Five years' data on phenology of an Anthidium manicatum population in southern Germany and comparative observations on A. manicatum and A. florentinum from southern France are analysed. Males and females had the same flight season, adult sex ratio was strongly female biased and males were larger than females in both species. This is the opposite pattern to most other solitary bees, where females generally are larger than males, sex ratio is male-biased, males emerge before females and males disappear long before females. We argue that two features of Anthidium female behaviour, namely prolonged sexual receptivity and use of resources easily defendable by males, explain male adaptations in behaviour, phenology and body size and, hence, population sex ratio.  相似文献

Numerous studies have assessed the adaptive value of protandry for males in several insect species, considering that male emergence is determined by female availability. However, the possible advantage of the time of emergence for females on their mating success in protandrous insect species has only been explored theoretically. By studying the grasshopper Sphenarium purpurascens we evaluated the hypothesis that late emergence could be adaptive for females. If female maturation occurs when the population density is higher and the sex ratio (males/females) is biased to males, their probability of mating increases. Thus, in this study we estimated (1) the opportunity for mating in females as a function of their sexual maturation time, population density, and sex ratio at the moment they reached sexual maturity. In addition, (2) an analysis incorporating female body size and the total number of female matings was performed. Both analyses support the occurrence of protandry in the studied population. Under the first approach, females with intermediate maturation time had a higher probability of being mated than earlier and late matured females. Thus, it suggests that stabilising selection is acting on female maturation time and this may affect selection on male maturation time. Furthermore, the proportion of mated females increased when the sex ratio was biased to males, and stabilising selection on maturation time was detected also. However, the number of matings of a female depended on her body size. Females with larger body size had more matings than smaller ones at the beginning of the reproductive season. Because selection acts differently on maturation time in males and females of S. purpurascens this result is consistent with a condition for the maintenance of protandry in the population. The present results are discussed in the light of the models for the evolution of protandry.  相似文献

Across taxa, the presence of sexual ornaments in one sex isusually correlated with disproportionately great parental effortby the other. Frigatebirds (Fregatidae) are sexually dimorphic,with males exhibiting morphological and behavioral ornaments,but males and females share in all aspects of parental effort.All other taxa in a clade of 237 species exhibit biparentalcare, but only frigatebirds exhibit pronounced sexual dimorphism. We tested for the presence of two factors that could contributeto the evolution of male ornaments in great frigatebirds: ahigh frequency of extrapair fertilizations and a male-biasedoperational sex ratio. In 92 families sampled over two breedingseasons, there was only one extrapair fertilization. However,in both seasons, there were more males than females availablefor mating, and the sex ratio among individuals actively engagedin mate-acquisition behavior was strongly male biased, withtypically five or six males available per female. Our resultssuggest that extrapair fertilizations are not responsible forthe exaggeration of sexual ornaments in male frigatebirds,and that operational sex ratio may be related to sexual dimorphismin this species. Further work is needed to determine whetherthe male-biased operational sex ratio creates the variancein male reproductive success that would be needed to drivethe evolution of male ornaments.  相似文献

In order to estimate the three independent components of mating behaviour, sexual selection in females, sexual selection in males and mating pattern, we studied the distribution of shell colour morphs among mating pairs and between copulating and non-copulating snails in four subsamples of a natural population ofL. mariae. The colour of the shell, the sex and a qualitative estimate of age was recorded for every snail. We found sexual selection acting against one of the two commonest colours (yellow) among the young females. However, in males none of the eight shell colour morphs was favoured during matings. Male sexual choice or differences in female sexual activity may cause the sexual fitness disadvantage of yellow females. Moreover, individuals of different colour morphs did not mate at random, rather dissasortatively. A behavioural choice among shell colour morphs or a non-random microdistribution of the morphs may cause the departure from random mating in this population.  相似文献

Differential growth rate between males and females, owing to a sexual size dimorphism, has been proposed as a mechanism driving sex‐biased survival. How parents respond to this selection pressure through sex ratio manipulation and sex‐biased parental investment can have a dramatic influence on fitness. We determined how differential growth rates during early life resulting from sexual size dimorphism affected survival of young and how parents may respond in a precocial bird, the black brant Branta bernicla nigricans. We hypothesized that more rapidly growing male goslings would suffer greater mortality than females during brood rearing and that parents would respond to this by manipulating their primary sex ratio and parental investment. Male brant goslings suffered a 19.5% reduction in survival relative to female goslings and, based on simulation, we determined that a female biased population sex ratio at fledging was never overcome even though previous work demonstrated a slight male‐biased post‐fledging survival rate. Contrary to the Fisherian sex ratio adjustment hypothesis we found that individual adult female brant did not manipulate their primary sex ratio (50.39% male, n = 645), in response to the sex‐biased population level sex ratio. However, female condition at the start of the parental care period was a good predictor of their primary sex ratio. Finally, we examined how females changed their behavior in response to primary sex ratio of their broods. We hypothesized that parents would take male biased broods to areas with increased growth rates. Parents with male biased primary sex ratios took broods to areas with higher growth rates. These factors together suggest that sex‐biased growth rates during early life can dramatically affect population dynamics through sex‐biased survival and recruitment which in turn affects decisions parents make about sex allocation and sex‐biased parental investment in offspring to maximize fitness.  相似文献

Responses to sexually antagonistic selection are thought to be constrained by the shared genetic architecture of homologous male and female traits. Accordingly, adaptive sexual dimorphism depends on mechanisms such as genotype‐by‐sex interaction (G×S) and sex‐specific plasticity to alleviate this constraint. We tested these mechanisms in a population of Xiphophorus birchmanni (sheepshead swordtail), where the intensity of male competition is expected to mediate intersexual conflict over age and size at maturity. Combining quantitative genetics with density manipulations and analysis of sex ratio variation, we confirm that maturation traits are dimorphic and heritable, but also subject to large G×S. Although cross‐sex genetic correlations are close to zero, suggesting sex‐linked genes with important effects on growth and maturation are likely segregating in this population, we found less evidence of sex‐specific adaptive plasticity. At high density, there was a weak trend towards later and smaller maturation in both sexes. Effects of sex ratio were stronger and putatively adaptive in males but not in females. Males delay maturation in the presence of mature rivals, resulting in larger adult size with subsequent benefit to competitive ability. However, females also delay maturation in male‐biased groups, incurring a loss of reproductive lifespan without apparent benefit. Thus, in highly competitive environments, female fitness may be limited by the lack of sex‐specific plasticity. More generally, assuming that selection does act antagonistically on male and female maturation traits in the wild, our results demonstrate that genetic architecture of homologous traits can ease a major constraint on the evolution of adaptive dimorphism.  相似文献

In Uganda the butterfly, Acraea encedon (L.), occurs in well-defined populations that are largely genetically and ecologically isolated from each other. During the course of a large-scale capture-recapture programme about 18,000 different individuals were marked and released, and from these and many recaptures aspects of the population structure were investigated. Some populations are composed of almost all females while in other populations the sex ratio is normal. In the predominantly female populations many females remain unmated and produce infertile eggs, laying them on plants that are not foodplants and on each other. In such populations there is intense aggregating behaviour. Males live longer than females and each male may mate with several different females. There is evidence for the existence of a self-regulating mechanism in the predominantly female populations in which population size and male frequency are reciprocally dependent. Acraea encedon exists in a large variety of sympatric colour forms, the frequency of which varies from population to population. Some colour forms survive better than others. The hindwing of Acraea encedon has 20 black spots each of which can be absent in any particular butterfly. The relative frequency of missing spots varies from population to population. The ecological genetics of Acraea encedon is discussed in relation to theories of mimicry and polymorphism.  相似文献

The present study investigated the population structure of the snapping shrimp Alpheus brasileiro. We tested the hypotheses that the sex ratio of the population differs from the expected 1:1 and that the growth pattern differs between adults and juveniles and between sexes. Reproductive period, juvenile recruitment and morphological sexual maturity were estimated. Samples were collected in two periods. The first sampling occurred bimonthly from March 2013 to January 2014. The second sampling occurred monthly from April 2015 to March 2016. The population structure was determined based on the size-frequency distribution of different demographic categories. To analyse the relative growth, we measured the second pleuron length, major cheliped propodus length, major cheliped propodus width, major cheliped propodus height, appendix interna length, appendix masculina length. The results showed that the sex ratio did not differ from 1:1 (male:female). Reproduction and juvenile recruitment were continuous throughout the study period. The analysis of relative growth confirmed the hypothesis that males and females, and juveniles and adults, have different growth patterns, indicating distinct strategies of energy allocation. The estimated carapace length at the onset of morphological sexual maturity was 4.9?mm in males and 4.7?mm in females. The results obtained in this study are probably related to the monogamous social behaviour of A. brasileiro. Monogamy can influence demographic parameters such as sex ratio and the size at which males and females reach morphological sexual maturity.  相似文献

Disruptive sexual selection on colour patterns has been suggested as a major cause of diversification in the cichlid species flock of Lake Victoria. In Neochromis omnicaeruleus, a colour and sex determination polymorphism is associated with a polymorphism in male and female mating preferences. Theoretical work on this incipient species complex found conditions for rapid sympatric speciation by selection on sex determination and sexual selection on male and female colour patterns, under restrictive assumptions. Here we test the biological plausibility of a key assumption of such models, namely, the existence of a male preference against a novel female colour morph before its appearance in the population. We show that most males in a population that lacks the colour polymorphism exhibit a strong mating preference against the novel female colour morph and that reinforcement is not a likely explanation for the origin of such male preferences. Our results show that a specific condition required for the combined action of selection on sex determination and sexual selection to drive sympatric speciation is biologically justified. Finally, we suggest that Lake Victoria cichlids might share an ancestral female recognition scheme, predisposing colour monomorphic populations/species to similar evolutionary pathways leading to divergence of colour morphs in sympatry.  相似文献

Summary In a sample of 240 juvenile field voles 8% of the males and 22% of the females reached sexual maturity within their natal home range. Among individuals retrapped as adults, 58% of males and 23% of females had dispersed, i.e. had moved more than one home range diameter. The mean distance moved for males (58.5 m) exceeded that for females (28.6 m). Male movement distances were negatively associated with total density, and with density of adult females, but not with male density. Female movements were not related to population density. There were no relation between sex ratio and distance moved. The distribution of distances moved for both males and females fit a geometrical distribution, suggesting the importance of competitive processes.  相似文献

The behavioural mechanisms and patterns of protandrous sex change in bluebanded gobies Lythrypnus dalli were investigated and compared to the well-described behaviour patterns of protogynous sex change. To do this, unisex groups of males and females were established; behavioural and anatomical changes were recorded over a 42 day period as social status and sexual phenotype were determined. In all cases, social status, rather than the expression of a particular behaviour, accurately predicted final sexual phenotype. Rates of submissive behaviour, but not aggressive behaviour, were predictive of each discrete status class. Multiple individuals changed sex simultaneously if their sexual phenotype and social status were discordant, a novel finding suggesting that once a social hierarchy is established, individuals determined their sexual phenotype, regardless of initial sex, based on a simple operational principle: if subordinate express female, if dominant or not subordinate express male. This work demonstrates that similar mechanisms underlie sex change in both directions in L. dalli and potentially other sex changing species.  相似文献

While male mate choice behaviour has been reported in many taxa, little is known about its plasticity and evolutionary consequences. In the damselfly Ischnura senegalensis, females exhibit colour dimorphism (gynomorph and andromorph). The body colour of gynomorphs changed ontogenetically in accordance with sexual maturation, while little change occurred in andromorphs. To test the male mate choice between sexually immature and mature females of both morphs, binary choice experiments were conducted. Virgin males that were reared separately from females after emergence did not show significant preference between sexually immature and mature females for both morphs, indicating that virgin males were unable to discriminate female reproductive status. On the other hand, males that had experienced copulation with gynomorphs preferred sexually mature gynomorphs to sexually immature ones. However, males that had experienced copulation with andromorphs could not discriminate between sexually immature and mature andromorphs, probably due to the absence of significant ontogenetic change in their thoracic colour. Therefore, female body colour is an important cue for males in discriminating between sexual maturation stages. Learned mate discrimination depending on copulation experience might help males to detect potential mates effectively and avoid sexually unreceptive immature female. We finally discuss the adaptive significance of the ontogenetic colour change in females.  相似文献

In sexually dimorphic mammals, high population density is commonly associated with increased mortality of males relative to females and with female-biased adult sex ratios. This paper investigates the consequences of these changes on the distribution of male breeding success, the intensity of competition for females and the opportunity for sexual selection. After the red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) population of the North Block of Rum (Inner Hebrides) was released from culling, female numbers rose and male numbers declined, leading to an adult sex ratio of around one male to two females. This change was the result of increased mortality of males relative to females during the first two years of life; of increased emigration rates by young males; and of reduced immigration by males from outside the study area. The increasing bias in the adult sex ratio affected the timing of breeding as well as the distribution of mating success in males. As the adult sex ratio became increasingly biased towards females, the degree of skew in mating success (calculated across all harem-holders) increased, but mature males defended harems for shorter periods and a higher proportion of males held harems. In addition, a higher proportion of calves were fathered by immigrant males and the proportion fathered by males born in the study area declined. These results support the contention that, where high population density is associated with a female-biased adult sex ratio, competition for mates is likely to decline.  相似文献

Demographic parameters including operational sex ratio (OSR) and population density may influence the opportunity for, and strength of sexual selection. Traditionally, male-biased OSRs and high population densities have been thought to increase the opportunity for sexual selection on male sexual traits due to increased male competition for mates. Recent experimental evidence, however, suggests that male-biased OSRs might reduce the opportunity for sexual selection due to increased sexual coercion experienced by females. How OSR, density, and any resultant changes in the opportunity for sexual selection actually affect selection on male sexual traits is unclear. In this study, we independently manipulated OSR and density in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) without altering the number of males present. We recorded male and female behavior and used DNA microsatellite data to assign paternity to offspring and estimate male reproductive success. We then used linear selection analyses to examine the effects of OSR and density on directional sexual selection on male behavioral and morphological traits. We found that females were pursued more by males in male-biased treatments, despite no change in individual male behavior. There were no differences in sexual behavior experienced by females or performed by males in relation to density. Neither OSR nor density significantly altered the opportunity for sexual selection. Also, Although there was significant multivariate linear selection operating on males, neither OSR nor density altered the pattern of sexual selection on male traits. Our results suggest that differences in either OSR or density (independent of the number of males present) are unlikely to alter directional evolutionary change in male sexual traits.  相似文献

In this study I examined the relationship among abundance ofreproductive resources, population density, and adult sex ratioin the strawberry dart-poison frog, Dendrobates pumilio, andhow these variables in turn influence the mating system, malereproductive success, and sexual selection. I studied the matingbehavior in two populations of D. pumilio living in a primaryand secondary rainforest on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica.The abundance of tadpole-rearing sites (reproductive resourcesfor females) was approximately 10-fold higher in the secondary forest. Accordingly, the population density was higher and theadult sex ratio was strongly female biased in the secondaryforest, whereas the adult sex ratio was even in the primaryforest. The female-biased sex ratio was associated with a higherlevel of polygyny and higher male mating and reproductive successin the secondary forest. In contrast, the level of polyandrydid not differ between habitats. As expected, the opportunityfor sexual selection on male mating success was lower in thesecondary forest, the habitat with high female density. Inconclusion, my results suggest that ecological variables suchas resource availability have a great impact on the matingsystem and sexual selection through their effect on population structure. Moreover, the results of this study give furtherevidence that the opportunity for sexual selection is influencedby the adult sex ratio and hence by the operational sex ratioin a population.  相似文献

In male and female rats the endogenous steroid and gonadotrophin secretion was inhibited by injecting high doses of chlormadinone acetate (CmAc) from day 14 to 24 of life, i. e. during the period of brain maturation. In adulthood the males treated prepubertally with CmAc exhibited reduced sexual activity and fertility, whereas the females did not differ from the controls. More complete sex hormone deficiency during brain maturation was achieved by castration on day 14 of life. Controls were castrated at normal puberty time (40--60 days). Both groups were then substituted with androgens or oestrogens. In the females castrated on day 14 no impairment of sexual behaviour was observed as compared to the later castrated controls. In contrast, the early castrated males showed delayed onset of mounting behaviour. At autopsy, the weights of their sex organs were found to be lower than in the controls despite equal testosterone replacement for several months. These findings speak in favour of a permanently diminished responsiveness to androgens in males having been exposed to more or less severe androgen deficiency during sex specific brain maturation. Hence, the maturation of a male hypothalamus as well as the differentiation appears to depend at least in part on the presence of androgens, whereas in females it runs without hormonal influence.  相似文献

Operational sex ratio (OSR), the ratio of sexually active males to fertilizable females in a population, plays a central role in the theory of mating systems by predicting that the intensity of male–male competition and the degree of sexual selection increases as the OSR becomes increasingly male biased. At high values of OSR, however, resource defence theory predicts the breakdown of territoriality and a shift towards scramble competition with a decrease in sexual selection. The direction that correlations between OSR and resource competition and variance in mating success will take depends on the biology of the species of interest. We investigated the effects of male population density and male‐biased operational sex ratio on male mating tactics shown by a freshwater fish, the European bitterling, Rhodeus sericeus . This species spawns inside living unioneid mussels. Large males defended territories, were aggressive towards conspecifics under equal sex ratios and monopolized pair spawnings with females. The mating tactic, however, changed at high male density where large males ceased to be territorial and instead competed with groups of smaller males to release sperm when females spawned. This change in male behaviour from pair to group spawning has two ramifications for sexual selection. The intensity of sexual selection and variance in male mating success decrease, and the form of sexual competition changes from resource‐ to sperm competition. Thus, the use of alternative mating tactics renders the OSR unable to predict the direction of resource competition and variance in male mating success at high densities.  相似文献

Conflicts of interests between males and females over reproduction is a universal feature of sexually reproducing organisms and has driven the evolution of intersexual mimicry, mating behaviours and reproductive polymorphisms. Here, we show how temperature drives pre‐reproductive selection in a female colour polymorphic insect that is subject to strong sexual conflict. These species have three female colour morphs, one of which is a male mimic. This polymorphism is maintained by frequency‐dependent sexual conflict caused by male mating harassment. The frequency of female morphs varies geographically, with higher frequency of the male mimic at higher latitudes. We show that differential temperature sensitivity of the female morphs and faster sexual maturation of the male mimic increases the frequency of this morph in the north. These results suggest that sexual conflict during the adult stage is shaped by abiotic factors and frequency‐independent pre‐reproductive selection that operate earlier during ontogeny of these female morphs.  相似文献

Colour polymorphisms can be maintained in a population if all morphs have equal fitness on average, if fitness is frequency dependent or if fitness functions cross for some environmental or social variable. We studied female-limited colour polymorphism in the Rambur's forktail damselfly, Ischnura ramburi, in which one female morph looks like the male. The most commonly cited hypotheses to explain this polymorphism involve an advantage to andromorphs of avoiding costly matings through male mimicry. An alternative hypothesis argues that males learn the most common morph and that the polymorphism is maintained by a rare-morph advantage of mating avoidance, irrespective of male mimicry. We tested predictions of the male mimicry hypothesis, learned mate recognition hypothesis (LMR) and two new hypotheses. We used censuses and a mark-resight study to estimate density, sex ratio, morph frequency and mating frequencies. We observed interactions to test for male mimicry and female competition and to evaluate the frequency of mating attempts. Andromorphs were less likely than gynomorphs to receive mating attempts in encounters with males, but did not mate less frequently, or attack males or interrupt oviposition by other females more frequently. Contrary to the LMR hypothesis, the rarer morph was more likely to receive mating attempts. Andromorph frequency was greater in older females than in younger females, suggesting higher mortality or dispersal of gynomorphs. Our results support a modification of the male mimicry hypothesis, the signal detection hypothesis. Together with past studies, our results suggest that the female morphs may be alternative mating avoidance strategies.  相似文献
