A morphological account on the endosymbiosis between Amphiscolops sp and Amphidinium sp is given, based on scanning and transmission electron microscopy observations. The algal symbionts (15–20 µm in diameter) are found among cells of the peripheral parenchyma. Amphidinium sp. has a single pyrenoid of the multiple-stalked type, with several chloroplast lobes radiating from it. A comparison with A. klebsii is made. Our observations reinforce the assumption of selectivity of Amphiscolops for the symbiotic genus Amphidinium.  相似文献

Cultures of Agaricus bisporus, the most extensively cultivated mushroom, can be infected severely by Pseudomonas tolaasii. This pathogen is characterized by the so-called white line reaction, a precipitate formed on agar plates between its colonies and those of P. reactans, both belonging to the collective species P. fluorescens. A recent study has shown that a group of P. tolaasii isolates can be subdivided into two groups or 'siderovars', based on the pyoverdines they produce (Munsch et al. 2000). One group of strains is characterized by the pyoverdine described by Demange et al. (1990). A representative of the second group (strain Ps3a) was found to produce the same pyoverdine as a strain which had been classified before as P. aureofaciens. However, based mainly on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons and REP-PCR generated fingerprints, the two strains are not identical. They are also distinguishable from the P. tolaasii type strain.  相似文献

Summary Toluene degrading (xyl) genes on a Pseudomonas TOL plasmid pWWO are located within a 39-kb DNA portion. The 56-kb region including these xyl genes and its 17-kb derivative with a deletion of the internal 39-kb portion transposed to various sites on target replicons such as pACYC184 and R388 in escherichia coli recA strains. Thus the 56- and 17-kb regions were designated Tn4651 and Tn4652, respectively. Genetic analysis of Tn4652 demonstrated that its transposition occurs by a two-step process, namely, cointegrate formation and its subsequent resolution. The presence in cis of DNA sequences of no more than 150 bp at both ends of Tn4652 was prerequisite for cointegrate formation, and this step was mediated by a trans-acting factor, transposase, which was encoded in a 3.0-kb segment at one end of the transposon. Cointegrate resolution took place site-specifically within a 200-bp fragment, which was situated 10 kb away from the transposase gene. Based on the stability of cointegrates formed by various mini-Tn4652 derivatives, it was shown that the cointergrate resolution requires two trans-acting factors encoded within 1.0- and 1.2-kb fragments that encompass the recombination site involved in the resolution.  相似文献

The evolution of arthropod segmentation has been studied by comparing expression patterns of pair-rule and segment polarity genes in various species. In Drosophila, the formation and maintenance of the parasegmental boundaries depend on the interactions between the wingless (wg), engrailed (en) and hedgehog (hh) genes. Until now, the expression pattern of hh has not been analysed to such a great extent as en or wg. We report the cloning and expression analysis of hh genes from Euscorpius flavicaudis, a chelicerate, and Artemia franciscana, a branchiopod crustacean. Our data provide evidence that hh, being expressed in the posterior part of every segment, is a segment polarity gene in both organisms. Additional hh expression sites were observed in the rostrum and appendages of Euscorpius and in the gut of Artemia. From the available data on hh expression in various bilaterians, we review the various hypotheses on the evolution of hh function and we suggest an ancestral role of hh in proctodeum specification and gut formation.Edited by D. Plants can adapt to grazing environments by developing defensive traits, such as spines and toxins, or having a small phenotype, such as short and prostrate growth forms. This study examined facilitative and competitive interactions between species with different types of grazing adaptation. We predicted that large species with defensive traits sometimes protect grazing-adapted species without defensive traits from herbivores, but competitively suppress them overall. We conducted an experiment using fences and removals of an unpalatable plant in the long-term deer grazing habitat of Nara Park in Nara, Japan. We evaluated the seasonal variations in the facilitative and competitive effects of a defensive perennial, Urtica thunbergiana, on the growth, survival, reproduction, and final fitness of a small palatable annual species, Persicaria longiseta, during a growing season. The populations of the two species in the park have adapted to the grazed habitat by increasing the density of stinging hairs (Urtica) and developing inherently short shoots and small leaves (Persicaria). We found that Urtica individuals had facilitative effects on the growth of Persicaria individuals under grazing during a few periods of the growing season, but had neutral effects on survival and plant fitness throughout the season. In the fenced plots, Urtica had negative effects on the growth, survival, and reproduction of Persicaria. These results suggest that the relative importance of the facilitative and competitive effects of Urtica on Persicaria fluctuated due to seasonal variations in grazing pressure and vegetative productivity. Although well-defended plants often facilitate less-defended species, we conclude that the facilitative effects of Urtica on Persicaria are limited in a plant community with a long history of intensive grazing.  相似文献

An increasing diversity of highly specialized pollination systems are being discovered, many of which are likely to be vulnerable to anthropogenic landscape modification. Here, we investigate if a specialized pollination system limits the persistence of Caladenia huegelii (Orchidaceae), an endangered species pollinated by sexual deception of thynnine wasps. Once locally common in part of its geographical range, C. huegelii is now largely restricted to small habitat remnants in urban areas. Pollinator surveys coupled with DNA barcoding detected a single pollinator taxon, a small form of Macrothynnus insignis. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that small M. insignis from within the range of C. huegelii are strongly divergent from other wasp populations, suggesting that some reproductive isolation may exist. Although common in intact landscapes outside the range of C. huegelli, small M. insignis individuals were recorded at only 4% of sites in suitable C. huegelii habitat. Accordingly, reproductive success in C. huegelii was low compared with related Caladenia spp., with 33–60% of populations failing to set fruit in any given year. As such, populations are likely to now persist primarily through individual plant longevity rather than reproduction. Due to the low reproductive success of C. huegelii, ongoing human intervention will almost certainly be needed to sustain the species. Future research will need to focus on optimizing hand pollination to maintain reproduction and high seed fitness. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 179 , 511–525.  相似文献

The evolution of complex organisms such as animals requires a large expansion of the number of genes controlling developmental events. In addition, it is thought that domains are shuffled between genes to further increase the complexity and generate new types of genes and functions. Working with the Caenorhabditis elegans homeobox gene ceh-43, the orthologue of fly Distal-less (Dll), we observed sequence similarity to the C. elegans gene fkh-1. Now, with the complete genomic sequence available, we examined this similarity in detail. The region of similarity is confined essentially to one exon in the carboxy terminus of the two genes. Based on the gene structure, we think that an exon of fkh-1 was duplicated to the carboxy terminus of ceh-43, where it was incorporated as the last exon. This duplication event seems to have happened recently since the similarity on the nucleotide level is higher than the sequence similarity between fkh-1 of C. elegans and C. briggsae. Potentially the duplication event was mediated via a short region of sequence similarity between the two open reading frames of the genes. This duplication event clear shows that a part of a gene can successfully be juxtaposed to another gene. These events may perhaps not be rare. Consider the two linear regression models of Yij on Xij, namely Yij = βio + βil Xij + εij,j = 1,2,…,ni, i = 1,2, where εij are assumed to be normally distributed with zero mean and common unknown variance σ2. The estimated value of a mean of Y1 for a given value of X1 is made to depend on a preliminary test of significance of the hypothesis β11 = β21. The bias and the mean square error of the estimator for the conditional mean of Y1 are given. The relative efficiency of the estimator to the usual estimator is computed and is used to determine a proper choice of the significance level of the preliminary test.  相似文献

The situation is considered where the multivariate distribution of certain variables X1, X2, …, Xp is changing with time in a population because natural selection related to the X's is taking place. It is assumed that random samples taken from the population at times t1, t2, …, ts are available and it is desirable to estimate the fitness function wt(x1, x2,…,xp) which shows how the number of individuals with Xi = xi, i = 1, 2, …, p at time t is related to the number of individuals with the same X values at time zero. Tests for population changes are discussed and indices of the selection on the population dispersion and the population mean are proposed. The situation with a multivariate normal distribution is considered as a special case. A maximum likelihood method that can be applied with any form of population distribution is proposed for estimating wt. The methods discussed in the paper are illustrated with data on four dimensions of male Egyptian skulls covering a time span from about 4500 B.C. to about 300 A.D. In this case there seems to have been very little selection on the population dispersion but considerable selection on means.  相似文献

Interactions between species pairs are almost always mediated by interactions with other species. The outcomes of these multispecies interactions are often difficult to predict and are rarely studied. In addition to their theoretical importance, multispecies interactions are also important for management situations. Where multiple agents are used to control invasive species, interactions between agents may either enhance or reduce the impacts on the target species, or may simply have additive effects. In this study, conducted in a Mediterranean‐type woodland in Australia, we examined how the interaction between an invasive legume, Cytisus scoparius (Leguminosae), its pollinator, Apis mellifera and a seed predator, Bruchidius villosus (Bruchidae), are modified by a native hemiparasitic vine, Cassytha pubescens (Loranthaceae). The parasite had a direct negative effect on C. scoparius, reducing flowering by 50% and consequently fruit and seed production. Despite having fewer flowers, infected plants had the same proportion of ‘tripped’ flowers, an indirect measure of pollinator visitation, as uninfected plants; although fruit formed on infected plants it was more likely to abort prematurely. Seed predation by B. villosus was lower on parasite‐infected C. scoparius plants than in uninfected plants. Although Ca. pubescens had an antagonistic effect on B. villosus, in consort, the two agents reduced overall seed production by an average of 62%. The acquired parasite Ca. pubescens was more effective in reducing reproductive output than the introduced seed predator, B. villosus, and shows potential as a biocontrol agent for C. scoparius. We documented a subadditive effect of two biological enemies on the invasive species, where the acquired parasite had a stronger effect than the introduced seed predator.  相似文献

A. vaginal isolate of Neisseria has been reported to resemble Neisseria meningitidis in biochemical characteristics but to react with serological reagents that are specific to the PI porin from Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We have confirmed that this isolate has the biochemical attributes of a meningococcus and have shown that it clusters among meningococcal Isolates on a dendrogram based on isoenzyme variation within housekeeping enzymes from populations of N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae. Furthermore, the sequences of the fbp and adk genes were typical of those of N. meningitidis and were distinct from those of N. gonorrhoeae. However, the porB gene was very similar to the por genes of N. gonorrhoeae isolates that express the PIB class of outer-membrane porin (differing from one gonococcal por allele at only a single nucleotide site), and was clearly distinct from the porB genes of N. meningitidis. The isolate therefore appears to be a typical meningococcus, except that its porB gene has been replaced with the por gene from a gonococcus.  相似文献

A DNA fragment (ADG2, 310 bp) 77% homologous to the gene N (resistance to tobacco mosaic virus in Nicotiana glutinosa) and 53% homologous to RPP5 (resistance to Peronospora parasitica in Arabidopsis thaliana) was amplified by PCR from the diploid potato genotype 2x(v-2)7 that carries the gene Ry adg located on chromosome XI and conferring extreme resistance to potato virus Y(PVY). Sequence comparison revealed that ADG2 spans a region corresponding to the predicted kinase-2 and kinase-3a motifs in N and RPP5. One of the 12 nucleotide differences detected between ADG2 and a homologous fragment from a PVY-susceptible potato genotype was located within the predicted kinase-3a motif. This single nucleotide substitution of G→C, resulting in an amino-acid substitution Ser→Thr, abolished the BbvI recognition site of ADG2, which was shown to distinguish all tested potato genotypes carrying Ry adg from those lacking this gene, irrespective of the genetic background and ploidy level. This PCR-based resistance marker, developed using a resistance gene analogue as a target, is the first example of a PCR-based marker that is generally applicable for selection of an economically important trait in potato. When adult females of the herbivorous mite, Tetranychus urticae, were exposed to the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, they laid fewer eggs than females that had not been exposed to P. persimilis when transferred onto a new leaf patch. However, when T. urticae females were exposed to either products of P. persimilis or artificially damaged conspecific eggs on a leaf patch, the number of T. urticae eggs on a new leaf patch did not differ significantly from the control. The reduced oviposition was neither due to the feeding activity on the leaf patch with P. persimilis nor to that on the new leaf patch. There was also no significant difference between the number of T. urticae eggs produced on a new leaf patch following exposure to the odours of a neighbouring leaf patch where there had previously been either P. persimilis or T. urticae adults. However, female T. urticae that had been exposed to odours from neighbouring leaf patches on which both T. urticae and P. persimilis had been placed produced significantly fewer eggs on a new leaf patch than those that had not been exposed to such odours. Neither odours from neighbouring intact leaf patches on which T. urticae eggs were preyed on by P. persimilis, nor odours from a neighbouring Parafilm patch on which T. urticae was preyed on by P. persimilis affected the oviposition of T. urticae. These data suggest that the presence of T. urticae, P. persimilis and a leaf patch are needed for the emission of odours to reduce oviposition in T. urticae.  相似文献

The African fig fly, Zaprionus indianus Gupta, is rapidly spreading through the New World and is a new potential pest for numerous fruit crops. Methods are needed to detect and monitor Z. indianus. A recent study shows that Z. indianus can be attracted with a mixture of wine and vinegar, but there are no chemical attractants yet identified. This fly was captured incidentally as a non‐target insect in experiments to develop chemical lures, based on wine and vinegar fermentation volatiles, for Drosophila suzukii Matsumura and Drosophila melanogaster Meigen. We then generated testable hypotheses on what combination of these volatiles was involved in Z. indianus attraction to wine and vinegar. We determined through a series of trapping experiments that the blend of ethanol, acetic acid, acetoin, isoamyl acetate, methionol and ethyl hexanoate constitutes a strong attractant for Z. indianus and accounts for its attraction to the combination of wine and vinegar. These results and findings provide the first opportunity to develop a long‐lasting and consistent chemical lure for trapping of Z. indianus. Such a lure in a suitable trap should provide a good means to document the spread of the fly and determine its seasonality and abundance in new areas and crops.  相似文献

  • 1 Cross‐effects between a herbivorous insect and a phytopathogenic fungus on their common host plant were examined. Specifically, we addressed the questions whether (i) infection of Chinese cabbage leaves by the fungus Alternaria brassicae affects the development and host selection behaviour of the leaf beetle Phaedon cochleariae and (ii) whether herbivory influences host suitability of Chinese cabbage for A. brassicae.
  • 2 Feeding on fungus‐infected leaves prolonged larval development and reduced pupal weight of P. cochleariae. Adult beetles avoided feeding and egg deposition on fungus‐infected leaves. In contrast to these local effects, no systemic effect of phytopathogenic infection on the herbivore was detected.
  • 3 Herbivory did not influence fungal growth neither locally nor systemically.
  • 4 Thus, our results demonstrate an asymmetric relationship between herbivore and fungus. Whereas herbivory had no visible impact on fungal growth, fungal infection of the plant induced local resistance against P. cochleariae.

A primary cDNA library with a size of 1.34 × 106 PFU was constructed from Haemaphysalis qinghaiensis eggs and was immunoscreened with rabbit anti-H. qinghaiensis serum. One clone (Hq22, named following those clones obtained from adult Haemaphysalis qinghaiensis cDNA library which we constructed before) screened from the cDNA library was selected randomly for sequencing. The entire sequence of the clone was subsequently obtained using rapid amplification of the cDNA ends (RACE). A search of the cloned sequence against GenBank revealed that it related to ribosomal protein L23a (Rpl23a) and had a high percentage similarity to this protein from different species. Conserved domains for Rpl23a were also identified in the cloned sequence. Expression analysis by RT-PCR showed that this gene is expressed in salivary glands, midguts, other tissues and different developmental stages of H. qinghaiensis. Based on the H. qinghaiensis Rpl23a sequence, open reading frames (ORF) of Rpl23a of Heamaphysalis longicornis and Boophilus microplus were also cloned and were performed for comparison with Rpl23a of H. qinghaiensis and other organisms as well. Vaccine based on Rpl23a recombinant protein cannot protect sheep against H. qinghaiensis.  相似文献

Mutualisms between invasive ants and honeydew-producing Hemiptera have the potential to result in unusually high population levels of both partners, with subsequent major changes to ecosystem composition and dynamics. We assessed the relationship between the invasive ant, Pheidole megacephala, and its hemipteran mutualists, Dysmicoccus sp. and Pulvinaria urbicola, on Cousine Island, Seychelles. We also assessed the impacts of the mutualism on the condition of the hemipteran host plant, Pisonia grandis, a native and functionally important tree species. There was a strong positive relationship between Ph. megacephala activity and hemipteran abundance, and the exclusion of ants from Pi. grandis resulted in a significant decline in Pu. urbicola abundance. High abundance of the mutualists was strongly associated with damage to the Pi. grandis forest. This indicates that the mutualism is contributing to the massive increase in the population levels of the mutualist species, and is intensifying their impacts on the island. The widespread trophobiosis and its associated high densities of mutualists pose serious threats to the ecosystem, highlighting the need to control the ant and associated hemipteran populations.  相似文献

Theory predicts that in more stressful environments, positive plant-plant interactions should be more important than negative ones. For instance, in arid and semiarid regions, amelioration of soil drought produced by the shade of established plants could facilitate establishment of other species, in spite of light reduction. However, this theory has not been tested widely in the context of plant invasion. In this paper we evaluated the hypothesis that in a semiarid ecosystem of central Chile, the native tree, Lithrea caustica, should facilitate through positive shading effects, the seedling establishment of two widely planted and invasive forestry species, Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus globulus. We assessed the seedling establishment examining two processes: seedling recruitment (including germination) and subsequent seedling survival. We sowed seeds (to assess recruitment) and planted 8 months old seedlings (to assess seedling survival) of each exotic species under Lithrea patches, open sites and under an artificial shade mimicking Lithrea shading. The study was repeated in a north-facing and a south-facing slope in the study area located in a xeric zone within the distribution range of plantations of these species in central Chile. Our results show that in a north-facing slope Lithrea had positive effects on recruitment of both species, which was produced by shading. These effects were counteracted by negative effects on seedling survival but through a different mechanism, which suggests that Lithrea would have no significant effect on the whole seedling establishment process of Pinus radiata nor Eucalyptus globulus in this habitat. In turn, in a south-facing slope Lithrea had no significant effect on recruitment but had a negative effect on seedling survival, which was not produced by shading. This suggests that in this habitat Lithrea has a negative effect on the seedling establishment of these exotic species. Our results suggest that the effect of the native Lithrea caustica on the seedling establishment of these exotic species is dependent upon the life-cycle phase (recruitment or seedling survival) and habitat even within the same semiarid ecosystem. In contrast to the expected positive effects Lithrea is unlikely to facilitate seedling establishment of these exotic species in this area, and in fact in some habitats this effect could be negative. However, our results also suggest that a common mechanism proposed to resist invasion in forest ecosystems such as shading, probably is not sufficient to inhibit invasion in a semiarid region.  相似文献

The leaf-removing decapod crab, Ucides cordatus plays a key role as ecological engineer in Brazilian mangrove ecosystems. We analyzed the spatial distribution of a specific population at two different scales to observe how individual behavior could alter spatial population structure. First, we conducted a spatial point pattern analysis of the burrow entrances and the Rhizophora mangle prop roots on the mangrove floor at a scale of few meters. Secondly, we analyzed at a large scale (10–100 m) the potential effects of surface elevation, light intensity, prop root coverage, species of neighboring tree (R. mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, Avicennia germinans) and pneumatophore density on the size and number of burrow entrances. At the same large scale, we conducted an analysis of clustering of the crabs around the R. mangle trees. At small scale, the burrow entrances, although aggregated around the prop roots, showed a regularly spaced distribution (∼25 cm) signaling an intraspecific competition among the crabs. At large scale, crabs preferred to install their burrows at an intermediate level of surface elevation and prop root coverage, and in R. mangle-dominated areas. At the same kind of habitats, the largest burrows, and thus potentially the largest crabs, were found in higher number than on other habitats. The R. mangle-dominated areas preference was confirmed by an aggregating around R. mangle trees in R. mangle-dominated forest, but only of large individuals in L. racemosa-dominated forest. These observations lead us to the definition of a preferred habitat for U. cordatus. Competition leading to the small-scale regular patterns was proposed as an explanation for exclusion of smaller crabs from preferred habitats seen at large scale. We hypothesize that this preferred habitat might explain at regional scale the variation of U. cordatus importance in Neotropical mangroves.  相似文献

The giant water bug, subfamily Lethocerinae, which has the largest body size among Belostomatidae, is known to be a vertebrate specialist that preys upon fish, amphibians and snakes. However, there have been no reports concerning predation on a turtle by Lethocerinae. Here, I report that a male giant water bug Kirkaldyia (Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) (58.09 mm in total length) was catching hold of a turtle Chinemys reevesii (34.14 mm in carapace length) in a ditch adjoining a paddy rice field. This is a first report of K. deyrolli eating a turtle.  相似文献
