Two practical regimens designed to induce estrus and ovulation in ewes in late anestrus were compared. Forty ewes were given a soluble glass rumen bolus containing 150 mg melatonin on July 9 and were joined with two vasectomized rams on July 23 and with three fertile rams on August 6. A second group of 40 ewes was treated with an intravaginal progestagen pessary (60mg medroxy-progesterone acetate) on July 23. Following pessary removal after 12 d, ewes were given 750 IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). Five fertile rams were joined with these ewes 48 h after progestagen removal. Melatonin concentrations were determined in single blood samples collected in early afternoon of July 21. Mating dates, lambing dates and litter sizes were recorded. Date of mating was significantly later in ewes treated with melatonin compared with those treated with progestagen plus PMSG (P<0.0001). All ewes given melatonin were mated within 4 wk, and those on progestagen plus PMSG treatment within one day of fertile ram introduction. Thirty-four ewes (85%) allocated to melatonin treatment and 36 (90%) allocated to progestagen plus PMSG treatment lambed (P>0.05). Mean (+/-SEM) lambing date was later in melatonin-treated ewes (January 17+/-1.2 d) compared to those given progestagen plus PMSG (December 30+/-0.6 d; P<0.0001). Mean litter size was lower in melatonin-treated ewes (1.5+/-0.1) compared with those given progestagen plus PMSG (2.0+/-0.1; P<0.001). Plasma melatonin concentrations indicated that 9 of 40 ewes treated with melatonin had circulating melatonin concentrations of less than 16 pg/ml. It is concluded that under conditions that existed in this experiment, treatment with progestagen plus PMSG in late anestrus resulted in more synchronous mating and lambing and a higher litter size than that following administration of a soluble glass rumen-degradable bolus containing melatonin.  相似文献

Accelerated lambing system is heavily reliant on reproductive technologies meant to enable off the season breeding in sheep. Therefore, the present study was programmed to assess the effect of breeding season (BS) on fertility of sheep following estrus synchronization (ES) and fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI). A total of 248 and 365 ewes were synchronized and inseminated during the BS (Febuary–March and July–September) and non-breeding season (NBS) respectively, during 2012–14. Synchronization of estrus was done by AVIKESIL-S, intra-vaginal progesterone sponges kept in situ in vagina for 12 days. 200 IU eCG was administered intramuscularly on 12th day after sponge withdrawal. FTAI was performed twice in ewes exhibiting signs of estrus at 48 and 56h after sponge removal, using liquid chilled semen of Patanwadi/Malpura rams containing 100 million sperm. Breeding season had no significant (p<0.05) effect on estrus synchronization. The estrous responses during the BS and NBS were 84.68% and 83.29% respectively. The lambing percentage during BS was 66.67%, which is significantly (p<0.05) higher than the lambing percentage of NBS (57.57%). Although, the lambing percentage in NBS maneuvered ewes were lower than the BS ewes but still the technology can be used to offset the effect of anestrus and to augment production in sheep.  相似文献

One hundred twenty-one Swedish Landrace Finewool ewes were treated with progestagen sponges (P), teaser ram stimulation (R), or melatonin implants plus teaser ram stimulation (M) in preparation for breeding with whole rams in August. Blood progesterone analyses from ewes in the R and M groups gave no evidence of luteal activity before the introduction of teaser rams. There were no significant differences between treatments for pregnancy rate (~90%). The P group had the most compact lambing season, while median breeding dates for M and R groups were delayed by one cycle. In those groups, the introduction of breeding rams was later found to have been too late. M and R differed significantly for probable conception date but not for lambing dates. Circa 30% of M ewes did not have a short 6 day ovulation cycle after the first ovulation, which resulted in a less concentrated lambing season than the other methods. Although no significant differences in litter size were seen among the 3 treatments, M had the highest group average, 2.25. The ewes in this study were not in very deep anestrous in the middle of August. This supports the conclusion that treatment with exogenous hormones is not necessary to breed Swedish Landrace Finewool ewes successfully in late August/early September.  相似文献

At 40 day intervals, groups of 87 to 142 commercial ewes of mixed breeding were subjected to a 5 day breeding period, following one of three estrus inducing or synchronizing treatments (intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate) for 12 days with (progestin P.M.S.G. group) or without pregnant mares serum gonadotropin (P.M.S.G.) (Progestin group) at sponge removal, or a single injection of prostaglandin F(2alpha) (breeding season and early anestrus only) (PGF(2alpha) group)). Mean pregnancy rates (ewes lambing of those treated) and lambing percentages (lambs born per 100 ewes lambing) were 31 +/- 4%, 169 +/- 6%, 20 +/- 5%, 105 +/- 2% and 18 +/- 8%, 118 +/- 3%, respectively, for the three treatment groups above. Pregnancy rates for the progestin, P.M.S.G. group were 52% in late July, prior to the breeding season, 52% in September and declined to 14% in March (early anestrus). The time from the first of two daily injections of estradiol benzoate to lambing was 34.5 +/- 4.4 hours in ewes 142 to 146 days pregnant.  相似文献

A procedure for assessing sexual activity (libido) and serving capacity (number of ejaculations) in individual rams is described. Libido and serving capacity was measured by this procedure in 10 Lincoln, 10 Suffolk, 2 Columbia, and 2 Polypay rams prior to the breeding season. Semen was evaluated, and the scrotal circumference measured. The rams were single-sire mated to 10-12 whiteface, crossbred ewes during a 35-day breeding season (September 26 - October 29). First-service conception rates, total conception rate, lambing percentage per ewe lambing, and lambing percentage per ewe exposed were calculated for each ram. The mean libido score for the 24 rams was 8.95 and the mean serving capacity score was 3.16. The 24 rams were classified as low serving capacity (<2 ejaculation), medium serving capacity (2-3 ejaculations), or high serving capacity (>3 ejaculations). There were no significant differences in either conception rate or lambing percentages between the 3 groups of rams. The first-service conception rate, total conception rate, lambing percentage per ewe lambing, and lambing percentage per ewe exposed were 74.8, 93.8, 148.6, and 139.4 percent, respectively, for the 24 rams. Libido and serving capacity tests in the rams, as used in this experiment, prior to the breeding season, were not successful in predicting fertility or prolificacy in ewes.  相似文献

Sixty anestrous ewes were used to determine the effects of artificial photoperiod and/or melatonin feeding on seasonality of reproduction. Treatments included natural daylight (ND), 8 h of light, 16 h of darkness (8L: 16D), natural daylight plus 3.5 mg melatonin fed per ewe daily (ND + MEL), and 8L: 16D plus 3.5 mg melatonin fed per ewe daily (8L: 16D + MEL). The percentage of ewes lambing was lower (P < 0.05) for ND treated ewes (40%) than for ewes in 8L: 16D (100%), ND + MEL (91.7%), or 8L: 16D + MEL (93.3%). The earliest mean conception date was for ewes in the 8L: 16D + MEL treatment. This was 10 days earlier than for ewes in the ND treatment (P < 0.05). ND and ND + MEL treated ewes had fewer lambs (P < 0.05) and lighter litter weight (P < 0.05) per ewe lambing than did 8L: 16D and 8L: 16D + MEL treated ewes. Serum progesterone levels above 1.0 ng/ml were reached and maintained approximately 3 wk earlier in the 8L: 16D, 8L: 16D + MEL, and ND + MEL treated ewes than in the ND treated ewes (P < 0.05). Ewes in ND treatment had higher overall serum prolactin levels (P < 0.05) than did ewes in all other treatments. Results indicate that the 8L: 16D treatment and/or feeding melatonin can hasten cyclicity in ewes and increase the number of ewes conceiving.  相似文献

A total of 548 Manchega ewes were used to compare progestagen impregnated intravaginal sponges (12 days) plus eCG with melatonin implant (100 days) treatments, as possible stimulants of reproductive performance during the seasonal anoestrus and the lactation period. The use of both methods of oestrous manipulation induced a significant improvement in conception rate (78% for progestagen and eCG; 78% for melatonin versus 65% for the control) and fecundity (1.50 for progestagen and eCG; 1.55 for melatonin versus 1.26 for the control), when compared to the control group. Likewise, the lambing rate was also increased (1.17 for progestagen and eCG; 1.21 for melatonin versus 0.82 for control). A total of 35 and 39 extra lambs/100 ewes mated were produced, with an increase in productivity (percentage of extra lambs) of 43% and 48%, for ewes treated with progestagen sponges and melatonin, respectively, compared to the control group. The interval between ram introduction and parturition was significantly decreased, with matings in February–April (early seasonal anoestrus), compared to matings in March–May (seasonal anoestrus) in the group treated with progestagen sponges. An increase in the interval between parturition and the following mating was also recorded. As the body condition improved, the number of lambing ewes and fecundity were significantly improved in all groups. All the fertility results obtained with the progestagen sponges and melatonin treatments were similar. It could be concluded that progestagen sponges plus eCG and melatonin implants improved the reproductive performance of ewes, in seasonal anoestrus and during the lactation period, to a similar extent.  相似文献

Eighty-four mature fine-wool ewes were randomly allotted to one of three dietary treatments to examine the influence of dietary sewage solids on reproductive performance. Treatments were a basal diet or basal plus either 3.5% cottonseed meal (CSM) or 7% sewage solids. Serum progesterone and estradiol-17beta measured in blood samples collected through an estrous cycle just before the breeding season of the first and second years were not adversely influenced by sewage feeding. Progesterone concentrations quantified in weekly blood samples collected during gestation and lactation of both years did not differ (P>0.10) among treatments. During the first lambing season, lambing data showed that ewes consuming CSM produced slightly more lambs per ewe exposed (P<0.10) than either basal- or sewage-fed ewes. During the second breeding season, midventral laparotomies revealed that ovaries from ewes receiving CSM contained more (P<0.10) corpora lutea than did those from either basal- or sewage-fed animals. However, at the end of the second lambing season, no differences (P>0.10) among treatments in the number of lambs born or weaned were observed. A third year's lambing data also revealed no difference (P>0.10) among treatments for lambing rates. These data indicate that prolonged consumption of a diet containing 7% sewage solids has little, if any, detrimental effect on reproductive performance of mature fine-wool ewes.  相似文献

Twenty days before a regular fall breeding season, 93 mature Rambouillet ewes were randomly allotted to one of two groups to examine the response of cycling females exposed to sterile rams. Six vasectomized rams were joined with 46 ewes during the 20-day period while 47 ewes remained separate from the rams. All ewes were judged to have been cycling either by paint marks from rams on treated animals or by the cyclic nature of progesterone (sampled at four-day intervals) profiles in control ewes. After removal of sterile males, fertile Debouillet rams remained with the ewes during a 34-day breeding season. Approximately six weeks before beginning the lambing season, one-half the females in each sterile ram treatment group were forced to walk 0.8 km per day to examine the influence of exercise on subsequent reproductive performance. Presence of sterile males did not alter (P>0.10) lambing rate, average lambing date or percentage of ewes lambing during thirds of the lambing season suggesting that prebreeding exposure of cycling ewes to vasectomized rams does not enhance lambing rate or shorten the lambing season. Forced exercise resulted in increased daily feed consumption which was reflected in heavier (P<0.05) lamb birth weights. Percentage of ewes experiencing either dystocia or pregnancy toxemia was similar (P>0.20) in exercised and unexercised animals. Moderate exercise during late gestation may increase lamb birth weight without increasing lambing difficulty.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of treating seasonally anoestrous ewes with melatonin before ram introduction on reproductive response, and on LH secretion in anoestrous ewes induced to ovulate by rams.In Experiment 1, a total of 667 ewes from three flocks involving Merino (Flock 1, N = 149), Merino entrefino (Flock 2, N = 325) and Rasa Aragonesa (Flock 3, N = 203) breeds were used. Within each flock, ewes isolated from rams since the previous lambing were assigned at random to receive melatonin implants of Regulin (75, 175 and 105 in Merino, Merino entrefino and Rasa Aragonesa flocks, respectively) or to serve as untreated controls (74 in Merino, 150 in Merino entrefino and 98 in Rasa Aragonesa flocks). Fertile rams were introduced into all flocks 5 weeks after implantation in March (Flocks 1 and 2) or April (Flock 3), and remained with the ewes for a 50 day mating period. Percentage of ewes with luteal activity at ram introduction did not differ between melatonin treated and control ewes in any flock. There were no significant differences in either the mean interval from ram introduction to lambing or the distribution of lambing. Implantation with melatonin resulted in an improvement of prolificacy in all three flocks, although this only reached statistical significance in the Merino flock (1.15 vs. 1.03 in treated and control ewes, respectively, P < 0.05). Fertility was increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the Merino entrefino flock (64.5% in treated vs. 51.3% in control ewes). In Experiment 2, two trials were undertaken utilizing a total of 63 ewes. Trial 1 involved 24 mature Manchega ewes and Trial 2 involved 39 Merino ewe lambs. Half of the animals in each trial received a Regulin implant on 28 February (Trial 1) or 12 March (Trial 2) and the remaining half acted as controls. Rams were introduced 5 weeks after implantation and remained with the ewes for a 25 day period. In both trials, anoestrous ewes at ram introduction were bled at 20 min intervals for 3 h before and 5 h after ram introduction and then at 3 h intervals over the next 24 h for assessment of plasma concentrations of LH. Secretion of LH before or following introduction of rams was not affected by melatonin. Both treated and control anoestrous ewes in each trial responded to introduction of rams with an increase in the frequency of the LH pulses (P < 0.05), but no significant changes were detected in pulse amplitude or mean levels of LH. A preovulatory surge of LH was detected between 8 and 26 h after ram introduction, but neither mean interval from ram introduction to the peak of LH surge, nor the magnitude of the LH peak, was influenced by melatonin treatment. Results from this study show that: (1) melatonin implants administered during early seasonal anoestrus have the potential to improve reproductive performance in Spanish breeds of sheep, but the response is conditioned by breed, management system and environmental factors; (2) melatonin did not modify the secretion of LH in anoestrous ewes induced to ovulate by the ram effect under our experimental conditions.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine if ewes subjected to frontal hypothalamic deafferentation (FHD) during anestrus remained anestrus or began to have estrous cycles, and if melatonin secretion was disrupted by FHD. Ovary-intact ewes in Group 1 were subjected to either FHD (n = 10) or sham FHD (n = 5) in early July 1983. Estrous cycles were monitored by measuring circulating progesterone concentrations from before FHD until September 1985. Group 2 ewes (n = 4) were subjected to FHD in October 1984. In late April 1985, blood samples were taken from all ewes at 1- to 4-h intervals from 1100 h to 0700 h of the following day to monitor diurnal changes of melatonin. Hypothalami were collected for histological evaluation of lesions. All Group 1 ewes (sham FHD and FHD) initiated normal estrous cycles in August and September 1983, and all ceased cycles by mid-February 1984. All sham FHD and 4 FHD ewes remained anestrus until August or September of 1984 and then resumed normal cycles. In contrast, 5 FHD ewes resumed cycles as early as April 1984 and then cycled intermittently or almost continuously. Two Group 2 ewes cycled continuously after FHD and 2 cycled infrequently. FHD ewes that showed prolonged breeding seasons had cuts that damaged the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and adjacent structures. Mean nocturnal (2000 h-0500 h) melatonin concentrations did not differ (p greater than 0.05) between sham FHD, FHD "normal season," and FHD "continuous cycle" ewes. In summary, damage to the SCN region by FHD during anestrus had no detectable effect on either onset or cessation of the next breeding season but greatly prolonged subsequent breeding seasons. Thus, the environmental signals that both initiated and terminated the 1983 breeding season apparently had been given before FHD was performed in midsummer. Damage to the SCN region during the breeding season caused some ewes to cycle continuously. The effects of FHD apparently were not due to disruption of melatonin secretion. FHD ewes that showed prolonged breeding seasons had normal seasonal changes of plasma prolactin concentrations. This suggests that different neural structures control seasonal patterns of gonadotropin and prolactin secretion.  相似文献

Administration of melatonin to advance the breeding season in sheep has been widely used, since this hormone conveys the photoperiodic signal to the reproductive neuroendocrine axis. An increased lambing percentage has been reported following such treatment during anoestrus, which could be mediated through a higher rate of embryonic survival, either by an improvement in luteal function or by a reduction in the antiluteolytic mechanisms. The aim of this article is to review the body of knowledge on the effect of melatonin on the ovine ovary, the embryo and the establishment of pregnancy. Some studies using synchronized ewes have found that melatonin treatments during anoestrus do not improve ovulation rate by modifying the timing of follicle emergence, but increasing the number of ovulatory follicles by decreasing the atresia of medium and large follicles. On the other hand, the addition of melatonin to the in vitro maturation medium does not improve oocyte maturation rate in oocytes from sheep ovaries recovered either in anoestrus or in the breeding season. However, a luteotrophic effect of melatonin at either short or medium term has been reported. We have recently observed that melatonin implants tend to improve the survival of embryos collected from ewes after superovulation in anoestrus. More specifically, melatonin induced a significant reduction of the number and rate of non-viable (degenerate and retarded) embryos. Preliminary data from our laboratory suggest that the uterine sensitivity to progesterone - in terms of progesterone receptor expression - of superovulated ewes could be reduced by melatonin treatment. It can be concluded that the success of exogenous melatonin as a means to improve lamb production of sheep is due, at least in part, to an improvement of luteal support and embryonic survival.  相似文献

Anoestrous Suffolk-Cross ewes can be induced into early seasonal ovarian activity by administration of melatonin at the appropriate time of day or by melatonin implants. This treatment is successful if commenced in June, but not earlier in April or May and suggests that a critical period of long days may be necessary before artificial short-day melatonin profiles act as winter time-cues. We have investigated whether the lack of sensitivity to melatonin in April could be overcome in ewes in which breeding activity had been artificially moved forward the previous season. The results indicate that this was indeed the case and that the breeding season in untreated ewes which also previously experienced an early induced breeding season reverted to the normal timing for the Suffolk-Cross breed.  相似文献

Effects of early weaning, lactation, and day-of-year lambing on the ability of Polypay ewes to rebreed following winter and summer lambings were evaluated. Winter lambing ewes did not successfully rebreed while lactating. However, when winter-born lambs were weaned at 31 days postpartum, more ewes rebred and produced summer lambs (35.7%) than when lambs were weaned at 41 days postpartum (23.6%). Ewes that lambed during the early part of the winter lambing period had an advantage over later lambing ewes in the percentage which subsequently lambed the following summer. This was apparently the result of a difference in length of breeding exposure rather than a higher fertility rate during the early part of the breeding period. When summer lambing ewes were rebred during the early part of the summer breeding period (late summer to early fall), stress associated with lactation did not affect subsequent winter lambing performance. Summer lambing ewes belonging to a late weaning (80 days) treatment group did not differ (P>0.05) from those belonging to an early weaning (31 days) treatment group in winter fertility, prolificacy, day-of-year lambing or lambing interval.  相似文献

Forty-nine Spanish Salz ewes lambing in the second fortnight of March (20 March +/- 1.5 d) were used to determine the effects of exogenous melatonin and postweaning nutrition on endocrine status, date of first estrus and ovulation rate. Experimental design was a factorial defined by 2 postweaning planes of nutrition, 1.80 (high) and 1.35 (low) times the maintenance requirements, and treatment with a single 18-mg subcutaneous implant of melatonin (M) 32 d after lambing or no treatment control (C). Mean weaning to first estrus interval was shorter in treated than in control ewes (50.8 +/- 4.2 vs 87.6 +/- 6.3 d; P < 0.01). Considering both the treated and control animals together, the ratio between mean night and daytime plasma melatonin levels was significantly correlated with the implant insertion-first estrus interval on Day 5 (0.67; P < 0.01) and Day 35 (0.63; P < 0.05) after implantation. Melatonin implants induced a significant increase of mean LH concentrations at Days 14 and 33 after implantation (P < 0.01) without any significant influence of plane of nutrition. Ovulation rate was higher for treated than control ewes in the second estrus (P < 0.05). An interaction between plane of nutrition and exogenous melatonin on ovulation rate at the second cycle after weaning was detected (P < 0.01), being close to the significance in the first, fourth and fifth cycles (P < 0.1). These results suggest that exogenous melatonin in April may be an effective way of advancing the breeding season and enhancing ovulation rate associated with a low rather than a high plane of nutrition.  相似文献

Zona pellucida-intact ova collected from ewes seronegative to Brucella ovis were exposed in vitro to B ovis and washed 10 times in medium that contained no antibiotics. After exposure and washing, nontransferable ova were cultured for isolation of Brucella , and the viable ova were transferred into seven B ovis seronegative ewes. No pregnancies resulted, thus recipient ewes were bred during the next breeding season, and blood samples were collected for bacteriological and serological examination until one month after lambing. Brucella ovis was isolated from all of the nontransferable ova, indicating that the transferred ova had viable organisms adhered to them. Although no recipient was found to be pregnant at Day 45, all seven ewes responded to the transferred ova by producing anti-Brucella antibodies. With the exception of a ewe that was euthanized early in the project due to a traumatic injury, all recipients lambed normally during the following breeding season. Brucella was not found in any sample collected from ewes or lambs. However, ELISA titers for B ovis remained in the suspicious range and a ewe was positive on the CF test within 2 wk of lambing.  相似文献

Influence of melatonin on reproductive performance was evaluated by randomly allotting Polypay-type ewes to four treatments: controls in drylot, melatonin-treated ewes in drylot, controls on range, and melatonin-treated ewes on range. An additional group of Targhees and Rambouillets was randomized by breed as control ewes or melatonin-treated ewes to test effect of melatonin in range ewes. All ewes were supplemented with 0.34 kg/head alfalfa-barley (1:1) pellets from 1600 to 1630 h daily, from April 15 to June 30. Ewes maintained on range received no further supplementation, while ewes in drylot received alfalfa pellets for maintenance. Melatonin was fed at 10 mg hd(-1) d(-1) in the pellet to designated ewes in drylot or on range. Three rams were put with each group of ewes on June 1 and rotated among groups at 7-d intervals during the first 30 d of breeding to reduce sire differences. After the first 30 d, ewe groups were combined with all rams. Melatonin induced (P < 0.01) an earlier onset of estrus (approximately 17 d) as indicated by earlier lambing dates in Polypay-type, Rambouillet, and Targhee ewes managed on spring range. Melatonin also increased (P < 0.01) the number of ewes that conceived during the first 30 d of breeding (June) for both management treatments (drylot and range) and for all breeds.  相似文献

Finn x Dorset ewe lambs (n = 70) born in the spring (March 28 to April 6) from two successive lambing seasons were evaluated for age at first ovulation in the absence of mature rams. Ewe lambs were born in a controlled, short light (8L:16D) photoperiod or in ambient light (13L:11D). At about 10 to 11 wk of age, ewe lambs were allocated to a short (8L:16D) or long (16L:8D) light environment. Plasma progesterone (P(4)) concentrations were measured as an index of first ovulation. First exposure of ewes to sexually mature rams was in November. Most ewe lambs (77%) ovulated before ram exposure. More lambs (P < 0.025) born in ambient light and raised in short light reached puberty with typical cycles of plasma progesterone compared to other treatments. Long days tended to retard the onset of puberty. Although pregnancy rate did not differ across light treatments, more ewes became pregnant from the ambient-light born and short-light raised treatment. Photoperiod is an important factor affecting the onset of sexual maturation and genesis of normal luteal progesterone secretion in the ewe lamb.  相似文献

The effects of melatonin implants on out-of-season breeding in New Zealand Romney composite ewes, was determined by comparison of reproductive performance in ewes treated with progesterone+equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) (control; n=107), melatonin+progesterone+eCG (n=97) or melatonin+progesterone (n=96). Conception rates in melatonin+progesterone+eCG-treated ewes (67%) were higher than in the control ewes (P<0.01; 47%). Pregnancy rates were higher in melatonin+progesterone+eCG-treated ewes (55%; P<0.001) compared with the control ewes (40%). Fewer melatonin+progesterone-treated ewes displayed oestrus (14%; P<0.001) and subsequently became pregnant (6%). Oestrus rates in melatonin+progesterone-treated ewes (14%) were lower than both the melatonin+progesterone+eCG-treated (82%) and control ewes (86%; P<0.001), which were similar to each other. The number of foetuses per pregnant ewe was similar in all three treatment groups. Serum melatonin concentrations at Day -9 were higher in the ewes treated with melatonin and there was a large variation between individual ewes, but concentrations were similar for pregnant and nonpregnant ewes. The combination of higher conception rate and the trend for more lambs per pregnant ewes resulted in more lambs being born per ewe treated in melatonin+progesterone+eCG-treated ewes compared to the other two treatment groups. These results suggest that melatonin implants, in conjunction with administration of progesterone and eCG, may be suitable as a means of increasing the number of lambs born per ewe treated in an out-of-season breeding program in New Zealand sheep flocks while melatonin and progesterone is not.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine 1) if pregnancy initiated on Day 32 post partum would be maintained until lambing, 2) if there is a difference in the ability of the previously gravid or nongravid uterine horn to maintain pregnancy, and 3) if season has an effect on embryo loss. Estrus was induced in ewes on Day 32 post partum. At estrus, ewes were inseminated surgically at the uterotubal junction and assigned to the following groups: 1) inseminated at estrus and laparotomized on Day 3 to collect embryos for determination of fertilization rate (C), 2) inseminated in the previously gravid uterine horn (PG), 3) inseminated in the previously nongravid uterine horn (NG), and 4) inseminated when both horns were previously gravid (BG). Ewes pregnant in the PG, NG and BG groups were allowed to lamb. Conception rate in Group C at embryo collection was 70%. Embryo loss, based on concentrations of progesterone at Day 18 post insemination, was 43, 19 and 18% in the BG, NG and PG group, respectively. The high embryo loss in Group BG occurred only during the breeding season. Only 24% of the ewes that had been inseminated lambed. This was due to the prepartum loss of embryos and fetuses (47, 48 and 33% in Group BG, NG and PG, respectively. In conclusion, the detrimental effects of the uterus on embryo survival was evident within 18 d post insemination in Group BG (breeding season), and embryo loss prior to lambing was high in all the treatment groups (both seasons).  相似文献
