Vertical distribution of primary production (PP) and concentration of chlorophyll a (Chl) were studied during two cruises in the Drake Passage in November 2007 and 2008. Variability in the vertical curves of Chl was registered in the different hydrological zones of the Drake Passage. The Antarctic waters were characterized by a well-defined deep Chl maximum (DCM) during the austral spring. The investigation allowed us to conclude that the influence of DCM should be taken into consideration for a model-based estimation of annual PP in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Summary Nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton species composition in near surface samples were studied along a S-N gradient in the Drake Passage, in early December 1984. Nitrate concentrations were much lower than usually previously reported from circum-Antarctic waters. Comparison of dissolved nutrient concentrations with growth requirements of Antarctic plankton algae suggests potential limitation of at least some species by nitrate or silicate. The taxonomic composition of the phytoplankton in our samples seemed to be partially controlled by competition for limiting nutrients.  相似文献

Algal and bacterial processes in platelet ice during late austral summer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The biota inhabiting layers of platelet ice were investigated in the Weddell Sea during late austral summer. Due to meltwater release, the salinity of the interstitial water between platelets was reduced. Algae and bacteria accumulated within this ice environment attaining concentrations of up to 500 μg in total pigments (chlorophyll a plus phaeopigments) and 2 mg in bacterial biomass per liter. Pennate diatoms of the genus Fragilariopsis were most common in the platelet layer, while ice-free water was dominated by autotrophic nanoflagellates. Protozoa contributed only 5% or less to the total protistan (microalgae plus protozoa) cell concentration in the ice, compared to about 10% in open water, thus suggesting a low grazing pressure within the platelet habitat. The bulk of bacterial biomass occurred within the dense assemblages of pennate diatoms that grew attached to the ice platelets. Algal and bacterial concentrations in the interstitial water between platelets were much lower. Measurements of bacterial growth showed that substantial heterotrophic potential can be established within assemblages inhabiting late summer platelet ice. Small-scale analyses of bacterial activity patterns revealed that those bacteria that were closely associated with ice and/or algae showed considerably less biomass-specific substrate uptake than cells that occurred freely suspended in the interstitial water, indicating that their physiological state differed. Carbon cycling in Southern Ocean is a major issue in climate change, hence the need to understand the role of biota in the regulation of carbon fixation and cycling. Southern Ocean is a heterogeneous system, characterized by a strong seasonality, due to long dark winter. Yet, currently little is known about biogeochemical dynamics during this season, particularly in the deeper part of the ocean. We studied bacterial communities and processes in summer and winter cruises in the southern Drake Passage. Here we show that in winter, when the primary production is greatly reduced, Bacteria and Archaea become the major producers of biogenic particles, at the expense of dissolved organic carbon drawdown. Heterotrophic production and chemoautotrophic CO2 fixation rates were substantial, also in deep water, and bacterial populations were controlled by protists and viruses. A dynamic food web is also consistent with the observed temporal and spatial variations in archaeal and bacterial communities that might exploit various niches. Thus, Southern Ocean microbial loop may substantially maintain a wintertime food web and system respiration at the expense of summer produced DOC as well as regenerate nutrients and iron. Our findings have important implications for Southern Ocean ecosystem functioning and carbon cycle and its manipulation by iron enrichment to achieve net sequestration of atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

Summary A net sampling survey was conducted around the island of South Georgia during July/August 1983. This study compares the age structure and vertical and horizontal distributions of the dominant copepods Calanoides acutus, Calanus simillimus, C. propinquus, Rhincalanus gigas, Metridia lucens and M. gerlachei. The chief physical and biological factors affecting the distributions of these species are assessed and the results are compared with those from a similar survey around the island carried out in early summer (1981/1982). The survey grid lay within the Polar Front during the winter survey, and horizontal changes in copepod abundance corresponded well to the temperature gradient across the front. This pattern was interrupted by the South Georgia shelf where the seasonal migrants (Calanoides acutus, Rhincalanus gigas and Calanus simillimus) occurred in high abundance. The concentration of these migrants over the shelf relative to the oceanic surface layer was attributed to the shelf having prevented their seasonal migration. Within the oceanic area the copepods occupied differing depths, with Calanoides acutus and Metridia gerlachei living deeper than Calanus simillimus, C. propinquus and M. lucens. The populations also tended to live deeper in the warmer (NW) portion of the oceanic survey area. In contrast to the summer survey the age structure of each species showed little variation throughout the survey area. This was attributed mainly to the decreased rates of copepod growth and metabolism in winter.  相似文献

Microzooplankton grazing was investigated in surface waters of the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic sectors of the Southern Ocean by the dilution method. Phytoplankton growth varied mainly between 0.1 and 0.4 day−1, and microzooplankton grazing between 0.0 and 0.3 day−1. Great fluctuations in phytoplankton growth rate were observed at one station within 3 weeks and between closely spaced stations. Microzooplankton grazing rates were similar to phytoplankton growth rate despite the variation of phytoplankton growth rates, although in some cases, phytoplankton growth overwhelmed microzooplankton grazing. These observations suggest that microzooplankton are the main consumers of primary producers, and that steady state between phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing is usually established in the Southern Ocean in austral summer. This study enlarge the knowledge on species composition, distribution and community structure of pelagic polychaetes on the basis of finely stratified spatial sampling representing austral summer conditions in the Strait of Magellan. Zooplankton samples were collected in late austral summer 1995. A total of 56,489 pelagic polychaete specimens were collected. Eight holopelagic polychaete taxa were recorded in addition to Spionidae and Terebellidae larvae and reproductive stolons of Autolytinae. Pelagobia longicirrata (Lopadorhynchidae) was the most abundant species, representing about 96 % (54,092 specimens, 184.6 ind. 100 m?3) of all individuals, followed by Tomopteris planktonis (Tomopteridae) at 3 % (1,725 specimens, 5.9 ind. 100 m?3). The longest measured individuals belonged to T. planktonis, which also showed the largest size range, whereas the smallest individuals belonged to P. longicirrata. Spatial distribution of polychaetes in terms of abundance was not related to bottom depth, but rather the number of taxa was lower in the central part of the Strait. P. longicirrata and T. planktonis were negatively related to chlorophyll a. In addition, the first was negatively related to temperature instead the second was positively affected by salinity. Polychaetes were widely distributed in both epi- and mesopelagic realms, whereas they were almost absent above 80 m depth. Both of the most abundant species were concentrated in the deepest layers sampled (below 100 m) throughout day and night hours without showing any specific migratory behavior.  相似文献

Summary Phyto- and protozooplankton were sampled in the upper 10 m of the water column in austral summer during a cruise of RV Polarstern from January 6 to February 20 1985 in the eastern Bransfield Strait vicinity and in the northern, southeastern (off Vestkapp, twice: I and II) and southern Weddell Sea (Vahsel Bay across the Filchner Depression to Gould Bay). The plankton assemblages are discussed in relation to physical, chemical and biological factors in the different geographical areas in summer. Phytoplankton biomass (Phytoplankton carbon, PPC) ranged from 4–194 g carbon/l and consisted on average of 65% diatoms and 35% autotrophic flagellates. Whereas in the northwest phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by small nanoflagellates (78% of PPC), higher biomass of diatoms (54–94% of PPC) occurred at the other sampling sites. In general autotrophic flagellates and small pennate diatoms dominated at oceanic stations; in neritic areas large centric diatoms prevailed. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 0.25–3.14/g chl a/l with a mean of 1.13/gmg chlorophyll a/l and an average phytoplankton carbon/chlorophyll a ratio of 39. Protozooplankton biomass (Protozooplankton carbon, PZC) ranged from 0–67 g carbon/l and consisted of 49% ciliates, 49% heterotrophic dinoflagellates and 2% tintinnids. Heterotrophic dinoflagellates were more important in the northern investigation areas (58%–84% of PZC). Ciliates dominated the protozooplankton in the southeast and south (56%–65% of PZC); higher abundances of tintinnids were observed only in the south (11% of PZC). The most remarkable feature of the surface waters was the high protozooplankton biomass: protozooplankton amounted to 25% on an average of the combined biomass of PPC plus PZC for the entire investigation period. Protozoan biomass in the southeastern and southern Weddell Sea occasionally exceeded phytoplankton biomass. Temperature, salinity, and inorganic nutrients were generally lower in the southern regions; at most of these stations a meltwater layer occurred in the upper meters of the water column. We suggest that this physical regime allows a well developed summer system with a high proportion of heterotrophic microplankton. In the eastern Bransfield Strait, in the northern Weddell Sea and close to the coast off Vestkapp (I), however, early summer conditions occurred with less protozooplankton contribution.Contribution no. 427 from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research  相似文献

The composition and distribution of microphytoplankton assemblages in the vicinity of South Georgia were examined during a krill survey conducted during voyage 119 the RV Africana in austral summer (January/February) 1994. Microphytoplankton distribution was studied at 83 stations along a zig-zag transect in the waters surrounding South Georgia. Oceanographic and zooplankton data suggest that conditions were anomalous during the investigation, in that sub-Antarctic surface waters had probably been advected southwards and were present around the island. The two most widely distributed species were Corethron criophilum and Eucampia antarctica, which were recorded at all stations sampled. Also well-represented amongst the microphytoplankton assemblages were temperate, neritic species such as Chaetoceros atlanticus, Proboscia alata and Odontella weissflogii. This can probably be related to the intrusion of sub-Antarctic surface waters unusually far south. Cluster and ordination analysis identified three distinct groupings of stations in the waters surrounding the islands. These were found to the east, west and north of the islands. The diatom groupings identified during this investigation broadly correspond to three water masses previously described in the vicinity of South Georgia. Despite the anomalous hydrographical conditions that existed during the investigation, the differences in phytoplankton were negligible when compared to normal years. Small mesoscale features are, however, important in imposing biogeographic patterns on microphytoplankton. Received: 21 February 1996 / Accepted: 3 November 1996  相似文献

Knowledge about the protist diversity of the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean is scarce. We tested the hypothesis that distinct protist community assemblages characterize large-scale water masses. Therefore, we determined the composition and biogeography of late summer protist assemblages along a transect from the coast of New Zealand to the eastern Ross Sea. We used state of the art molecular approaches, such as automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis and 454-pyrosequencing, combined with high-performance liquid chromatography pigment analysis to study the protist assemblage. We found distinct biogeographic patterns defined by the environmental conditions in the particular region. Different water masses harbored different microbial communities. In contrast to the Arctic Ocean, picoeukaryotes had minor importance throughout the investigated transect and showed very low contribution south of the Polar Front. Dinoflagellates, Syndiniales, and small stramenopiles were dominating the sequence assemblage in the Subantarctic Zone, whereas the relative abundance of diatoms increased southwards, in the Polar Frontal Zone and Antarctic Zone. South of the Polar Front, most sequences belonged to haptophytes. This study delivers a comprehensive and taxon detailed overview of the protist composition in the investigated area during the austral summer 2010.  相似文献

Photosynthetic oxygen production by phytoplankton and community respiration in the Indian sector of the Antarctic Ocean were estimated from changes in oxygen concentrations in light and dark bottles. Gross production varied between 0.1 and 5.1 µmol O2 l-1 day-1. In the same water, community respiration (the sum of oxygen consumption by heterotrophs and phytoplankton) was 0.4-3.6 µmol O2 l-1 day-1, which accounted for 47-343% of the gross production. Algal and heterotrophic respirations were distinguished using some assumptions. These estimates showed that heterotrophic respiration accounted for most of the community respiration (70-91% depending upon the assumptions), indicating that heterotrophic respiration plays an important role in the mineralization of phytoplankton production in the surveyed sea area. Gross production rate correlated with chlorophyll a concentration, showing that the photosynthetic production rate of oxygen depends on the abundance of phytoplankton. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between gross production and community respiration rates. These regression equations suggested that negative net production occurred under the usually low concentration of chlorophyll observed in the Indian sector of the Antarctic Ocean. Hence, the net exchange of carbon dioxide due to biological processes through the sea surface seemed to be not as large as expected in the Antarctic Ocean, although the number of data were limited at this stage.  相似文献

Microphytoplankton distribution in the Atlantic sector of theSouthern Ocean was investigated along a transect during theSAAMES II cruise undertaken in late austral summer (January/February) 1993. Samples were collected at 60 km intervals between34 and 70°S for the analysis of mineral nutrients, and theidentification and enumeration of microphytoplankton. Peaksin microphytoplankton abundance were recorded in the neriticwaters of Africa and Antarctica, at all major oceanic fronts, and in the marginal ice zone (MIZ). Partial correlation analysisindicated that 45% of the total variance associated with microphytoplanktonabundance could be explained by silicate and phosphate concentrations, while temperature accounted for 65% (P<0.001). Cluster andordination analyses identified two major groups of stations, one north and one south of the Subantarctic Front (SAF). Thisdivision appears to be related to differences in temperatureand silicate concentrations. Each region comprised distinctmicrophytoplankton subgroups associated with specific watermasses or hydrological features. Indicator species could beidentified for some water masses. In the MIZ, microphytoplanktonspecies composition and succession were strongly affected bysea-ice throughout the summer.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretionrates were measured on the aggregate form (aggregated sexualblastozooid generation) and solitary form (solitary asexualoozooid generation) of Salpa thompsoni sampled from waters offthe Antarctic Peninsula from December 1999 to February 2000,in conjunction with body composition analysis (water, ash, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus). The specific metabolic rates of S.thompsoni were weight-independent. No significant differencesbetween the aggregate and solitary forms were observed for theweight-specific rates with the exception of the oxygen consumptionrate on phosphorus weight. Metabolic loss estimated for theaggregate and solitary forms was 3.0 and 3.5% day–1 forbody carbon, 1.6 and 1.8% for body nitrogen, 3.9 and 10.6% forbody phosphorus, respectively. Contents of carbon (6.0% of dryweight for the aggregate form and 5.1% for the solitary form),nitrogen (1.5 and 1.3%) and phosphorus (0.15 and 0.11%) tendedto decrease with the increase of dry weight. All mean valuesof each body constituent (water, ash, C, N and P) for the aggregateand solitary forms were not significantly different in the samedry weight ranges.  相似文献

During January/February 1990 the floristic composition and biomass of diatoms and dinoflagellates in Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) were investigated. The study area included eight stations, seven of which were inshore and one offshore. Of the 94 taxa identified, 58 were diatoms and 34 were dinoflagellates. Cell densities were higher in surface layers and particularly at two stations, one located at the centre of the bay, and the other to the south of the Terra Nova station. While density data showed that the diatoms predominated over the dinoflagellates and over Phaeocystis sp., the biomass values were largely made up of the dinoflagellates contribution.  相似文献

During the austral summer of 1995, distributions of phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll a), primary production, and nutrient concentrations along two north-south transects in the marginal ice zone of the northwestern Weddell Sea were examined as part of the 8th Korean Antarctic Research Program. An extensive phytoplankton bloom, ranging from 1.6 to 11.2 mg m−3 in surface chlorophyll a concentration, was encountered along the eastern transect and extended ca. 180 km north of the ice edge. The spatial extent of the bloom was closely related to the density field induced by the input of meltwater from the retreating sea ice. However, the extent (ca. 200 km) of the phytoplankton bloom along the western transect exceeded the meltwater-influenced zone (ca. 18 km). The extensive bloom along the western transect was more closely related to local hydrography than to the proximity of the ice edge and the resulting meltwater-induced stability of the upper water column. In addition, the marginal ice zone on the western transect was characterized by a deep, high phytoplankton biomass (up to 8 mg Chl a m−3) extending to 100-m depth, and the decreased nutrient concentration, which was probably caused by passive sinking from the upper euphotic zone and in situ growth. Despite the low bloom intensity relative to the marginal ice zone in both of the transects, mean primary productivity (2.6 g C m−2 day−1) in shelf waters corresponding to the northern side of the western transect was as high as in the marginal ice zone (2.1 g C m−2 day−1), and was 4.8 times greater than that in open waters, suggesting that shelf waters are as highly productive as the marginal ice zone. A comparison between the historical productivity data and our data also shows that the most productive regions in the Southern Ocean are shelf waters and the marginal ice zone, with emerging evidence of frontal regions as another major productive site. Ingestion, respiration and excretion rates as well as lipid and protein body content of the dominant Antarctic copepod Calanoides acutus (CIV to adult females) were studied during the period covering the end of phytoplankton bloom (February) to the beginning of transition to overwintering (March-April). Daily rations measured with gut fluorescence varied from 2.2 to 2.7% in surface C. acutus. Weight-specific respiration and excretion rates in deep C. acutus decreased by a factor of 11 and 3.5–3.8 compared to their surface counterparts. High lipid (up to 455 µg ind–1) and protein (198 µg ind–l) content was observed in surface C. acutus CV in February; a month later the animals with similar lipid and protein content were found in the depth (500–1000 m layer). Their lipid reserves were enough to overwinter and probably to ascend, molt and reproduce. At the same time some of the deep CVs had much lower protein and lipid content and could survive only for 4–5 months. Our own and literature data led to the conclusion that females of C. acutus reach adulthood at the age of more than one year while development of males could be completed in one year.  相似文献

The photosynthesis-irradiance relationships (P-I curves) ofnatural plankton samples were studied in the Weddell Sea ice-edgezone, between Elephant Island and South Orkney Islands, duringthe austral summer of 1988–89. Three water bodies weredistinguished in the region: Bellingshausen Sea waters modifiedafter flowing through Drake Passage and Bransfield Strait, WeddellSea waters and Weddell Sea waters modified by melting. The stationssituated in modified Bellingshausen waters showed a net phytoplanktoncomposition which was different from that of the other two waterbodies. Weddell Sea waters and Weddell Sea waters modified bymelting of sea ice had the same net phytoplankton composition. In the area of modified Weddell Sea waters, there was an accumulationof phytoplankton in the upper 40 m (>4 mg Chl m–1).pB, and  相似文献

Twenty one species of seabirds plus fur seals were observed at sea near the Antarctic Peninsula, between 60 °–68 °S, in May and June 1986, a season for which few published observations of marine animals are available for this area. Here we describe and quantify the importance of fishing activities as well as sea-ice cover and other environmental variables to the distribution patterns of birds and seals. The most striking aspect of the winter avifauna was its pronounced concentration near fishing trawlers operating on the continental shelf to the north and west of Elephant Island, and its temporal shift in response to the seasonal advance of the ice edge.  相似文献

This study seeks to determine the effects of local hydrography on the distribution, abundance and feeding of chaetognaths in the Lazarev Sea, an area strongly controlled by physical processes which has been held responsible for initiating the Weddell Polynya. Zooplankton samples were taken at 39 stations on four transects located between 6°W and 3°E and from 60°S to 70°S between surface and 350 m. The dominant species, Eukrohnia hamata, accounted for 86.5% of all chaetognaths, followed by Sagitta gazellae (8.1%) and Sagitta marri (5.4%). These three species showed distinct vertical and horizontal distribution patterns. While E. hamata and S. marri had maximum abundances below 250 m depth, S. gazellae showed a narrow distribution band in the upper 150 m depth. The distribution pattern was strongly modified at the Greenwich meridian with an upward transport of a high abundance of deep dwelling organisms (S. marri and E. hamata) and a displacement of S. gazellae to the surface, likely coupled with the rise of the warm, saline halo around the Maud Rise. Small copepods were the main prey of all three chaetognath species. Feeding rates (FR) varied among species and depth. Sagitta marri showed the highest FR with 0.38 prey d−1, followed by S. gazellae and E. hamata (0.22 and 0.07 prey d−1). Feeding rates were usually highest in the 25–80-m stratum. Size distribution and maturity of E. hamata revealed a dominance of small and immature organisms along all depths and stations, suggesting that this area might be acting as an important source of recently spawned organisms to the surface.  相似文献
