We used a model plant-aphid system to investigate whether the aphid-specific entomopathogenic fungus Pandora neoaphidis responds to aphid-induced defence by the broad-bean plant, Vicia faba. Laboratory experiments indicated that neither in vivo sporulation, conidia size nor the in vitro growth of P. neoaphidis was affected by Acyrthosiphon pisum-induced V. faba volatiles. The proportion of conidia germinating on A. pisum feeding on previously damaged plants was significantly greater than on aphids feeding on undamaged plants, suggesting a direct functional effect of the plant volatiles on the fungus. However, there were no significant differences in the infectivity of P. neoaphidis towards A. pisum feeding on either undamaged V. faba plants or plants previously infested with A. pisum. Therefore, these results provide no evidence to suggest that P. neoaphidis contributes to plant indirect defence strategies.  相似文献

According to an established concept, injury of the phloem triggers local sieve plate occlusion including callose-mediated constriction and, possibly, protein plugging of the sieve pores. Sieve plate occlusion can also be achieved by distant stimuli, depends on the passage of electropotential waves (EPWs), and is reversible in intact plants. The time-course of the wound response was studied in sieve elements of main veins of intact Vicia faba plants using confocal and multiphoton microscopy. Only 15-45 s after burning a leaf tip, forisomes (giant protein bodies specific for legume sieve tubes) suddenly dispersed, as observed at 3-4 cm from the stimulus site. The dispersion was reversible; the forisomes had fully re-contracted 7-15 min after burning. Meanwhile, callose appeared at the sieve pores in response to the heat shock. Callose production reached a maximum after approximately 20 min and was also reversible; callose degraded over the subsequent 1-2 h. The heat induction of both modes of occlusion coincided with the passage of an EPW visualized by electrophysiology or the potential-sensitive dye RH-414. In contrast to burning, cutting of the leaf tip induced neither an EPW nor callose deposition. The data are consistent with a remote-controlled occlusion of sieve plates depending on the longitudinal propagation of an EPW releasing Ca(2+) into the sieve element lumen. It is hypothesized that forisome plugs and callose constriction are removed once the cytosolic calcium level has returned to the initial level in those sieve tubes.  相似文献

Phloem injury triggers local sieve-plate occlusion including callose-mediated constriction and protein plugging of sieve pores. In intact plants, reversible sieve-plate occlusion is induced by electric potential waves (EPWs)—accompanied by Ca2+-influx—as result of distant burning. Here, we present additional results which pertain to (a) the variability of EPW-profiles in relation to forisome conformation in intact Vicia faba plants and (b) the differential occlusion reactions to burning and cutting in various plant species. Abstract Aggregative egg distribution by Helicoverpa spp. within experimental field plots of chickpea containing various contaminant plant species was documented at different stages of plant growth. More eggs were laid on contaminant faba and wheat plants than on the surrounding chickpea. The level of egg aggregation on faba and wheat plants increased with general crop growth, becoming evident before a significant disparity in growth rates between these species and the surrounding chickpea became apparent. In chickpea plots contaminated with canola, aggregative oviposition activity on the contaminant plants was observed in the early seedling stage whilst a clear height differential between the two species was evident. Total Helicoverpa egg density on contaminant plants was not correlated with height above chickpea for any of the contaminant species. It is proposed that the aggregative oviposition behaviour of Helicoverpa spp. in contaminated chickpea results from differential apparency of the contaminant plants to ovipositing moths. Differential apparency may result from several factors including growth rate and morphological differences between chickpea and the contaminants. Physiological changes in chickpea, including growth stage-related changes in acid production by the foliage, may also contribute to the greater apparency of contaminant plants in chickpea plots. The implications of differential host plant apparency for insect pest management are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Fire and herbivory are known to modify plant community structure. Many studies have suggested that fire ashes may increase soil nutrients in dystrophic soils. Herbivores may also change plant community structure through direct effects of herbivory and affecting nutrient cycling. Leaf‐cutting ants were traditionally viewed as herbivores, although their role may be more complex, because their nests affect both chemical and physical soil properties, thus affecting plants indirectly. We investigated the effects of frequent burning and of leaf‐cutting ants on the nutrient status of an herbaceous and a shrub species occurring in the Brazilian Cerrado, a habitat that is characterized by natural burnings. The proximity of ant nests resulted in an increase of nutrients in the leaves of both vegetation strata, whereas burning sometimes resulted in a decrease of nutrients. Our results do not lead to a possible positive effect of fire on plant nutrient content. On the other hand, ant nests may represent an important source of nutrients for plants on the nutrient‐depleted Cerrado soils and may accelerate vegetation recovery after burning.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out in the two growing seasons of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 on faba bean (Vicia faba) plants in the Experimental Farm of Agriculture Research Station at Nubaria region, Alexandria, which is considered as a newly reclaimed calcareous soil. The present investigation aimed to evaluate the effect of spraying faba bean plants with certain micronutrients, i.e. Iron, Manganese and Zinc either in single double or triple combinations on the infestation by the aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch (Aphididae, Homoptera) and the leaf miner, Liriomyza trfolü (Burgess) (Agromyzidae, Diptera). The infestation by these insects was assessed using the parameters of Infestation grades as well as the injury indices. Faba bean plants cv. Giza Blanca were sprayed twice (45 and 66 days) after planting with the above-mentioned micronutrients. However, results of this investigation showed, with no doubt, that Mn, Zn and Fe individually or in double or triple combinations have increased to varied extents the infestation rates (%) of faba bean plants compared to the untreated ones. Such varied increases were mainly due to the metabolic roles of the used foliar sprays and their interactions, which indirectly affect the physio-biological actions of plants that may render them suitable for either A. craccivora or L. trifoii reproduction. This phenomenon might be also due to the different environmental factors. In both seasons, the relationship between nutrients applications and pests Infestation followed the same trend of increase in the percentages of infested plants. This assures and confirms the constant metabolic roles of such micronutrients. The biological seed weight (ton/fed.) was positively affected by the application of the used micronutrients. It is worth mentioning that the maximum response was observed in case of the triple treatment followed by the double and single treatments in a descending order. Application of the investigated micronutrients alone or in mixtures resulted in significant increases in yield and its components. Such increases were due to the fact that ions of Zn, Fe and Mn are cofactors of several enzymes, but rarely if ever with a high degree of specificity.  相似文献

The aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) is known as worldwide important pest. It causes serious injuries to crops, but is also able to feed on various cultivated and wild plants. Some programs are developped to control this aphid. In many studies, hoverfy Episyrphus balteatus De Geer (Diptera: Syrphidae) is used as an efficient and aphid specific predator in biological control systems. In this work, we study cotton aphid choice plant discrimination, the effect of host plants on its developpment (fecondity and mortality), and the E. balteatus foraging and oviposition behavior according aphid host plants. Biologic parameters were observed using various plant combinations. E. balteatus behavioral observations were conducted using the Noldus Observer v.5.0. A. gossypii makes discriminant choice of his hosts, with better preference on Cucurbita pepo L. (Cucurbitaceae) and Capsicum annuum L. (Solanaceae). Dacryodes edulis (G. Don) H.J. Lam. (Burseraceae) and Vicia faba L. (Fabaceae) are the midle choice while Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae) is less chosen. A. gossypii develops easily on C. pepo, and weakly on Canuum, H. sabdariffa, and V. faba. D. edulis induces very high mortality to A. gossypii. According to E. balteatus behavior, A. gossypii is more attractive when infesting C. pepo and V. faba, less on, H. sabdariffa. While non-infested, V. faba appeared to be more attractive for the hoverfly, but without significant differnce compared to other plants. Our results highlited the importance of interactions between aphids and their host plants and the prey-host influence on a specific aphid predatory hoverfy. Other ways like melon aphid and its host plant volatils emission, in correlation with this work, are to investigated to complete this study and perform melon aphid biological control.  相似文献

Abstract:  In order to establish the host range of the pea aphid subspecies, Acyrthosiphon pisum ssp. destructor , and hence from which plant species pea crops are likely to become infested, the performance of this aphid on different leguminous plants was assessed. The plant species used were: Lotus uliginosus , Medicago sativa , Melilotus officinalis , Ononis repens , Sarothamnus scoparius , Trifolium hybridum , Trifolium pratense , Trifolium repens , Vicia cracca and Vicia faba . Vicia faba and Trifolium hybridum were the plants on which aphids reached the greatest size, took the least time to reach maturity, and experienced the lowest mortality. The time taken for the aphids to develop to maturity was negatively correlated with adult size, whereas survival to maturity was positively correlated with adult size. The host preference of the aphids was also assessed. The plant species selected as hosts by alatae were those on which their offspring performed best.  相似文献

桂西北喀斯特人为干扰区植被自然恢复22年后群落特征   总被引:26,自引:7,他引:26  
采用全面调查和样方调查的方法,以坡面为尺度,以顶极群落为对照,运用干扰理论和多样性分析方法,研究了桂西北喀斯特4类典型干扰区自然恢复22a之后植被特征及空间分布的变化。结果表明,干扰区的物种多样性丧失严重,共出现维管束植物91科206属241种,仅有自然保护区的26.6%,6种植被类型的顺向演替系列为石漠化稀疏草丛→草丛→灌丛→藤刺灌丛→落叶阔叶林→常绿落叶阔叶混交林片段。随着坡位的上升,群落的高度、盖度、生物量和物种多样性急剧下降。密度则呈少、多、次少的单峰分布状态,各项指标均远低于自然保护区。不同干扰方式对植被自然恢复的影响不同,其中整坡火烧+垦殖的破坏性最大,呈现了石漠化景观,整坡火烧+放牧次之,采樵属选择性干扰,采樵+放牧+坡脚火烧的恢复相对较快,没有放牧干扰的采樵+坡脚火烧恢复更好。此外还针对性地提出了桂西北喀斯特干扰区在不同立地类型上人工与自然相结合的4条植被恢复途径。对因各种人为干扰导致的桂西北喀斯特生态系统处于极度退化状态下的植被恢复建设和生态重建具有重要的理论价值和实际意义。  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of inoculating Vicia faba plants (broad beens) raised in clean and oily sand with nodule-forming rhizobia and plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on growth of these plants in sand and to test whether this can improve the phytoremediation potential of this crop for oily desert areas. It was found that crude oil in sand at concentrations < 1.0% (w/w) enhanced the plant heights, their fresh and dry weights, the total nodule weights per plant, and the nitrogen contents of shoots and fruits. Similar enhancing effects were recorded when roots of the young plants were inoculated with nodule bacteria alone, PGPR alone, or a mixture of one strain of nodule bacteria and one of the PGPR. Such plant growth effects were associated with a better phytoremediation potential of V. faba plants for oily sand. The total numbers of oil-utilizing bacteria increased in the rhizosphere and more hydrocarbons were eliminated in sand close to the roots. The nodule bacteria tested were two strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum and the PGPR were Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia liquefaciens. The four strains were found to use crude oil, n-octadecane, and phenanthrene as sole sources of carbon and energy. It was concluded that coinoculation of V. faba plant roots in oily sand with nodule bacteria and PGPR enhances the phytoremediation potential of this plant for oily desert sand through improving plant growth and nitrogen fixation.  相似文献

Abstract. Changes in species richness and species turnover during secondary succession following experimental disturbance were studied in eight permanent plots in a species‐rich dry heathland in the southern part of the Czech Republic. The treatments applied were sod‐cutting, burning, cutting of above‐ground biomass, and control. The plots were sampled annually between 1992 and 2000; species richness was analysed at three scales, 25 cm × 25 cm, 1 m × 1 m, and 3 m × 3 m. Disturbances resulted in increased species richness. The highest vascular plant richness was attained during the secondary succession after sod‐cutting, where species established on exposed bare ground. Less severe disturbances by burning and cutting also caused a slight increase in the number of vascular plant species. For bryophytes and lichens, the highest increase in the number of species was also found in the sod‐cut plots, where all cryptogams were removed by the disturbance. At the scale of 3 m × 3 m, species richness of both vascular plants and cryptogams peaked in 1995–1996, i.e. 3–4 yrs after the disturbance, and slowly decreased or slightly fluctuated without any trend thereafter. At smaller scales it either peaked later or constantly increased over the entire observation period of 9 yrs. Species mobility, expressed as species accumulation over time, was lower than reported from grasslands. Rates of species turnover, calculated as Jaccard dissimilarity between pairs of consecutive years, corresponded across different scales. This implies that successional dry heathlands have a higher small‐scale mobility than heathlands which are apparently stable at larger scale.  相似文献

Plant viruses modify the development of their aphid vectors by inducing physiological changes in the shared host plant. The performance of hymenopterous parasitoids exploiting these aphids can also be modified by the presence of the plant pathogen. We used laboratory and glasshouse microcosms containing beans (Vicia faba) as the host plant to examine the interactions between a plant virus (pea enation mosaic virus; PEMV) and a hymenopterous parasitoid (Aphidius ervi) that share the aphid vector/host Acyrthosiphon pisum. Neither PEMV-infection of V. faba, nor the carriage of PEMV virions by A. pisum, affected the growth or morphology of the aphid, or the oviposition behaviour and development of A. ervi. The presence of developing Aphidius ervi larvae within Acyrthosiphon pisum did not affect the ability of the aphids to transmit PEMV. However, by reducing their longevity, parasitism ultimately decreased the time viruliferous aphids were able to inoculate plants. In terms of virus dispersal, parasitized aphids exhibited more movement around experimental arenas than unparasitized controls, causing a slight increase in the proportion of beans infected with PEMV. Exposure to adult Aphidius ervi caused Acyrthosiphon pisum to rapidly drop off bean plants and disperse to new hosts, resulting in considerably higher plant infection rates (70%) than that seen in control arenas (25%). The results of this investigation demonstrate that when parasitoids are added to a plant-pathogen-vector system, benefits to the host plant due to reduced herbivore infestation must be balanced against the consequences of parasitoid-induced aphid dispersal and a subsequent increase in the level of plant infection.  相似文献

The aim of present study was to determine the changes of some biochemical and physiological processes, which occurred in seeds and seedlings of white lupine and faba bean after pre-sowing treatment with laser beams. It was found this treatment of seeds considerably increased the activity of amylolytic enzymes in seeds of both plants. The greatest differentiation of the enzymatic activity was noticed after 120?h from the time of sowing but the activity of these enzymes in the seeds of both tested plants was similar and it had the same course in time. The irradiated seeds of white lupine and faba bean had higher fresh weight at the time of imbibition than the seeds which were not treated with laser beams. It resulted in earlier and more uniform germination. The concentration of free radicals increased considerably in the seeds pre-treated with laser beams and the largest increase in seeds of both plant species was noticed after five exposures to laser beams. Treating seeds with laser beams considerably increased the amount of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in the germinating seeds. Three exposures of seeds caused the largest increase of this plant hormone content in the seeds. The activity of IAA in faba bean was slightly higher than in white lupine seeds. Pre-sowing stimulation with laser had a positive influence on the growth and development of seedlings, which had longer hypocotyl and roots in comparison to seedlings which grew from non irradiated seeds.  相似文献

Different organic materials colonized by the fungus were applied, as an energy-rich inoculum, on faba bean plants cv. Polycarpe in growth chamber experiments. The organic materials used were colonized pieces of celery stems, faba bean petioles, and carrot root, blocks of cultures on potato dextrose agar and pieces of sclerotia. The inoculum was left attached to the plant stems for 48 h. After removal of the inoculum the plants were scored for disease incidence and severity. It was found that colonized pieces of carrot root produced the most uniform disease incidence and severity.  相似文献

The investigation was performed to evaluate the influence of the static magnetic field on oxidative stress in Vicia faba cultivated in soil from high background natural radioactivity in Iran. Soil samples were collected from Ramsar, Iran where the annual radiation absorbed dose from background radiation is substantially higher than 20 mSv/year. The soil samples were then divided into 2 separate groups including high and low natural radioactivity. The plants were continuously exposed to static magnetic field of 15 mT for 8 days, each 8h/day. The results showed that in the plants cultivated in soils with high background natural radioactivity and low background natural radioactivity the activity of antioxidant enzymes as well as flavonoid content were lower than those of the control. Treatment of plants with static magnetic field showed similar results in terms of lowering of antioxidant defense system and increase of peroxidation of membrane lipids. Accumulation of ROS also resulted in chromosomal aberration and DNA damage. This phenomenon was more pronounced when a combination of natural radiation and treatment with static magnetic field was applied. The results suggest that exposure to static magnetic field causes accumulation of reactive oxygen species in V. faba and natural radioactivity of soil exaggerates oxidative stress.  相似文献

Vicia faba L. (faba bean) is an important legume and is cultivated essentially as a cool-season crop. Changes in sowing dates and lack of precipitation expose faba bean crop to drought and heat stresses. The gradual rise in global temperatures owing to climate change is likely to exacerbate the detrimental effects of hot and dry climatic conditions on faba bean cultivation. High temperature stress is particularly damaging to faba bean during the flowering period, when the viability of pollen is critical for successful reproduction. Recent studies have shown that maintenance of protein homeostasis through synthesis of heat shock proteins plays a key role in the heat response of plants. To date, there has been no significant work linking the heat response of faba bean to the repertoire of its heat shock proteins. While quantitative trait loci have been identified for resistance against biotic stresses in faba bean, there is no parallel success with abiotic stresses in this species. Programs aiming at genetic improvement of the heat/drought resistance of this crop by both conventional breeding and molecular breeding methods are hampered because of the large and majorly ill-analyzed genome of faba bean plants. Likewise, molecular and biotechnology-related tools are poorly developed for faba bean; as a result, the fruits of transgenic research developed with model plant species are not reaching this crop. While specifically discussing the prospects for the genetic improvement of faba bean against heat and drought stresses, we highlight the areas of research which need to be strengthened on faba bean.  相似文献

Herbivore-damaged plants emit volatile organic compounds that attract natural enemies of the herbivores. This form of indirect plant defence occurs aboveground as well as belowground, but it remains unclear how simultaneous feeding by different herbivores attacking leaves and roots may affect the production of the respective defence signals. We employed a setup that combines trapping of volatile organic signals and simultaneous measurements of the attractiveness of these signals to above and belowground natural enemies. Young maize plants were infested with either the foliar herbivore Spodoptera littoralis , the root herbivore Diabrotica virgifera virgifera , or with both these important pest insects. The parasitic wasp Cotesia marginiventris and the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis megidis were strongly attracted if their respective host was feeding on a plant, but this attraction was significantly reduced if both herbivores were on a plant. The emission of the principal root attractant was indeed reduced due to double infestation, but this was not evident for the leaf volatiles. The parasitoid showed an ability to learn the differences in odour emissions and increased its response to the odour of a doubly infested plant after experiencing this odour during an encounter with hosts. This first study to measure effects of belowground herbivory on aboveground tritrophic signalling and vice-versa reemphasizes the important role of plants in bridging interactions between spatially distinct components of the ecosystem.  相似文献

1. A simple device called a 'pocometer' (POlar COordinate METER) was developed to measure three-dimensional structure of plants. It consists of a tape-measure to measure distance and two protractors to measure zenith angle and azimuth angle.
2. The pocometer can determine locations of points within a few metres distance with a resolution of less than 1cm. Location of any point on a plant can be measured in 10 to 30s depending on the ease of pulling the tape measure to the point of interest.
3. A system to use data obtained with the pocometer to calculate plant light capture was developed. The degree of shading at any point on a plant is estimated by checking obstruction by other plant parts of the view toward the sky at that point.
4. Photon flux density (PFD) on leaf surfaces was estimated for Aucuba japonica , a broad-leaved evergreen shrub, using the above system. The estimated PFDs for individual leaves of a plant corresponded to the sensor-measured PFDs with correlation coefficients of 0·67 to 0·92.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)/faba bean (Vicia faba L.) intercropping shows significant overyielding and high nitrogen (N)-use efficiency, but the dynamics of plant interactions have rarely been estimated. The objective of the present study was to investigate the temporal dynamics of competitive N acquisition between intercropped wheat and faba bean with the logistic model. Wheat and faba bean were grown together or alone with limited N supply in pots. Data of shoot and root biomass and N content measured from 14 samplings were fitted to logistic models to determine instantaneous rates of growth and N uptake. The superiority of instantaneous biomass production and N uptake shifted from faba bean to wheat with their growth. Moreover, the shift of superiority on N uptake occurred 7–12 days earlier than that of biomass production. Interspecific competition stimulated intercropped wheat to have a much earlier and stronger superiority on instantaneous N uptake compared with isolated wheat. The modeling methodology characterized the temporal dynamics of biomass production and N uptake of intercropped wheat and faba bean in different planting systems, which helps to understand the underlying process of plant interaction for intercropping plants.  相似文献
