erections. Finally, a CSP pressure response identical to micturition was evoked in and around the Barrington's nucleus and in the dorsal raphe nucleus. These results suggest that the LDT and surrounding region are involved in the regulation of penile erection. Moreover, different anatomical areas in the mesopontine tegmentum may have specific roles in the regulation of penile erection and micturition.  相似文献

Pits, cavities and depressions located on the dorsal surface of the pubic symphysis of females have been attributed to the trauma of parturition. Earlier research based on human skeletal remains provides inadequate information on the individual's obstetrical history. The 68 female pubic bones that were studied had comprehensive medical records indicating whether or not each female had given birth. Fourteen and one-half percent of the females who had not given birth exhibited trace to small scarring of the pubic symphysis and 23.4% of the females who had not given birth exhibited medium to large scarring. It is suggested that bony changes previously used as an indicator of child bearing must be re-examined in light of the fact that “birth scarring” has been found in women known not to have had children.  相似文献
