Summary The dimensions of net meshes constructed by hydropsychid Trichoptera vary both within and between species. Despite these catchnet differences, the diets of most Hydropsychidae studied in Utah streams were statistically indistinguishable. There was no relationship between the size of available resources and catchnet construction among species assemblages inhabiting 10 different localities. A particle-size model of caddis communities, suggesting that taxa feed selectively on particle sizes corresponding to the dimension of catchnet meshes, is not supported by these data.Diatom concentration increased regularly with downstream passage in two different drainages. The identity and number of coexisting hydropsychid species and the size of their catchnets were strongly correlated with diatom concentration. Taxa with large catchnet mesh were the only residents at sites where diatom concentration was very low; as resource concentration increased downstream, species with successively smaller mesh joined the coexisting guild. Together, the broad dietary similarities and distributional pattern from Utah streams suggest that resource concentration, rather than particle size, is the basis of community organization among the hydropsychid Trichoptera.  相似文献

Larvae of Neureclipsis bimaculata (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae) construct elaborate catchnets in lotic habitats to trap small drifting invertebrate prey. Three populations located at two oligotrophic and one eutrophic site were studied in southern Sweden. Measurements were made of larval weight, net size, seston quality and quantity, and stream velocity.
Neureclipsis larvae alter their net dimensions in response to both velocity and seston concentration. This was determined by comparing net structure and seston at the three locations. Larvae from the eutrophic, high quality seston site attain a significantly (P < 0.001) heavier instar V dry weight, spin a smaller catchnet, filter a volume of water dependent on body size, and slightly alter their catchnet dimensions with velocity. Larvae from the two oligothrophic sites are significantly smaller than those from the eutrophic site, spin a larger net at comparable velocities, filter a larger volume of water at comparable weights, and alter net dimensions with velocity.
Estimates of silk production indicate that the net cost is minimized by spinning a very fine silken strand and by adding silk over a period of time. The cost while large is offset by a large capture rate of prey.
The structure of Neureclipsis nets appears to be the result of a trade-off between maximizing food capture and minimizing hydraulic stress on the net.  相似文献

Synopsis Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, sampled from a transect along a pollution gradient show a trend of declining growth and physical condition. This trend is apparent in the mean size of 0-group croaker, in their recent growth rate measured by marginal otolith increment widths, in longer term growth rate as indicated by relative otolith weights, and in general physical condition as measured by an index of condition of the caudal fin. We suggest that these measures are indicators of stress associated with environmental conditions. Because croaker from different positions along the pollution gradient were distinguishable, it appears that they remain for extended periods within areas of degraded environmental quality.  相似文献

This study assessed changes in biomass, filament length, and cell morphology in Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. along a suspended sediment gradient in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. Suspended sediments ranged from 2.0 mg·L−1 at Lees Ferry (Rkm 0.8) to 4.2 mg·L−1 at Gorilla Island (Rkm 352). There was a 74% decrease in Cladophora biomass along the river transect through Grand Canyon National Park and a significant decrease in filament and cell length, but cell width increased. Similar changes in cell morphology occurred after 19 days when C. glomerata was transplanted from a low suspended sediment site (2.0 mg·L−1) at Lees Ferry to a habitat with high suspended sediments (≥20.0 mg·L−1). Cell length increased and cell width decreased when plants were transplanted back to the low suspended sediment habitat for 24 days. In situ studies with reduced light in the absence of suspended sediments showed no change in cell morphology. These in situ experiments imply that changes in cell morphology by C. glomerata in waters with high suspended sediments are adjustments in structural integrity to accommodate the abrasive force of suspended particles. Our study suggests that cell dimensions in Cladophora might be too plastic under varying environmental conditions to be used in taxonomic determinations.  相似文献

The distribution of niches in resource space and the niche patterns of a 14-species community of Middle Asian desert rodents were studied during two years - at low and high rodent density - using discriminant function analysis Nineteen quantitative environmental parameters (soil structure and vegetation), measured in 550 plots within 22 1 -ha grids, were considered The first three canonical axes of resource space account for 72% of the variance The first two axes represent complex environmental gradients the first axis represents a general landscape gradient from sand to clay soils, the second axis reflects a gradient of in creasing productivity The third axis reflects with in-habitat environmental variation All community parameters, as well as parameters of individual species niches, were unstable between years At the same time, different parameters vary in different extent Position of niche centroids along macro-habitat axes, as. well as macrohabitat niche breadth, were relatively stable between years, but these parameters for microhabitat axis and values of niche overlap were much more variable A strong correlation between changes m relative between-habitat niche breadth and differences in average niche overlap with relative changes in species abundances indicate density dependence of these parameters Changes in niche overlap is a consequence of between-year differences in guild patterns Guild structure was pronounced at high density when the level of niche overlap was intermediate At low density, when the level of niche overlap decreased, guild structure was incon-spicous Different levels of diversity differed in their sensitivity to density changes α-diversity was relatively constant as a result of between-year stability of niche centroid positions However level of ß-diversity varied significantly between years reflecting changes in the level of niche overlap, because a decrease in niche overlap leads to an increase in the rate of species turnover  相似文献

Focal laser ablation destroys cancerous cells via thermal destruction of tissue by a laser. Heat is absorbed, causing thermal necrosis of the target region. It combines the aggressive benefits of radiation treatment (destroying cancer cells) without the harmful side effects (due to its precise localization). MRI is typically used pre-treatment to determine the targeted area, and post-treatment to determine efficacy by detecting necrotic tissue, or tumor recurrence. However, no system exists to quantitatively evaluate the post-treatment effects on the morphology and structure via MRI. To quantify these changes, the pre- and post-treatment MR images must first be spatially aligned. The goal is to quantify (a) laser-induced shape-based changes, and (b) changes in MRI parameters post-treatment. The shape-based changes may be correlated with treatment efficacy, and the quantitative effects of laser treatment over time is currently poorly understood. This work attempts to model changes in gland morphology following laser treatment due to (1) patient alignment, (2) changes due to surrounding organs such as the bladder and rectum, and (3) changes due to the treatment itself. To isolate the treatment-induced shape-based changes, the changes from (1) and (2) are first modeled and removed using a finite element model (FEM). A FEM models the physical properties of tissue. The use of a physical biomechanical model is important since a stated goal of this work is to determine the physical shape-based changes to the prostate from the treatment, and therefore only physical real deformations are to be allowed. A second FEM is then used to isolate the physical, shape-based, treatment-induced changes. We applied and evaluated our model in capturing the laser induced changes to the prostate morphology on eight patients with 3.0 Tesla, T2-weighted MRI, acquired approximately six months following treatment. Our results suggest the laser treatment causes a decrease in prostate volume, which appears to manifest predominantly at the site of ablation. After spatially aligning the images, changes to MRI intensity values are clearly visible at the site of ablation. Our results suggest that our new methodology is able to capture and quantify the degree of laser-induced changes to the prostate. The quantitative measurements reflecting of the deformation changes can be used to track treatment response over time.  相似文献

An organism’s investment in different traits to reduce predation is determined by the fitness benefit of the defense relative to the fitness costs associated with the allocation of time and resources to the defense. Inherent tradeoffs in time and resource allocation should result in differential investment in defense along a resource gradient, but competing models predict different patterns of investment. There are currently insufficient empirical data on changes in investment in defensive traits or their costs along resource gradients to differentiate between the competing allocation models. In this study, I exposed tadpoles to caged predators along a resource gradient in order to estimate investment in defense and costs of defense by assessing predator-induced plasticity. Induced defenses included increased tail depth, reduced feeding, and reduced swimming activity; costs associated with these defenses were reduced developmental rate, reduced growth, and reduced survival. At low resource availability, these costs predominately resulted in reduced survival, while at high resource availability the costs yielded a reduced developmental rate. Defensive traits responded strongly to predation risk, but did not respond to resource availability (with the exception of feeding activity), whereas traits construed as costs of defenses showed the opposite pattern. Therefore, defensive traits were highly sensitive to predation risk, while traits construed as costs of defense were highly sensitive to resource allocation tradeoffs. This difference in sensitivity between the two groups of traits may explain why the correlation between the expression of defensive traits and the expression of the associated defense costs was weak. Furthermore, my results indicate that genetic linkages and mechanistic integration of multiple defensive traits and their associated costs may constrain time and resource allocation in ways that are not addressed in existing models. The extensive use of traits in ecological studies over the last few decades to predict community functions has revealed that plant traits are plastic and respond to various environmental factors. These plant traits are assumed to predict how plants compete and capture resources. Variation in stoichiometric ratios both within and across species reflects resource capture dynamics under competition. However, the impact of local plant diversity on species‐specific stoichiometry remains poorly studied. Here, we analyze how spatial and temporal diversity in resource‐acquisition traits affects leaf elemental stoichiometry of plants (i.e. the result of resource capture) and how flexible this stoichiometry is depending on the functional composition of the surrounding community. Therefore, we assessed inter‐ and intraspecific variations of leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) (and their ratios) of 20 grassland species in a large trait‐based plant diversity experiment located in Jena (Germany) by measuring leaf elemental concentrations at the species‐level along a gradient in plant trait dissimilarity. Our results show that plants showed large intra‐ and interspecific variation in leaf stoichiometry, which was only partly explained by the functional group identity (grass or herb) of the species. Elemental concentrations (N, P, but not C) decreased with plant species richness, and species tended to become more deviant from their monoculture stoichiometry with increasing trait dissimilarity in the community. These responses differed among species, some consistently increased or decreased in P and N concentrations; for other species, the negative or positive change in P and N concentrations increased with increasing trait difference between the target species and the remaining community. The strength of this relationship was significantly associated to the relative position of the species along trait gradients related to resource acquisition. Trait‐difference and trait‐diversity thus were important predictors of how species’ resource capture changed in competitive neighbourhoods.  相似文献

1 We measured competition intensity (CI) between herbaceous vegetation and tree seedlings ( Quercus macrocarpa and Q. ellipsoidalis ) along an experimental moisture–light gradient. Contrasting theories were tested by comparing variation in competition intensity to changes in neighbour biomass and resource supply and demand.
2 CI based on survival was inversely correlated with net soil water supply (gross supply minus demand by herbaceous vegetation). CI was not positively correlated with either gross resource supply or neighbour biomass, contrary to predictions of Grime's triangular model for plant strategies.
3 Many of the inconsistencies and conflicting results that have characterized the recent literature on plant competition could be eliminated if changes in competition intensity along a resource gradient are compared with changes in net resource supply rather than changes in productivity or neighbour biomass.
4 Tree seedling success in savannas and grasslands may be strongly influenced by the intensity of competition from herbaceous vegetation. Factors that reduce soil water content are likely to increase competition intensity (and reduce seedling success) in these environments, while factors that increase soil water content will favour seedling success through decreased competition for water with herbaceous vegetation.  相似文献

The utilization of food resources by aquatic consumers reflects the structure and functioning of river food webs. In lotic water systems, where food availability and predator–prey relationships vary with gradient changes in physical conditions, understanding diet assimilation by local communities is important for ecosystem conservation. In the subtropical Liuxi River, southern China, the relative contribution of basal resources to the diet assimilation of functional feeding groups (FFGs) was determined by stable carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) isotope analyses. The output of Bayesian mixing models showed that diatom‐dominated periphyton (epilithic biofilm), aquatic C3 plants (submerged hydrophytes), and suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) associated with terrestrial C3 plants contributed the most to the diet assimilation of FFGs in the upper, middle, and lower reaches, respectively. The relative contribution of consumer diet assimilation was weighted by the biomass (wet weight, g/m2) of each FFG to reflect resource utilization at the assemblage level. From the upper to the lower reaches, the spatial variation in the diet assimilation of fish and invertebrate assemblages could be summarized as a longitudinal decrease in periphyton (from 57%–76% to <3%) and an increase in SPOM (from <7% to 51%–68%) with a notable midstream increase in aquatic C3 plants (23%–48%). These results indicate that instream consumers in the Liuxi River rely more on autochthonous production (e.g., periphyton and submerged hydrophytes) than on terrestrially derived allochthonous matter (e.g., terrestrial plants). The pattern of resource utilization by consumers in the mid‐upper Liuxi River is consistent with findings from other open subtropical and neotropical rivers and provides evidence for the riverine productivity model. Our study indicates that protecting inherent producers in rivers (e.g., periphyton and submerged hydrophytes) and restoring their associated habitats (e.g., riffles with cobble substrate) are conducive to aquatic ecosystem management.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to alter precipitation patterns worldwide, which will affect streamflow in riverine ecosystems. It is vital to understand the impacts of projected flow variations, especially in tropical regions where the effects of climate change are expected to be one of the earliest to emerge. Space‐for‐time substitutions have been successful at predicting effects of climate change in terrestrial systems by using a spatial gradient to mimic the projected temporal change. However, concerns have been raised that the spatial variability in these models might not reflect the temporal variability. We utilized a well‐constrained rainfall gradient on Hawaii Island to determine (a) how predicted decreases in flow and increases in flow variability affect stream food resources and consumers and (b) if using a high temporal (monthly, four streams) or a high spatial (annual, eight streams) resolution sampling scheme would alter the results of a space‐for‐time substitution. Declines in benthic and suspended resource quantity (10‐ to 40‐fold) and quality (shift from macrophyte to leaf litter dominated) contributed to 35‐fold decreases in macroinvertebrate biomass with predicted changes in the magnitude and variability in the flow. Invertebrate composition switched from caddisflies and damselflies to taxa with faster turnover rates (mosquitoes, copepods). Changes in resource and consumer composition patterns were stronger with high temporal resolution sampling. However, trends and ranges of results did not differ between the two sampling regimes, indicating that a suitable, well‐constrained spatial gradient is an appropriate tool for examining temporal change. Our study is the first to investigate resource to community wide effects of climate change on tropical streams on a spatial and temporal scale. We determined that predicted flow alterations would decrease stream resource and consumer quantity and quality, which can alter stream function, as well as biomass and habitat for freshwater, marine, and terrestrial consumers dependent on these resources.  相似文献

Asymmetry patterns across the distribution range: does the species matter?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An important question in evolutionary ecology is whether different populations across a species range, from core to periphery, experience different levels of stress. The estimation of developmental instability has been proposed as a useful tool for quantifying the degree of environmental and genetic stress that individuals experience during their development. Fluctuating asymmetry, the unsigned difference between the two sides of a bilaterally symmetrical trait, has been suggested to reflect the levels of developmental instability in a population. As such, it has been proposed as a useful tool for estimating changes in developmental instability and in stress response in populations across a range of environmental conditions. Recent studies focusing mostly on birds have detected increasing fluctuating asymmetry from core to periphery across the distribution range, suggesting that peripheral populations may experience higher levels of environmental and/or genetic stress. Most of these comparisons were done for single taxa across a single gradient. However, different species are predicted to respond differently to environmental shifts across the range. We compared asymmetry patterns in wing morphology in populations of two Euchloe butterfly species across their opposing ranges in Israel. Contrary to the patterns observed in birds across the same gradient, bilateral asymmetry did not increase or shift towards the periphery in either of the butterfly species. If fluctuating asymmetry in these traits reflects levels of stress, these results may partly reflect the fact that the range of these two butterfly species is limited by the distribution of their host plant, rather than by abiotic environmental variables. In addition, developing pierids can diapause during harsh seasons and can persist in resource‐rich patches, thus minimizing the environmental stress perceived by developing individuals. We conclude that accounting for differences in species’ life histories and range‐limiting factors is necessary in order to better predict patterns of developmental instability across spatial and environmental gradients. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 81 , 313–324.  相似文献

Understanding and explaining the causes of variation in food-chain length is a fundamental challenge for community ecology. The productive-space hypothesis, which suggests food-chain length is determined by the combination of local resource availability and ecosystem size, is central to this challenge. Two different approaches currently exist for testing the productive-space hypothesis: (1) the dual gradient approach that tests for significant relationships between food-chain length and separate gradients of ecosystem size (e.g., lake volume) and per-unit-size resource availability (e.g., g C m−1 year−2), and (2) the single gradient approach that tests for a significant relationship between food-chain length and the productive space (product of ecosystem size and per-unit-size resource availability). Here I evaluate the efficacy of the two approaches for testing the productive-space hypothesis. Using simulated data sets, I estimate the Type 1 and Type 2 error rates for single and dual gradient models in recovering a known relationship between food-chain length and ecosystem size, resource availability, or the combination of ecosystem size and resource ability, as specified by the productive-space hypothesis. The single gradient model provided high power (low Type 2 error rates) but had a very high Type 1 error rate, often erroneously supporting the productive-space hypothesis. The dual gradient model had a very low Type 1 error rate but suffered from low power to detect an effect of per-unit-size resource availability because the range of variation in resource availability is limited. Finally, I performed a retrospective power analysis for the Post et al. (Nature 405:1047–1049, 2000) data set, which tested and rejected the productive-space hypothesis using the dual gradient approach. I found that Post et al. (Nature 405:1047–1049, 2000) had sufficient power to reject the productive-space hypothesis in north temperate lakes; however, the productive-space hypothesis must be tested in other ecosystems before its generality can be fully addressed.  相似文献

Photo-crosslinked polymer beads were introduced into a laboratory activated-sludge unit containing municipal sewage sludge and the effect on nitrifying capacity was examined. The ammonia load started at a nitrogen-loading rate of 0.02 kg m(-3) day(-1) and was increased stepwise. It was found that the bead-containing unit could almost completely oxidize ammonia (over 95%) up to a nitrogen-loading rate of 0.216 kg m(-3) day(-1), whereas the maximum loading rate of the control unit (without polymer beads) was 0.096 kg m(-3) day(-1). The nitrifying potential of suspended and bead-associated organisms in the bead-containing unit was measured under different loading conditions. It was found that the bead-associated organisms exhibited high specific activities under high loading conditions and that the contribution of the bead-associated organisms to nitrification was greater than that of the suspended solids under these conditions. The bacterial population dynamics in the suspended solids and bead-associated organisms were analysed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments and by fluorescence in situ hybridization with group-specific probes. Among the known nitrifying organisms, ammonia-oxidizing beta-proteobacteria and Nitrospira-related organisms were detected by these approaches. A comparison of the activity dynamics and population dynamics, however, suggested a possibility that other organisms may also have been involved in the nitrification process under high loading conditions.  相似文献

1. Adaptive trade-offs are fundamental to the evolution of diversity and the coexistence of similar taxa and occur when complimentary combinations of traits maximize efficiency of resource exploitation or survival at different points on environmental gradients. 2. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) is a key physiological trait that reflects adaptations to baseline metabolic performance, whereas active metabolism reflects adaptations to variable metabolic output associated with performance related to foraging, predator avoidance, aggressive interactions or migratory movements. Benefits of high SMR and active metabolism may change along a resource (productivity) gradient, indicating that a trade-off exists among active metabolism, resting metabolism and energy intake. 3. We measured and compared SMR, maximal metabolic rate (MMR), aerobic scope (AS), swim performance (UCrit) and growth of juvenile hatchery and wild steelhead and coho salmon held on high- and low-food rations in order to better understand the potential significance of variation in SMR to growth, differentiation between species, and patterns of habitat use along a productivity gradient. 4. We found that differences in SMR, MMR, AS, swim performance and growth rate between steelhead trout and coho salmon were reduced in hatchery-reared fish compared with wild fish. Wild steelhead had a higher MMR, AS, swim performance and growth rate than wild coho, but adaptations between species do not appear to involve differences in SMR or to trade-off increased growth rate against lower swim performance, as commonly observed for high-growth strains. Instead, we hypothesize that wild steelhead may be trading off higher growth rate for lower food consumption efficiency, similar to strategies adopted by anadromous vs. resident brook trout and Atlantic salmon vs. brook trout. This highlights potential differences in food consumption and digestion strategies as cryptic adaptations ecologically differentiating salmonid species. 5. We hypothesize that divergent digestive strategies, which are common and well documented among terrestrial vertebrates, may be an important but overlooked aspect of adaptive strategies of juvenile salmonids, and fish in general.  相似文献

Physical structures built by animals challenge our understanding of biological processes and inspire the development of smart materials and green architecture. It is thus indispensable to understand the drivers, constraints, and dynamics that lead to the emergence and modification of building behavior. Here, we demonstrate that spider web diversification repeatedly followed strikingly similar evolutionary trajectories, guided by physical constraints. We found that the evolution of suspended webs that intercept flying prey coincided with small changes in silk anchoring behavior with considerable effects on the robustness of web attachment. The use of nanofiber based capture threads (cribellate silk) conflicts with the behavioral enhancement of web attachment, and the repeated loss of this trait was frequently followed by physical improvements of web anchor structure. These findings suggest that the evolution of building behavior may be constrained by major physical traits limiting its role in rapid adaptation to a changing environment.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Most current commercial flow cytometers employ analog circuitry to provide feature values describing the pulse waveforms produced from suspended cells and particles. This restricts the type of features that can be extracted (typically pulse height, width, and integral) and consequently places a limit on classification performance. In previous work, we described a first-generation digital data acquisition and processing system that was used to demonstrate the classification advantages provided by the extraction of additional waveform features. An improved version of the system is discussed in this paper, focusing on dual-buffering to ensure increased pulse capture. A mathematical model of the system is also presented for performance analysis. METHODS: The second-generation system incorporates fast digitization of analog pulse waveforms, instantaneous pulse detection hardware, and a novel dual-buffering scheme. A mathematical model of the system was developed to theoretically compute the capture-rate performance. RESULTS: The capture rate of the system was theoretically analyzed and empirically measured. Under typical conditions, a capture rate of 8,000 pulses/s was experimentally achieved. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results, the dual-buffer architecture shows great potential for use in flow cytometry.  相似文献

Primary suspended cultures of rhesus monkey kidney cells were infected with poliomyelitis virus, type 1 (Brunhilde strain). The release of virus from these cells over a one-step growth curve was correlated with their change in fine structure, as seen in the electron microscope. Most of the cells were infected nearly simultaneously, and morphological changes developed in the cells were sufficiently synchronous to be classified into three stages. The earliest change (stage I) became visible at a time when virus release into the culture fluid begins, some 3 hours after adsorption. Accentuation of the abnormal characteristics soon occurs, at 4 to 7 hours after adsorption, and results in stage II. Stage III represents the appearance of cells after their rate of virus release had passed its maximum, and probably the abnormal morphology of these cells reflects non-specific physiological damage. There seems to be consistency between the previously described cellular changes as seen under the light microscope and the finer scale changes reported here. Cytoplasmic bodies, called U bodies, were seen in large number at the time when the virus release was the most rapid (stage II). While these bodies are not of proper size to be considered polio virus, they seem to be specifically related to the infection. No evidence was found for the presence of particles that could even be presumptively identified with those of polio virus.  相似文献

Complementary abundance gradients of substituting congeneric arachnids along the northern margin of the Alps are described, and the possible historical and contemporary factors that have produced these distributions are explored. The intensities of activity of epigeous arachnids were determined in pitfall traps along seven altitudinal transects approximately 35 km apart in the Bavarian Alps (Germany) and in the county of Salzburg (Austria). No supraregional gradient of physical factors exists within the region investigated. Six pairs of congeners show vicariances or alternating abundance gradients. For each species pair, the abundance gradient is represented in diagrams and compared with a graphic model of substitution types. Three patterns are evident: strict vicariances, abrupt replacement in a narrow belt, and gradual substitution over a wide zone of sympatric occurrence. The different extent of range overlap suggests distinctive classes and intensities of interspecific interactions. With regard to biogeographic histories, one prevailing pattern emerged: endemic species of the eastern Alps are replaced by Eurosiberian counterparts towards the west. It appears that geographical abundance variation reflects colonization history.  相似文献

Climate change is rapidly reshaping Arctic landscapes through shifts in vegetation cover and productivity, soil resource mobilization, and hydrological regimes. The implications of these changes for stream ecosystems and food webs is unclear and will depend largely on microbial biofilm responses to concurrent shifts in temperature, light, and resource supply from land. To study those responses, we used nutrient diffusing substrates to manipulate resource supply to biofilm communities along regional gradients in stream temperature, riparian shading, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loading in Arctic Sweden. We found strong nitrogen (N) limitation across this gradient for gross primary production, community respiration and chlorophyll‐a accumulation. For unamended biofilms, activity and biomass accrual were not closely related to any single physical or chemical driver across this region. However, the magnitude of biofilm response to N addition was: in tundra streams, biofilm response was constrained by thermal regimes, whereas variation in light availability regulated this response in birch and coniferous forest streams. Furthermore, heterotrophic responses to experimental N addition increased across the region with greater stream water concentrations of DOC relative to inorganic N. Thus, future shifts in resource supply to these ecosystems are likely to interact with other concurrent environmental changes to regulate stream productivity. Indeed, our results suggest that in the absence of increased nutrient inputs, Arctic streams will be less sensitive to future changes in other habitat variables such as temperature and DOC loading.  相似文献
