Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I is a biomarker that may have greater utility than other conventional nutritional biomarkers in assessing nutritional, health, and fitness status. We hypothesized that the IGF-I system would directionally track a short-term energy deficit and would be more related to changes in body composition than other nutritional biomarkers. Thirty-five healthy men (24 +/- 0.3 yr) underwent 8 days of exercise and energy imbalance. Total and free IGF-I, IGF binding proteins-1, -2, and -3, the acid labile subunit, transferrin, ferritin, retinol binding protein, prealbumin, testosterone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and leptin responses were measured. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry assessed changes in body mass and composition. Repeated-measures ANOVA, correlation analysis, and receiver operator characteristic curves were used for statistical analyses (P < or = 0.05). Body mass (-3.8%), fat-free mass (-2.2%), and fat mass (-12.9%) all decreased. Total and free IGF-I, IGF binding protein-3, and the acid labile subunit and prealbumin, but not transferrin, retinol-binding protein, and ferritin, directionally tracked the energy deficit and losses in body composition. The correlation (r = 0.43) between changes in free IGF-I and body and fat-free mass was the only significant association observed. Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis revealed that a baseline value < 1.67 for the molar volume ratio of IGF-I to acid labile subunit had an area under the curve of 0.745 and was a significant discriminator for those subjects losing >5% body mass. The IGF-I system is an important adjunct in the overall assessment of adaptation to stress imposed by high levels of physical activity superimposed on energy and sleep restriction and is more closely associated with losses in body mass and fat-free mass than other conventional nutritional biomarkers. 相似文献

We investigated the relationship between IGF-I, gender, height, weight, body composition and birth size in 260 healthy 7- and 8-year-old children (139 females). All children were born term at Nepean Hospital, Western Sydney. Body composition was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. IGF-I levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. Girls had higher IGF-I levels than boys (20.2 +/- 6.5 nmol/l compared to 15.9 +/- 6.1 nmol/l, p < 0.001) but there was no correlation between age and IGF-I. IGF-I was positively correlated with height SDS (R(2) = 0.12), weight SDS (R(2) = 0.19), BMI SDS (R(2) = 0.18), total body fat (%) (R(2) = 0.14), and fat-free tissue/cm (R(2) = 0.03). After adjusting for gender and current weight, IGF-I-levels were inversely related to birth size - children with the lowest birth size and heaviest current weight had the highest IGF-I levels. This correlation between birth weight and IGF-I supports the hypothesis that the IGF-I axis is altered in babies who are small for gestational age. 相似文献

It has been suggested that renal conversion of sodium (Na+) during training in hot environments results in potassium (K+) deficiencies. This investigation examined the influence of two levels of dietary Na+ intake (399 vs 98 mmol X d-1) on intramuscular, urinary, sweat, and whole body K+ homeostasis. Nine unacclimated, untrained males underwent heat acclimation during two 8 day dietary-exercise regimens (40.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C, 23.5 +/- 0.4% RH). Both diets resulted in depressed urinary K+ excretion. Sweat K+ and muscle K+ concentrations were not altered by diets or acclimation. The whole body stores of Na+ increased 31.1% (+916.8 mmol) during the high Na+ diet and decreased 7.8% (-230.4 mmol) during the low Na+ diet; whole body stores of K+ increased 4.1% (+137.6 mmol) during the high Na+ diet and increased 3.4% (+113.6 mmol) during the low Na+ diet. This dietary-acclimation protocol did not result in whole-body or intramuscular K+ deficits and offers no evidence to support previous claims that dietary sodium levels affect K+ balance. 相似文献

The effects of the amount of fat provided in a restricted diet on weight loss and body composition were studied in this work. Lean male (Fa/?) Zucker rats were fed a control diet ad libitum. Obese (fa/fa) Zucker rats were divided into three groups: one group was fed a control diet ad libitum and the other two groups were fed 75% energy-restricted diets, which provided 10 or 50% of calories as fat. After 4 weeks, energy restriction normalized body weight but not body composition in the genetically obese rats. Reductions in adipose tissue weights and adipocyte size, without changes in the cellularity, were observed. Differences only reached statistical significance in subcutaneous adipose tissue. A standard fat content in the diet induced the same fat-free mass reduction as a higher amount of this macronutrient, but a greater body fat reduction. This suggests that the restriction of dietary fat, as well as energy, is necessary to achieve dietary management in obesity. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to modulate seminal plasma insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) by dietary energy and assess the relationship among testosterone and IGF-I levels, semen quality and fertility in adult rams. Twenty-four 1-yr old adult Nellore rams were equally divided into three groups (n = 8) and fed with three different concentrate mixtures formulated using conventional ingredients and finger millet (Eleucine corocana) straw to ensure rams received with similar amount of crude protein with three levels of energy. Rams in low-energy group were offered diets with 20% less energy than the control energy group (optimum energy, 100%, recommended energy level), whereas rams in high energy group were offered diets with 20% more energy than the optimum energy group. Semen was collected from rams 60 days after start of the experimental feeding. The percentages of progressive forward motility, functional membrane integrity and mitochondrial membrane potential of the spermatozoa were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in control and high energy groups as compared to low-energy group. Feeding of low-energy diet significantly (P < 0.05) decreased spermatozoa VSL, VCL and VAP when compared to control and high energy fed groups. The number of spermatozoa binding/oocyte was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in control (11.23 ± 0.20) and high energy (10.57 ± 0.19) groups as compared to the low energy (6.14 ± 0.01) group. The serum and seminal plasma IGF-I levels were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in control and high energy fed groups as compared to the low-energy group. The serum testosterone and cholesterol levels were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the control group as compared to the low-energy group. The seminal plasma fructose levels in optimum energy fed animals were significantly (P < 0.05) higher as compared to other two groups. The seminal plasma IGF-I level had positive correlation with progressive forward motility (r = 0.7) and other velocity (linearity, r = 0.7; straightness, r = 0.7) parameters. The study suggested that the modulation of seminal plasma IGF-I levels by dietary energy is possible and the optimum level of seminal plasma IGF-I is necessary and sufficient to influence semen quality. 相似文献

The objectives were to examine the effects of dietary energy and protein density on age and body composition at puberty, and on ovarian follicular dynamics during the pre- and peripubertal periods in Holstein heifers. In Phase 1, heifers were randomly allotted (n=10 per diet) at 100 kg body weight (BW) to diets with either low (P1L), medium (P1M) or high (P1H) energy and protein formulated for an average daily gain (ADG) of 0.5, 0.8 or 1.1 kg per day, respectively. During Phase 2 (P2), all heifers were fed ad libitum a common diet formulated for an ADG of 0.8 kg per day. Half the animals within the high (n=5) and low groups (n=5) entered P2 either at 12 months of age (P2H-12; P2L-12) or at 330 kg BW (P2H-330; P2L-330). Heifers fed P1H, P1M, P1L, and P2L-12 diets attained puberty at approximately 9, 11, 16, and 14 months of age, respectively (P<0.01). Urea space estimates of body fat and protein percent, and back-fat thickness, were lower in P1L heifers compared to P1H or P1M heifers at similar chronological ages (P<0.05) but did not differ at puberty (P>0.10). Compared to P1L heifers, P1H heifers had high amplitude LH pulses at 8 months, and high frequency low amplitude LH pulses at 10 months of age (P<0.05). The mean diameter (mm) of the dominant follicle was smaller (P<0.05) in P1L heifers (10.6) compared to P1H (12.8) or P1M (12.2) heifers at 8 months. Maximum size and growth rate of the nonovulatory dominant follicle increased with age (P<0.05) but did not differ between P1H and P1M heifers at puberty. The diameter (mm) of the nonovulatory dominant follicle, and the first and second ovulatory follicles were larger in P2L-12 heifers (14.0, 14.7, and 14.9) compared to P1M heifers (13.1, 12.5, and 11.9), while the peak progesterone levels and CL growth were lower (P<0.05) in the first cycle. In conclusion, dairy heifers attained puberty at a constant body weight and body composition independent of dietary manipulation, the size of dominant follicles increased with age in association with increased LH support, and heifers realimented from a low energy diet developed larger first ovulatory follicles and smaller CL with lower peak progesterone concentrations in the first cycle. 相似文献

The effects of ration and temperature on the body composition, energy content and indices of condition of the minnow. Phoxinus phoxinus (L.) (Cyprinidae). were studied experimentally. Five ration levels over the range starvation to ad libitum and five temperatures over the range 5–15°C were used. The fish weighed 1-5-4 g. At each temperature, the relative dry matter content, lipid content and energy content increased with increased ration. The response of the protein content to ration was temperature-dependent. Temperature had a significant effect on body composition and energy content, but this effect was irregular. The Fulton condition factor was less sensitive to ration than the wet or dry liver-somatic index. Temperature had a significant effect on the condition factor and liver indices. Significant, positive correlations were found between growth rate, lipid content and the indices of condition. The liver indices were better predictors of growth rate than the condition factor or lipid content and may provide useful information on the physiological condition offish in field studies. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of dietary factors and exercise-associated factors on the response of IGF-I and its binding proteins (IGFBPs) during a period of increased physical activity. Twenty-nine men completed a 4-day (days 1-4) baseline period of a controlled energy balanced diet while maintaining their normal physical activity level followed by 7 days (days 5-11) of a 1,000 kcal/day increase in physical activity above their normal activity levels. Two subject groups, one sedentary (Sed, mean Vo(2peak): 39 mlxkg(-1)xmin(-1), n = 7) and one fit (FIT1, mean Vo(2peak): 56 ml.kg(-1)xmin(-1), n = 8) increased energy intake to maintain energy balance throughout the 7-day intervention. In two other fit subject groups (FIT2, n = 7 and FIT3, n = 7), energy intake remained at baseline resulting in a 1,000 kcal/day exercise-induced energy deficit. Of these, FIT2 received an adequate protein diet (0.9 g/kg), and FIT3 received a high-protein diet (1.8 g/kg). For all four groups, IGF-I, IGFBP-3, and the acid labile subunit (ALS) were significantly decreased by day 11 (27 +/- 4%, 10 +/- 2%, and 19 +/- 4%, respectively) and IGFBP-2 significantly increased by 49 +/- 21% following day 3. IGFBP-1 significantly increased only in the two negative energy balance groups, FIT2 (38 +/- 6%) and FIT3 (46 +/- 8%). Differences in initial fitness level and dietary protein intake did not alter the IGF-I system response to an acute increase in physical activity. Decreases in IGF-I were observed during a moderate increase in physical activity despite maintaining energy balance, suggesting that currently unexplained exercise-associated mechanisms, such as increased energy flux, regulate IGF-I independent of energy deficit. 相似文献

Electrical muscle stimulation devices (EMS) have been advertised to increase muscle strength, to decrease body weight and body fat, and to improve muscle firmness and tone in healthy individuals. This study sought to test those claims. Twenty-seven college-aged volunteers were assigned to either an EMS (n = 16) or control group (n = 11). The EMS group underwent stimulation 3 times per week following the manufacturer's recommendations, whereas the control group underwent concurrent sham stimulation sessions. Bilaterally, the muscles stimulated included the biceps femoris, quadriceps, biceps, triceps, and abdominals (rectus abdominus and obliques). An identical pre- and posttesting battery included measurements of body weight, body fat (via skinfolds), girths, isometric and isokinetic strength (biceps, triceps, quadriceps, hamstrings), and appearance (via photographs from the front, side, and back). EMS had no significant effect on the any of the measured parameters. Thus, claims relative to the effectiveness of EMS for the apparently healthy individual are not supported by the findings of this study. 相似文献

In the present study, we attempted to clarify the effects of lifestyle and body compositions on basal metabolism and to clarify the effects of physical training on thermoregulatory responses to cold. Basal metabolism, body compositions, and questionnaires regarding lifestyle were evaluated in 37 students. From multiple linear regression analysis, sex, muscle weight, fat intake, and diurnal temperature were selected as significant explanatory variables. In a second experiment, rectal and the skin temperature at 7 different points as well as the oxygen uptake of eight males were measured at 10 degrees C for 90 min before and after training. The decline in rectal temperature that was observed before training was not observed after training. In addition, rectal temperature was significantly higher at post-training than at pre-training. These results suggest that some lifestyle factors affect cold tolerance; in particular, daily activity might improve our ability to control heat radiation and basal heat production. 相似文献

This study investigated the influence of two approaches (mathematical transformation and statistical procedures), used to account for body composition [body mass or fat-free mass (FFM)], on associations between two measures of physical activity and energy expenditure determined by doubly labeled water (DLW). Complete data for these analyses were available for 136 African American (44.1%) and Hispanic (55.9%) women (mean age 50 +/- 7.3 yr). Total energy expenditure (TEE) by DLW was measured over 14 days. Physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) was computed as 0.90 x TEE - resting metabolic rate. During week 2, participants wore an accelerometer for 7 consecutive days and completed a 7-day diary. Pearson's product-moment correlations and three statistical procedures (multiple regressions, partial correlations, and allometric scaling) were used to assess the effect of body composition on associations. The methods-comparison analysis was used to study the effect of body composition on agreement. The statistical procedures demonstrated that associations improved when body composition was included in the model. The accelerometer explained a small but meaningful portion of the variance in TEE and PAEE after body mass was accounted for. The methods-comparison analysis confirmed that agreement with DLW was affected by the transformation. Agreement between the diary (transformed with body mass) and TEE reflected the association that exists between body mass and TEE. These results suggest that the accelerometer and diary accounted for a small portion of TEE and PAEE. Most of the variance in DLW-measured energy expenditure was explained by body mass or FFM. 相似文献

This study examined relationships among physical activity, body composition, and stress- and immunity-related variables in fifth grade children (10-11 yr) in Southern Ontario. The 29 boys and 32 girls, who participated in the study, performed a 20-m shuttle run for prediction of aerobic fitness. Bioelectrical impedance was used to assess relative body fat. Standardized questionnaires were used to determine physical activity-related variables and frequency of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). Resting saliva samples were collected and tested for resting cortisol and resting secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA). Subjects wore a pedometer for 48 h to estimate their average total distance traveled per day. SIgA was significantly correlated with reported URTIs but was not related to salivary cortisol, physical activity, fitness level, or relative body fat. Children who spent more time in sport activities and had higher aerobic fitness reported fewer "sick" days. Children with body fat higher than 25% reported significantly (P < 0.05) more sick days than the rest of the cohort. There were no gender differences in SIgA, URTI frequency, and cortisol levels. The test-retest reproducibility for salivary cortisol was 0.66 (P < 0.01), whereas long-term SIgA reproducibility was nonsignificant for repeated measurements taken after 6 wk. Resting secretory immunity was not strongly related to fitness and physical activity, but there was evidence that reduced physical activity and excess body fat can result in higher URTI incidence. 相似文献

A high-glycemic index (GI) diet has been shown to increase adiposity in rodents; however, the long-term metabolic effects of a low- and high-GI diet have not been examined. In this study, a total of 48 male 129SvPas mice were fed diets high in either rapidly absorbed carbohydrate (RAC; high GI) or slowly absorbed carbohydrate (SAC; low GI) for up to 40 wk. Diets were controlled for macronutrient and micronutrient content, differing only in starch type. Body composition and insulin sensitivity were measured longitudinally by DEXA scan and oral glucose tolerance test, respectively. Food intake, respiratory quotient, physical activity, and energy expenditure were assessed using metabolic cages. Despite having similar mean body weights, mice fed the RAC diet had 40% greater body fat by the end of the study and a mean 2.2-fold greater insulin resistance compared with mice fed the SAC diet. Respiratory quotient was higher in the RAC group, indicating comparatively less fat oxidation. Although no differences in energy expenditure were observed throughout the study, total physical activity was 45% higher for the SAC-fed mice after 38 wk of feeding. We conclude that, in this animal model, 1) the effect of GI on body composition is mediated by changes in substrate oxidation, not energy intake; 2) a high-GI diet causes insulin resistance; and 3) dietary composition can affect physical activity level. 相似文献

The activity of rat liver asparagine synthetase [EC 6.3.1.1]increased when animals maintained on 25% protein diet were placed on 15% or 6% protein diet. The enzyme activity level rose within one day, reached a maximum in 7 or 10 days after switching the diet and thereafter dropped gradually. During the purification of the enzyme from rats on 25% or 6% protein diet, the yield and increase of the specific activity were similar in the two groups. Combination of the liver extracts from two such groups demonstrated that the amount of endogeneous inhibitors of the enzyme did not change on replacing the diet. The elevation of the enzyme activity in rats fed 6% casein diet was suppressed by an injection of cycloheximide or actinomycin D. It is suggested that the change in the enzyme activity was due to alteration of the amount of the enzyme. 相似文献
