A comparative study of 215 sedentary (no regular physical exercise undertaken) and 313 physically active (regular physical exercise undertaken) Bengalee boys aged 10-17 years was undertaken to investigate the differences in overall adiposity (body mass index), subcutaneous adiposity (skinfolds) and body composition (percent body fat, fat mass and fat mass index). Both groups had a similar age. The results revealed that boys who did not undertake regular physical exercise (NPE) had a significantly greater mean body mass index (BMI) compared with those who undertook regular physical exercise (PE); p < 0.001. The means for all the skinfolds as well as percent body fat (PBF), fat mass (FM) and fat mass index (FMI) were significantly higher among the NPE group. The percentile distributions of all these variables and indices were consistently higher among the NPE group. The results of ANOVA of physical exercise (PE = yes, NPE = no) and PBF, FM and FMI, with age as covariate, revealed that PE had a significant negative effect on all these measures of body composition even after controlling for the impact of age. The means in each case were greater among the NPE group. In conclusion, this study provided evidence that Bengalee boys, who undertook regular physical exercise, had significantly less adiposity compared with those who did not undertake regular physical exercise.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of exercise training on oxidative stress in sickle cell trait carriers. Plasma levels of oxidative stress [advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), protein carbonyl, malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitrotyrosine], antioxidant markers [catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD)], and nitrite and nitrate (NOx) were assessed at baseline, immediately following a maximal exercise test (T(ex)), and during recovery (T(1h), T(2h), T(24h)) in trained (T: 8 h/wk minimum) and untrained (U: no regular physical activity) sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers or control (CON) subjects (T-SCT, n = 10; U-SCT, n = 8; T-CON, n = 11; and U-CON, n = 11; age: 23.5 ± 2.2 yr). The trained subjects had higher SOD activities (7.6 ± 5.4 vs. 5.2 ± 2.1 U/ml, P = 0.016) and lower levels of AOPP (142 ± 102 vs. 177 ± 102 μM, P = 0.028) and protein carbonyl (82.1 ± 26.0 vs. 107.3 ± 30.6 nm/ml, P = 0.010) than the untrained subjects in response to exercise. In response to exercise, U-SCT had a higher level of AOPP (224 ± 130 vs. 174 ± 121 μM, P = 0.012), nitrotyrosine (127 ± 29.1 vs.70.6 ± 46.6 nM, P = 0.003), and protein carbonyl (114 ± 34.0 vs. 86.9 ± 26.8 nm/ml, P = 0.006) compared with T-SCT. T-SCT had a higher SOD activity (8.50 ± 7.2 vs. 4.30 ± 2.5 U/ml, P = 0.002) and NOx (28.8 ± 11.4 vs. 14.6 ± 7.0 μmol·l(-1)·min(-1), P = 0.003) in response to exercise than U-SCT. Our data indicate that the overall oxidative stress and nitric oxide response is improved in exercise-trained SCT carriers compared with their untrained counterparts. These results suggest that physical activity could be a viable method of controlling the oxidative stress. This could have a beneficial impact because of its involvement in endothelial dysfunction and subsequent vascular impairment in hemoglobin S carriers.  相似文献

Although it is well known that regular exercise may promote neuroprotection, the mechanisms underlying this effect are still not fully understood. We investigated if swim training promotes neuroprotection by potentiating antioxidant pathways, thereby decreasing the effects of oxidative stress on glutamate and nitric oxide release. Male Wistar rats (n=36) were evenly randomized into a trained group (TRA) (5 days/week, 8 weeks, 30 min) and a sedentary group (SED). Forty‐eight hours after the last session of exercise, animals were killed and brain was collected for in vitro ischemia. Cortical slices were divided into two groups: a group in which oxidative stress was induced by oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD), and a group of non‐deprived controls (nOGD). Interestingly, exercise by itself increased superoxide dismutase activity (nOGD, SED vs. TRA animals) with no effect on pro‐oxidative markers. In fact, TRA‐OGD slices showed lowered levels of lactate dehydrogenase when compared with SED‐OGD controls, reinforcing the idea that exercise affords a neuroprotective effect. We also demonstrated that exercise decreased glutamate and nitrite release as well as lipid membrane damage in the OGD cortical slices. Our data suggest that under conditions of metabolic stress, swim training prevents oxidative damage caused by glutamate and nitric oxide release.  相似文献

Lack of exercise contributes to systemic inflammation and is a major cause of chronic disease. The long-term impact of initiating and sustaining exercise in late life, as opposed to sustaining a sedentary lifestyle, on whole-body health measures such as physical performance is not well known. This is an exploratory study to compare changes in physical performance among older adults initiating exercise late in life versus inactive older adults. Data from two observational cohorts were included in this analysis, representing two activity groups. The Active group cohort comprises older adults (n = 318; age 72.5 ± 7.2 years) enrolled in a supervised exercise program, “Gerofit.” The inactive group comprises older adults (n = 146; age 74.5 ± 5.5 years) from the Italian study “Act on Ageing” (AOA) who self-reported being inactive. Participants in both groups completed physical performance battery at baseline and 1-year including: 6-min walk test, 30-s chair stand, and timed up-and-go. Two-sample t-tests measured differences between Gerofit and AOA at baseline and 1-year across all measures. Significant between-group effects were seen for all performance measures (ps = 0.001). The AOA group declined across all measures from baseline to 1 year (range −18% to −24% change). The Gerofit group experienced significant gains in function for all measures (range +10% to +31% change). Older adults who initiated routine, sustained exercise were protected from age-related declines in physical performance, while those who remained sedentary suffered cumulative deficits across strength, aerobic endurance, and mobility. Interventions to reduce sedentary behaviors and increase physical activity are both important to promote multi-system, whole-body health.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of 25 wk of exercise training on in vivo immune measures that depend on T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 2 (Th2) immune responses in the elderly as a substudy of a randomized controlled trial to investigate health benefits of regular exercise training for the elderly. Sixty-five healthy elderly volunteers were randomly assigned to either an exercise training group (n = 32) or a sedentary control group (n = 33). The area of skin reaction to purified protein derivative (PPD) of tuberculin that depends on Th1 activation and the concentrations of serum IgG subclasses and IgE were evaluated before and after 25-wk intervention. All participants completed 25 wk of training. Thirty-one participants of the exercise group and all control group underwent immunological analyses, but only 30 from the exercise group and 21 from the control group had the PPD skin reaction assessment. Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between time and exercise intervention, which appeared as an enhanced skin reaction to tuberculin PPD (P < 0.05) and a reduced serum IgG4 concentration, the production of which depends on Th2-dependent class switching (P < 0.05), in the exercise group after 25 wk. No immune variables changed in the control group. These result supports the hypothesis that exercise training favors in vivo Th1 immune response in elderly persons.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of different kinds of physical exercise on plasma glutathione levels. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: In walking group (W; n=6), rats were trained to walk 0.8 m/min for 45 min; slow running group (SR; n=6) were trained to run 4 m/min for 45 min; fast running group (FR; n=6) ran 8m/min for 60 min and control rats (C; n=6) remained in their home cages. All animals were sacrificed after exercise and the levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) in plasma samples determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a fluorescent detector. Compared to controls, exercise did not change GSH plasma levels of the W group. A tendency to decrease blood GSH was observed in plasma samples of the SR group and in the FR group, physical exercise resulted in a dramatic decrease in GSH plasma levels. These data suggest that during light physical exercise there is a low production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with a low request for antioxidant defence such as oxidation of GSH. The dramatic decrease observed in GSH levels in FR rats would indicate the presence of oxidative stress able to modify blood antioxidant profiles. Our results suggest that GSH plays a central antioxidant role in blood during intensive physical exercise and that its modifications are closely related to exercise intensity.  相似文献

Physical activity is known to play a cardioprotective role. Nevertheless, a paradox seems to arise when considering that aerobic exercise enhances oxidative stress. In previous works, we showed that free radical formation during physical activity was counteracted by an increase in antioxidant defenses. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation is a crucial step in atherosclerosis, process that can be inhibited by high density lipoprotein (HDL) through its oxidable components or associated enzymes like paraoxonase (PON) and platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH). In this study, we evaluated copper-induced oxidation in isolated LDL and HDL fractions, and the effect of HDL on LDL oxidation in samples from well trained amateur athletes who were participating in an ultra-distance triathlon (n=18) in comparison with healthy sedentary controls (n=18). PON and PAF-AH activities and PON phenotype were also evaluated. The oxidability of isolated lipoproteins, as well as HDL antioxidant capacity, was similar in both groups of subjects. After classification by paraoxonase phenotype, only sportsmen belonging to the QR phenotype showed higher HDL susceptibility to in vitro oxidation (thiobarbituric reactive substances, TBARS) than controls (p<0.05). HDL oxidability exhibited a positive correlation with its triglyceride content (r=0.58; p<0.01). Similarly, HDL capacity to inhibit LDL oxidation was increased in athletes (p<0.05) which was positively associated with HDL oxidability (HDL-TBARS: r=0.55, p<0.005; HDL-lag time: r=0.45, p<0.01; HDL-D max: r=0.35, p<0.05). In conclusion, regular aerobic exercise was associated to a more efficient antioxidant function played by HDL from PON-QR carriers, which could constitute an adaptive response to the increased oxidative stress.  相似文献

AimTo assess the effect of moderate regular aerobic physical activity not associated to body weight changes on insulin resistance and the associated metabolic changes in general population.Sujects and methodsA cross-sectional, observational study in an adult population (n=101 sujects aged 30-70 years) with no personal history of disease and with stable weight in the three months prior to the study. The group with regular exercise performed 30-60 minutes of moderate regular physical exercise 5 days per week (7.5-15 hours MET per week), while a control group performed no regular physical excersice and had a sedentary lifestyle. Subjects were age- and sex-matched. Lipids, lipoproteins, and HOMA index were measured using standard methods.ResultsThe group with regular physical activity consisted of 48 subjects (21 male/27 female), while the group with no regular physical activity included 53 subjects (31 male/22 female). No significant differences were found between the groups in age, sex, BMI, waist circunference, and blood presure. Significant differences were found between the groups in fasting serum triglyceride, HDL-C, and apoB levels. Fasting plasma insulin levels (12.1 ± 4.13 vs 14.9 ± 4.8 mU/L, P= .004) and HOMA index (2.8 ± 1.1 vs 3.5±4.1, P= .001) were significantly lower in the group with regular physical activity as compared to the sedentary group. Prevalence rates of metabolic syndrome were 20.7% and 45.8% (P=.01) in the regular physical activity and sedentary groups respectively.ConclusionModerate regular physical activity is associated to higher insulin sensitivity, an improved lipid profile, and a decrease in components of metabolic syndrome with no change in weight or BMI.  相似文献

To assess the effects of regular physical activity on muscle functional characteristics of carriers of sickle cell trait (SCT), 39 untrained (U) and trained (T) hemoglobin (Hb)AA (CON) and SCT subjects (U-CON, n = 12; U-SCT, n = 8; T-CON, n = 10; and T-SCT, n = 9) performed a graded exercise and a time to exhaustion (T(ex)) test, and were subjected to a muscle biopsy. Maximal power, total work performed during T(ex), citrate synthase and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activities, respiratory chain complexes I and IV content, and capillary density (CD), diameter (COD), and surface area (CSA) were upregulated by the same proportion in T-CON and T-SCT compared with their untrained counterparts. These proportionally similar differences imply that the observed discrepancies between U-SCT and U-CON remained in the trained subjects. Specifically, both CD and COX remained and tended to remain lower, and both COD and CSA remained and tended to remain higher in T-SCT than in T-CON. Besides, carriers of SCT displayed specific adaptations with regular physical activity: creatine kinase activity; complexes II, III, and V content; and type I fiber surface area and capillary tortuosity were lower or unchanged in T-SCT than in U-SCT. In summary, our results show that 1) carriers of SCT adapted almost similarly to CON to regular physical activity for most of the studied muscle characteristics, 2) oxidative potential remains altered in physically active carriers of SCT compared with HbAA counterparts, and 3) the specific remodeling of muscle microvascular network persists in the trained state.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether excess of vitamin B6 leads to ultrastructural changes in cerebral cortex of forty-eight healthy albino rats which were included in the study. Saline solution was injected to to the control groups (CG-10, n = 12 for 10 days; CG-15, n = 12 for 15 days; CG-20, n=12 for 20 days). The three experimental groups (EG-10, n = 12; EG-15, n = 12; EG-20, n = 12) were treated with 5 mg/kg vitamin B6 daily for 10 days (EG-10), 15 days (EG-15) and 20 days (EG-20). Brain tissues were prepared by glutaraldehyde-osmium tetroxide double fixation for ultrastructural analysis. No significant changes were observed in the control groups. The ultrastructural analysis revealed that the numbers of damaged mitochondria, lipofuscin granules and vacuoles were significantly higher in all the experimental groups than in the control groups (p < 0.05). However, synaptic density was significantly decreased in the experimental groups as compared to the control groups (p < 0.05). The results suggest that the excess of vitamin B6 intake causes damage to the cerebral cortex due to cellular intoxication and decreased synaptic density. Thus, careful attention should be paid to the time and dose of vitamin B6 recommended for patients who are supplemented with this vitamin.  相似文献

Recently, physical exercise has been shown to significantly alter neurochemistry and neuronal function and to increase neurogenesis in discrete brain regions. Although we have documented that physical exercise leads to molecular changes in the posterior hypothalamic area (PHA), the impact on neuronal activity is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether neuronal activity in the PHA is altered by physical exercise. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were allowed free access to running wheels for a period of 10 wk (exercised group) or no wheel access at all (nonexercised group). Single-unit extracellular recordings were made in anesthetized in vivo whole animal preparations or in vitro brain slice preparations. The spontaneous firing rates of PHA neurons in exercised SHR in vivo were significantly lower (8.5 +/- 1.6 Hz, n = 31 neurons) compared with that of nonexercised SHR in vivo (13.7 +/- 1.8 Hz, n = 38 neurons; P < 0.05). In addition, PHA neurons that possessed a cardiac-related rhythm in exercised SHR fired significantly lower (6.0 +/- 1.8 Hz, n = 11 neurons) compared with nonexercised SHR (12.1 +/- 2.4 Hz, n = 18 neurons; P < 0.05). Similarly, the spontaneous in vitro firing rates of PHA neurons from exercised SHR were significantly lower (3.5 +/- 0.3 Hz, n = 67 neurons) compared with those of nonexercised SHR (5.6 +/- 0.5 Hz, n = 58 neurons; P < 0.001). Both the in vivo and in vitro findings support the hypothesis that physical exercise can lower spontaneous activity of neurons in a cardiovascular regulatory region of the brain. Thus physical exercise may alter central neural control of cardiovascular function by inducing lasting changes in neuronal activity.  相似文献

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is characterized by left ventricular dysfunction, resulting in hemodynamic changes, sustained inflammatory state, as well as increase in oxidative stress. Physical exercise has been described as an important nonpharmacological procedure in the treatment of CHF, contributing to the improvement of the clinical outcomes in this disease. This study evaluated the effects of physical training on hemodynamics, muscle lipid peroxidation, and plasmatic levels of IL-10 in CHF rats. The left coronary artery was ligated to induce CHF, or sham operation was performed in control groups. Rats were assigned to one of four groups: trained CHF (T-CHF, n = 10), sedentary CHF (S-CHF, n = 10), trained sham (T-Sham, n = 10), or sedentary sham (S-Sham, n = 10). Trained animals had carried out a swimming protocol, 60 min/day, 5 days/wk, during 8 wk, whereas sedentary animals remained without training. Eight weeks of physical training promoted an improvement of diastolic function represented by a reduction of the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure in the T-CHF group compared with the S-CHF group (P < 0.05). Lipid peroxidation evaluated in gastrocnemius muscle using thiobarbituric acid reactive substance assay was higher in the S-CHF group compared with all other groups (P < 0.05). However, there were no differences between T-CHF compared with S-Sham and T-Sham groups. The plasmatic levels of IL-10 were lower in the S-CHF group compared with all other groups (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that regular physical training using a swimming protocol, with duration of 8 wk, improves the cardiac function and the anti-inflammatory response and reduces muscle cellular damage.  相似文献

Although Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders exhibit the highest rates of obesity and associated chronic diseases of any racial/ethnic group, they remain vastly underrepresented in health research. In a cross-sectional survey of college students (N = 402) we examined BMI and health outcomes in an ethno-racially diverse rural sample of Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders (25.1%), Asian Americans (39.8%), and European Americans (35.1%). Measures assessed BMI, health status, health behaviors, frequency of exercise, and symptoms of psychiatric disorders (i.e., depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and substance abuse and dependence). Regression analyses revealed that an overall model of five predictors (gender, race, regular exercise, difficulty sleeping, and anxiety) was significantly associated with obesity (P < 0.001) and correctly classified 84.2% of cases. A 30.7% of Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders were obese as compared with 9.2% of European Americans and 10.6% of Asian Americans. These findings suggest that Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islanders are at high risk for obesity and associated medical comorbidities, but that regular physical activity may ameliorate this risk. Further, these results support the consideration of Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders as a distinct racial/ethnic subgroup separate from other Asian populations.  相似文献

Both regular physical exercise and low levels of H(2)O(2) administration result in increased resistance to oxidative stress. We measured the accumulation of reactive carbonyl derivatives and the activities of proteasome complex and DT-diaphorase in cardiac muscle of trained and untrained rats after chronic i.p. administration of 1 ml t-butyl H(2)O(2) (1 mmol/kg for 3 weeks every second day). Twenty-four rats were randomly assigned to a control group administered with saline, control administered with H(2)O(2), and exercised administered either saline or H(2)O(2). The activity of DT-diaphorase significantly increased in H(2)O(2) administered and exercised groups, indicating that an increase in H(2)O(2) levels stimulate the activity of this enzyme. The cardiac muscle of H(2)O(2) administered nonexercised animals accumulated significantly more carbonyl than control group (P < 0.05). The exercise and H(2)O(2) administration resulted in less oxidatively modified protein than found in nonexercised groups (P < 0.05). The peptide-like activity of proteasome complex was induced by the treatment of H(2)O(2) and exercise and exercise potentiate the effect of H(2)O(2). On the other hand, the chymotrypsin-like and trypsin-like activities were stimulated only by physical training and H(2)O(2) administration. The data suggest that chronic administration of H(2)O(2) after exercise training decreases the accumulation of carbonyl groups below the steady-state level and induces the activity of proteasome and DT-diaphorase. Hence, the stimulating effect of physical exercise on free radical generation is an important phenomenon of the exercise-induced adaptation process since it increases resistance to oxidative stress. Regular exercise training is a valuable physiological means of preconditioning the myocardium to prolonged oxidative stress.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of additional resistance training on cardiorespiratory endurance in young (15.8 ± 0.8 yrs) male basketball players. Experimental group subjects (n=23) trained twice per week for 12 weeks using a variety of general free-weight and machine exercises designed for strength acquisition, beside ongoing regular basketball training program. Control group subject (n=23) participated only in basketball training program. Oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) and related gas exchange measures were determined continuously during maximal exercise test using an automated cardiopulmonary exercise system. Muscle power of the extensors and flexors was measured by a specific computerized tensiometer. Results from the experimental group (VO(2max) 51.6 ± 5.7 ml.min(-1).kg(-1) pre vs. 50.9 ± 5.4 ml.min(-1).kg(-1) post resistance training) showed no change (p>0.05) in cardiorespiratory endurance, while muscle strength and power of main muscle groups increased significantly. These data demonstrate no negative cardiorespiratory performance effects on adding resistance training to ongoing regular training program in young athletes.  相似文献

Studies have reported that exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) induces lung inflammation and increases oxidative stress, and both effects are susceptible to changes via regular aerobic exercise in rehabilitation programs. However, the effects of exercise on lungs exposed to DEP after the cessation of exercise are not clear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of high-intensity swimming on lung inflammation and oxidative stress in mice exposed to DEP concomitantly and after exercise cessation. Male Swiss mice were divided into 4 groups: Control (n = 12), Swimming (30 min/day) (n = 8), DEP (3 mg/mL—10 μL/mouse) (n = 9) and DEP+Swimming (n = 8). The high-intensity swimming was characterized by an increase in blood lactate levels greater than 1 mmoL/L between 10th and 30th minutes of exercise. Twenty-four hours after the final exposure to DEP, the anesthetized mice were euthanized, and we counted the number of total and differential inflammatory cells in the bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF), measured the lung homogenate levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, INF-ϫ, IL-10, and IL-1ra using ELISA, and measured the levels of glutathione, non-protein thiols (GSH-t and NPSH) and the antioxidant enzymes catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the lung. Swimming sessions decreased the number of total cells (p<0.001), neutrophils and lymphocytes (p<0.001; p<0.05) in the BALF, as well as lung levels of IL-1β (p = 0.002), TNF-α (p = 0.003), IL-6 (p = 0.0001) and IFN-ϫ (p = 0.0001). However, the levels of IL-10 (p = 0.01) and IL-1ra (p = 0.0002) increased in the swimming groups compared with the control groups, as did the CAT lung levels (p = 0.0001). Simultaneously, swimming resulted in an increase in the GSH-t and NPSH lung levels in the DEP group (p = 0.0001 and p<0.002). We concluded that in this experimental model, the high-intensity swimming sessions decreased the lung inflammation and oxidative stress status during DEP-induced lung inflammation in mice.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that stress‐related disorders, such as the increase on the caloric intake, are twice as common in women as in men, but surprisingly, very few studies have been tested this subject on female experimental animals. Additionally, it has been proposed that regular physical exercise can improve the deleterious effects of stress. Therefore, the present longitudinal study, performed in female rats, aimed to test the influence of chronic stress (ST) imposed by social isolation on the animals’ caloric intake and to assess the effect of regular physical exercise of low intensity on this behaviour. In 4 groups of Wistars rats (control sedentary, n = 6; control exercised, n = 6; ST sedentary, n = 6; ST exercised, n = 6), body weight, food intake, abdominal fat weight, adrenal weight, corticosterone metabolites in faeces and plasma insulin levels were measured during the experimental protocol and/or at its end. The results showed that social isolation was not able to modify the amount of abdominal fat and the body weight; however, it promoted significant increases in the corticosterone metabolites and in the amount of caloric intake, which were attenuated in exercised rats. Additionally, exercised groups presented lower levels of fasting insulin than sedentary groups. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that regular physical exercise of low intensity attenuates the corticosterone metabolites and overeating behaviour triggered by social stress.
