Two new species of the genus Galium are described from the Iberian Peninsula: G. moralesianum Ortega-Olivencia & Devesa, and G. talaveranum Ortega-Olivencia & Devesa. The first grows on limestone or dolomitic-limestone outcrops in south-east Spain (the Segura and Gádor mountain ranges) and shows morphological similarities with G. boissieranum Ehrend. & Krendl, which is endemic to southern Spain (mountains of Málaga). The second inhabits the margins of water courses, alder stands and cork-oak dehesas (parkland-type systems) of the west of the Iberian Peninsula, and is morphologically reminiscent of G. mollugo L. The chromosome numbers of these two species and of G. boissieranum are given.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 143 , 177−187.  相似文献

Three new species ofColchicum (Colchicaceae) are described (C. chimonanthum, C. rausii, C. confusum), all confined to Greece. The first one flowers in very early spring, the other two are autumn-flowering with hysteranthous leaves appearing in the spring. Revisions are included of two other autumn-flowering species (C. haynaldii andC. autumnale) which are geographically over-lapping with and may be confused withC. confusum. Synonym lists, typifications, chromosome numbers, and notes on differences from other species, phenology, vegetative reproduction, phytogeography and ecology are provided for all.  相似文献

After a biometric study the taxon Asyneuma pichleri (Vis.) D. Lakui & F. Conti comb. nova is re-evaluated. This taxon, endemic to the Balkan Peninsula, has been confused in the past with A. trichocalycinum (Ten.) K. Malý. Lectotypes are designated for both taxa. Statistically significant differences were found between A. pichleri (from Balkan peninsula) and A. trichocalycinum (from Apennines) based on multivariate analysis and discriminant analysis of morphometric data. A. pichleri is morphologically well differentiated from the A. trichocalycinum by its longer corolla lobes and style. These differences are particularly pronounced when considering the ratios between corolla length/width and style length/stigma length. We would particularly like to thank Prof. Radomir Lakui from Sarajevo, who has pointed to differences between the Apennines and Balkan populations of the A. trichocalycinum complex, and who has induced our research. We would also like to extend our gratitude to our colleagues for helping us in solving many problems and dilemmas: Annalisa Santangelo (Herbarium Neapolitanum, NAP), Rossella Marcucci (Erbario Patavinum, PAD), Anna Millozza (Erbario – RO, Dipartimento di Biologia Vegetale Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza), Prof. Vladimir Stevanovi and Gordana Tomovi (Department of Plant Ecology and Phytogeography, Faculty of Biology University of Belgrade), Sneana Vukojii (Herbarium of Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden Jevremovac University of Belgrade, BEOU), Olja Vasi and Marjan Niketi (Natural-History Museum Belgrade, BEO), Prof. Werner Greuter (Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem), Dr Kit Tan (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh), Prof. Vlado Matevski (Faculty of Natural Sciences University of Skopje), Chavdar Gussev (Institute of Botany, Bulgarian Academy of Science), and to anonymous reviewers for many proposals and improvements.  相似文献

Abstract:A new corticolous lichen, Rinodina turfaceoides, is described from the Serra de Estrela (Portugal). It is characterized mainly by the blastidiate thallus, large apothecia covered by a thick, yellow-orange pruina, large Physcia -type ascospores and chemistry. The new species is compared with the closely related but mainly muscicolous, R. turfacea, as well as with other corticolous Rinodina species with vegetative propagules, including R. colobinoides and R. disjuncta. Habit photographs of the new species and illustrations of its ascospores are also provided.  相似文献

Wall lizards of the genus Podarcis (Sauria, Lacertidae) comprise 17 currently recognized species in southern Europe, where they are the predominant nonavian reptile group. The taxonomy of Podarcis is complex and unstable. Based on DNA sequence data, the species of Podarcis falls into four main groups that have substantial geographic coherence (Western island group, southwestern group, Italian group, and Balkan Peninsula group). The Balkan Peninsula species are divided into two subgroups: the subgroup of P. taurica (P. taurica, P. milensis, P. gaigeae, and perhaps P. melisellensis), and the subgroup of P. erhardii (P. erhardii and P. peloponnesiaca). In the present study, the question of phylogenetic relationships among the species of Podarcis encountered in the Balkan Peninsula was addressed using partial mtDNA sequences for cytochrome b (cyt b) and 16S rRNA (16S). The data support the monophyly of Podarcis and suggest that there are three phylogenetic clades: the clade A (P. taurica, P. gaigeae, P. milensis, and P. melisellensis); the clade B (P. erhardii and P. peloponnesiaca), and the clade C (P. muralis and P. sicula). By examining intraspecific relationships it was found that extant populations of P. erhardii are paraphyletic. Furthermore, subspecies previously defined on the basis of morphological characteristics do not correspond to different molecular phylogenetic clades, suggesting that their status should be reconsidered. The distinct geographic distribution of the major clades of the phylogenetic tree and its topology suggest a spatial and temporal sequence of phylogenetic separations that coincide with some major paleogeographic separations during the geological history of the Aegean Sea. The results stress the need for a reconsideration of the evolutionary history of Balkan Podarcis species and help overcome difficulties that classical taxonomy has encountered at both the species and subspecies level.  相似文献

Delineating biogeographical regions is a critical step towards the establishment and evaluation of conservation priorities. In the present study, we analysed the distribution patterns of the freshwater fish of an understudied European biodiversity hotspot, the Balkan Peninsula. Based on the most extensive available database of native freshwater fish species distributions, we performed a hierarchical clustering analysis to identify the major biogeographical regions of the Balkan Peninsula. We also highlighted the ‘hottest hotspots’ of freshwater fish diversity across the delimited biogeographical regions by describing the patterns of species richness, endemic and vulnerable species; indicator species were also determined. The bioregionalisation scheme consisted of eight groups of drainage basins that correspond to distinct regions of the Balkan Peninsula. Overall, the delineated biogeographical regions varied in terms of species richness, endemism, vulnerability (i.e. extinction threats) and indicator species composition. From a conservation perspective, this study emphasises the prioritisation of areas characterised by high levels of irreplaceability (endemism) and vulnerability (i.e. the Attikobeotia region, Ionian Sea and Prespa Lakes) and stresses the necessity of implementing a network of protected freshwater areas across the Balkan Peninsula.  相似文献

Boza is a low-pH and low-alcohol cereal-based beverage produced in the Balkan Peninsula. From a total population of 9 × 106 colony-forming units ml−1, four isolates (JW3BZ, JW6BZ, JW11BZ, and JW15BZ) produced bacteriocins active against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive bacteria. Bacteriocin JW15BZ inhibited the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The producer strains were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum (strains JW3BZ and JW6BZ) and L. fermentum (strains JW11BZ and JW15BZ). The spectrum of antimicrobial activity, characteristics, and mode of action of these bacteriocins were compared with bacteriocins previously described for lactic-acid bacteria isolated from boza.  相似文献

The biological analysis of several populations confirms the existence in the Iberian Peninsula of two species of Muscari subgenus Leopoldia: M. comosum and M. matritensis (the latter described as new). Karyologically, they differ in at least a translocation rearrangement, in the presence of heterochromatin, which is lacking in M. matritensis, and in some chromosomal characters. At the genic level, the distance between M. comosum and M. matritensis is high (0.378). Morphologically, they show some differences in floral structure which are correlated with different reproductive systems, allogamy in M. comosum and autogamy in M. matritensis. The possible evolutionary relationships between these taxa is discussed.  相似文献

The spatial genetic structure of Martino's vole, a rare palaeoendemic species of the western Balkans, was investigated using DNA isolated from archived museum samples. The study was based on partial sequencing (555 bp) of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene for 63 specimens from 20 different localities throughout the species' range. Three highly divergent allopatric phylogenetic lineages (Northwestern, Central and Southeastern) were recognized among 47 haplotypes, suggesting three independent glacial differentiation centres within the western Balkans. The Northwestern lineage, which showed the highest divergence from all other samples (mean sequence divergence of 6.64% +/- 1.10), comprised samples collected from northwest of the Neretva River in Croatia, western Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Central and Southeastern lineages were separated by an average sequence divergence of 2.95% +/- 0.66 and were geographically divided by the Drim River (the Kosovo Basin in Serbia). Overall, haplotype diversity decreased from the Northwestern lineage to the Central and subsequently the Southeastern lineage, in a geographical pattern consistent with a stepping stone colonization. The observed distribution indicates a gradual southerly expansion with subsequent allopatry across the Neretva River and Drim River approximately 1 and 0.3 million years ago, respectively. Such a scenario is concordant with palaeontological evidence. Several highly divergent sublineages within the Northwestern and Central lineages showed no significant geographical structuring, suggesting secondary contact of allopatrically evolved lineages. We hypothesize that the topographical complexity of the Balkans promoted allopatry and isolation on a small geographical scale during interglacial periods, with secondary contact during glacial maxima. Furthermore, the three main lineages should be regarded as evolutionary significant units with important implications for conservation. Ecological data show that the Northwestern lineage in particular fulfils all criteria for a highly endangered, evolutionarily significant unit.  相似文献

Hieracium petrovae Vladimirov & Szeląg sp. nov. , a new diploid (2 n  = 18) species in H. sect. Pannosa Zahn, is described and illustrated from the Rhodope Mountains, South Bulgaria, and compared with related taxa. It grows in relict habitats in crevices of limestone rock together with many Balkan endemics. H. petrovae is morphologically similar to taxa from the H. pannosum , H. pilosissimum and H. heldreichii groups (collective species sensu Zahn) to some of which it is a presumed ancestral species.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 261–265.  相似文献

Italian representatives of the Cardamine pratensis group were investigated using morphometric, karyological, and molecular (AFLP-fingerprinting) analyses. Focus was on resolving the taxonomic and evolutionary position of C. granulosa from Piemonte (NW Italy) and of populations from central Italy, previously included in C. granulosa or C. pratensis s. str. Results show that C. granulosa is a morphologically and genetically well defined diploid species, but is extremely rare and restricted to a small area in Piemonte. Central Italian populations differ from both C. granulosa and C. pratensis s. str., and, although the morphological differentiation is not strongly pronounced, they show marked molecular divergence, suggesting recognition as a new species, Cardamine apennina. Because of their restricted distribution and diploid chromosomal level, C. apennina and C. granulosa may represent basal and quite isolated lineages, whereas reticulation on diploid and polyploid level has affected remaining lineages of the C. pratensis group. Both Italian endemics are endangered due to rarity and habitat loss. A key for identification of the Italian taxa of the C. pratensis group is also provided.  相似文献

Sorbus subgenus Soraria encompasses taxa originating from spontaneous hybridization between members of subgenera Aria and Sorbus disjunctly distributed across Europe and Asia. Using molecular data (amplified fragment length polymorphisms, plastid DNA sequences and nuclear microsatellites), flow cytometry (allowing for the determination of ploidy and mode of reproduction) and morphology, we disentangled the relationships among polyploid cytotypes and explored their relationships with their diploid ancestors. Among others, we focused on a large, geographically isolated hybrid population in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Molecular and morphological analyses confirmed the distinct position of this population in relation to its parental (S. aria and S. aucuparia) and other hybridogenous taxa originating independently from the same parents in different parts of Europe. After establishing its genetic and morphological divergence, we describe the isolated Bosnian population as a new tetraploid apomictic species, S orbus bosniaca , discuss its taxonomic status and propose conservation measures to protect the locus classicus of this new Balkan endemic. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 178 , 670–685.  相似文献
