The Chorote Indians are hunter-gatherers and fishermen from north-west Argentina and south-west Paraguay who belong to the Mataco-Maká linguistic family. Their edible plants are identified by botanical and vernacular names, the parts employed and modes of preparation and consumption. The Chorote people use 57 plant species as a source of food, which they consume in 118 different ways. Five new edible species, that yield seven plant foods, are reported here for the first time for Chaquenian ethnic groups. However, only a few wild plant foods are in frequent use today, with most being used occasionally, infrequently or not at all. A cross-cultural comparison with four neighbouring ethnic groups reveals that one third of their plant foods are exclusive to the Chorote people, despite the fact that they share most of their edible plants with the other groups. Over eight kilobases (kb) of sequence from eight genes including two mitochondrial loci, Cyt b and 12S, and six nuclear loci, B2m , Zp3 , Tcp1, Sry, Smcx and Smcy , were used to investigate phylogenetic relationships among 11 taxa representing eight species within the rodent genus Mus . Particular attention was given to discerning relationships among species within the subgenus Mus including members of a Palearctic clade ( M. musculus , M. spicilegus , M. macedonicus and M. spretus ) and members of an Asian clade ( M. caroli , M. cookii and M. cervicolor ), as previous studies using different datasets have produced different topologies for taxa within these two groups. While parsimony analyses of the combined eight-gene dataset yielded a single, fully resolved tree, support values were lower for nodes resolving relationships within the Palearctic and Asian clades than they were elsewhere in the tree. In addition, a maximum likelihood analysis of the same eight-gene dataset yielded different topologies for both the Palearctic and the Asian clades. Both observations are indicative of clade instability. The nature of this instability was explored through a comparison with our previous study in which we included the two mitochondrial loci and only four of the six nuclear genes, and through an analysis of partitioned data, specifically mitochondrial vs. nuclear genes. In studies of phylogeography and taxonomy, strong emphasis is usually placed on the study of mitochondrial (mt)DNA. In the present study, we present a remarkable case in which highly phenotypically divergent species have almost no divergence in mtDNA. Yellowhammers ( Emberiza citrinella Linnaeus) and pine buntings ( Emberiza leucocephalos S. G. Gmelin) differ noticeably in appearance and song but hybridize in some areas of contact. They share a variety of closely-related mtDNA haplotypes, with little divergence in frequencies, indicating a mitochondrial divergence time sometime during or after the last major glacial period. By contrast, nuclear DNA (amplified fragment length polymorphism markers and CHD1Z gene sequences) differs more strongly between the species, and these differences can be used to identify intermediate genetic signatures of hybrids. The combined amount of mitochondrial diversity within yellowhammers and pine buntings is very low compared to other Emberiza species pairs, whereas the level of variation at the nuclear gene CHD1Z is comparable to that within other species pairs. Although it is difficult to completely reject the possibility that the two species split extremely recently and experienced rapid nuclear and phenotypic differentiation, we argue that the evidence better supports another possibility: the two species are older and mtDNA has recently introgressed between them, most likely as a result of a selective sweep. The marine hoplonemertean Oerstedia dorsalis is considered to be a highly polymorphic species with extensive geographic distribution. We show, based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 16S and nuclear internal transcribed spacer sequences, that there are genetic subsets withing this species. Seventy-one specimens of various colours from different geographic localities (in Europe) were sequenced and analysed using statistical parsimony and Bayesian analysis. Both analyses supported nine major clades. We conclude that O. dorsalis hides different species with geographic resolution. We used DNA fingerprints to determine whether the population structure and colony composition of the cooperative social spider Stegodyphus dumicola are compatible with requirements of interdemic ('group') selection: differential proliferation of demes or groups and limited gene flow among groups. To investigate gene flow among groups, spiders were collected from nests at 21 collection sites in Namibia. Analysis of molecular variance showed a small but highly significant differentiation among geographic regions (ΦPT = 0.23, P  = 0.001). Thirty-three nests at four collection sites (6–10 spiders per nest, 292 individual spiders) were investigated in more detail to evaluate variation within and among colonies and among collection sites. In these 33 nests, an average of 15% of loci (fingerprint bands) were polymorphic among nestmates; 16% of observed variance was partitioned among collection sites, 48% among nests within a collection site, and 36% among individuals within nests. Spatial autocorrelation analyses of spiders at three collection sites showed that the maximum extent of detectable spatial autocorrelation among individuals was approximately 30 m, indicating dispersal over greater distances is not typical. Molecular study of mitochondrial and nuclear genes and cytogenetic analysis were performed to examine possible patterns of speciation in the diverse Lophuromys flavopunctatus species complex of Ethiopia. Phylogenetic analysis of mtDNA data resulted in an unresolved bush of ten deeply diverged haplotype groups corresponding to potential species either well supported by various types of character or 'cryptic'. The cytogenetic analysis showed representatives of five of these mtDNA lineages to share an identical karyotype (2 n  = 70, NFa = 84), that has not been found previously in Ethiopia. One of them, L.  cf.  sikapusi , being a member of the L. flavopunctatus species complex, demonstrates remarkable morphological similarity to representatives of another species complex, L. sikapusi s.l ., which might be considered as a result of convergent evolution in analogous environments. Analysis of RAPD data suggests that at least two mtDNA types might have been subject to interspecific transfer due to hybridization. In the case of two sympatric haplotypes of L. brunneus we may assume that the contemporary pattern of variation between them can be explained by relatively recent hybridization with another distinct species, L. flavopunctatus . Genetic divergence in bat communities was assessed on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar and cryptic diversity was examined. Screening was carried out using partial sequences of the mitochondrial (mt)DNA cytochrome b gene on 399 individual bats belonging to the 18 species found on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar. For those bats that showed important genetic discontinuities, molecular markers (ND1 and nuclear RAG2 genes) were added to expand the sampling process. Phylogenetic reconstructions were obtained using maximum parsinomy, genetic distances, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian criteria. As an estimate of bats' flight performance, we measured for each species the wing aspect ratio and wing loading indexes, and correlated them with the maximum pairwise genetic distances obtained between southern Iberian and northern Moroccan populations. Genetic mtDNA distances between populations on both continents exceed 5% in seven out of 18 bat species analysed and unknown lineages were uncovered within the species complexes Myotis nattereri and Myotis mystacinus . We did not find a general pattern in the degree of permeability of the Straits of Gibraltar for bats. Genetic distances were not correlated with the ability to cross the Straits. Cuticular hydrocarbons are key compounds used for insect chemical communication and their species-specificity makes them of great utility to chemotaxonomists. However, very little is known about their long-term stability in relation to their use as reliable taxonomic tools. We compared the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of fresh extracts from four hornet ( Vespa ) species with extracts from specimens that were frozen for 1 year and of those stored in insect display boxes for 20 years. Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles were qualitatively very stable, maintaining their species-specific profiles even after 20 years. The long-term stability of cuticular hydrocarbons in hymenopterans opens up the possibility of using museum collections for chemotaxonomy studies and helping with the delineation of species in difficult groups.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 732–737.  相似文献

Velasco recently criticized our formal definition of the species concept, arguing for its inappropriateness both in fundamental and practical aspects [Velasco JD (2008) Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 93 , 865–869]. Here, we clarify some misunderstandings that are at the basis of Velasco's paper. First, we show why and how the definition of the species concept can be grounded in the theory of evolution and what that implies. Then, we explain why Velasco's formal criticisms are unjustified. Historically, morphological variation has been used to classify many species (and subspecies) of Lepidoptera. However, some of this variation may be unsuitable for inferring the recent evolutionary history of populations. Genetic data provide an alternative. We examine the morphological and genetic variation within and between British subspecies of Coenonympha tullia (Müller 1764) to test the hypothesis that neutral genetic variation corresponds to morphological variation. We find that most morphological and genetic variation occurs within populations and that those populations designated as subspecies based on morphological characters are not necessarily most closely related for mitochondrial DNA or nuclear DNA (amplified fragment length polymorphisms and allozymes). Thus, the notion that wing spot variation reflects population isolation and therefore genetic differentiation does not hold. Recent molecular surveys of the Swertiinae (Gentianaceae–Gentianeae) revealed unexpected phylogenetic relationships, including polyphyly of the genera Gentianella , Jaeschkea , Lomatogonium and Swertia . To find new non-molecular characters supporting the phylogeny, we examined the exine variation of 73 species of all major lineages of subtribe Swertiinae using environmental scanning electron miscroscopy supplementing older, mainly light microscopical, studies. In contrast to previous studies, we were able to pick out taxa from phylogenetic key positions with particular focus on Swertia . Many distantly related taxa such as parts of Frasera , Gentianopsis , Halenia , Gentianella , Megacodon and several lineages of Swertia share a striate–reticulate or reticulate exine pattern. This is interpreted as the plesiomorphic character state of Swertiinae. There is also considerable variation of derived patterns; for example, different types of microechinate or almost smooth pollen was repeatedly observed in distantly related groups. Another extreme was the ring-shaped reticulation found in a North American species of Gentianopsis . Unfortunately, major relationships as revealed by molecular analyses were rarely supported because of the abundance of the plesiomorphic type and homoplasy even on low taxonomic levels; for example, within Lomatogonium . Exine variation was particularly useful in characterizing independent lineages of Swertia . DNA sequences are currently used to propose primary hypotheses of species delimitation, especially when morphological variability is difficult to assess. In an integrative taxonomy framework, these hypotheses are then compared with other characters, such as morphology or geography, to produce robust species delimitations. For this purpose, the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene has been sequenced for almost 50 specimens of the genus Benthomangelia , a deep-sea marine gastropod genus, collected in the South-West Pacific. Five genetic groups, displaying low and high genetic distances respectively within and between groups, were defined. COI hypotheses were compared with both the results obtained with the independent nuclear 28S gene and with an elliptic Fourier analysis of the shape of the last whorl of the shell. 28S gene analysis confirmed the same well-supported groups as COI, and elliptic Fourier analysis identified several morphological characters that vary similarly to genetic variability.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 696–708.  相似文献

Phylogeographic studies from western Palaearctic have generally focused on species able to disperse and track their emerging suitable habitats after the last ice age. However, data on species whose biogeographical histories differ from this bulk of Palaearctic fauna are scarce. This is clearly the case of some specialized organisms inhabiting inland hypersaline environments, which are likely to have had a wider distribution range during the late Tertiary and may have persisted through the Pleistocene to the present day only constituting relict populations. In this study, we use partial sequences from two mitochondrial genes [16S rRNA (16S) and cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII)] to investigate the phylogeography of the Iberian populations of Mioscirtus wagneri (Orthoptera: Acrididae), a specialized grasshopper exclusively inhabiting hypersaline low grounds. Our results show that M. wagneri exhibits a marked phylogeographical structure, forming three main clades which correspond with populations located in north-east, central–south-east and south-west Iberia. These geographical areas did not share any haplotype, indicating that gene flow between them is absent. Nested clade analyses revealed that these lineages have probably evolved in allopatry and data on sequence divergence suggest population fragmentation from the Early Pleistocene. The reef building vermetid gastropod Dendropoma petraeum inhabits the warmest waters of the Mediterranean Sea and is considered a threatened marine species. The aim of this study was to characterize its genetic structure throughout its whole distribution range using mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data. Because of its sessile adult lifestyle and lack of a pelagic larval stage, we expected a markedly subdivided population structure with limited levels of gene flow. Fragments of the mitochondrial genes cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA (16S), were sequenced, along with the nuclear ribosomal cluster (internal transcribed spacer; ITS) in specimens from 18 localities. Our analyses identified four highly distinct phylogroups separated by a mean divergence of > 14% according to the COI sequence data or > 9% according to 16S, but differing only slightly in morphology. The nuclear data (ITS) indicated a lower substitution rate (divergence among groups of around 1%). These large genetic distances among the four lineages clearly point to the existence of a cryptic species complex within D. petraeum comprising at least four species. Differences in the characteristics of intracapsular larval development and protoconch were also detected among these lineages. Data on patterns of variation within hybrid zones, combined with studies of life history, mate choice, and hybrid performance, allow estimates of the contribution of different pre-zygotic and post-zygotic barriers to reproductive isolation. We examine the role of behavioural barriers to gene exchange in the maintenance of a hybrid zone between North American field crickets Gryllus firmus and Gryllus pennsylvanicus . We consider these barriers in the context of previous studies that documented temporal and ecological isolation and a one-way post-mating incompatibility (i.e. G. firmus females do not produce offspring when they mate only with heterospecific males). Based on no-choice mating experiments in the laboratory, we demonstrate strong behavioural pre-mating barriers between the two species, but no apparent fecundity or fertility costs for G. firmus females when they mate with both conspecific and heterospecific males. Furthermore, we show that G. firmus females do not discriminate between hybrids and conspecifics, whereas G. pennsylvanicus females do. This observation could explain the asymmetric allele introgression observed in the hybrid zone. We also document a failure of heterospecific males to induce normal oviposition in G. firmus females, which may be due to rapid evolution of accessory gland proteins and may serve as an additional barrier to gene exchange.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 390–402.  相似文献

Optimal outbreeding theory predicts fitness benefits to intermediate levels of inbreeding. In the present study, we test for linear (consistent with inbreeding depression) and nonlinear (consistent with optimal outbreeding) effects of inbreeding on reproductive fitness in male and female Drosophila melanogaster . We found linear declines in fitness associated with increased inbreeding for egg-to-adult viability, but not the number of eggs laid or sperm competitive ability. Egg-to-adult viability was also lower in the progeny of inbred males and females mated to unrelated individuals. However, there was no evidence for optimal fitness at intermediate levels of inbreeding for any trait. Females of many species mate multiple times and store transferred sperm in storage organs. The mechanisms underlying sperm release from the stores at fertilization remain poorly understood, although they are central to an understanding of the female influence on post-copulatory male competition. Using double-mated females of the yellow dung fly, we counted the sperm sticking to the surface of deposited eggs of two successive clutches to obtain insight into the physiological processes associated with fertilization. The number of sperm released to fertilize an egg decreased between the first and second clutches, as well as within clutches from early to late eggs. These results indicate that: (1) sperm are lost from the stores over time independent of egg laying and (2) the number of sperm released depends on the amount of sperm stored. The lower number of sperm on eggs of the second clutches was accompanied by a strong increase of the proportion of sperm adhering to the micropyle region, suggesting that sperm use is more efficient and sperm release better controlled when sperm supply is substantially reduced. Female promiscuity is common among mammals but its advantages, particularly for marsupials, remain unclear. Using microsatellite DNA from pouch young of known mothers, we identified the most likely fathers of 25 wild spotted-tailed quolls ( Dasyurus maculatus ) from six litters. We aimed to determine whether young within the same litter had different fathers, and whether breeding success of males was associated with large body mass (consistent with inter-male competition) or scrotal width (consistent with sperm competition). We also explored the possible influence of promiscuity on relatedness within litters. Finally, we used data on paternity and relatedness to make inferences regarding movement and dispersal.
Four litters were sired by more than one male, and three males sired offspring in more than one litter. Known fathers had higher body mass, but not scrotal width, than males of unknown paternity status, suggesting that males may compete for access to females. We used partial sequences of mitochondrial 16S and cytochrome oxidase I genes to perform a phylogenetic study of collared frogs (Anura: Aromobatidae: Mannophryne ), a genus endemic to Venezuela and the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. We analysed 1.2 kb from 13 of the 15 described species of Mannophryne . Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses support the monophyly of Mannophryne . Mannophryne consists of three deeply differentiated clades that split from each other in a relatively short period of time. The diversification of Mannophryne occurred well before the glacial-interglacial periods of the Quaternary. Our data support the taxonomic validity of M. olmonae , a species endemic to Tobago Island. Mannophryne olmonae is more closely related to the continental species Mannophryne riveroi than to the Trinidad island endemic Mannophryne trinitatis .
