Diurnal changes in net photosynthetic rate (P N), chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and stomatal aperture of several hybrid poplar clones subjected to midday light stress were measured in July and August of 1996. Midday depression of P N, photosystem 2 (PS2) efficiency, stomatal conductance (g s), and stomatal aperture was observed in all clones, though at differing rates among them. Non-uniform stomatal closure occurred at noon and at other times, requiring a modification of intercellular CO2 concentration (C 1). A linear relationship was found between g s and stomatal aperture. More than half of the photons absorbed by PS2 centre dissipated thermally when subjected to light stress at noon. There was a linear relationship between the rate of PS2 photochemical electron transport (PxPFD) and P N. There was a consensus for two fluorescence indicators (1 – qP/qN and (Fm' – F)/Fm') in assessment of susceptibility of photoinhibition in the clones. According to P N, Chl fluorescence, and stomatal aperture, we conclude that midday depression of photosynthesis can be attributed to both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations.  相似文献

Response of net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (c i), and photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem 2 (PS2) was assessed in Eucalyptus cladocalyx grown for long duration at 800 (C800) or 380 (C380) μmol mol-1 CO2 concentration under sufficient water supply or under water stress. The well-watered plants at C800 showed a 2.2 fold enhancement of P N without any change in g s. Under both C800 and C380, water stress decreased P N and g s significantly without any substantial reduction of c i, suggesting that both stomatal and non-stomatal factors regulated P N. However, the photosynthetic efficiency of PS2 was not altered. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of salinity (sea water at 0 ‰ versus 30 ‰) on gross rates of O2 evolution (J O2) and net rates of CO2 uptake (P N) were measured in the halotolerant estuarine C4 grasses Spartina patens, S. alterniflora, S. densiflora, and Distichlis spicata in controlled growth environments. Under high irradiance, salinity had no significant effect on the intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration ratio (C i/C a). However, during photosynthesis under limiting irradiance, the maximum quantum efficiency of CO2 fixation decreased under salinity across species, suggesting there is increased leakage of the CO2 delivered to the bundle sheath cells by the C4 pump. Growth under salinity did not affect the maximum intrinsic efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (FV/FM) in these species, suggesting salinity had no effect on photosynthesis by inactivation of PS2 reaction centers. Under saline conditions and high irradiance, P N was reduced by 75 % in Spartina patens and S. alterniflora, whereas salinity had no effect on P N in S. densiflora or D. spicata. This inhibition of P N in S. patens and S. alterniflora was not due to an effect on stomatal conductance since the ratio of C i/C a did not decrease under saline conditions. In growth with and without salt, P N was saturated at ∼500 μmol(quantum) m−2 s−1 while J O2 continued to increase up to full sunlight, indicating that carbon assimilation was not tightly coupled to photochemistry in these halophytic species. This increase in alternative electron flow under high irradiance might be an inherent function in these halophytes for dissipating excess energy.  相似文献

The potential for C4 photosynthesis was investigated in five C3-C4 intermediate species, one C3 species, and one C4 species in the genus Flaveria, using 14CO2 pulse-12CO2 chase techniques and quantum-yield measurements. All five intermediate species were capable of incorporating 14CO2 into the C4 acids malate and aspartate, following an 8-s pulse. The proportion of 14C label in these C4 products ranged from 50–55% to 20–26% in the C3-C4 intermediates F. floridana Johnston and F. linearis Lag. respectively. All of the intermediate species incorporated as much, or more, 14CO2 into aspartate as into malate. Generally, about 5–15% of the initial label in these species appeared as other organic acids. There was variation in the capacity for C4 photosynthesis among the intermediate species based on the apparent rate of conversion of 14C label from the C4 cycle to the C3 cycle. In intermediate species such as F. pubescens Rydb., F. ramosissima Klatt., and F. floridana we observed a substantial decrease in label of C4-cycle products and an increase in percentage label in C3-cycle products during chase periods with 12CO2, although the rate of change was slower than in the C4 species, F. palmeri. In these C3-C4 intermediates both sucrose and fumarate were predominant products after a 20-min chase period. In the C3-C4 intermediates, F. anomala Robinson and f. linearis we observed no significant decrease in the label of C4-cycle products during a 3-min chase period and a slow turnover during a 20-min chase, indicating a lower level of functional integration between the C4 and C3 cycles in these species, relative to the other intermediates. Although F. cronquistii Powell was previously identified as a C3 species, 7–18% of the initial label was in malate+aspartate. However, only 40–50% of this label was in the C-4 position, indicating C4-acid formation as secondary products of photosynthesis in F. cronquistii. In 21% O2, the absorbed quantum yields for CO2 uptake (in mol CO2·[mol quanta]-1) averaged 0.053 in F. cronquistii (C3), 0.051 in F. trinervia (Spreng.) Mohr (C4), 0.052 in F. ramosissima (C3-C4), 0.051 in F. anomala (C3-C4), 0.050 in F. linearis (C3-C4), 0.046 in F. floridana (C3-C4), and 0.044 in F. pubescens (C3-C4). In 2% O2 an enhancement of the quantum yield was observed in all of the C3-C4 intermediate species, ranging from 21% in F. ramosissima to 43% in F. pubescens. In all intermediates the quantum yields in 2% O2 were intermediate in value to the C3 and C4 species, indicating a co-function of the C3 and C4 cycles in CO2 assimilation. The low quantum-yield values for F. pubescens and F. floridana in 21% O2 presumably reflect an ineffcient transfer of carbon from the C4 to the C3 cycle. The response of the quantum yield to four increasing O2 concentrations (2–35%) showed lower levels of O2 inhibition in the C3-C4 intermediate F. ramosissima, relative to the C3 species. This indicates that the co-function of the C3 and C4 cycles in this intermediate species leads to an increased CO2 concentration at the site of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and a concomitant decrease in the competitive inhibition by O2.Abbreviations PEP phosphoenolpyruvate - PGA 3-phosphoglycerate - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), leaf water potential (ψleaf), leaf nitrogen content, and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) were compared between a typical C4 plant, Agriophyllum squarrosum and a C3 plant, Leymus chinensis, in Hunshandak Sandland, China. The plant species showed different diurnal gas exchange patterns on June 12–14 when photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), air temperature (T air), and water potential were moderate. P N, E, and g s of A. squarrosum showed distinct single peak while those of L. chinensis were depressed at noon and had two peaks in their diurnal courses. Gas exchange traits of both species showed midday depression under higher photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and T air when Ψleaf was significantly low down on August 6–8. However, those of A. squarrosum were depressed less seriously. Moreover, A. squarrosum had higher P N, Ψleaf, water use efficiency (WUE), and PNUE than L. chinensis. Thus A. squarrosum was much more tolerant to heat and high irradiance and could utilise the resources on sand area more efficiently than L. chinensis. Hence species like A. squarrosum may be introduced and protected to reconstruct the degraded sand dunes because of their higher tolerance to stress and higher resource use efficiency. Two C3 dicotyledonous crops and five C4 monocotyledons treated with three levels of nitrogen were used to evaluate quantitatively the relationship between the allocation of absorbed light energy in PSII and photosynthetic rates (P N) in a warm condition (25–26°C) at four to five levels [200, 400, 800, 1,200 (both C3 and C4) and 2,000 (C4 only) μmol m−2 s−1] of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). For plants of the same type (C3 or C4), there was a linear positive correlation between the fraction of absorbed light energy that was utilized in PSII photochemistry (P) and P N, regardless of the broad range of their photosynthetic rates due to species-specific effect and/or nitrogen application; meanwhile, the fraction of absorbed light energy that was dissipated through non-photochemical quenching (D) showed a negative linear regression with P N for each level of PPFD. The intercept of regression lines between P and P N of C3 and C4 plants decreased, and that between D and P N increased with increasing PPFD. With P and D as the main components of energy dissipation and complementary to each other, the fraction of excess absorbed light energy (E) was unchanged by P N under the same level of PPFD. At the same level of P N, C4 plants had lower P and higher D than C3 plants, due to the fact that C4 plants with little or no photorespiration is considered a limited energy sink for electrons. Nevertheless there was a significant negative linear correlation between D and P when data from both C3 and C4 plants at varied PPFD levels was merged. The slope of regression lines between P and D was 0.85, indicating that in plants of both types, most of the unnecessary absorbed energy (ca. 85%) could dissipate through non-photochemical quenching, when P was inhibited by low P N due to species-specific effect and nitrogen limitation at all levels of illumination used in the experiment.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The success of C4 plants lies in their ability to attain greater efficiencies of light, water and nitrogen use under high temperature, providing an advantage in arid, hot environments. However, C4 grasses are not necessarily less sensitive to drought than C3 grasses and are proposed to respond with greater metabolic limitations, while the C3 response is predominantly stomatal. The aims of this study were to compare the drought and recovery responses of co-occurring C3 and C4 NADP-ME grasses from the subfamily Panicoideae and to determine stomatal and metabolic contributions to the observed response.

Methods

Six species of locally co-occurring grasses, C3 species Alloteropsis semialata subsp. eckloniana, Panicum aequinerve and Panicum ecklonii, and C4 (NADP-ME) species Heteropogon contortus, Themeda triandra and Tristachya leucothrix, were established in pots then subjected to a controlled drought followed by re-watering. Water potentials, leaf gas exchange and the response of photosynthetic rate to internal CO2 concentrations were determined on selected occasions during the drought and re-watering treatments and compared between species and photosynthetic types.

Key Results

Leaves of C4 species of grasses maintained their photosynthetic advantage until water deficits became severe, but lost their water-use advantage even under conditions of mild drought. Declining C4 photosynthesis with water deficit was mainly a consequence of metabolic limitations to CO2 assimilation, whereas, in the C3 species, stomatal limitations had a prevailing role in the drought-induced decrease in photosynthesis. The drought-sensitive metabolism of the C4 plants could explain the observed slower recovery of photosynthesis on re-watering, in comparison with C3 plants which recovered a greater proportion of photosynthesis through increased stomatal conductance.

Conclusions

Within the Panicoid grasses, C4 (NADP-ME) species are metabolically more sensitive to drought than C3 species and recover more slowly from drought.  相似文献

Growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics were investigated in wild type (WT) and Cd-sensitive mutant rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants using 50 μM Cd treatment for 12 d followed by a 3-d recovery. Under Cd stress, net dry mass and pigment contents were significantly lower in the mutant plants than in the WT. The mutant had lower net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) than WT rice, however, it had higher intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), indicating that non-stomatal factors accounted for the inhibition of P N. Maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2), and photochemical quenching (qP) decreased much in the mutant under Cd stress. Cd content in roots and leaves of the mutant was significantly higher than those in the WT. Hence Cd toxicity was associated with the marked increases in Cd contents of plant tissue. After the recovery for 3 d, the WT rice had higher capacity to recover from Cd injury than the mutant.  相似文献

Photosynthetic pathways (e.g. C3, C4) and morphological functional types (e.g. trees, shrubs, high perennial grasses, perennial forbs) were identified for the native species from the Saskatchewan mixed prairie, using the data from references published between 1950 and 2003. Of the total 219 identified species in 145 genera and 45 families, 208 species in 137 genera and 44 families were found with C3 photosynthesis, and most of these species are dominants (e.g. Agropyron dasystachyum Hook. and Stipa spartea var. curtiseta Hitchc.). 11 species in 10 genera and 3 families were identified with C4 photosynthesis (e.g. Atriplex argentea Nutt., Andropogon scoparius Michx., Boutelou gracilis Lag., Calamovilfa longifolia Hook.). The amount of total identified C4 species in the region is much less than that from the South Dakota mixed prairie (27 species). Gramineae is the leading family with C4 photosynthesis (8 species), Chenopodiaceae ranks the second (2 species). Relatively less forb types [50 % perennial forbs (PEF) and 12 % annual forbs (ANF)] and more graminoid types (25 %) composition suggested that the rangelands in the region are relatively stable. Lacking of the knowledge on the optimal traits for PFTs classification in the region, further studies (e.g. C3 and C4 plant identification and optimal trait selection) are needed to explore the relationships between PFTs and vegetation variations, as well as land-use and climate changes.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and stomatal limitation (Ls) of Populus euphratica grown at different groundwater depths in the arid region were measured. g s of the trees with groundwater depth at 4.74 m (D4) and 5.82 m (D5) were lower and a little higher than that at 3.82 m (D3), respectively. Compared with C i and Ls of the D3 trees, C i decreased and Ls increased at 4.74 m, however, Ci increased and Ls decreased at D5. Hence photosynthetic reduction of P. euphratica was attributed to either stomatal closure or non-stomatal factors depending on the groundwater depths in the plant locations. P N of the D3 trees was significantly higher than those at D4 or D5. The trees of D4 and D5 did not show a significant difference in their P N, indicating that there are mechanisms of P. euphratica tolerance to mild and moderate drought stress.  相似文献

To investigate how excess excitation energy is dissipated in a ribulose-1,5-bisphospate carboxylase/oxygenase activase antisense transgenic rice with net photosynthetic rate (P N) half of that of wild type parent, we measured the response curve of P N to intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), electron transport rate (ETR), quantum yield of open photosystem 2 (PS2) reaction centres under irradiation (Fv′/Fm′), efficiency of total PS2 centres (ΦPS2), photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), post-irradiation transient increase in chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (PITICF), and P700+ re-reduction. Carboxylation efficiency dependence on C i, ETR at saturation irradiance, and Fv′/Fm′, ΦPS2, and qP under the irradiation were significantly lower in the mutant. However, NPQ, energy-dependent quenching (qE), PITICF, and P700+ re-reduction were significantly higher in the mutant. Hence the mutant down-regulates linear ETR and stimulates cyclic electron flow around PS1, which may generate the ΔpH to support NPQ and qE for dissipation of excess excitation energy.  相似文献

The effect of drought stress (DS) on photosynthesis and photosynthesis-related enzyme activities was investigated in F. pringlei (C3), F. floridana (C3–C4), F. brownii (C4-like), and F. trinervia (C4) species. Stomatal closure was observed in all species, probably being the main cause for the decline in photosynthesis in the C3 species under ambient conditions. In vitro ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) and stromal fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase (sFBP) activities were sufficient to interpret the net photosynthetic rates (P N), but, from the decreases in P N values under high CO2 (C a = 700 μmol mol− 1) it is concluded that a decrease in the in vivo rate of the RuBPCO reaction may be an additional limiting factor under DS in the C3 species. The observed decline in the photosynthesis capacity of the C3–C4 species is suggested to be associated both to in vivo decreases of RuBPCO activity and of the RuBP regeneration rate. The decline of the maximum P N observed in the C4-like species under DS was probably attributed to a decrease in maximum RuBPCO activity and/or to decrease of enzyme substrate (RuBP or PEP) regeneration rates. In the C4 species, the decline of both in vivo photosynthesis and photosynthetic capacity could be due to in vivo inhibition of the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) by a twofold increase of the malate concentration observed in mesophyll cell extracts from DS plants.  相似文献

Diurnal variation in net photosynthetic rate (P N) of three-year-old plants of Ginkgo biloba was studied under open, O (receiving full sunlight), net-shade, NS (40 % of photosynthetically active radiation, PAR), or greenhouse, G (25 % PAR) conditions. In all three conditions, P N was higher in morning along with stomatal conductance (g s), and intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), while leaf temperature and vapour pressure deficit were low. The O-plants exhibited a typical decline in P N during midday, which was not observed in NS-plants. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in O-plants as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) and photosystem 2 (PS2) yield (PS2) values were higher in the NS- and G-plants. On the contrary, stomatal density and index, chlorophyll a/b ratio, leaf thickness, and density of mesophyll cells were greater in O-plants. Further, higher P N throughout the day along with higher relative growth rate under NS as compared to O and G suggested the better efficiency of Ginkgo plants under NS conditions. Therefore, this plant species could be grown at 40 % irradiance to meet the ever-increasing demand of leaf and also to increase its export potential.  相似文献

Wheat plants grown in controlled growth chambers were exposed to drought stress (DS) and high temperature (HT) singly and in combination (DS+HT). The effects of these two stresses on net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), variable to maximum chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (Fv/Fm), photochemical (qp) and non-photochemical (NPQ) Chl fluorescence, and yield were investigated. Grain yield was decreased by 21 % due to DS, while it was increased by 26 % due to HT. P N, g s, C i, and Chl fluorescence were dramatically reduced to DS, HT, and their interaction, except NPQ which showed an increase due to HT.  相似文献

In this report, the effects of light on the activity and allosteric properties of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase were examined in newly matured leaves of several C3 and C4 species. Illumination of previously darkened leaves increased the enzyme activity 1.1 to 1.3 fold in C3 species and 1.4 to 2.3 fold in C4 species, when assayed under suboptimal conditions (pH 7) without allosteric effectors. The sensitivities of PEP carboxylase to the allosteric effectors malate and glucose-6-phosphate were markedly different between C3 and C4 species. In the presence of 5 mM malate, the activity of the enzyme extracted from illuminated leaves was 3 to 10 fold higher than that from darkened leaves in C4 species due to reduced malate inhibition of the enzyme from illuminated leaves, whereas it increased only slightly in C3 species. The Ki(malate) for the enzyme increased about 3 fold by illumination in C4 species, but increased only slightly in C3 species. Also, the addition of the positive effector glucose-6-phosphate provided much greater protection against malate inhibition of the enzyme from C4 species than C3 species. Feeding nitrate to excised leaves of nitrogen deficient plants enhanced the degree of light activation of PEP carboxylase in the C4 species maize, but had little or no effect in the C3 species wheat. These results suggest that post-translational modification by light affects the activity and allosteric properties of PEP carboxylase to a much greater extend in C4 than in C3 species.  相似文献

Most species of the genus Salsola (Chenopodiaceae) that have been examined exhibit C4 photosynthesis in leaves. Four Salsola species from Central Asia were investigated in this study to determine the structural and functional relationships in photosynthesis of cotyledons compared to leaves, using anatomical (Kranz versus non-Kranz anatomy, chloroplast ultrastructure) and biochemical (activities of photosynthetic enzymes of the C3 and C4 pathways, 14C labeling of primary photosynthesis products and 13C/12C carbon isotope fractionation) criteria. The species included S. paulsenii from section Salsola, S. richteri from section Coccosalsola, S. laricina from section Caroxylon, and S. gemmascens from section Malpigipila. The results show that all four species have a C4 type of photosynthesis in leaves with a Salsoloid type Kranz anatomy, whereas both C3 and C4 types of photosynthesis were found in cotyledons. S. paulsenii and S. richteri have NADP- (NADP-ME) C4 type biochemistry with Salsoloid Kranz anatomy in both leaves and cotyledons. In S. laricina, both cotyledons and leaves have NAD-malic enzyme (NAD-ME) C4 type photosynthesis; however, while the leaves have Salsoloid type Kranz anatomy, cotyledons have Atriplicoid type Kranz anatomy. In S. gemmascens, cotyledons exhibit C3 type photosynthesis, while leaves perform NAD-ME type photosynthesis. Since the four species studied belong to different Salsola sections, this suggests that differences in photosynthetic types of leaves and cotyledons may be used as a basis or studies of the origin and evolution of C4 photosynthesis in the family Chenopodiaceae. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Species in the Laxa and Grandia groups of the genus Panicum are adapted to low, wet areas of tropical and subtropical America. Panicum milioides is a species with C3 photosynthesis and low apparent photorespiration and has been classified as a C3/C4 intermediate. Other species in the Laxa group are C3 with normal photorespiration. Panicum prionitis is a C4 species in the Grandia group. Since P. milioides has some leaf characteristics intermediate to C3 and C4 species, its photosynthetic response to irradiance and temperature was compared to the closely related C3 species, P. laxum and P. boliviense and to P. prionitis. The response of apparent photosynthesis to irradiance and temperature was similar to that of P. laxum and P. boliviense, with saturation at a photosynthetic photo flux density of about 1 mmol m-2 s-1 at 30°C and temperature optimum near 30°C. In contrast, P. prionitis showed no light saturation up to 2 mmol m-2 s-1 and an optimum temperature near 40°C. P. milioides exhibited low CO2 loss into CO2-free air in the light and this loss was nearly insensitive to temperature. Loss of CO2 in the light in the C3 species, P. laxum and P. boliviense, was several-fold higher than in P. milioides and increased 2- to 5-fold with increases in temperature from 10 to 40°C. The level of dark respiration and its response to temperature were similar in all four Panicum species examined. It is concluded that the low apparent photorespiration in P. milioides does not influence its response of apparent photosynthesis to irradiance and temperature in comparison to closely related C3 Panicum species.Abbreviations AP apparent photosynthesis - I CO2 compensation point - gl leaf conductance; gm, mesophyll conductance - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - PR apparent photorespiration rate - RuBPC sibulose bisphosphate carboxylase  相似文献

Gas exchanges and related leaf traits of three co-occurring species of genus Cypripedium (C. yunnanense Franch., C. guttatum SW., and C. flavum P.F. Hunt et Summerch.) were investigated in a scrubland at 3 460 m a.s.l. in the Hengduan Mountains. The considered species had similar photosynthetic responses to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and air temperature. The photosynthetic capacity (P max), carboxylation efficiency (CE), apparent quantum efficiency (AQE), PPFD-saturated rate of electron transport (Jmax), respiration rate (R D), and leaf nitrogen content per unit area (LNC) of C. guttatum were higher than those of C. yunnanense and C. flavum. The highest P max of C. guttatum was related to the highest LNC and the lowest ratio of intercellular CO2 concentration to atmospheric CO2 concentration (C i/C a). However, no significant differences in stomatal conductance (g s) and relative stomatal limitations (RSL) were observed among the three species. Hence biochemical limitation had a dominant role in P max differences among the considered species.  相似文献

The net photosynthetic rate (P N), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and leaf biomass production of four American flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cultivars K 326, K 358, and Speight G 28 were compared with three local Indian cultivars 16/103, Special FCV, and PCT-7, during 1994 and 1995 crop seasons under irrigated and rainfed production systems (Northern light soils, NLS, and Karnataka light soils, KLS) in India. By comparison, the American tobacco cv. K 326 showed the highest P N and g s. A positive correlation was found between P N and biomass production in all the varieties tested (r = 0.55 in NLS and 0.73 in KLS). The American cultivars were superior than the local cultivars in their biomass production and P N under Indian farming conditions.  相似文献
