This paper describes the skeletal maturity status of Japanese children in Western Kyushu and its variation within Japanese populations. Hand-wrist skeletal maturity was assessed by the Tanner-Whitehouse (1975) (TW2) method from radiographs of 500 boys and 485 girls aged from 4 to 15 years. Western Kyushu children showed retarded skeletal maturity scores (RUS, carpals, and 20-bone) under the age of 12 years for boys and 10 years for girls, and thereafter they were advanced in relation to the British standard. Within Japanese populations the present sample showed delayed maturity compared to Tokyo children, but was close to that of Sapporo children throughout the age range studied. However, the expected effect of secular trend suggested skeletal maturity more advanced for Tokyo children and somewhat advanced one for Sapporo children compared to that of Western Kyushu children. 相似文献

Lengths of the second metacarpal and fourth middle phalanx of a sample of 99 sets of radiographs of twins (45 MZ sets and 54 like-sex DZ sets) are subjected to variance analysis. The purpose is to examine incremental growth status between the appearance of these bones and the fusion of their epiphyses. Grouped data show higher F-ratios and H scores for males in MC2 length and for females in MP4 length. When the data are sub-divided by age (10 and under, older than 10), the later ages show uniformly higher F and H scores than the younger, and males higher than females for all measurements. It is suggested that the influence of the environment is relatively less in later ages, and that X-chromosomal influence plays a part in determining tubular bone growth in the hand-wrist. 相似文献

Hand-wrist radiographs from 326 Guamanian children (180 boys and 146 girls) were evaluated for total width, medullary width, length, and combined cortical thickness of the second metacarpal. Bone measurements as well as standing height and weight were compared to similar published data from U.S. mainland black, white, and Mexican-American children. The results demonstrated that the second metacarpal bones of Guamanian boys and girls of all age groups (5–17 years) have a narrower width and shorter length with less combined cortical thickness than any of the other groups. Guamanian children also weighed less and were of shorter stature than their black, white, or Mexican-American counterparts. These results agree closely with those comparisons between Guamanian and U.S. mainland white adults published earlier. It is not possible from the present data to ascertain whether these differences were due to genetic variability or nutritional deficiency. 相似文献

Skeletal maturity was assessed from hand-wrist radiographs in a sample of 3,817 Danish schoolchildren aged 7 to 18 years using the new version of the bone-specific Tanner-Whitehouse scoring system, the TW2 method. In most of the age groups in both sexes the distributions of the bone maturity scores displayed marked departures from normality; percentiles for the scores were therefore counted from the raw data. On the average, over the total age range, the differences between the age equivalents (bone ages) for the fiftieth percentile and chronological age were close to zero in both sexes, indicating good agreement with the British standards. However, in the individual age groups, and in particular at adolescence, characteristic divergences from the standards occurred, apparently reflecting the developmental spurt. 相似文献

Three Arctic charr strains and their crosses were evaluated with respect to growth and sexual maturation frequency. No significant heterosis was observed for growth. One out of five crosses was heavier, but not significantly so, than the best performing parental strain at ages 1 + and 2. The five other crosses did not perform better than the best performing parental strain at any age. Cross-breeding was not recommended as an effective method to improve growth performance in Arctic charr. Growth performance of reciprocal crosses differed significantly in all strain combinations: crosses resembled more the male parent strain than the female parent strain. ANOVA for male maturation frequency showed a highly significant effect of the male parent strain and a weakly significant effect of female parent strain. In the Ottsjö strain mature males were significantly larger than immature fish and females. Such size difference was also observed in the offspring when sires of the Ottsjö strain were crossed with dams of the faster growing Honavan strain or with dams of the Rensjö strain. When Ottsjö dams were crossed to sires of the other strains no significant size difference between mature males and other fish was found. 相似文献

Repeated measures of periosteal and endosteal widths of the left second metacarpal from two samples of radiographs were made independently with either a dial caliper or an electronic digitizer connected to a microcomputer. In addition, periosteal and endosteal bone widths of a common sample of radiographs were measured with dial calipers and the electronic digitizer. Dial calipers and an electronic digitizer are both very reliable, but intraobserver errors produced with the use of the digitizer are significantly less than those produced with the use of dial calipers. However, measurements made with the electronic digitizer are systematically larger than corresponding widths measured with dial calipers, but this difference is very small. 相似文献

Logistic regression analyses showed that the maturity v. length relationship for female English sole Pleuronectes vetulus varied significantly among sampling locations from California to British Columbia in June–September. Stepwise analyses found that latitude, bottom gradient, bottom temperature and sediment type were all significant factors. Regression analyses of age at length from subsamples indicated that latitude, maturity and bottom sediment had significant effects on growth. Data from the aged subsamples showed significant differences among age classes in the length v. maturity relationship with older fish attaining maturity at smaller sizes than younger fish. On a coast wide basis the length and age at 50% maturity were c. 230 mm and 4·7 years respectively. Growth rate and length at 50% maturity have decreased substantially relative to observations from the 1950s, but age at 50% maturity has increased. 相似文献

Age,growth and maturity for two highly targeted jack species: Caranx ignobilis and Caranx melampygus
This study provides growth rate, longevity and maturity estimates for the two important species of jack in Hawaiʻi: ulua aukea/giant trevally Caranx ignobilis and omilu/bluefin trevally Caranx melampygus. Maximum observed ages for C. ignobilis and C. melampygus were 31 years and 24 years, respectively. Combined sex von Bertalanffy growth parameter values for C. ignobilis and C. melampygus were as follows: L∞ = 1064 mm and K = 0.18 year−1; and L∞ = 718 mm and K = 0.20 year−1, respectively. Female size at maturity was significantly greater than males for both C. ignobilis and C. melampygus. Size and age at maturity for C. ignobilis was 594 mm and 4.4 years for females and 465 mm and 2.8 years for males. Size and age at maturity for C. melampygus was 372 mm and 4.1 years for females and 329 mm and 2.9 years for males. This study provides the first robust demographic data for both of these highly prized and ecologically important predatory species in Hawaiʻi, which can be used for future assessments or management. 相似文献

Long bone growth is analyzed for 180 children from a Medieval population at Kulubnarti in Sudanese Nubia (550–1450 A.D.). A regional interpopulation comparison is made with growth data from Wadi Halfa in Lower Nubia, and an intrapopulation analysis is undertaken to assess diachronic changes in growth at Kulubnarti. Changes in growth patterns are interpreted in the context of mortality and morbidity profiles and relationships between the three variables are discussed. It is suggested that changes in the sociopolitical environment may have been responsible in part for altering levels of biological stress and impacting growth. 相似文献

Long-term changes in growth and age at maturity of mackerel, Scomber scombrus L., from the North Sea
A.-L. Agnalt 《Journal of fish biology》1989,35(SA):305-311
Mean length and mean weight at age of Atlantic mackerel in the North Sea increased significantly between 1960 and 1979, then, decreased markedly during the 1980s. In contrast, median age at maturity decreased (c. 1-1.5 years) from 1960. Median length at maturity remained stable until the 1980s, when it declined sharply. The significance of these changes is discussed in relation to variation in sea temperature, food availability and stock size. It is speculated that the changes during the 1980s resulted from immigration of western stock mackerel. 相似文献

The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis plays a key role in skeletal development, acquisition of peak bone mass and regulation of adult bone turnover. Euthyroid status is essential for maintenance of optimal bone mineralization and strength. In population studies, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism have both been associated with an increased risk of fracture. Furthermore, recent studies in healthy euthyroid post-menopausal women indicate that thyroid status in the upper normal range is also associated with low bone mineral density and an increased risk of non-vertebral fracture. Studies in mutant mice have demonstrated that thyroid hormone receptor α is the major mediator of T3 action in bone and that thyroid hormones exert anabolic actions during growth but have catabolic effects on the adult skeleton. Nevertheless, TSH has also been proposed to be a direct negative regulator of bone turnover, although the relative importance of T3 and TSH actions in the skeleton has yet to be clarified. 相似文献

The age and growth parameters of Dipturus chilensis were estimated by counting growth rings from thin sections of vertebral centra from 400 fish (246 females and 154 males), ranging from 23 to 124 cm total length (LT), and backcalculating fish lengths at previous ages. Marginal increment analysis lent support to the hypothesis of annual deposition of band‐pairs, which formed during the winter months. The oldest female D. chilensis aged in this study was 21 years and 117 cm LT, whereas the oldest male was 18 years and 93 cm LT. A 4·7% index of average per cent error (IAPE) suggested that this is a precise method for calculating the age of D. chilensis. Observed LT were lower than backcalculated LT, which implies the influence of Lee's phenomenon. The von Bertalanffy growth equations, based on mean length‐at‐age data, were estimated as Lt = 128·3 (1 ? e?0·112 (t + 0·514)) for females and Lt = 107·8 (1 ? e?0·134 (t + 0·862)) for males where t is age (years). Growth was significantly different between sexes: females reached a larger adult size. Ages and lengths at 50% maturity were estimated at 14 years of age and 106 cm LT for females and 11 years of age and 86 cm LT for males. At c. 14 years, there was a decline in growth rates in females. The factor most likely responsible for this was sexual maturity, which caused a discontinuity in growth of female fish. These results show that this species is slow‐growing, long‐lived, relatively large and of delayed maturity, characteristics that make it vulnerable to exploitation. 相似文献

Identifying environmental risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders is challenging due to the number of potential confounders. Twins are of particular interest for researchers interested in studying these types of problems due to their inherent control for the influence of genetic factors. In twin studies, this population can allow environmental risk factors to be more easily identified, and this type of study design may allow the role of biomechanics in injury and disease to be further explored. At present, it is unclear if foot function displays more similarity between certain types of twins. In this study, we hypothesized that the plantar pressures of monozygotic (identical) twins would be more similar between pairs than dizygotic (non-identical) twins. We measured static and dynamic plantar pressures from five pairs of each twin type. Statistical parametric modeling was used to compare pressure distributions at the sensor level. For >80% of stance phase, the pixel level analysis indicated that monozygotic twins had less variation in plantar pressure between pairs. The average z-statistic across the entire trial was 0.88 for the monozygotic group and 1.13 for the dizygotic group. In this study we provide evidence of greater similarity of plantar pressures in monozygotic twin pairs compared to dizygotic twins. This finding supports the use of co-twin studies investigating potentially modifiable environmental and biomechanical risk factors for musculoskeletal conditions that affect the foot and ankle. 相似文献

Leaf photosynthetic rates were measured on field-grown soybeans during the 1980 season. Comparisons were made between different cultivars and isolines representative of maturity groups I–IV. Mature, fully expanded leaves at different nodes on the plant were measured in high light to determine which had the highest potential photosynthetic rates at any one time. Successive leaves during the growing season had maximum rates which increased from about 22 mol CO2 m-2 s-1 on 25 June to a peak of 30–44 mol CO2 m-2 s-1 in early August. The persistency and eventual decline in the maximum rate was associated with the maturity group and related dates of flowering, pod fill and onset of senescence. Early maturing cultivars (groups I and II) had higher peak rates (38–44 mol CO2 m-2 s-1) than later maturing cultivars (30–35 mol CO2 m-2 s-1, groups III and IV). However, the photosynthetic rates of early maturing cultivars declined rapidly after attaining their peak, whereas the leaves of later maturing cultivars maintained their photosynthetic activity for much longer. 相似文献

The relative growth of two species of the genus Ocypode inhabiting different ecological niches was studied before and after sexual maturity. The growth coefficient of both sexes of O. cordimana, which inhabits supra-littoral zones, is higher than that of O. platytarsis found in wave-wash zones.s Some characteristics such as eyestalk length, major chela width and obdomen width do not show any difference in the growth pattern of either species of Ocypode at the onset of sexual maturity. Other characteristics such as minor and major chela length in male O. platytarsis; carapace length, minor chela length and width in female O. platytarsis; major chela length and third walking leg length in male O. cordimana showed a difference in the growth pattern after the onset of sexual maturity. Major chela length of males of both species is clearly a sexually dimorphic feature since it showed an increase in the growth coefficient after sexual maturity. Merus length in male O. platytarsis and minor chela length in female O. cordimana also showed such sexual dimorphism. There are several characteristics in which the growth coefficient declines after sexual maturity. The change in growth coefficient of different characteristics may depend on the adaptive value of the characteristic in reproductive or post-reproductive activities of O. cordimana and O. platytarsis. 相似文献

Influence of sexual maturity on feeding, growth and energy stores of wild Atlantic salmon parr 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
S. K. A. Arndt 《Journal of fish biology》2000,57(3):589-596
Maturing Salmo salar parr had significantly lower short-term energy stores (indicated by hepato-somatic index) in August, and significantly lower energy stores and growth rate (indicated by RNA : DNA) in September than immature parr captured from the same stream sites on the same date. There were no significant differences in gut fullness or protein concentrations, suggesting that up to early September the main energetic consequences of maturation were a reduction in allocations to growth and short-term energy storage, but not a mobilization of long-term stored energy in the form of proteins. These are the first observations of relative food intake and energy storage for maturing parr under natural conditions, and also the first to assess growth effects on wild fish before completion of the maturation process. 相似文献

The present study reports the age related changes in the peripheral testosterone levels, testicular and epididymal growth and development and cauda epididymal spermiogram in local pigs of Northeastern India, which attain sexual maturity around 3 months of age. Local boars (n = 20) were castrated at monthly intervals from 2 to 6 months of age (4 boars per month) to study the testicular growth and development and the epididymal spermiogram. Blood samples, collected from local boars (n = 6) at monthly intervals from 2 to 6 months of age, were analyzed for testosterone levels by radioimmunoassay. Compared to Hampshire boars, significantly (P < 0.05) high testosterone levels were observed in the local boars as early as 2 months of age. The mean (± SEM) level of testosterone in the local boars at 2, 3 and 4 months of age was 11.89 ± 1.52, 20.45 ± 1.33 and 20.38 ± 2.0 ngml−1, respectively. Though there was consistently significant (P < 0.05) difference in the body weight between Hampshire and local pigs, the same was not observed in case of testicular weight except at 3 and 6 months of age. In line with the above observation, the testis:body weight ratio (gram testis per kg body weight) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the local boars compared to the Hampshire boars at any time of observation, which ranged from 0.8 to 1.0 in case of Hampshire and from 2.3 to 3.0 in local boars. The sperm concentration in the cauda epididymal fluid of local boars at 2, 3 and 6 months of age was 2255 ± 186.6, 3685 ± 103.8 and 4325 ± 146.2 million/ml, respectively and the sperm motility, viability and total abnormality was 73.3, 75.2 and 6.2%, respectively at 3 months of age. Taken together, the testosterone level, testicular growth and development and epididymal spermiogram indicate the trait of early sexual maturity in the local pigs as compared to Hampshire. 相似文献

Changes in size and age at maturity in a population of kokanee Oncorhynchus nerka during a period of declining growth conditions 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
M. C. Grover† 《Journal of fish biology》2005,66(1):122-134
Trends in size distributions and age at maturity of spawning kokanee Oncorhynchus nerka during a 5 year period of declining growth conditions at Bucks Lake, California, U.S.A. were consistent with the hypothesis that reductions in growth rates in successive cohorts induce a shift to an older age at maturity. This forestalls decreases in size at maturity during a transitional period characterized by an increasing proportion of individuals that delay maturation. During the course of the study, kokanee first began declining in size at maturity, and then shifted from a 3 year to a 4 year egg to adult cycle. Individuals that spawned during their fourth year (age 3 years) were significantly larger, on average, than members of their cohort that spawned during their third year (age 2 years). This difference was greatest when age 2 year adults were smallest. The shift to an older age at maturity prevented a steady decline in size at maturity, even though age‐specific size was steadily declining over time. Size at maturity, however, began to decline again once the transition to a 4 year cycle was complete. In addition, there was a general trend of decreasing length‐specific mass. The data indicate that there is a range of growth trajectories over which delayed maturity can prevent a temporal pattern of decreasing size at maturity as growth rates decline. 相似文献

Many animal taxa exhibit a positive correlation between sexual size dimorphism and sex differences in age at maturity, such that members of the larger sex mature at older ages than members of the smaller sex. Previous workers have suggested that sexual bimaturation is a product of sex differences in growth trajectories, but to date no one has tested this hypothesis. The current study uses growth-based models to study relationships between sexual size dimorphism and sexual bimaturation in species with asymptotic growth after maturity. These models show that sex differences in asymptotic size would produce sexual bimaturation even if both sexes approach their respective asymptotic sizes at the same age, mature at the same proportion of asymptotic size and have otherwise equivalent growth and maturation patterns. Furthermore, our analyses show that there are three ways to reduce sexual bimaturation in sexually size-dimorphic species: (1) higher characteristic growth rates for members of the larger sex, (2) larger size at birth, hatching or metamorphosis for members of the larger sex or (3) smaller ratio of size at maturity to asymptotic size (relative size at maturity) for members of the larger sex. Of these three options, sex differences in relative size at maturity are most common in size-dimorphic species and, in both male-larger and female-larger species, members of the larger sex frequently mature at a smaller proportion of their asymptotic size than do members of the smaller sex. Information about the growth and maturation patterns of a taxon can be used to determine relationships between sexual size dimorphism and sexual bimaturation for the members of that taxon. This process is illustrated for Anolis lizards, a genus in which both sexes exhibit the same strong correlation (r 0.97) between size at maturity and asymptotic size, and in which the relative size at maturity is inversely related to asymptotic size for both sexes. As a result, sexually size-dimorphic species of anoles exhibit the expected pattern of a smaller relative size at maturity for members of the larger sex. However, for species in this genus, sex differences in the relative size at maturity are not strong enough to produce the same age at maturity for both sexes in sexually size-dimorphic species. Members of the larger sex (usually males) are still expected to mature at older ages than members of the smaller sex in Anolis lizards. 相似文献
