Forty epiphyseal unions were studied in the two subspecies of the Japanese macaque at known chronological ages. The age standards of the beginning and completion of epiphyseal union were estimated. The total score of the ratings of the unions revealed significant correlations with chronological age before 9 years of age. The linear regressions were calculated in each group of different sex and different subspecies in order to enable predictions to be made of the chronological age from the total score. Although males and females generally showed the same pattern of sequences, the unions of the females united earlier than those of the males in both subspecies before 9 years of age. The Yaku subspecies demonstrated an earlier union than the common Japanese macaque in both sexes before the age of 9 years old. The epiphyseal union of the Japanese macaque usually developed earlier than the reported union in the rhesus macaque. A large number of epiphyseal unions united at least partially and the total score deviated widely during the range from around 4 to 6 years of age. This period was in accordance with the adolescent growth period, especially in males, with rapid growth of body size as observed based on by somatometrical measurements. The skeletal growth of the trunk was generally late compared with that of the limbs. During the range after 8 years of age, some unions of the trunk united earlier in males than in females. The epiphyseal union could allow a more precise age estimation than the body mass or dental eruption during a certain range of ages. However, developmental estimations obtained from animals fed artificially, as the present samples were, must be applied with caution to wild animals.  相似文献

Age of dental eruption and epiphyseal fusion is estimated for the permanent dentition and long bone epiphyses of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), with 299 skeletons of individuals with known age of death, from the Cayo Santiago skeletal collection. Epiphyses at a given joint tend to fuse at the same time. While males and females tend to have the same pattern of epiphyseal fusion, females' epiphyses fuse earlier than those of males, espeically at the elbow and knee joints. The order of epiphyseal fusion in rhesus macaques follows the general primate pattern. Times of dental eruption for males and females are generally the same, except for the relatively late eruption of the canine in the males. The order of eruption follows a common primate pattern (dm2?M1?I1?I2?M2?(P3,P4)?C?M3). Multiple regressions were calculated in order to allow determination of developmental state, or predictions of chronological age, from epiphyseal fusion and/or dental eruption scores in juvenile rhesus macaques. Standard deviations of residuals from these regressions indicate considerable variation in developmental state among aminals of the same chronological age. The lack of correlation between residuals from the separate skeletal and dental regressions, indicates that skeletal and dental development are largely independent.  相似文献

The development of so-called long bones in the extremity has been studied roentgenographically in forty-seven males and fifty-one females cynomolgus monkeys bred and reared at the National Institute of Health. The age of the females ranged from five months to eight years and nine months, and that of the males was from four months to seven years. In addition, the fetuses of six to twenty weeks of gestation age were examined for the time of appearance of ossification centers. As the biological parameters concerning body growth, the body weight and the bone length were measured and the secondary ossification centers were scrutinized and assessed the maturity process on the basis of the criteria that divided the state into eleven stages. Also the allometric analyses of body weight against bone length was conducted. Most of the secondary ossification centers except the proximal fibulal epiphysis appeared during the period from the prenatal stage (15-20 weeks of gestationage) to the postnatal one (several months of age). From four to five months of age, many ossification centers had developed to some extent. But, the appearance of proximal fibulal epiphysis was delayed and often lacking until 10 months of age in female and one year and three months of age in male. The earliest epiphyseal fusion was observed at the distal humeral epiphysis in both sexes. The latest epiphyseal fusion was observed at the distal ulnal epiphysis in both sexes and at the distal ulnal and radial epiphyses in female. From this study, the time of fusion was at five and three guarters years of age in females and at six and a half years of age in males. As a result, it is suggested that the estimation of animal's age might be put to practical use by introducing the assessing method that the score was given from the observation of the secondary ossification center.  相似文献

X-rays of mandibles from ringed seal fetuses ( n = 15), newborns ( n = 12), and young-of-the-year ( n = 11), collected up to early June, were examined for the presence, location, and eruption patterns of deciduous and permanent teeth. The presence of a neonatal line and cementum in permanent canines was determined microscopically. Fetuses sampled in October-November had only unerupted, deciduous tooth germs, but by late January there were robust, deciduous teeth at il-2 pc2-4 and small permanent teeth at 11-2 Cl PCl-5. In newborns collected in early April, 109 of 143 (76%) deciduous teeth were resorbed completely. The remaining 34 deciduous teeth were partially resorbed; six (18%) had erupted and likely would be shed. By late April young-of-the-year had no deciduous teeth remaining. In newborns 54% of the permanent teeth (102/188) were erupted < 2 mm, and by late May the permanent dentition was erupted fully. The neonatal line first appeared in the canine teeth of young-of-the-year collected in mid-April and was 100% present after early May. There was no cementum apparent on any canine collected up to early June. Two seals were missing one and two permanent incisors, respectively. No supernumerary teeth or morphological variants were observed.  相似文献

The sequence of tooth eruption and replacement in Reeves' muntjac was determined from captive animals of known age. Pronounced sexual dimorphism is shown by the permanent upper canine which in the male is large, tusk-like and is used as a weapon. The upper canine was the first deciduous tooth to be replaced in males, at approximately 21 weeks of age, compared with 53–57 weeks in the female. The permanent mandibular teeth erupted in the order: molars, first and second incisors, premolars, third incisor and canine. The maxillary teeth erupted in the order: first molar, canine (in male), second and third molars, canine (in female), premolars. The full complement of 34 functional permanent teeth was attained by 83–92 weeks of age.  相似文献

Squirrel monkeys, colony-born from Bolivian parents, were studied to establish the sequences and timing of eruption for deciduous and permanent teeth. Infants were born with a naked gingiva, and in only one monkey was di1 present at birth. The eruption of the lower deciduous teeth preceded their upper counterparts with the exception of di2, dc, and dpm2. No significant differences were found between the right and left quadrants of the mandible and maxilla. No significant sexual differences were found in the age of eruption. By the age of 14 weeks, all deciduous teeth had erupted. The sequence of eruption of the replacement teeth was different from that of milk teeth. The differences lie in the delayed eruption of canine teeth and in the inverted sequence, from the back to the front, of the premolar series. Significant sexual differences were found in total eruption (TE) for PM3 and I2 (P < 0.05) and highly significant differences (P < 0.01) in TE and initial eruption (IE) for C1, females being more precocious than males. The age at which monkeys completed dental eruption was highly variable, 103–119 weeks for males and 89–112 weeks for females. Differences were found when our results were compared with those of Long and Cooper [1968] for Colombian squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

The presacral vertebrae have various secondary centers of ossification, whose timing of fusion can be used for age estimation of human skeletal remains up to the middle to the latter third decade. However, detailed information about the age at which these secondary centers of ossification fuse has been lacking. In this study, the timing of epiphyseal union in presacral vertebrae was studied in a sample of modern Portuguese skeletons (57 females and 47 males) between the ages of 9 and 30, taken from the Lisbon documented skeletal collection. A detailed photographic record of these epiphyses and the age ranges for the different stages of epiphyseal union are provided. Partial union of epiphyses was observed from 11 to 27 years of age. In general, centers of ossification begin to fuse first in the cervical and lumbar vertebrae, followed by centers of ossification in the thoracic region. The first center of ossification to complete fusion is usually that of the mammillary process in lumbar vertebrae. This is usually followed by that of the transverse process, spinous transverse process, and annular ring, regardless of vertebra type. There were no statistically significant sex differences in timing of fusion, but there was a trend toward early maturation in females for some vertebra or epiphyses. Bilateral epiphyses did not show statistically significant differences in timing of fusion. This study offers information on timing of fusion of diverse epiphyseal locations useful for age estimation of complete or fragmented human skeletal remains. The endemic South American “ungulates” (SANU) were traditionally assumed to be a monophyletic offshoot of the Granorder Ungulata, but the current reorganization of the extant ungulates in Laurasiatheria and Afrotheria (based on molecular data) leaved them in an undetermined systematic position. The delayed dental eruption versus cranial growth was proposed as a hard-tissue synapomorphy of Afrotheria. In a recent paper, at least some endemic SANU (Notoungulata, Astrapotheria, and possibly Pyrotheria) were interpreted as allied to Afrotheres by having a late replacement of deciduous cheek teeth. This statement was based on: (1) the usual occurrence within these groups of individuals with deciduous and permanent teeth; (2) the individual size (estimated comparing the length/width ratio of cheek teeth) of specimens with permanent premolars erupted is indistinguishable from that of specimens with deciduous premolars (putative juveniles), and (3) the retention of at least dP1–dP3 in adult specimens of Parastrapotherium (Astrapotheria). Herein we critically examine the presumed existence of delayed dental eruption in astrapotheres, pyrotheres and xenungulates and the assumptions on which it was based. The alleged evidences supporting the occurrence of delayed dental eruption in SANU arise from misinterpreted information from the literature and conceptual mistakes (i.e. delayed dental eruption versus cranial growth was confused with delayed replacement of premolars versus molar eruption). Based on examination of at-hand specimens, we found that there is no evidence for a delayed premolar replacement relative to the eruption of the molars in astrapotheres, pyrotheres, and xenungulates. A delayed dental eruption in relation to jaw growth does not occur at least in Astrapotherium magnum. Although a very recent study proposed close relationships among afrotheres and at least notoungulates and xenungulates, a more complete analysis is still needed to elucidate the evolutionary relationships of astrapotheres and pyrotheres.  相似文献

Prenatal dental development was investigated in 19 black howler monkey fetuses that ranged in crown-rump length from 84 mm to 170.5 mm. During this period of fetal development, all of the deciduous teeth and the first permanent molars were found to pass through various stages of crown and root formation. The deciduous incisors, canines, and first molars each calcified from a single calcification center. The second deciduous molars each calcified from two separate calcification centers. And, the third deciduous and first permanent molars each calcified from four separate calcification centers. The morphogenetic events involved in the establishment of the molar crown patterns were found to differ markedly from those of their counterparts among catarrhine primates. In all cases, however, the calcification sequence was found to be directly related to the morphology of the developing crown.  相似文献

Enamel hypoplasias, deficiencies in enamel thickness resulting from disturbances during the secretory phase of enamel development, are generally believed to result from nonspecific metabolic and nutritional disruptions. However, data are scare on the prevalence and chronological distributions. of hypoplasias in populations experiencing mild to moderate malnutrition. The purpose of this article is to present baseline data on the prevalences and chronological distributions of enamel hypoplasias, by sex and for all deciduous and permanent anterior teeth, in 300 5 to 15-year-old rural Mexican children. Identification of hypoplasias was aided by comparison to a published standard (Federation Dentaire Internationale: Int. Dent. J. 32(2):159-167, 1982). The location of defects, by transverse sixths of tooth crowns, was used to construct distributions of defects by age at development. One or more hypoplasias were detected in 46.7% (95% CI = 40.9-52.5%) of children. Among the unworn and completely erupted teeth, the highest prevalence of defects was found on the permanent maxillary central incisors (44.4% with one or more hypoplasias), followed by the permanent maxillary canine (28.0%) and the remaining permanent teeth (26.2 to 22.2%) Only 6.1% of the completely erupted and unworn deciduous teeth were hypoplastic. The prevalence of enamel defects on the permanent teeth was up to tenfold greater than that found in studies of less marginal populations that used the FDI method. The prevalence of defects in transverse zones suggests a peak frequency of hypoplasias during the second and third years for the permanent teeth, corresponding to the age at weaning in this group. In the deciduous teeth, a smaller peak occurs between 30 and 40 weeks post gestation. The frequency of defects after three years of age is slightly higher in females than males, suggesting a sex difference in access to critical resources.  相似文献

Human deciduous and permanent teeth exhibit different developmental processes, morphologies, histological characteristics and life cycles. In addition, their pulp tissues react differently to external stimuli, such as the pulp sensitivity test, dental trauma and pulp therapy materials. These suggest differences in gene expression and regulation, and in this study we compared gene-expression profiles of the human dental pulp from deciduous and permanent teeth. Pulp tissues from permanent premolars and deciduous molars aged 11–14 years were extirpated and mRNA was isolated for cDNA microarray analysis, and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Other teeth were used for immunohistochemical analysis (IHC). Microarray analysis identified 263 genes with a twofold or greater difference in expression level between the two types of pulp tissue, 43 and 220 of which were more abundant in deciduous and permanent pulp tissues, respectively. qPCR analysis was conducted for eight randomly selected genes, and the findings were consistent with the cDNA microarray results. IHC confirmed that insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1) was broadly expressed in deciduous dental pulp tissue, but minimally expressed in permanent dental pulp tissue. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that calbindin 1 (CALB1), leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 5 (LGR5), and gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor beta 1 (GABRB1) were abundantly expressed in permanent predentin/odontoblasts, but only minimally expressed in deciduous dental pulp tissue. These results show that deciduous and permanent pulp tissues have different characteristics and gene expression, suggesting that they may have different functions and responses to therapies focused on pulp or dentin regeneration.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) seeded into Gelfoam® on structural bone allograft healing. Thirty New Zealand white rabbits were divided into two groups. Segmental bone defect was created on diaphysis of the femur, and the defect was reconstructed with structural bone allograft. In experimental group, structural allograft was wrapped around by Gelfoam® containing autologous MSCs, whereas cells were not included in control group. At 4, 8, 12 weeks, the femur of rabbits underwent radiographic and histologic evaluation for bony union. Bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2), BMP-4, BMP-7, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) were measured within the grafted periosteal tissue. Bony union was not achieved in both groups at 4 and 8 weeks. At 12 weeks, three out of five femurs in experimental group were united, but one out of five in control group was united. Mean Taira scores were significantly different between two groups. The expression of BMP-2 was significantly higher at 4, 8 weeks, the expressions of BMP-4 and BMP-7 were significantly higher at 8 and 12 weeks, and the expression of VEGF and RANKL were significantly higher at all time points in experimental group. Incorporation of the structural bone allograft could be enhanced if allograft is covered with Gelfoam® containing autologous MSCs. MSCs have influence on not only bone formation, but neo-angiogenesis, and bone resorption.  相似文献

The epiphyseal union, eruptive sequence of the permanent teeth, and sexual maturity are examined in 150 common tree shrews (Tupaia glis), and are compared with those in other mammals including primates. The sequence of epiphyseal union is: elbow-hip-ankle-wrist-knee-shoulder. The sequence of epiphyseal union in mammals is not so fixed as has been previously considered. The eruptive sequence of the permanent teeth in the common tree shrew is more similar to that of insectivores than primates. The gonads are examined histologically to determine the sexual maturation. The order of completion of these three developmental aspects is also investigated and is compared with those in other mammals. Although the tree shrews have many similarities with platyrrhines in the development of the eco-sensitive organs such as the epiphyses of the extremities, their inclusion in the order Primates is still doubtful.  相似文献

Two regression methods are proposed for estimating age in nonhuman primates from deciduous dental eruption data. The first method consists of step-wise multiple regression using dental eruption state (present/absent) of each tooth as independent variables. The second method uses the total number of teeth erupted as an independent variable in an exponential model. We applied both methods to a sample of 175 well nourished infant and juvenile baboons (Papio sp.), housed in an outdoor breeding corral, and ranging in age from birth to 763 days. From this sample, 129 animals were used to compute the regression formulae, and 46 animals were used for cross validation. Both models show good overall fits and high predictive accuracy with the independent cross validation sample.  相似文献

In a recent paper Schwartz ('74) proposes revised homologies of the deciduous and permanent teeth in living lemuriform primates of the family Indriidae. However, new evidence provided by the deciduous dentition ofAvahi suggests that the traditional interpretations are correct, specifically: (1) the lateral teeth in the dental scraper of Indriidae are homologous with the incisors of Lemuridae and Lorisidae, not the canines; (2) the dental formula for the lower deciduous teeth of indriids is 2.1.3; (3) the dental formula for the lower permanent teeth of indriids is 2.0.2.3; and (4) decrease in number of incisors during primate evolution was usually in the sequence I3, then I2, then I1. It appears that dental reduction during primate evolution occurred at the ends of integrated incisor and cheek tooth units to minimize disruption of their functional integrity.  相似文献

The chondrocyte maturation cycle and endochondral ossification were studied in human, fetal cartilage Anlagen and in postnatal meta‐epiphyses. The relationship between the lacunar area, the inter‐territorial fibril network variations, and calcium phosphorus nucleation in primary and secondary ossification centers were assessed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphometry. The Anlage topographic, zonal classification was derived from the anatomical nomenclature of the completely developed long bone (diaphysis, metaphyses and epiphyses). A significant increase in the chondrocyte lacunar area was documented in the Anlage of epiphyseal zones 4 and 3 to zone 2 (metaphysis) and zone 1 (diaphysis), with the highest variation from zone 2 to zone 1. An inverse reduction in the intercellular matrix area and matrix interfibrillar empty space was also documented. These findings are consistent with the osmotic passage of free cartilage water from the interfibrillar space into the swelling chondrocytes, which increased the ion concentrations to a critical threshold for mineral precipitation in the matrix. The mineralized cartilage served as a scaffold for osteoblast apposition both in primary and secondary ossification centers and in the metaphyseal growth plate cartilage, though at different periods of bone Anlage development and with distinct patterns for each zone. All developmental processes shared a common initial pathway but progressed at different rates, modes and organization in diaphysis, metaphysis and epiphysis. In the ossification phase the developing vascular supply appeared to play a key role in determining the cortical or trabecular structure of the long bones. J. Objectives

The present study was designed to investigate the microbial profiles of teeth in different locations in mixed-dentition-stage children, and to compare the microbiomes of permanent and deciduous teeth in the same healthy oral cavity.

Methods

Supragingival plaque samples of teeth in various locations—the first permanent molars, deciduous molars, deciduous canines and incisors and permanent incisors—were collected from 20 healthy mixed-dentition-stage children with 10–12 permanent teeth erupted. Plaque DNA was extracted, and the V3–V4 hypervariable region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene was amplified and subjected to sequencing.

Results

On average, 18,051 high-quality sequences per sample were generated. Permanent tooth sites tended to host more diverse bacterial communities than those of deciduous tooth sites. A total of 12 phyla, 21 classes, 38 orders, 66 families, 74 genera were detected ultimately. Five predominant phyla (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Fusobacteria and Actinobacteria) were highly variable among sites. Of 26 genera with a mean relative abundance of >0.1%, 16 showed significant differences in relative abundance among the groups. More than 20% of the total operational taxonomical units were detected only in permanent or deciduous teeth. The variation in the microbial community composition was due mainly to permanent teeth being enriched in Actinomyces and deciduous teeth in Treponema. The core microbiome of supragingival plaque in mixed dentition comprised 19 genera with complex correlationships.

Conclusion

Our results suggest differences in microbial diversity and composition between permanent and deciduous teeth sites in mixed dentition. Moreover, the core microbiome of these sites was determined. These findings enhance our understanding of the development of the native oral microbiota with age.  相似文献

This study documents the timing of epiphyseal union at the innominate, femur, tibia, and fibula in a sample of modern Portuguese skeletons. The sample was taken from the Lisbon documented skeletal collection and it is comprised of 57 females and 49 males between the ages of 9 and 25. Individuals are mostly representative of the middle-to-low socioeconomic segment of the early 20th century Lisbon population. A total of 18 anatomical locations were examined for epiphyseal union using a three-stage scheme: 1) no union; 2) partial union; and 3) completed union, all traces of fusion having disappeared. Results show that females are ahead of males by 1-2 years and provide similar age ranges for the stages of union than previous studies. Some variations between studies can be explained by methodological differences between dry bone and radiographic observations. However, a review of the literature indicates that socioeconomic status of a given population seems to be of decisive importance to the rate of ossification and most of the differences in skeletal maturation across studies and populations can probably be ascribed to different levels of social and economic development of the societies in which the individuals lived. Although the effects of socioeconomic status in skeletal maturation are greater during childhood than in adolescence, as to make the timing of epiphyseal union a reliable estimate of age at death, they are not negligible and age estimates should take into account the likely socioeconomic status of the individual, whose remains are under examination.  相似文献

Although much has been written regarding the treatment of facial bone fractures, at the present time there are no available investigations of human microscopic sections to verify the exact nature of the healing process. The consensus in the literature is that following fractures of the midface, the bone segments are united by fibrous union. Biopsies of the healed fracture sites were obtained in 10 consecutive patients who underwent secondary reconstructive procedures to correct residual deformities. Clinical assessment confirmed that the fractures were completely healed and stable. Histologic sections were obtained across the healed fracture sites, sent for H&E staining, and then examined by light microscopy. All specimens showed that the defects between the segments were obliterated by the formation of a mature compact bone. This bridging bone was characterized by concentric lamellae surrounded by a typical bony architecture. From this study it can be concluded that fractures of the midface heal by direct bony union.  相似文献
