Microbiological, biogeochemical, and isotope geochemical investigations of the upper sediments of the Vistula and Curonian lagoons, Baltic Sea, were carried out. High content of organic matter in the sediments was responsible for the high numbers (over 1010 cells cm?3) and activity of heterotrophic microorganisms. The calculated integral rates of dark CO2 assimilation for the upper 30 cm of the sediments varied 12.5 to 38.8 mmol m?2 day?1 and were somewhat higher in the Curonian Lagoon than in the Vistula Lagoon. Integral rates of sulfate reduction were higher in the more saline Vistula Lagoon. Rapid consumption of sulfates of the pore water resulted in intensified methanogenesis, with significantly higher rates detected in the silts of the Curonian Lagoon. High rates of methanogenesis in the Curonian Lagoon correlated with higher methane levels in its upper sediments and near-bottom water. The highest rates of methane oxidation were detected in the uppermost sediment horizons (oxidized or slightly reduced), which was an indication of the barrier role of aerobic methanotrophic bacteria. The calculated methane flows from the sediments into the water column were 0.45 and 0.007 mmol m?2 day?1 for the Vistula and Curonian Lagoons, respectively. Low methane flow from the sediments of the Curonian Lagoon resulted probably from the specific weather (wind) conditions during sampling. The near-stormy conditions in the Curonian Lagoon caused sediment detachment, resulting in methane release into the water column.  相似文献

Escapement success and migration patterns of silver eels Anguilla anguilla (L.) was studied by acoustic telemetry in three natural free‐flowing and one dammed river and in Curonian Lagoon in Lithuania. Mean downstream migration speed and escapement success were almost the same in the shorter 210 km dammed river (52%, 13.6 km/day) and the considerably longer 300–480 km free‐flowing rivers (53%, 10.7 km/day). Despite the similarity between migration speed in the Curonian Lagoon (14.6 km/day) to that in rivers, migration success was significantly higher (71%) in the Lagoon. Although a majority of silver eels in Lithuania start migrating downstream in spring, the peak of eel migration into the Baltic Sea was observed during late fall. Overall migration success in the rivers and the Lagoon was 35%. Relatively low escapement may have negative consequences on the success on eel stock restoration and must be addressed when strategically planning for the production of spawners.  相似文献

The restoration of the Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus in Lithuania started in 2011. Two rivers (Neris and ?ventoji) were chosen for reintroduction in the Nemunas river basin based on historical data and ecological conditions. Since 2011, more than 116 thousand of sturgeon juveniles have been stocked in Lithuania. In order to achieve successful population restoration, it is vital to evaluate the efficiency of performed artificial stocking. Analysis of post‐stocking survival, migration patterns, predation pressure, fisheries‐related mortality and possible aggregation zones are all important to understand the main threats and prepare possible mitigation measures necessary for population establishment during the initial phase of restoration. Therefore, conventional and radio tagging studies were performed during the initial restoration phase in Lithuania. Atlantic sturgeon downstream migration was divergent in summer and appeared to have no significant associations with fish size, river quality or hydrophysical parameters, but in autumn migration speed and even survival in small rivers seemed to depend on flow velocity and water discharge. The distribution of recaptured tagged juveniles coincided with dominant currents in the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea. Some tagged specimens migrated long distances, with two sturgeons from Lithuania being caught in Estonian and Finnish territorial waters at up to 800 km from their release site. Tag recapture analysis and mortality rate of tagged fish clearly indicate that annual fisheries‐related mortality exceeds the required threshold of 5% for population establishment. High survival in rivers indicates that the main threat for a successful sturgeon reintroduction program is commercial fishing in the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea coastal zone.  相似文献

Pikeperch and perch perform seasonal migrations between the Curonian Lagoon and the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. The Curonian Lagoon is a freshwater basin, while salinity in the coastal waters varies between of 4.9–6.8 psu. In the Curonian Lagoon water temperature is generally higher than in the coastal waters. Field studies of growth and condition characteristics of pikeperch and perch were carried out in these water bodies with the aim to estimate growth differences of the two fish species under different salinity and temperature conditions. Additionally, an experimental study of the impact of salinity on the growth of perch young-of-the-year (YOY) was performed to test the hypothesis that a brackish environment positively influences percids. Field observations revealed that body length, condition factor, fatness coefficient and fat content in muscles were significantly higher in individuals inhabiting the cooler, brackish waters of the Baltic Sea than in individuals inhabiting the Curonian Lagoon. A positive effect of low salinity on growth was also established in the experimental study. Hence, the study results suggest that under certain temperature conditions, brackish waters beneficially affect the growth of pikeperch and perch.  相似文献

In the Vistula and Curonian lagoons, respectively, 7 and 9 taxa of under-ice zooplankton have been recorded. Copepoda and rotifera were dominant. Throughout the year, the complex of dominant species was generally constant in the Vistula Lagoon and changed considerably in the Curonian Lagoon. The zooplankton accumulation was found in the surface layer in the Curonian Lagoon, which was due to favorable oxygen conditions and phytoplankton accumulation under the ice.  相似文献

Hydraulic regime-based zonation scheme of the Curonian Lagoon   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The aim of this study was to delineate the spatial zonation of the Curonian Lagoon based on the hydraulic regime and the sediment characteristics. A finite element hydrodynamic model has been applied to the Curonian Lagoon to simulate the circulation patterns for three years. With the help of a transport diffusion model the salinity distribution and the residence times of the Curonian Lagoon have been investigated when forced by river runoff and by wind. The finite element method permitted to follow the details of bathymetry and morphology of the lagoon, describing the areas of special interest with higher resolution. The hydrodynamic model has been validated using in situ water level and salinity measurements. A statistical GIS analysis of the bottom sediment characteristics and the modeled residence times and salinity distribution led to a synthetic hydraulic regime-based zonation scheme. The derived classification scheme is of crucial value for understanding the renewal capacity and biota distribution patterns in the lagoon. Guest editors: A. Razinkovas, Z. R. Gasiūnaitė, J. M. Otolith Sr:Ca ratios were examined to evaluate the contribution of the stocked eel Anguilla anguilla elvers, which have been stocked in Lithuanian waters and mixed with naturally recruited eels for several decades, to the native eel population. Stocked eels were identified by the freshwater signature (Sr:Ca ratios <2·24 × 10−3) on the otolith after the glass eel stage. Naturally recruited eels, that had migrated through the North and Baltic Seas, were characterized by an extended seawater and brackish-water signature (Sr:Ca ratios >3·23 × 10−3) after the glass eel stage. Of 108 eels analysed, 21 eels had otolith Sr:Ca ratio profiles consistent with stocking while 87 showed patterns of natural recruitment. The ages of naturally recruited eels arriving in Lithuanian fresh waters varied from 1 to 10 years, with a mean ±  s.d . age of 5·2 ± 2·1 years. Eels from the inland Lake Baluošai were all freshwater residents of stocked origin. Stocked eels, however, accounted for only 20% of the eels from the Curonian Lagoon and 2% of eels sampled in Baltic coastal waters. This finding does not support the hypothesis that the eel fishery in the Curonian Lagoon depends mostly on stocking.  相似文献

Changes have been studied in space and time in the proportion of dead individuals in the zooplankton of the Curonian Lagoon. Dead individuals were found in the populations of all dominant invertebrate species. Their proportion was shown to increase during “hyperbloom” by a factor of 5 to 6. In the vegetation period without algal hyperbloom (2007), the dead individuals accounted on average for 1.9 ± 0.7% of the total abundance and 1.7 ± 0.8% of the total biomass of zooplankton; in the vegetation period with hyperbloom (2008), their proportion increased to 6.7 ± 3.0% and 5.9 ± 2.5%, respectively. Differences in sensitivity to bloom of Cianobacteria have been revealed in hydrobionts from different groups. Cladocera and nauplial Copepoda are the most sensitive groups; Cyclopoida is the least sensitive. The highest proportion of dead individuals was recorded in the most eutophicated and polluted part of the lagoon. It is suggested that parameters of zooplankton mortality be used for estimating the ecological state of the Curonian Lagoon.  相似文献

Skin neoplastic lesions have been studied in bream inhabiting the Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic Sea in 1999–2010. A total of 12163 fish specimens have been examined. Two types of lesions have been revealed: epidermal hyperplasia and skin papilloma, considered to be the successive stages of the epizootic cutaneous papillomatosis in fish. This disease has been registered in 18.5% of fish older than 5 years. The share of diseased specimens increases with age and reaches 62.5% in 15-year-old fish. The prevalence of lesions in males is significantly higher (12%) than in females (5.3%). The number of diseased fish in winter (30.2%) is higher than in summer (15.6%). The maximum share of fish with neoplasms has been recorded in 2006 (40%). Since 2007, there has been a trend towards a decrease in the prevalence of skin neoplastic lesions, and the average occurrence of diseased fish has reached 7.3%. The high prevalence of skin neoplasms (SNs) in bream is evidence of the unfavorable ecological situation in the Curonian Lagoon.  相似文献

Based on an analysis of long-term (1991–2007) hydrological and hydrochemical data, as well as data on phytoplankton primary production, the ecological state of the Curonian and Vistula Lagoons of the Baltic Sea is assessed. The main abiotic factors influencing the trophic status of the lagoons are indicated. Water temperature is the key factor determining phytoplankton production and abundance in the Curonian Lagoon. An intensive warming-up of the lagoon water in the 1990s and 2000s (a possible result of climate warming) combined with freshwater and a slow-flow velocity created the conditions for the mass development of bluegreen algae. Despite a significant reduction in the external nutrients load, the occurrences of water hyperblooms” become more frequent, which points to a continuation of the eutrophication processes in the lagoon. The biological productivity of the Vistula Lagoon is below the potentially possible level because hydrodynamic activity and brackish water prevent the intensive development of blue-green algae. The increase in water temperature in the 1990s and 2000s had no significant effect on the ecological state of the lagoon.  相似文献

The results of laboratory experiments on studying the characteristics of feeding of natural populations of Daphnia galeata from the freshwater Curonian Lagoon on cyanobacteria using the counting and radioisotope methods are discussed. The consumption and assimilation of the cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon flos-aquae by Daphnia have been revealed, as has the inhibition of feeding in Daphnia by species of the genus Microcystis. The results of PCR analysis of the total DNA of plankton from the Curonian Lagoon and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay have proved the ability of Microcystis populations to produce microcystins, while no genes involved in the synthesis of cyanotoxins have been found in A. flos-aquae.  相似文献

Conflict arises in fisheries worldwide when piscivorous birds target fish species of commercial value. This paper presents a method for estimating size selectivity functions for piscivores and uses it to compare predation selectivities of Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis L. 1758) with that of gill-net fishing on a European perch (Perca fluviatilis L. 1758) population in the Curonian Lagoon, Lithuania. Fishers often regard cormorants as an unwanted “satellite species”, but the degree of direct competition and overlap in size-specific selectivity between fishers and cormorants is unknown. This study showed negligible overlap in selectivity between Great Cormorants and legal-sized commercial nets. The selectivity estimation method has general application potential for use in conjunction with population dynamics models to assess fish population responses to size-selective fishing from a wide range of piscivorous predators.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of phyto- and zooplankton, as well as their trophic interactions, were studied for the shallow freshwater hypereutrophic Curonian Lagoon in the Baltic Sea in 2007–2009. The water temperature and high concentrations of nutrients were the limiting factors in the seasonal dynamics of the studied communities. Decreases in the B z /B ph ratio and the grazing pressure of phytophagous zooplankton were observed over the last few decades due to the eutrophication process and cyanobacteria blooms. The large zooplankton consumes a significant amount of primary production (Chlorococcales and Bacillariophyta) when the predator pressure of the fish fry is absent. This grazing pressure may precondition cyanobacteria scum.  相似文献

The status of twaite shad was investigated within the Southern Baltic Sea (ICES subdivision 22–27) and transitional area between the Baltic and North Seas (division IIIa). The following sources of data were analysed: (i) commercial catch statistics and relevant publications, (ii) records from ichthyological museum collections, (iii) records from recent commercial and recreational fisheries, (iv) research fisheries with trawls. A total of 476 records of twaite shad including more than 16 million individuals were obtained for the time between the years 1836 and 2005. About 72.9% of all records originated from commercial catch statistics and publications, whereas 18.9% were received from ichthyological collections. Research fisheries provided 6.3%, and 1.9% of the records were obtained from recent commercial and recreational fisheries. Most records of twaite shad were estimated for subdivisions 24 (45.2%) and 26 (35.5%). From 1836 to 1959, 29.6% of the records date from the period until 1899. 70.4% of the records of twaite shad originate from the twentieth century until 1959. The mean annual catch of twaite shad between 1891 and 1959 amounted to 86,674 kg within subdivisions 24–26 of the Southern Baltic Sea. Catch data show an approximately 20-year-cyclicity of maximum yields and minimum catches, respectively. The maximum annual yield of twaite shad in subdivisions 24–26 (474,700 kg) was registered in 1940, the minimum annual yield was estimated in 1958 (10 kg). In the 1950s, the annual catches of twaite shad declined sharply. Until 1960 twaite shad catches and records originated mainly from the Pommeranian Bay/Pommeranian Coast and adjacent waters including the Szczecin Lagoon (subdivision 24), the Bay of Gdańsk, Vistula Lagoon and Vistula Spit (subdivision 26) and from the Curonian Lagoon and Curonian Spit (subdivision 26). The highest catches of twaite shad originated from the area of Curonian Lagoon/Curonian Spit from 1941 to 1960. Seasonal catches of twaite shad showed maximum values from May to July. From 1960 to 1989, only four records of A. fallax were registered in the Southern Baltic Sea which originated from German coastal waters in subdivisions 22 and 24. A total of 107 records of twaite shad was obtained in subdivisions 20–27 from 1990 to 2005. Most of these recent records originate from a twaite-shad stock in subdivisions 24, 25 and 26. There are indications which suggest a separate stock of twaite shad in subdivisions 20 and 21. Disappearance and recovery of twaite shad stocks were probably caused by the following factors: construction of barriers in rivers with spawning sites of twaite shad; habitat destruction in those rivers as consequence of gravel extraction and reengineering scheme to improve navigation and for flood defence purposes, water pollution in the lagoons of the Southern Baltic and in their tributaries, commercial fishery in the Southern Baltic and climatic variation in the Baltic Sea basin south of the latitude of 60° N. The abundance and distribution of predatory cladoceran Leptodora kindtii was investigated in the estuarine lagoon (Curonian Lagoon, SE Baltic Sea). Three hydrodynamically different parts of the lagoon were selected, representing transitory oligohaline, intermediate freshwater and stagnant freshwater sites. L. kindtii was least abundant at the oligohaline site, never occurring at salinities greater than 4 psu. At the two freshwater sites, the abundance of L. kindtii varied from a low of <0.1 up to 2.2 indv. L−1 during peak abundance. Two peaks of L. kindtii abundance were observed with timing differences between stations: at the stagnant site the population of L. kindtii peaked two weeks earlier relative to the more hydrodynamically active sites, likely due to a 2°C higher May temperature. The small body size of L. kindtii in the lagoon (seasonal mean 2.68±0.6 mm) shows high fish predation pressure and predicts small cladocerans, juvenile copepods and rotifers being in the preferred prey size range. The calculated L. kindtii daily consumption during the population peak was as high as 100% of the daily zooplankton production, which implies high potential of this predator to shape the grazing zooplankton community in the lagoon.  相似文献

In animal societies with fission-fusion dynamics, demographic disturbances can influence the social and spatial structure of the population. Within the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida, common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have experienced recurrent unusual mortality events (UMEs) providing an opportunity to examine postdisturbance population and social cluster restructuring. This study investigates the impact of the potentially nonepizootic 2008 UME on the IRL dolphin population. Photo-identification surveys conducted from August 2006 to May 2010 were stratified into pre- (August 2006–April 2008) and post-UME (September 2008–May 2010) time periods. Social network and spatial (univariate kernel density) analyses were limited to individuals sighted 5+ times per period (pre-UME = 183, post-UME = 134), and indicated a change from 11 to ten social clusters, although individuals did not always reassociate with pre-UME cluster associates. Despite the social and spatial disconnect between IRL proper and Mosquito Lagoon clusters, both network density and core area spatial overlap increased post-UME allowing for increased intercluster interactions. However, intracluster associations increased as well, allowing the population to maintain multiple social clusters within a loosely connected network. This study shows the important role sociality may play in the adaptability of cetaceans to environmental and demographic changes.  相似文献

Of the only known two Lagoon populations of Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella) in the world, one is residing in the Chilika Lagoon in Orissa state, India. In addition to accidental deaths in gill net fishery and mechanized boat operations, there has been exploitation of the species for their oil. Extreme patchy distribution and vulnerability to becoming entangled in fishing gear has made it a focus of conservation concern. Information on genetic diversity of populations has considerable potential for informing conservation plans. The present paper reports the first genetic study of O. brevirostris from Chilika Lagoon based on mtDNA sequencing and PCR-based sex identification from 11 individuals. Control region sequence comparison showed two haplotypes and cytochrome b a single haplotype in the Chilika population of the species. Phylogenetic analysis indicated distinct clades within the Asian samples, with the Indian population showing closest genetic proximity to the haplotypes from Thailand. Sex of the animal was determined by PCR-based method. It is important to continue to examine the population discreteness and genetic variation of Irrawaddy dolphin in Chilika Lagoon vis-à-vis its global geographic distribution for formulating the conservation plans of the species.  相似文献

The patterns of the seasonal dynamics of species composition, abundance, biomass, and ration of zooplankton in the Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic Sea have been considered. It is shown that zooplankton can consume up to 17–21% of the phytoplankton primary production. Of this, 7–8% of the primary production is transformed into secondary production and can be used by invertebrates and fishes. The structural and functional characteristics of zooplankton (index and coefficient of the trophic state, the number of dominating species, and the Shannon index by biomass) can be used to assess the waterbody trophic state.  相似文献

The nature of the particulate organic matter (POM) as well as its temporal and spatial distribution and dynamics in the Curonian Lagoon (south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea) were investigated. The organic matter was characterized by the organic carbon and nitrogen content, δ13C and δ15N signatures as well as POC/Chl-a and C/N ratios. Additionally, data on hydrological, chemical and biological parameters were used for better understanding the POM distribution and dynamics. The sampling was performed at 13 stations in the Curonian Lagoon and its outflow in the Baltic Sea during the 2012–2013 period. Samples were also collected at the Nemunas River mouth in order to test the riverine impact. Obtained results showed that isotopic values of carbon and nitrogen ranged from −36.1‰ to −25.2‰ and from −0.9‰ to 15.5‰, respectively. The isotopic composition, together with the low C/N molar (∼7) and POC/Chl-a ratios (<100) of the POM, suggested the dominance of living phytoplankton in POM throughout the year with the higher input of detrital material (C/N >10, POC/Chl-a ratios >100) in late autumn − winter. The results of multivariate analysis evidenced a spatial distinction of POM distribution in the northern-transitional and central confined areas and allowed us to distinguish the main driving factors. The seasonal variation of the δ13C and δ15N values in POM (towards higher δ13C and lower δ15N values in the summer − early autumn period and lower δ13C and higher δ15N values in the late autumn − spring period) was determined by combination of factors such as availability of inorganic carbon and nitrogen, the riverine discharge, seasonal phytoplankton succession and by the short-term saline water intrusion to the northern-transitional part of the lagoon.  相似文献
