Egg parasitoids of the genus Anagrus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are natural enemies of many pests around the world. We used an integrative approach to characterize some species belonging to the Anagrus atomus group, using specimens reared from leafhoppers infesting some Lamiaceae. Starting from morphological identifications based on available keys, we carried out a multi-locus genetic characterization using phylogenetic and species delimitation analyses, and integrated it with biological and morphometric evidence. This approach revealed the existence of a new species, A. nepetellae sp. nov., here described along with its phenological traits. The approach also allowed us to characterize the expected taxonomic stability of other putative species within the group. We propose two new species groups called the atomus group sensu stricto and the vilis group, with the goal of streamlining the taxonomy of the atomus group. We also present a key for the identification of females of the European species of the atomus group sensu stricto. Some specimens show heterozygosity in 28S-D2 sequences, suggesting hybridization between A. atomus and A. nepetellae, which, if it is common between other species as well, could partly explain the taxonomic problems in the genus Anagrus. DNA sequencing of specimens reared by the same biofactory at different times suggests involuntary contamination leading to the displacement of a laboratory strain of A. atomus by A. nepetellae, which may have resulted from undetected partial reproductive compatibility.http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:DFCD7654-5AA5-4E4F-AE48-24377BAACEFE  相似文献

  • Divergence in seed germination patterns among populations of the same species is important for understanding plant responses to environmental gradients and potential plant sensitivity to climate change. In order to test responses to flooding and decreasing water potentials, over 3 years we germinated and grew seeds from three habitats of Euterpe edulis Mart. occurring along an altitudinal gradient.
  • Seed germination and root growth were evaluated under different water availability treatments: control, flood, −0.4 MPa, −0.8 MPa, in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014, and in the final year of the experiment (2014) at −1.0 MPa and −1.5 MPa.
  • Seeds from the montane habitat did not germinate in the flooding treatment. Seed germination of all three habitats decreased in the −1.5 MPa treatment and the montane habitat had lowest germination in this treatment. Time required for half of the seeds to germinate increased up to −0.8 MPa. Seeds from montane habitats germinated more slowly in all treatments. The only difference in seed germination synchrony was an increase in the submontane population under the flooding treatment. However, synchrony decreased at the lowest water potentials. Roots of the montane population were more vigorous in most treatments, except at −0.8 MPa.
  • The unusual ability of these seeds to germinate at low water potentials might be related to early seed germination at the onset of the rainy season, which potentially decreases seed predation pressure. Seeds of the montane population were more sensitive to both types of water stress. A predicted increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme high rainfall or drought events may predispose early stages of this population to adverse factors that might negatively affect population viability with elevational in future climate change scenarios.

The effects of after‐ripening (storage under warm, dry conditions) on seed germination was examined in six plant species from the arid zone of Western Australia with the aim of improving germination and germination rate for rehabilitation objectives. Study species (Acanthocarpus preissii, Anthocercis littorea, Dioscorea hastifolia, Eremophila oldfieldii, Thryptomene baeckeacea and Zygophyllum fruticulosum) were selected based on diverse plant habits, seed types and requirements for rehabilitation. After‐ripening was investigated by adjusting seed moisture content to 13 and 50 equilibrium relative humidity (eRH) at 23 °C and storing seeds at two temperatures (30 and 45 °C) from 1 to 18 months. Following storage, seeds were incubated in water, gibberellic acid (GA3) or karrikinolide (KAR1; the butenolide, 3‐methyl‐2H‐furo[2,3‐c]pyran‐2‐one). All after‐ripening conditions increased germination percentage and rate of A. littorea and D. hastifolia, with A. littorea only germinating when treated with GA3 or KAR1. The germination of Z. fruticulosum was dependent on after‐ripening temperature and seed moisture content. After‐ripening had a limited effect on the remaining three species. The restoration implications of the findings are discussed. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 161 , 411–421.  相似文献

The tropical rain forest pioneer tree Heliocarpus donnell-smithii Rose establishes itself only in light gaps of the forest canopy. A series of experiments with fluctuating temperatures have shown that the germination is increased if the temperature rises above 31°C during a few hours each day. The laboratory experiments were complemented with determinations of the seed viability in the soil each month during one year, and with determinations of germination under the natural diurnal fluctuation of temperature in a forest gap. Germination increases under fluctuating temperatures, and the seeds can remain dormant when buried in the soil during several months. The diurnal heating of the soil of light gaps as contrasted with the almost constant temperature under undisturbed canopies may be a precise environmental indicator of appropriate conditions for germination and establishment of the pioneer heliophytes of the rain forest.  相似文献

Abstract Severe category 4 Tropical Cyclone Larry, which crossed north‐east Queensland on 20 March 2006, provided a unique opportunity to examine the short‐term impacts of a major disturbance event on the population of a highly mobile threatened species, Pteropus conspicillatus. As we had recorded, the species’ population distribution in colonial roosts (camps) across the region each month for almost 2 years prior to Cyclone Larry, we continued monthly surveying of P. conspicillatus camp‐sites for a year post‐cyclone. Here we report on how P. conspicillatus responded and redistributed immediately after the cyclone, and over the subsequent year. Post‐cyclone, P. conspicillatus typically roosted in smaller camps than pre‐cyclone, suggesting that these animals had largely dispersed to locate available blossoms and fruit. For 6 months after Cyclone Larry, up to 90% of the pre‐cyclone P. conspicillatus population (ca. 250 000) was unaccounted for across the region. Information provided by the general public assisted us in locating six small camps of P. conspicillatus at ‘new’ locations, but contributed little to increase our overall population estimate for the species at this time. After November 2006, the number of P. conspicillatus built up at located camp‐sites until a post‐cyclone peak of 209 000 at the end of the study in March 2007, comparable with the population estimates in March 2005 and 2006. There is no evidence that the cyclone caused significant direct mortality among P. conspicillatus, although there may yet be longer‐term and indirect effects on population size. We suggest that redistribution by P. conspicillatus makes sense ecologically in the face of major habitat disturbance and short‐ to long‐term food resource limitation, and is not unlike the response of other Australian mainland Pteropus species to seasonal changes in food availability.  相似文献
