Little is known about the relationship between feed intake behaviour and cholesterol levels in humans. This can be attributed to the fact that feed intake behaviour in humans is difficult to assess. The relationships between feed intake, feed efficiency and feed intake behaviour, and cholesterol and triglyceride levels were investigated at an average age of 187 days, in a pig model consisting of 202 Duroc barrows. Feed intake and feed intake behaviour were recorded individually and daily by means of an electronic identification system. Animals with high levels of total cholesterol also had high levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. Animals with high levels of HDL also had high levels of LDL and triglycerides, and animals with high levels of LDL also had high levels of triglycerides. Animals with higher BW, higher backfat thickness, higher BW gain, higher gain of backfat deposition, higher feed intake, higher residual feed intake (RFI) and higher feed intake rate had higher levels of total, HDL and LDL plasma cholesterol. Results indicate that the relationship between feed intake and cholesterol levels is a long-term relationship, while the relationship between RFI and cholesterol levels is more of a short-term nature. The relationship between intake rate and cholesterol plasma levels disappeared after correction for the amount of feed consumed. Results indicate that feed intake independent of metabolic BW, growth and fatness, i.e. 'RFI', was positively correlated with cholesterol plasma levels. This suggests that eating food over and above the maintenance and growth requirements constitutes a health risk independent of the level of fatness.  相似文献

1. Many previous experiments on cold acclimation in frogs were carried out on animals maintained in total darkness. I tested the effect of photoperiod on changes in plasma FFA, glucose, and cholesterol during cold acclimation. 2. Hematocrit levels were lower whereas plasma FFA levels were higher in frogs kept in total darkness during cold acclimation. 3. To determine the efficacy and underlying mechanism of Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) on plasma lipids in hypercholesterolemia hamsters. The effect of APS (0.25 g/kg/d) on plasma and liver lipids, fecal bile acids and neutral sterol, cholesterol absorption and synthesis, HMG-CoA reductase activity, and gene and protein expressions in the liver and small intestine was investigated in twenty-four hypercholesterolemia hamsters. Treatment periods lasted for three months. APS significantly lowered plasma total cholesterol by 45.8%, triglycerides by 30%, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol by 47.4%, comparable to simvastatin. Further examinations revealed that APS reduced total cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver, increased fecal bile acid and neutral sterol excretion, inhibited cholesterol absorption, and by contrast, increased hepatic cholesterol synthesis and HMG-CoA reductase activity. Plasma total cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were significantly correlated with cholesterol absorption rates. APS up-regulated cholesterol-7α-hydroxylase and LDL-receptor gene expressions. These new findings identify APS as a potential natural cholesterol lowering agent, working through mechanisms distinct from statins.  相似文献

A total of 39 postmenopausal women 40–70 years of age and undergoing hormone replacement therapy participated in a 6-month weight reduction program, which consisted of a low calorie diet (5040 KJ/day) and phentermine hydrochloride therapy. Subjects had an average body mass index of 35.95±5.32 kg/m2 and 42.20±11.0 kg of total fat. Body mass index, plasma lipids, total and trunk fat, and plasma apoproteins were measured at baseline and after 3 and 6 months of the weight reduction program. Subjects experienced an overall 10% weight loss during the treatment period (P<0.001). Plasma LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were reduced by 18% and 15% (P<0.01) respectively, whereas HDL cholesterol was increased by 9% (P<0.01) over the 6-month period. Plasma apoproteins were significantly affected by weight loss. Plasma apolipoprotein (apo) B concentrations were reduced 6.5% (P<0.01), and apo C-III and apo E were reduced by 9% over 6 months (P<0.01). The observed decreases in plasma apo B were significantly correlated with the observed changes in plasma cholesterol (r=0.356, P<0.01) over 3 months. In addition, changes in plasma triglycerides were correlated with changes in both apo C-III (r=0.436) and apo E (r=0.354) over 6 months. These results suggest that weight loss may have multifactorial effects on lipoprotein metabolism, resulting in better plasma lipid and apoprotein profiles.  相似文献

Results show that bromocriptine induced marked alterations in plasma levels of cholesterol and lipids in response to acute and chronic administrations in rats. Two hours after an I.P. dose of 10 mg/kg, bromocriptine mesylate caused significant reductions in plasma levels of total high density lipoprotein (HDL) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol). At a dose of 20 mg/kg, bromocriptine mesylate induced significant elevations in plasma levels of total cholesterol, total HDL, HDL cholesterol, total low density lipoproteins (LDL), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol). Injected at a dose of 4 or 10 mg/kg daily for 14 consecutive days, bromocriptine mesylate caused significant increases in plasma levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and total LDL whereas the levels of HDL cholesterol, total HDL triglycerides (TG) were reduced. At a dose of 20 mg/kg all parameters were significantly increased. Marked hyperglycaemia was noticed in response to doses of 10, 15 and 20 mg/kg injected daily for 14 consecutive days or 2 hrs after a single administration of 15 mg/kg. Plasma insulin activity was reduced 2 hours after injection of bromocriptine at a dose of 15 mg/kg Likewise, a significant reduction in plasma insulin activity was observed in response to daily I.P. injections of bromocriptine at a dose of 15 mg/kg. Hyperglycaemic and hypoinsulinaemic effects of bromocriptine (acute and chronic) were markedly decreased when sulpiride, a dopaminergic D2 antagonist, was injected at an I.P. dose of 10 mg/kg before bromocriptine. Plasma ACTH activity was significantly increased in response to bromocriptine (15 mg/kg I.P.) in acute and chronic experiments. This effect was markedly diminished when sulpiride was injected prior to bromocriptine. In conclusion, bromocriptine induced marked elevations in plasma levels of total cholesterol and lipids which are likely to be related to hyperglycaemic and hypoinsulinaemic effects.  相似文献

1. The effects of orally administered ciclosporin (40, 50 or 80 mg/kg body wt) on plasma magnesium, albumin, total cholesterol and triglycerides have been studied in male Wistar rats. 2. Plasma magnesium and albumin were significantly lower in rats dosed with ciclosporin (40, 50 or 80 mg/kg) after 14 days. 3. Variable changes of plasma cholesterol and triglycerides were observed. Hibernating mammals cease feeding during the winter and rely primarily on stored lipids to fuel alternating periods of torpor and arousal. How hibernators manage large fluxes of lipids and sterols over the annual hibernation cycle is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate lipid and cholesterol transport and storage in ground squirrels studied in spring, summer, and several hibernation states. Cholesterol levels in total plasma, HDL and LDL particles were elevated in hibernators compared with spring or summer squirrels. Hibernation increased plasma apolipoprotein A-I expression and HDL particle size. Expression of cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase was 13-fold lower in hibernators than in active season squirrels. Plasma triglycerides were reduced by fasting in spring but not summer squirrels. In hibernators plasma β-hydroxybutyrate was elevated during torpor whereas triglycerides were low relative to normothermic states. We conclude that the switch to a lipid-based metabolism during winter, coupled with reduced capacity to excrete cholesterol creates a closed system in which efficient use of lipoproteins is essential for survival.  相似文献

Chronic exposure of female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) for 9 weeks to a short photoperiod (10L:14D) depressed the pituitary-thyroid axis as indicated by a drop in circulating titers of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and the free thyroxine index (FT4I) compared to animals maintained under long photoperiodic conditions (14L:10D). 2. Short day treatment also reduced plasma cholesterol levels. 3. An analysis of plasma lipids and lipoprotein fractions was performed over the course of the annual ovarian cycle of the female turtle, Chrysemys picta. Determinations of total plasma triglycerides, cholesterol, vitellogenin and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) were made. The lipid and protein composition of the lipoprotein fractions [very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and very high density lipoprotein (VHDL)] were also observed over the same period. Plasma triglyceride and vitellogenin levels were significantly increased in the spring preovulatory period and fall recrudescent phase. Total plasma cholesterol levels were significantly elevated only at the onset of the fall recrudescent phase and apoA-I levels were highest during the postoviposition/ovarian arrest phase. The triglyceride content of VLDL was highest in preovulatory animals and there were apparent seasonal changes in the expression of apoA-I and apoE of HDL/VHDL. We conclude that the coordinate regulation of lipids and protein contributes to seasonal ovarian growth and clearance of lipids from plasma, both of which are most likely under hormonal control.  相似文献

Plasma glycosaminoglycans and lipids have been measured in the plasma of 92 fasted males and females. In the males, glycosaminoglycans correlated significantly with age (r = 0.39), triglycerides (r = 0.44), and cholesterol (r = 0.30). When the effect of age was allowed for, the significance of the correlation between glycosaminoglycans and triglycerides was maintained (r = 0.36). Glycosaminoglycan levels are higher in females than in males. The correlation of glycosaminoglycans with age in women was only marginally significant. In both men and women the effect of age is attributable principally to an increase in glycosaminoglycan concentration in those over 54 years. The only lipid fraction correlating with glycosaminoglycans in females was VLDL cholesterol (r = 0.34) and by stepwise linear regression allowing for the effect of age, this significance was retained (beta = 0.34).  相似文献

The effects of daily supplemental chromium (200 μg) complexed with 1.8 mg nicotinic acid on plasma glucose and lipids, including total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, were assessed in 14 healthy adults and 5 adults with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) using a double-blind crossover study with 8-wk experimental periods. Eight of the 14 healthy subjects and all 5 subjects with NIDDM also underwent an oral glucose tolerance test with assessment of 90 min postprandial plasma glucose and insulin concentrations. No statistically significant effects of chromium nicotinic acid supplementation were found on plasma insulin, glucose, or lipid concentrations, although chromium nicotinic acid supplementation slightly lowered fasting plasma total and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose concentrations, and 90-min postprandial glucose concentrations in individuals with NIDDM.  相似文献

Blood and plasma viscosity, total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol, free fatty acids, fibrinogen, lipid-gram, and hematocrit were determined in 53 patients with occlusive arteriosclerosis in the lower limbs prior to and after ozone therapy. At the same time the distance of the intermittent claudication was measured. A significant prolongation of the distance walked painlessly, reduction in blood and plasma viscosity as well as the decrease in total cholesterol after therapy with ozone correlated with a decrease of the blood viscosity.  相似文献

目的:探讨健康体检人群血糖与血脂现况及两者之间的相关性。方法:采集我院9758例健康体检者的空腹静脉血,检测其空腹血糖(FPG)、总胆固醇(TC)、甘油三酯(TG)、高密度脂蛋白(HDL-C)和低密度脂蛋白(LDL-C)水平,比较不同FPG水平组间各血脂水平,分析FPG水平与血脂的相关性。结果:各年龄组FPG、TC、TG、HDL-C和LDL-C水平差异均具有统计学意义(P0.05);FPG均与TC、TG和LDL-C水平呈现正相关(r=0.127,0.189,0.141,P0.005),而与HDL-C呈现负相关(r=-0.112,P0.005);根据FPG水平由高到低分为糖尿病(DM)组,血糖调节受损(IFG)组及血糖正常组,其中对TC和LDL-C水平异常率而言,IFG组DM组血糖正常组;对TG、HDL-C水平异常率而言,DM组IFG组血糖正常组。结论:健康人群中血糖和血脂水平呈现一定的相关性,两者的水平异常会增加慢性疾病的发生风险。  相似文献

Bovine plasma was assayed to determine if ergotamine affected plasma metabolite and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations. In Experiment 1, four cows received a single bolus intravenous injection of ergotamine tartrate (19 microg/kg body wt.) or saline vehicle in a crossover design 2 days after prostaglandin-induced luteolysis. Treatmentxtime affected plasma glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol and IGF-1 concentrations. Glucose and cholesterol were increased after ergotamine. Triglycerides were elevated within 1 h after ergotamine, but were decreased 3 h after ergotamine treatment. Plasma IGF-1 decreased in response to ergotamine. Blood constituents were unchanged after treatment with saline. In Experiment 2, six cows received a single bolus intravenous injection of ergotamine (20 microg/kg body wt.) or saline vehicle in a crossover design 10 days after receiving norgestomet (6 mg) via subcutaneous ear implant. Treatmentxtime affected glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and IGF-1 concentrations. Glucose and cholesterol were increased after ergotamine. Triglycerides were elevated 1 h after ergotamine and decreased 3-7 h after ergotamine. Plasma IGF-1 decreased after ergotamine treatment. Blood constituents were unresponsive to the saline vehicle. Results indicated ergotamine altered plasma metabolite and IGF-1 concentrations in cows.  相似文献

In order to apply plasma metabolite profiling to assess the quality of stopover habitat for migrant birds it is crucial to know how quickly metabolite concentrations change in response to variation in energy intake rate. We fed live mealworms to Wilson's warblers Wilsonia pusilla at rates designed to mimic a low quality (0.58 wet g/h) and a high quality (0.75 wet g/h) habitat. Plasma concentrations of triglycerides and B-OH-butyrate were higher and lower, respectively, on the high feeding rate, but plasma glycerol levels did not differ between feeding rates. Birds were then fed at the low rate for five hours, switched to the high rate and blood sampled at various times after the switch. Plasma triglycerides and B-OH-butyrate reflected the increase in feeding rate within 10 and 20 min, respectively. Plasma glycerol did not change significantly following the change in feeding rate. We conclude that plasma metabolite concentrations can change very quickly in response to variation in feeding rate, and thus provide a sensitive index of fueling rates near a capture site.  相似文献

The present study compares the cardiovascular consequences of a 6-week fructose feeding in nondiabetic and streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Myocardial performance of these animals was determined using the isolated perfused working heart preparation. Systolic blood pressure, pulse rate, ventricular weight/body weight ratio, and plasma levels of glucose, insulin, triglycerides, and cholesterol were measured. In nondiabetic rats, fructose drinking caused significant increases in blood pressure, pulse rate, and plasma concentrations of insulin and triglycerides. Streptozotocin-diabetic animals exhibited significantly less body weight growth, slower pulse rate, higher plasma levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, ventricular enlargement, and functional impairment of the myocardium. The fructose-loaded diabetic rats had larger increases in plasma cholesterol and triglycerides than did control fructose-fed rats, but the fructose-induced increases in blood pressure and pulse rate were attenuated significantly. However, plasma levels of glucose and insulin and the degree of ventricular enlargement and myocardial dysfunction were not significantly different from those of control diabetic rats. These results show that fructose loading for 6 weeks can cause increases in blood pressure, pulse rate, and plasma lipids in both nondiabetic and diabetic rats. However, fructose ingestion does not significantly alter glycemic control or affect the development of myocardial dysfunction in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.  相似文献

The present study was performed to document factors playing a role in the age-related increase of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids in male WISTAR rats. In 59 and 122 week old rats, serum concentrations of all three parameters were significantly higher than those determined in younger rats (15-17 weeks of age). Serum triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations were higher in post absorptive than in fasting state. In mature rats of same age (59 weeks), mean concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids were significantly higher in the heavier animals than in the others. A strong correlation could be established between body weight and serum cholesterol or triglycerides of these animals. The composition of diet appears to play a role in serum cholesterol concentration but not in serum triglycerides concentration in old rats (59-65 weeks of age). This effect is demonstrated even if daily caloric intake and daily body weight gain of old rats (40-50 weeks of age) were not significantly different with both diets tested (2900 and 3250 cal/kg). In conclusion old Wistar rats develop increased concentrations of serum lipids parameters.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken at weekly or 3-weekly intervals from 12 red deer stags, from 3 weeks of age until 3 years of age. Six of the stags were fed to appetite throughout the study and six were maintained on 70% as much during each winter and to appetite each summer. All plasma samples were analysed for testosterone and prolactin. Food intake was measured daily. Annual rhythms of testosterone, prolactin and food intake were evident. Peaks of prolactin, on an increasing photoperiod tended to occur slightly before peaks of food intake and troughs of food intake on a decreasing photoperiod occurred at or slightly after peaks of testosterone. The reduced plane of winter nutrition tended to delay rather than alter the amplitude of the annual cycles of testosterone, prolactin or food intake. Several of the unrestricted stags showed biannual rhythms of testosterone, prolactin and food intake accompanied by additional cycles of coat development and antler growth. These additional cycles tended to be 6 months out of rhythm with normal cycles. It is considered that this is due to the stags being stimulated by a particular day-length irrespective of whether it is decreasing or increasing and that plane of nutrition may influence the control of phase blockers.  相似文献

The effects of age (from 1 day post-hatch to 98 days of age) and feeding levels (feed restriction followed by overfeeding v. ad libitum feeding) on lipid deposition in breast muscle (quantity and quality, localisation) of mule ducks were determined in relation to muscle energy metabolism (glycolytic and oxidative), plasma levels of lipids, glucose and insulin, and muscle capacity for lipid uptake (characterised by lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity). Two periods were defined for age effects on intramuscular lipids in breast muscle: − 1 to 42 days of age when lipids (mainly phospholipids and cholesterol provided by egg yolk) stored in the adipocytes during embryonic life were transferred to the muscle fibres and used for growth and energy requirements, − 42 to 98 days of age when the muscle again stored lipids (mainly triglycerides provided by liver lipogenesis), first in fibres and then in adipocytes.Plasma glucose and insulin levels were not affected by age. Plasma levels of lipids and LPL activity in breast muscle were high at 1 and 14 days of age and then decreased, remaining stable until 98 days of age. Energy metabolism activity in the breast muscle (mainly glycolytic activity) increased with age.Feed restriction, corresponding to 79% of ad libitum intake, applied between 42 and 75 days of age only resulted in decreases in plasma insulin concentration and total lipid content of breast muscle, mainly affecting triglyceride and mono-unsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) levels. Overfeeding increased plasma levels of insulin and lipids while glycaemia remained stable. LPL activity and total lipid levels increased in breast muscle, mainly induced by deposition of triglycerides and MUFA occurring particularly during the 2nd week of this period. Glycolytic energy metabolism decreased.In response to age or feeding levels, muscle lipid levels and composition reflect plasma lipid levels and composition and high muscle lipid levels stimulate oxidative energy metabolism.  相似文献
