During four cruises in continental shelf waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico in the winters of 1981–83, we performed quantitative studies on the grazing of the copepods Acartia tonsa, Centropages velificatus, and Eucalanus pileatus, on phytoplankton using natural particulate assemblages as food. Stations were in, or adjacent to the plume of the Mississippi River, thereby providing wide spectra of phytoplankton and suspended riverine particulate concentrations. Phytoplankton cell volume was converted to carbon, and this, coupled with carbon content measurements of these three copepod species, allowed comparisons of daily ingestion effort even though the copepods were of different sizes. Data were expressed in the same units (% of copepod body carbon ingested copepod –1 d–1) for each species. Over similar ranges of phytoplankton carbon concentrations (0.21–92.06 gCl–1), Acartia tonsa had higher carbon-specific ingestion rates (x = 22.31%, range = 0.08–152.37%) than C. velificatus (x = 2.8%, range = 0.00–31.09 %) or E. pileatus (x = 1.27%, range = 0.10–2.80%). Carbon-specific ingestion rates increased with increasing phytoplankton carbon concentration for A. tonsa (R2 = 0.81) and there was no evidence of saturated feeding on the carbon concentrations offered. A similar, but weaker trend was evident for E. pileatus (R2 = 0.71), but not C. velificatus (R2 = 0.49). Over a wide range of suspended particulate concentrations (10.6–95.2 mg l–1), there was no systematic effect of particulates on carbon-specific ingestion rate for any of the three copepod species. However, A. tonsa appeared more adept at grazing in highly turbid water than C. velificatus or E. pileatus.  相似文献

Growth rates of the entire phytoplankton community of a brackish lagoon in northeastern Japan were estimated by measuring increasing chlorophyll a content in dialysis bags during the summer and early autumn of 1986. The chlorophyll a contents of lagoon water fluctuated between 20 and 200 mg m–3. At lower densities of phytoplankton (20–50 mg chl. a m–3), growth rates (the rate of increase of chlorophyll a) exceeded 1 turnover per day, while at higher densities (more than 50 mg chl. a m–3), the growth rate decreased rapidly. Tidal exchanges of chlorophyll a showed net exports of chlorophyll a from the lagoon to adjacent waters. The exchange rate of chlorophyll a was estimated to be 0.65 d–1. At about 140 mg m–3 of chlorophyll a concentration, the increase of chlorophyll in the lagoon water compensated for tidal export. Only a small proportion of primary production was consumed by zooplankton in the lagoon. There were also net exports of ammonium and phosphate from the lagoon. Nutrient flux from sediment exceeded the phytoplankton requirement and was the major source of the ammonium and phosphate exports from the lagoon. The low inorganic N/P atom supply ratio in the lagoon suggests that nitrogen is a major nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

The carrageenan-producing red algaKappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty was brought to Vietnam from Japan in 1993. Branch fragments of this species were cultivated in a pond, lagoon, inlet and offshore in Vietnam for the first time. The best daily growth rate (DGR) of plants grown in the lagoon area attained 9–11 % day–1 in May to June (cold season). The water temperature and salinity in this area ranged from 27.2–32.4 °C and 31.4–33.7 °C, respectively. DGR of plants grown in the inlet ranged from 7 to 9% day–1 in June. Grazing by fish has been observed to occur in this area. The DGR of plants grown in the pond ranged from 5–6% in January–July, but decreased to less than 4% day–1 in August (hot season). K. alvarezii in Vietnam showed a carrageenan yield of 18.8–24.6% and gel strength of 1566–1712 g cm–2. These values are similar ones obtained fromK. alvarezii cultivated in the Philippines and Indonesia.  相似文献

Recently the gut fluorescence technique has been critisized because of the possible degradation of chlorophyll into nonfluorescent derivatives during passage through copepod guts and changes of the gut passage time with food concentration. Here pigment budgets have been calculated in 6 experiments with Calanus finmarchicus CIV caught 2 km offshore of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (the Barents Sea, Dalnije Zelentsi) in September 1992. Copepods were fed with culture of Platymonas viridis at different concentrations. Gut pigment and ingestion rate increased with food concentration in a similar way. On average between 78% and 89% of ingested chlorophyll was recovered in the guts and faecal pellets. No trend for a greater loss of fluorescence at low food concentration than at high was observed. Pigment content of faecal pellets incubated in filtered seawater decreased by 20–30% in the first 7–12 h and by up to 60% in 48 h. The decline of pigment content was accompanied by a rapid bacterial growth (by a factor of 3 in 48 h). Gut passage time increased with decreasing food concentration (from 40 min at 9 µg pigm l–1 to 64 min at 0.9 µg pigm l–1). These results together with some data by other authors suggest that the gut fluorescence method can be used to estimate in situ grazing rate providing gut passage time is measured properly and there are no losses of faecal material. However, careful consideration should be given to the previous feeding history of copepods.  相似文献

A microcosm experiment was conducted to assess the effects of salinity on coastal lagoon plankton assemblages. Five salinity levels were replicated four-fold in 3801 fiberglass tanks. Salinity levels used were 0, 8.5, 17, 34 and 51 ppt, or 0, 25, 50, 100 and 150 percent seawater. These were achieved by mixing concentrated lagoon water and tapwater in different proportions. Tanks were inoculated with plankton collected from San Dieguito Lagoon (Del Mar, San Diego County, California) and other fresh and saline waterbodies in the area. Selected physical-chemical variables, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and other invertebrate populations were monitored on five sampling dates over a 114 day period (13 August–5 December 1986).Total phytoplankton abundance increased with salinity, for salinities >17 ppt. Most taxa showed marked effects of salinity, though the pattern of the effects often varied greatly from date to date. Chlorophytes tended to be most abundant at 51 ppt. Pyrrhophytes were most abundant at 0 or 51 ppt, and least abundant at 8.5 or 17 ppt. Cryptophytes increased with increasing salinity. Euglenophytes exhibited no salinity effect on any date. Bacillariophytes were most abundant at 8.5–34 ppt and least abundant at 51 ppt, with individual taxa showing maxima at 0–17 ppt (Navicula, Synedra), 8.5–34 ppt (Surirella, Amphora), and 34 ppt (Cylindrotheca).Total zooplankton abundance decreased with salinity, for salinities > 17 ppt. The dominant taxa were protozoans, rotifers, cladocerans, and copepods, and all but the first group showed strong salinity effects. Protozoan abundance was unaffected by salinity. Rotifers were most abundant at 0 ppt (Keratella, Filinia) or 8.5 ppt (Brachionus). With few exceptions, cladocerans (Alona, Ceriodaphnia, Scapholeberis) were found only at 0 ppt. Abundance of calanoid copepods decreased with increasing salinity, with individual taxa showing maxima at 0 ppt (Diaptomus), 8.5–17 ppt (Pseudodiaptomus, Eurytemora), and 34 ppt (Acartia). Cyclopoid copepods were most abundant at 17 ppt, with individual taxa showing maxima at 0 ppt (Eucyclops), 8.5 ppt (Halicyclops), and 17 ppt (Oithona). Harpacticoid copepods (Cletocamptus, Tachidius) were most abundant at 17–34 ppt. Ostracods and mosquito (Culex) larvae were most abundant at 8.5 ppt and absent at 34 and 51 ppt. Polychaetes generally were most abundant at 17–34 ppt, and water boatmen (Trichocorixa) at 8.5–34 ppt. Various physical and chemical variables also showed significant variations with salinity. Tending to increase with salinity were temperature, ammonia and orthophosphate concentrations. Decreasing with salinity were pH, dissolved oxygen and silica concentrations. The causes and interrelationships of these salinity effects are discussed.  相似文献

Acartia spp. are the dominant copepod species in the Gironde estuary, seaward of the turbidity maximum area. Acartia bifilosa develop a large population in spring and early summer whereas Acartia tonsa appear in late summer. High values and high variability of chlorophyll a/suspended particulate matter ratio are found seaward of the turbidity maximum area. Feeding rates of A. bifilosa were measured by fluorometry. Phytoplankton ingestion was found to be highly variable, between 8 to 80% of copepod carbon body weight. Except for adult females, copepods were heavier in summer than in winter. PB ratios, estimated by the instantaneous growth rate method, varied from 0.03 d–1 to 0.14 d–1. The gut contents and P/B ratios of Acartia bifilosa were related to chl a/SPM ratio. From those data, and a few obtained for A. tonsa, it is concluded that only in summer months phytoplankton ingestion is enough to maintain secondary production.  相似文献

Seasonal variation in daily egg production rate of the planktonic calanoid copepod Acartia lilljeborgi Giesbrecht in relation to temperature, salinity and chlorophyll a concentration was studied in the Cananéia Lagoon estuarine system, from March 1995 to January 1996. Recently captured A. lilljeborgi adult females were individually incubated in bottles filled with surface water screened through a 40-m mesh, containing a natural assemblage of phytoplankton in the laboratory, at temperatures corresponding to ambient. Daily egg production rate ranged from 13.8±3.5 to 66.8± 15.1 eggs female–1 d–1 (mean ± 95% CL). The mean and maximum rates of daily egg production increased with temperature from 19.5 to 25.2 °C but then decreased with further increase in temperature at 28.4 through 29.1 °C, attaining the highest rates at approximately annual mean ambient water temperature (ca. 24–25 °C). The egg production rates increased linearly with chlorophyll a <40 m fraction. Hatching success varied from 68.6 to 91.9%. Cannibalism varied from 1.4±0.7 to 7.1±3.3 nauplii female–1 d–1 (mean ± 95% CL). These results suggest that water temperature and phytoplankton concentration are important factors affecting the egg production rate of A. lilljeborgi in the Cananéia Lagoon estuarine.  相似文献

The dinoflagellate, Pfiesteria piscicida, can form harmful algal blooms in estuarine environments. The dominant copepod species usually found in these waters is Acartia tonsa. We tested the ability of A. tonsa to graze the non-toxic zoospore stage of P. piscicida and thus serve as a potential biological control of blooms of this algal species. A. tonsa grazed the non-toxic zoospore stages of both a non-inducible P. piscicida strain (FDEPMDR23) and a potentially toxic strain (Tox-B101156) at approximately equal rates. Ingestion of P. piscicida increased with cell concentration and exhibited a saturated feeding response. Both the maximum number of cells ingested (Imax) and the slope of the ingestion curve (α) of A. tonsa feeding on P. piscicida were comparable to these ingestion parameters for A. tonsa fed similar-sized phytoplankton and protozoan species. When these laboratory ingestion rates were combined with abundance estimates of A. tonsa from the Pocomoke Estuary and Chesapeake Bay, we found that significant grazing control of the non-toxic zoospore stage of P. piscicida by A. tonsa would only occur at high copepod abundances (>10 copepods L−1). We conclude that under most in situ conditions the potential biological control of blooms of P. piscicida is exerted by microzooplankton grazers. However, in the less saline portions of estuaries where maximum concentrations of copepods often occur with low abundances of microzooplankton, copepod grazing coefficients can be similar to the growth rates of P. piscicida.  相似文献

The life cycle and annual production of Hydrobia acuta was studied in a hypersaline lagoon (s = 39 in summer), forming a part of solar salt works. Quantitative random samples were taken at regular intervals over a period of 15 months using a corer, and snails collected were counted and measured. Weight and biomass was calculated from a length-weight relationship and from measurements of ash content. H. acuta was a strictly annual species in the study lagoon. Recruitment takes place over a brief period in May and June, after which the breeding population dies. Growth of the new generation was slow during summer, probably due to the unfavourably high salinity. A period of rapid growth took place in autumn coinciding with a drop in salinity caused by rainfall. In winter Hydrobia hibernated by burrowing deeply into the sediment. Growth recommenced in spring when the lagoon was reflooded, but by this time the number of survivors was low.The maximum density of snails was 6 000 m–2 and maximum biomass 500 mg organic dry wt · m–2. Annual cohort production was estimated as 786 mg organic dry wt · m–2 · a–1. These figures are low compared to other studies on hydrobiid snails, and for production in inland waters, but the value for annual P/B = 4.5 is typical for a univoltine species. The relevance of the results to foraging by wading birds (the main consumers), is discussed.  相似文献

A long-term phytoplankton study was carried out in the Albufera of Valencia, a shallow hypertrophic lake (surface area 21 km2, mean depth 1 m, total inorganic nitrogen load 155 g m-2 y-1, total inorganic phosphate load 15 g m-2 y-1) from 1980 to 1988. The lake functions as a reservoir for the surrounding rice cultivation. From 1940's to 1988, its phytoplankton assemblage has been altered from a mesotrophic to a hypertrophic character, as consequence of the increasing pollution. For 1980–88, annual variations in the phytoplankton were less pronounced than seasonal changes. The hypertrophic and morphometric features of the lake favoured the stability of the phytoplankton assemblage and chlorophyll a levels during the study period. Seasonal and horizontal distribution of the total phytoplankton abundance and biomass were highly influenced by the hydrological cycle of the lagoon. Compared with other shallow nutrient rich lakes, the Albufera of Valencia is similar to the shallow hypertrophic lakes of the Netherlands.  相似文献

Carbon standing stocks and fluxes were studied in the lagoon of Tikehau atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia), from 1983 to 1988.The average POC concentration (0.7–2000 µm) was 203 mg C m–3. The suspended living carbon (31.6 mg C m–3) was made up of bacteria (53%), phytoplankton < 5 µm (14.2%), phytoplankton > 5 µm (14.2%), nanozooplankton 5–35 µm (5.7%), microzooplankton 35–200 µm (4.7%) and mesozooplankton 200–2000 µm (7.9%). The microphytobenthos biomass was 480 mg C m–2.Suspended detritus (84.4% of the total POC) did not originate from the reef flat but from lagoonal primary productions. Their sedimentation exceeded phytobenthos production. It was estimated that 50% of bacterial biomass was adsorbed on particles. the bacterial biomass dominance was explained by the utilisation of 1) DOC excreted by phytoplankton (44–175 mg C m–2 day –1) and zooplankton (50 mg Cm–2 day–1)2) organic compounds produced by solar-induced photochemical reactions 3) coral mucus.50% of the phytoplankton biomass belongs to the < 5 µm fraction. This production (440 mg C m–2 day–1) exceeded phytobenthos production (250 mg C m–2 day–1) when the whole lagoon was considered. The zooplankton > 35 µm ingested 315 mg C m–2 day–1, made up of phytoplankton, nanozooplankton and detritus. Its production was 132 mg C m–2 day–1.  相似文献

Physical, chemical and biological observations made in late July and August 1997 across the Azores Front (37° N, 32°W to 32° N, 29°W) are presented. The objectives of the study were: (1) to analyse horizontal and vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, density, nutrients and chlorophyll-a (Chl a) of the top 350 m; (2) to identify the main differences in the deep Chl a Maximum (DCM) and hydrographic structure between the water masses that pass north and south of the Azores Front; and (3) to estimate phytoplankton primary production in these water masses. Horizontal and vertical profiles of salinity, temperature, density, nutrients and phytoplankton pigments in the top 350 m were analysed. The Front separates two distinct water types: the 18°C Mode Water (18 MW) of sub-tropical origin, and the 15°C Mode Water (15 MW) of sub-polar origin. Differences in the DCM and hydrographic structure between 18 MW and 15 MW were observed in the contour plots of each section. The average Chl a concentration between 5 and 200 m depth decreased significantly from 15 MW to 18 MW. The same pattern was observed for the Chl a concentration at the DCM depth. A vertical one-dimensional model was used to estimate the phytoplankton primary production in the 15 MW and 18 MW and led to an estimated water column average gross primary productivity (GPP) between 1.08 and 2.71 mg C m–3 d–1 for the 15 MW and about half of these values for the 18 MW. These results indicate that the typical south–north positive slope on DCM depth parallels a latitudinal increase on GPP, suggesting that the location of the Azores Front may have a significant regional impact on GPP.  相似文献

There is continuous interest in many countries in maintaining and manipulating the rich ecological value of hypersaline ecosystems for aquaculture. The Megalon Embolon solar saltworks (northern Greece) were studied in sites of increasing salinity of 60–144 ppt to evaluate Dunaliella salina abundance and microalgal composition, in relation to physical and chemical parameters. Cluster and ordination analyses were performed based on the biotic and abiotic data matrices. Using fresh aliquots from 60 and 140 ppt salinity waters, phytoplankton performance was appraised with flask cultures in the laboratory by varying the inorganic PO4-P concentration at 23 °C and 30 °C. At the saltworks, among the most abundant microalgae identified were species of the genera Dunaliella, Chlamydomonas, Amphora, Navicula, and Nitzschia. Dunaliella salina populations were predominant comprising 5–22% of the total microalgal assemblages during spring, but only 0.3–1.0% during the summer, when grazing by Artemia parthenogenetica and Fabrea salina was intense. D. salina cell density in April–July was in the range of 0.4–12.5 × 106 L−1 with typical densities of 1.5–4.5 × 106 L−1. Overall, microalgal densities were high in salinities of ≥100 ppt when inorganic-P concentrations were ≥0.20 mg L−1 within saltworks waters. Multivariate analysis of species abundance showed that algal growth responses were primarily related to variation in salinity and inorganic-P concentrations, but also to NO3-N concentration. In the laboratory, experiments indicated effective fertilization and denser microalgal growth under high inorganic PO4-P applications (4.0 and 8.0 mg L−1) at 60 ppt salinity and 23 °C. The lower PO4-P applications (0.6–2.0 mg L−1) were more effective at 60 ppt salinity and 30 °C. At 140 ppt salinity, microalgal growth response was less obvious at any of the corresponding phosphorus concentrations or temperatures. In both salinity experiments, Dunaliella salina bloomed easily and was predominant among the microalgae. Our observations indicate that Dunaliella salina populations and the overall rich microalgal profile of the saltworks, along with their performance in laboratory mono–and mixed cultures hold promise for mass cultivation within the M. Embolon saltworks basins.  相似文献

Summary In the Weddell Sea, several biochemical and physiological characteristics of copepodite stage III to adult females of Calanus propinquus from the surface layer (0–100 m) and the deep layer (500–1,000 m) were compared at a time of high phytoplankton abundance (February) and a month later, when chlorophyll concentration was much lower and older copepodite stages had migrated to their overwintering depth. Daily rations of surface animals, estimated by the gut fluorescence method, varied from 0.8% to 7.8% body carbon (increasing with phytoplankton concentration). Respiration rate (calculated from measurements of electron-transport-system activity) and lipid and protein body content of animals inhabiting the surface layer decreased from February to April. Deep water animals (stage V and adult females) were characterized by high lipid and protein content; their respiration and excretion rates were much lower than in surface copepods. Our calculation showed that they could survive without an additional source of energy for 8–9 months. Based on our own and published data on bio-chemistry and physiology the possibility of a two-year life cycle is suggested.  相似文献

Ingestion, respiration and excretion rates as well as lipid and protein body content of the dominant Antarctic copepod Calanoides acutus (CIV to adult females) were studied during the period covering the end of phytoplankton bloom (February) to the beginning of transition to overwintering (March-April). Daily rations measured with gut fluorescence varied from 2.2 to 2.7% in surface C. acutus. Weight-specific respiration and excretion rates in deep C. acutus decreased by a factor of 11 and 3.5–3.8 compared to their surface counterparts. High lipid (up to 455 µg ind–1) and protein (198 µg ind–l) content was observed in surface C. acutus CV in February; a month later the animals with similar lipid and protein content were found in the depth (500–1000 m layer). Their lipid reserves were enough to overwinter and probably to ascend, molt and reproduce. At the same time some of the deep CVs had much lower protein and lipid content and could survive only for 4–5 months. Our own and literature data led to the conclusion that females of C. acutus reach adulthood at the age of more than one year while development of males could be completed in one year.  相似文献

The primary production of phytoplankton in Lake Vechten   总被引:6,自引:6,他引:0
The primary production of the phytoplankton of Lake Vechten (The Netherlands) (area, 4.7 ha; mean depth, 6 m), an unpolluted and stratified sandpit was investigated from 1969 to 1980 (except in 1971, 1975 and 1976) by the in situ 14C-technique. Other data collected include: solar radiation, transparency, oxygen and thermal structure. In winter and spring diatoms, Cryptophyceae and Chlorococcales were important algal groups, while in summer Dinophyceae and Chrysophyceae were important. The chlorophyll-a concentration was compared to the cellular biovolumes (= fresh weight) of the most abundant phytoplankton species. The primary production maxima occurred in winter, spring and during the summer stratification. The vertical profiles of photosynthesis exhibit light inhibition at surface to a maximum of 4 m. The maximum of zooplankton grazing in May–June caused a sharp decrease in the phytoplankton biomass and seston concentration accompanied by the highest transparency (clear water phase). The values for cellular C-fixation range from 10 to 1307 mg C · M–2 · day–1 (annual mean of 280 mg C · m–2 · day–1). High dark fixation (up to 100%) was encountered in the metalimnion and hypolimnion from July to October together with peaks of 14C-fixation due to a crowding of phytoplankton and phototrophic anoxic bacteria. Extracellular excretion by phytoplankton, investigated in 1977 to 1979, was 15% of the annual mean of the total C-fixation. The photosynthetic efficiency, turnover rates, and activity coefficients were low, particularly in the summer months when Ceratium hirundinella was predominant. The seasonal variations were controlled mainly by solar radiation and probably phosphate, the former being more important in the non-stratification period and the latter during the stratification period.  相似文献

The zooplankton community of the brackish part of the Westerschelde estuary (November 1989–October 1990) was dominated by two calanoid copepods, Eurytemora affinis and Acartia tonsa. Eurytemora was present during a longer period of the year and was much more important in terms of total abundances and biomasses than Acartia. The secondary production of these species was estimated by means of the growth rate method, using weight-specific growth rates obtained from laboratory cultures (Eurytemora) or from the literature (Acartia).Due to the substantially higher growth rates of Acartia compared to Eurytemora, total yearly productions of both communities were comparable, notwithstanding the large discrepancies in biomass. They amounted to about 5 and 6 g C m–2 y–1 by Acartia and Eurytemora respectively. The food needed to realise this production was estimated to be about 14 and 17 g C m–2 y–1 by Acartia and Eurytemora respectively. Provided that the copepods are able to selectively ingest the phytoplankton, in situ net production provides sufficient carbon for zooplankton demands for a short period of the year only. As phytoplankton standing stock is very low and net phytoplankton productivity is negative from late fall to early spring, nutritional demands of the copepods have to be fulfilled by other than algal food at least during this period of the year.Although the copepods in the brackish part can have an important impact on some food items, their contribution to total carbon fluxes in the brackish zone is negligible: each year some 6% of all consumed carbon in the brackish part of the estuary passes through the copepod food web.  相似文献

The phytoplankton in Thale Sap Songkhla was investigated at 2–3 month intervals from August 1991 to October 1993. The abundance of phytoplankton ranged from 1.4×106 to 1.3×109 cells m–3. A total of 6 divisions with 103 genera were identified as Bacillariophyta: 49 genera, Chlorophyta: 21 genera, Pyrrhophyta: 15 genera, Cyanophyta: 12 genera, Chrysophyta: 3 genera and Euglenophyta: 3 genera. Although phytoplankton abundance was distinctly greater in the first year of study (August 1991–June 1992) than in the second year (August 1992–October 1993), their patterns are similar: 2 peaks yearly. The peaks of phytoplankton occurred in the heavy rainy season (northeast monsoon) and the light rainy season (southwest monsoon). The main bloom was found during December–January, with a predominance of blue-green algae (e.g. Aphanizomenon andPhormidium) and green algae (e.g. Eudorina). Their species composition also increased, an effect of the large amount of rainfall resulting in low salinity during the northeast monsoon. The minor bloom was produced by diatoms during June–July when water salinity was moderate to seawater. Both phytoplankton numbers and species composition were high. However, unpredictably heavy rainfall during the southwest monsoon period may reduce diatom production due to rapid immediate replacement by blue-green species. Besides salinity concentration, a low total nitrogen: total phosphorus (TN: TP) ratio tended to support the growth of blue-green algae. The diversity of phytoplankton was lowest in the heavy rainy period.  相似文献

In the Berre lagoon, a large brackish and swallow area near Marseille, the environmental factors (temperature, salinity, oxygen, suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll) generally display strong space and time variations. The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and the copepod Acartia tonsa constitute the bulk of the zooplankton population during all the year. Their space and time distributions were studied in 23 stations distributed all over the lagoon, during four seasonal cruises (February, June, October, November), at surface and bottom layers. There is no marked difference in the horizontal and vertical distribution of the two species, (except in November when rotifers were prevailing in surface and copepods at depth) and in their time occurence. When the four series of data are pooled, correlation analysis show that A.tonsa is positively correlated with temperature, salinity and seston and negatively to oxygen and chlorophyll. B. plicatilis is positively correlated with temperature and seston, but also with chlorophyll, while salinity has a negative effect. The specific eggs number of both species is chlorophyll dependent. Considering seasonal cruises separately, some differences appear in the sense or the significance of these different correlations. The respective distribution of the two species is only partly dependent on the variation of the environmental factors: most of the variance remains unexplained, as indicated by the result of a stepwise multiple regression analysis using the most significant factors (temperature, salinity and oxygen explain 33 to 42% of the variance in Acartia, while temperature and salinity explain 27 to 28% of the variance in Brachionus). Thus, internal behavioral factors could also play a role in the distribution of organisms, particularly in some cases of aggregations of organisms observed during this study. As the two species occupied the same space habitat most of the year, they are potentially in competition for food. A way to optimize the food utilization could be the time separation of their feeding activity, nocturnal in Acartia and diurnal in Brachionus. Another way could be selective feeding upon food particles depending on their size (Brachionus being able to use finer particles than Acartia) or their quality (Brachionus being more herbivorous than Acartia) as demonstrated in some grazing experiments carried out in parallel.  相似文献

Long-term changes in the population of Eurytemora affinis were investigated during 15 years (1978–1992) at a fixed station in the Gironde estuary (South West France). Total numbers, sex-ratio, % ovigerous females, proportion of copepodites and clutch-size were taken into account and their long-term distribution was related to temperature, river flow, salinity, suspended matter and chlorophyll a concentrations after the seasonal effect was removed for all variables. There was a great decrease of the river flow during the period of investigation, due to a general deficit in pluviosity. On the contrary, the general trend for salinity was an increase from 1978 to 1992. The same pattern was observed for chlorophyll, indicating an intrusion of marine phytoplankton. Water temperature increased significantly during the study period, following the general increase in air temperature observed in the area. For the suspended particulate matter (SPM), an increase was observed between 1978 and 1981–1982, then a very sharp decrease occurred from 1984 onwards.Numbers of E. affinis were inversely correlated with temperature and salinity, and positively correlated with the river flow. E. affinis was negatively correlated with chlorophyll concentration because of the covariation with salinity. No clear long-term trend was observed for the sex-ratio. A significant correlation was found between females carrying egg-sacs and SPM concentration, probably due to a decrease of the predation pressure in very turbid waters. The percentages of copepodites tended to decrease with time and were inversely correlated with temperature. Clutch-size significantly decreased during the 15-year period. This trend was mainly explained by temperature and salinity. It is concluded that, in the absence of strong human alteration in the Gironde estuary the long-term distribution of zooplankton can be explained by the natural environmental variability. The dominant factors are the river flow which governs the movement of the populations along the estuary and the temperature which influences the reproductive processes. Any change in climate will have consequences on the pelagic community.  相似文献
