The purpose of this study was to determine whether intact cardiac innervation and a normal cardiovascular (CV) response are required for a normal ventilatory (VE) response to mild and moderate treadmill exercise in awake goats. Accordingly, we measured CV and respiratory responses to two levels of exercise in seven normal (N) and six cardiac-denervated (CD) goats. Evidence of surgical CD included 1) absence of a cardiac response during surgery when the left thoracic cardiac nerves, thoracic vagi, and right and left stellate ganglia were electrically stimulated, 2) total and 80% attenuation of baroreflex changes in heart rate (HR) when arterial blood pressure was raised or lowered, respectively, by infusion of vasoactive agents in awake goats, and 3) attenuation of the CV responses to exercise. At each level of exercise in the CD goats, the HR response was significantly reduced relative to the response observed before CD (P less than 0.05) and the recovery HR response was delayed. Cardiac index increased in a work rate-dependent manner in N and CD goats but was significantly lower in the CD animals (P less than 0.05). Hypotension was consistently observed during exercise following CD. There was no effect of CD on steady-state VE at any metabolic rate or on the VE-O2 uptake relationship (P greater than 0.05). The rest-to-work and work-to-work transition responses of arterial PCO2 were similar between N and CD goats, but there was a tendency toward greater hypocapnia at the exercise onset in CD goats at the highest work rate.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Arterial blood samples were obtained from six greyhounds during rest, immediately before, and after a 704-m (7/16th mile) race. Measurements were made of various haematological (red cell count, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, white cell count, plasma proteins) and haemorheological variables. Blood and plasma viscosity were determined at high wall shear stresses (67-200 dynes.cm-2, 670-2000 microN.cm-2) in a 20-microns glass capillary device which was designed to take the diameter dependence of blood viscosity (Fahraeus-Lindqvist effect) into account. Compared to values at rest, substantial haemoconcentration occurred before the race, mainly due to splenic discharge of red cells. Additional haemoconcentration was found after the race. The increase of effective blood viscosity caused by elevation of packed cell volume was greater than the increase in O2 binding capacity resulting from the elevated haemoglobin concentration, suggesting that the haemoconcentration observed in the exercising greyhound does not enhance O2 delivery to skeletal muscle. The main physiological effect of red cell discharge from the contracting spleen appeared to be a consequence of the volume rather than the composition of the circulating blood.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of naloxone, an opioid antagonist, on exercise capacity in 13 men and 5 women (mean age = 30.1 yr, range = 21-35 yr) during a 25 W/min incremental cycle ergometer test to exhaustion on different days during familiarization trial and then after 30 mg (iv bolus) of naloxone or placebo (Pl) in a double-blind, crossover design. Minute ventilation (Ve), O(2) consumption (Vo(2)), CO(2) production, and heart rate (HR) were monitored. Perceived exertion rating (0-10 scale) and venous samples for lactate were obtained each minute. Lactate and ventilatory thresholds were derived from lactate and gas-exchange data. Blood pressure was obtained before exercise, 5 min postinfusion, at maximum exercise, and 5 min postexercise. There were no control-Pl differences. The naloxone trial demonstrated decreased exercise time (96% Pl; P < 0.01), total cumulative work (96% Pl; P < 0.002), peak Vo(2) (94% Pl; P < 0.02), and HR (96% Pl; P < 0.01). Other variables were unchanged. HR and Ve were the same at the final common workload, but perceived exertion was higher (8.1 +/- 0.5 vs. 7.1 +/- 0.5) after naloxone than Pl (P < 0.01). The threshold for effort perception amplification occurred at approximately 60 +/- 4% of Pl peak Vo(2). Thus we conclude that peak work capacity was limited by perceived exertion, which can be attenuated by endogenous opioids rather than by physiological limits.  相似文献

Sequential exercise-gated cardiac blood pool scintigrams provide a noninvasive technique for evaluating the effect of therapeutic interventions on cardiac volumes and function only if both exercise periods are equivalent in the absence of an intervention. To assess whether they are indeed equivalent, 14 healthy subjects underwent gated blood pool scintigraphy during two maximal upright exercise periods separated by 60 min without changing position. Although resting cardiac output and blood pressure returned to base-line values 60 min after the first exercise period, mean resting heart rate was markedly higher (89.4 +/- 2.7 vs. 66.5 +/- 2.5 beats/min, P less than 0.001) and upright cardiac volumes lower [39.1 +/- 4.9 vs. 56.3 +/- 6.0 ml, P less than 0.001, for end-systolic volume (ESV) and 112.6 +/- 8.0 vs. 144.9 +/- 9.0 ml, P less than 0.001, for end-diastolic volume (EDV)] than before the first exercise period. These differences persisted during low levels of the subsequent exercise but not at high and maximum work loads. Cardiac volumes and heart rate 60 min after an identical exercise protocol in a second group of 22 subjects who received propranolol, 0.15 mg/kg iv, after their initial exercise, however, were the same as those preexercise. Thus higher sympathetic tone may be responsible for the persistently higher heart rate and decreased cardiac volumes after exercise, and the assumption that cardiac volumes and function are similar during two closely spaced sequential exercise studies is not always valid.  相似文献

To assess the role of intrapulmonary receptors on the ventilatory responses to exercise we studied six beagle dogs before and after chronic pulmonary denervation and five dogs before and after sham thoracotomies. Each exercise challenge consisted of 6 min of treadmill exercise with measurements taken during the third minute at 3.2 km/h, 0% grade, and during the third minute at 5.0 km/h, 0% grade. Inspiratory and expiratory airflows were monitored with a low-dead-space latex mask and pneumotachographs coupled to differential pressure transducers. Both pre- and postsurgery, all dogs exhibited a significant arterial hypocapnia and alkalosis during exercise. Denervation of the lungs had no significant effect on minute ventilation at rest or during exercise, although there was a lower frequency and higher tidal volume in the lung-denervated dogs at all measurement periods. Breathing frequency increased significantly during exercise in lung-denervated dogs but to a lesser magnitude than in the control dogs. The changes that occurred in breathing frequency in all animals were due predominantly to the shortening of expiratory time. Inspiratory time did not shorten significantly during exercise following lung denervation. We conclude from these data that intrapulmonary receptors which are deafferented by sectioning the vagi at the hilum are not responsible for setting the level of ventilation during rest or exercise but are involved in determining the pattern of breathing.  相似文献

The inspiratory muscles can be fatigued by repetitive contractions characterized by high force (inspiratory resistive loads) or high velocities of shortening (hyperpnea). The effects of fatigue induced by inspiratory resistive loaded breathing (pressure tasks) or by eucapnic hyperpnea (flow tasks) on maximal inspiratory pressure-flow capacity and rib cage and diaphragm strength were examined in five healthy adult subjects. Tasks consisted of sustaining an assigned breathing frequency, duty cycle, and either a "pressure-time product" of esophageal pressure (for the pressure tasks) or peak inspiratory flow rate (for the flow tasks). Esophageal pressure was measured during maximal inspiratory efforts against a closed glottis (Pesmax), maximal transdiaphragmatic pressure was measured during open-glottis expulsive maneuvers (Pdimax), and maximal inspiratory flow (VImax) was measured during maximal inspiratory efforts with no added external resistance before and after fatiguing pressure and flow tasks. The reduction in Pesmax) with pressure fatigue (-25 +/- 7%) was significantly greater than the change in Pesmax with flow fatigue (-8 +/- 8%, P less than 0.01). In contrast, the reductions in Pdimax (-11 +/- 8%) and VImax (-16 +/- 3%) with flow fatigue were greater than the changes in Pdimax (-0.6 +/- 4%, P less than 0.05) or VImax (-3 +/- 4%, P less than 0.05) with pressure fatigue. We conclude that respiratory muscle performance is dependent not only on the presence of fatigue but whether fatigue was induced by pressure tasks or flow tasks. The specific impairment of Pesmax and not of Pdimax or flow with pressure fatigue may reflect selective fatigue of the rib cage muscles.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Carnitine has a potential effect on exercise capacity due to its role in the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation, the export of acyl-coenzyme A compounds from mitochondria and the activation of branched-chain amino acid oxidation in the muscle. We studied the effect of carnitine supplementation on palmitate oxidation, maximal exercise capacity and nitrogen balance in rats. Daily carnitine supplementation (500 mg.kg-1 body mass for 6 weeks) was given to 30 rats, 15 of which were on an otherwise carnitine-free diet (group I) and 15 pair-fed with a conventional pellet diet (group II). A control group (group III, n = 6) was fed ad libitum the pellet diet. Palmitate oxidation was measured by collecting 14CO2 after an intraperitoneal injection of [1-14C]palmitate and exercise capacity by swimming to exhaustion. After carnitine supplementation carnitine concentrations in serum were supranormal [group I, total 150.8 (SD 48.5), free 78.9 (SD 18.4); group II, total 170.9 (SD 27.9), free 115.8 (SD 24.6) mumol.l-1] and liver carnitine concentrations were normal in both groups [group I, total 1.6 (SD 0.3), free 1.2 (SD 0.2); group II, total 1.3 (SD 0.3), free 0.9 (SD 0.2) mumol.g-1 dry mass]. In muscle carnitine concentrations were normal in group I [total 3.8 (SD 1.2), free 3.2 (SD 1.0) mumol.g-1 dry mass] and increased in group II [total 6.6 (SD 0.5), free 4.9 (SD 0.9) mumol.g-1 dry mass].(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Effect of prior exercise on maximal short-term power output in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of prior exercise (PE) on subsequent maximal short-term power output (STPO) was examined during cycling exercise on an isokinetic ergometer. In the first series of experiments the duration of PE at a power output equivalent to 98% maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) was varied between 0.5 and 6 min before measurement of maximal STPO. As PE duration increased subsequent STPO fell to approximately 70% of control values after 3-6 min. In series ii the effect of varying the intensity of PE of fixed 6-min duration was studied in five subjects. After PE less than 60% VO2max there was an increase of 12% in STPO, but after greater than 60% VO2max there was a progressive fall in STPO as PE intensity increased, indicating a reduction of approximately 35% at 100% VO2max compared with control values. In series iii we examined the effect on STPO of allowing a recovery period after a fixed intensity (mean = 87% VO2max) of 6 min PE before measurement of STPO. This indicated a rapid recovery of dynamic function with a half time of approximately 32 s, which is similar to the kinetics of PC resynthesis and taken with the other findings suggests the dominant role that PC exerts on the STPO under these conditions.  相似文献

The essential therapy of diabetes mellitus includes medical nutrition therapy (MNT), exercise and medical therapy. Exercise, besides its metabolic effects, has positive influence on the immune system, but some forms of exercise may cause trauma for muscle and skeletal systems, they may also support negative effects on the immune system. Nineteen type 1 diabetic patients (mean age 22.1 +/- 2.8 yrs), followed by Diabetes Outpatient Clinic and twenty age matched male control subjects were included into the study, to demonstrate the effects of maximal, acute exercise on the immune system. The exercise test was performed according to Bruce protocol on treadmill. In diabetic subjects, increased CD19 and CD23 expressions were observed before exercise. In both groups (diabetic/control) CD3, CD4 expressions and CD4/CD8 ratio were decreased following the exercise, however expression of natural killer (NK) cells increased. Compared to type 1 diabetic patients healthy subjects had longer acute exercise that caused the increased level of CD8 expression, however type 1 diabetic patients did not show any difference. These results indicate that submaximal aerobic exercise might be recommended for type 1 diabetics without any complications because of its positive reflection on metabolic control and no negative effects on the immune system.  相似文献

Effect of mild-to-moderate airflow limitation on exercise capacity   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
To determine the effect of mild-to-moderate airflow limitation on exercise tolerance and end-expiratory lung volume (EELV), we studied 9 control subjects with normal pulmonary function [forced expired volume in 1 s (FEV1) 105% pred; % of forced vital capacity expired in 1 s (FEV1/FVC%) 81] and 12 patients with mild-to-moderate airflow limitation (FEV1 72% pred; FEV1/FVC % 58) during progressive cycle ergometry. Maximal exercise capacity was reduced in patients [69% of pred maximal O2 uptake (VO2max)] compared with controls (104% pred VO2max, P less than 0.01); however, maximal expired minute ventilation-to-maximum voluntary ventilation ratio and maximal heart rate were not significantly different between controls and patients. Overall, there was a close relationship between VO2max and FEV1 (r2 = 0.62). Resting EELV was similar between controls and patients [53% of total lung capacity (TLC)], but at maximal exercise the controls decreased EELV to 45% of TLC (P less than 0.01), whereas the patients increased EELV to 58% of TLC (P less than 0.05). Overall, EELV was significantly correlated to both VO2max (r = -0.71, P less than 0.001) and FEV1 (r = -0.68, P less than 0.001). This relationship suggests a ventilatory influence on exercise capacity; however, the increased EELV and associated pleural pressures could influence cardiovascular function during exercise. We suggest that the increase in EELV should be considered a response reflective of the effect of airflow limitation on the ventilatory response to exercise.  相似文献
