A benthic macroinvertebrate and sediment chemistry study of the St. Clair River from Lake Huron to Lake St. Clair was conducted in the spring of 1985. The purpose of the. study was to evaluate the environmental quality of the nearshore areas and assess the effectiveness of industrial and municipal abatement programs that have been implemented since 1977.A total of 112 macroinvertebratd taxa was collected from the river. Classification analysis indicated that 7 macroinvertebrate communities were evident in the river. Discriminant analysis suggested that physical habitat characteristics explained the distribution of 4 benthic communities, while sediment contaminants explained the distribution of 3 benthic communities. These analyses showed that the environmental quality of a 12 km stretch of the river along the Canadian shoreline had been degraded, probably by industrial waste discharges and spills. Toxic conditions were evident along the waterfront of Dow Chemical Canada Inc., probably a result of the combined effects of chlorinated organics, oils and greases, and mercury (historical contaminant) in the sediments. In contrast, the invertebrate fauna throughout the remainder of the St. Clair River reflected meso-eutrophic conditions, typical of a large, unstressed river.A comparison of the environmental quality as reflected by the benthic invertebrate fauna in 1985 with that in 1977 suggests that the abatement programs implemented over the past decade have improved the environmental quality along the Canadian side of the river. The total length of river adversely affected by waste discharges from Canadian industries and municipalities decreased from 21 km in 1977 to 12 km in 1985.  相似文献

Multiple discriminant analysis is applied, in a general benthic survey, to correlate the animal associations with some measurements of physical and chemical variables. Four major macrobenthic assemblages are identified in the study area. In addition, species characterizing the various faunal groups are defined. The delineation of such animal assemblages is mainly due to the relative organic carbon content and the fine silt-clay fraction (positive graphic skewness) of the sediment, which is largely deposited in the sampling area by a river drainage. The application of multiple discriminant analysis to demonstrate such correlative relationships between biotic and abiotic variables in benthic studies is discussed.  相似文献

Benthic maps are broad-scale characterizations that lack the detailed environmental attributes which have been the focus of most prior empirical studies linking reef fish and habitat. We used multivariate analyses to quantify correlations among fish assemblages, local habitat variables, and reef types depicted in benthic maps. Benthic maps of a study system in the U.S. Virgin Islands with high (100 m2 minimum mapping unit) and low (4,048 m2 minimum mapping unit) spatial resolution, respectively, were evaluated. Benthic maps depicted six reef types and two shelf positions (lagoon vs. shelf). Fish assemblages and local environmental variables were quantified at random sites throughout the landscape by diver surveys. Multivariate ordination based on either fish assemblages or environmental data did not result in well-separated groups of sites. Mapped reef types were not associated with distinct values of either local environmental variables or fish assemblages. Reef types exhibited substantial overlap in ordination plots based on benthic characteristics with groupings based on fish assemblages showing even greater overlap. Ordination patterns involving reef type were largely the same for both low- and high-resolution maps. In contrast, sites showed clear groups for lagoon and shelf in ordinations based on both environmental variables and fish assemblage composition, respectively. These results suggest that knowledge of the overall fish assemblage or fine-scale environmental characteristics could not be used to predict reef type depicted in benthic maps or vice versa. In contrast, reef zone could be used to predict fish assemblage or fine-scale environmental variables and vice versa.  相似文献

The organic pollution status of three inland water bodies in Sri Lanka was evaluated using benthic oligochaete communities with the environmental characteristics considering temporal variation over one year period. Oligochaete species richness and abundance was consistently higher in the highly eutrophic and organically polluted Lake Beira in comparison with the less polluted water bodies. In a cluster analysis of oligochaete community compositions, the assemblages grouped by the water bodies rather than by months. Principal component analysis revealed that the structure of the oligochate community was mainly influenced by conductivity, nitrate, biochemical oxygen demand levels of water and organic carbon content of the sediment. In the ordination, the polluted Lake Beira separated from the other water bodies along the first axis. The results revealed that there could be a potential for using benthic oligochaetes for bioassessment of inland water bodies in Sri Lanka. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We examined the impacts of climate change on Antarctic nearshore marine benthic communities on the West Antarctic Peninsula, one of the most rapidly warming regions on earth. We surveyed the epibenthic megafaunal assemblages of Marian Cove, a representative fjord on King George Island. We collected specimens by SCUBA diving at varying distances from the retreating glacier front during the 2013/2014 austral summer. Based on presence/absence data from the collected taxa, we determined species richness (S), taxonomic distinctness (TD) and functional diversity (FD) and further analyzed differences in assemblages in relation to environmental characteristics. Faunal assemblages in the inner cove (ice-proximal zone) were compositionally distinct from those in the outer cove. Species number and FD were also lower in the inner cove and tended to increase toward the outer cove. Nonetheless, TD values were similar among sites, indicating that all sites were distinct taxonomically. This may be because glacier retreat affected organisms of lower taxonomic levels the most. Multivariate and univariate analyses demonstrated that these differences were significantly related to distance from the glacier, substrate grain size, and organic content. The high correlation (R = 0.909, P < 0.01) of assemblages with distance from the glacier front suggests that physical disturbance by ice is a major process shaping benthic communities. Thus, we provide evidence that glacier retreat and its consequent processes impact the structure and function of communities. With their spatial pattern significantly associated with environmental suites, nearshore megabenthic communities respond sensitively and measurably to climate-induced impacts, suggesting their utility as long-term biomonitors. As a small but confined glacial cove with very distinct environmental gradients related to climate-induced processes, Marian Cove could serve as a model ecosystem for assessing climate impacts on Antarctic nearshore benthic communities.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the relationship between environmental parameters (water and sediment) and benthic foraminiferal assemblages found in nearshore siliciclastic sediment in the Arabian Gulf. Nearshore marine water and sediment samples were collected from a beach on the Gulf of Bahrain located south of Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The water samples were analyzed for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and other chemical analyses. The sediment samples were tested for sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and heavy metal analysis. Results showed the BOD5 levels were below the detection limit (<1 ppm), while the mean SOD value was 0.97 ± 0.08 g/m2·day. The water and sediments were unpolluted and free of eutrophic enrichment, while the sediment was anoxic. The two most common genera in the benthic foraminiferal assemblage, Ammonia and Elphidium, are typical of shallow water sandy substrates. This is the first reported comparison between SOD and benthic foraminiferal assemblages.  相似文献

Contaminated sediment has been identified as one of the major impediments to ecosystem restoration, but there has been little progress made in the management of sediment contaminants. Four primary lines of evidence are generally required for informed assessments yet the integration of these various lines of evidence is problematic. Using data from 220 reference sites located in the nearshore zone of the Laurentian Great Lakes the normal response of four species of laboratory organisms to sediments representing a wide range of sediment characteristics was examined. The toxicity data from the reference sites were used to establish categories of responses to test sediments. The delineations for the three categories were developed from the standard statistical parameters of population mean and standard deviation (mean ± SD) of an endpoint measured in all reference sediments. Three approaches for integrating information were examined; the first two are score based, the third approach uses a multivariate statistical method to integrate the responses. The methods were examined using both artificial and real test site data and from this it was concluded that ordination is the superior of the three. It is the least subjective within the context of the integration of the endpoints, is quantitative, and also provides appropriate weighting based on the variation observed within reference sites.  相似文献

Recent shifts in water quality and food web characteristics driven by anthropogenic impacts on the Laurentian Great Lakes warranted an examination of pelagic primary producers as tracers of environmental change. The distributions of the 263 common phytoplankton taxa were related to water quality variables to determine taxon-specific responses that may be useful in indicator models. A detailed checklist of taxa and their environmental optima are provided. Multivariate analyses indicated a strong relationship between total phosphorus (TP) and patterns in the diatom assemblages across the Great Lakes. Of the 118 common diatom taxa, 90 (76%) had a directional response along the TP gradient. We further evaluated a diatom-based transfer function for TP based on the weighted-average abundance of taxa, assuming unimodal distributions along the TP gradient. The r2 between observed and inferred TP in the training dataset was 0.79. Substantial spatial and environmental autocorrelation within the training set of samples justified the need for further model validation. A randomization procedure indicated that the actual transfer function consistently performed better than functions based on reshuffled environmental data. Further, TP was minimally confounded by other environmental variables, as indicated by the relatively large amount of unique variance in the diatoms explained by TP. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the transfer function by hindcasting TP concentrations using fossil diatom assemblages in a Lake Superior sediment core. Passive, multivariate analysis of the fossil samples against the training set indicated that phosphorus was a strong determinant of historical diatom assemblages, verifying that the transfer function was suited to reconstruct past TP in Lake Superior. Collectively, these results showed that phytoplankton coefficients for water quality can be robust indicators of Great Lakes pelagic condition. The diatom-based transfer function can be used in lake management when retrospective data are needed for tracking long-term degradation, remediation and trajectories.  相似文献

Nematode communities of Lake Tana and other inland water bodies of Ethiopia   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Free-living nematodes from littoral benthic sediments of four lakes, two rivers and a hot spring in Ethiopia are studied. Populations of nematodes encountered are identified to the species level. The general nematode (generic and species) composition of the lakes, rivers and hot spring are appraised by giving special emphasis to the nematodes from L. Tana, i.e. three sites where different environmental factors come into play were considered. Gelda is a site close to a river inlet (River Gelda), Gedero is a site exposed to strong wind action while Zegie is a secluded site protected by a land mass from any strong wind action. Nematode communities were identified using classification and ordination techniques. The identified communities are then characterised with respect to species composition, biomass, density, diversity, size structure, feeding type and maturity index. Also, the vertical distribution of nematodes is examined at the community and species level. An attempt has been made to associate these variations with the considered environmental factors viz. site, water depth, sediment depth, median grain size and percentage of mud in the sediment.  相似文献

In transitional waters the process of defining reference conditions (in the scope of the WFD) must account for the natural great variability of such environments. Therefore, stretches reflecting different physical–chemical and biological conditions throughout the system should be defined in order to correctly establish benthic specific reference conditions. Both salinity and sediment structure are major factors controlling physical–chemical conditions and therefore organisms’ distribution within an estuary. These environmental variables (salinity, sediment grain size composition and organic matter content) patterns were studied in the Mondego estuary and some clear gradients emerged. Also, ecological indices (AMBI, Margalef and Shannon-Wiener) were applied to subtidal benthic communities of the Mondego estuary and, generally, there was not only evidence of a decrease in diversity in the estuary from the downstream section towards its inner parts, but also differences were found between areas of distinct sediment composition. After comparing environmental patterns with biodiversity trends, the information was used to define homogeneous sectors along a temperate estuary in Portugal. In the Mondego estuary six zones, covering the main physical gradients affecting benthic communities, were defined: four in the northern arm and two in southern arm. Zones established will allow future determination of benthic reference conditions adjusted for each of the sectors, according to their characteristics, and consequently the conditions they provide for benthic assemblages settlement.  相似文献

为了解石油开采对湿地生态系统的影响,2009年10月调查了黄河三角洲东营湿地34个样点的水体物理化学属性和大型底栖无脊椎动物群落结构。共获得3门6纲12目41科70属84个大型底栖无脊椎动物分类单元。Shannon-Wiener多样性指数(r=-0.446,P=0.02)和TN显著负相关,BI指数与理化指标无显著相关性;软体动物分类单元数与盐度(r=-0.422,P=0.028)显著负相关,与pH值(r=0.435,P=0.023)显著正相关;软体动物个体百分数同样与盐度(r=-0.395,P=0.041)呈显著负相关,与pH值(r=0.565,P=0.002)呈极显著正相关;寡毛类分类单元数与TN(r=0.524,P=0.005)极显著正相关。水体石油含量与生物指数无显著相关性。典范对应分析(CCA)显示,TN、pH、盐度是影响东营湿地底栖动物群落结构的主要环境变量,水体石油污染并不是主要的胁迫因子。寡毛类和软体动物是该地区对环境变化的主要指示生物类群。Shannon-Wiener多样性指数水质生物评价结果显示,溢洪河支流、广利河上游、挑河上游、东张水库属于清洁;轻污点位有9个,其余点位为中污或重污。  相似文献

Eight mesohabitats, visually distinct units of habitat withinthestream, were sampled seasonally in a lowland chalkstreamreach. Theaim of the study was to test if mesohabitats defined asstructuralunits were inhabited by particular species assemblages and howthese varied with season. Classification (Bray-Curtisdissimilarityindex and UPGMA) and ordination analyses (DCA) of thedistributionof 258 species in 230 samples, were first used to check theagreement between the subjectively-selected mesohabitat andtheirassociated faunal assemblages. There was a goodcorrespondence, andmesohabitat samples were grouped into 5 major groups (Ranunculusin spring, silt, sand, gravel and macrophytes)whichwere further sub-divided to give a total of 11 groups whenseasonaldifferences were considered. Spearman rank correlation betweenthespatial distribution of mesohabitat groups with environmentalvariables revealed that water velocity and flow dynamicstogetherwith the nature of the substratum, influenced the distributionofthe benthic communities. To evaluate qualitative andquantitativedifferences in taxa composition among mesohabitats,informationstatistics tests and analyses of variance were used incombinationwith the Tukey honestly significant difference test. The 11groupswere characterised by abundance and frequency indicatorspecies.Inverse analysis of dominant species of the community showed agoodequivalence with mesohabitat groups and their indicatorspeciesobtained by direct analysis. The resulting species assemblagesrepresent faunal adaptation to the particular mesohabitats inrelation to natural environmental fluctuations. The shallow macrobenthic communities of Wallis and Smiths Lakes on the central N.S. W. coast have been studied by replicate grab samples. Wallis Lake is a coastal marine lagoon constantly open to the sea, whereas Smiths Lake, also a coastal lagoon, is periodically closed to the sea for several months at a time. The benthic communities were described using indices of dominance and diversity. Between site communities were compared using MULTBET and a GOWER ordination. Generally, sites in Wallis Lake had a more diverse fauna than those in Smiths Lake. Weed beds supported more species and individuals than sandy substrates. The benthic fauna of these two lakes is compared with other coastal rivers and lagoons which have been studied in temperate eastern Australia.  相似文献

Macroinvertebrate assemblages were related to environmental factors that were quantified at the sample scale in streams subjected to a gradient of cattle grazing. Environmental factors and macroinvertebrates were concurrently collected so assemblage structure could be directly related to environmental factors and the relative importance of stressors associated with cattle grazing in structuring assemblages could be assessed. Based on multivariate and inferential statistics, measures of physical habitat (% fines and substrate homogeneity) had the strongest relationships with macroinvertebrate assemblage structure. Detrital food variables (coarse benthic and fine benthic organic matter) were also associated with assemblage structure, but the relationships were never as strong as those with physical habitat measures, while autochthonous food variables (chlorophyll a and epilithic biomass) appeared to have no association with assemblage structure. The amount of variation explained in taxa composition and macroinvertebrate metrics is within values reported from studies that have examined macroinvertebrate metric–sediment relationships. The % Coleoptera and % crawlers had consistent relationships with % fines during this study, which suggests they may be useful metrics when sediment is a suspected stressor to macroinvertebrate assemblages in Blue Ridge streams. Findings from this study also demonstrate the importance of quantitative sampling through time when research goals are to identify relationships between macroinvertebrates and environmental factors.  相似文献

Changes in the structure of tenebrionid beetle, lizard and rodent communities along the aridity gradient that determines the position of a phytogeographic province boundary were studied to test: (1) whether there are two different species assemblages on either side of the boundary (2) the extent of their differentiation and (3) if they are composed of different or the same faunal elements. Several ordination methods were tested for their capacity to reflect community structure, and discriminant function analysis was selected as the primary method of ordination. Each of the ordination axes reflected a complex environmental gradient. The latter was different for each taxon. The gradient of productivity cross-cuts ecological space for each animal group in an individual manner. Revealed spatial assemblages of species were related to the level of productivity. There was one assemblage of species at high productivity and one or two assemblages occurred at low productivity in each taxon. The α–diversity curve of rodents changed weakly along the productivity gradient, whereas those of lizard and beetle communities were distinctly unimodal and had maxima near the middle of the gradient. β–diversity curves of rodents had a concave shape, but those of lizard and beetle communities increased from low productivity values to the middle of the gradient and after that weakly declined to the upper (productive) end of the gradient. Seven types of ranges or areographic groups of species were distinguished. Each species assemblage was composed of different faunal elements. Comparison of the results of ecological and areographic analyses demonstrated that two assemblages of rodents and lizards represent different guilds within the same community rather than different communities. The phytogeographic border for these taxa is an ecological rather than a geographical boundary. The difference between the two tenebrionid assemblages appears to be zoogeographical rather than ecological, and coincides with the phytogeographic boundary.  相似文献

Chironomids (Diptera: Chironomidae) in northern lakes are especially sensitive to climate change impacts. In addition, environmental factors other than direct temperature increase might play an important role in functioning of these keystone aquatic communities. We examined 31 lakes at the treeline ecotone in subarctic Finnish Lapland for their surface sediment chironomid fauna to assess the influence of different environmental factors on the communities. We aim to improve understanding of the climate-driven catchment and limnological factors, for the assessment of climate change impacts. Our results indicated that organic content of the sediment, total nitrogen, water depth and pH that are all likely to change under global warming had statistically significant influence on the chironomid assemblages and associated indicator taxa were assigned for these variables. In addition, a dissolved organic carbon (DOC) threshold (4 mg l−1) was observed that divided the study sites based on their chironomid composition. Sites with high DOC concentrations and benthic microbial mats had distinctive chironomid fauna from low-DOC sites without microbial mats indicating the significance of benthic versus planktonic productivity in the structure and functioning of polar lakes. The results provide important knowledge on chironomid-environmental relationships in climate-sensitive subarctic lakes and create basis for chironomid-based environmental change assessments in remote northern areas.  相似文献

This study examined echinoderm assemblages from nearshore rocky habitats for large-scale distribution patterns with specific emphasis on identifying latitudinal trends and large regional hotspots. Echinoderms were sampled from 76 globally-distributed sites within 12 ecoregions, following the standardized sampling protocol of the Census of Marine Life NaGISA project (www.nagisa.coml.org). Sample-based species richness was overall low (<1-5 species per site), with a total of 32 asteroid, 18 echinoid, 21 ophiuroid, and 15 holothuroid species. Abundance and species richness in intertidal assemblages sampled with visual methods (organisms >2 cm in 1 m(2) quadrats) was highest in the Caribbean ecoregions and echinoids dominated these assemblages with an average of 5 ind m(-2). In contrast, intertidal echinoderm assemblages collected from clearings of 0.0625 m(2) quadrats had the highest abundance and richness in the Northeast Pacific ecoregions where asteroids and holothurians dominated with an average of 14 ind 0.0625 m(-2). Distinct latitudinal trends existed for abundance and richness in intertidal assemblages with declines from peaks at high northern latitudes. No latitudinal trends were found for subtidal echinoderm assemblages with either sampling technique. Latitudinal gradients appear to be superseded by regional diversity hotspots. In these hotspots echinoderm assemblages may be driven by local and regional processes, such as overall productivity and evolutionary history. We also tested a set of 14 environmental variables (six natural and eight anthropogenic) as potential drivers of echinoderm assemblages by ecoregions. The natural variables of salinity, sea-surface temperature, chlorophyll a, and primary productivity were strongly correlated with echinoderm assemblages; the anthropogenic variables of inorganic pollution and nutrient contamination also contributed to correlations. Our results indicate that nearshore echinoderm assemblages appear to be shaped by a network of environmental and ecological processes, and by the differing responses of various echinoderm taxa, making generalizations about the patterns of nearshore rocky habitat echinoderm assemblages difficult.  相似文献

Cross-taxon congruence has been suggested as an efficient tool in conservation planning and biodiversity monitoring. It corresponds to the degree to which patterns in assemblage structure in a set of sites are similar among different taxonomic groups. If different groups ordinate the sampling sites similarly, they are concordant and this information is frequently used as an indicative that one group could be used as a surrogate for the other. Using spatiotemporal benthic data from a biodiverse coastal ecosystem (the Araçá Bay in southeast Brazil), we first assessed if macro- and meiofaunal assemblages inhabiting marine soft-sediments show concordant patterns. Then, we used multi- and univariate analysis to examine the relationship of both groups with the environment. Macro- and meiofaunal assemblages exhibited strong congruent patterns in all periods analyzed. Moreover, both groups responded to similar environmental features and their ordination patterns matched those generated by the environmental data. These results show that the patterns of concordance are probably mediated by similar responses to environmental gradients. Overall, our results suggest the potential for use of the surrogacy approach in conservation planning and monitoring purposes of marine benthic biodiversity, and that macro- and meiofauna can be used as a surrogate for each other.  相似文献

Surface sediment samples taken by box corer from 32 stations on the Iceland-Scotland Ridge have been investigated for their benthic foraminiferal content. The live (Rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminiferal fauna was differentiated from empty tests comprising the foraminiferal death assemblage. Principal component analysis of both the live and dead faunal data from the Iceland-Scotland Ridge reveals eight live species assemblages and six corresponding dead assemblages. Bottom water current conditions, surface sediment characteristics, particulate organic matter supply, and to some extent also the bottom water temperatures are the main factors limiting and governing the composition and distribution of live benthic foraminiferal species assemblages on the Iceland-Scotland Ridge. On the Atlantic slope of the Iceland-Scotland Ridge the dead species assemblages differ greatly from the foraminiferal fauna living there today due to winnowing processes and redeposition of Pleistocene sediments. In this area an investigation of distribution patterns of the empty tests only would lead to wrong results concerning ecologic interrelations between benthic foraminiferal species assemblages and their environment.  相似文献
