Sexual isolation, the reduced tendency to mate, is one of the reproductive barriers that prevent gene flow between different species. Various species‐specific signals during courtship contribute to sexual isolation between species. Drosophila albomicans and D. nasuta are closely related species of the nasuta subgroup within the Drosophila immigrans group and are distributed in allopatry. We analyzed mating behavior and courtship as well as cuticular hydrocarbon profiles within and between species. Here, we report that these two species randomly mated with each other. We did not observe any sexual isolation between species or between strains within species by multiple‐choice tests. Significant difference in the courtship index was detected between these two species, but males and females of both species showed no discrimination against heterospecific partners. Significant quantitative variations in cuticular hydrocarbons between these two species were also found, but the cuticular hydrocarbons appear to play a negligible role in both courtship and sexual isolation between these two species. In contrast to the evident postzygotic isolation, the lack of sexual isolation between these two species suggests that the evolution of premating isolation may lag behind that of the intergenomic incompatibility, which might be driven by intragenomic conflicts.  相似文献

By analyzing the progeny of crosses involving brown eye mutants and the wild types in two members of Drosophila nasuta subgroup namely D. n. nasuta and D. n. albomicans we could show that the mutant gene is recessive, located in the chromosome 2 and the alleles of this gene are present at different loci. A study of fitness in the eye color mutants in comparison with the wild types revealed that D. n. nasuta mutant has higher viability at both 25 ± 1°C and ambient temperatures; while D. n. albomicans mutant has faster rate of development only at 25 ± 1°C. Quantitative analysis of eye pigments in the mutants revealed that there is biosynthesis of both pteridines and xanthommatins unlike in bw/bw of D. melanogaster, where only xanthommatins are synthesized. In both the species, the pteridine quantities in mutants are similar; whereas xanthommatin quantity in is 10 times higher than that of . Further, the F1 progeny of intraspecific crosses (wild type X mutant) are found to have high amounts of pteridine, even when compared with parental wild type. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Drosophila elegans is a flower-breeding species occurring in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. Two morphs, brown and black, are known in this species. The brown morph is recorded from southern China, Philippines, Indonesia and New Guinea, while the black morph is from the Okinawa islands and Taiwan. The present crossing experiment suggests that the difference of body colour between them was due to alleles on a single locus or closely linked loci on an autosome; F1 hybrids exhibited intermediate body colour. Female choice tests revealed asymmetrical premating isolation between the brown and black morphs; isolation indices ranged from 0.55 to 0.83 in the tests using females of the black morph (deviation from random mating was significant), but from — 0.03 to 0.50 in the tests using females of the brown morph (deviation from random mating was insignificant). However, body colour was not used as a criterion of mate choice by females. A weak and asymmetrical postmating isolation was also observed between the brown and black morphs; viability was lowered in F2 progenies of crosses between females of the brown morph and males of the black morph. No premating or postmating isolation was observed between geographic strains of each morph. Under irradiation, body temperature was higher in the black morph than in the brown morph. On the other hand, no significant difference was observed in tolerance to cold, heat and desiccation between the brown and black morphs.  相似文献

Two species of the Drosophila nasuta subgroup of the Drosophila immigrans group, D. sulphurigaster albostrigata and D. nasuta albomicans were investigated in this study. Collections of both species were made from Phuket, Thailand. Both species have similar salivary chromosomes, with four autosomal arms and one sex chromosome arm, and both are highly polymorphic for paracentric inversions. D. s. albostrigata accounted for the majority of the isolines collected and exhibited the greater number of inversions. One inversion, C1, was common to both species, indicating common ancestry.A non-random distribution of inversions was observed on the proximal end of chromosome II in both D. s. albostrigata and D. n. albomicans. An inter-collection comparison revealed that both rigid and flexible chromosomal polymorphism were operating in the two species, with a seasonal variation noted for one inversion in D. s. albostrigata. A non-random association of two inversions was observed in D. n. albomicans.Based on a comparison of the indices of crossing over, both D. s. albostrigata and D. n. albomicans were found to be more heterozygous than in previous studies, with D. n. albomicans appearing to have evolved further than D. s. albostrigata.Based on a thesis submitted for the degree of Ph. D. at the University of Queensland.  相似文献

In the two Drosophila races D. n. nasuta and D. n. albomicans the nucleolar-organizer regions (NORs) have been localized on metaphase chromosomes by a combined acid treatment and silver-staining technique. In both Drosophila races one NOR is present on the heterochromatic Y chromosomes and another on the microchromosomes. Such a NOR distribution has not yet been reported in Drosophila. It is suggested that this distribution has evolved from an original type with NORs on the X and Y chromosomes.  相似文献

Drosophila nasuta (2n = 8) and Drosophila albomicans (2n = 6) are cross-fertile allopatric sibling chromosomal races of the nasuta subgroup of Drosophila. Hybrids of these races can be maintained for any number of generations. Some of the introgressed hybrid lineages of D. nasuta and D. albomicans, after passing through a transient phase of karyotypic polymorphism, ended up with a stable karyotype whose composition is different from those of the parental races. Such hybrid populations were called cytoraces, in which the chromosomes of D. nasuta and D. albomicans are represented in different combinations. The karyotypic composition of 16 such cytoraces have been presented and discussed with reference to evolutionary strategies such as balancing selection, directional selection, and sex-specific effect on different components of the evolving karyotypes.  相似文献

Male accessory gland secretions, which have a role to play in reproduction have been investigated. The number of cells that make up the gland, the quantity of secretions synthesized and the influence of these secretions on fecundity of the female have been studied in D. n. nasuta, D. n. albomicans and their F1 progeny. The results revealed that the hybrid males show a trend towards D. n. nasuta in the synthesis of male accessory gland proteins and the fecundity of the female is influenced more by its genetic constitution rather than the quantity of accessory gland secretions.  相似文献

Understanding the biological conditions and the genetic basis of early stages of sexual isolation and speciation is an outstanding question in evolutionary biology. It is unclear how much genetic and phenotypic variation for mating preferences and their phenotypic cues is segregating within widespread and human-commensal species in nature. A recent case of incipient sexual isolation between Zimbabwe and cosmopolitan populations of the human-commensal fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster indicates that such species may initiate the process of sexual isolation. However, it is still unknown whether other geographical populations have undergone evolution of mating preferences. In this study we present new data on multiple-choice mating tests revealing partial sexual isolation between the United States and Caribbean populations. We relate our findings to African populations, showing that Caribbean flies are partially sexually isolated from Zimbabwe flies, but mate randomly with West African flies, which also show partial sexual isolation from the United States and Zimbabwe flies. Thus, Caribbean and West African populations seem to exhibit distinct mating preferences relative to populations in the United States and in Zimbabwe. These results suggest that widespread and human-commensal species may harbor different types of mating preferences across their geographical ranges.  相似文献

Drosophila nasuta albomicans (with 2n = 6), contains a pair of metacentric neo-sex chromosomes. Phylogenetically these are products of centric fusion between ancestral sex (X, Y) chromosomes and an autosome (chromosome 3). The polytene chromosome complement of males with a neo-X- and neo-Y-chromosomes has revealed asynchrony in replication between the two arms of the neo-sex chromosomes. The arm which represents the ancestral X-chromosome is faster replicating than the arm which represents ancestral autosome. The latter arm of the neo-sex chromosome is synchronous with other autosomes of the complement. We conclude that one arm of the neo-X/Y is still mimicking the features of an autosome while the other arm has the features of a classical X/Y-chromosome. This X-autosome translocation differs from the other evolutionary X-autosome translocations known in certain species ofDrosophila.  相似文献

To test whether character displacement for reproductive isolation between Drosophila bipectinata and Drosophila malerkotliana exists, the degree of sexual isolation was measured between their sympatric and allopatric populations. Although the isolation indices vary in different crosses, the average isolation index for sympatric populations is very close to that for allopatric populations. This shows no difference in the degree of sexual isolation between sympatric and allopatric populations of D. bipectinata and D. malerkotliana. Thus there is no evidence for the existence of character displacement for sexual isolation between these two closely related sympatric species.  相似文献

Reciprocal crosses were made between an Indian strain of D. n. nasuta (2n=8) and the Thailand strain of D. n. albomicana (2n=6). Hybrids were fertile. They were inbred for over four years. Later, the karyotypes of the hybrid populations were analysed. In the hybrid progeny of the cross between D. n. nasuta females and D. n. albomicana males, there were six types of kaotypes. Of these, only two types had a diploid content of chromosomes. They were males with 2n=7 and females with 2n= 8 , while others were aneuploids. This hybrid population is designated as Cytorace III. On the other hand, hybrid progeny of the reciprocal cross had 2n-8 in both males and females; and there was no karyotypic variation. This hybrid population is named as Cytorace IV. The composition of these new karyotypes of Cytorace III and IV have been presented and compared with those of Cytorace I and II reported by Ramachandra and Ranganath (1986).  相似文献

The band-interband pattern of salivary gland chromosome 2R in Drosophila nasuta albomicans (division 53-83) was studied by light (LM) and electron microscopy (EM) using squash preparations and surface-spread polytene (SSP) chromosome preparations, respectively. LM and EM maps were compiled. Based on the digitized EM patterns of five homologous SSP chromosomes a computerized chromosome map was plotted. The EM pattern analysis showed a total number of 662 chromosome bands with an almost 98% increase compared with the LM analysis of squash preparations. The majority (about 92%) of interband lengths in SSP chromosome 2R ranged between 0.25 and 0.64 microns, which equal about 0.8-2.1 kb of totally extended DNA or 2.5-6.4 kb of DNA, if a DNA packing ratio of 0.1 microns/kb is assumed for the interbands of SSP chromosomes.  相似文献

The origin of premating reproductive isolation continues to help elucidate the process of speciation and is the central event in the evolution of biological species. Therefore, during the process of species formation the diverging populations must acquire some means of reproductive isolation so that the genes from one gene pool are prevented from dispersing freely into a foreign gene pool. In the genus Drosophila, the phenomenon of behavioural reproductive isolation, which is an important type of premating (prezygotic) reproductive isolating mechanisms, has been extensively studied and interesting data have been documented. In many cases incomplete sexual isolation has been observed and the pattern and degree of isolation within and between the species have often been used to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships. The present review documents an overview of speciation mediated through behavioural incompatibility in different species groups of Drosophila with particular reference to the models proposed on the basis of one-sided ethological isolation to predict the direction of evolution. This study is crucial for understanding the mechanism of speciation through behavioural incompatibility and also for an understanding of speciation genetics in future prospects.  相似文献

The band-interband pattern (division 28-52) of salivary gland chromosome 2L in Drosophila nasuta albomicans was studied by light (LM) and electron microscopy (EM) using squash preparations and surface-spread polytene (SSP) chromosome preparations, respectively. LM and EM maps were complied. Based on the digitized EM patterns of five homologous SSP chromosomes a computerized EM chromosome map was plotted. The EM pattern analysis showed a total number of 479 chromosome bands with an almost 83% increase compared with the LM analysis of squash preparations. By extrapolation of the data from 39% of the polytene genome analysed so far in D. n. albomicans, a total number of 2,926 chromosome bands was calculated. This is almost the same number of bands as was calculated earlier for Drosophila hydei using the same SSP chromosome preparation technique. The data in the literature concerning variations in the number of chromosome bands in different Drosophila species, the various chromosome preparation techniques adopted, and the different criteria used for the EM pattern analyses, are discussed.

The microchromosomes of the totally cross fertile Drosophila races, D. nasuta nasuta and D. nasuta albomicana have been studied in nietaphase and polytene nuclei. In metaphase the microchromosome of D. n. albomicana is nearly five times longer than the homologous chromosome in D. n. nasuta. As shown by C-banding these length differences are mainly due to a massive addition of heterochromatin to the D. n. albomicana chromosome. In polytene nuclei these striking heterochromatin differences between the microchromosomes of the two Drosophila races cannot be observed. Analysis of the polytene banding pattern shows that the microchromosomes of both races differ by an inversion and by a duplication, present only in D. n, albomicana. The location and orientation of the duplicated regions in D. n. albomicana leads to a specific loop like chromosome configuration. On the basis of these differences within the Drosophila races studied it is assumed that the karyotype of D. n. albomicana is a more recent evolutionary product.  相似文献
