Thyroid hormones are associated with the oxidative and antioxidative status of the organism. Since data on the oxidative status of hypothyroidism are limited and controversial, we investigated the oxidant and antioxidant status and serum paraoxonase/arylesterase activities in propylthiouracil-induced hypothyroidism and examined the effect of vitamin E supplementation on this experimental model. Forty male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups (group 1, control; group 2, control + vitamin E; group 3, propylthiouracil; group 4, propylthiouracil + vitamin E). Plasma, red blood cell, liver, heart and skeletal muscle malondialdehyde levels were increased in the propylthiouracil-treated group compared with the control rats and were decreased in propylthiouracil + vitamin E group compared with the propylthiouracil-treated group. Vitamin E supplementation also significantly increased liver and kidney reduced glutathione levels in propylthiouracil treated animals. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were decreased in propylthiouracil treated group and vitamin E supplementation caused significant increase in serum paraoxonase activity compared with the propylthiouracil-treated rats. These findings suggest that hypothyroidism is accompanied with increased oxidative stress and vitamin E supplementation exerts beneficial effects on this situation.  相似文献

Undomesticated, wild, nonhuman animals with an excitable temperament frequently sustain injuries when handled for veterinary procedures such as blood sampling or injections. Both bison and antelope may become agitated when they are restrained, often resulting in broken horns. Also, antelope may panic when restraint is forced on them suddenly. This research group has successfully trained both Bongo and Nyala antelope to enter a box voluntarily for food rewards. While quiet, nonsedated antelope were standing in the box, blood samples were taken from their rear legs. Three Bongo antelope who had been conditioned to stand in the box had low cortisol levels that averaged 4.4 ± 3.4 ng/ml in a male and 8.5 ± 4.7 ng/ml in two females. The unsedated animals were held in the box for 10-20 min to allow cortisol levels to rise. These values were much lower than cortisol levels reported in the literature for restrained unsedated wild ruminants and domestic cattle who are not habituated to restraint. Because antelope are flighty animals, each new step in the conditioning process had to be introduced in very small steps to prevent panic. In another experiment, bison calves were trained to walk through the handling chutes for feed rewards. In both species, avoiding panic is important, especially in the early stages of training.  相似文献

Closely monitoring snow leopard (Uncia uncia) fetal developments via transabdominal ultrasound, with minimal stress to the animal, was the goal of this project. The staff at Potter Park Zoo has used the principles of habituation, desensitization, and positive reinforcement to train a female snow leopard (U. uncia). Ultrasound examinations were preformed on an unanesthetized feline at 63 and 84 days. The animal remained calm and compliant throughout both procedures. Fetuses were observed and measured on both occasions. The absence of anesthesia eliminated components of psychologic and physiologic stress associated with sedation. This was the first recorded instance of transabdominal ultrasound being carried out on an unanesthetized snow leopard. It documents the feasibility of detecting pregnancy and monitoring fetal development via ultrasound. Zoo Biol 27:78–85, 2008. © 2007 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Effects of oral vitamin E supplementation on blood malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and vitamin E levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) enzyme activities in acute hypothermia of guinea-pigs were investigated. Thirty male guinea pigs, weighing 500-800 g were randomly divided into one of three experimental groups: A (control, without cooling), B (hypothermic) and C (hypothermic with vitamin E supplementation). The guinea-pigs of group C received daily oral supplementation of 460 mg kg(-1) bw vitamin E for 4 days before inducing hypothermia. Twenty-four hours after the last vitamin E supplementation, the guinea-pigs of the B and C groups were cooled by immersion into cold water (10-12 degrees C), and the control guinea-pigs were immersed into water of body temperature (37 degrees C) up to the neck for 5 min without using any anaesthetic or tranquilizer. Rectal body temperatures of groups were measured and blood samples for biochemical analysis were collected immediately after the cooling. The body temperature, GSH and vitamin E levels and GSH-Px enzyme activity of hypothermic guinea-pigs were lower (p < 0.05), but SOD enzyme activity was not different (p > 0.05) from those of control animals. Although, the body temperature of hypothermic with vitamin E supplementation group was lower (p < 0.05), all other parameters of this group were not different (p > 0.05) from the controls. It was concluded that oral supplementation of vitamin E can alleviate the lipid peroxidation-induced disturbances associated with hypothermia by increasing the serum vitamin E level to normal. However, more studies are needed to prove whether this vitamin can improve quality of life during the cold seasons.  相似文献

Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that has been used in animal and human studies to determine its potential in reducing cardiovascular risk; however, a detailed study in an established obese model of atherosclerosis has yet to be performed. In our current study, we show that obesity and hyperlipidemia cause a synergistic, age-related increase in urinary isoprostane levels in mice deficient in both leptin and low-density lipoprotein receptor (ob/ob;LDLR-/-). Based upon this observation, we hypothesized that vitamin E supplementation would induce potent antiatherogenic effects in this model. Lean and obese LDLR-/- mice were provided vitamin E (2000 IU/kg) in a Western-type high-fat diet for 12 weeks. Plasma lipid parameters, such as total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and free fatty acid, were significantly higher in obese mice compared to lean mice at baseline (P<.001). Western-type diet (WD) feeding caused an increase in TC levels in all groups (P<.001); however, TG (P<.001) and free fatty acid (P<.01) were elevated only in lean mice following WD feeding. Vitamin E supplementation neither influenced any of these parameters nor reduced urinary isoprostanes in lean or obese mice. Vitamin E supplementation in ob/ob;LDLR-/- mice resulted in a trend toward a reduction in atherosclerotic lesion area (P=.10), although no differences in lesion area were noted in lean LDLR-/- animals. These data provide evidence that vitamin E supplementation is not sufficient to reduce extreme elevations in systemic oxidative stress due to hyperlipidemia and obesity and, thus, may not be cardioprotective in this setting.  相似文献

Diabetes induces oxidative stress in aged human and rat, although daily supplementation of vitamins C and E (VCE) can be beneficial to aged diabetic rats by reducing free radical production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether dietary VCE supplementation relieves oxidative stress in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic in aged rats. Thirty aged rats were randomly divided into three groups. The first group was used as a control. The second group was made diabetic using a single dose of intraperitoneal STZ. VCE-supplemented feed was given to aged diabetic rats constituting the third group. On the 21st day of the experiment, blood, lens and kidney samples were taken from all animals. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in lens and kidney, reduced glutathione (GSH), vitamin E and β-carotene concentrations in kidney were lower in the diabetic group than in the control whereas plasma glucose, urea and creatinine, and kidney and lens peroxidation (LP) levels were higher in the diabetic group than in the control. However, kidney and lens LP levels, and plasma glucose, urea and creatinine values were decreased by VCE supplementation. Lens and kidney GSH-Px activity, kidney GSH, vitamin E and β-carotene concentrations and erythrocyte counts were increased by VCE treatment. Kidney weights, vitamin A, haemoglobin, hematocrit, leukocyte and platelets values were not changed by diabetes and/or VCE supplementation. VCE ameliorated also diabetes-induced histopathological changes in kidney. In conclusion, we observed that VCE supplementation is beneficial towards kidney and lens of aged diabetic rats by modulating oxidative and antioxidant systems.  相似文献

Traditional techniques used to capture New World monkeys, such as net capture, can induce high levels of acute stress detrimental to welfare. Alternatively, training nonhuman animals via operant conditioning to voluntarily participate in husbandry and/or veterinary practices is accepted as a humane process that can reduce stress and improve welfare. This study details the use of operant conditioning using positive reinforcement training (PRT) and target training to train a family of 5 captive red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus) in a wildlife park to voluntarily enter a transportation box and remain calm for 1 min after 54 training sessions. Observations of 2 unrelated net-capture processes provided measures of locomotion and vocalizations as indicators of stress behavior that were compared with those of the trained tamarins. Net-captured monkeys exhibited rapid erratic locomotion and emitted long, high-frequency vocalizations during capture whereas the trained tamarins exhibited minimal locomotion and emitted only 4 brief vocalizations (root mean square 35 dB) during capture. This indicates that the use of PRT considerably reduced potential for stress and improved welfare during the capture and containment of the tamarins.  相似文献

Diabetes induced by streptozotocin (50 mg/kg body wt, i.p.) in the rats substantially increased the plasma glucose and malondialdehyde levels along with corresponding decrease in the antioxidants levels. Supplementation of vitamin E (200 mg/kg body wt., ip) for 5 weeks resulted in non-significant decrease in the blood glucose levels but plasma malondialdehyde levels were reduced to below normal levels. Plasma vitamin E, vitamin C, uric acid and red blood cell glutathione levels were also restored to near normal levels on vitamin E supplementation to diabetic rats as compared to control (diabetic) rats. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, catalase (EC 1.11.1.6), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx EC 1.11.1.9), and glutathione reductase (GR EC 1.6.4.2) were also concomitantly restored to near normal levels by vitamin E supplementation to diabetic rats. The results clearly demonstrated that vitamin E supplementation augments the antioxidant defense mechanism in diabetes and provides evidence that vitamin E may have a therapeutic role in free radical mediated diseases.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of vitamin A supplementation on serum vitamin E in adult female northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus ). In the first experiment five animals received, in addition to their routine dietary multivitamin supplement, a high-level vitamin A supplement (53 μmol retinyl palmitate/d) for 30 d. Five seals consuming their routine dietary supplement served as controls. Serum vitamin E decreased significantly in animals receiving high-level vitamin A supplements. At the end of 30 d serum vitamin E averaged 18.6 μg/mL in the control animals and 13.4 μg/mL in the animals receiving the high-Ieve1 vitamin A supplement. In experiment 2 ten animals received the high level vitamin A supplement for 60 d. After 30 d, serum vitamin E levels were reduced, but by 60 d had returned to baseline levels. However, the ratio of serum vitamin E to phospholipid, another index of vitamin E status, remained decreased. Although the exact mechanism of interaction is unknown, this study shows that when providing vitamin supplements for captive pinnipeds, vitamin interactions must be considered. The vitamin A supplementation currently used by some institutions seems unnecessary and may have detrimental effects on vitamin E status.  相似文献

Veterinary and management procedures often are aversive to the animals, resulting in physiological and behavioural stress reactions, which increase the risk of accidents and might lower performance. We investigated the effects of previous positive handling and of gentle interactions during the procedure on behaviour and heart rate in dairy cows during rectal palpation with sham insemination. Twenty cows were allocated randomly into two groups of 10 animals: handling, received additional positive handling over a period of four weeks by one person (handler); control, only routine handling by different caretakers. The week after the handling period, tests lasting 9 min, including 4 min rectal palpation, were carried out with each animal on four successive days in four situations in a balanced order: cow is alone during the test, with the handler, with an usual caretaker, or with an unknown person. Behaviour and heart rate were recorded.Previously handled animals had lower heart rate during tests (P≤0.05, n=19), kicked less when alone (P≤0.05, n=19) and tended to show less restless behaviour (P≤0.1, n=19). Cows were further calmed by gentle interactions during the test, but people differed remarkably. Cows showed less restless behaviour when gentled by the handler, both in the 4 min of rectal palpation and in the 9 min test period (each: P≤0.001, n=19). No significant stress reducing effect was found for the other two persons. In conclusion, stress reactions of cows during rectal palpation/insemination can be reduced by previous positive handling as well as by a person providing positive, gentle interactions during the procedure. The results underline the importance of positive, gentle interactions with the animals to enhance animal welfare and reduce the risk of accidents. They also show that people differ in the success to calm down the animals in aversive situations and indicate the need to investigate the characteristics responsible for the differences and identify the preconditions for a stress reducing effect in future research.  相似文献

Oxidative stress has been recognized as a central feature of smoke induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant enzymes is also an established fact in these patients. But studies in regard to stable COPD patients and effect of vitamin E supplementation are lacking. Thirty patients with COPD were included in the study. Their baseline clinical examination, spirometry, plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), alpha-tocopherol and red blood cell superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were mea sured. Twenty healthy non-smokers who were matched for age and sex served as controls. All the above parameters were repeated after 12 weeks of supplementation with 400 IU of vitamin E daily. The mean malondialdehyde levels in the patients at baseline were higher than controls (5.91 +/- 1.23 nmol/ml vs 4.55 +/- 1.51 nmol/ml, P = 0 001), so also was plasma alpha-tocopherol levels (P < 0 001), while SOD levels were lower in the patients compared to controls (1692 +/- 259 units g/Hb vs 2451 +/- 131 units g/Hb, P < 0 001). Exogenous vitamin E (400 IU per day) supplementation did not bring about any significant change in plasma alpha-tocopherol and SOD levels. The Pearson s co-efficient of correlation between the levels of MDA, vitamin E, SOD; and spirometric measurements were not significant either on day 1 or after 12 weeks of vitamin E supplementation. The present study shows that initially the plasma lipid peroxide (MDA) levels are high and antioxidants (alpha-tocopherol and SOD) are low in patients with COPD. Exogenous supplementation with vitamin E does not have any significant effect on the spirometric measurements though it brings down the levels of MDA showing attenuation of further damage. However, inclusion of larger number of patients and supple mentation with vitamin E for longer periods may throw more light on free radical injury and protective effects of antioxidants.  相似文献

Oxidative stress occurs during maximal exercise, perhaps as a result of increased consumption of oxygen. Vitamins C and E can overcome the effects of antioxidants in exercise. We investigated the effects of supplementation with a combination of vitamin C and E (VCE) on blood lipid peroxidation (LP) and antioxidant levels following maximal training in basketball players. Blood samples were taken from 14 players (group A) and divided into two subgroups namely maximal training (group B) and maximal training plus VCE groups (group C). Group B maximally exercised for 35 days. VCE was supplemented to group C for 35 days and blood samples were taken from group B and C. Plasma and hemolyzed erythrocyte samples were obtained from the players. Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) activity and plasma vitamin E concentration were lower in group B than in group A, whereas plasma and erythrocyte LP levels were higher in group B than in group A. Plasma vitamin A, vitamin E, erythrocyte GSH‐Px, and reduced glutathione (GSH) values were higher in group C than in groups A and B although LP levels in plasma and erythrocytes were lower in group C than in group A and B. β‐Carotene values did not change in the three groups. In conclusion, VCE supplementation in maximal exercising basketball players may strengthen the antioxidant defense system by decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Vitamin E and heart disease: basic science to clinical intervention trials   总被引:19,自引:0,他引:19
A review is presented of studies on the effects of vitamin E on heart disease, studies encompassing basic science, animal studies, epidemiological and observational studies, and four intervention trials. The in vitro, cellular, and animal studies, which are impressive both in quantity and quality, leave no doubt that vitamin E, the most important fat-soluble antioxidant, protects animals against a variety of types of oxidative stress. The hypothesis that links vitamin E to the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) postulates that the oxidation of unsaturated lipids in the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle initiates a complex sequence of events that leads to the development of atherosclerotic plaque. This hypothesis is supported by numerous studies in vitro, in animals, and in humans. There is some evidence that the ex vivo oxidizability of a subject's LDL is predictive of future heart events. This background in basic science and observational studies, coupled with the safety of vitamin E, led to the initiation of clinical intervention trials. The three trials that have been reported in detail are, on balance, supportive of the proposal that supplemental vitamin E can reduce the risk for heart disease, and the fourth trial, which has just been reported, showed small, but not statistically significant, benefits. Subgroup analyses of cohorts from the older three trials, as well as evidence from smaller trials, indicate that vitamin E provides protection against a number of medical conditions, including some that are indicative of atherosclerosis (such as intermittent claudication). Vitamin E supplementation also produces an improvement in the immune system and protection against diseases other than cardiovascular disease (such as prostate cancer). Vitamin E at the supplemental levels being used in the current trials, 100 to 800 IU/d, is safe, and there is little likelihood that increased risk will be found for those taking supplements. About one half of American cardiologists take supplemental vitamin E, about the same number as take aspirin. In fact, one study suggests that aspirin plus vitamin E is more effective than aspirin alone. There are a substantial number of trials involving vitamin E that are in progress. However, it is possible, or even likely, that each condition for which vitamin E provides benefit will have a unique dose-effect curve. Furthermore, different antioxidants appear to act synergistically, so supplementation with vitamin E might be more effective if combined with other micronutrients. It will be extremely difficult to do trials that adequately probe the dose-effect curve for vitamin E for each condition that it might affect, or to do studies of all the possible combinations of other micronutrients that might act with vitamin E to improve its effectiveness. Therefore, the scientific community must recognize that there never will be a time when the science is "complete." At some point, the weight of the scientific evidence must be judged adequate; although some may regard it as early to that judgement now, clearly we are very close. In view of the very low risk of reasonable supplementation with vitamin E, and the difficulty in obtaining more than about 30 IU/day from a balanced diet, some supplementation appears prudent now.  相似文献

Chronic stress is associated with negative health outcomes and is linked with neuroendocrine changes, deleterious effects on innate and adaptive immunity, and central nervous system neuropathology. Although stress management is commonly advocated clinically, there is insufficient mechanistic understanding of how decreasing stress affects disease pathogenesis. Therefore, we have developed a "calm mouse model" with caging enhancements designed to reduce murine stress. Male BALB/c mice were divided into four groups: control (Cntl), standard caging; calm (Calm), large caging to reduce animal density, a cardboard nest box for shelter, paper nesting material to promote innate nesting behavior, and a polycarbonate tube to mimic tunneling; control exercise (Cntl Ex), standard caging with a running wheel, known to reduce stress; and calm exercise (Calm Ex), calm caging with a running wheel. Calm, Cntl Ex and Calm Ex animals exhibited significantly less corticosterone production than Cntl animals. We also observed changes in spleen mass, and in vitro splenocyte studies demonstrated that Calm Ex animals had innate and adaptive immune responses that were more sensitive to acute handling stress than those in Cntl. Calm animals gained greater body mass than Cntl, although they had similar food intake, and we also observed changes in body composition, using magnetic resonance imaging. Together, our results suggest that the Calm mouse model represents a promising approach to studying the biological effects of stress reduction in the context of health and in conjunction with existing disease models.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate the effects of fish oil and vitamin E on the antioxidant defense system in hypercholesterolemic rabbits. A high fat and cholesterol diet, with or without supplement by fish oil and/or a vitamin E supplement, was fed to rabbits for 6 weeks. Compared to the reference diet of regular laboratory rabbit chow, a high fat and cholesterol-enriched diet increased atheroma formation, plasma lipid and peroxide levels, decreased blood glutathione levels, and reduced plasma glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase activities. Fish oil supplementation significantly reduced atheroma and increased glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities and blood glutathione levels, but increased plasma lipid peroxide levels. Vitamin E supplementation of the fish oil diet enhanced the beneficial effects by increasing glutathione reductase activity and decreasing peroxide levels. These results indicate that a high fat and cholesterol diet attenuates blood glutathione levels and plasma antioxidant enzyme activities, which may account for some of its atherogenic properties. Consumption of fish oil enhances antioxidative defenses against the oxidative stress imposed by hypercholesterolemia, and vitamin E further enhances these beneficial effects.  相似文献

Aggression when pigs are mixed into new social groups has negative impacts on welfare and production. Aggressive behaviour is moderately heritable and could be reduced by genetic selection. The possible wider impacts of selection for reduced aggressiveness on handling traits and activity in the home pen were investigated using 1663 male and female pedigree pigs (898 purebred Yorkshire and 765 Yorkshire × Landrace). Aggressive behaviour was observed over 24 h after pigs were mixed at 10 weeks of age into groups balanced for unfamiliarity and weight. Aggression was highly heritable (duration of involvement in reciprocal fighting h2 = 0.47 ± 0.03, and duration of delivering one-sided aggression h2 = 0.34 ± 0.03). Three weeks after mixing, home pen inactivity (indicated by the frequency of lying) was observed over 24 h. Inactivity was weakly heritable (h2 = 0.05 ± 0.01) but showed no significant genetic association with aggression. Pigs' behaviour during handling by humans was assessed on entry to, whilst inside and on exit from a weigh crate at both mixing and end of test at 22 weeks. Pigs were generally easy to handle, moving easily into and out of the crate. Scores indicating 'very difficult to move' were rare. Handling scores at weighing were weakly heritable (h2 = 0.03 to 0.17), and moderately correlated across the two weighings (rg = 0.28 to 0.76). Aggressive behaviour at mixing was genetically associated with handling at the end of test weighing: pigs that fought and delivered one-sided aggression had handling scores indicating more active behaviour at weighing (e.g. moving quickly into the crate v. fighting rg = 0.41 ± 0.05 and v. bullying rg = 0.60 ± 0.04). Also, there was a genetic association between receiving one-side aggression at mixing and producing high-pitched vocalisations in the weigh crate (rg = 0.78 ± 0.08). Correlated behavioural responses occurring across different challenging situations (e.g. social mixing and human handling) have been described by the concept of animal temperament (also known as coping styles, personality or behavioural syndromes), but this has rarely been demonstrated at the genetic level in farm animals. These findings may have practical implications for the development of breeding programmes aimed at altering animal temperament. Breeding to reduce aggression could result in some reduction in activity at weighing. This would have consequences for animal production, because pigs which are inactive at weighing take longer to move into and out of the weigh crate, and perhaps also for animal welfare.  相似文献

Twelve clinically healthy subjects participated in a vitamin E supplementation study. Eight were given daily dosages of 150, 225, 800, or 1200 IU RRR-alpha-tocopherol for 21 days (two persons per dose) and four received placebo. Prior, during, and after the supplementation period, alpha-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol, and carotenoids were determined in plasma and low density lipoprotein (LDL). The maximum levels of alpha-tocopherol were 1.7- to 2.5-times the baseline values in plasma and 1.7- to 3.1-times in LDL. A high correlation existed between alpha-tocopherol in plasma and LDL. gamma-Tocopherol significantly decreased in plasma and LDL during vitamin E supplementation. No significant influence on the lipoprotein and lipid status and carotenoid levels of the participants occurred throughout the supplementation. The resistance of LDL against copper-mediated oxidation was also measured. The oxidation resistance of LDL was significantly higher during vitamin E supplementation. However, the efficacy of vitamin E in protecting LDL varied from person to person. The statistical evaluation of all data gave a correlation of r2 = 0.51 between alpha-tocopherol in LDL and the oxidation resistance as measured by the length of the lag-phase preceding the oxidation of LDL. No association was seen between levels of carotenoids and vitamin E in plasma and LDL. The present study clearly shows that in humans the oxidation resistance of LDL can be increased by vitamin E supplementation.  相似文献

In order to investigate the efficiency of a single selenium (Se) administration in restoring selenium status, Se and antioxidant enzymes were studied in an animal model of Se depletion. In Se-depleted animals receiving or not a single parenteral administration of Se, plasma, red blood cell (RBC), and tissue Se levels were measured concurrently with glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. The oxidative stress was assessed by thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARs), total thiol groups, glutathione, and tocopherol measurements. Our study showed that Se depletion with alterations in the antioxidant defense system (Se and GPx activity decreases) led to an increase of lipid peroxidation, a decrease of the plasma vitamin E level, and SOD activation. Sodium selenite injection resulted after 24 h in an optimal plasma Se level and a reactivation of GPx activity. In liver, brain, and kidney, Se levels in injected animals were higher than those in reference animals. However, this single administration of Se failed to decrease free radical damage induced by Se depletion. Therefore, in burned patients who exhibit an altered Se status despite a daily usually restricted Se supplementation, the early administration of a consistent Se amount to improve the GPx activity should be of great interest in preventing the impairment of the antioxidant status.  相似文献

Taurine bulls are highly susceptible to heat stress, leading to increased oxidative stress (OS) and impaired sperm viability. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) supplementation can be an alternative to improve semen quality, which also results in more sperm susceptibility to lipid peroxidation. Moreover, this deleterious effect can be exacerbated in animals affected by heat stress. Vitamin E is a key antioxidant that counteracts lipid peroxidation of sperm membrane caused by OS. Thus, combining PUFAs with vitamin E may improve sperm quality. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of interaction between PUFAs and vitamin E on sperm quality in Bos taurus bulls under testicular heat stress. Sixteen taurine bulls under testicular heat stress were randomly assigned in four groups: Control, Vitamin E, PUFA, and PUFA?+?Vitamin E. All groups lasted for 60 days. Samples were cryopreserved/thawed and analyzed for motility variables (CASA), membrane and acrosome integrity, mitochondrial activity, susceptibility to oxidative stress, DNA integrity, and sperm-binding capacity. Results showed that vitamin E had a beneficial effect on some sperm characteristics, whereas PUFA supplementation had an adverse effect when the two treatments were evaluated separately. Finally, the association between PUFAs and vitamin E did not improve sperm quality.  相似文献
