Abstract. 1. The number of ovarioles and the potential fecundity in first (fundatrigenia) and second generation emigrants of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was investigated.
2. The relationships between weight and host quality on ovariole number were investigated.
3. The first generation of emigrants had a greater number of ovarioles and a higher fecundity than the second.
4. There was a positive relationship between ovariole number and weight.
5. The number of ovarioles and weight decreased with decreasing host quality.

Summary

Twenty percent of the species from 88% of the genera, which comprise the British Staphylinidae fauna, were dissected and their ovaries attributed to one often defined types. Three-quarters of the species studied possessed six ovarioles in each ovary although the eight species of Bledius examined were found to have only a single ovary, a condition previously thought to be unique to the family Scarabaeidae within the Coleoptera. The type of ovariole development within most staphylinid subfamilies is remarkably constant. Any inconsistencies are described. Species of Aleochara, known to have parasitic larvae, were found to have a larger number of ovarioles per ovary than any other member of the Staphylinidae examined. They also exhibited a greater variation in ovariole number within each species which is correlated with the size of the adult beetle.  相似文献

Abstract:  Phenols and amino acids have previously been involved in the resistance of cereals to aphids. In the present study, the mean total concentrations of both compounds were quantitatively estimated from leaf-tissue samples collected at three growth stages (third, fifth and seventh leaf stages) from maize and barley seedlings and then correlated with the mean 7-day fecundity of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Sitobion avenae (F.) (Homoptera, Aphididae) reared separately on the corresponding growth stages of each cereal. Results revealed an inverse correlation between the total concentration of each chemical in aphid-infested maize and barley plants and the fecundity of each aphid on every growth stage of the cereals. Moreover, R. padi led to an increase in total amino acids when reared on maize or barley without affecting the phenol concentration, while S. avenae induced a decrease in phenol levels but did not change the total amino acids on each growth stage of the plants. The significance of these results for understanding potential differences in requirements of cereal aphids for host selection and acceptance are discussed.  相似文献

天敌不仅直接捕食或寄生害虫,而且还能通过胁迫作用改变害虫的生长发育与繁殖,间接地影响害虫的适合度。本文以棉田重要害虫棉蚜Aphis gossypii Glover及其寄生性天敌蚜茧蜂Lysiphlebia japonica Ashmead为对象,在相同的大气二氧化碳浓度环境中研究了直接放蚜茧蜂和通过笼罩间接放蚜茧蜂所产生的胁迫作用对连续3代棉蚜生长发育与繁殖的影响。结果表明,直接放蚜茧蜂的胁迫作用使第1代棉蚜繁殖率明显下降;第2代如果继续受到寄生蜂的直接胁迫,棉蚜生长发育与繁殖得到恢复,但受到持续间接胁迫作用却使棉蚜繁殖率明显下降;第3代如果棉蚜继续受到寄生蜂的直接或间接胁迫,与当代或与前一代后一直未受到寄生蜂胁迫作用相比,其整个若虫发育历期明显延长或缩短,但其繁殖率均明显下降。我们的结果显示:评价天敌作用时,不仅仅考虑其直接的捕食或寄生作用,还应该综合考虑其"间接"的生态效应。  相似文献

The evolution of sexual dimorphism will depend on how sexual, fecundity and viability selection act within each sex, with the different forms of selection potentially operating in opposing directions. We examined selection in the dioecious plant Silene latifolia using planted arrays of selection lines that differed in flower size (small vs. large). In this species, a flower size/number trade-off exists within each sex, and males produce smaller and more numerous flowers than females. Moreover, floral traits are genetically correlated with leaf physiology. Sexual selection favoring males in the small-flower line occurred via greater overlap in the timing of flower output between males from this line and females. Fecundity selection favored males with high flower production, as siring success was proportionate to pollen production. Viability selection opposed sexual selection, favoring males from the large-flower line. In females, fecundity and viability selection operated in the same direction, favoring those from the large-flower line via greater seed production and survival. These results concur with the pattern of floral sexual dimorphism. Together with previous results they suggest that the outcome of the different forms of selection will be environmentally dependent, and therefore help to explain variation among populations in sexually dimorphic traits.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The reproductive status of individual queens in relation to the number of queens in polygyne colonies of Solenopsis invicta Buren was investigated under both field and laboratory conditions. In field colonies, the weight of individual queens is inversely related to the number of resident queens present. The weight of a queen is positively correlated with fecundity, as measured by the number of eggs laid in 5 h in isolation. Thus increasing queen number has a strong negative effect on the fecundity of individual queens in these colonies. A similar relationship was established in standardized laboratory colonies using queens from a single experimental population. Colony size by itself had no significant effect on queen weight in either the field or laboratory colonies, suggesting that the inverse relationship between queen number and fecundity results from mutual inhibition among queens, possibly involving pheromones, rather than reduced nutrition through lower worker/queen ratios. While uninseminated queens can comprise up to 50% of the functional (i.e. egglaying) queens in polygyne colonies of this ant, they tend to be less fecund than their inseminated nestmates; uninseminated queens within a given colony generally weigh 5–25% less.  相似文献

Couchman, J. R., King, P. E. 1980. Ovariole sheath structure and its relationship with developing embryos in a parthenogenetic viviparous aphid. (Zoology Department, University College, Swansea, U.K.) — Acta zool. (Stockh.) 61(3): 147–155. The ovariole sheath of the viviparous parthenogenetic aphid Brevicoryne brassicae has been the subject of an ultrastructural examination, particularly with regard to its relationship with embryos at various stages of ontogeny. The sheath is a unilaminar, squamous epithelial layer enclosing germarium and embryos, but does not have an intrinsic trophic role until the connection between the embryo and germarial trophocytes, in the form of the trophic cord, is lost. At this time there is a degree of thickening and an increase in the number of cell organelles with ultrastructural indications of metabolic activity, a situation paralleled in the embryonic serosa. There is also evidence that haemolymph components may have direct access to the embryos through intercellular spaces in the sheath. Intercellular junctions, microtubules and cell overlap in regions of the sheath adjacent to embryos at a more advanced state of development are all implicated in a mechanism which resists deformation, maintains sheath integrity and allows embryo passage. A tunica propria and microfilament bundles are absent in the ovariole sheath of this species.  相似文献

Summary A study has been made of the effect of crowding on both prenatal and postnatal control of wing development in aphids. In experiments on prenatal form control it was shown that brief controlled encounters of only a minute's duration between two adult aphids could cause them to switch from producing apterous to alate progeny. Aphids which had been exposed to contact with other aphids continued to produce alate progeny for several days. Evidence from a number of experiments suggests that the principle stimulus involved is tactile. In experiments on postnatal form control, it was shown that more alates developed among larvae which were reared together than among larvae reared in isolation.
Zusammenfassung In großen Blattlauskolonien werden leichter Geflügelte gebildet als in kleinen. Dafür gibt es zwei Ursachen. Bei hoher Dichte verändern die Aphiden die Physiologie der Pflanze dergestalt, daß bei den Läusen, die an ihr saugen, die Geflügeltenbildung gefördert wird; und bei hoher Befallsdichte vermehrt sich für die Aphiden auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit, stimulatorische Wirkungen aufeinander auszuüben. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Natur und Wirkungsweise der Wechselwirkung zwischen Individuen von Aphis craccivora Koch untersucht.Die Blattläuse wurden bei 20° und 10stündiger Photoperiode in völliger Isolation auf kleinen Blattscheiben gehalten und weiter vermehrt, die—aus Blättern ihrer Wirtspflanze herausgestanzt — auf einer Nährlösung schwammen. Unter diesen Bedingungen brachten sie überwiegend ungeflügelte Nachkommen hervor. Zur Erzeugung geflügelter Nachkommen konnten sie durch kurze Begegnungen mit anderen Aphiden angeregt werden. In einigen Versuchen wurden die Blattläuse für verschiedene Zeitabschnitte in kleine Käfige zusammengesperrt, in anderen wurden sie herausgefangen und veranlaßt, in rascher Folge mehrere Male übereinander hinwegzukriechen. Beide Behandlungsweisen bewirkten, daß die Aphiden von der Produktion ungeflügelter zur Produktion geflügelter Nachkommen umschalteten. Eine Anzahl von Versuchen berechtigen zu der Annahme, daß weder visuelle noch olfaktorische Reize dabei mitwirken, und es ist zu vermuten, daß in der Hauptsache Berührungsreize den Ausschlag geben. Der Versuch, einen entsprechenden künstlichen Reiz zu setzen, hatte nur zum Teil Erfolg.Die Blattläuse, welche einem Kontakt mit anderen Läusen ausgesetzt gewesen waren, wurden täglich auf frische Blattscheiben weitergesetzt und ihre Nachkommenschaft auf den Blattscheiben aufgezogen, auf denen sie geboren wurde. Auf diese Weise ließ es sich zeigen, daß kurze Begegnungen zwischen Blattläusen mehrere Tage lang einen Einfluß auf die Form der Nachkommenschaft beibehalten können, die sie danach produzieren.Die Flügelentwicklung von Aphis craccivora kann auch während der postnatalen Entwicklung beeinflußt werden und es ließ sich nachweisen, daß auch hierbei die Wechselwirkung zwischen den Larven einen wesentlichen Faktor darstellt. Isoliert auf Blattscheiben aufgezogene Larven entwickelten sich weniger häufig zu Geflügelten als solche, die in Dichten von zwei oder mehreren je Blattscheibe gehalten wurden.

The response to plant spacing by flying and landing aphids has been studied using cylindrical and horizontal sticky traps over cocksfoot and kale crops. Some aphid species showed a significant response to spacing, being caught more frequently over wide-than close-spaced crops; the regressions of catches over widely-spaced on those over close-spaced plants suggested that most of the species caught followed this trend irrespective of the host plant. The landing response to spacing on horizontal traps at 0.3 m was normally greater than that on cylindrical traps at 1 m. At 1 m, some species (e.g. Aphis fabae gp.) gave a different response to spacing in the two crops, whilst others (e.g. Rhopalosiphum oxyacanthaé) responded similarly to both crop spacings. In contrast to previous results with other aphid species and spaced groundnuts, the landing response of Rhopalosiphum spp. was elicited both when there was a cover crop (clover) between widely-spaced drills of cocksfoot and by widely-spaced cocksfoot alone. It is suggested that one stimulus eliciting the landing response with widely-spaced plants is the electromagnetic emission from bare earth between the plants. Aphid landing behaviour was influenced by the spacing of both cocksfoot and kale plants.  相似文献

Aphids are short-lived and occupy habitats which vary in quality in both time and space. They exploit their ephemerally nutritious habitats by rapidly producing many small offspring when conditions are good, and fewer, larger offspring when conditions are poor, at which time they also divert more of their resources into fat storage. Aphids of each of the generations which make up a life cycle have specific reproductive strategies adapted to the conditions they are most likely to encounter, that is they anticipate the predictable seasonal trends in habitat quality.  相似文献

Transgenic potatoes have been transformed with a gene coding the snowdrop lectin Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) and they have been shown to be partially resistant to aphids. GNA binds to insect gut cells, including those of aphids, consequently inducing disruption of nutrient assimilation. Aphid parasitoids are important natural biocontrol agents of aphids and some species such as Aphelinus abdominalis are commercially available. Aphid parasitoids are endoparasitoids during their larval stages and free-living insects as adults. They could be directly or indirectly affected by GNA during both these stages. In this work, we present data on the potential direct and indirect effects of GNA on adult A. abdominalis. Aphelinus abdominalis is a synovigenic species (eggs are matured throughout the adult life) which needs a diet relatively rich in proteins and amino-acids to produce anhydropic eggs (large, yolk-rich eggs that do not expand in the host during embryonic stages). Adult A. abdominalis females feed on aphid haemolymph and they may be directly exposed to the entomotoxin or indirectly affected by a change in aphid haemolymph quality due to intoxication by GNA. We conducted a first tier experiment to investigate this potential risk. A. abdominalis females were offered either aphids reared on control diet or aphids reared on GNA 0.1% diet as hosts (i.e., as food and oviposition sites). No trace of GNA was found in females fed with GNA-aphids but no GNA could be detected in the haemolymph of aphids fed a 0.1% GNA diet. Longevity and fecundity were not affected suggesting that the quality of the haemolymph necessary for A. abdominalis egg maturation and production was not significantly altered.  相似文献

The numbers of cereal aphids on the soil surface was assessed by soil samples and by counting the numbers captured in pitfall traps. A relationship was found by both methods between the density of aphids on the plants and the numbers of aphids on the soil. This relationship indicated that a higher proportion of the aphid population was on the soil surface at the lower densities on the plant. Reasons for this relationship are suggested and discussed.  相似文献

We investigated geographical variations in three fitness‐related traits (body melanisation, ovariole number and fecundity) in laboratory‐reared offspring of 10 populations of Drosophila melanogaster. The populations were collected from adjacent lowland and highland localities (~80–100 km apart) in the tropical as well as subtropical regions (11.15–31.06 °N) covering a linear distance about 3 000 kilometers from south to north on the Indian subcontinent. Persistence of within‐as well as between‐population differences at 21 °C suggest that observed variations in fitness‐related traits have a genetic basis. Populations from higher altitudes showed consistently higher trait values (1.4‐fold increase) as compared with their corresponding lowland populations. By contrast, latitudinal variations were about two‐fold higher across the entire continent. Along latitude as well as altitude, population means showed higher correlation values (r > 0.98) between all the three fitness traits. However, on the basis of within‐population analysis (assorted darker and lighter flies), changes in body melanisation were significantly correlated with fecundity but not with ovariole number. Thus, analysis of within‐population trait variability should be preferred as compared with data on population means for adaptive significance of fitness‐related traits. In the present study, the role of climatic selection is evident from regression analysis with changes in annual average temperature of the sites of origin of populations along latitude as well as altitude.  相似文献

In Drosophila melanogaster, ovariole number and thorax length are morphological characters thought to be associated with fitness. Maximum daily egg production in females is positively correlated with ovariole number, while thorax length is correlated with male reproductive success and female fecundity. Though both traits are related to fitness, ovariole number is likely to be under stabilizing selection, while thorax length appears to be under directional selection. Current research has focused on examining the sources of variation for ovariole number in relation to fitness, with a view towards elucidating how segregating variation is maintained in natural populations. Here, we utilize a diallel design to explore the genetic architecture of ovariole number and thorax length in nine isogenic lines derived from a natural population. The full diallel design allows the estimation of general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA), and also describes variation due to reciprocal effects (RGCA and RSCA). Ovariole number and thorax length differed with respect to their genetic architecture, reflective of the independent selective forces acting on the traits. For ovariole number, GCA accounted for the majority (67.3%) of variation segregating between the lines, with no evidence of reciprocal effects or inbreeding depression; SCA accounted for a small percentage (3.9%) of the variance, suggesting dominance variation; no reciprocal effects were observed. In contrast, for thorax length, the majority of the non-error variance was accounted for by SCA (17.9%), with only one third as much variance (6.2%) due to GCA. Interestingly, RSCA (nuclear–extranuclear interactions) accounted for slightly more variation (7.5%) than GCA in these data. Thus, genetic variation for thorax length is largely in accord with predictions for a fitness trait under directional selection: little additive genetic variation and substantial dominance variation (including a suggestion of inbreeding depression); while the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of variation for ovariole number are more complex.  相似文献

Buchnera, endosymbiotic bacteria of aphids possess many genomic copies per cell. In this study, we estimated genomic copy number per Buchnera cell from host insects at various developmental stages and of two different morphs, apterae and alatae, by fluorimetry and real-time quantitative PCR. The results indicated that the genomic copy number of Buchnera increased during postembryonic development of insects to adulthood, and that it decreased during the host's ageing. In Buchnera from alatae, the genomic copy number per cell was about twice as many as in those from apterae. DAPI-staining showed that the distribution of the genomic DNA in the Buchnera cells from old insects tended to aggregate, suggesting that intracellular structure of the genomic DNA of Buchnera varies in response to the physiological conditions of their host.  相似文献
