When mother-offspring couples of Phyllostomus discolor (lesser spear-nosed bat) are reunited after separation, an intensive exchange of infants' isolation calls and mothers' directive calls can be observed. The directive calls of each mother show a distinctive frequency-time structure, which appears to represent her individual vocal signature. During ontogenesis the isolation calls of the young change gradually, adapting increasingly to the mother's call type. A comparison of calls of separated pups at different ages with their mothers' directives demonstrated the individually distinct call characteristics of the mother also to be characteristic of the isolation calls of her young by about 50 days of age. This suggests that acoustic signals may be learned in Phyllostomus discolor.  相似文献

The social organization of the frugivorous bat, Carollia perspicillata, was studied by frequent visual censuses of a population in northwestern Costa Rica. A pattern of resource defense polygyny was found, based on male defense of roosting sites in caves and hollow trees. Protected roost sites were apparently limited. Harem compositions were relatively labile and female groups did not appear to be cooperative. Harem males were among the oldest and heaviest members of the population and these attributes were also correlated with the size of the harems they defended.  相似文献

The orientation behaviour of bats (Phyllostomus discolor, Phyllostomidae), flying inside an octagonal roost-like chamber (ø: 100cm; h: 150cm) was examined. It has been shown that the bats begin turning manoeuvres during flight by turning their head towards the direction they intend to proceed to. During early phases of the flights, cumulative navigation errors were evident, indicating that endogenous spatial information plays a major role in the orientation of the bats. During later phases of the flight this error is diminished again. So it can be concluded that the bats start to use exogenous spatial information for orientation while approaching the target. In order to investigate the relative importance of vision, echolocation and endogenous spatial information for approaching the roost, the landing lattices inside the test arena were changed for non-grid dummies. We found that: 1. combined visual and endogenous information are more important than echoacoustical cues, 2. the bats learned quickly to switch their orientation behaviour in order to get a better performance in avoiding the dummies, 3. the learning performance was influenced by the visual similarity of dummies and the real landing lattice.  相似文献

Matching Gas Exchange in the Bat from Flight to Torpor   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SYNOPSIS. Many microchiropteran bats can reduce their metabolicrate three orders of magnitude during heterothermic torpor. This extraordinary range provides a unique insight into theadaptability of mammalian ventilatory control and function. To enable powered flight, bats have developed the highest capacitygas exchange system among mammals. However, starving duringwinter may account for the greatest mortality among bats thathibernate, thus imposing a strong selective pressure to decreasemetabolic cost during torpor. This high capacity gas exchangesystem must therefore operate efficiently at very reduced rates, despite conflicting mechanical constraints imposed by an enormousfunctional overhead. The bat surmounts this dilemma by adjustingits control strategy to breathe intermittently during torpor. This allows instantaneous breathing rates and tidal volumesnear predicted optimal levels. In addition, a passive oxygeninflux coupled with a high acidotic tolerance facilitates longerintervals between the breathing bouts. The acidotic tolerancesupports the endurance of these apneas because the passive effluxof carbon dioxide does not match the rate of oxygen influx. The acidotic tolerance further helps by allowing carbon dioxideto enrich the alveolar gas during apnea to levels above thatof a nonacidotic, continuous pattern of breathing. Thus, thebat's carbon dioxide load can be cleared in fewer breaths whenbreathing resumes. By efficiently controlling a high capacitygas exchange system to meet the minuscule demands during torpor, the bat demonstrates how physiological control strategies canadapt to overcome limitations imposed by conflicting selectionpressures.  相似文献

Due to the scarcity of information about patterns of spermatogenesis in bats, this study aimed to provide information on the testicular activity of the bat Sturnira lilium along the annual seasons. Thus, a series of morphometrical and stereological analyses were made using the testes of adult S. lilium in order to achieve a better understanding of the sperm production dynamics. Light and transmission electron microscopy analyses were performed in testicular fragments of animals captured during dry and rainy seasons. The testes followed the pattern of organization described for other mammals, and there were no morphological differences between organs collected either in dry or in rainy seasons. Each tubular cross-section in stage 1 was made of 0.5 type-A spermatogonia, 4.4 primary spermatocytes in preleptotene/leptotene, 3.7 in zygotene, 11.9 in pachytene, 35.6 round spermatids and 8.5 Sertoli cells. The mitotic and meiotic indexes were 15.4 and 2.9 cells, respectively, while the spermatogenesis yield was 68.7 cells. The testicular sperm reserves was 37.61×106 cells, and daily sperm production per gram of testis averaged 209.68×106 cells, both highest averages occurring in the rainy season. S. lilium male bats have a continuous reproductive pattern, high spermatogenesis yield and low support capacity by the Sertoli cells.  相似文献

We described the plants used as roost resources by Artibeus watsoni in southwestern Costa Rica, assessed roost fidelity, and compared roosting ecology between two sites, Golfito and Corcovado, which vary in the degree of human influence. A total of 349 tents from 25 different plant species were used by A. watsoni as roosts; some plant species (e.g., Carludovica palmata, Asplundia alata, Heliconia imbricata and Calathea lutea) were modified into tents with significantly higher frequency than others. The highest tents above the ground were observed in Philodendron popenoei and Rhodospatha wendlandii, whereas tents in Philodendron grandipes and A. alata were significantly lower than any other species. Asplundia alata and R. wendlandii also had the highest frequency of leaves modified per plant. Fidelity of bats to tents was low, although bats used several tents intermittently within a restricted area. Males generally were more faithful to tents than females, although not significantly so. This observation, along with indirect evidence of leaf modification, suggests that males are primarily responsible for tent construction. The two study sites differed in the plants used for roosting and in tent fidelity. Bats in Corcovado used a greater variety of plant species for tent roosting, whereas bats in Golfito were more faithful, suggesting that roosting resources were scarcer at the latter site.  相似文献

I studied the reproduction of the 9 g nectarivorous bat Glossophaga commissarisi (Phyllostomidae: Glossophaginae) in relation to its food choice in a Costa Rican lowland rain forest over more than 2 yr. Reproduction was bimodal with birth peaks in April/May and October/November. The first birth peak coincided with a period of frugivory, whereas the second occurred during a period of almost exclusive nectarivory. All adult females recaptured in consecutive reproductive periods were reproductively active on both occasions, indicating that individual G. commissarisi females regularly reproduce twice per year at the study site. Throughout the annual cycle the mean testis length of the males correlated best with the proportion of females lactating, suggesting a post partum estrous pattern. Animals became reproductively active at about 1 yr of age. Fecal samples showed that females consumed significantly more insects than males.  相似文献

A cave bat community from a semiarid region in eastern Brazil was studied during the dry season. A high diversity was observed, with thirteen species recorded. Except for Micronycteris minuta and Lionycteris spurrelli, these bats were also found in other Brazilian karstic areas. The commonest species were the hematophague Desmodus rotundus, the omnivore Carollia perspicillata, and the insectivore Natalus stramineus. The bats formed itinerant colonies, moving frequently inside the cave. L. spurrelli was previously known from Amazonia, usually associated with evergreen forests. The present record extends its range 1600 km to the south. A disjunct distribution explains some morphological differentiation between Amazonia and Olhos d'Água cave populations. The latter may be a relict of former continuous forest vegetation, which has been fragmented after the climatic optimum. Dispersion through the Cerrado forest gallery is also possible.  相似文献

We studied the impact of road E461, Brno-Vienna, on bat mortality, with the goal to predict this impact after the road has been reconstructed and turned into highway, R52. In the Czech territory, two proposed road sections of E461 were selected, 3.5 and 4.5 km long, and divided into segments 100 m in length. Bat carcasses were picked up from emergency stopping lanes, and bat activity was recorded by ultrasound detectors along the road and 100 m away on both sides from the central strip. From May to October 2007, 25 checks of bat mortality performed at weekly intervals revealed 119 bat carcasses representing 11 or 12 species.Pipistrellus nathusii, P. pygmaeus andMyotis daubentonii were the most frequent traffic casualties. The greatest mortality was documented from early July to mid-October, with a peak in September. Monitoring bat activity by ultrasound detectors (one night per month in May, June and September) yielded 12 bat species and 3 species couples (Myotis mystacinus/brandtii, M. emarginatus/alcathoe, Plecotus auritus/austriacus), mostly the same taxa as found dead on the road. Significantly greater bat numbers were revealed in the section where the road was situated between two artificial lakes, as compared to a road section without any lakes directly adjacent to the road. In the former section, significant correlation was found between the number of carcasses found and the activity detected, according to road segments.  相似文献

The ventilatory and metabolic responses of lesser spear-nosed bats to hypoxia and hypercapnia were measured to determine whether these corresponded to preliminary allometries and a positive relationship between hypoxic ventilatory threshold andP 50. Ventilatory responses of lesser spear-nosed bats to 3, 5 and 7% CO2 differed significantly from ventilation on air and each other. The magnitude of their ventilatory response to CO2 is consistent with the prediction of a smaller ventilatory response to hypercapnia in small compared to large mammals [ ; Williams et al. (1994)]. Among 12, 10 and 8% O2 treatments only the ventilatory response to 8% O2 differed significantly from ventilation on air or the other treatments. Metabolic rate was significantly reduced at both 10 and 8% O2. The hypoxic ventilatory response of these bats does not support the prediction of a greater response in small compared to large mammals [ ; Boggs and Tenney (1984)]. Their metabolic response is consistent with the hypoxic hypometabolism typical of small mammals, though not of comparable magnitude. The response, expressed as percent change in convection requirement ( ), is also less than that observed in other small mammals. This relative insensitivity to hypoxia may be associated with this bat's unusually high affinity hemoglobin (P50=27.5 torr).  相似文献

A molecular phylogeny of the genus Artibeus using 19 of the 20 recognized species, many with samples from a broad geographic range, is presented. The analysis shows a clear distinction between the two subgenera (or genera), the 'large'Artibeus and the 'small'Dermanura, in both mitochondrial and nuclear genes. The placement and status of A. concolor remains inconclusive and is presented as the third subgenus Koopmania. The phylogenies and divergence time estimates show a marked influence of the Andes in the formation of the subgenera and the main lineages inside each subgenus. Nuclear genes showed a highly incomplete lineage sorting among species inside subgenera Artibeus and Dermanura. Indeed, shared alleles were also found between Artibeus and Koopmania, which are presumed to have split apart during the Miocene, showing that great care should be taken in using these markers. Cytochrome-b gene divergences and monophyly analyses suggest that A. lituratus and A. intermedius are indeed conspecifics. These analyses also suggested the existence of at least four 'new' species revealing a significant cryptic diversity inside the genus.  相似文献

The Choeroniscus genus (Glossophaginae, Phyllostomidae) has five monotypic species: C. minor, C. godmani, C. intermedius, C. inca and C. periosus. This paper analyses the karyotype of a female C. minor, collected close to the Guama river (Belém, Para, Brazil). G-, C-banding and NOR-staining were performed. This species has 2n = 20 chromosomes, where there are two bi-armed pairs (numbers 1 and 9) and seven subtelocentric pairs (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8). The probable X chromosome is a submetacentric. The constitutive heterochromatin can be found in the short arm of five subtelocentric pairs (4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) and is centromeric in the bi-armed pairs numbers 1 and 9, and the X chromosome. The heterochromatic bands are heteromorphic in three pairs (1, 2 and 3). Active NOR were observed in the short arms of eight subtelocentric chromosomes, suggesting that at least four pairs are nucleolar organizers. This paper describes for the first time the karyotype of C. minor from the Amazon region.  相似文献

Defence of females by dominant males of the Jamaican fruit‐eating bat Artibeus jamaicensis was observed in two natural colonies over 2 yr. A log‐linear model was used to evaluate the frequency distribution of visits to harems by sex, season and agonistic interaction of dominant males. Harem group size varied from four to 18 females, with one adult male in the small and medium‐sized groups and two males in the large groups (> 14 females). A highly significant interaction was noted between the age and sex of the visitor and the response of the dominant male. Male visitors were attacked more often than female and juvenile visitors. Aggressive defence increased during the reproductive seasons, with dominant males showing more agonistic responses towards male visitors. An increase in the frequency of visits by male visitors was noted in harem groups that ranged in size from four to 12 females, but the frequency of male visits declined in harem groups that contained more than 14 females.  相似文献

Nectar-feeding bats are the heaviest pollinators exploiting flowers in a hovering foraging mode. As hovering flight is considered to be energetically costly, clinging to flowers would be beneficial from an energetic perspective. I examined the rate of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide release during clinging flower visitation in two 10-g Glossophaga soricina (Glossophinae: Phyllostomidae) to evaluate the potential energetic benefit of clinging versus hovering. In addition, I measured the duration of flower visits of free-ranging glossophagine bats to Markea neurantha (Solanaceae), a bat-pollinated plant that allows both hovering and clinging flower visitation. After 20 s of clinging to an artificial respiratory mask, the bats respiratory exchange ratio did not significantly deviate from 1, indicating the combustion of sugar. The average oxygen uptake rate equaled 1.39 ml min–1 (±0.38 SD, STPD) and the carbon dioxide release rate equaled 1.33 ml min–1 (±0.20 SD, STPD) for feeder visits longer than 20 s (n=79). Converting the oxygen uptake rate into power input yielded 0.49 W, less than a third of the power requirements for hovering for a 10-g bat. Free-ranging 10-g glossophagine bats exploited flowers of M. neurantha for, on average, 0.32 s ( ±0.14 SD, n=273) during hovering and for 0.39 s (±0.18 SD, n=152) during clinging visitations. A comparison between the power requirements of flower exploitation in differently sized bats indicates that clinging would benefit larger nectar-feeding bats to a greater extent than smaller species.Communicated by G. Aerodynamic theory predicts that power output during flight should vary with body mass by an exponent of 1.56 when wing morphology remains constant (within an individual), and by an exponent of 1.19 when wing morphology changes with body mass (within a species or between species). I tested these predictions by estimating the power input during horizontal flight in three pregnant and two subadult Glossophaga soricina using a multivariate regression model. This analysis yielded power input during resting and flight as well as the energetic equivalent of change in body mass. A comparison of the estimated flight power for pregnant G. soricina, with published data on flight power of non-pregnant adults, revealed that energy turnover in flight is highest for pregnant G. soricina. Flight power of a 13-g pregnant G. soricina was even higher than that of a 16-g non-pregnant Glossophaga longirostris. A least-squares regression analysis yielded the following equations for the intraspecific scaling of flight power with body mass: power input during horizontal flight (P f )=24099 body mass (bm; kg)2.15 (r 2=0.97) for the intra-individual allometry (pregnancy) and P f =113 bm(kg)0.95 (r 2=0.99) for the inter-individual allometry (ontogeny). Both mass exponents are not significantly different from the predicted values for the scaling relationship of flight power within an individual (1.56) and within a species (1.19). This is the first measurement of power input during flight for subadult and pregnant bats. Accepted: 11 May 2000  相似文献

The neotropical vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) echolocate using ultrasonic pulses like those of the Latin American phyllostomatid bats. In this paper the orally produced echolocation sounds of Desmodus are analysed and the performance of the echolocation system is studied in two-choice training experiments on two vampire bats. Ability to detect objects is relatively limited; both animals were capable of discerning the presence of a 1 cm wide metal strip at a distance of 50 cm, but they failed with 0.5 cm wide strips. The ultrasonic pulses produced at a distance of 50 cm appear to sample an area with a diameter of 2.5 to 3.0 cm (i. e., the solid angle tested with each pulse is 3° to 3° 40′ in extent).  相似文献

We studied roost structure, modification, and availability in Lophostoma silvicolum (Phyllostomidae), an insectivorous gleaning bat, on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panamá. Collection of nest material beneath termitaria and infrared video filming indicated that males of L. silvicolum excavate and maintain cavities inside active termite nests. A binary logistic regression analysis showed that to be suitable as roosts, termite nests have to be larger than 30 cm in diameter and taller than 30 cm, well shaded, with few transecting branches, and freely accessible from below. Use of active termite nests as roosts may provide several benefits to L. silvicolum, including reduction of competition for roost sites with sympatric bat species, reduced parasite load and a suitable microclimate. A comparison of number of all termite nests in selected forest plots with number of termite nests that are potentially suited as bat roosts and number of termite nests that are actually used by bats suggests that L. silvicolum may not be roost‐limited on BCI in spite of its highly specialized roost choice.  相似文献

VON TEICHMAN, I., 1988. The development and structure of the seed-coat of Lannea discolor (Sonder) Engl. (Anacardiaceae). The bitegmic, anatropous ovule contains a group of nucellar cells with slightly thickened and intensively staining cell walls. Besides this hypostase sensu stricto, the nucellus cells in the chalaza become tanniniferous. This tanniniferous chalazal-nucellar tissue is intially plate-like. It is referred to as the hypostase sensu lato. The latter and the chalaza enlarge significantly. The raphe, extensive chalaza and well-developed cup-like hypostase sensu lato play an important role in the development of the seed-coat. The inner, tanniniferous epidermis of the inner integument persists in parts of the mature seed-coat. The outer, distinctly tanniniferous epidermis of the outer integument shows in the mature seed-coat a degree of secondary wall thickening. This undifferentiated type of seed-coat of L. discolor (tribe Spondieae) is remarkably similar to that of Camnosperma minor (tribe Rhoideae), both also showing tendency towards the exotestal type. In the Rhoideae the endotestal, i.e. differentiated type, of seed-coat is also present. The exalbuminous seed of L. discolor represents a derived and advanced type.  相似文献

Recent advances in studies of yeast, Drosophila and humans have renewed interest in heterochromatin. These recent studies have demonstrated the interspersion and rapid spread of transposable elements into Drosophila heterochromatin; documented the requirement of heterochromatic genes for heterochromatin; identified heterochromatin-like regions in yeast chromosomes; confirmed an important role for satellite DNA in human centromere function; and suggested potential functions for heterochromatin-associated proteins.  相似文献
