Lotus tenuis (Wadst. & Kit.) is a perennial legume widely grown for pasture in the flood-prone and salt affected Pampa region of Argentina. The physiology of salt and waterlogging tolerance in L. tenuis (four cultivars) was evaluated, and compared with Lotus corniculatus (three cultivars); the most widely cultivated Lotus species. Overall, L. tenuis cultivars accumulated less Na+ and Cl, and more K+ in shoots than L. corniculatus cultivars, when exposed to 200 mM NaCl for 28 days in aerated or in stagnant solutions. Root porosity was higher in L. tenuis cultivars due to greater aerenchyma formation. In a NaCl dose–response experiment (0–400 mM NaCl in aerated solution), L. tenuis (cv. Chaja) accumulated half as much Cl in its shoots than L. corniculatus (cv. San Gabriel) at all external NaCl concentrations, and about 30% less shoot Na+ in treatments above 250 mM NaCl. Ion distributions in shoots were determined for plants at 200 mM NaCl. L. tenuis (cv. Chaja) again accumulated about half as much Cl in old leaves, young leaves and stems, compared with concentrations in L. corniculatus (cv. San Gabriel). There were not, however, significant differences between the two species for Na+ concentrations in the various shoot tissues. The higher root porosity, and maintenance of lower shoot Cl and Na+ concentrations in L. tenuis, compared with L. corniculatus, contributes to the greater tolerance to combined salt and waterlogging stress in L. tenuis. Moreover, significant variation for tolerance to combined salinity and waterlogging stress was identified within both L. tenuis and L. corniculatus.  相似文献

Wetlands and riparian habitats in the western United States are being invaded by the exotic crucifer Lepidium latifolium (perennial pepperweed, tall whitetop). It was hypothesized that L. latifolium was an effective competitor due to its ability to make available and take up more nitrogen than vegetation it is replacing. The hypothesis was tested by comparing amidohydrolase activities, available soil N, 30 day aerobic N-mineralization rates, and plant uptake of N in paired L. latifolium invaded and non-invaded plots occupied by Elytrigia elongata (tall wheatgrass). Attributes were measured by date (June 1998, September 1998, April 1999, and May 2000) and by soil depth (0–15, 15–30, 30–50, and 50–86 cm). Lepidium latifolium invaded sites had significantly (p 0.05) greater urease, amidase, glutaminase, and asparaginase activities than sites occupied by E. elongata for most dates and soil depths. In addition, despite far greater uptake of N per unit area, L. latifolium sites still had significantly greater available N and N-mineralization potentials than E. elongata for most dates and depths. In general, enzyme activities significantly correlated with available soil N, with a stronger relationship for sites invaded by L. latifolium. There were few significant linear correlations of enzyme activities with net N mineralization potentials for L. latifolium sites, but many for sites occupied by E. elongata. Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) (Heteroptera: Miridae) is common in vegetable crops of the Mediterranean area, with an increasing worldwide range of geographical distribution. This omnivore is a reputed predator of small arthropod pests, but also produces injuries on vegetative and reproductive plant parts. The aim was to estimate density thresholds based on N. tenuis and whitefly abundance for the management of N. tenuis in tomato crops. The assay was carried out in mesh-walled and plastic greenhouses in southern Spain during 2004 and 2007. The natural population dynamics of N. tenuis and whitefly were monitored, and impact on yield quantified. The economic injury level and intervention threshold were predicted based on the zoophytophagous response of N. tenuis and the yield compensation of tomato plants. The proportion of aborted flowers on the tomato plants was related directly to the abundance of N. tenuis and inversely to the interaction between the number of N. tenuis and the number of whitefly immatures. Over-compensation of fruit weight was predicted for flower abortion rates due to N. tenuis lower than 0.171. No yield reduction is expected for values <0.65 N. tenuis per leaf, independent of the whitefly abundance, nor for up to 5 N. tenuis and >26 whitefly immatures per leaf. For intermediate N. tenuis levels, the outcome depends on the prey density. The probability of N. tenuis producing yield loss in tomato crops increases at N. tenuis:whitefly ratios >0.168. Yield reduction is expected after N. tenuis population peaks, when whitefly numbers have been reduced.  相似文献

The impact of forest clearance, and its replacement by Brachiaria pastures, on soil carbon reserves has been studied at many sites in the Brazilian Amazonia, but to date there appear to be no reports of similar studies undertaken in the Atlantic forest region of Brazil. In this study performed in the extreme south of Bahia, the changes in C and N content of the soil were evaluated from the time of establishment of grass-only B. humidicola and mixed B. humidicola/Desmodium ovalifolium pastures through 9 years of grazing in comparison with the C and N contents of the adjacent secondary forest. The decline in the content of soil C derived from the forest (C3) vegetation and the accumulation of that derived from the Brachiaria (C4) were followed by determining the 13C natural abundance of the soil organic matter (SOM). The pastures were established in 1987, 10 years after deforestation, and it was estimated that until 1994 there was a loss in forest-derived C in the top 30 cm of soil of approximately 20% (9.1 Mg C ha–1). After the establishment of the pastures, C derived from Brachiaria accumulated steadily such that at the final sampling (1997) it was estimated 13.9 Mg ha–1 was derived from this source under the grass-only pasture (0–30 cm). Samples taken from all pastures and the forest in 1997 to a depth of 100 cm showed that below 40 cm depth there was no significant contribution of the Brachiaria-derived C and that total C reserves under the grass/legume and the grass-only pastures were slightly higher than under the forest (not significant at P=0.05). The more detailed sampling under the pastures showed that to a depth of 30 cm there was significantly (P<0.05) more C under the mixed pasture than the grass-only pasture. It was estimated that from the time of establishment the apparent rate of C accumulation (0–100 cm depth) under the grass/legume pastures (1.17 Mg ha–1 yr–1) was almost double that under the grass-only pastures (0.66 Mg ha–1 yr–1). The data indicated that newly incorporated SOM derived from the Brachiaria had a considerably higher C:N ratio than that present under the forest.  相似文献

The effect of long-term (1983–1988) applications of crop residues (millet straw, 2–4 t ha-1 yr–1) and/or mineral fertilizer (30 kg N, 13 kg P and 25 kg K ha-1 yr-1) on uptake of phosphorus (P) and other nutrients, root growth and mycorrhizal colonization of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) was examined for two seasons (1987 and 1988) on an acid sandy soil in Niger. Treatments of the long-term field experiment were: control (–CR–F), mineral fertilizer only (–CR+F), crop residues only (+CR–F), and crop residues plus mineral fertilizer (+CR+F).In both years, total P uptake was similar for +CR–F and –CR+F treatments (1.6–3.5 kg P ha-1), although available soil P concentration (Bray I P) was considerably lower in +CR–F (3.2 mg P kg-1 soil) than in –CR+F (7.4) soil. In the treatments with mineral fertilizers (–CR+F; +CR+F), crop residues increased available soil P concentrations (Bray I P) from 7.4 to 8.9 mg kg-1 soil, while total P uptake increased from 3.6 to 10.6 kg P ha-1. In 1987 (with 450 mm of rainfall), leaf P concentrations of 30-day-old millet plants were in the deficiency range, but highest in the +CR+F treatment. In 1988 (699 mm), leaf P concentrations were distinctly higher, and again highest in the +CR+F treatment. In the treatments without crop residues (–CR–F; –CR+F), potassium (K) concentrations in the leaves indicated K deficiency, while application of crop residues (+CR–F; +CR+F) substantially raised leaf K concentrations and total K uptake. Leaf concentrations of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were hardly affected by the different treatments.In the topsoil (0–30 cm), root length density of millet plants was greater for +CR+F (6.5 cm cm-3) than for +CR–F (4.5 cm cm-3) and –CR+F (4.2 cm cm-3) treatments. Below 30 cm soil depth, root length density of all treatments declined rapidly from about 0.6 cm cm-3 (30–60 cm soil depth) to 0.2 cm cm-3 (120–180 cm soil depth). During the period of high uptake rates of P (42–80 DAP), root colonization with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi was low in 1987 (15–20%), but distinctly higher in 1988 (55–60%). Higher P uptake of +CR+F plants was related to a greater total root length in 0–30 cm and also to a higher P uptake rate per unit root length (P influx). Beneficial effects of crop residues on P uptake were primarily attributed to higher P mobility in the soil due to decreased concentrations of exchangeable Al, and enhancement of root growth. In contrast, the beneficial effect of crop residues on K uptake was caused by direct K supply with the millet straw.  相似文献

Summary The nitrogen fixation rate in a 4-year-old stand of the woody legumeLeucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. was estimated in the field at a rather dry site in Tanzania by use of an acetylene reduction technique. The diurnal mean value during April–May was 35 nmol C2H4 mg–1 (dry weight) nodules h–1, with a variation between 22±8 and 48±12 nmol C2H4 mg–1 (dry weight) nodules h–1 in early morning and at midday, respectively. The nodule biomass was determined by auger sampling to be 51±16 kg (dry weight) ha–1. Most of the nodules were found at the 10–30 cm soil depth level. A rough calculation of the amount of nitrogen fixed annually arrived at 110±30 kg ha–1. The results give strong support for the use ofL. leucocephala for soil enrichment in less humid areas of tropical Africa.  相似文献

Taxonomic analysis of a group of morphologically similar ponyfishes (Perciformes: Leiognathidae) establishes a complex comprising three valid species: Leiognathus aureus Abe and Haneda, 1972, widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean (Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and northern Australia); L. hataii Abe and Haneda, 1972, currently known only from Ambon, Indonesia; and L. panayensis sp. nov. Kimura and Dunlap, currently known only from Panay Island, the Philippines. The L. aureus complex can be defined by the following combination of characters: mouth protruding forward, not downward; small but sharp conical teeth uniserially on jaws; a black line between lower margin of eye and lower jaw articulation; and lateral line incomplete, ending below posterior part of dorsal fin base or on anterior caudal peduncle. Leiognathus hataii differs from both L. aureus and L. panayensis in having a large dark blotch below the spinous dorsal fin base and fewer counts of scales (lateral line scales 50–58 vs. 64–85 in the latter two species; scales above lateral line 7–10 vs. 12–18; scales below lateral line 22–26 vs. 30–41). Leiognathus panayensis is distinguished from L. aureus in having a deeper body (41–51% SL vs. 35–45% SL in the latter), long posterior limb of maxilla (21–25% HL vs. 15–23% HL), wholly scaled belly (vs. naked along preanal median keel), and a dark blotch on nape (vs. absent).  相似文献

Estimates of age and growth of flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Jenyns,1842) were made by analysing fish from commercial catches in Bahía Blanca estuary (39° LS). A total of 823 fish caught by fishing fleets operating in the estuary were collected between February 1997 and January 1998. Age was determined via scale reading and growth estimation parameters using von Bertalanffys equation. Annulus formation occurred in August. The age for the total population, which ranged from 7.7 to 87.5 cm TL was 0–7. Age ranged from 0 to 6 years (21.5–71.9 cm TL) in males and from 0 to 7 years (24.9–87.5 cm TL) in females. Length–weight relationships were W(g)=0.0093 L(cm) exp. 3.03 for the total population, W(g)=0.0147 L(cm) exp. 2.91 for females, and W(g)=0.0168 L(cm) exp. 2.87 for males, respectively. As from age three, females were longer and heavier than males. The growth parameters estimated for the total population, for females and for males were L=83.29, 79.66, and 46.11 cm, respectively; k values were 0.18, 0.23, and 0.92, respectively, and t0 values were –1.87; –1.54, and –0.62, respectively. Similarly to other flounders,P. orbignyanus is a typical inhabitant of estuaries and coastal regions. Adults stay in the study area mainly during spring and summer, they go outside or offshore during the spawning period and then they return to the estuary for feeding and recovering.  相似文献

The effect of tree row species on the distribution of soil inorganic N and the biomass growth and N uptake of trees and crops was investigated beneath a Grevillea robustaA. Cunn. ex R. Br. (grevillea) tree row and Senna spectabilisDC. (senna) hedgerow grown with Zea mays L. (maize) and a sole maize crop, during one cropping season. The hypothesis was that a tree with a large nutrient uptake would have a greater competitive effect upon coexisting plants than a tree that takes up less and internally cycles nutrients. The field study was conducted on a kaolinitic Oxisol in the sub-humid highlands of western Kenya. Soil nitrate and ammonium were measured to 300 cm depth and 525 cm distance from the tree rows, before and after maize cropping. Ammonium concentrations were small and did not change significantly during the cropping season. There was > 8 mg nitrate kg–1 in the upper 60 cm and at 90–180 cm depth at the start of the season, except within 300 cm of the senna hedgerow where concentrations were smaller. During the season, nitrate in the grevillea-maize system only decreased in the upper 60 cm, whereas nitrate decreased at almost every depth and distance from the senna hedgerow. Inorganic N (nitrate plus ammonium) decreased by 94 kg ha–1 in the senna-maize system and 33 kg ha–1 in the grevillea-maize system.The aboveground N content of the trees increased by 23 kg ha–1 for grevillea and 39 kg ha–1 for senna. Nitrogen uptake by maize was 85 kg ha–1 when grown with grevillea and 65 kg ha–1 with senna. Assuming a mineralisation input of 50 kg N ha–1season–1, the decrease in inorganic soil N approximately equalled plant N uptake in the grevillea-maize system, but exceeded that in the senna-maize system. Pruning and litter fall removed about 14 kg N ha–1 a–1 from grevillea, and > 75 kg N ha–1 a–1 from senna. The removal of pruned material from an agroforestry system may lead to nutrient mining and a decline in productivity.  相似文献

Toxicity of Pfiesteria piscicida (strain CAAE #2200) in the presence of fish (juvenile hybrid tilapia, Oreochromis sp., total length 3–6 cm) has been maintained in the laboratory for 19 months by serial transfer of toxic cells using a modified maintenance protocol. Toxicity was re-induced when toxin-producing P. piscicida cells were separated from fish and cultured on algal prey for 50 days and then re-introduced to new tanks containing fish. We confirmed toxicity in a strain of P. shumwayae (strain CAAE #101272). Toxicity to fish was demonstrated in culture filtrates (0.2 μm) derived from cultures of both Pfiesteria spp., however, it was markedly reduced in comparison to unfiltered water. Filtrates retained toxic activity when stored at −20 °C for up to 6 months. Toxicity to fish was retained when filtrates were held at room temperature for 48 h, at 70 °C for 30 min or at 88–92 °C for 2 h. P. piscicida killed all finfish species tested. Grass shrimp (Paleomonetes pugio; adult 2–3 cm), blue crab (Callinectes sapidus; juvenile 4–7 cm) and brine shrimp (Artemia sp.; 18–24 h post-hatch) were unaffected by concentrations of toxin(s) that killed juvenile tilapia in 4–24 h. Ichthyotoxic activity of filtrates from fish-killing cultures and stability of the toxic activity were similar among P. piscicida and P. shumwayae. These results confirm previously reported observations on toxicity of P. piscicidaand P. shumwayae to finfish. We have maintained toxicity in the laboratory for longer periods than have previously been routinely achieved, and we have demonstrated that the toxic activity is heat stable. In contrast to previous studies with other toxic P. piscicida strains, we did not observe toxic activity to blue crabs or other crustaceans.  相似文献

Synopsis We studied vertical distribution, substrate preference and food choice of brown trout, Salmo trutta, from benthic gillnet catches at four littoral sampling locations in a Norwegian hydroelectric reservoir. The sampling locations had different bottom substrates; at one location the bottom substrate consisted of sand, while at the other three, substrates consisted of stones ranging 2–5 cm, 10–30 cm and 30–150 cm in diameter, respectively. Small-sized (< 160 cm) and intermediate-size (164–269 mm) brown trout were mainly caught close to the bottom (0–0.5 m above). Small-sized brown trout were caught in the highest frequency at the location with substrate consisting of 10–30 cm large stones. Intermediate-sized brown trout were also caught in highest frequency at this location, but were also caught in a high frequency at the location with sandy substrate. In contrast, the catches of large-sized ( 270 mm) brown trout did not vary with distance from the bottom or with substrate coarseness. The most important food items for the brown trout were aquatic insects, surface insects, Eurycercus lamellatus and crustacean zooplankton, mainly Daphnia longispina, Bythotrephes longimanus, and Holopedium gibberum. In accordance with the differences in vertical distribution, benthic food was more important to small than to large brown trout. We argue that small brown trout stayed close to the bottom to reduce aggressive behaviour from larger specimens, and that small brown trout were therefore more dependent on benthic food items. We also argue that the observed differences in substrate preference between the size groups of brown trout is explained by variation in access to shelter, visual isolation between individuals and benthic feeding conditions between locations.  相似文献

Summary Kalopanax pictus (Thunb.) Nakai is a tall tree, and its wood has been used in making furniture, while its stem bark is used for medicinal purposes. Here, we report on the micropropagation of Kalopanax pictus via somatic embryogenesis. Embryogenic callus was induced from immature zygotic embryos. The frequency embryogenic callus induction is influenced by days of seed harvest. Callus formation was primarily observed along the radicle tips of zygotic embryos incubated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with 4.4 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacctic acid (2,4-D). Somatic embryogenesis was observed following transfer of embryogenic callus to MS medium lacking 2,4-D. Somatic embryos at the cotyledonary stage were obtained after 6 wk following culture. Frequency of conversion of somatic embryos into plantlets was low (35%) on a hormone-free MS basal medium, but it increased to 61% when the medium was supplemented with 0.05% charcoal. Gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment markedly enhanced the germination frequency of embryos up to 83%. All plantlets obtained showed 98% survival on moist peat soil (TKS2) artificial soil matrix. About 30 000 Kalopanax pictus plants were propagated via somatic embryogenesis and grown to 3-yr-old plants. These results indicate that production of woody medicinal Kalopanax pictus plantlets through somatic embryogenesis can be practically applicable for propagation.  相似文献

The biomass, production and mortality of fine roots (roots with diameter <2.5 mm) were studied in a typical Mediterranean holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) forest in NE Spain using the minirhizotron methodology. A total of 1212 roots were monitored between June of 1994 and March of 1997. Mean annual fine root biomass in the holm oak forest of Prades was 71±8 g m–2 yr–1. Mean annual production for the period analysed was 260+11 g m–2 yr–1. Mortality was similar to production, with a mean value of 253±3 g m–2 yr–1. Seasonal fine root biomass presented a cyclic behaviour, with higher values in autumn and winter and lower in spring and summer. Production was highest in winter, and mortality in spring. In summer, production and mortality values were the lowest for the year. Production values in autumn and spring were very similar. The vertical distribution of fine root biomass decreased with increasing depth except for the top 10–20 cm, where values were lower than immediately below. Production and mortality values were similar between 10 and 50 cm depth. In the 0–10 cm and the 50–60 cm depth intervals, both production and mortality were lower.  相似文献

Four parasitoids were imported from five countries in Eurasia and released in northwestern Washington, US, to control the apple ermine moth (AEM), Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller, which colonized the Northwest around 1981. From 1988 to 1991, 95,474 individuals of Ageniaspis fuscicollis (Dalman) from France, China, Korea, and Russia were released in Washington. Parasitism of AEM increased 4- to 5-fold over that produced by preexisting natural enemies between 1989 and 1994 at 22 monitored sites. Subsequently, the wasp dispersed up to 20 km from release sites. A. fuscicollis also parasitized the cherry ermine moth, Yponomeuta padellus (L.), which was discovered in the Pacific Northwest in 1993. A total of 1813 individuals of Herpestomus brunnicornis (Gravenhorst) from France, Korea, and Japan were released in 1989–1991, and 26 wasps were recovered in 1994–1995. From 1989 to 1991, 2647 Diadegma armillata (Gravenhorst) individuals from France were released. D. armillata was recovered at one site in 1991 two months following release, but no other recoveries have been made. A total of 8274 Eurystheae scutellaris(Robineau-Desvoidy) individuals were released in 1989 to 1991. However, this tachinid has not been recovered. A consistent decline of AEM populations occurred in 1989–1995, including at sites where A. fuscicollis was not recovered, suggesting other factors also contributed to this pest’s decline. Now well established in western Washington, A. fuscicollis may help suppress future outbreaks of Y. malinellus and its congener, Y. padellus.  相似文献

Leech blood apparently contains considerably less chloride than generally used in physiological experi ments. Instead of 85–130 mM Cl used in experimental salines, leech blood contains around 40 mM Cl and up to 45 mM organic anions, in particular malate. We have reinvestigated the distribution of Cl across the cell membrane of identified glial cells and neurones in the central nervous system of the leech Hirudo medicinalis L., using double-barrelled Cl- and pH-selective micro electrodes, in a conventional leech saline, and in a saline with a low Cl concentration (40 mM), containing 40 mM malate. The interference of anions other than Clto the response of the ion-selective microelectrodes was estimated in Cl-free salines (Cl replaced by malate and/or gluconate). The results show that the absolute intracellu lar Cl activities (aCli) in glial cells and neurones, but not the electrochemical gradients of Cl across the glial and the neuronal cell membranes, are altered in the low Cl, malate-based saline. In Retzius neurones, aCli is lower than expected from electrochemical equilibrium, while in pressure neurones and in neuropil glial cells, aCli is distributed close to its equilibrium in both salines, re spectively. The steady-state intracellular pH values in the glial cells and Retzius neurones are little affected (0.1 pH units) in the low Cl, malate-based saline.  相似文献

The distribution of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense Lebour has apparently expanded within the southern hemisphere during the last 2 decades. Toxic blooms of A. tamarense were recorded in Argentinean coastal waters since 1980; however, the first documented bloom in southern Brazil was in 1996. In this study, 13 strains of A. tamarense from southern Brazil were isolated and kept in culture. Phylogenetic analysis using RFLP and DNA sequences of the D1–D2 region of large subunit ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clearly indicates that Brazilian strains are most closely related to other South American strains. The strains from South America are placed firmly within a phylogenetic clade which contains strains from North America, northern Europe and northern Asia, previously called the North American clade. Possible dispersal hypotheses are discussed. The cultures were also analyzed for saxitoxin and its derivatives by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The main saxitoxin groups found were the low toxicity N-sulfocarbamoyl group, C1, 2 (30–84%), followed by the high potency carbamate toxins, gonyautoxins 1, 4 (6.6–55%), gonyautoxins 2, 3 (0.3–29%), neosaxitoxin (1.4–24%) and saxitoxin (0–4.4%). The toxin composition is similar to that of other strains from South America, supporting a close relationship between A. tamarense from southern Brazil and other areas of South America. Toxicity values were variable (7.07–65.92 pg STX cell−1), with the higher range falling among the most toxic values recorded for cultures of A. tamarense, indicating the significant risk for shellfish contamination and human intoxication during blooms of this species along the southern Brazilian coast.  相似文献

The numbers of perch Perca fluviatilis in the Cikola backwater system of the river Danube were estimated by mark-recapture techniques using multiple fishings. Fish were caught by fyke nets and electrical fishing. The latter method was unselective for sex and the catch data could be used to correct the sex bias in the fyke net catches. A population estimate in April of 6059 ind ha–1 (95% C.L. 5135–7386) for perch > 5 cm was obtained for a 0.6 ha area of backwater and 1665 ind ha–1 (95% C.L. 1204–2692) in May for a 0.4 ha area of a small bay.  相似文献

Although southern South America has experienced such complex events, there is a paucity of studies examining the effects on intraspecific diversification in this part of the world. Liolaemus pictus is the southernmost distributed lizard in the Chilean temperate forest, whose genetic structure has likely been influenced by Pleistocene glaciations. We conducted a phylogeographic study of L. pictus in Chile and Argentina based on one mitochondrial and two nuclear genes recovering two strongly divergent groups, Northern and Southern clades. The first group is distributed from the northernmost limit of the species to the Araucanía region while the second group is distributed throughout the Andes and the Chiloé archipelago in Southern Chile. Our results suggest that L. pictus originated 751 Kya, with divergence between the two clades occurring in the late Pleistocene. Demographic reconstructions for the Northern and Southern clades indicate a decrease in effective population sizes likely associated with Pleistocene glaciations. Surprisingly, patterns of genetic variation, clades age and historical gene flow in populations distributed within the limits of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) are not explained by recent colonization. We propose an “intra-Andean multiple refuge” hypothesis, along with the classical refuge hypothesis previously proposed for the biota of the Chilean Coastal range and Eastern Andean Cordillera. Our hypothesis is supported by niche modelling analysis suggesting the persistence of fragments of suitable habitat for the species within the limits of the LGM ice shield. In consideration of their origin the adaptive strategies of the evergreen species of the Mediterranean maquis were analysed. Rosmarinus officinalis L., Erica arborea L., and Erica multiflora L. had the lowest net photosynthetic rate (PN) in the favourable period [7.8±0.6 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], the highest PN decrease (on an average 86 % of the maximum) but the highest recovery capacity (>70 % of the maximum) at the first rainfall in September. Cistus incanus L. and Arbutus unedo L. had the highest PN during the favourable period [15.5±5.2 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], 79 % decrease during drought, and a lower recovery capacity (on an average 54 %). Quercus ilex L., Phillyrea latifolia L., and Pistacia lentiscus L. had an intermediate PN in the favourable period [9.2±1.3 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], a lower reduction during drought (on an average 63 %), and a range from 62 % (Q. ilex and P. latifolia) to 39 % (P. lentiscus) of recovery capacity. The Mediterranean species had higher decrease in PN and stomatal conductance during drought and a higher recovery capacity than the pre-Mediterranean species. Among the pre-Mediterranean species, P. latifoliahad the best adaptation to long drought periods also by its higher leaf mass per area (LMA) which lowered leaf temperature thus decreasing transpiration rate during drought. Moreover, its leaf longevity determined a more stable leaf biomass during the year. Among the Mediteranean species, R. officinalis was the best adapted species to short drought periods by its ability to rapidly recover. Nevertheless, R. officinalis had the lowest tolerance to high temperatures by its PN dropping below half its maximum value when leaf temperature was over 33.6°C.
