A number of mosquito species avoid predator-inhabited oviposition sites by detecting predator-released kairomones. In the laboratory, we found that when offered de-ionized water and de-ionized water conditioned with Notonecta maculata, gravid Anopheles gambiae females preferentially oviposited into the former. We then conducted further experiments using two chemical components found in Notonecta-conditioned water, chemically pure n-tricosane and/or n-heneicosane, that was previously shown to repel oviposition by Culiseta longiareolata. These hydrocarbons failed to deter oviposition by An. gambiae females. Thus, different mosquito species may rely on distinct chemical cues to avoid predators. Identification and chemical characterization of such kairomones could facilitate innovative, environmentally sound mosquito control. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Ovipositing females should choose egg-laying sites which maximize the growth and survivorship of their offspring. Accordingly, they should avoid habitats with high densities of competitors and predators and should choose sites with adequate food. We tested experimentally the oviposition response of the mosquito, Culiseta longiareolata Macquart, to extra food and two species which are both potential competitors and predators of its offspring: conspecific larvae and green toad ( Bufo viridis ) tadpoles.
2. We conducted the experiment in outdoor artificial pools where wild C. longiareolata females were presented with choices of all combinations of the presence or absence of: (1) C.longiareolata larvae, (2) B.viridis tadpoles, and (3) extra food (a mixture of ground fish food and mouse chow).
3. Oviposition rates averaged approximately 4 times greater in response to extra food.
4. The presence of the tadpoles, particularly later in the experiment when they were larger, caused a significant reduction (approximately 50%) in oviposition rate.
5. We did not detect a statistically significant effect of conspecific larvae on oviposition habitat selection.
6. Our results indicate that Culiseta females choose habitats for oviposition based on food availability. They also tend to avoid habitats containing Bufo tadpoles, presumably to avoid predation and/or competition. 相似文献

Oviposition habitat selection by the mosquito Culiseta longiareolata in response to risk of predation and conspecific larval density 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. 1. Most female Culiseta longiareolata (Diptera: Culicidae) avoid ovipositing in pools that contain the predatory backswimmer Notonecta maculata . Such oviposition habitat selection has been suggested to reflect a trade-off between the risk of predation on larvae and potential density-dependent fitness costs. This putative trade-off was examined. In particular, evidence was sought in support of direct female response to local heterogeneity in habitat quality.
2. Three habitat types were established using artificial outdoor pools: predator pools, and non-predator pools with either low or high densities of Culiseta larvae. During each experimental night, females were offered one of the three possible pair-wise treatment combinations.
3. The majority (≈88%) of females oviposited in low-density pools rather than in the predator- or high-density pools. Furthermore, a substantially higher proportion of females oviposited in predator pools when faced with the high-density alternative, however this was due largely to fewer females ovipositing in high- vs low-density pools.
4. Females of a second mosquito species ( Culex laticinctus ), the larvae of which are at a lower risk of predation, were predicted to exhibit weaker aversion to N. maculata ; this prediction was supported only weakly.
5. Oviposition habitat selection by female C. longiareolata does not appear to involve a behavioural response that is based on individual assessment of local heterogeneity in relative pool quality, at least not at the spatial scale examined here; alternative explanations are discussed. 相似文献

Primary succession on bare ground surrounded by intact ecosystems is, during its first stages, characterized by predator‐dominated arthropod communities. However, little is known on what prey sustains these predators at the start of succession and which factors drive the structure of these food webs. As prey availability can be extremely patchy and episodic in pioneer stages, trophic networks might be highly variable. Moreover, the importance of allochthonous versus autochthonous food sources for these pioneer predators is mostly unknown. To answer these questions, the gut content of 1,832 arthropod predators, including four species of carabid beetles, two lycosid and several linyphiid spider species caught in early and late pioneer stages of three glacier forelands, was screened molecularly to track intraguild and extraguild trophic interactions among all major prey groups occurring in these systems. Two‐thirds of the 2,310 identified food detections were collembolans and intraguild prey, while one‐third were allochthonous flying insects. Predator identity and not successional stage or valley had by far the strongest impact on the trophic interaction patterns. Still, the variability of prey spectra increased significantly from early to late pioneer stage, as did the niche width of the predators. As such the structure of pioneer arthropod food webs in recently deglaciated Alpine habitats seems to be driven foremost by predator identity while site and early successional effects contribute to a lesser extent to food web variability. Our findings also suggest that in these pioneer sites, predatory arthropods depend less on allochthonous aeolian prey but are mainly sustained by prey of local production. 相似文献

1. Fire retardants are composed of fertilising salts that are commonly used for fighting wildfires. These chemicals have various effects on individual arthropod species and aquatic communities. 2. This study investigated the effects of four treatments of a prevalent fire retardant [FR CROS 134 (FR), applied at concentrations of 0, 3.8 × 102, 7.6 × 102 and 11.4 × 102 mg litre−1] on oviposition habitat selection (OHS) by Culiseta longiareolata and Culex laticinctus mosquitoes in an outdoor mesocosm. Additionally, larval development of C. longiareolata was examined in response to this fire retardant. 3. The results demonstrate that OHS increased in both species, whereas survivorship (0–86.7%) and time to metamorphosis (5.4–23.1 days) of C. longiareolata were not affected by any of the treatments. However, cyanobacterial biomass increased and heterotrophic bacteria decreased in response to the addition of FR. 4. It was found that FR applications can have unintended consequences which can increase OHS by female mosquitoes. The growing use of fire retardants worldwide, and especially in Israel, justify evidence-based assessment and environmental management of their use. This study is a first critical step in filling the knowledge gap with respect to the impact of FR on aquatic ecosystems. 相似文献

Dominance of macrophytes and their response to environmental factors were studied in the river Ilm, Thuringia/ Germany with special reference to Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. Macroalgae showed a growth peak in spring with C. glomerata, Ulothrix zonata Kütz., Lemanea fluviatilis (L.) C. Agardh and Audouinella sp. being the dominant species. Shortly after this peak, a rapid decline of macrophyte substrate coverage was observed. Only C. glomerata revealed a second growth peak in late summer/early autumn. Frequent disturbances of the macrophyte assemblage by floods resulted repeatedly in an almost complete wash out of benthic organisms. After summer floods C. glomerata was the species that recolonized the substrate. At high‐light sites, faster recovery of C. glomerata was observed as compared to low‐light sites. This is discussed in relation to the life cycle of C. glomerata. Among the physical and chemical parameters that were analysed, irradiance, current velocity, pH, soluble reactive phosphorus and ammonia‐nitrogen accounted for most of the observed patterns of dominance of C. glomerata. 相似文献

Large numbers of hatchery-reared fish are released in stocking programmes; however, success is limited by high mortality. Predation is seen as the main cause of deaths but might be reduced by training fish before release to avoid predators and/or use refuge. In this study on a potential restocking species, yellowfin bream Acanthopagrus australis, the effects of predator training and refuge on the behaviour of fish in the hatchery were tested. In the first experiment, juvenile bream were exposed to predatory mangrove jack (Lutjanus argentimaculatus) fed exclusively on bream flesh while housed in tanks with and without refuge. Predator training altered fish behaviour when fish were re-exposed to predators, but the effects were subtle and varied between groups of fish. In contrast, refuge created strong and consistent changes in behaviour, significantly slowing down the amount of time that fish took to consume food. A second experiment focused on the effects of refuge. Bream were trained to use artificial seagrass or house bricks as refuge and then exposed to mangrove jacks in a laboratory predation experiment. When refuge was available, fish significantly slowed down their feeding rate. There was a small, transient increase in survival for fish given seagrass refuges, but this was irrespective of whether the bream were trained to use refuge. The results of this study indicate that the use of refuge may be innate and the benefits of refuge may be available to naive hatchery-reared fish or fish trained to use refuge shortly before release. This suggests that there is potential to improve post-release survival of fingerlings without time-consuming and expensive hatchery training. 相似文献

A large‐scale mesocosm was constructed and tested for its effectiveness for use in experiments on behaviour, reproduction and adult survivorship in the Afrotropical malaria vector Anopheles gambiae s.s. Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) in temperate climates. The large space (82.69 m3) allowed for semi‐natural experiments that increased demand on a mosquito's energetic reserves in an environment of widely distributed resources. A one‐piece prefabricated enclosure, made with white netting and vinyl, prevented the ingress of predators and the egress of mosquitoes. Daylight and white materials prompted the mosquitoes to seclude themselves in restricted daytime resting sites and allowed the easy collection of dead bodies so that daily mortality could be assessed accurately using a method that accounts for the loss of a proportion of bodies. Here, daily, age‐dependent mortality rates of males and females were estimated using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation. In overnight experiments, mosquitoes successfully located plants and took sugar meals. A 3‐week survival trial with a single cohort demonstrated successful mating, blood feeding, oviposition and long life. The relatively low cost of the mesocosm and the performance of the mosquitoes in it make it a viable option for any behavioural or ecological study of tropical mosquitoes in which space and seasonal cold are constraining factors. 相似文献

1. Habitat heterogeneity has important repercussions for species abundance, demography and life-history patterns. While habitat effects have been more thoroughly studied in top-down situations (e.g. in association with predation), their role in bottom-up situations (e.g. in association with food abundance) has been less explored and the underlying mechanism(s) behind the ecological patterns have not commonly been identified. 2. With material from 1993 to 2003, we test the hypothesis that the reproduction of Finnish northern goshawks Accipiter gentilis (L.) is bottom-up limited by habitat composition, especially in situations where the density of their main prey (grouse) is low. Special emphasis was placed on identifying the mechanism(s) behind potential habitat effects. 3. While laying date and large-scale variation in the main prey density (but not habitat composition) were related to the number of eggs goshawks laid, small-scale differences in alternative prey density between different territories later influenced how many young were fledged via the mechanism of habitat-dependent partial-brood loss. As a result of this mechanism, a difference in nestling condition also arose between goshawk territories with differing habitat compositions. 4. As the relative proportions of different landscape elements in a given landscape is a function of large-scale differences in geomorphology and land use, this means that the reproductive performance of goshawks as averaged over larger scales can be understood correctly only in respect to the fact that habitat gradients differ across landscapes. 5. In addition to being one of the first papers identifying the mechanism of partial brood loss as being primarily responsible for the habitat-specific differences in the production of young, this study further illustrates the need to identify small-scale mechanisms to correctly understand the large-scale patterns of reproductive performance in territorial species. The repercussions of the observed habitat effect for local population development are discussed. 相似文献

The timing of birth is often correlated with offspring fitness in animals, but experimental studies that disentangle direct effects of parturition date and indirect effects mediated via variation in female traits are rare. In viviparous ectotherms, parturition date is largely driven by female thermal conditions, particularly maternal basking strategies. Our field and laboratory studies of a viviparous lizard (Niveoscincus ocellatus) show that earlier‐born offspring are more likely to survive through their first winter and are larger following that winter, than are later‐born conspecifics. Thus, the association between parturition date and offspring fitness is causal, rather than reflecting an underlying correlation between parturition date and maternal attributes. Survival selection on offspring confers a significant advantage for increased maternal basking in this species, mediated through fitness advantages of earlier parturition. We discuss the roles of environmentally imposed constraints and parent–offspring conflict in the evolution of maternal effects on parturition date. 相似文献

Selectivity underlies the dissociation between seasonal prey availability and prey consumption in a generalist predator 下载免费PDF全文

Generalist predators are capable of selective foraging, but are predicted to feed in close proportion to prey availability to maximize energetic intake especially when overall prey availability is low. By extension, they are also expected to feed in a more frequency‐dependent manner during winter compared to the more favourable foraging conditions during spring, summer and fall seasons. For 18 months, we observed the foraging patterns of forest‐dwelling wolf spiders from the genus Schizocosa (Araneae: Lycosidae) using PCR‐based gut‐content analysis and simultaneously monitored the activity densities of two common prey: springtails (Collembola) and flies (Diptera). Rates of prey detection within spider guts relative to rates of prey collected in traps were estimated using Roualdes’ cst model and compared using various linear contrasts to make inferences pertaining to seasonal prey selectivity. Results indicated spiders foraged selectively over the course of the study, contrary to predictions derived from optimal foraging theory. Even during winter, with overall low prey densities, the relative rates of predation compared to available prey differed significantly over time and by prey group. Moreover, these spiders appeared to diversify their diets; the least abundant prey group was consistently overrepresented in the diet within a given season. We suggest that foraging in generalist predators is not necessarily restricted to frequency dependency during winter. In fact, foraging motives other than energy maximization, such as a more nutrient‐focused strategy, may also be optimal for generalist predators during prey‐scarce winters. 相似文献

Using lines artificially selected on egg size and being subjected to a restricted and an unrestricted feeding treatment, we examined the relationships between egg size, egg number, egg composition, and reproductive investment in the butterfly Bicyclus anynana . Despite a successful manipulation of egg size, correlated responses to selection in larval time, pupal mass, pupal time, longevity, fecundity, or the amount of energy allocated to reproduction were virtually absent. Thus, there was no indication for an evolutionary link between offspring size and reproductive investment. Egg composition, in contrast, was affected by selection, with larger eggs containing relatively more lipid and water, but less protein and energy compared to smaller eggs. Hence, females producing large eggs did not have to sacrifice fecundity due to adjustments in egg composition. Food limitation per se caused only minor changes in egg composition, and there was no general reduction in egg provisioning with female age. The latter was restricted to food-limited females, whereas egg quality remained remarkably similar throughout the females' life in control groups. We conclude that neglecting changes in biochemical egg composition, depending on genetic background, food availability, and female age, may introduce substantial error when estimating reproductive effort, and may ultimately lead to invalid conclusions. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 403–418. 相似文献

While movements of organisms have been studied across a myriad of environments, information is often lacking regarding spatio‐seasonal patterning in complex temperate coastal systems. Highly mobile fish form an integral part of marine food webs providing linkages within and among habitats, between patches of habitats, and at different life stages. We investigated how movement, activity, and connectivity patterns of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) are influenced by dynamic environmental conditions. Movement patterns of 39 juvenile and subadult Atlantic cod were assessed in two coastal sites in the Swedish Skagerrak for 5 months. We used passive acoustic telemetry and network analysis to assess seasonal and spatial movement patterns of cod and their relationships to different environmental factors, using statistical correlations, analysis of recurrent spatial motifs, and generalized linear mixed models. Temperature, in combination with physical barriers, precludes significant connectivity (complex motifs) within the system. Sea surface temperature had a strong influence on connectivity (node strength, degree, and motif frequency), where changes from warmer summer waters to colder winter waters significantly reduced movement activity of fish. As the seasons changed, movement of fish gradually decreased from large‐scale (km) linkages in the summer to more localized movement patterns in the winter (limited to 100s m). Certain localized areas, however, were identified as important for connectivity throughout the whole study period, likely due to these multiple‐habitat areas fulfilling functions required for foraging and shelter. This study provides new knowledge regarding inshore movement dynamics of juvenile and subadult Atlantic cod that use complex, coastal fjord systems. The findings show that connectivity, seasonal patterns in particular, should be carefully considered when selecting conservation areas to promote marine stewardship. 相似文献

Abstract: Extensive collections of Teretrius nigrescens in Mexico, Honduras, and Benin, were electrophoretically analysed to elucidate the prey spectrum of the predator. Both polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and cellulose acetate electrophoresis were used. Beetles were sampled with pheromone traps, using the synthetic aggregation pheromone of Prostephanus truncatus , and directly from farmers' maize stores. The proportion of electrophoretically detected prey protein from adult T. nigrescens in pheromone traps was low: of the 1108 specimens analysed, only in 34 cases, prey protein could be clearly identified. More frequently, prey protein was detected in adult T. nigrescens sampled in maize stores in Mexico, Honduras, and Benin, with 87 samples showing distinct prey bands of the total 1214 predators analysed. Of the 241 T. nigrescens larvae sampled in maize stores in Benin, 136 showed distinct bands of prey protein. In all samples, P. truncatus was the most frequently detected prey species. The second most often identified prey species was Sitophilus zeamais . The results are discussed with regard to various methods for prey spectrum analysis and specifically the biology of T. nigrescens . 相似文献

A simplified but highly effective approach for the post‐mortem evaluation of predation on several targeted members of an arthropod assemblage that does not require the development of pest‐specific enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (e.g. pest‐specific monoclonal antibodies) or PCR assays (DNA primers) is described. Laboratory feeding studies were conducted to determine if predation events could be detected from predators that consumed prey marked with foreign protein. I determined that large and small rabbit immunoglobulin G (IgG)‐marked prey can be detected by a rabbit‐IgG‐specific ELISA in the guts of chewing and piercing–sucking type predators. I then conducted multifaceted inclusion and exclusion field cage studies to qualify the degree of interguild and intraguild predation occurring among a complex arthropod assemblage during four separate light phase treatments. The field cages contained an arthropod assemblage consisting of 11 or 12 species of predaceous arthropods and three pest species. The three pests introduced into the cages included third instar Trichoplusia ni marked with rabbit IgG, third instar Lygus hesperus marked with chicken IgG and Pectinophora gossypiella sentinel egg masses. The inclusion cages allowed foraging fire ants, Solenopis xyloni, to freely enter the cages while the exclusion cages contained barriers that prevented ant entry. The results obtained using the conventional inclusion/exclusion field cage methodology revealed that there was substantial interguild and intraguild predation occurring on the majority of the arthropods in the assemblage, particularly in those cages that included ants. I then precisely identified which predators in the assemblage were feeding on the three targeted pests by conducting three post‐mortem gut content analyses on each individual predator (1503 individuals) in the assemblage. Specifically, P. gossypiella egg predation events were detected using an established P. gossypiella‐egg‐specific ELISA, and third instar T. ni and L. hesperus predation events were detected using rabbit‐IgG‐specific and chicken‐IgG‐specific ELISAs, respectively. Generally, the gut ELISAs revealed that Collops vittatus, Spanagonicus albofasciatus and Geocoris punctipes readily preyed on P. gossypiella eggs; Nabis alternatus, Zelus renardii and spiders (primarily Misumenops celer) readily preyed on marked L. hesperus nymphs, and spiders, S. albofasciatus and N. alternatus readily preyed on T. ni larvae. Furthermore, the cage methods and the post‐mortem predator gut ELISAs revealed very few distinctive patterns of predation with regard to the light cycle the assemblage was exposed to. 相似文献

This study investigated the feasibility of using an invasive snail, Pomacea canaliculata, as a food source and water purifier for the commercial breeding of the loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. The predatory potential of M. anguillicaudatus (3.5–5.5?g) against hatchling snails was evaluated in aquaria and simulated paddy fields. Some hatchling snails left the water to avoid being preyed upon by the loaches, and approximately 10 hatchlings died per day in the presence of five loaches in aquaria, whereas a weaker snail control effect was observed in the simulated paddy fields. The growth of rice seedlings (Oryza sativa) was not reduced by the presence of hatchling snails alone, but the shoot biomass of seedlings coexisting with snails was promoted after introducing the loaches. Additionally, the presence of P. canaliculata adults improved the aquatic environment in the short term for loach breeding by decreasing the turbidity of the water. Importantly, M. anguillicaudatus (12–18?g) mortality decreased and its weight increased in the presence of adult snails. 相似文献

The present study shows that the recently described mitochondrial H haplotype is associated with cytoplasmic male-sterility
(CMS). This new source of CMS appears to be different from the mitotype E-associated CMS most frequently found in natural
populations. A mitotype H progeny with a sexual phenotype segregation was used to identify a gene restoring male fertility
(R1H ). Using bulk segregant analysis (BSA), nine RAPD markers linked to this restorer locus were detected and mapped. The comparison
with other Beta genetic maps shows that the closest RAPD marker, distant from R1H by 5.2 cM, belongs to the same linkage group as the monogermy locus. In order to determine the position of R1H more precisely, four RFLP loci within this linkage group were mapped in the segregating progeny. It thus became possible
to construct a linkage map of the region containing the RFLP, RAPD and R1H loci. The closest RFLP marker was located 1.7 cM away from R1H. However, a nuclear gene restoring the ‘Owen’ CMS which is currently used in sugar beet breeding is reportedly linked to
the monogermy locus, raising the question of a possible identity between the new CMS system and the ‘Owen’ CMS.

Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA), an important active compound in treating focal cardiac and cerebral ischemia, is uniquely
present in flower petals of Carthamus tinctorius. In this study, inheritance and molecular marker analyses for HSYA trait in safflower were carried out. HSYA contents in parents,
cross hybridized F1 and F2 individuals were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. Results revealed that the presence/absence of HSYA was
controlled by one major nuclear gene termed HSya. A total of 48 AFLP primer combinations were screened, and bulked segregant analysis was performed by preparing two pools
of 10 present-HSYA and ten absent-HSYA plants selected from the 498 individuals of the F2 segregating population. Four AFLP markers, AFLP-5, AFLP-7, AFLP-15 and AFLP-16, were identified to be closely associated
with HSya. Of those, AFLP-16 was the closest to HSya, estimated at about 9.4 cM in genetic distance. The dominant AFLP-16 marker was converted into a simple sequence characterized
amplified region marker based on the sequence information of the cloned flanking regions of the AFLP fragment and was designated
as SCM16. Our result has direct application for marker-assisted selection of quality breeding in safflower. 相似文献
