Nitrate influx, efflux and net nitrate uptake were measured for the slow-growing Quercus suber L. (cork-oak) to estimate the N-uptake efficiency of its seedlings when grown with free access to nitrate. We hypothesise that nitrate influx, an energetically costly process, is not very efficiently controlled so as to avoid losses through efflux, because Q. suber has relatively high respiratory costs for ion uptake. Q. suber seedlings were grown in a growth room in hydroponics with 1 mM NO3 -. Seedlings were labelled with 15NO3 - in nutrient solution for 5 min to measure influx and for 2 h for net uptake. Efflux was calculated as the difference between influx and net uptake. Measurements were made in the morning, afternoon and night. The site of nitrate reduction was estimated from the ratio of NO3 - to amino acids in the xylem sap; the observed ratio indicated that nitrate reduction occurred predominantly in the roots. Nitrate influx was always much higher than net acquisition and both tended to be lower at night. High efflux occurred both during the day and at night, although the proportion of 15NO3 - taken up that was loss through efflux was proportionally higher during the night. Efflux was a significant fraction of influx. We concluded that the acquisition system is energetically inefficient under the conditions tested. The processes of NO3 uptake and transport and the effectsof NH4+ or L-glutamate on these processes were investigatedwith excised non-mycorrhizal beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) roots.NO3 net uptake followed uniphasic Michaelis-Menten kineticsin a concentration range of 10µM to 1 mM with an apparentKm of 9.2 µM and a Vmax of 366 nmol g–1 FW h–1.NH4+, when present in excess to NO3, or 10 mM L-glutamateinhibited the net uptake of NO3 Apparently, part of NO3taken up was loaded into the xylem. Relative xylem loading ofNO3 ranged from 3.21.6 to 6.45.1% of NO3 netuptake. It was not affected by treatment with NH4+ or L-glutamate.16N/13N double labelling experiments showed that NO3efflux from roots increased with increasing influx of NO3and, therefore, declined if influx was reduced by NH4+ or L-glutamateexposure. From these results it is concluded that NO3net uptake by non-mycorrhizal beech roots is reduced by NH4+or L-glutamate at the level of influx and not at the level ofefflux. Growth, chemical composition, and nitrate reductase activity (NRA) of hydroponically cultured Rumex crispus, R. palustris, R. acetosa, and R. maritimus were studied in relation to form (NH4 +, NO3 -, or both) and level of N supply (4 mM N, and zero-N following a period of 4mM N). A distinct preference for either NH4 + or NO3 - could not be established. All species were characterized by a very efficient uptake and utilization of N, irrespective of N source, as evident from high concentrations of organic N in the tissues and concurrent excessive accumulations of free NO3 - and free NH4 +. Especially the accumulation of free NH4 + was unusually large. Generally, relative growth rate (RGR) was highest with a combination of NH4 + and NO3 -. Compared to mixed N supply, RGR of NO3 -- and NH4 +-grown plants declined on average 3% and 9%, respectively. Lowest RGR with NH4 + supply probably resulted from direct or indirect toxicity effects associated with high NH4 + and/or low Ca2+ contents of tissues. NRA in NO3 - and NH4NO3 plants was very similar with maxima in the leaves of ca 40 μmol NO2 - g-1 DW h-1. ‘Basal’ NRA levels in shoot tissues of NH4 + plants appeared relatively high with maxima in the leaves of ca 20 μmol NO2 - g-1 DW h-1. Carboxylate to organic N ratios, (C-A)/Norg, on a whole plant basis varied from 0.2 in NH4 + plants to 0.9 in NO3 - plants. After withdrawal of N, all accumulated NO3 - and NH4 + was assimilated into organic N and the organic N redistributed on a large scale. NRA rapidly declined to similar low levels, irrespective of previous N source. Shoot/root ratios of -N plants were 50–80% lower than those from +N plants. In comparison with +N, RGR of -N plants did not decline to a large extent, decreasing by only 15% in -NH4 + plants due to very high initial organic-N contents. N-deprived plants all exhibited an excess cation over anion uptake (net proton efflux), and whole-plant (C-A)/Norg ratios increased to values around unity. Possible difficulties in interpreting the (C-A)/Norg ratio and NRA of plants in their natural habitats are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The modelling of ion uptake by plants requires the measurement of kinetic and growth parameters under specific conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of nine NH inf4 sup+ :NO inf3 sup− ratios on onions (Allium cepa L.). Twenty-eight to 84 day-old onion plants were treated with NH inf4 sup+ :NOf3/sup− ratios ranging from 0 to 100% of each ionic species in one mM solutions in a growth chamber. Maximum N influx (Imax) was assessed using the N depletion method. Except at an early stage, ionic species did not influence significantly Imax, the Michaelis constant (Km) and the minimum concentration for net uptake (Cmin). Imax for ammonium decreased from 101 to 59 pmole cm-2 s-1 while Imax for nitrate increased from 26 to 54 pmole cm-2 s-1 as the plant matured. On average, Km and Cmin values were 14.29 μM, and 5.06 μM for ammonium, and 11.90 μM and 4.54 μM for nitrate, respectively. In general, the effect of NH4 +:NO3 - ratios on root weight, shoot weight and total weight depended on plant age. At an early stage, maximum plant growth and N uptake were obtained with ammonium as the sole source of N. At later stages, maximum plant growth and N uptake were obtained as the proportion of nitrate increased in the nutrient solution. The was no apparent nutrient deficiency whatever NH4 +:NO3 - ratio was applied, although ammonium reduced the uptake of cations and increased the uptake of phosphorus. The kinetics of NH4 + and NO3 uptake in young Douglas fir trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) were studied in solutions, containing either one or both N species. Using solutions containing a single N species, the Vmax of NH4 + uptake was higher than that of NO3 uptake. The Km of NH4 + uptake and Km of NO3 uptake differed not significantly. When both NH4 + and NO3 were present, the Vmax for NH4 + uptake became slightly higher, and the Km for NH4 + uptake remained in the same order. Under these conditions the NO3 uptake was almost totally inhibited over the whole range of concentrations used (10–1000 μM total N). This inhibition by NH4 + occurred during the first two hours after addition. ei]{gnA C}{fnBorstlap}  相似文献

Oxygen and CO2 fluxes were measured in hydroponically grown mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal Triticum aestivum L. cv. Hano roots. The NO3 uptake of the plants was used to estimate the amount of root respiration attributable to ion uptake. Plants were grown at 4 mM N and 10 μM P, where a total and viable mycorrhizal root colonisation of 48% and 18%, respectively, by Glomus mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe (BEG 107) was observed. The O2 consumption and NO3 uptake rates were similar and the CO2 release was higher in mycorrhizal than in non-mycorrhizal wheat. This resulted in a significantly higher respiratory quotient (RQ, mol CO2 mol–1 O2) in mycorrhizal (1.27±0.13) than in non-mycorrhizal (0.79±0.05) wheat. As the biomass and N and P concentrations in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal wheat were the same, the higher RQ resulted from the mycorrhizal colonisation and not differences in nutrition per se. Summary The proliferation and survival of avocado nodal cultures of juvenile origin were affected by the form and concentration of nitrogen. Optimum growth was achieved on modified Murashige and Skoog medium containing 67% KNO3 and 33% NH4NO3 with total N of 40 mM supplemented with 100 mg l−1 myo-inositol, 1 mg l−1 thiamine HCl, 30 g l−1 sucrose, and 4.44 μM BA with a 16-h photoperiod (120–150 μmol m−2 s−1). Proliferating shoots and plantlets were photosynthetically active. Better shoot growth and accumulation of higher biomass occurred in a CO2-enriched environment than under ambient CO2 conditions. CO2 assimilation efficiency, however, was higher under the latter conditions than in a CO2-enhanced environment, e.g., 31±7 and 17±2 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1, respectively. The net CO2 assimilation rates of in vitro grown plantlets were comparable to those of seedlings ex vitro.  相似文献

Influx, efflux and net uptake of NO 3 was studied in Pisum sativum L. cv. Marma in short-term experiments where 13NO 3 was used to trace influx. The influx rate in N-limited plants was similar both during net uptake at external concentrations of around 50 M, and at low external NO 3 concentrations (4–6 M) when net uptake was practically zero. Efflux could be inferred from discrepancies between influx and net uptake but was never very high in the N-limited plants during net uptake. Close to the threshold concentration for not NO 3 uptake, efflux was high and equalled influx. Thus, the threshold concentration can be regarded as a NO 3 compensation point. The inclusion of NH 4 + in the outer medium decreased influx by about 40% but did not significantly affect efflux. The roles of NO 3 fluxes and nitrate-reductase activity in regulating/limiting NO 3 utilization are discussed.Abbreviations DW dry weight - FW fresh weight - RN relative nitrogen addition rate  相似文献

In this paper we address the question why slow-growing grass species appear to take up nitrate with greater respiratory costs than do fast-growing grasses when all plants are grown with free access to nutrients. Specific costs for nitrate transport, expressed as moles of ATP per net mole of nitrate taken up, were 1.5 to 4 times higher in slow-growing grasses than in fast-growing ones (Scheurwater et al., 1998, Plant, Cell & Environ. 21, 995–1005). The net rate of nitrate uptake is determined by two opposing nitrate fluxes across the plasma membrane: influx and efflux. To test whether differences in specific costs for nitrate transport are due to differences in the ratio of nitrate influx to net rate of nitrate uptake, nitrate influx and the net rate of nitrate uptake were measured in the roots of two fast-growing ( Dactylis glomerata L. and Holcus lanatus L.) and two slow-growing (Deschampsia flexuosa L. and Festuca ovina L.) grass species at four points during the diurnal cycle, using 15NO3 -. Efflux was calculated by subtraction of net uptake from influx; it was assumed that efflux of nitrogen represents the flux of nitrate. Transfer of the plants to the solution containing the labelled nitrate did not significantly affect nitrate uptake in the present grass species. The net rate of nitrate uptake was highest during the middle of the light period in all species. Diurnal variation in the net rate of nitrate uptake was mostly due to variation in nitrate influx. Variation in nitrate efflux did not occur in all species, but efflux per net mole of nitrate taken up was higher during darkness than in the light in the slow-growing grasses. The two fast-growing species, however, did not show diurnal variation in the ratio of efflux to net nitrate uptake. Integrated over 24 hours, the slow-growing grasses clearly exhibited higher ratios of influx to net uptake than the fast-growing grass species. Our results indicate that the higher ratio of nitrate influx to net nitrate uptake can account for higher specific costs for nitrate transport in slow-growing grass species compared with those in their fast-growing counterparts, possibly in combination with greater activity of the non-phosphorylating alternative respiratory path. Therefore, under our experimental conditions with plants grown at a non-limiting nitrate supply, nitrate uptake is less efficient (from the point of ATP consumption) in slow-growing grasses than in fast-growing grass species. The effect of copper on the uptake of nitrogen and the tissue contents of inorganic nitrogen, amino acids and proteins were studied in cooper-sensitive Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke, grown at different nitrogen sources (NH4 + or NO3 -). All the toxic copper levels tested, i.e. 4, 8, 16 M Cu2+, strongly inhibited the uptake of nitrogen, especially of NO3 -, and decreased the content of NO3 -, amino acids and proteins. Especially at 4 and 8 M Cu2+, NH4 + accumulated in the plants, suggesting that the conversion of NH4 - into amino acids was inhibited.  相似文献

Summary A simple and efficient micropropagation method was established for direct protocorm-like body (PLB) formation and plant regeneration from flower stalk internodes of a sympodial orchid, Epidendrum radicans. Small transparent tissues formed on surfaces and cut ends of flower stalk internodes on a modified half-strength Murashige and Skoog basal medium with or without thidiazuron (TDZ) after 1–2 wk of culture. In the light, the transparent tissues enlarged and turned into organized calluses on most of the explants. However, PLBs formed only on a medium supplemened with 0.45 μM TDZ within 2 mo. of culture. Sucrose, NH4NO3, and KNO3 were used in media to test their effects on PLB proliferation and shooting. The best response on number of PLBs per tube was 23.6 at 40 gl−1 sucrose, 825 mgl−1 NH4NO3, and 950 mgl−1 KNO3, and the highest number of PLBs with shoots was found at 10 gl−1 sucrose, 825 mgl−1 NH4NO3, and 950 mgl−1 KNO3. Homogenized PLB tissues produced by blending were used to test the effects of four cytokinins [TDZ, N6-benzyladenine (BA), zeatin-riboside, and kinetin] on PLB proliferation and shoot formation. The best responses on number of PLBs per tube, proliferation rate, and number of PLBs with shoots per tube were obtained at 4.44 μM BA, 0.28 μM zeatin-riboside, and 1.39 μM kinetin, respectively. Normal plantlets converted from PLBs on the same TDZ-containing medium after 1 mo. of culture. The optimized procedure required about 12–13 wk from the initiation of PLBs to plantlet formation. The regenerated plants grew well with an almost 100% survival rate when acclimatized in a greenhouse.  相似文献

The effect of amino acids on nitrate transport was studied in Zea mays cell suspension cultures and in Zea mays excised roots. The inclusion of aspartic acid, arginine, glutamine and glycine (15mM total amino acids) in a complete cell-culture media containing 1.0 mM NO3 - strongly inhibited nitrate uptake and the induction of accelerated uptake rates. The nitrate uptake rate increased sharply once solution amino acid levels fell below detection limits. Glutamine alone inhibited induction in the cell suspension culture. Maize seedlings germinated and grown for 7 days in a 15 mM mixture of amino acids also had lower nitrate uptake rates than seedlings grown in 0.5 mM Ca(NO3)2 or 1 mM CaCl2. As amino acids are the end product of nitrate assimilation, the results suggest an end-product feed-back mechanism for the regulation of nitrate uptake.  相似文献

Summary Relationships between root zone temperature, concentrations and uptake rates of NH 4 + and NO 3 were studied in non-mycorrhizal roots of 4-year-old Norway spruce under controlled environmental conditions. Additionally, in a forest stand NH 4 + and NO 3 uptake rates along the root axis and changes in the rhizosphere pH were measured. In the concentration (Cmin) range of 100–150 M uptake rates of NH 4 + were 3–4 times higher than those of NO 3 The preference for NH 4 + uptake was also reflected in the minimum concentration (Cmin) values. Supplying NH4NO3, the rate of NO 3 uptake was very low until the NH 4 + concentrations had fallen below about 100 M. The shift from NH 4 + to NO 3 uptake was correlated with a corresponding shift from net H+ production to net H+ consumption in the external solution. The uptake rates of NH 4 + were correlated with equimolar net production of H+. With NO 3 nutrition net consumption of H+ was approximately twice as high as uptake rates of NO 3 In the forest stand the NO 3 concentration in the soil solution was more than 10 times higher than the NH 4 + concentration (<100 M), and the rhizosphere pH of non-mycorrhizal roots considerably higher than the bulk soil pH. The rhizosphere pH increase was particularly evident in apical root zones where the rates of water and NO 3 uptake and nitrate reductase activity were also higher. The results are summarized in a model of water and nutrient transport to, and uptake by, non-mycorrhizal roots of Norway spruce in a forest stand. Model calculations indicate that delivery to the roots by mass flow may meet most of the plant demand of nitrogen and calcium, and that non-mycorrhizal root tips have the potential to take up most of the delivered nitrate and calcium.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen form and phosphorus source on the growth, nutrient uptake and rhizosphere soil property of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) were investigated in a pot experiment. The experiment was performed with a compartmental cropping device, which enables the collection of rhizosphere soil at defined distances from the root of tea plant. Nitrogen was supplied as nitrate or ammonium in combination with soluble phosphorus as Ca(H2PO4)2 or insoluble P as rock phosphate. The leaf dry matter production of tea was significantly greater in the treatments with NH4 + than NO3 -, whereas dry matter production of root and stem was not significantly affected. Addition of phosphorus as either source did not influence the dry matter production. The concentrations of K in root, Mg and Ca in both the shoot and root supplied with NO3 - were significantly higher than in NH4 + and influence of P sources was minor. On the contrary, Al and Mn concentrations were significantly larger in NH4 --fed plants which could be attributed to remarkably increased availability of Al and Mn caused by acidification of the rhizosphere soil (the first 1-mm soil section from the root surface) with NH4–N nutrition. The concentration of N in shoot was also significantly higher in NH4- than in NO3-fed plants, indicating higher use efficiency of NH4–N. Whatever the phosphate source, rhizosphere pH declined in ammonium compared to in nitrate treatment. The pH decrease was much larger when no P or soluble P were applied and reached 0.85–1.30 units which extended to 3–5 mm away from the root surface. Exchangeable acidity, content of exchangeable Al and Mn were also considerably higher in the rhizosphere soils of NH4 + fed tea plants. Significant amounts of P dissolved from rock phosphate accumulated in rhizosphere of NH4 +, not NO3 -, suggesting that the dissolution of rock phosphate was induced by the proton excreted by tea root fed with ammonium. With soluble P addition, shoot and root P concentrations were greater in NH4 + than in NO3 - treatment and it appeared that this difference could not be sufficiently explained by the available P content in soil which was only slightly higher in NH4 + treatment. With rock phosphate addition, the shoot and root P concentrations were hardly affected by nitrogen form, although the available P content was much higher and accumulated in the rhizosphere soil supplied with ammonium. The reason for this was discussed with regard to the inter-relationship of Al with P uptake. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effect of varied Zn supply on the pH of the nutrient solution and uptake of cations and anions was studied in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) plants grown under controlled environmental conditions in nutrient solutions with nitrate as source of nitrogen. With the appearance of visual Zn deficiency symtoms, the pH of the nutrient solutions decreased from 6 to about 5 whereas the pH increased to about 7 when the plants were adequately supplied with Zn. In Zn deficient plants the pH decrease was associated with a shift in the cation-anion uptake ratio in favour of cation uptake. Of the major ions, uptake of Ca2+ and K+ was either not affected or only slightly lowered whereas NO3 - uptake was drastically decreased in Zn deficient plants. Although the Zn nutritional status of plants hardly affected the NO3 - concentrations in the plants, the leakage of NO3 - from roots of Zn deficient plants into a diluted CaCl2 solution was nearly 10 times higher than that of plants adequately supplied with Zn. In contrast to Zn deficiency, Mn deficiency in cotton plants neither affected NO3 - uptake nor the pH of the nutrient solution. The results indicate that, probably as a consequence of the role of Zn in plasma membrane integrity and nitrogen metabolism, when Zn is deficient in dicotyledonous species net uptake of NO3 - is particularly depressed which in turn results in an increase in cation-anion uptake ratio and a corresponding decrease in external pH. The ecological relevance of this rhizosphere acidification is discussed.  相似文献

A microprocessor controlled apparatus is described which can measure, control and record nitrate uptake byLolium perenne in nutrient solution, comparing seven selection lines in duplicate. Nutrient solution flowed at 1 min−1, and linear response was found from 10−1 to 10−4 M NO 3 . Uptake rates for Lolium were between 10−5 and 10−4 M NO 3 , plant−1, h−1, which agreed with previous, manually determined, rates, ‘Overshoot’ in nitrate dosing, which was a problem with manual systems, was eliminated. Nitrate concentration was controlled (±3%) in modified Hoagland’s solution.  相似文献

Miniature heat balance-sap flow gauges were used to measure water flows in small-diameter roots (3–4 mm) in the undisturbed soil of a mature beech–oak–spruce mixed stand. By relating sap flow to the surface area of all branch fine roots distal to the gauge, we were able to calculate real time water uptake rates per root surface area (Js) for individual fine root systems of 0.5–1.0 m in length. Study aims were (i) to quantify root water uptake of mature trees under field conditions with respect to average rates, and diurnal and seasonal changes of Js, and (ii) to investigate the relationship between uptake and soil moisture θ, atmospheric saturation deficit D, and radiation I. On most days, water uptake followed the diurnal course of D with a mid-day peak and low night flow. Neighbouring roots of the same species differed up to 10-fold in their daily totals of Js (<100–2000 g m−2 d−1) indicating a large spatial heterogeneity in uptake. Beech, oak and spruce roots revealed different seasonal patterns of water uptake although they were extracting water from the same soil volume. Multiple regression analyses on the influence of D, I and θ on root water uptake showed that D was the single most influential environmental factor in beech and oak (variable selection in 77% and 79% of the investigated roots), whereas D was less important in spruce roots (50% variable selection). A comparison of root water uptake with synchronous leaf transpiration (porometer data) indicated that average water fluxes per surface area in the beech and oak trees were about 2.5 and 5.5 times smaller on the uptake side (roots) than on the loss side (leaves) given that all branch roots <2 mm were equally participating in uptake. Beech fine roots showed maximal uptake rates on mid-summer days in the range of 48–205 g m−2 h−1 (i.e. 0.7–3.2 mmol m−2 s−1), oak of 12–160 g m−2 h−1 (0.2–2.5 mmol m−2 s−1). Maximal transpiration rates ranged from 3 to 5 and from 5 to 6 mmol m−2 s−1 for sun canopy leaves of beech and oak, respectively. We conclude that instantaneous rates of root water uptake in beech, oak and spruce trees are above all controlled by atmospheric factors. The effects of different root conductivities, soil moisture, and soil hydraulic properties become increasingly important if time spans longer than a week are considered.  相似文献

The uptake and bioavailability of lead (Pb) in soil–plant systems remain poorly understood. This study indicates that acetic and malic acids enhance the uptake of Pb by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots under hydroponic conditions. The net concentration-dependent uptake influx of Pb in the presence and absence of organic acids was characterized by Michaelis–Menten type nonsaturating kinetic curves that could be resolved into linear and saturable components. Fitted maximum uptake rates (V max) of the Michaelis–Menton saturable component in the presence of acetic and malic acids were, respectively, 2.45 and 1.63 times those of the control, while the Michaelis–Menten K m values of 5.5, 3.7 and 2.2 μM, respectively, remained unchanged. Enhanced Pb uptake by organic acids was partially mediated by Ca2+ and K+ channels, and also depended upon the physiological function of the plasma membrane P-type ATPase. Uptake may have been further enhanced by an effectively thinner unstirred layer of Pb adjacent to the roots, leading to more rapid diffusion towards roots. X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies provided evidence that the coordination environment of Pb in wheat roots was similar to that of Pb(CH3COO)2·3H2O in that one Pb atom was coordinated to four oxygen atoms via the carboxylate group.  相似文献

A study was conducted to examine aluminum (Al) exclusion by roots of two differentially tolerant soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) lines, Pl-416937 (Al-tolerant) and Essex (Al-sensitive). Following exposure to 80μM Al for up to 2 h, roots were rinsed with a 10 mM potassium citrate solution and rapidly dissected to allow estimation of intracellular Al accumulation in morphologically distinct root regions. Using 10 min exposures to 300μM 15NO3 and dissection, accompanying effects on NO3 uptake were measured. With Al exposures of 20 min or 2 h, there was greater Al accumulation in all root regions of Essex than in those of Pl-416937. The genotypic difference in Al accumulation was particularly apparent at the root apex, both in the tip and in the adjacent root cap and mucilage. Exposure of roots to Al inhibited the uptake of 15NO3 to a similar extent in all root regions. The results are consistent with Al exclusion from cells in the root apical region being an important mechanism of Al tolerance.  相似文献

We investigated whether six arctic plant species have the potential to induce nitrate reductase (NR) activity when exposed to NO3 --nitrogen under controlled environment conditions, using an in vivo assay that uses the rate of NO2 --accumulation to estimate potential NR activity. We also assessed the effect of low root temperatures on NR activity, growth and nitrogen uptake (using 15N applications) in two of the selected species. Five of the six species (Cerastium alpinum, Dryas intergrifolia, Oxyria digyna, Saxifraga cernua and Salix arctica) were capable of inducing NR activity when exposed to solutions containing 0.5 mM NO3 - at 20°C for 10 days. Although in vivo NR activity was not induced in Saxifraga oppositifolia under controlled conditions, we conclude that it was capable of growing successfully on NO3 -, due to the presence of moderate rates of NR activity observed in both NH4 +-grown and NO3 --treated plants. Exposure of O. digyna and D. integrifolia to 3°C root temperatures for two weeks, with the shoots kept at 20°C, resulted in root and leaf NR activity rates of NO3 --treated plants being reduced to rates exhibited by NH4 +-grown plants. Although these decreases in NR in both species appeared to be due to limitations in NO3 --uptake and growth rate (rather than direct low-temperature inhibition of NR synthesis per se), direct low-temperature inhibition of root NR synthesis could not be ruled out. In contrast to the temperature insensitivity of NH4 + uptake in D. integrifolia, NO3 --uptake in D. integrifolia was inhibited by low root temperatures. We conclude that the selected arctic species have the genetic potential to utilize NO3 --nitrogen, and that low root temperatures, in conjunction with other environmental limitations, may be responsible for the lack of induction of NR in D. integrifolia and Salix arctica under field conditions.  相似文献
