The Hospital Microbiome Project: Meeting Report for the 1st Hospital Microbiome Project Workshop on sampling design and building science measurements,Chicago, USA,June 7th-8th 2012

This report details the outcome of the 1st Hospital Microbiome Project workshop held on June 7th-8th, 2012 at the University of Chicago, USA. The workshop was arranged to determine the most appropriate sampling strategy and approach to building science measurement to characterize the development of a microbial community within a new hospital pavilion being built at the University of Chicago Medical Center. The workshop made several recommendations and led to the development of a full proposal to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation as well as to the creation of the Hospital Microbiome Consortium.     

Meeting report: 2010 Caenorhabditis elegans Neurobiology Meeting, University of Wisconsin, USA

Against the backdrop of the scenic Lake Mendota, the C. elegans Neurobiology Meeting came to a head. Expertly organised by Brian Ackley and Bruce Bamber and hosted at the accommodating University of Wisconsin, the meeting brought together recent contributions from many of the major research groups working on the neurobiology of C. elegans. With seven keynote speakers, 57 verbal presentations and hundreds of posters, this exciting event spanned a fascinating 3 days from 27 June to 30 June 2010. In keeping with the tradition of this conference, the event on the whole was spearheaded by young investigators from several research institutions. The meeting served to emphasise the gains enjoyed by taking advantage of the genetic tractability of the worm. A thread that ran through the meeting was the importance of integrating data across different levels of biological organisation to permit delineation of the physiology underpinning discrete behavioural states. Recent advances in optogenetics and microfluidics were at the forefront of refining these analyses. The presentations discussed in this meeting report are a selection which reflects this overarching theme.

Meeting Report: The 24th Fungal Genetics Conference at Asilomar, California, USA

<正>The 24~(th) Fungal Genetics Conference was recently held at the Asilomar Conference Center in the coastal town of Pacific Grove,Monterey County,California,USA,between March 20~(th) and 25~(th),2007.At this conference,there were 750 participants representing 33 countries,with the number of participants reaching the maximum holding capacity of the conference center.About 200 people were on the waiting list and could not attend the meeting because of space limitations.     

The 2nd US–Japan DNA Repair Meeting, Honolulu, Hawaii, June 4–8, 2004

The 2nd US–Japan DNA Repair Meeting convened at the JW Marriott Ihilani Hotel, outside Honolulu, Hawaii, from June 4–8, 2004. In keeping with the tradition of US–Japan conferences the meeting was modest in size comprising 25 participants from each country. The program featured platform presentations from each participant, with lots of time devoted to discussion of groups of related talks. A novel feature of the meeting was the absence of formally designated and previously announced titles for sessions and talks, providing a level of informality that promoted relaxed interactions. Discussion was gratifyingly brisk and informative throughout and was considered to be a highlight of the meeting. All sessions were chaired by the program planners Errol Friedberg and Sam Wilson, who did not present formal talks. The following pages comprise summations of the talks presented, organized into primary topic themes.

Meeting report of the RNA Ontology Consortium January 8-9, 2011

This report summarizes the proceedings of the structure mapping working group meeting of the RNA Ontology Consortium (ROC), held in Kona, Hawaii on January 8-9, 2011. The ROC hosted this workshop to facilitate collaborations among those researchers formalizing concepts in RNA, those developing RNA-related software, and those performing genome annotation and standardization. The workshop included three software presentations, extended round-table discussions, and the constitution of two new working groups, the first to address the need for better software integration and the second to discuss standardization and benchmarking of existing RNA annotation pipelines. These working groups have subsequently pursued concrete implementation of actions suggested during the discussion.
