In recent years, due to the rise in food consumption, much of the attention has been focused to increase the yield of the agricultural crops which resulted in compromised nutritional quality. Efforts have to be undertaken to enhance the nutritional attributes of legumes, cereals and staple food crops by increasing amino acids and mineral content. In the present study, we evaluated a protoplast fusant (H. lixii MTCC 5659) for its ability to enhance nutritional value and defence activity in chickpea. Essential amino acids; methionine (9.82 mg kg?1 dw), cysteine (2.61 mg kg?1 dw), glycine (11.34 mg kg?1 dw), valine (9.26 mg kg?1 dw), and non-essential amino acids; aspartic acid (39.19 mg kg?1 dw) and serine (17.53 mg kg?1 dw) were significantly higher in seeds of fusant inoculated chickpea. Fusant significantly improved accumulation of mineral nutrients i.e. Cu (157.73 mg kg?1 dw), Co (0.06 mg kg?1 dw), Ni (1.85 mg kg?1 dw), Zn (157.73 mg kg?1 dw) and S (16.29 mg kg?1 dw) in seeds. Biocontrol and defence activities of chickpea increased from 20 to 35% in fusant inoculated plants suggesting its potential to ameliorate biotic stress. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an increase in amino acids and mineral content of chickpea by fusant inoculation.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Metal (e.g. Cd and Pb) pollution in agricultural soils and crops have aroused considerable attention in recent years. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ROL and Fe plaque on Cd and Pb accumulation and distribution in the rice plant.

Methods

A rhizobag experiment was employed to investigate the correlations among radial oxygen loss (ROL), Fe plaque formation and uptake and distribution of Cd and Pb in 25 rice cultivars.

Results

Large differences between the cultivars were found in rates of ROL (1.55 to 6.88 mmol O2 kg?1 root d.w. h?1), Fe plaque formation (Fe: 6,117–48,167 mg kg?1; Mn: 127–1,089 mg kg?1), heavy metals in shoot (Cd: 0.13–0.35 mg kg?1; Pb: 4.8–8.1 mg kg?1) and root tissues (Cd: 1.1–3.5 mg kg?1; Pb: 45–199 mg kg?1), and in Fe plaque (Cd: 0.54–2.6 mg kg?1; Pb: 102–708 mg kg?1). Rates of ROL were positively correlated with Fe plaque formation and metal deposition on root surfaces, but negatively correlated with metal transfer factors of root/plaque and distributions in shoot and root tissues.

Conclusions

ROL-induced Fe plaque promotes metal deposition on to root surfaces, leading to a limitation of Cd and Pb transfer and distribution in rice plant tissues.  相似文献

Oxidative stress or formation of faulty proteins due to non-specific replacement of sulphur by selenium(Se)/mineral imbalance can be one of the reasons for Se phytotoxicity. Present investigation reports the effect of Se on photosynthetic efficiency, anti-oxidative status and micronutrients in maize. Selenate-Se application (1–32 mg kg?1 soil) showed significant growth reduction after 30 days of sowing and all the plants died with concentration higher than 4 mg kg?1 soil. Lower Se doses increased dry matter, chlorophyll, proline and activities of defence enzymes viz. peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase and decreased malondialdehyde, glutathione and glutathione reductase activity as compared to control. All the parameters showed the reverse trend with Se treatment of 4 mg kg?1 soil. Concentration of nutrients (K, P, S, Mn, Mg and Ca) in leaves decreased with application of increasing Se doses. Shoot and root weight decreased (8.5–31.9% and 12–24%, respectively) in response to varying Se doses and highest Se accumulation in these tissues was observed with Se @ 4 mg kg?1 soil. The phyto-toxic effects of higher Se doses may be due to its prooxidant effects and disturbances in nutrients level.  相似文献

Effects of Se on the uptake of essential elements in Pteris vittata L.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Selenium has been proven to be an antioxidant in plants at low dosages. To understand better the mechanisms of Se toxicity and benefit to plants, more investigations about effects of Se on the uptake of essential elements in plants would be desirable. In this study, hydroponic (nutrient solution culture) and pot (soil culture) experiments were simultaneously conducted to investigate the effects of Se on the uptake and distribution of essential elements in Pteris vittata. L (Chinese brake fern), an arsenic (As)-hyperaccumulator and a selenium (Se)-accumulator. Chinese brake fern took up much more Se in nutrient solution culture than in soil culture, with the highest Se content recorded as 1,573 mg kg?1 in the roots, demonstrating remarkable tolerance to Se. In soil culture, Chinese brake fern also accumulated high content of Se, with the highest content measured as 81 mg kg?1 and 233 mg kg?1, in the fronds and roots, respectively. In soil culture, the addition of Se suppressed the uptake of most measured elements, including magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). In nutrient solution culture, when the Se content in the tissues of Chinese brake fern was relatively low, the supplementation of Se suppressed the uptake of most essential elements; however, with the increase of Se content, stimulation effects of Se on the uptake of Ca, Mg, K were observed. An initial decrease followed by a rapid increase of Fe content in the fronds of Chinese brake fern was found with Se addition and tissue Se content increasing in nutrient solution culture, suggesting antagonistic and synergic roles of Se on these elements under low and high Se exposure, respectively. We suggest that Ca, Mg, K may be involved in the tolerance mechanism of Se, and that the regulation of Fe accumulation by Se in the fronds might be partially due to the dual effects of Se on Chinese brake fern.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to investigate the potential risk of toxic elements in paddy soils and rice straws, bran, and husked grains in Kuchesfahan, Gilan, Iran. The average content of total and DTPA-extractable of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 7.0, 26.3, 20728.8, 1516.7, 43.8, 16.6, and 211.8?mg kg?1, and 0.32, 14.1, 97.3, 63.4, 1.7, 4.8, and 56.2?mg kg?1, respectively. In addition, the average content of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in rice grain was 0.16, 2.4, 135.5, 34.1, 2.0, 0.6, and 15.0?mg kg?1, respectively. The average transfer factor for Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn from soil to straw was 0.38, 0.16, 0.004, 0.13, 0.3, 0.04, and 0.09, respectively. The average values of estimated daily intake for Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn through rice consumption for adult are respectively, estimated to be 0.0004, 0.005, 0.32, 0.08, 0.005, 0.0015, and 0.035?mg kg?1 body weight per day. There was no health risk index (HRI) values for adult greater than 1 (except three samples for Fe, and one sample for Mn and Cd); indicated that intake of single metal through the consumption of rice was safe. The average of heath index (HI) value for rice consumption was 0.33 and 0.35 for adult and children, respectively. Therefore, combination of several potentially toxic elements may not cause risk to local residents. Spatial distributions of HRI were obtained for potentially toxic metals in husked grains.  相似文献

Inadequate iron supply has significant consequences to health. There are some relations between the metabolism of different trace elements, such as iron, zinc, copper and chromium. However, the direction of these interactions can be antagonistic or synergistic, and it depends on many factors. The aim of the study was to evaluate the combined effects of supplementary of chromium(III) propionate complex (Cr3) with iron excess on the Cr and Fe status in healthy female rats. The 36 healthy female Wistar rats were divided into six experimental groups (six animals in each) with different Fe levels—adequate (45 mg kg?1—100% RDA) and high (excessive—180 mg kg?1—400% RDA). At the same time, they were supplemented with Cr(III) at doses of 1, 50 and 500 mg kg?1 of diet: C1—control (Fe 45 mg kg?1, Cr 1 mg kg?1); C50 (Fe 45 mg kg?1, Cr 50 mg kg?1); C500 (Fe 45 mg kg?1, Cr 500 mg kg?1); H1 (Fe 180 mg kg?1, Cr 1 mg kg?1); H50 (Fe 180 mg kg?1, Cr 50 mg kg?1); H500 (Fe 180 mg kg?1, Cr 500 mg kg?1). The serum iron level and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) were measured with colorimetric methods. The serum ferritin level was measured by means of electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The serum transferrin level was measured with the ELISA method. Haematological measurements were made with an automated blood analyser. The Cr and Fe tissular levels were measured with the AAS method. The exposure to a high level of Fe(III) alone or in combination with Cr caused Fe accumulation in tissues, especially in the liver and kidneys, but there were no significant changes in the TIBC, transferrin, ferritin concentration in the serum and most haematological parameters. Moreover, the serum, hepatic and renal Cr concentrations decreased. The doses of supplementary Cr(III) given separately or in combination with high level of Fe(III) disturbed the Cr content in the liver and kidneys of healthy female rats. However, they did not change most of the parameters of Fe metabolism, except the Fe kidney concentration. Supplementary Cr3 decreased the renal Fe level in groups with adequate Fe content in the diet. However, the renal Fe levels increased along with a higher Cr level in the diet in groups with high Fe content. The findings proved a relationship between Fe(III) and Cr(III) metabolism in healthy female rats. However, the direction of change varied and depended on relative amounts of these elements in the diet.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the mitigation of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) in a multi-metal contaminated soil and their accumulation in rice plants (Oryza sativa L., cv II You 93) using a combined amendment (CMF, calcium carbonate + metakaolin + fused calcium–magnesium phosphate fertilizer). The results showed that application of CMF was effective in reducing the acid-extractable concentrations of soil Pb and Cd. The exchangeable concentrations of soil As showed an initial decrease followed by a gradual increase. The application of 0.2% CMF notably reduced the concentrations of Pb, Cd, and As in brown rice by 46.5%, 43.6%, and 32.0%, respectively. The concentration of As in brown rice was 0.179 mg kg?1 at 0.2% CMF, which met the maximum levels of contaminants in foods of China (MLs) (the ML of Pb, Cd, and As is 0.2 mg kg?1 according to the China national standard GB 2762-2012). At 1.6% CMF, the concentrations of Pb and Cd in brown rice were 0.002 and 0.185 mg kg?1, respectively, i.e., reductions of 99.6% and 74.1%, and these values also fell within the MLs.  相似文献

Shallow tube well (STW) water, often contaminated with arsenic (As), is used extensively in Bangladesh for irrigating rice fields in the dry season, leading to potential As accumulation in soils. In the current study the consequences of arsenic from irrigation water and direct surface (0–15 cm) soil application were studied under field conditions with wetland rice culture over 2 years. Twenty PVC cylinders (30-cm length and 30-cm diameter) were installed in field plots to evaluate the mobility and vertical distribution of soil As, As mass balance, and the resulting influences on rice yield and plant-As concentration in Boro (dry season) and transplanted (T.) Aman (wet season) rice over the 2-year growth cycle. Treatments included irrigation-water As concentrations of 0, 1 and 2 mg L?1 (Boro season only) and soil-As concentrations of 10 and 20 mg kg?1. Following the 2-year cropping sequence the major portion (39.3–47.6%) of the applied arsenic was retained within the rooting zone at 0–15 cm depth, with 14.7–19.5% of the total applied As at the 5–10 cm and 10–15 cm soil depths compared to 1.3–3.6% at the 35–40 cm soil depth. These results indicate the relatively low mobility of applied As and the likely continued detrimental accumulation of As within the rooting zone. Arsenic addition in either irrigation water or as soil-applied As resulted in yield reductions from 21 to 74 % in Boro rice and 8 to 80 % in T. Aman rice, the latter indicating the strong residual effect of As on subsequent crops. The As concentrations in rice grain (0.22 to 0.81 µg g?1), straw (2.64 to 12.52 µg g?1) and husk (1.20 to 2.48 µg g?1) increased with increasing addition of As. These results indicate the detrimental impacts of continued long-term irrigation with As-contaminated water on agricultural sustainability, food security and food quality in Bangladesh. A critical need exists for the development of crop and water management strategies to minimize potential As hazard in wetland rice production.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The accumulation of cadmium and lead in rice (Oryza sativa L.) grains is a potential threat to human health. In this study, the effect of selenium fertilization on the uptake and translocation of cadmium and lead in rice plants was investigated.

Methods

Rice plants were cultivated using cadmium and lead contaminated soils with selenium addition at three concentrations (0, 0.5 and 1 mg kg?1). At maturity, plants were harvested, and element concentrations in rice tissues were analyzed by using ICP-MS.

Results

Selenium application significantly increased selenium accumulation in rice grain, and markedly decreased cadmium and lead concentrations in rice tissues. In brown rice grains, selenium application reduced cadmium concentrations by 44.4 %, but had no significant effect on lead accumulation. Selenium application significantly decreased metal mobility in soils, at 0.5 mg kg?1 treatment, the translocation factor of cadmium and lead from soil to iron plaque decreased by 71 and 33 % respectively.

Conclusions

The mechanism of selenium mitigating of heavy metal accumulation in rice could be decreasing metal bioavailability in soil. Selenium fertilization could be an effective and feasible method to enrich selenium and reduce cadmium levels in brown rice.  相似文献

Concentrations of aluminum (Al) were determined in leaves of native terrestrial plants, macrophytes and fruit parts (watermelon and tomato) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Al concentrations in water and soil were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Potamogeton thunbergii (macrophyte) and Cynodon aethiopicus (terrestrial grass) had the highest leaf Al concentrations (2 and 1 g kg?1 dw, respectively). Transfer factors (mg kg?1 dw plants/mg kg?1 dw soil) based on total Al concentrations in soil varied from 2 × 10?3 to 0.05 and from 1.9 to 78 based on mobile Al concentrations determined after sequential extraction. Bioconcentration factors (mg kg?1 dw plants/mg L?1 water) varied from 19 to 9.5 × 103 L kg?1 dw. Plants can accumulate high concentrations of Al when growing in neutral pH soils and slightly alkaline lakes in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Controlled experiments showed that C. aethiopicus can accumulate high levels of Al both in root and shoot. Compared to Arabidopsis thaliana, C. aethiopicus was more tolerant to Al exposure as ≥400 μM AlCl3 was needed to inhibit root growth compared to 200 μM in A. thaliana. After exposing C. aethiopicus and A. thaliana in 800 μM AlCl3, alkaline comet assay indicates significant DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) damage in A. thaliana while C. aethiopicus was unaffected. No significant induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in terms of leaf H2O2 levels, could be observed in C. aethiopicus. C. aethiopicus has mechanisms to suppress both Al-induced ROS and DNA damage, thereby increasing tolerance of the species to high Al concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract

The Allchar district is an abandoned antimony–arsenic–thallium deposit located in the north-western region of Ko?uf mountain in the Republic of Macedonia. The locality of Allchar has a complex and unique mineral composition. The current study sought to investigate the levels of uptake and distribution of different heavy metals, such as As, Sb and Tl, in the different organs of Thymus alsarensis Ronniger, an endemic plant species of the area. Root, stem, leaf and flower samples, as well as corresponding soils, were processed, digested and then analysed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Significant accumulation of As, Sb and Tl in this endemic species was observed. Total As content in the soil ranged from 34.7 to 5288 mg kg–1, and the content of As in plants ranged from 0.25 to 140 mg kg–1. The content of Sb in soil and plants ranged from 6.3 to 130 mg kg–1 and 0.25 to 1.51 mg kg–1, respectively. Lastly, the content of Tl in soil and plants ranged from 2.0 to 330 mg kg–1 and 0.10 to 496 mg kg–1, respectively. Similar results were obtained from extraction tests of soil samples using various solvents.  相似文献

A study quantifying the effects of different copper (Cu) concentrations (50, 200, 800 and 1,000 mg kg?1 Cu) on Cu bioaccumulation and physiological responses of Spartina alterniflora was conducted. Plant biomass and Cu accumulation were determined. Plant height, tiller number, chlorophyll, leaf electrolyte leakage rate (ELR), malondialdehyde (MDA), proline, soluble sugar, and organic acids were also measured. The results showed that S. alterniflora mainly accumulated Cu in fine roots. No significant changes of biomass of fine roots were detected except for obvious reduction under 1,000 mg kg?1 Cu. In leaves, rhizomes and fine roots, the highest Cu accumulations were detected under 800 mg kg?1 Cu. The highest Cu accumulation in stem was revealed under 200 mg kg?1 Cu. Plant height decreased under 1,000 mg kg?1 Cu; chlorophyll content reduced under >50 mg kg?1 Cu; levels of ELR and MDA increased under >200 mg kg?1 Cu. However, osmotic components such as proline and soluble sugar were accumulated to cope with higher Cu stresses (800 and 1,000 mg kg?1). Further, oxalic and citric acids were positively related with Cu contents in leaves and stems, suggesting that oxalic and citric acids may be related to Cu detoxification in aboveground parts of S. alterniflora. However, in above and belowground parts, no detoxification function of ascorbic and fumaric acids was observed due to unchanged or decreased trend under Cu stress.  相似文献

This study assessed the interactive effect of selenium (Se) and farmyard manure (FYM) on soil microbial activities, growth, yield, and Se accumulation by wheat grains. Preliminarily, the effect of Se (0–250 µg kg?1 soil) and FYM (0–12.5 g kg?1 soil) was assessed on soil microflora. Selenium exhibited an adverse impact on soil microflora; respiration was decreased at?≥?10 µg kg?1 soil while dehydrogenase and urease activities were decreased at?≥?125 µg kg?1 soil. At 250 µg Se kg?1 soil, respiration, dehydrogenase and urease activities were decreased by 81, 40 and 35%, respectively, on unamended soil, and by 9, 47 and 22%, respectively, on FYM-amended soil. The subsequent plant experiments were conducted with same Se and FYM rates; one was harvested 42 days after sowing and other at crop maturity. The application of 125 µg Se kg?1 and 12.5 g FYM kg?1 soil improved seedling biomass by 12.6 and 22%, respectively, while their combined use lacked synergistic effect. Similarly, at maturity Se and FYM increased grain yield while their combined effect was not synergistic. The Se-induced suppression in microbial activities was not related to yield which was improved (11% at the highest rate in unamended soil) by Se application. Selenium application increased grain Se content in a rate-dependent manner, it increased from 0 to 1025 µg kg?1 by applying 250 µg Se kg?1 soil. Moreover, FYM application decreased Se accumulation in grains. It is concluded that FYM application increased soil microbial activities and yield but reduced grain Se accumulation in wheat on Se-applied soil.

Reaction of 10 maize inbred lines against Fusarium verticillioides and fumonisin accumulation were evaluated under field conditions with three replications in Pars Abad-e-Moghan, Iran. For artificial inoculation, the inbred lines were inoculated with spore suspension in concentration of 1 × 106 ml?1 7–10 days after emergence of silk, using nail punch method. To evaluate the development of the disease, its severity percent and grain yield (g plant?1) was determined two months after inoculation. Total fumonisin produced on maize grains were also evaluated by ELISA kits. The results showed inbred lines K19, K19/1 and K74/1 were susceptible and the rest of the inbred lines were moderately resistant to the diseases. Among moderately resistant inbred lines, A679 and K18 had lowest fumonisin accumulation. Average of the fumonisin accumulation under natural infection condition (control) was 3.37 mg kg?1 while it was 29 mg kg?1 under artificial infection condition, which was 760% more than control.  相似文献

The impact of oxygen (O2) input at the soil surface and in the rhizosphere of rice (Oryza sativa L.) on the spatial and temporal dynamics of arsenic (As) was investigated in a flooded paddy soil. A soil microcosm and root-mat technique were designed to mimic submerged conditions of paddy fields. Water-filled containers with (planted) or without (unplanted) 27-day-old rice seedlings were fitted for 20 days on top of microcosms containing an As-affected soil (Bangladesh). After the initial establishment of strongly reduced conditions (?230 mV) in both planted and unplanted soils, the redox potential gradually increased until the day 8 to reach?+?50 mV at 2 mm from the surface of unplanted soils only. This oxidation was associated with an accumulation of NH4-oxalate extractable As (25.7 mg kg?1) in the 0.5-mm top layer, i.e. at levels above the initial total content of As in the soil (14 mg kg?1) and a subsequent depletion of As in soil solution at 2 mm from soil surface. Root O2-leakage induced the formation of an iron (Fe) plaque in root apoplast, with no evidence of outer rhizosphere oxidation. Arsenic content reached 173 mg kg?1 in the Fe plaque. This accumulation induced a depletion of As in soil solution over several millimetres in the rhizosphere. Arsenic contents in root symplast and shoots (112 and 2.3 mg kg?1, respectively) were significantly lower than in Fe plaque. Despite a large As concentration in soil solution, Fe plaque appeared highly efficient to sequester As and to restrict As acquisition by rice. The oxidation-mediated accumulation of As in the Fe plaque and in the oxidised layer at the top of the soil mobilised 21 and 3% of the initial amount of As in the planted and unplanted soils, respectively. Soil solution As concentration steadily decreased during the last 16 days of the soil stage, likely indicating a decrease in the ability of the soil to re-supply As from the solid-phase to the solution. The driving force of As dynamic in soil was therefore attributed to the As diffusion from reduced to oxidised soil layers. These results suggest a large mobility of As in the soil during the flooded period, controlled by the setting of oxic/anoxic interfaces at the surface of soil in contact with flooding water and in the rhizosphere of rice.  相似文献

An in vitro plant regeneration system was established from the spores of Pteris vittata and identification of its tolerance, and accumulation of gametophytes and callous, to arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) was investigated. The highest frequency (100%) of callus formation was achieved from gametophyte explants treated with 0.5 mg l?1 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) + 0.5 mg l?1 gibberellin acid (GA). Furthermore, sporophytes were differentiated from the callus tissue derived from gametophyte explants on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg l?1 6-BA, 0.5–1.0 mg l?1 GA and additional 300 mg l?1 lactalbumin hydrolysate (LH) for 4 weeks. The optimum combination of ½ MS + 1.0 mg l?1 GA + 0.5 mg l?1 6-BA + 300 mg l?1 LH promoted sporophyte formation on 75 ± 10% of the callus. Every callus derived from gametophyte explants could achieve 3–4 sporophytes. The in vitro growth of gametophyte and callus was accelerated in the medium containing Na3AsO4 lower than 0.5 mM, but this growth was inhibited with 2 mM Na3AsO4. And with the increase of Na3AsO4 in the culture medium from 0 to 2 mM, the As accumulation in gametophytes and callus increased and achieved a level of 763.3 and 315.4 mg kg?1, respectively. Gametophytes and calluses transplanted to culture medium, supplemented with different concentrations of CuSO4, are similar to those in Na3AsO4, and the Cu accumulation in gametophytes could achieve 7,940 mg kg?1 when gametophytes were subcultured in medium containing 3 mM CuSO4. These results suggested that the high efficiency propagation system could be a useful and rapid means to identify other heavy metal tolerance and accumulation. Further, the regeneration ability of callus made it possible for genetic transformation of this fern.  相似文献

A study quantifying the interactive effects of cadmium (Cd) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on plant growth and Cd accumulation of pot-cultured Spartina alterniflora was conducted. The experiment consisted of two Cd levels (50, 200 mg kg?1) as well as two CNTs levels (800, 2,400 mg kg?1). As expected, CNTs alleviated higher Cd stress (200 mg kg?1) due to restored shoot growth reduction, retrieved water content and resumed plant height. Furthermore, CNTs mitigated the deleterious effects of Cd stress through improving K+ and Ca2+ contents, while reducing Na+/K+ and Na+/Ca2+ ratios, regardless of the level of Cd stress. The proline contents in combined Cd and CNTs treatments were lower than Cd alone, suggesting that CNTs could reduce production of organic solutes under Cd stress. The results also showed higher Cd accumulation in roots than shoots, and both were improved by CNTs, except inhibition in roots under higher Cd stress (200 mg kg?1). It appears that CNTs may not significantly affect negative Cd effects on growth of S. alterniflora, but improve total Cd accumulation under lower Cd stress (50 mg kg?1). However, under higher Cd stress (200 mg kg?1), CNTs restored the reduced plant growth, improved and reduced Cd accumulation in shoots and roots, respectively. Therefore, the effects of CNTs on plant growth and Cd accumulation are different, and levels of Cd stress should be considered when evaluating the combined application of CNTs and S. alterniflora on phytoremediation of Cd pollution.  相似文献

Arsenic toxicity to rice (Oryza sativa L.) in Bangladesh   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Natural contamination of groundwater with arsenic (As) occurs around the world but is most widespread in the river basin deltas of South and Southeast Asia. Shallow groundwater is extensively used in the Bengal basin for irrigation of rice in the dry winter season, leading to the possibility of As accumulation in soils, toxicity to rice and increased levels of As in rice grain and straw. The impact of As contaminated irrigation water on soil-As content and rice productivity was studied over two winter-season rice crops in the command area of a single tubewell in Faridpur district, Bangladesh. After 16–17 years of use of the tubewell, a spatially variable build up of As and other chemical constituents of the water (Fe, Mn and P) was observed over the command area, with soil-As levels ranging from about 10 to 70 mg kg?1. A simple mass balance calculation using the current water As level of 0.13 mg As L?1 suggested that 96% of the added arsenic was retained in the soil. When BRRI dhan 29 rice was grown in two successive years across this soil-As gradient, yield declined progressively from 7–9 to 2–3 t ha?1 with increasing soil-As concentration. The average yield loss over the 8 ha command area was estimated to be 16%. Rice-straw As content increased with increasing soil-As concentration; however, the toxicity of As to rice resulted in reduced grain-As concentrations in one of the 2 years. The likelihood of As-induced yield reductions and As accumulation in straw and grain has implications to agricultural sustainability, food quality and food security in As-affected regions throughout South and Southeast Asia.  相似文献

The present study reports, for the first time, an efficient in vitro plant regeneration protocol for Digitalis ferruginea subsp. ferruginea L. (rusty foxglove). We have used different concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3) on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium to assess the germination frequency of seeds. High frequency of germination was achieved on MS medium with 1.0 mg l?1 GA3. 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) combined with α-naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA) or 2, 4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2, 4-D) in the induction MS medium induced both somatic embryogensis and shoot organogenesis. The highest percentage of callus growth (85 %) was obtained when hypocotyl explants were cultured on MS medium containing 0.5 mg l?1 2, 4-D plus 1.0 mg l?1 BAP. The maximum mean number of somatic embryos (7.3 ± 1.3 embryos) or shoots (12.0 ± 1.1 shoots) per callus was obtained when medium contained 0.25 mg l?1 NAA plus 1.0 mg l?1 BAP or 0.5 mg l?1 NAA plus 2.0 mg l?1 BAP. The regenerated shoots easily rooted on MS medium. Higher amounts of lanatoside C [13.2 ± 0.5 mg 100 g?1 dry weight (dw)] and digoxin (2.93 ± 0.31 mg 100 g?1 dw) accumulation were obtained when shoots were obtained by indirect regeneration. We also investigated derivatives of cardenolides, i.e., digitoxigenin (730 ± 180 mg 100 g?1 dw), gitoxigenin (50 ± 20 mg 100 g?1 dw) and digoxigenin (490 ± 170 mg 100 g?1 dw) from natural samples.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The effects of Sb(V), alone or combined with Se, on the growth and root development of plants are unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the interaction between selenite and different forms of Sb and the effects on their uptake in rice and on rice root morphology.

Methods

A hydroponic experiment was conducted that contained fourteen treatments. The treatment levels for Se were 0.5 and 1 mg L?1, and the treatment levels for Sb(III) and Sb(V) were 5 and 15 mg L?1.

Results

Sb(V) alone significantly reduced the surface area, mean diameter and volume of the roots, whereas Sb(III) alone reduced the values of most parameters of root morphology. The addition of 1 mg L?1 Se significantly enhanced the surface area, number of medium roots, and Sb concentration in the roots subjected to 15 mg L?1 Sb(V), but it decreased the number of root forks, the number and proportion of fine roots, and the shoot Sb concentration under exposure to 15 mg L?1 Sb(III). When the plants were subjected to 1 mg L?1 Se, the addition of 15 mg L?1 Sb(III) markedly reduced the shoot and root Se concentrations and the number of root tips, root forks, and fine roots and increased the mean root diameter. However, the addition of Sb(V) did not significantly affect the root and shoot Se concentrations but significantly decreased the number of root forks and fine roots and increased the proportion of medium roots.

Conclusions

Se and Sb(III) showed antagonistic effects on uptake in the shoots, but not in the roots, of paddy rice. A range of Se concentrations could stimulate the uptake of Sb in both the shoots and roots of paddy rice exposed to Sb(V).
