We observed 36 captive great apes [31 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes),2 bonobos (Pan paniscus), and3 orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus)]reaching for items of food and engaging in other spontaneous behaviors. We consider circumstantial factors that could influence the preferred choice of one hand or the other. Most of the subjects (81%) showed a significant hand preference in food reaching that is consistent in directionality with the hand preferences that they showed during other spontaneous behaviors. The results show that the postural adjustment required when carrying out an action seems to influence directly the expression of manual laterality in individuals. Moreover, the results indicate the possible existence of a relationship between maturational factors and persistence in directionality of hand preferences.  相似文献

In a group of 44 cats overtrained on a task where they had to reach for a moving target, paw performance and paw preference were investigated. More than half of the cats (n = 23) were strongly lateralized in that they used one of their paws to perform more than 90% of the reaching attempts. Among these lateralized cats, left-pawed ones (n = 17) significantly exceeded right pawed-animals (n = 6). Investigating both the accuracy and speed scores, the comparison between lateralized and non-lateralized cats (using a criterion of 90% lateralization) showed that although the accuracy scores did not differ, lateralized cats were significantly quicker to trigger their movement. No difference was found concerning the movement time. For the whole group of 44 cats the comparison between the performance levels obtained with their two forepaws showed that the more frequently used paw was significantly more accurate and faster to trigger and to execute the movement than the less used paw. This study shows that, in pointing towards a moving target, cats display an asymmetry in paw preference that is associated with a performance asymmetry.  相似文献

When exposed to novel food during food transitions, growing pigs often elicit a neophobic response that is responsible for decreased food consumption. Flavour preference conditioning may represent an interesting way to reduce neophobia and improve food intake in growing pigs. The present series of experiments investigated the pig's conditioned preference for a flavoured beverage added with different carbohydrates and sweeteners and the possible transition of those beverage-induced preferences to flavoured solid food. In Experiment 1A, nine juvenile pigs were given three two-day conditioning sessions: they received a flavoured beverage added with 1.125% sucrose (F + S1.125) and a second flavoured beverage with no additive (F−). In Experiment 1B, nine juvenile pigs were given six two-day conditioning sessions: they received a flavoured beverage added with 10% sucrose (F + S10) and a second flavoured beverage with no additive (F−). In subsequent two-choice drinking tests, the pigs exhibited no clear-cut preference for F + S1.125, whereas F + S10 was preferred compared to F− (P < 0.05) but only during the first subsequent two-choice drinking tests, suggesting that pigs developed a short-term preference for the flavour previously paired with 10% but not 1.125% sucrose. The Experiment 2 was conducted to assess the independent effects of visceral (caloric intake) and gustative (sweet taste) reinforcement in flavour preference conditioning. Nine juvenile pigs were subjected to four three-day conditioning sessions: they received flavoured beverages added with 2.25% maltodextrin (F + m, caloric intake), 0.37% saccharin (F + s, sweet taste), or no additive (F−). During further two-choice drinking tests, no clear-cut preference emerged, but the consumption of F + m was 107% and 35% higher than that of F− and F + s, respectively. Despite pigs exhibited some conditioned flavour preferences during two-choice drinking tests in Experiments 1B and 2, no clear-cut preference was observed during two-choice feeding tests with flavoured solid food. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of the combination and/or synergy between gustative and visceral reinforcements for conditioned flavour preference and suggest that a visceral reinforcement via maltodextrin might be sufficient to condition such a preference. Moreover, the absence of clear-cut preference during two-choice feeding test illustrates the difficulty to transpose a flavour preference acquired via a sweet beverage to solid food. Further studies are needed to investigate the failure of saccharin-conditioned preference in pigs.  相似文献

The food preferences of 64 cats, of which 28 were domestic pets and 36 were free-ranging animals on three farms, were tested using five food types; a sixth type was also tested on the farm cats. Information was also gathered on the background diet of the house cats (individually) and of each farm cat colony. Consistent differences were found between the predefined groups of cats in their preferences for three foods, Hard Dry (HD), Canned Meat (CM) and Raw Beef (RB), the greatest differences being between house cats and farm cats as a whole. The three colonies of farm cats showed distinct differences in preference, for RB and/or CM, and for the sixth food, Soft Dry (SD). Differences between farms could be explained by a reduced preference for items similar to major components of the background diet of each colony, i.e. selection in favour of foods that were temporally rare. Differences between house and farm cats, and within the house cats, could not be explained in this way; the house cats were neophobic towards RB, and the farm cats ate little of the HD food, possibly because they found it difficult to ingest.  相似文献

Paw use on three tasks in 53 domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) was studied to determine whether the animals exhibited a significant paw preference, and, if so, to explore the direction and strength of the dogs' preferred paw use, both within, and between, tasks. The influence of the dogs' sex on their paw preferences was also explored. The findings revealed that lateralised behaviour was strongly sex related. Male and female showed paw preferences at the level of the population but in opposite directions. Female dogs had a greater preference for using their right paw on all tasks, whilst males were more inclined to adopt their left paw. Analysis revealed significant positive relationships for two of a possible three intertask correlations. Overall, the findings suggest that there are two distinct populations of paw preference in the domestic dog that cluster around the animals' sex. It is recommended that further work be conducted to explore the influence of pre-training on dogs' paw preferences before generalisations regarding laterality in this species are drawn.  相似文献

There is considerable interest in the role that ultraviolet (UV) cues play in the foraging and mate choice decisions of birds. However, with the exception of the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata, it is not yet clear whether ultraviolet preferences are context specific, or whether birds show a general preference for full-avian-spectrum environments (320-700 nm) irrespective of the activity in which they are engaged. We investigated whether European starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, and blue tits, Parus caeruleus, show general (nonresource based) or context-specific preferences for full-spectrum environments. We found that neither species showed a general preference for UV-present (UV+) over UV-deficient (UV−) environments, when those environments contained no resources (experiment 1). Furthermore, neither species showed a UV+ preference when cages contained food, water and perches (starlings; experiment 2) or food, perches and heterospecifics (blue tits; Hunt et al. 1999. Animal Behaviour, 58, 809-815). However, both species did show highly significant preferences for UV+ conditions when viewing potential mates. Such experiments are necessary before one can conclude that particular wavebands have specific relevance to mate choice. In fact, our results suggest that the importance of particular wavelength compositions do indeed vary with behavioural context.  相似文献

The European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) is an endangered felid impacted by genetic introgression with the domestic cat (Felis silvestris catus). The problem of hybridization has had different effects in different areas. In non-Mediterranean regions pure forms of wildcats became almost extinct, while in Mediterranean regions genetic introgression is a rare phenomenon. The study of the potential factors that prevent the gene flow in areas of lower hybridization may be key to wildcat conservation. We studied the population size and spatial segregation of wildcats and domestic cats in a typical Mediterranean area of ancient sympatry, where no evidence of hybridization had been detected by genetic studies. Camera trapping of wild-living cats and walking surveys of stray cats in villages were used for capture–recapture estimations of abundance and spatial segregation. Results showed (i) a low density of wildcats and no apparent presence of putative hybrids; (ii) a very low abundance of feral cats in spite of the widespread and large population sources of domestic cats inhabiting villages; (iii) strong spatial segregation between wildcats and domestic/feral cats; and (iv) no relationship between the size of the potential population sources and the abundance of feral cats. Hence, domestic cats were limited in their ability to become integrated into the local habitat of wildcats. Ecological barriers (habitat preferences, food limitations, intra-specific and intra-guild competition, predation) may explain the severe divergences of hybridization impact observed at a biogeographic level. This has a direct effect on key conservation strategies for wildcats (i.e., control of domestic cats).  相似文献

We examined hand preferences in 25 tufted capuchins (Cebus apella) in three tasks. The hole task involved a single action of reaching for food in a hole. The horizontal panel and the vertical panel tasks required the alignment of two apertures, by moving or lifting a panel, to reach for food in a hole. We found a significant group-level right-hand preference for reaching actions in the hole and in the horizontal panel tasks, but not in the vertical panel task, in which the food retrieval implied the complementary use of both hands. No significant hand bias emerged for moving or lifting actions with high visuospatial components. There is a stronger hand preference in more complex manual activity—coordinated bimanual hand use for food retrieval—than in other unimanual measures. We discuss the results in the context of previous reports on primate laterality.  相似文献

We tested the hand preferences of 20 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) for a haptic task requiring individuals to search for grapes in an opaque bucket filled with water. We compared these data to the hand preferences displayed by the same chimpanzees during reaching and bimanual feeding tasks. The chimpanzees displayed no significant hand preference for the reaching or bimanual feeding tasks, but exhibited a right-hand preference while performing the haptic task. In contrast, New and Old World monkeys display left-hand preferences for similar tasks. We discuss the relevance of these findings for the evolution of handedness in primates.  相似文献

Preferences for common food types (‘apostatic selection’) have been demonstrated in a wide variety of vertebrate predators, yet there are few examples of preferences for rare food types (‘anti-apostatic selection’). Anti-apostatic selection is predicted to occur when, among other things, there are nutritional benefits to be gained from the consumption of a mixed diet. We tested this hypothesis by examining the frequency-dependent food preferences of domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) with different nutritional histories. Subjects were classified as being either nutritionally ‘experienced’ (farm and rescue shelter cats, with a history of scavenging for nutritionally variable foods) or nutritionally ‘inexperienced’ (cats reared indoors on high-quality, nutritionally complete diets). We tested for frequency dependence by allowing individuals and groups of cats from the two groups to select from high-density mixtures of two types of artificial food pellet. In experiments on individual cats, nutritionally experienced subjects showed significant anti-apostatic selection, whereas inexperienced cats produced only a weak anti-apostatic trend. In experiments on groups of cats, both inexperienced and experienced groups showed significant anti-apostatic selection. The apparent inconsistency between individual and group results could be explained in terms of the additional anti-apostatic effects that result from variation among individuals in group foraging situations (i.e. when the effects of individuals are pooled). Because other behavioural explanations, such as perceptual contrast and sampling effects, were unlikely to have influenced our results, we conclude that the differences in selection between experienced and inexperienced individuals were probably due to the differing extent to which the consumption of a mixed diet was beneficial. These experiments may offer some insight into the success of the domestic cat in urban areas: although obligate carnivores, they appear to possess flexible feeding strategies which will tend to allow them to select a reasonably balanced diet from nutritionally variable resources in, for example, refuse bins.  相似文献

It has been argued that social learning helps animals either avoid noxious substances or identify food items, but evidence suggests that avian social learning is fundamentally different from that of mammals. In two experiments, we investigated whether the preferences of domestic hens, Gallus g. domesticus, for novel food were influenced by observing the feeding behaviour of conspecifics. In experiment 1, we attempted to confirm that birds can develop socially learnt aversions to unpalatable foods. Despite demonstrators showing a highly visible ‘disgust reaction’ after eating unpalatable coloured food, observers did not develop aversions to similarly coloured food. In experiment 2, we aimed to determine whether preferences for palatable food were socially learnt, and whether the extent of a demonstrator's preference for novel food affected the magnitude of the observer's socially learned preference. Demonstrators ate coloured food of standard or high palatability, or did not peck food at all. When the demonstrators pecked more frequently or fed more quickly from the food, the observers consumed a greater proportion of food of the same colour; however, this was only when the food was red, not green. We argue this indicates an unlearned aversion to red food, overcome by social learning of the food being highly palatable. The results provide no evidence that adult hens learn aversions through observing disgust reactions, but show that hens are sensitive to the extent of demonstrator preferences for palatable food. The color preferences of the green-veined white butterfly Pieris napi (Linnaeus, 1758) that are associated with its foraging behavior were studied in experiments with artificial flower models. It was found that newly emerged inexperienced butterflies that are searching for food prefer flower models that are blue or red and select yellow ones at a considerably lower rate. With repeated visits on artificial flowers, P. napi individuals display are highly consistent in their preference for the first chosen color. Fruit preferences of cedar waxwings, Bombycilla cedrorum, in the laboratory were compared with preferences in the field to identify fruit characteristics that influence choice by avian dispersers. Waxwings ate 12 of 13 species of fruits offered individually in laboratory tests, but in the field ate only eight of the same 13 species. When given a choice of 10 fruit species offered simultaneously, waxwings showed a strong preference for fruits that were small or red. Preferences for fruit species in the laboratory were not correlated with morphological or nutritional characteristics of the fruits. When offered food that differed only in colour, waxwings initially preferred red over blue, yellow and green. In later tests, preference for red fruit was less marked. In tests for size preference, waxwings preferred small pieces of fruit (6 mm) over medium pieces (9 mm), and medium pieces over those that were large (12 mm). Sizes of fruits preferred in the field and in the laboratory tests were approximately 6·0–7·5 mm. Thus, waxwings can discern differences in food items and they have definite preferences. The lack of complete agreement between preferences for fruits in the field and in the laboratory suggests that factors important in the field but controlled in the laboratory (e.g. abundance, location) override preferences for certain fruits. However, some fruit characteristics, particularly size, were consistently influential in the laboratory and in the field.  相似文献

Adult Wistar rats were trained to get food from a narrow tube under conditions of free choice of a limb. After reaching a stable level of using the preferred limb, rats (n = 35) were forced to relearn the acquired skill for reaching food with a unpreferred paw. When afterwards the rats returned to the initial conditions of free choice of a limb, 12 animals (34%) did not recover their initial preference, 8 rats (23%) were ambidextrous, and 15 animals (43%) returned to the originally preferred paw. The results demonstrated different resistance of the initial limb preference to forced retraining in different animals. It is suggested that the process of retraining per se is not the only and sufficient condition of the change in "handedness". It also suggested that the different resistance of initial preference to forced retraining reflects individual differences in a degree (intensity) of this preference, which are predetermined by internal, probably by genetic factors.  相似文献

Early experiences are of potential importance in shaping long-term behavior. This study examined the relative influence of prenatal and/or early postnatal experience of chemosensory stimuli on subsequent olfactory and dietary preferences of cats as newborns, at 9-10 weeks, and at 6 months. Cats were exposed to vanillin or 4-ethylguaiacol via their mother's diet either prenatally, postnatally, perinatally (prenatal and postnatal), or experienced no exposure to the stimuli (control). Newborns were given a two-choice olfactory test between the familiar "odor" and no odor; 9-10 week olds were tested for their preference between two food treats, one flavored with the familiar stimulus and the other unflavored; at 6 months, cats were given a choice of two bowls of food, one flavored with the familiar stimulus and the other unflavored. At all ages, cats preferred the familiar, and avoided the unfamiliar, stimulus. Perinatal exposure exerted the strongest influence on preference. Prenatal exposure influenced preference at all ages and postnatal exposure exerted a stronger effect as the cat aged. We conclude that long-term chemosensory and dietary preferences of cats are influenced by prenatal and early (nursing) postnatal experience, supporting a natural and biologically relevant mechanism for the safe transmission of diet from mother to young.  相似文献

Studies on the genetic diversity and relatedness of zoo populations are crucial for implementing successful breeding programmes. The European wildcat, Felis s. silvestris, is subject to intensive conservation measures, including captive breeding and reintroduction. We here present the first systematic genetic analysis of the captive population of Felis s. silvestris in comparison with a natural wild population. We used microsatellites and mtDNA sequencing to assess genetic diversity, structure and integrity of the ex situ population. Our results show that the ex situ population of the European wildcat is highly structured and that it has a higher genetic diversity than the studied wild population. Some genetic clusters matched the breeding lines of certain zoos or groups of zoos that often exchanged individuals. Two mitochondrial haplotype groups were detected in the in situ populations, one of which was closely related to the most common haplotype found in domestic cats, suggesting past introgression in the wild. Although native haplotypes were also found in the captive population, the majority (68%) of captive individuals shared a common mtDNA haplotype with the domestic cat (Felis s. catus). Only six captive individuals (7.7%) were assigned as wildcats in the STRUCTURE analysis (at K = 2), two of which had domestic cat mtDNA haplotypes and only two captive individuals were assigned as purebred wildcats by NewHybrids. These results suggest that the high genetic diversity of the captive population has been caused by admixture with domestic cats. Therefore, the captive population cannot be recommended for further breeding and reintroduction.  相似文献

The minimalistic environment of standard laboratory cages can adversely influence the responses of animals in standard behavioural tests and other aspects of the animals' biology. To avoid this, cages should provide for the animals' species-specific behavioural characteristics. We hypothesized that, given their possible capacity for colour vision, laboratory mice, Mus musculus, would show preferences between cages of different colours. Studies show that environmental colour can influence emotionality and task performance in humans, suggesting that cage colour could also affect emotionality and performance of mice in behavioural tests. Seventy-two mice were housed in home cages painted red, black, green or white. Five weeks later, 24 mice were placed individually into an apparatus allowing them to choose between cages of each of the home cage colours. Each mouse showed a highly significant preference, which overall, was unrelated to home cage colour. White cages were most preferred and red were least. Home cage colour had a significant effect on body weight and food consumption as well as on behaviour in a raised plus maze. Mice from red home cages spent most time in the closed arms, indicating greater anxiety, possibly suggesting that the reduced occupancy of the red preference cages resulted from avoidance of environmental conditions that induced a negative mental state. These findings show that laboratory mice have strong preferences between cages of different colours. We also found that an apparently inconsequential environmental variable, home cage colour, can influence responses in standard behavioural tests, which should be considered in assessing the external validity of such tests. Using three tests, studies have been made on locomotor lateralization in Wistar rats. It was shown that rat prefer the left paw for obtaining food from a tube, this preference being more pronounced in females. Females are more asymmetric also in preference of a side turn in a labyrinth: they choose the right side. In males, the preference of the right and left turns, as well as the absence of locomotor asymmetry were almost equal. These data are rather similar to those obtained for human subjects. Studies on the direction of rotation of rats after apomorphine injections did not reveal any sex differences or populational preferences.  相似文献

Animals often express behavioral preferences for different types of food or other resources, and these preferences can evolve or shift following association with novel food types. Shifts in preference can involve at least two phenomena: a change in rank preference or a change in specificity. The former corresponds to a change in the order in which hosts are preferred, while a shift in specificity can be an increase in the tendency to utilize multiple hosts. These possibilities have been examined in relatively few systems that include extensive population-level replication. The Melissa blue butterfly, Lycaeides melissa, has colonized exotic alfalfa, Medicago sativa, throughout western North America. We assayed the host preferences of 229 females from ten populations associated with novel and native hosts. In four out of five native-associated populations, a native host was preferred over the exotic host, while preference for a native host characterized only two out of five of the alfalfa-associated populations. Across all individuals from alfalfa-associated populations, there appears to have been a decrease in specificity: females from these populations lay fewer eggs on the native host and more eggs on the exotic relative to females from native-host populations. However, females from alfalfa-associated populations did not lay more eggs on a third plant species, which suggests that preferences for specific hosts in this system can potentially be gained and lost independently. Geographic variation in oviposition preference in L. melissa highlights the value of surveying a large number of populations when studying the evolution of a complex behavioral trait.  相似文献

Paw preferences in domestic dogs were studied using three different behavioural tests, recording frequency, duration and latency of paw use. No overall population tendency to right- or left-paw preference was seen on any of the tests, nor could a sub-population of handed dogs be detected. This failure to replicate previous reports that male dogs tend to use their left paws while females use their right was counterbalanced by a significant tendency for male dogs to use their left paw when initially presented with one test, and for the latency of left paw use to be significantly shorter than that for right paw use on these initial presentations. This significant effect disappeared with repeated presentation of the test, and was not present in females. We conclude that behavioural lateralisation appears to be a labile category in dogs, and may be related to brain hemispheric effects in responding to novel stimuli.  相似文献
