A new acropomatid, Malakichthys barbatus, is described on the basis of 27 specimens (76.3–180.1 mm SL) collected from Suruga Bay to Tosa Bay, along the southern Pacific coast of Japan. The new species is unique in having numerous pairs of spines on the chin (a pair of spines in other congeners). Although the new species resembles M. elegans in having a slender body (the depth less than 35% SL), the former is further distinguishable from the latter in having a slender first proximal radial of the anal fin with no hollow (broad with a cone-shaped hollow in M. elegans), 43–48 lateral line scales (48–51), modally 21 gill rakers on the lower arm (modally 23), and a dark blotch on the opercle (no remarkable blotch).  Larvae of two paralichthyids, Pseudorhombus oculocirris and P. arsius, are described and illustrated from specimens collected off Tosa Bay, southern Japan. Peudorhombus oculocirris larvae (5 specimens, 4.5–7.8 mm BL) are characteristic in having 6 or 7 elongated anterior dorsal fin rays and poorly developed head spines and melanophores on the tail. Pseudorhombus arsius larvae (3 specimens, 5.3–8.4 mm BL) are distinctive in having 11 or 12 elongated anterior dorsal fin rays and well-developed head spines, including a row of spines on the sphenotic. Analysis of the stomach contents of 1002 specimens of Champsodon snyderi (Champsodontidae) (17.3–91.2mm SL) from Tosa Bay, southern Japan, showed that species to primarily feed on crustaceans and fishes (87.9% by frequency, 37.6% by weight for the former; 17.3% and 60.7% for the latter, respectively), although fishes occurred more often in stomachs of individuals larger than 50mm SL. Champsodon snyderi ingested large prey fishes (60.5–101.0% of predator SL), the maximum weight recorded for a single ingested specimen being 50.9% of the predator weight. Mesopelagic Bregmaceros nectabanus were by far the dominant prey fish, followed by C. snyderi (cannibalism), indicating that C. snyderi leaves the bottom to feed in the pelagic environment during the night.  相似文献

A total of 148 specimens of Mitsukurina owstoni were examined for morphology, distribution, stomach contents, and reproductive condition. Sixty-nine males (81.7–208.5 cm in total length, TL) and 56 females (92.8–196.1 cm TL) were collected with bottom gillnets along a steep slope of the Tokyo Submarine Canyon (100–350 m depth) from May 1995 to October 1996. In addition, data were obtained from 23 specimens of M. owstoni collected from Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, and the Enshu-nada Sea from 1972 to 2001. Japanese catch records already published (from 1898) plus those in the present study were from the Pacific coast of Japan, from Choshi to the Kii Peninsula. The main fishing season for M. owstoni by bottom gillnet fishing in the Tokyo Submarine Canyon was October to April, at depths of 200–245 m. No specimens examined were sexually mature, including the largest male (208.5 cm TL) and female (196.1 cm TL) recorded. Of 110 stomachs from specimens from the Tokyo Submarine Canyon, 32 (29.1%) were empty. The remainder variously included teleost fishes, squids, decapods, isopods, digested food, and human refuse. Teleost fishes (Macrouridae sp. and Stomiidae spp.), an isopod (Cymothoidae), and decapods (Pasiphaea sinensis and Sergia sp.) were the only identifiable prey, the indication being that teleosts (all size ranges) were of primary importance as prey for M. owstoni.  相似文献

Pelagic larvae of two pleuronectiforms, Poecilopsetta plinthus (Poecilopsettidae) and Parabothus coarctatus (Bothidae), are described and illustrated based on specimens collected off Tosa Bay, southern Japan. Postflexion larvae (8.2–11.9 mm BL) of Poecilopsetta plinthus are characteristic in having a series of melanophore patches along the dorsal and anal fin bases and the inner margins of the pterygiophore zones, and linear myoseptal pigmentation also along the inner margins of the latter. Preflexion and flexion larvae (5.0–6.3 mm BL) of Parabothus coarctatus are distinctive in having the dorsal fin origin located level with the dorsal margin of the eye and seven elongated rays in the anterior part of that fin. The deep-benthic chondrichthyan fishes collected by 584 hauls of otter-trawl from the Okinawa Trough, Kyushu-Palau Ridge, Pacific continental slope off northern Honshu Island (“Tohoku Slope”) and continental slope of Okhotsk Sea off Hokkaido (“Okhotsk Slope”) were analyzed. Sixty-one species were recorded from 200 to 1,520 m in depths; 37 species from the Okinawa Trough, 10 from the Kyushu-Palau Ridge, 18 from the Tohoku Slope, and nine from the Okhotsk Slope. The Okinawa Trough has the most varied composition, with many species of the Squalidae, Scyliorhinidae, and Rajidae (genusRaja). The Kyushu-Palau Ridge has a relatively high number of squalid species, but no species of the Rajidae or Chimaeriformes. The Tohoku Slope fauna is relatively varied, comprising six families, of which the Rajidae (genusBathyraja) is the most numerous, followed by the Squalidae. The Okhotsk Slope has the least number of species, and is characterized by a remarkable dominance of the Rajidae (genusBathyraja).  相似文献

A new stargazer,Selenoscopus turbisquamatus, is described from 30 specimens from the Kyushu-Palau Ridge, the coasts of Kii Peninsula, Japan, and the Norfolk Ridge, northern Tasman Sea. The species appears to be most closely related to the genusUranoscopus in having two dorsal fins, a spinous dorsal fin consisting of feeble spines, a stout cleithral spine, an externally visible pelvic spur, two supracleithral spines, and no postcleithrum, but differs from it in having a smooth posterior margin of the gill flap, uniserial dentary teeth, random arrangement of body scales, no subopercular spine, an intervention of the pterosphenoid (=alisphenoid) between the frontal and the parasphenoid, and the first and second haemal spines depressed on the centra. A new genus,Selenoscopus, is therefore proposed, based on these characters.  相似文献

A new emmelichthyid,Erythrocles microceps, is described from 15 specimens collected in Mimase Fish Market and Tosa Bay, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. It differs from its most similar congener,E. acarina, in having a greater number of lateral line scales (70–72 vs. 62–67 inacarina), more elongate body (body depth 23.8–25.9% SL vs. 27–29% SL), and smaller head (head) length 26.8–28.4% SL vs. 34–36% SL).  相似文献

Stomach contents of 75 specimens of the cornetfish Fistularia commersonii, collected in shallow water off Kuchinoerabu-jima Island, southern Japan were analyzed. Many fish contained multiple prey. The prey were mostly fish, grouped into two types, pelagic and reef fishes. The size of prey increased as the size of F. commersonii increased. All the small individuals (<50 cm SL) had fed on only small reef fish. However, most of the large individuals (>50 cm SL) had fed on either prey type. Both pelagic and reef fishes usually occurred simultaneously in shallow water, suggesting that most of the large cornetfish may selectively hunt either type of prey. Early life history of a seahorse, Hippocampus mohnikei, in Tokyo Bay, Japan   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The early morphological development, seasonal and spatial occurrence patterns, and food habits of a seahorse, Hippocampus mohnikei, in offshore waters of Tokyo Bay, central Japan, were studied on the basis of 206 juvenile and young specimens (6.0–65.3 mm TL) collected between August 1995 and January 1999. All the specimens were collected within the period from May to January, inclusive, each year. In the least developed specimen (6.0 mm TL), the number of dorsal, anal, and pectoral fin rays had attained the adult complement, whereas the minute caudal fin, consisting of two rays, was present in juveniles of 6.0–26.4 mm TL. Hippocampus mohnikei≧35 mm TL, being larger than settlement size (ca. 30 mm TL), had very low gut fullness index values (GFI = 0, >70% of specimens), whereas those of 15–29 mm TL had higher values (GFI = 2–4, >80% of specimens). In addition, larger individuals selectively fed on larger planktonic animals (species of Brachyura), which occurred naturally at low densities, although smaller food items, such as Oithona davisae and Penilia avirostris, occurred abundantly, being consumed by smaller H. mohnikei individuals (15–34 mm TL). These results indicated that food availability for H. mohnikei in offshore waters of Tokyo Bay is significant for individuals larger than settlement size, because their food preference would shift from smaller food items to larger food items, which would be scarce in their environments. We report the finding of two species of Mantoniella from the Weddell Sen and Prydz Bay, Antarctica. As well as M. squamata, a cosmopolitan species, we describe M. antarctica sp. nov., the second species in this genus. M. antarctica is covered with two distinctive types of discoid scales. The flagella bear only the smaller of the scale types whereas the cell body has both types, the larger overlying the smaller.  相似文献

The juvenile development of four Japanese flatheads (Platycephalidae),Onigocia macrolepis. O. spinosa, Inegocia japonica andRogadius asper, is described and illustrated from specimens trawled in Tosa Bay, southern Japan. Juveniles of twoOnigocia species are diagnosed by an ocular flap and absence (O. macrolepis) or presence (O. spinosa) of distinct dark bars on the body.Inegocia japonica juveniles are distinctive in having a heavily pigmented body and 12 dorsal and anal fin soft rays.Rogadius asper has a unique antrorse preopercular spine prior to 15 mm SL. During the early juvenile stage, strongly negative allometric growth occurs in the interorbital region, accompanied by migration of the eyes from the lateral to dorsal surface of the head.  相似文献

 This study redescribes Bregmaceros mcclellandi Thompson, 1840, based on one specimen (74.4 mm SL) from the Bay of Bengal and 66 specimens (30.0–84.7 mm SL) from Mumbai (Bombay), India, because the type specimens have apparently been lost. The present specimens are characterized by having black dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins and show the following morphology: caudal fin slightly forked; body chromatophores present mainly at the dorsal part; no scales on cheek; vertebrae 52–55 (13–15 + 38–41); dorsal rays 52–59; anal rays 54–60; pectoral rays 18–20; caudal rays 27–31 (principal rays 14); transverse scales 14–15. In the 66 Mumbai specimens, it was confirmed that the distinctive black fin pigmentation developed sequentially with growth, with complete pigmentation first on the anterior lobe of the dorsal fin, then simultaneously on the posterior lobe of the dorsal fin, the caudal fin, and the pectoral fin, and last, on the anal fin. This species is known only from the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Gulf of Thailand. A review of 16 nominal Bregmaceros species indicates that, besides B. mcclellandi, the distinctive dark fin pigmentation is found in B. atripinnis (Tickell), B. atlanticus Goode and Bean, B. japonicus Tanaka, and B. lanceolatus Shen. B. atripinnis is considered a junior synonym of B. mcclellandi, and the others are clearly distinct from B. mcclellandi. Comments are made on some of the characters to more fully characterize the species and for reference in future revisionary and phylogenetic studies. Myersina is redefined, based on the presence of an elongate first dorsal fin in at least the adult males, two preopercular pores, gill membranes fused in the ventral midline and either fused to the isthmus or forming a free fold over it, cycloid scales only on the body, and midline of predorsal region scaleless. It now includes four species traditionally assigned to Cryptocentrus but here placed in Myersina ("C". crocatus, "C". filifer, "C". pretoriusi, and "C". yangii). This concept of Myersina still retains the species originally assigned to it (M. macrostoma, M. lachneri, and M. nigrivirgata). The recently described M. larsonae belongs in Stonogobiops. These two genera almost definitely form a monophyletic group. However, it is possible that the species of Stonogobiops (the monophyly of which is well supported) could be more closely related to one or more species of Myersina than either is to other Myersina species, because the monophyly of the latter genus remains uncertain. This study describes the diet of the sandbar shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus, highlighting differences in diet within various regions of the Virginia (USA) nursery area, as well as ontogenetic changes in diet. Stomach samples were obtained in 2001 and 2002 from 232 sharks caught by gillnets or longlines. Historical data from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Shark Ecology Program were also analyzed. Ontogenetic changes in diet were evident, with crustacean prey decreasing in frequency with increasing shark size, and elasmobranch prey importance increasing with increasing shark size. Whereas previous research in Chincoteague Bay, VA showed the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, was the dominant crustacean in sandbar shark diet, the mantis shrimp, Squilla empusa, dominated the crustacean portion of the diet in this study. Differences in diet of sharks were observed among locations within the study area. Small juveniles (≤80 cm precaudal length) in the lower Chesapeake Bay ate more fishes, whereas Eastern Shore juveniles ate more crustaceans. Crustacean prey items varied among locations along the Eastern Shore, with more portunid crabs consumed in waters near Wachapreague and more mantis shrimp consumed near Sand Shoal Inlet. Our study showed that Carcharhinus plumbeus is a generalist predator and is thus unlikely to strongly impact the population of any particular prey species, and in turn is not likely to be strongly affected by fluctuations in abundance of a single prey species.  相似文献

 A rare deep-sea ophidiid genus Mastigopterus known to contain two species, M. imperator Smith and Radcliffe, 1913 and M. praetor Smith and Radcliffe, 1913, was reviewed on the basis of six specimens including the holotypes of both species. Dorsal and anal fin ray counts and the size of cephalic sensory pores previously thought to be diagnostic characteristics to discriminate the two species did not suggest the presence of two forms, the large (M. imperator) and the small species (M. praetor), in the genus. Apparently the genus is represented by a single species, M. imperator, known from off Madagascar, the East and South China Seas and Papua New Guinea. Specialist predators may respond strongly to sensory cues from preferred prey, but responses by generalist predators, although predicted to be less specific, are poorly known. Among squamate reptiles, diet and strength of response to chemical prey cues covary geographically in snakes that are specialist predators. There have been no previous studies of correspondence between diet and chemosensory response in lizards that are prey generalists. Actively foraging lizards discriminate between prey chemicals and control substances. It has been speculated that differential responses among prey species are unlikely in typical species that are dietary generalists. We examined this relationship in Podarcis lilfordi, an omnivorous lacertid that consumes a wide variety of animal prey. In experiments in which chemical stimuli were presented on cotton swabs, lizards responded more strongly to chemicals from a broad spectrum of prey types than to deionized water, an odorless control. These findings plus previous data showing that P. lilfordi is capable of prey chemical discrimination suggest that P. lilfordi can identify a wide range of potential prey using chemical cues. However, there was no evidence of differential response to stimuli among prey species, even in comparisons of prey included in the natural diet and potential prey not in the diet. The results, although limited to a single species, are consistent with the hypothesis that lizard species that are prey generalists do not exhibit the differential response strengths to chemical prey cues observed in snakes that have more specialized diets. Myxine formosana, a new hagfish species, is described on the basis of the specimens from the Pacific Ocean southwest of Taiwan at depths 588–1500 m. It is five-gilled and white-headed with a three-cusp multicusp on the anterior set of cusps and a two-cusp multicusp on the posterior set. Myxine formosana, M. circifrons, M. mccoskeri, and M. robinsi are superficially rather similar, but M. formosana has low to vestigal caudal finfolds. North Pacific specimens of Melanochlamys sea slugs were examined morphologically (including the male reproductive morphology, shell and external coloration) and were sequenced for three genes (mitochondrial COI and 16S and nuclear H3). Phylogenetic and species delimitation analyses were used to determine the evolutionary relationships and species diversity among the specimens examined. Both molecular and morphological data revealed an unexpected high level of cryptic diversity. At least four distinct species occur on the Northwestern Pacific. Melanochlamys ezoensis occurs in Russia and temperate and cold areas in Japan. Three additional undescribed species occur in Japan and/or South Korea. One of the undescribed species occurs both in South Korea and in Japan, but only in Tokyo Bay, suggesting that it could be non‐native in Japan. Two distinct species occur on the Northeastern Pacific coast; Melanochlamys diomedea is widespread from Southern California to Alaska, whereas M. ezoensis was found only in San Francisco Bay, suggesting a human‐mediated introduction. This is further supported by the absence of records of M. ezoensis in San Francisco prior to 2001. The species diversity of Melanochlamys in the Northwestern Pacific is much greater than in the Northeastern Pacific; it is hypothesized that differences in geographic and ocean current system complexity might account for different responses to glacial extinction and postglacial expansion.  相似文献
