Background and Aims

Summer dormancy is an adaptive trait in geophytes inhabiting regions with a Mediterranean climate, allowing their survival through the hot and dry summers. Summer dormancy in Poa bulbosa is induced by increasing day-length and temperature and decreasing water availability during spring. Populations from arid habitats became dormant earlier than those from mesic habitats. Relaxation of dormancy was promoted by the hot, dry summer conditions. Here we test the hypothesis that dormancy relaxation is also delayed in ecotypes of P. bulbosa inhabiting arid regions, as a cautious strategy related to the greater unpredictability of autumn rains associated with decreasing precipitation.

Methods

Ecotypes collected across a precipitation gradient (100–1200 mm year−1) in the Mediterranean climate region were grown under similar conditions in a net-house in Israel. Differences among ecotypes in dormancy induction and dormancy relaxation were determined by measuring time to dormancy onset in spring, and time to sprouting after the first effective rain in autumn. Seasonal and ecotype variation in dormancy relaxation were assessed by measuring time to sprouting initiation, rate of sprouting and maximal sprouting of resting dry bulbs sampled in the net-house during late spring, and mid- and late summer, and planted in a wet substrate at temperatures promoting (10 °C) or limiting (20 °C) sprouting.

Key Results

Earlier dormancy in the spring and delayed sprouting in autumn were correlated with decreasing mean annual rainfall at the site of ecotype origin. Seasonal and ecotype differences in dormancy relaxation were expressed in bulbs planted at 20 °C. During the summer, time to sprouting decreased while rate of sprouting and maximal sprouting increased, indicating dormancy relaxation. Ecotypes from more arid sites across the rainfall gradient showed delayed onset of sprouting and lower maximal sprouting, but did not differ in rate of sprouting. Planting at 10 °C promoted sprouting and cancelled differences among ecotypes in dormancy relaxation.

Conclusions

Both the induction and the relaxation of summer dormancy in P. bulbosa are correlated with mean annual precipitation at the site of population origin. Ecotypes from arid habitats have earlier dormancy induction and delayed dormancy relaxation, compared with those from mesic habitats.  相似文献

Aims

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of future warming and drought on (1) the biochemical composition of above-ground biomass of forage plants (Festuca arundinacea and Dactylis glomerata), (2) the potential mineralization of this material in soil, and (3) its priming effect on native soil organic matter.

Methods

We sampled above-ground plant material from spring regrowth and summer regrowth of a climate change experiment. While in spring, the plants were well watered, the summer regrowth was exposed to drought and elevated temperature (+3 °C) by infrared heating of the canopy during 3 weeks. We assessed the elemental and isotopic composition, lignin and non-cellulosic carbohydrate content and composition of plant material grown under all three conditions. Its mineralization potential in soil and priming effects were evaluated during laboratory incubation.

Results

Warming had no significant effect on elemental and stable isotope composition of both plant materials. In contrast, it resulted in reduction of lignin content for both plant species and decrease of the lignin-to-N ratio for F. arundinacea and increased non-cellulosic carbohydrate content for D. glomerata. Summer regrowth was characterised by increase of δ13C values, which is consistent with variations in stomatal conductance due to water shortage. Moreover, summer drought induced an increase in N content leading to decrease of the C/N ratio and increase of lignin-to-N ratio of summer regrowth compared to spring regrowth. Differences in decomposition were small, while priming effects were more strongly altered by the different exposure to enviromental.

Conclusion

Our results provide direct experimental evidence that extreme climatic events (high temperature and precipitation deficit) have an influence on soil carbon storage particularly through their effect on priming of native soil organic matter induced by altered plant litter. These effects seem to be governed by alterations of stoichiometry and to a smaller extent by alterations of plant chemical composition.  相似文献

The effects of changes in solar UV-B on the growth and pigmentation of six grass species from cold-temperate grasslands (Lolium perenne, Lolium multiflorum, Festuca arundinacea, Festuca rubra, Phleum pratense and Dactylis glomerata) in spring and summer were studied. The grasses were grown in greenhouses with different foils, resulting in three treatments: no UV-B, 80% of ambient and 90% of ambient UV-BBE.(biologically effective UV-B). The results indicated important effects of ambient UV-B levels on grass, but the different species reacted in very different ways. Both morphology and biomass production were influenced by UV-B in some species. However, changes in biomass production did not necessarily occur within the same species as changes in morphology. The grasses were more sensitive in summer. Overall, only F. rubra was positively influenced by UV-B under all circumstances. The biomass of D. glomerata and L. perenne was reduced by UV-B in spring and summer. Morphological changes included reduced height and increased tillering. The sensitivity of the different species was partially explained by their ability to reduce their specific leaf area in response to UV-B. Only the more sensitive species showed increased production of protective pigments. Overall, there were important differences between the effect of a low level of UV-B, and the further increase in UV-B, indicating that several mechanisms are operating at different light levels.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Current agricultural practices are based on growing monocultures or binary mixtures over large areas, with a resultant impoverishing effect on biodiversity at several trophic levels. The effects of increasing the biodiversity of a sward mixture on dry matter yield and unsown species invasion were studied.

Methods

A field experiment involving four grassland species [two grasses – perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) – and two legumes – red clover (Trifolium pratense) and white clover (Trifolium repens)], grown in monocultures and mixtures in accordance with a simplex design, was carried out. The legumes were included either as single varieties or as one of two broad genetic-base composites. The experiment was harvested three times a year over three years; dry matter yield and yield of unsown species were determined at each harvest. Yields of individual species and interactions between all species present were estimated through a statistical modelling approach.

Key Results

Species diversity produced a strong positive yield effect that resulted in transgressive over-yielding in the second and third years. Using broad genetic-base composites of the legumes had a small impact on yield and species interactions. Invasion by unsown species was strongly reduced by species diversity, but species identity was also important. Cocksfoot and white clover (with the exception of one broad genetic-base composite) reduced invasion, while red clover was the most invaded species.

Conclusions

The results show that it is possible to increase, and stabilize, the yield of a grassland crop and reduce invasion by unsown species by increasing its species diversity.Key words: Cocksfoot, Dactylis glomerata, diversity effect, invasion, legumes, perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne, red clover, Trifolium pratense, simplex design, statistical modelling, transgressive over-yielding, white clover, T. repens  相似文献

Abstract Seven grass species were grown in monocultures and in multispecies mixtures along a gradient of total nutrient levels that ranged from 1/64 to 16× the normal level of nutrient solution. The seven grasses represented three ecological groups: (i) three perennial species native to Australia (Themeda triandra, Poa labillardieri and Danthonia carphoides); (ii) two introduced annuals (Vulpia bromoides and Hordeum leporinum); and (iii) two introduced perennials (Lolium perenne and Dactylis glomerata). We hypothesized that the native grasses would prove less competitive when grown at increased nutrient levels than those introduced from Europe. Results supported the hypothesis. The native species were unable to compete in mixtures even at the lowest nutrient level, where T. triandra was the most productive species in monoculture. Lolium perenne and Dactylis glomerata dominated mixtures at intermediate nutrient levels. The responses of the annual introduced grasses differed in that Vulpia bromoides showed an optimum at intermediate nutrient levels in both monoculture and in mixtures, whereas Hordeum leporinum dominated at the highest nutrient levels in mixture but was suppressed by V. bromoides, L. perenne and D. glomerata at intermediate levels. The results are discussed in terms of predicting species responses in mixtures from their performance in monocultures as well as in terms of previous observations on the sequential changes in botanical composition of south‐eastern Australian grasslands after 150 years of continuous grazing by sheep.  相似文献

Poa bulbosa L. plants became dormant in long days (16 h), whilein short days (8 h) they remained non-dormant for extended periods.Morphologically, the onset of dormancy was expressed by theformation of a true bulb at the base of every tiller, by thecessation of tillering and leaf emergence and, finally, by thedrying-up of the leaves. Low temperature delayed the onset ofdormancy but did not prevent it. This effect of temperaturemay explain the delayed onset of dormancy observed in naturalpopulations under a cool climate at a hilly habitat, comparedto plants growing under a warmer climate, at a lower, coastal-plainhabitat. Dormancy could be induced under short days by pre-exposureof the plants to a limited number of long days. The responsewas proportional to the number of long days given. The adaptivesignificance of the results for plant survival in a Mediterraneanclimate is discussed. Poa bulbosa L., summer dormancy, photoperiod, temperature, leaf emergence, bulbs, tillers  相似文献

Lockyer, D. R. 1985. The effect of sulphur dioxide on the growthof Lolium perenne L., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Dactylis glomerataL., and Phleum pratense L.?J. exp. Bot. 36: 1851-1859. Fouragriculturally important grasses, Lolium perenne L., Loliummultiflorum Lam., Dactylis glomerata L. and Phleum pratenseL. were exposed to sulphur dioxide (SO2) in a system of exposurechambers. The plants were exposed for a total of 43 d to meanconcentrations of SO2 in the air of 0,87 or 448 (µg m–3and herbage was harvested twice. All four grasses showed chloroticlesions after exposure to the highest concentration of SO2.The effect of SO2 on the yield of herbage was statisticallysignificant only at the second harvest and at the highest concentration;the dry weights of shoots of D. glomerata and L. perenne werereduced by 33% and 16% respectively. Significant effects ofSO2 were also found on the 'transpiration coefficients' measuredfor D. glomerata and P. pratense. The grasses differed in theiruptake of sulphur from the atmosphere but this was not relatedto their sensitivity to SO2. Total–S concentration inthe shoots of L. perenne, L. multiflorum and D. glomerata increasedalmost linearly in response to increasing SO2 concentration;with P. pratense only the highest SO2 concentration raised total-Sabove the level in control plants. These increases were almostentirely due to the accumulation of sulphate–S. Key words: Sulphur diozide, Lolium perenne, Lolium multiflorum, Dactylis glomerata, Phleum pratense  相似文献

Background and Aims

Versatility in the reproductive development of pseudoviviparous grasses in response to growth conditions is an intriguing reproduction strategy. To better understand this strategy, this study examined variation in flowering and pseudovivipary among populations, co-occurring clones within populations, and among tillers in individual clones of Poa bulbosa, a summer-dormant geophytic grass that reproduces sexually by seed, and asexually by basal tiller bulbs and bulbils formed in proliferated panicles.

Methods

Clones were collected from 17 populations across a rainfall gradient. Patterns of reproduction were monitored for 11 years in a common garden experiment and related to interannual differences in climatic conditions. Intraclonal variation in flowering and pseudovivipary was studied in a phytotron, under daylengths marginal for flowering induction.

Key Results

Clones showed large temporal variability in their reproductive behaviour. They flowered in some years but not in others, produced normal or proliferated panicles in different years, or became dormant without flowering. Proliferating clones did not show a distinct time sequence of flowering and proliferation across years. Populations differed in incidence of flowering and proliferation. The proportion of flowering clones increased with decreasing rainfall at the site of population origin, but no consistent relationship was found between flowering and precipitation in the common garden experiment across years. In contrast, flowering decreased at higher temperatures during early growth stages after bulb sprouting. Pulses of soil fertilization greatly increased the proportion of flowering clones and panicle production. High intraclonal tiller heterogeneity was observed, as shown by the divergent developmental fates of daughter plants arising from bulbs from the same parent clone and grown under similar conditions. Panicle proliferation was enhanced by non-inductive 8 h short days, while marginally inductive 12 h days promoted normal panicles.

Conclusions

Interannual variation in flowering and proliferation in P. bulbosa clones was attributed to differences in the onset of the rainy season, resulting in different daylength and temperature conditions during the early stages of growth, during which induction of flowering and dormancy occurs.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Survival of many herbaceous species in Mediterranean habitats during the dry, hot summer depends on the induction of summer dormancy by changes in environmental conditions during the transition between the winter (growth) season to the summer (resting) season, i.e. longer days, increasing temperature and drought. In Poa bulbosa, a perennial geophytic grass, summer dormancy is induced by long days, and the induction is enhanced by high temperature. Here the induction of summer dormancy in a Mediterranean perennial grass by water deficit under non-inductive photoperiodic conditions is reported for the first time. METHODS: Plants grown under 22/16 degrees C and non-inductive short-day (9 h, SD) were subjected to water deficit (WD), applied as cycles of reduced irrigation, or sprayed with ABA solutions. They were compared with plants in which dormancy was induced by transfer from SD to inductive long-day (16 h, LD). Responses of two contrasting ecotypes, from arid and mesic habitats were compared. Dormancy relaxation in bulbs from these ecotypes and treatments was studied by comparing sprouting capacity in a wet substrate at 10 degrees C of freshly harvested bulbs to that of dry-stored bulbs at 40 degrees C. Endogenous ABA in the bulbs was determined by monoclonal immunoassay analysis. KEY RESULTS: Dormancy was induced by WD and by ABA application in plants growing under non-inductive SD. Dormancy induction by WD was associated with increased levels of ABA. Bulbs were initially deeply dormant and their sprouting capacity was very low, as in plants in which dormancy was induced by LD. Dormancy was released after 2 months dry storage at 40 degrees C in all treatments. ABA levels were not affected by dormancy relaxation. CONCLUSIONS: Summer dormancy in P. bulbosa can be induced by two alternative and probably additive pathways: (1) photoperiodic induction by long-days, and (2) water deficit. Increased levels of endogenous ABA are involved in both pathways.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Relationships between autumn flowering, precipitation and temperature of plant species of Mediterranean coastal shrublands have been described, but not analysed experimentally. These relationships were analysed for two species of co-occurring, dominant, autumn-flowering shrubs, Globularia alypum and Erica multiflora, over 4 years and in experimentally generated drought and warming conditions. The aim was to improve predictions about the responses and adaptations of flowering of Mediterranean vegetation to climate change.

Methods

Beginning of anthesis and date of maximum flowering intensity (‘peak date’) were monitored over 4 years (2001–2004) on a garrigue land type in the noth-east of the Iberian Peninsula. Two experimental treatments were applied, increased temperature (+0·73°C) and reduced soil moisture (–17%) relative to untreated plots.

Key Results

Flowering of Globularia alypum and Erica multiflora differed greatly between years depending on the precipitation of the previous months and the date of the last substantial rainfall (>10 mm). Globularia alypum flowered once or twice (unimodal or bimodal) as the result of differences in the distribution and magnitude of precipitation in late-spring and summer (when floral buds develop). The drought treatment delayed and decreased flowering of Globularia alypum in 2001 and delayed flowering in 2002. Warming extended the period between the beginning of flowering and the end of the second peak for autumn flowering in 2001 and also increased peak intensity in 2002. Flowering of Erica multiflora was unaffected by either treatment.

Conclusions

Autumn flowering of Globularia alypum and Erica multiflora is more dependent on water availability than on temperature. Considerable inter-annual plasticity in the beginning of anthesis and peak date and on unimodal or bimodal flowering constitutes a ‘safe strategy’ for both species in relation to varying precipitation and temperature. However, severe changes in precipitation in spring and summer may severely affect flowering of Globularia alypum but not Erica multiflora, thus affecting development/structure of the ecosystem if such conditions persist.Key words: Globularia alypum, Erica multiflora, autumn flowering, drought, global warming, Mediterranean  相似文献

Background and Aims

Is the release of allelochemicals by the dominant tussock grass Festuca paniculata responsible for its dominance by inhibiting growth of neighbour grasses in subalpine grasslands? As such a community is also structured by mowing practices, what could be the impact of mowing on allelopathy?

Methods

A design was used that isolated allelopathy from resource competition by separating donor plants (Festuca paniculata) from target plants (F. paniculata, Dactylis glomerata and Bromus erectus). Leachates from donor pots containing bare soil, unmown F. paniculata or mown F. paniculata continuously irrigated target pots containing seedlings. Activated carbon was added in half of the target pots to adsorb potential allelochemicals. C and N analyses of target potting soil were used to test for any effect of treatments on resources. Total phenol concentration was measured in the solutions flowing from donor to target pots.

Results

Festuca paniculata leachates inhibited seedling growth of D. glomerata and B. erectus. Inhibition was correlated with polyphenol concentration, and was not due to resource competition for nitrogen. Mowing the leaves of the donor plants did not significantly increase this inhibition. The activated carbon treatment was not conclusive as it inhibited the seedling growing under control pots with only bare soil.

Conclusions

The results suggest that allelopathy may be at least partly responsible for F. paniculata dominance in subalpine meadows by inhibition of colonization by neighbouring species.Key words: Allelopathy, chemical interference, mowing, activated carbon, polyphenols, Festuca paniculata, Bromus erectus, Dactylis glomerata, subalpine, competition  相似文献

The effect of different grazing regimes on pasture vegetation was studied during the intensive grazing of heifers in the Jizerské hory mountains during 1993–1997. The vegetation was monitored in 3 pairs of permanent 1×1 m plots using a continuous grid of nine 0.33 × 0.33 m subplots. We applied continuous stocking and rotational grazing. Vegetation varied as a result of time and differences between treatments. Several prostrate dicotyledonous species (Trifolium repens, Taraxacum sp.,Bellis perennis andLeontodon autumnalis) increased under continuous stocking. This treatment also promoted the growth of the perennial grassLolium perenne, which was able to cope with frequent defoliation. Tall grasses sensitive to frequent defoliation (Poa trivialis, Holcus mollis, Alopecurus pratensis, Dactylis glomerata andElytrigia repens) were more abundant in rotationally grazed paddocks. Species diversity was not significantly influenced by the different grazing systems. The decrease in the potential sward height under continuous stocking revealed the replacing of tall dominants by lower species. Our results indicate that different grazing systems alter the composition and structure of grassland vegetation. Defining the intensity of grazing under continuous stocking or rotational grazing is complex due to the different stocking rates and the heights of sward during a grazing season. Information about pasture management should therefore involve not only grazing intensity but also the grazing system used.  相似文献

Background and Aims Summer dormancy in perennial grasseshas been studied inadequately, despite its potential to enhanceplant survival and persistence in Mediterranean areas. The aimof the present work was to characterize summer dormancy anddehydration tolerance in two cultivars of Dactylis glomerata(dormant ‘Kasbah’, non-dormant ‘Oasis’)and their hybrid using physiological indicators associated withthese traits. • Methods Dehydration tolerance was assessed in a glasshouseexperiment, while seasonal metabolic changes which produce putativeprotectants for drought, such as carbohydrates and dehydrinsthat might be associated with summer dormancy, were analysedin the field. • Key Results The genotypes differed in their ability tosurvive increasing soil water deficit: lethal soil water potential(s) was –3·4 MPa for ‘Kasbah’ (althoughnon-dormant), –1·3 MPa for ‘Oasis’,and –1·6 MPa for their hybrid. In contrast, lethalwater content of apices was similar for all genotypes (approx.0·45 g H2O g d. wt–1), and hence the greater survivalof ‘Kasbah’ can be ascribed to better drought avoidancerather than dehydration tolerance. In autumn-sown plants, ‘Kasbah’had greatest dormancy, the hybrid was intermediate and ‘Oasis’had none. The more dormant the genotype, the lower the metabolicactivity during summer, and the earlier the activity declinedin spring. Decreased monosaccharide content was an early indicatorof dormancy induction. Accumulation of dehydrins did not correlatewith stress tolerance, but dehydrin content was a function ofthe water status of the tissues, irrespective of the soil moisture.A protein of approx. 55 kDa occurred in leaf bases of the mostdormant cultivar even in winter. • Conclusions Drought avoidance and summer dormancy arecorrelated but can be independently expressed. These traitsare heritable, allowing selection in breeding programmes.  相似文献

Background

Developmental instability of shelled gastropods is measured as deviations from a perfect equiangular (logarithmic) spiral. We studied six species of gastropods at ‘Evolution Canyons I and II’ in Carmel and the Galilee Mountains, Israel, respectively. The xeric, south-facing, ‘African’ slopes and the mesic, north-facing, ‘European’ slopes have dramatically different microclimates and plant communities. Moreover, ‘Evolution Canyon II’ receives more rainfall than ‘Evolution Canyon I.’

Methodology/Principal Findings

We examined fluctuating asymmetry, rate of whorl expansion, shell height, and number of rotations of the body suture in six species of terrestrial snails from the two ‘Evolution Canyons.’ The xeric ‘African’ slope should be more stressful to land snails than the ‘European’ slope, and ‘Evolution Canyon I’ should be more stressful than ‘Evolution Canyon II.’ Only Eopolita protensa jebusitica showed marginally significant differences in fluctuating helical asymmetry between the two slopes. Contrary to expectations, asymmetry was marginally greater on the ‘European’ slope. Shells of Levantina spiriplana caesareana at ‘Evolution Canyon I,’ were smaller and more asymmetric than those at ‘Evolution Canyon II.’ Moreover, shell height and number of rotations of the suture were greater on the north-facing slopes of both canyons.

Conclusions/Significance

Our data is consistent with a trade-off between drought resistance and thermoregulation in snails; Levantina was significantly smaller on the ‘African’ slope, for increasing surface area and thermoregulation, while Eopolita was larger on the ‘African’ slope, for reducing water evaporation. In addition, ‘Evolution Canyon I’ was more stressful than Evolution Canyon II’ for Levantina.  相似文献

Background and aims

Plant litter quality and water availability both control decomposition. The interaction of both parameters was never studied. We used a grassland site, where litter of contrasting quality, i.e. green litter (fresh leaves; high quality) and brown litter (dead leaves, which underwent senescence but which are still attached to the plant; low quality), is returned to soil. Green and brown litter were exposed in the field under regular weather and drought conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of drought on the decomposition of both litter types.

Methods

We incubated green and brown litter of three different grassland species (Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea and Dactylis glomerata) alone or as litter mixture (1/3 of each of the three grassland species) in litterbags for 28?weeks. Drought conditions were simulated by rainfall exclusion. After incubation, litter residues were analysed for C and nitrogen (N) content and stable isotope composition. Additionally, we determined the response of the lignin and carbohydrate signatures to the contrasting conditions.

Results

C decomposition kinetics of green and brown litter under drought conditions could be explained by two pools of contrasting turnover times. Drought decreased leaf litter C and N decomposition by more than 50% compared to regular weather conditions, mainly by strongly decreasing the decomposition rate constants. The lowest C decomposition occurred for mixtures of litter from all three grassland species. Brown litter showed on average 15% higher reduction in carbon decomposition than green litter following drought. Lignin content remained similar for green and brown litter after drought and regular weather conditions, while sugar content remained similar in green litter and decreased by 18% for brown litter under drought conditions.

Conclusions

Our results showed different response of decomposition of litter with contrasting quality to drought. Low quality brown litter is likely to be more affected than high quality green litter. Thus, litter quality must be taken into account, when assessing the effect of drought on decomposition.  相似文献

Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.). perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.) and Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.) plantswere grown on deep (75–95 cm) columns of soil in glasshousesand growth rooms with and without irrigation. The species inwhich growth declined least rapidly after water had been withheldwere those which transpired most slowly. During early establishmentin the glasshouse cocksfoot transpired least because of slowroot growth. In the growth room, when root systems were deeperand denser, perennial ryegrass transpired least because of lowleaf water conductance. Results are discussed in relation to(a) drought resistance in the three species; (b) breeding forincreased drought resistance through modifying root distributionand leaf water conductance; and (c) the use of isolated soilcolumns in water relations studies. Grasses (Poaceae) pollen is a major cause for allergic diseases worldwide. Pollen monitoring in the atmosphere is of primary importance for symptoms interpretation and therapy planning. Microscopic pollen identification and counts do not allow the detection at species or genus level because of the stenopalynous nature of the family. Nevertheless, the assessment of the flowering phenology of different species would be important, because not all grass allergens are cross-reacting and allergic patients could be differentially sensitized. In this work, a phenological survey was carried out in five stations located on the urban territory of Perugia (Central Italy), from April to September 2015, recording the alternation between flowering phenophases of 19 grass species and estimating their contribution to the airborne pollen load of the area through the calculation of a Phenological Index. Moreover, pollen grains of the different species were collected and observed, confirming the impossibility to make a discrimination during microscope pollen counts. The prevailing grasses in terms of contribution to the pollen detection in the studied area resulted to be Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne during spring and early summer, and Cynodon dactylon during late summer. Data should be validated repeating the survey in successive years and possibly using biomolecular tools, but the obtained information could be relevant for diagnosis and treatment of grass pollen allergies.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, we investigated the host suitability of 24 poaceous plants for Trigonotylus caelestialium (Kirkaldy) and Stenotus rubrovittatus (Matsumura). More than 50?% of the nymphs of both bugs reached the adult stage on Poa annua L., Alopecurus aequalis Sobol. var. amurensis (Komar.), Poa sphondylodes Trin., Hordeum murinum L., Agrostis clavata Trin. ssp. matsumurae (Hack. ex Honda), and Lolium multiflorum Lam. In addition, a similar number of S. rubrovittatus nymphs reached the adult stage on Dactylis glomerata L. and Digitaria violascens Link. However, a high percentage of T. caelestialium adults emerged on both spikelets and leaves of the host plants, whereas a lower percentage of S. rubrovittatus adults emerged on leaves than on spikelets. While the numbers of T. caelestialium adults that emerged on spikelets and leaves were similar, those reared on spikelets had a shorter developmental period and longer forewings than those reared on leaves, indicating that spikelets were more suitable for growth. In addition, more adults of both species emerged on plants with ears that arise during the spring and early summer than on plants with ears that arise during the summer and fall. Therefore, the development of these bugs is dependent on the season of ear emergence.  相似文献

The oviposition preferences of Oscinella frit, O. vastator, O. nitidissima, O. albiseta andO. nigerrima for differenct Gramineae were investigated in the laboratory. O. frit, laid most eggs on oats, Lolium multiflorum and Festuca rubra, relatively few eggs were laid on barley and virtually none on Dactylis glomerata None of the other Osinella species oviposted on cereals. Of the other species, O. vastator appeared to be the most polyphagous and the preferred hosts were L. multiflorum, Lolium perenne and Festuca pratensis; few eggs were laid on either F. rubra, Agrostis tenuis or Poa pratensis. The host ranges of the remaining species were much more limited. Although a few eggs were laid by O. nitidissima on Lolium, the preferred host was A. tenuis. Oscinella albiseta oviposited only on D. glomerata whilst nearly all the eggs laid by O. nigerrima were deposited on shoots of Arrhenatherum elatius. The distribution of eggs by O. frit on L. multiflorum and A. tenuis was different from that on oats; on grasses most eggs were laid inside withered leaf sheaths whereas on oats most were deposited inside the coleoptile. The oviposition sites of O. nitidissima, O. nigerrima and O. albiseta on their respective host grasses were similar to those of O. frit on grasses. O. frit laid most eggs on grasses which were at the five-leaf stage and tailoring.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum can attack >400 plant species worldwide. Very few studies have investigated host–pathogen interactions at the plant surface and cellular level in resistant genotypes of oilseed rape/canola (Brassica napus).

Methods

Infection processes of S. sclerotiorum were examined on two B. napus genotypes, one resistant cultivar ‘Charlton’ and one susceptible ‘RQ001-02M2’ by light and scanning electron microscopy from 2 h to 8 d post-inoculation (dpi).

Key Results

The resistant ‘Charlton’ impeded fungal growth at 1, 2 and 3 dpi, suppressed formation of appresoria and infection cushions, caused extrusion of protoplast from hyphal cells and produced a hypersensitive reaction. At 8 dpi, whilst in ‘Charlton’ pathogen invasion was mainly confined to the upper epidermis, in the susceptible ‘RQ001-02M2’, colonization up to the spongy mesophyll cells was evident. Calcium oxalate crystals were found in the upper epidermis and in palisade cells in susceptible ‘RQ001-02M2’ at 6 dpi, and throughout leaf tissues at 8 dpi. In resistant ‘Charlton’, crystals were not observed at 6 dpi, whereas at 8 dpi they were mainly confined to the upper epidermis. Starch deposits were also more prevalent in ‘RQ001-02M2’.

Conclusions

This study demonstrates for the first time at the cellular level that resistance to S. sclerotiorum in B. napus is a result of retardation of pathogen development, both on the plant surface and within host tissues. The resistance mechanisms identified in this study will be useful for engineering disease-resistant genotypes and for developing markers for screening for resistance against this pathogen.  相似文献
