Seasonal variations of phyto-, bacterio- and colourless flagellate plankton were followed across a year in the large shallow Lake Balaton (Hungary). Yearly average chlorophyll-a concentration was 11 µg 1–1, while the corresponding values of bacterioplankton and heterotrophic nanoflagellate (HNF) plankton biomass (fresh weight) were 0.24 mg 1–1 and 0.35 mg 1–1, respectively. About half of planktonic primary production was channelled through bacterioplankton on the yearly basis. However, there was no significant correlation between phytoplankton biomass and bacterial abundance. Bacterial specific growth rates were in the range of 0.009 and 0.09 h–1, and ended to follow the seasonal changes in water temperature. In some periods of the year, predator-prey relationships between the HNF and bacterial abundance were obvious. The estimated HNF grazing on bacteria varied between 3% and 227% of the daily bacterial production. On an annual basis, 87% of bacterial cell production was grazed by HNF plankton. 相似文献

Phytoplankton numbers, biovolume, chlorophyll-a and various physico-chemical characteristics were followed at weekly intervals in Mondsee, Austria during the year 1982. Secchi-disk transparency varied from 10 m in winter to 2 m in September. Prior to the onset of stratification phosphate-phosphorus concentration was 4 µg 1–1 decreasing to undetectable values thereafter. Nitrate-nitrogen dropped from 590 µg 1–1 to about 100 µg 1–1 during the same time. The vernal bloom was dominated by Asterionella formosa Hass. which abruptly declined after silicon depletion. Spring growth ceased in early June, when Tabellaria flocculosa (Lyngb.) Kütz var. asterionelloides Grun. dominated.
Oscillatoria rubescens D.C. and Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. dominated summer and early autumn followed by the chrysophyte Dinobryon divergens Imh. and D. sociale Ehr. which formed up to 69% of total biovolume in October. Thereafter diatoms and Cryptophyceae (Rhodomonas lacustris Pascher and Ruttner, Cryptomonas pusilla Bach.) became abundant again.Maximum chlorophyll-a concentration in the epilimnion (16 µg 1–1) was reached during spring growth of the diatoms. During summer higher chlorophyll-a levels were always associated with the metalimnetic layer of Oscillatoria.Compared with earlier studies, both the total biovolume and the share of Oscillatoria rubescens significantly decreased because of reduced nutrient loading of the lake and wash-out of Oscillatoria (theor. renewal time of the lake: 1.7 years). 相似文献

A study was made of the mortality and aerobic decomposition of light- and phosphorus-limited cultures of Oscillatoria limnetica, a dominant phytoplankton species in shallow, eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands). When placed in the dark at 20 °C, most cells died and lysed within twelve days. The labile organic matter was completely decomposed within three weeks. Absorbance spectra indicated that blue green algae may contributed significantly to the refractory dissolved substances in the lake. Refractory particulate matter constituted from 7 to 24% of the biomass of O. limnetica, depending on the growth rate before incubation in the dark. The decomposition rate of this fraction was 0.005 d–1. On a basis of a steady-state model of the dynamics of phytoplankton detritus, the areal organic dry weight concentration of the detritus in the lake is ca. 60 g m–2. This means the quantities of detritus in the seston and epipelon are about equal. 相似文献

The role of storms in the summer succession of the phytoplankton community in a shallow lake (Lake Balaton, Hungary) 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The authors carried out day-to-day studies on the phytoplanktonof the largest shallow lake of Central Europe in the summerof 1976, 1977 and 1978. Data were analysed with diversity andcluster analyses. (i) Wind-induced stirring-up of the sedimentplays important role in the summer phytoplankton successionof the shallow lake. (ii) After storms algae with very smallcell sizes show synchronous development. In long calm periodsalgae with larger cell sizes exhibit organised population dynamics.(iii) In calm periods a shift from r-selection to predominantK-selection can be suspected. After the next storm importanceof r-selectionists again increases. (iv) Effect of changinggrowth- and loss rates on the population dynamics of the mostabundant species is discussed based on measured generation timesand calculated elimination. The phenomena discussed in the papercan appear to different extents in the summer phytoplanktonsuccession of other shallow, polimictic lakes. 相似文献

Coupling of phytoplankton and detritus in a shallow, eutrophic lake (Lake Loosdrecht,The Netherlands)
Herman J. Gons Tineke Burger-Wiersma Jerko H. Otten Machteld Rijkeboer 《Hydrobiologia》1992,233(1-3):51-59
An oscillating steady state is described of phytoplankton, dominated by Prochlorothrix hollandica and Oscillatoria limnetica, and sestonic detritus in shallow, eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands). A steady-state model for the coupling of the phytoplankton and detritus is discussed in relation to field and experimental data on phytoplankton growth and decomposition. According to model predictions, the phytoplankton to detritus ratio decreases hyperbolically at increasing phytoplankton growth rate and is independent of a lake's trophic state. The seston in L. Loosdrecht contains more detritus than phytoplankton as will apply to many other lakes. The model provides a basis for estimating the loss rate of the detritus, including decomposition, sedimentation and hydraulic loss. In a shallow lake like L. Loosdrecht detritus will continue to influence the water quality for years. 相似文献

1. Long-term records of air temperature and ice phenology (ice duration), and phyto- and zooplankton time series (1979–1997) were used to study the effects of ice duration on the successional pattern within plankton communities during spring in a shallow polymictic lake. 2. Water temperature in March was significantly lower after cold winters when compared to average or mild winters. Mean water temperature in April was not significantly different after mild, average or cold winters, but showed an overall significant negative correlation with ice duration. 3. Ice duration affected the timing and the magnitude of the peak abundance of diatoms, rotifers and daphnids during spring, but had no direct effects on the timing and maximum of chlorophytes, cryptophytes, cyanobacteria, bosminids and cyclopoid copepods. 4. Plankton groups which appeared first in the seasonal succession (i.e. diatoms, rotifers and daphnids) reached maximum abundance earlier after mild and average winters. The peak abundance of diatoms was negatively correlated with ice duration, whereas that of rotifers and daphnids was independent of the conditions during the preceding winter. 5. Temperature alone was generally a poor predictor of the timing and magnitude of both phyto- and zooplankton maxima. Turbulence may be important in the timing and the magnitude of peaks in diatoms, while total algal biomass was the most important determinant for the timing of the rotifer maximum. The magnitude of the daphnid maxima were significantly influenced by water temperature in March and April, and by rotifer abundance. The magnitude of the bosminid maximum was correlated with food availability and predation, whereas the timing of the maximum was more closely related to water temperature in May. 6. We conclude that, as a result of the low heat storage capacity of shallow lakes, the effects of winter on planktonic communities are short lived, and soon overtaken by the prevailing weather and by biotic interactions. 相似文献

A long-term phytoplankton study was carried out in the Albufera of Valencia, a shallow hypertrophic lake (surface area 21 km2, mean depth 1 m, total inorganic nitrogen load 155 g m-2 y-1, total inorganic phosphate load 15 g m-2 y-1) from 1980 to 1988. The lake functions as a reservoir for the surrounding rice cultivation. From 1940's to 1988, its phytoplankton assemblage has been altered from a mesotrophic to a hypertrophic character, as consequence of the increasing pollution. For 1980–88, annual variations in the phytoplankton were less pronounced than seasonal changes. The hypertrophic and morphometric features of the lake favoured the stability of the phytoplankton assemblage and chlorophyll a levels during the study period. Seasonal and horizontal distribution of the total phytoplankton abundance and biomass were highly influenced by the hydrological cycle of the lagoon. Compared with other shallow nutrient rich lakes, the Albufera of Valencia is similar to the shallow hypertrophic lakes of the Netherlands. 相似文献

Spatial and short-term changes in the composition and density of the macrobenthic fauna were studied in Lake Balaton, a large
shallow lake in Central Europe (Hungary). Spatial differences were examined along five transects and short-term changes at
two stations of different trophic state. The macrobenthos consisted almost exclusively of Tubificidae and Chironomidae of
the species Chironomus gr. plumosus, Procladius choreus, Tanypus punctipennis, Microchironomus tener and Cladotanytarsus sp.
The Oligochaeta biomass showed a significant short-term decrease from 1995 to 1998, and their average biomass proved to be
0.86 and 0.79 g WFW (wet formalin weight) m-2 in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Chironomidae showed significant spatial and
short-term differences following variations in primary production. Higher primary production resulted in higher biomass (up
to 153.4 g WFW m-2 and 9785 ind. m-2 in 1995) of Chironomus-Procladius community, while lower primary production resulted
in a very low biomass and abundance of the predatory Procladius-Tanypus-Microchironomus community (average: 3.16 g WFW m-2
and 1311 ind. m-2 in 1997). As compared to other lakes of similar climatic conditions, the total production of oligohaetes
and chironomids proved to be very low in 1996 and 1997 (49.2 and 54.1 KJ m-2 yr-1, respectively). The 90% of the average chironomid
production of Lake Balaton in 1996 and 1997 belonged to Ch. gr. plumosus (5.63 and 5.13 g m-2 yr-1), P. choreus (4.3 and 3.47
g m-2 yr-1) and T. punctipennis (0.27 and 2.21 g m-2 yr-1).

1. In natural lakes, modifications in the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton communities may ultimately be responses to changes in nutrient availability and climatic fluctuations. Phytoplankton and associated environmental factors were collected at monthly intervals from the beginning of the 1990s to 2007 in the large subalpine Lake Garda (zmax = 350 m, V = 49 × 109 m3). In this study period, the lake showed a slight and continuous increase of total phosphorus (TP) in the water column, up to concentrations of 18–20 μg P L?1. This increase represented the last stage of a long‐term process of enrichment documented since the 1970s, when concentrations of TP were below or around 10 μg P L?1. 2. At the community level, annual phytoplankton cycles underwent a unidirectional and slow shift mainly due to changes in the species more affected by the nutrient enrichment of the lake. After a first and long period of dominance by conjugatophytes (Mougeotia) and diatoms (Fragilaria), phytoplankton biomass in recent years was sustained by cyanobacteria (Planktothrix). Other important modifications in the development of phytoplankton were superimposed on this pattern due to the effects of annual climate fluctuations principally mediated by the deep mixing events at spring overturn and, secondarily, by temperature and thermal stability of the water column during the growing season. 3. Interannual variations in the stability and temperature of the water column appeared to influence the development of a few subdominant flagellates (dinophytes and cryptophytes). Nevertheless, the major impact of climate on phytoplankton was indirect, and mediated through the effects of winter climatic conditions on deep mixing dynamics. Winter climatic fluctuations proved to be a key element in a linked chain of causal factors including cooling of hypolimnetic waters, deep vertical mixing and epilimnetic nutrient replenishment. The process of fertilisation was measurable both for TP and dissolved inorganic nitrogen, although only the first had a large effect, reinforcing the seasonal growth of a few dominant groups. The degree of nutrient replenishment further increased the spring development of large diatoms and the increase of Planktothrix in summer and autumn. 4. Currently, changes in nutrient concentrations have the greatest effect on the phytoplankton community, while direct effects due to the interannual variations in the thermal regime are of secondary importance compared with the indirect effects mediated through deep water mixing and spring fertilisation. Overall, the results demonstrate that the consequences of climatic fluctuations and climate warming on phytoplankton communities need to be studied at different levels of complexity and integration, from the direct effects of temperature and thermal regime, to the indirect effects mediated by the physiographic characteristics of water bodies. 相似文献

Measurements at Lake, Calaita, a small mountain lake located at 1605 m. a.s .l. in a metamorphic catchment area in the south of the Trentino Region (Northern Italy), have revealed great seasonal variations in the chemical characteristics and phytoplankton community during the ice free period in 1992 and 1993. The acidity present in wet precipitations (H+, NH4+) was neutralised within the drainage basin by mineral dissolution which led to an increase of basic cations and alkalinity in the runoff. The dilution during periods of higher discharge, e.g. in spring and autumn, resulted in low values of alkalinity (up to 60 μeq 1−1), pH (mostly <6.7) and conductivity (<8 μS cm−1, 20°C). In summer, the decrease in runoff caused higher alkalinity (>10 μeq 1−1), pH (6.9–7.4) and conductivity values (up to 30 μS cm−1). The phytoplankton showed a major development in summer (with biovolume values of up to 7000 mm3 m−3), two different taxa being dominant in 1992 (Oocystis cf. lacustris) and 1993 (Synedra sp.). Unpredictable climatic conditions have a strong influence on the physical stability of the lake, which makes it more difficult to explain the evolution of the phytoplankton community as opposed to deeper lakes. 相似文献

Seasonal changes of phytoplankton were followed over 3 years (1985–87) in a shallow, unstratified and calcareous upland lake. The phytoplankton was of low to moderate abundance and generally dominated by phytoflagellates. Seasonality involved a winter minimum of abundance, a spring maximum of diatoms, and often brief increases in summer that included blue-greens, especially the colonial Gloeotrichia echinulata. Some components were of benthic origin. Seasonal growth of the main component of the phytobenthos, Chara globularisvar. virgata, caused a regular summer depletion in lake water of Ca2+ and HCO3
- (alkalinity) by associated CaCO3 deposition, and a more extreme (and unusual) depletion of K+. Chemical analysis of Chara biomass and of underlying sediments indicated a large benthic nutrient stock, much surpassing that represented by the phytoplankton. Growth in this biomass, and the magnitude of water-borne inputs, influenced the removals of Ca2+, K+ and inorganic N. The phytoplankton was probably limited by a low-P medium, to which co-precipitation of phosphate with CaCO3 may have contributed. A vernal depletion of Si was probably limiting to diatom growth, and appeared to be mainly induced by benthic rather than planktonic diatoms. Examples of long-term change in composition of the phytoplankton and phytobenthos are noted and discussed in relation to the interaction of these components, nutrient enrichment, and possible alternative stable states. 相似文献

1. Palaeolimnological data were used to investigate drivers of the community of primary producers in Lake Mattamuskeet, North Carolina, U.S.A. This is a large, shallow lake with two basins currently dominated by phytoplankton and macrophytes. The two basins were divided in 1940 by the building of a roadway across the lake, which also corresponded with the divergence in their ecosystem state. 2. Photosynthetic pigments, organic matter and nutrients (P, N, C, S) were analysed in sediment cores from each basin to reconstruct the primary producer community over the past c. 100 years. We sought to answer two questions. First, what changes to the ecosystem resulting from the building of the roadway caused the development of different primary producer communities in the two basins? Second, why have the alternative ecosystem states persisted despite a variety of human perturbations since 1940? 3. K‐means cluster analysis and principal component analysis were applied to identify three sediment types based on photosynthetic pigment data: sediments indicating low productivity (low pigment concentrations), sediments associated with macrophytes (chlorophyll a and b) and with phytoplankton (alloxanthin and aphanizophyll). In addition, other palaeolimnological proxies measured, such as loss on ignition, total phosphorus, total organic carbon/total nitrogen and other nutrients, were different in post‐1940 sediments within the two basins. 4. These differences suggest characteristics, such as nutrient cycling, water depth and other physical changes resulting from roadway construction, combined to establish and maintain the differing communities of primary producers in the two basins. Furthermore, Fe/S dynamics and waterfowl herbivory probably contributed to the development of the two ecosystem states. 相似文献

Classification of waters using biological quality elements and determination of the degree of deviation from reference levels is a key issue in the Water Framework Directive of EU. Lakes in reference conditions with sufficient biological data are available for several boreal lake types with the exception of naturally eutrophic lakes. An empirical approach is one alternative for estimating the reference conditions of such lakes. We used the water transparency of the naturally eutrophic Lake Tuusulanjärvi recorded in August in the early 1910s to estimate reference values for phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll a concentrations. Three phytoplankton samples during August 2000–2001 corresponded to the estimated reference values for total biomass (<5.6 mg l?1) and chlorophyll a (<28 μg l?1), as did the simultaneous Secchi depths. The phytoplankton assemblage in these samples with 24 eutrophy indicators (17% of the total taxa number) corresponded in general the species list from the early 1900s, which as such could be regarded as reference assemblage. Furthermore, in August 2000, 3 years after intensive fish removal a prominent decrease in cyanobacterial biomass and toxin concentration was observed. The costs of the measures and studies in Lake Tuusulanjärvi during 1989–2003 have been approximately 2.5 million euros. 相似文献

The species composition and phytoplankton biomass of Lake Awassa, Ethiopia were studied from September 1985 to July 1986 in relation to some limnological features of the lake. During the study period, three phases of thermal stratification were recognized: a period of unstable stratification and near-complete mixing was followed by a stable stratification period and another period of complete mixing. Complete mixing was associated with cooling of air temperature with an influx of cool rain and high rainfall. The underwater light penetration showed a similar pattern over the whole period with the highest in the red, and the lowest in the blue spectral region. Euphotic depth varied between 1.6 and 3.0 meters with the highest measurements corresponding to the stable stratification period. PO4-P concentrations ranged between 23 and 45 µg l–1 and NO3-N concentrations varied between 7 and 14 µg l–1 during the study period. Both nutrients showed increasing values associated with mixing periods and/or the rainy season.A total of 100 phytoplankton species were identified with 48% of the taxa represented by green algae, 30% by blue-green algae, 11% by diatoms, and the rest by chrysophytes, dinoflagellates, cryptomonads and euglenoids. The dominant phytoplankton species were Lyngbya nyassae, Botryococcus braunii and Microcystis species. Seasonal biomass variation was pronounced in the first two species but not in Mycrocystis. Phytoplankton biomass increased following the mixing period in December, and thermal destratification during May to July which was also a period with high rainfall and relatively high nutrient concentration. While the seasonal variation of the total phytoplankton community in Lake Awassa was relatively low (coefficient of variation < 20%), it was higher in some of the individual component species. 相似文献

Composition density and filtering rates of crustacean zooplankton were studied in the open water and among the macrophytes of the oligo-mesotrophic part of Lake Balaton from 1981 to 1983. From the individual filtering rates of the different populations and the densities community grazing rates were derived.Copepoda made up 79–90% of crustacean plankton community in the open lake and 95–97% of it in littoral zone. Among them the nauplii dominated. At the end of summer 1982, when Anabaenopsis was in bloom, the filter-feeding species (Eudiaptomus, Daphnia) practically disappeared, being replaced by cyclopoids.
Daphnia had the highest filtering rates followed by those of Eudiaptomus and Diaphanosoma. Among copepods, the filtering rates in decreasing order were: ovigerous > all adults > copepodites > nauplii. > . The filtering rates of the different species varied both seasonally as well as from year to year. In 1983, when the concentration of organic seston decreased, filtering rate increased compared with those in the earlier years. During the water bloom in 1982, the rates decreased by 70% on the average. The community grazing rate was very low (3% per day) in the open lake and among macrophytes, both in 1981 and 1982; also the share of crustacean zooplankton in grazing was very low. In 1983, together with the improving of water quality, the community grazing rate increased 4-fold. In 1981 and 1983 the rates were influenced by water temperature but in 1982 by seston concentration. 相似文献

Time series data of key environmental variables (water temperature, global radiation, vertical light attenuation, internal
P load) and biomass of four colour classes of photosynthetically active algae were collected during 2003 and 2004 with daily
resolution. Using these data, seasonal patterns of phytoplankton were analyzed as a function of the dynamic environment. Abstraction
of the environmental state as a point in multi-dimensional space was used to identify habitat templates of bloom-forming groups
and derive an indicator of environmental stability/physical disturbance. These templates were synthesized into a simple threshold
model that sufficiently simulated development and collapse of various blooms. Blooms were, however, rare events related to
specific environments with strong, unidirectional forcing. Tentative quantification of disturbance and compositional stability/community
change allowed discriminating disturbance-driven changes and autogenic succession with reasonable success. The two processes
were found to be equally important in shaping the composition and biomass of phytoplankton. 相似文献

The phytoplankton communities of eleven shallow lakes from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, were studied seasonally from 1987 to 1989. Several physical and chemical properties were measured in each lake (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, transparency, nutrients), in order to interpret the structural and dynamic traits of the phytoplankton community.Important differences between the lakes studied were put in evidence by means of multivariate techniques (Cluster Analysis and PCA). The shallow lakes densely populated by macrophytes hosted lowest phytoplanktonic densities, with average values ranging from 690 to 16500 algae ml–1. High species diversities were observed in these lakes (4.0–4.8). Lakes less colonized by macrophytes had higher phytoplankton densities. In some of them important blooms of Cyanophyceae were recorded, with between 60 000 and 179 000 algae ml–1, and concomitant low diversities. The results of this investigation support the hypothesis that the phytoplankton community is strongly influenced by the macrophytes, by direct competition and/or by competition from periphytic algae associated with higher plants. 相似文献

An attempt to trace eutrophication in a shallow lake (Balaton,Hungary) using chironomids 总被引:5,自引:6,他引:5
Lake Balaton, the largest shallow lake in Central Europe, is about 20 000 years old. An enormous increase in tourism and the disproportionate building development of the last few decades has resulted in the acceleration of eutrophication in the lake. Widespread research to reveal the causes of water-quality deterioration and possible ways of protection against it have recently started. The investigation of the larvae of non-biting midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) in the sediment of the open-water zone has also begun. The contemporary faunal composition strongly correlates with the trophic gradient along the longitudinal axis of the lake. We therefore supposed that the eutrophication process should be identifiable from the analysis of subfossil chironomid head capsules from the upper (15 cm thick) layer of the sediment. We found that quantitative results could only be obtained when fragments as well as relatively intact head capsules are considered. Our data verify that the originally oligo-mesotrophic community has been gradually replaced by eutrophic species in a west to east direction. Large-bodied larvae belonging to the Chironomus plumosus group mix the sediment down to 15 cm as they build their tubes and consequently alter the original proportions of head capsules at the different levels. So the sequence of communities through the sediment-layers is not quite reliable. 相似文献

Lake Baringo is a shallow equatorial lake. This paper reports a diel study of the depth-time distribution of phytoplankton
and photosynthesis at one location in Lake Baringo on 10 March 1989. The water column shows a pattern of diurnal stratification
probably accentuated by the high turbidity of the water and therefore rapid attenuation of solar energy. This stratified pattern
breaks down at night due to atmospheric cooling and the regular onset of winds in the early evening. The phytoplankton is
dominated byMicrocystis aeruginosa with some associated epiphytes. It concentrates in the narrow euphotic zone during the diurnal period of stratification due
to buoyancy of theMicrocystis; evening breakdown of the thermocline results in the phytoplankton being mixed throughout the water column. A series of measurements
of photosynthesis throughout the diurnal period gives an areal rate of 3.8 g O2 m−2 d−1. The relationship between this value and the level of fish exploitation in Lake Baringo is discussed. The diel cycle in Lake
Baringo is interpreted as dominating over any seasonal limnological cycle in the lake. 相似文献

The role of periphytes in the shift between macrophyte and phytoplankton dominated systems in a shallow, eutrophic lake (Lake Taihu, China) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Based on experiments of periphyte response to different trophic levels and their impact on macrophyte production, it was found
that the periphyte biomass increased with the nutrient concentrations. Increased trophic level and periphyte biomass resulted
in decreased macrophyte photosynthesis. It was suggested that the periphytes could cause resilience and hysteresis in the
system shifts between macrophyte and phytoplankton domination. Other factors, such as fish farming, storm induced waves and
mechanical destruction, and high water levels could be the perturbations during the system shifts, but these are not the key
factors. Instead, the nutrient loading and periphyte abundance could determine the shift in lake ecosystem between macrophyte
and phytoplankton domination. This finding could theoretically elucidate the mechanism of ecosystem shifts between macrophyte
and phytoplankton domination. 相似文献
