Background

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of maturation on the muscle quality of the lower limb muscles around puberty.

Methods

Subjects were 117 Japanese boys age 12 to 15 years. The maturity status was assessed by using a self-assessment of stage of pubic hair development based on the criteria of Tanner. On the basis of the criteria, subjects were divided into the prepubescent or pubescent group. Muscle thickness of knee extensors and plantar flexors were measured by a B-mode ultrasound. Muscle volume index (MV) was calculated from muscle thickness and limb length. Maximal voluntary isometric joint toques (TQ) of knee extension and ankle plantar flexion were measured using a myometer. Muscle quality was derived from dividing TQ by MV (TQ/MV).

Results

In both muscles, TQ-MV relationships were also similar between the prepubescent and pubescent groups, and there was no significant difference in TQ/MV between the two groups when chronological age was statistically adjusted.

Conclusion

The current results indicate that, for adolescent boys, the muscle quality of the lower limb muscles is not significantly influenced by maturation.  相似文献

The effects of 30 min of cooling (15 degrees C water) and warming (40 degrees C water) on arm muscle function were measured. A reference condition (24 degrees C air) was included. Of nine young male subjects the maximal grip force (Fmax), the time to reach 66% of Fmax (rate of force buildup) and the maximal rhythmic grip frequency were determined, together with surface electromyographic activity (EMG) of a forearm muscle (flexor digitorum superficialis). The results showed that in contrast to warming, cooling resulted in a significant decrease of 20% in the Fmax and a significant 50% decrease in force build-up time and the maximal rhythmic grip frequency. The relationship between the root mean square value (rms) of the EMG and the static grip force did not change due to temperature changes. The median power frequency (MPF) in the power spectrum of the EMG signal decreased by 50% due to cooling but remained unchanged with heating. During a sustained contraction at 15% of Fmax (Fmax depending on the temperature) the increase in the rms value with contraction time was 90% larger in the warm condition and 80% smaller in the cold condition compared to the increase in the reference condition. The MPF value remained constant during the warm and reference conditions but in the cold it started at a 50% lower value and increased with contraction time.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Background: Previous literature has shown in vivo changes in muscle-tendon interaction during exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercise. It is unclear whether these changes in muscle-tendon length during exhaustive SSC exercise are associated with changes in mechanical efficiency (ME). The purpose of the study was to investigate whether changes in platarflexor contractile component (CC) length, tendon length, and changes in plantarflexor muscle activity could explain reduction in ME during exhaustive SSC exercise. Methods: Eight males participated in an exhaustive hopping task to fatigue. Mechanical work and energy expenditure were calculated at different time-points during the hopping task. Furthermore, hopping kinetics and kinematics, medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle activity, and in vivo ultrasound of the MG were also collected at different time-points throughout the hopping task. Results: ME did not change during the hopping protocol despite shorter tendon and longer CC lengths as subjects approached exhaustion. Percent decreases in pennation angle and muscle thickness were most strongly correlated to time to exhaustion (r = 0.94, p  0.05; r = 0.87, p  0.05; respectively). Percent changes in CC length change and pennation angle were strongly correlated to percent decrease in maximal voluntary isometric plantarflexion (MVIP) force (r = −0.71, p  0.04; r = 0.70, p  0.05; respectively). Braking/push-off EMG ratio increased from initial pre-fatigue values to all other time points showing neuromuscular adaptations to altered muscle lengths. Conclusion: Findings from the current study suggest that changes in CC and tendon lengths occur during repetitive hopping to exhaustion, with the amount change strongly related to time to exhaustion. ME of hopping remained unchanged in the presence of altered CC and tendon lengths.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of changes in ankle joint angle on the mechanomyogram (MMG) amplitude of the human medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle during voluntary isometric plantarflexion contractions. Ten healthy individuals were asked to perform voluntary isometric contractions at six different contraction intensities (from 10% to 100%) and at three different ankle joint angles (plantarflexion of 26°; plantarflexion of 10°; dorsiflexion of 3°). MMG signals were recorded from the surface over the MG muscle, using a 3-axis accelerometer. The relations between root mean square (RMS) MMG and isometric plantarflexion torque at different ankle joint angles were characterized to evaluate the effects of altered muscle mechanical properties on RMS MMG.We found that the relation between RMS MMG and plantarflexion torque is changed at different ankle joint angles: RMS MMG increases monotonically with increasing the plantarflexion torque but decreases as the ankle joint became dorsiflexed. Moreover, RMS MMG shows a negative correlation with muscle length, with passive torque, and with maximum voluntary torque, which were all changed significantly at different ankle joint angles. Our findings demonstrate the potential effects of changing muscle mechanical properties on muscle vibration amplitude. Future studies are required to explore the major sources of this muscle vibration from the perspective of muscle mechanics and muscle activation level, attributable to changes in the neural command.  相似文献

Maximal mechanical power output and capacity of cyclists and young adults   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The maximal average power output (Wmax) has been examined in 10 male students, 22 pursuit and 12 sprint cyclists. In 24 of these subjects (8 students, 10 pursuit and 6 sprint cyclists), estimates of the maximal capacity (Wcap) of the short-term anaerobic energy yielding processes were made. The results show that the sprinters had a higher absolute Wmax (1241 +/- 266 W) and Wcap (16.7 +/- 4.9 kJ) than either the students (1019 +/- 183 W, 14.7 +/- 2.8 kJ) or the pursuit cyclists (962 +/- 206 W, 14.0 +/- 2.9 kJ). However, the differences were removed when the values were standardised for muscle size. In the sprinters the Wmax was attained at an optimal pedal frequency Vopt of 132 +/- 3 min-1 and the estimated maximal velocity of pedalling (V0) was 262 +/- 8 min-1. The comparable figures in the students and pursuit cyclists were 118 +/- 8 min-1, 235 +/- 17 min-1 and 122 +/- 6 min-1, 242 +/- 12 min-1 respectively. The coefficient of variation of duplicate measurements of Wcap was found to be +/- 9%. Using data of Wilkie (1968) for muscle phosphagen and glycolytic stores (27 mmol.kg-1), it was estimated that the probable efficiency of the anaerobic processes during maximal cycling was 0.22. It was concluded that Wmax and Wcap are largely determined by body size and muscularity. The efficiency of anaerobiosis appears to be of the same order of magnitude as found for oxidative work.  相似文献

To determine the non-uniform surface mechanical activity of human quadriceps muscle during fatiguing activity, surface mechanomyogram (MMG), or muscle sound, and surface electromyogram (EMG) were recorded from the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and vastus medialis (VM) muscles of seven subjects during unilateral isometric knee extension exercise. Time- and frequency-domain analyses of MMG and of EMG fatigued by 50 repeated maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) for 3 s, with 3-s relaxation in between, were compared among the muscles. The mean MVC force fell to 49.5 (SEM 2.0)% at the end of the repeated MVC. Integrated EMG decreased in a similar manner in each muscle head, but a marked non-uniformity was found for the decline in integrated MMG (iMMG). The fall in iMMG was most prominent for RF, followed by VM and VL. Moreover, the median frequency of MMG and the relative decrease in that of EMG in RF were significantly greater (P < 0.05) than those recorded for VL and VM. These results would suggest a divergence of mechanical activity within the quadriceps muscle during fatiguing activity by repeated MVC. Accepted: 19 January 1999  相似文献

The present study re-examines the 15% MVC concept, i.e. the existence of a circulatory steady-state in low intensity static contractions below 15% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Mean arterial blood pressure was studied during static endurance contractions of the elbow flexor and extensor muscles at forces corresponding to 10% and 40% MVC. Mean value for endurance time at 10% MVC was significantly longer for flexion [111.3 (SD 56.1) min] than for extension [18.1 (SD 7.5) min; n = 7]. At 40% MVC the difference in mean endurance time disappeared [2.3 (SD 0.7) min for elbow flexion and 2.3 (SD 0.7) min for elbow extension]. Mean arterial blood pressure exhibited a continuous and progressive increase during the 10% MVC contractions indicating that the 15% MVC concept would not appear to be valid. The terminal blood pressure value recorded at the point of exhaustion in the 10% MVC elbow extension experiment was identical to the peak pressure attained in the 40% MVC contraction. For the elbow flexors the terminal pressor response was slightly but significantly lower at 10% MVC [122.3 (SD 10.1) mmHg, 16.3 (SD 1.4) kPa] in comparison with 40% MVC [130.4 (SD 7.4) mmHg, 17.4 (SD 1.0) kPa]. When the circulation to the muscles was arrested just prior to the cessation of the contraction, blood pressure only partly recovered and remained elevated for as long as the occlusion persisted, indicating the level of pressure-raising muscle chemoreflexes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Subjects reporting neck/shoulder pain have been shown to generate less force during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC) of the shoulder muscles compared to healthy controls. This has been suggested to be caused by a pain-related decrease in voluntary activation (VA) rather than lack of muscle mass. The aim of the present study was to investigate VA of the trapezius muscle during MVCs in subjects with and without neck/shoulder pain by use of the twitch interpolation technique.Ten cases suffering from pain and ten age and gender matched, healthy controls were included in the study. Upper trapezius muscle thickness was measured using ultrasonography and pain intensity was measured on a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS). VA was calculated from five maximal muscle activation attempts. Superimposed stimuli were delivered to the accessory nerve at peak force and during a 2% MVC following the maximal contraction.Presented as mean ± SD for cases and controls, respectively: VAS; 16.0 ± 14.4 mm and 2.1 ± 4.1 mm (P = 0.004), MVC; 545 ± 161 N and 664 ± 195 N (P = 0.016), upper trapezius muscle thickness; 10.9 ± 1.9 mm and 10.4 ± 1.5 mm (P = 0.20), VA; 93.6 ± 14.2% and 96.3 ± 6.0% (P = 0.29).In spite of significantly eight-fold higher pain intensity and ∼20% lower MVC for cases compared to controls, no difference was found in VA. Possible explanations for the reduction in MVC could be differences in co-activation of antagonists and synergists as well as muscle quality.  相似文献

Varying the degree of weight-bearing (WB) and/or knee flexion (KF) angle during a plantar-flexion maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) has been proposed to alter soleus and/or gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis activation. This study compared the surface EMG signals from the triceps surae of 27 men and 27 women during WB and non weight bearing (NWB) plantar-flexion MVICs performed at 0° and 45° of KF. The aim was to determine which condition was most effective at eliciting the greatest EMG signals from soleus, gastrocnemius medialis, and gastrocnemius lateralis, respectively, for subsequent use for the normalization of EMG signals. WB was more effective than NWB at eliciting the greatest signals from soleus (p = 0.0021), but there was no difference with respect to gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis (p ? 0.2482). Although the greatest EMG signals during MVICs were more frequently elicited at 0° of KF from gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis, and at 45° from soleus (p < 0.001); neither angle consistently captured peak gastrocnemius medialis, gastrocnemius lateralis or soleus activity. The present findings encourage more consistent use of WB plantar flexion MVICs for soleus normalization; confirm that both WB and NWB procedures can elicit peak gastrocnemius activity; and emphasize the fact that no single KF angle consistently evokes selective maximal activity of any individual triceps surae muscle.  相似文献

Muscle compression commonly occurs in daily life (for instance wearing backpacks or compression garments, and during sitting). However, the effects of the compression on contraction dynamics in humans are not well examined. The aim of the study was to quantify the alterations of contraction dynamics and muscle architecture in human muscle with external transverse loads. The posterior tibialis nerve of 29 subjects was stimulated to obtain the maximal double-twitch force of the gastrocnemius muscle with and without transverse compression that was generated using an indentor. The muscle architecture was determined by a sonographic probe that was embedded within the indentor. Five stimulations each were conducted at 5 conditions: (1) pretest (unloaded), (2) indentor loading with 2 kg, (3) 4.5 kg, (4) 10 kg, and (5) posttest (unloaded).Compared to the pretest maximal force decreased by 9%, 13% and 16% for 2 kg, 4.5 kg and 10 kg, respectively. The half-relaxation time increased with increased transverse load whereas the rate of force development decreased from pretest to 2 kg and from 4.5 kg to 10 kg. The lifting height of the indentor increased with transverse load from 2 kg to 4.5 kg but decreased from 4.5 kg to 10 kg. Increases in pennation during the twitches were reduced at the highest transverse load. The results demonstrate changes of the contraction dynamics due to transversal muscle loading. Those alterations are associated with the applied pressure, changes in muscle architecture and partitioning of muscle force in transversal and longitudinal direction.  相似文献

Fractal dimension (FD) has been proved useful in quantifying the complexity of dynamical signals in biology and medicine. In this study, we measured FDs of human electroencephalographic (EEG) signals at different levels of handgrip forces. EEG signals were recorded from five major motor-related cortical areas in eight normal healthy subjects. FDs were calculated using three different methods. The three physiological periods of handgrip (command preparation, movement and holding periods) were analyzed and compared. The results showed that FDs of the EEG signals during the movement and holding periods increased linearly with handgrip force, whereas FD during the preparation period had no correlation with force. The results also demonstrated that one method (Katz’s) gave greater changes in FD, and thus, had more power in capturing the dynamic changes in the signal. The linear increase of FD, together with results from other EEG and neuroimaging studies, suggest that under normal conditions the brain recruits motor neurons at a linear progress when increasing the force.  相似文献

Six healthy men performed sustained static handgrip exercise for 2 min at 40% maximal voluntary contraction followed by a 6-min recovery period. Heart rate (fc), arterial blood pressures, and forearm blood flow were measured during rest, exercise, and recovery. Potassium ([K+]) and lactate concentrations in blood from a deep forearm vein were analysed at rest and during recovery. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and fc declined immediately after exercise and had returned to control levels about 2 min into recovery. The time course of the changes in MAP observed during recovery closely paralleled the changes in [K+] (r = 0.800, P < 0.01), whereas the lactate concentration remained elevated throughout the recovery period. The close relationship between MAP and [K+] was also confirmed by experiments in which a 3-min arterial occlusion period was applied during recovery to the exercised arm by an upper arm cuff. The arterial occlusion affected MAP while fc recovered at almost the same rate as in the control experiment. Muscle biopsies were taken from the brachioradialis muscle and analysed for fibre composition and capillary supply. The MAP at the end of static contraction and the [K+] appearing in the effluent blood immediately after contraction were positively correlated to the relative content of fast twitch (% FT) fibres (r = 0.886 for MAP vs % FT fibres, P < 0.05 and r = 0.878 for [K+] vs % FT fibres, P < 0.05). Capillary to fibre ratio showed an inverse correlation to % FT fibres (r = -0.979, P < 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Maximum voluntary contractions (MVCs) are often used for the normalisation of electromyography data to enable comparison of signal patterns within and between study participants. Recommendations regarding the types of tasks that are needed to collect MVCs for the muscles of the forearm have been made, specifically advocating the use of resisted moment tasks to get better estimates of forearm MVCs. However, a protocol detailing which specific tasks to employ has yet to be published. Furthermore, the effects of limb dominance on the collection of MVCs have not been considered previously. Muscle activity was monitored while 23 participants performed nine isometric, resisted tasks. The tasks that are likely to elicit MVC in the flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis, flexor digitorum superficialis, extensor carpi ulnaris, extensor carpi radialis, extensor digitorum communis, and pronator teres were identified. Thus, targeted protocols can be designed to mitigate against fatigue. Hand dominance had limited effect, with differences being found only in the finger flexors and extensors (p< 0.03). Thus, use of the contralateral flexor digitorum superficialis and extensor digitorum communis muscles to obtain baselines for activation levels and patterns may not be appropriate.  相似文献

The contractile properties of muscle are usually investigated by analysing the force signal recorded during electrically elicited contractions. The electrically stimulated muscle shows surface oscillations that can be detected by an accelerometer; the acceleration signal is termed the surface mechanomyogram (MMG). In the study described here we compared, in the human tibialis anterior muscle, changes in the MMG and force signal characteristics before, and immediately after fatigue, as well as during 6 min of recovery, when changes in the contractile properties of muscle occur. Fatigue was induced by sustained electrical stimulation. The final aim was to evaluate the reliability of the MMG as a tool to follow the changes in the mechanical properties of muscle caused by fatigue. Because of fatigue, the parameters of the force peak, the peak rate of force production and the peak of the acceleration of force production (d2F/dt2) decreased, while the contraction time and the half-relaxation time (1/2-RT) increased. The MMG peak-to-peak (p-p) also decreased. The attenuation rate of the force oscillation amplitude and MMG p-p at increasing stimulation frequency was greater after fatigue. With the exception of 1/2-RT, all of the force and MMG parameters were restored within 2 min of recovery. A high correlation was found between MMG and d2F/dt2 in un-fatigued muscle and during recovery. In conclusion, the MMG reflects specific aspects of muscle mechanics and can be used to follow the changes in the contractile properties of muscle caused by localised muscle fatigue.  相似文献

Apart from a few experimental studies muscle viscosity has not received much recent analytical attention as a determinant of the contractile process. This is surprising, since any muscle cell is 80% water, and may undergo large shape changes during its working cycle. Intuitively one might expect the viscosity of the solvent to be an important determinant of the physiological activity of muscle tissue. This was apparent to pioneers of the study of muscle contraction such as Hill and his contemporaries, whose putative theoretical formulations contained terms related to muscle viscosity. More recently, though, a hydrodynamic calculation by Huxley, using a solvent viscosity close to that of water, has been held to demonstrate that viscous forces are negligible in muscle contraction. We have re-examined the role of viscosity in contraction, postulating impulsive acto-myosin forces that are opposed by a viscous resistance between the filaments. The viscous force required, 104 times the hydrodynamic estimate, is close to recent experimental measurements, themselves 102–103 times the hydrodynamic estimate. This also agrees with contemporary measurements of cytoplasmic viscosity in other biological cells using magnetic bead micro-rheometry. These are several orders of magnitude greater than the viscosity of water. In the course of the analysis we have derived the force-velocity equation for an isolated half-sarcomere containing a single actin filament for the first time, and from first principles. We conclude that muscle viscosity is indeed important for the contractile process, and that it has been too readily discounted.  相似文献

Contractile filaments in skeletal muscle are moved by less than 2 nm for each ATP used. If just one cross-bridge is attached to each thin filament at any instant then this distance represents the fundamental myosin cross-bridge step size (i.e. the distance one cross-bridge moves a thin filament in one ATP-splitting cycle). However, most contraction models assume many cross-bridges are attached at any instant along each thin filament. The purpose of this study was to establish whether the net filament sliding per ATP used could be explained quantitatively in terms of a cross-bridge model in which multiple cross-bridges are attached along each thin filament. It was found that the relationship between net filament sliding per ATP split and the load against which the muscle shortens is compatible with such a model and furthermore predicts that the cross-bridge step size is between 7.5 and 12.5 nm over most of the range of loads. These values were similar for different muscle fibre types.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether long-term, heavy resistance training would cause adaptations in rat skeletal muscle structure and function. Ten male Wistar rats (3 weeks old) were trained to climb a 40-cm vertical ladder (4 days/week) while carrying progressively heavier loads secured to their tails. After 26 weeks of training the rats were capable of lifting up to 800 g or 140% of their individual body mass for four sets of 12–15 repetitions per session. No difference in body mass was observed between the trained rats and age-matched sedentary control rats. Absolute and relative heart mass were greater in trained rats than control rats. When expressed relative to body mass, the mass of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles was greater in trained rats than control rats. No difference in absolute muscle mass or maximum force-producing capacity was evident in either the EDL or soleus muscles after training, although both muscles exhibited an increased resistance to fatigue. Individual fibre hypertrophy was evident in all four skeletal muscles investigated, i.e. EDL, soleus, plantaris and rectus femoris muscles of trained rats, but muscle fibre type proportions within each of the muscles tested remained unchanged. Despite an increased ability of the rats to lift progressively heavier loads, this heavy resistance training model did not induce gross muscle hypertrophy nor did it increase the force-producing capacity of the EDL or soleus muscles. Skeletal muscles are embedded in an environment of other muscles, connective tissue, and bones, which may transfer transversal forces to the muscle tissue, thereby compressing it. In a recent study we demonstrated that transversal loading of a muscle with 1.3 N cm−2 reduces maximum isometric force (Fim) and rate of force development by approximately 5% and 25%, respectively. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of increasing transversal muscle loading on contraction dynamics.  相似文献

Recent studies demonstrated that uniaxial transverse loading (FG) of a rat gastrocnemius medialis muscle resulted in a considerable reduction of maximum isometric muscle force (ΔFim). A hill-type muscle model assuming an identical gearing G between both ΔFim and FG as well as lifting height of the load (Δh) and longitudinal muscle shortening (ΔlCC) reproduced experimental data for a single load. Here we tested if this model is able to reproduce experimental changes in ΔFim and Δh for increasing transverse loads (0.64 N, 1.13 N, 1.62 N, 2.11 N, 2.60 N). Three different gearing ratios were tested: (I) constant Gc representing the idea of a muscle specific gearing parameter (e.g. predefined by the muscle geometry), (II) Gexp determined in experiments with varying transverse load, and (III) Gf that reproduced experimental ΔFim for each transverse load.Simulations using Gc overestimated ΔFim (up to 59%) and Δh (up to 136%) for increasing load. Although the model assumption (equal G for forces and length changes) held for the three lower loads using Gexp and Gf, simulations resulted in underestimation of ΔFim by 38% and overestimation of Δh by 58% for the largest load, respectively. To simultaneously reproduce experimental ΔFim and Δh for the two larger loads, it was necessary to reduce Fim by 1.9% and 4.6%, respectively. The model seems applicable to account for effects of muscle deformation within a range of transverse loading when using a linear load-dependent function for G.
