ABSTRACT. The ixodid tick, Rhipicephalus pulchellus (Ixodidae) can be observed aggregated on the tips of grass stems in the field in Kenya. From laboratory experiments, Browning (1976) concluded that these aggregations were the result of ticks having first aggregated on the ground if provided with sufficient cover. During our extension of Browning's experiments using several types of cover, the ticks did not exhibit aggregating behaviour. The influence of the presence of a human observer on the activity of the ticks, however, became apparent.  相似文献

We examined behavioral mechanisms underlying aggregation and mate location in the red milkweed beetle, Tetraopes tetrophthalmus (Forster) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Larvae of this species feed on rhizomes of common milkweed, Asclepias syriaca L., and adults feed on the flowers and foliage, aggregating on individual stems within milkweed patches. Adults preferred to aggregate on milkweeds that had multiple, large inflorescences. Males actively searched for females, often flying between host plants. Mate location did not appear to involve long-range pheromones or vision, but rather males landed on milkweed stems arbitrarily, whether or not females were present. Males remained for longer periods, and so tended to accumulate, on milkweed stems that had female-biased sex ratios. We conclude that aggregation of T. tetrophthalmus is cued by host plant characteristics but dynamically influenced by the sex ratio of conspecifics present on individual stems.  相似文献

The aggregation-dependent loss of flagellar adhesiveness in Chlamydomonas reinhardi has been correlated with changes in flagellar tip morphology during adhesion and deadhesion. As aggregating mt? and impotent (able to adhere, but not fuse) mt+ gametes begin to disaggregate in the presence of the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide, there is a concomitant change in flagellar tip morphology from the activated bulbous form to the nonactivated tapered shape. The requirement of protein-synthetic activity for the maintenance of flagellar adhesiveness during aggregation may be due in part to turnover of proteins involved in formation or stabilization of activated flagellar tips. Incubation of aggregating gametes with tunicamycin indicates that, like protein synthesis inhibitors, this inhibitor of glycosylation also causes adhering gametes to deadhere. The results suggest that protein glycosylation may be essential for maintenance of adhesiveness during aggregation.  相似文献

Oxpeckers (Buphagus sp.) are two bird species closely associated to large mammals, including giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis). We tested whether oxpeckers distributed themselves at random across individuals or aggregated on individual giraffes, and whether birds select the host's body parts with the expected greatest amount of ticks. By counting oxpeckers on giraffe's body from photographs, we quantified the distribution of birds per hosts and over predefined zones on the giraffe body. Oxpeckers displayed a strong aggregation behaviour with few hosts carrying many birds while many carried a limited number or no bird, a pattern that was most exaggerated for males. Oxpeckers were disproportionately found on the mane and back, where the density of ticks is presumably the highest. This high aggregation level of birds is typical of parasitic species and could suggest that oxpecker distribution may mirror the distribution of ticks, their primary food resource, on giraffes. Abundance of ticks appears as a major driver of the oxpecker foraging behaviour, and the oxpecker–large herbivores system proves to be highly relevant for the study of host–parasite dynamics.  相似文献

In the vicinity of Palmer Station, Antarctica, the seabird tick, Ixodes uriae, forms large aggregations under rocks at the periphery of Adelie penguin rookeries. When the adult penguins return to the rookeries at the beginning of the nesting season the ticks leave their off-host aggregation site, attach to the penguins for a period of feeding, and then subsequently return to the aggregation site. In this study, we searched for chemical cues that may be used by the ticks to locate their aggregation sites as well as cues involved in finding penguins. Tick excreta and soil extracts from beneath tick aggregations contained a pheromone that elicited assembly behavior in unfed larvae, non-fed nymphs and non-fed adults. Guanine, the major excretory product of ticks, elicited assembly behavior, thus, guanine is likely an active component involved in assembly. Non-fed stages also responded positively to penguin guano and uric acid, the primary excretory product of penguins, suggesting that uric acid and other components of penguin guano function as a kairomone used by the non-fed ticks to locate their host. After feeding, the immature ticks’ response to both the assembly and kairomones is switched off for several days, and the ticks regain responsiveness only after they have molted. Fed adult females lay eggs and die without ever regaining responsiveness. Thus, I. uriae relies on two closely related chemicals to regulate two critical aspects of its life: assembly and host-finding. Guanine and other components of tick excreta function as an assembly pheromone in promoting the formation of off-host aggregations, while uric acid and other components of penguin guano function as a kairomone used by the tick to locate its host.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal attachment site patterns of ticks feeding on their hosts can be of significance if co-feeding transmission (i.e. from tick to tick without a systemic infection of the host) of pathogens affects the persistence of a given disease. Using tick infestation data on roe deer, we analysed preferred attachment sites and niche width of Ixodes ticks (larvae, nymphs, males, females) and investigated the degree of inter- and intrastadial aggregation. The different development stages showed rather consistent attachment site patterns and relative narrow feeding site niches. Larvae were mostly found on the head and on the front legs of roe deer, nymphs reached highest densities on the head and highest adult densities were found on the neck of roe deer. The tick stages feeding (larvae, nymphs, females) on roe deer showed high degrees of intrastadial spatial aggregation, whereas males did not. Male ticks showed large feeding site overlap with female ticks. Feeding site overlap between larval-female and larval-nymphal ticks did occur especially during the months May–August on the head and front legs of roe deer and might allow pathogen transmission via co-feeding. Tick density, niche width and niche overlap on roe deer are mainly affected by seasonality, reflecting seasonal activity and abundance patterns of ticks. Since different tick development stages occur spatially and temporally clustered on roe deer, transmission experiments of tick-borne pathogens are urgently needed.  相似文献

Seventeen strains of oral bacteria of the genera Actinomyces (5), Bacteroides (3), and Streptococcus (9) were tested for aggregation by the human whole salivary mucin fraction (HWSM) in comparison to three types of animal mucin preparations from submandibular glands of cow (BSM) and sheep (OSM), and from the stomach of pig (PGM). Considerable variation was seen with respect to the rate and titer of aggregation induced by these mucins. The aggregating activity of HWSM varied widely among the different bacterial strains. The Bacteroides group showed hardly any induced aggregation, whereas the final aggregation titers varied for S. sanguis (3 strains) between 12 and 48, for S. oralis (3 strains) between 6 and 48, for the S. mutans group (3 strains) between 6 and 96, and for the five Actinomyces strains even between 6 and 192. For a particular strain, similar differences in titer were seen between the four mucins. For a human salivary mucin (MG-2) it has been described that sialic acid in the sequence NeuAc (2,3)Gal(1,3)GalNac- was specifically involved in the interaction with S. sanguis strains, in contrast to S. rattus BHT. Our results, however, indicate that this sugar sequence is not a prerequisite for the aggregation of S. sanguis, as animal mucins, devoid of this structure, were equally well or even better capable of inducing aggregation. On the other hand, desialization of BSM and OSM largely abolished their aggregating capability towards S. rattus BHT. Moreover, it was found that BSM and OSM, which are comparable with respect to their major oligosaccharide structure, show considerable differences in aggregating activity towards the same bacterial strain. The results indicate that the interaction and aggregation of oral bacteria with mucins is not necessarily dictated by specific oligosaccharide structures of the mucins, but may be caused instead by common physico-chemical features of the mucins as well.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyse the ability of generalist ants to climb waxy stems and to understand whether the avoidance of such stems is solely based on their reduced ability to adhere to these surfaces. We performed observations of the locomotory behaviour and recorded the traversed distances of Lasius niger ants on flower stems of three plant species covered with epicuticular wax crystals: Anethum graveolens, Dahlia pinnata, and Tagetes patula. Using conventional and cryo-scanning electron microscopy, the surface micromorphology of plant stems and structure of ant attachment organs were examined. The present study demonstrates that the reason ants do not climb wax-covered stems is not because they are incapable of walking on such vertical surfaces, as previously assumed, but rather because they have a choice of other substrates. Presumably, additional locomotory efforts are needed to master climbing on “greasy” stems, and ants need a certain time to adapt to a new quality of the stem surface, and after this period, they can walk on these waxy stems.  相似文献

Spatial patterns are important characteristics of the forest and theycan reveal such things as successional status and ecological characteristics ofthe species. We tested the hypothesis that spatial distribution will bedifferent, depending on whether the species is intolerant or tolerant to shade. We assessed the spatial distribution of trees (> 4 cm dbh) andjuveniles in eight laurel forest plots. A univariate spatial analysis(performed with Ripley's K1) showed that all tree species havesignificantaggregation at short distances (2 m). Nevertheless, two groups ofspecies could be differentiated: Erica scoparia,Myrica faya and Ilex canariensisshowed a tendency for aggregation at large distances (larger than 6m)while L. azorica and Prunuslusitanicashowed aggregation only at shorter distances. Ripley's BivariateK1,2 analyses showed no significant differences in the spatialdistribution ofanalyzed species pairs from a null model. Only Laurusazoricahad a sufficient sample size for analysis of juvenile distribution. Aunivariateanalysis revealed thatL. azorica seedlings (stems < 50 cm high)were clumped in some plots up to 5 m, but this was not consistent.Saplings (stems > 50 cm high and < 4 cm dbh)didnot show strong clumping even at short distances. L.azoricasaplings had no significant aggregation with, nor repulsionfrom, adults of the same or different species. Spatial patterns of the speciesshould be considered in the development of restoration plans of the laurelforest 90%of which has disappeared or been intensively disturbed on Tenerife Island.  相似文献

Ticks were sampled by flagging, collecting from the investigator's clothing (walking samples), trapping with dry-ice bait, and collecting from mammal hosts on Fire Island, NY, U.S.A. The habitat distribution of adult deer ticks,Ixodes dammini, was the same in simultaneous collections from the investigator's clothing and from muslin flags. Walking and flagging samples can both be biased by differences between investigators, so the same person should do comparative samples whenever possible. Walking samples probably give a more accurate estimate than flagging samples of the human risk of encountering ticks. However, ticks (such as immatureI. dammini) that seek hosts in leaf litter and ground-level vegetation are poorly sampled by walking collections. These ticks can be sampled by flagging at ground level.Dry-ice-baited tick-traps caught far more lone-star ticks,Amblyomma americanum, than deer ticks, even in areas where deer ticks predominated in flagging samples. In comparisons of tick mobility in the lab, nymphalA. americanum were more mobile than nymphalI. dammini in 84% of the trials. Therefore, the trapping bias may result from increased trap encounter due to more rapid movement byA. americanum, although greater attraction to carbon dioxide may also play a role. Tick traps are useful for intraspecific between-habitat comparisons.Early in their seasonal activity period, larvalI. dammini were better represented in collections from mouse hosts than in flagging samples. Apparently, sampling from favored hosts can detect ticks at low population levels, but often cannot be used to get accurate estimates of pathogen prevalence in questing ticks.  相似文献

Some features of three-host exophilic ticks important for their survival differ at the generic level in relation to the types of their habitat. Ixodes and Haemaphysalis are typical forest genera, Hyalomma is an open country genus, whereas Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus, having some features of forest ticks, are closer to the ticks of open country. Forest ticks encounter rather stable and favorable temperature, humidity and illumination conditions as compared with open country ticks. A few differences determining every-day survival, host-seeking, and reproduction of ticks are considered. (1) Tolerance to desiccation is very low in forest ticks and much greater in ticks of open country. (2) Lack of eyes in forest ticks (having, however, epithelial photoreceptor cells) and formation of eyes as special morphological structures in ticks of open country. (3) Capability of mating and insemination of unfed specimens both on and off hosts in forest ticks (Ixodes) and insemination of partially engorged females only on hosts by fed males in open country ticks. (4) Reciprocal sexual dimorphism where in forest ticks females have a larger body than males and in open country ticks this correlation is opposite. (5) Linear dependence between female weight and number of eggs laid is established in forest ticks after the female weight becomes higher than 50% of mean engorgement weight whereas in open country ticks linear dependence begins to reveal itself much earlier. (6) In forest ticks the compensatory growth occurs only during adult feeding whereas in open country ticks such a growth occurs both during nymphal and adult feeding. The adaptive nature of the above differences and their evolutionary trends have been hypothesized. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Ten known or potential components of the aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAP) of the ticksAmblyomma hebraeum andA. variegatum, as well as mixtures of these components, extracts of prefed males and live prefed males, were tested as aggregation stimulants. In field assays, laboratory-reared unfed male and female ticks were released 20 cm downwind of CO2/pheromone release sites; the numbers of ticks that aggregated at the release sites were recorded after 30 min. InA. variegatum, aggregation was induced by methyl salicylate,o-nitrophenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, phenylacetaldehyde and some mixtures containing these compounds; a strong aggregation response was induced by an extract of five prefed malesA. variegatum and a weak response was induced by an extract of 50 prefed males ofA. hebraeum. InA. hebraeum, aggregation was induced by phenylacetaldehyde, mixtures of compounds that included phenylacetaldehyde, extracts of 50 prefed males ofA. hebraeum orA. variegatum and 50 live prefed males ofA. hebraeum. InA. variegatum, aggregation was inhibited if compounds that do not occur naturally in the AAP of the species were included in mixtures. InA. hebraeum, phenylacetaldehyde appeared to act as an arrestant for ticks that had been attracted to release sites by other compounds.  相似文献

In this study, tick burdens on camels (Camelus dromedarius) were determined in the vicinity of the St. Catherine monastery, Sinai, Egypt. In total 2,545 ticks (1,491 adults and 1,054 nymphs) were collected and identified. Mean tick burdens were relatively heavy and the range in number of ticks per camel was very broad (6–173). Hyalomma dromedarii was the predominant tick species and accounted for 95.6% of the adult ticks. Other ticks found were H. marginatum subspp. and H. anatolicum excavatum. All nymphs collected were Hyalomma spp.In addition, the effect of ivermectin (Ivomec MSD AGVET) on tick burdens, when given subcutaneously at 0.2 mg/kg1, was evaluated in nine camels in the date-palm plantation of Kibbutz Yahel in the Arava valley, Israel. Initial tick burdens on these camels (half-body tick counts) ranged from 20–105 ticks per camel. Seven camels from the same herd with half-body tick counts ranging from 40–107 ticks per camel were not treated and served as a control group. Ivermectin was not effective against Hyalomma tick infestation in camels under these conditions.  相似文献

This paper records the identities of 558 ixodid ticks feeding on 194 humans in South Africa. These ticks belonged to 20 species in six genera and those most frequently encountered were Amblyomma hebraeum, Haemaphysalis leachi, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, Hyalomma truncatum, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Rhipicephalus gertrudae and Rhipicephalus simus. With the exception of the larvae of R. appendiculatus, the incidents of these ticks feeding on humans correlated well with their seasonal occurrences on preferred hosts. Ticks were also collected at monthly intervals, for 14 consecutive months, from the clothing of a game-guard providing protection for field-workers engaged in the collection, by means of flannel strips, of free-living ticks from the vegetation of four localities in the southern region of the Kruger National Park. In addition, with the exception of 3 months when the particular worker was absent, ticks that fed on one of the field-workers were collected over the same 14-month period. A total of 54,429 free-living ticks belonging to 14 species and six genera were collected from the vegetation at the four localities during this time and 3751 ticks belonging to 11 species and six genera from the clothing of the game-guard. The larvae of A. hebraeum and Boophilus decoloratus were the most numerous of the immature ticks, and H. leachi and R. simus of the adults on both the vegetation and the guard’s clothing. Ticks fed on the field-worker on six occasions and 14 were collected, all of which were A. hebraeum larvae. Summary Adults of a stink bug,Megacopta punctissimum, form aggregations on stems of the bush-clover,Lespedeza crytobotria, in spring. They do not oviposit there, but feed and mate within aggregations. Oviposition is made on other leguminous plants such as the kudzu-vine,Pueraria lobata. Mean size of aggregations (groups of two or more individuals which sit on a stem at distance less than 3 cm from their nearest neighbors) consisted of 4.4 individuals. The sex ratios within aggregations were similar to overall sex ratio of the population including solitary individuals (0.58). More than 50% of females found in aggregations were copulating. Percentage of femalesin copula in larger aggregations was higher than that in smaller aggregations, and this difference was considered to be caused by the higher chance of sexual enconters in larger aggregations. It was suggested that the aggregation of this species on the bush-clover is not a ‘harem’ (a male monopolizes a group of females reported in some other stink bugs) but is mating aggregation to raise the chance of mating. Summary Uninucleate, biflagellate zoospores of Hydrodictyon, Pediastrum and Sorastrum, derived from multinucleate parental cells, aggregate and adhere to form distinctively patterned colonies; earlier work has shown that microtubules underlie the plasmalemma of these zoospores and are also conspicuous in the developing horns of aggregating cells of Pediastrum and Sorastrum. Colchicine applied to parental cells inhibited cytoplasmic cleavage and production of uninucleate zoospores. When zoospores were treated with colchicine, their peripheral microtubules disappeared; the spores failed to aggregate in ordered arrays and did not develop horns. The microtubules therefore appear to play an important role in determining the arrangement of cells in developing colonies by affecting the shape of the cells at the time of their aggregation.  相似文献

Patterns of geographic variation in tree-climbing ability of Peromyscus maniculatus were used to examine the influence of spatial variation in natural selection and gene flow on the genetic divergence of climbing behavior among populations. Offspring of adults of two subspecies sampled from 10 localities in montane conifer forest, conifer woodland, and desert scrub/grassland habitats were raised in the laboratory and tested to determine their tree-climbing ability (the maximum diameter artificial rod that a mouse could climb). Comparisons of mean rod-climbing scores revealed that individuals of P. m. rufinus sampled from montane conifer forest and conifer woodland in Arizona were better climbers than P. m. sonoriensis sampled from conifer woodland and desert habitats in Nevada. This result was consistent with the hypothesis that natural selection has produced large-scale adaptation in climbing behavior. However, the climbing ability of P. m. sonoriensis sampled from conifer woodland habitats on isolated mountaintops in Nevada has not evolved in response to natural selection to the degree expected. In addition, populations sampled from desert grassland habitat, adjacent to woodland P. m. rufinus in Arizona, have climbing abilities that are not significantly different from conifer woodland populations. These observations indicate that local adaptation was constrained. An estimate of the heritability of climbing ability (h2 = 0.352 ± 0.077) indicates that lack of a response to selection was not due to the absence of additive genetic variation. In addition, regressions of interpopulation differences on the degree of geographic isolation between pairs of populations do not support the hypothesis that gene flow between habitats has constrained evolution. Instead, a combination of historical events and insufficient time to respond to selection appears to have influenced geographic variation and the spatial scale of adaptation in climbing ability.  相似文献

Summary Vessel dimensions (total diameter and length) were determined in tropical and subtropical plants of different growth forms with an emphasis upon lianas (woody vines). The paint infusion and compressed air methods were used on 38 species from 26 genera and 16 families in the most extensive survey of vessel length made to date. Within most stems there was a skewed frequency distribution of vessel lengths and diameter, with many short and narrow vessels and few long and wide ones. The longest vessel found (7.73 m) was in a stem of the liana (woody vine) Pithecoctenium crucigerum. Mean vessel length for 33 species of lianas was 0.38 m, average maximum length was 1.45 m. There was a statistically significant inter-species correlation between maximum vessel length and maximum vessel diameter. Among liana stems and among tree+shrub stems there were statistically significant correlations between stem xylem diameter and vessel dimensions. Lianas with different adaptations for climbing (tendril climbers, twiners, scramblers) were similar in their vessel dimensions except that scramblers tended to have shorter (but not narrower) vessels. Within one genus, Bauhinia, tendril climbing species had greater maximum vessel lengths and diameters than tree and shrub species. The few long and wide vessels of lianas are thought to hydraulically compensate for their narrow stem diameters. The many narrow and short vessels, which are present in the same liana stems, may provide a high resistance auxiliary transport system.  相似文献

Leopard tortoises (n=162) were collected over a period of 19 months at the National Zoological gardens, Pretoria, South Africa and the attachment sites of larvae, nymphs and adults of A. marmoreum monitored. Most of the larvae (80%) and nymphs (87%) were found on the anterior parts of the tortoise while adults (90%) were found mainly on the posterior regions of the host body. The immature stages were predominant in soft skinned areas protected by the carapace especially the neck and upper leg areas. Male and female ticks were most commonly found on the posterior armpit. posterior legs and the areas surrounding the base of the tail. Interstadial competition as a major factor influencing attachment site segregation is doubtful. Anterior attachment site selection of the immature stages is believed to result largely from ticks lying passively in wait and then climbing onto the host as it moves through the vegetation and the requirement for soft skinned and protected areas to allow for blood feeding. Adult females usually attach posteriorly in areas that allow them to fully engorge without being dislodged by mechanical disturbance, while males prefer to attach at sites where they are protected but still remain in close proximity to female pheromone signals.  相似文献

We studied disease progression of, and host responses to, four species in the Metarhizium anisopliae complex expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP). We compared development and determined their relative levels of virulence against two susceptible arthropods, the cattle tick Rhipicephalus annulatus and the lepidopteran Galleria mellonella, and two resistant ticks, Hyalomma excavatum and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Metarhizium brunneum Ma7 caused the greatest mortality of R. annulatus, Metarhizium robertsii ARSEF 2575 and Metarhizium pingshaense PPRC51 exhibited intermediate levels of virulence, and Metarhizium majus PPRC27 caused low mortality of cattle ticks. Conidia of all four species germinated on all hosts examined, but on resistant hosts, sustained hyphal growth was inhibited and GFP emission steadily and significantly decreased over time, suggesting a loss of fungal viability. Cuticle penetration was observed only for the three most virulent species infecting susceptible hosts. Cuticles of resistant and susceptible engorged female ticks showed significant increases in red autofluorescence at sites immediately under fungal hyphae. This is the first report (i) of tick mortality occurring after cuticle penetration but prior to haemocoel colonization and (ii) that resistant ticks do not support development of Metarhizium germlings on the outer surface of the cuticle. Whether reduced Metarhizium viability on resistant tick cuticles is due to antibiosis or limited nutrient availability is unknown.  相似文献
