This research investigated the feasibility of coarse/fine sand filtration for removing organic materials from turkey processing wastewater. Sand filtration was tested with three organic and hydraulic loadings. Six two-layer sand bioreactors were in three groups, each with 5 cm layer of pea gravel at the bottom to support layers of fine sand (46 cm) and coarse sand (15 cm) to a height of 66 cm. The bioreactors were inoculated with a mixture of 20% (vol/vol) of wastewater lagoon sludge, 40% (vol/vol) of turkey processing wastewater, and 40% (vol/vol) of BOD(5) dilution water before starting the column operation with turkey processing wastewater. The wastewater contained 1270+/-730 mg COD/L and was applied to each sand bioreactor at hydraulic loading rates of 94% during 80 days of column operation at low and medium hydraulic loading rates (132 L/m(2)/day). The removal at the highest hydraulic loading rate (264 L/m(2)/day) declined after the appearance of a black zone in the top layer of fine sand on day 30 for one reactor and day 50 for the other. The sand filtration in this study represents a feasible treatment for turkey processing wastewater and its efficiency and the life span of the process are associated with the extent of hydraulic loading of the sand bioreactors.  相似文献

Fat, oil and grease in wastewater can be difficult to treat because of their slow decomposition. Traditional pretreatment facilities to remove fat, oil and grease from wastewater are increasingly costly. The hypothesis in this study was that pretreatment of animal fat-containing wastewater in sand and sand/gravel filters facilitates the conversion of slowly degradable organic matter measured as the difference between chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) for subsequent biological treatment. The pretreatment was evaluated using simulated turkey-processing wastewater and coarse sand and sand/gravel filters at a constant hydraulic loading rate of 132 L/m2/day. Two types of fixed media reactors were employed: (i) one set with a varying depth of coarse sand, and (ii) the second was similar but with an additional pea gravel cap. The results indicated that the relative removal of COD was slightly improved in the sand bioreactors with a pea gravel cap irrespective of the depth of coarse sand, but partial conversion to BOD5 was not consistently demonstrated. Pea gravel may act as a sieve to entrap organic matter including fat globules from the wastewater. Multiple dosing at the same daily loading rate slightly improved the treatment efficiency of the sand bioreactors. The ratios of influent-COD/effluent-COD were always greater than 1.0 following a change in the dosing frequency after a rest period, suggesting that organic matter, specifically fat globules in this case, was retained by the column matrix.  相似文献

The research examines the potential for bio-clogging in filter packs containing fine sand of the type typically used in extraction wells for pumping leachates containing fine particulate matter, such as cement kiln dust (CKD). Three filter media with different particle sizes were used: 1.7–4.75, 0.35–1.0, and 0.235–0.45 mm. Each sand filter was tested using a leachate recirculating column reactor with a free drainage layer, on top of which was placed the filtration medium which was kept saturated and at a positive hydrostatic head by a 2-l reservoir of leachate. The leachate was collected from a landfill site that had been used for the co-disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) and CKD. The leachate used was filtered by passing through a Whatman GFA filter paper before being added to the reactors in order to eliminate as far as possible the non-biological clogging which might have resulted from the introduction of particulate matter in the form of CKD. The filters and a control experiment were run under anaerobic conditions at 35 °C. The bio-clogging potential was observed by taking differential manometer readings from manometers located in the drainage and reservoir sections of the reactor. No clogging was detected using the coarser of the filter media, but there was some clogging when a finer filter medium was used. Head space gas analysis indicated that methanogenic activity was inhibited and analysis of the liquid phase indicated that the microbial process responsible for removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was principally one of sulphate reduction.  相似文献

The present study aimed to experimentally quantify the influence of a reduction of surface sediment permeability on microbial characteristics and ecological processes (respiration and leaf litter decomposition) occurring in the hyporheic zone (i.e. the sedimentary interface between surface water and groundwater). The physical structure of the water–sediment interface was manipulated by adding a 2-cm layer of coarse sand (unclogged systems) or fine sand (clogged systems) at the sediment surface of slow filtration columns filled with a heterogeneous gravel/sand sedimentary matrix. The influence of clogging was quantified through measurements of hydraulic conductivity, water chemistry, microbial abundances and activities and associated processes (decomposition of alder leaf litter inserted at a depth of 9 cm in sediments, oxygen and nitrate consumption by microorganisms). Fine sand deposits drastically reduced hydraulic conductivity (by around 8-fold in comparison with unclogged systems topped by coarse sand) and associated water flow, leading to a sharp decrease in oxygen (reaching less than 1 mg L−1 at 3 cm depth) and nitrate concentrations with depth in sediments. The shift from aerobic to anaerobic conditions in clogged systems favoured the establishment of denitrifying bacteria living on sediments. Analyses performed on buried leaf litter showed a reduction by 30% of organic matter decomposition in clogged systems in comparison with unclogged systems. This reduction was linked to a negative influence of clogging on the activities and abundances of leaf-associated microorganisms. Finally, our study clearly demonstrated that microbial processes involved in organic matter decomposition were dependent on hydraulic conductivity and oxygen availability in the hyporheic zone.  相似文献

Laboratory investigations were carried out to examine the clogging process in coarse gravel river beds. Field samples taken from the Langeten river in Switzerland show that the intruded fine particles of the flow are deposited in the top layer of the river bed. For lower discharges the decrease of the hydraulic conductivity depends mainly on the dimensionless shear stress of the flow, the concentration of the suspended load, the hydraulic gradient between river and groundwater and the grain-size distribution of the river bed. However, when the armour layer breaks up during high discharges and the whole river bed is mobilized, the deposited fines are flushed downstream and a new layer with an initial maximum hydraulic conductivity is formed. The relationship between the dimensionless shear stress and the hydraulics conductivity is discussed. Changes in the nature of the catchment area or in the river itself which can accelerate the clogging process in the affected river are also discussed.  相似文献

1. We compared microbial biomass (bacteria, fungi, algae) and the activity of extracellular enzymes used in the decomposition of organic matter (OM) among different benthic substrata (leaves, coarse and fine substrata) over one hydrological year in a Mediterranean stream.
2. Microbial heterotrophic biomass (bacteria plus fungi) was generally higher than autotrophic biomass (algae), except during short periods of high light availability in the spring and winter. During these periods, sources of OM shifted towards autochthonous sources derived mainly from algae, which was demonstrated by high algal biomass and peptidase activity in benthic communities.
3. Heterotrophic activity peaked in the autumn. Bacterial and fungal biomass increased with the decomposition of cellulose and hemicellulose compounds from leaf material. Later, lignin decomposition was stimulated in fine (sand, gravel) and coarse (rocks, boulders and cobbles) substrata by the accumulation of fine detritus.
4. The Mediterranean summer drought provoked an earlier leaf fall. The resumption of the water flow caused the weathering of riparian soils and subsequently a large increase in dissolved organic carbon and nitrate, which led to growth of bacteria and fungi.  相似文献

The pattern of microhabitat preferences of Ukrainian brook lamprey Eudontomyzon mariae ammocoetes was examined in two rivers of central Poland: the Pilica River (the Vistula River basin) and the Grabia River (the Odra River basin). A comparison of abiotic factors of the rivers revealed differences in water speed and principal components: PC1 (determining gradient from decreasing medium sand to the increasing share of three fractions of gravel), PC2 (a gradient from the declining share of very coarse and coarse sand fractions to the growing content of fine sand) and PC3 (correlated with an increasing proportion of silt). The sites did not differ significantly in terms of water depth. Relative abundance and frequency of ammocoete occurrence in the Grabia River were higher than in the Pilica River. Only speed, PC1 and PC2 made a significant contribution to the prediction of larval occurrence. Eudontomyzon mariae larvae preferred substrata with a reduced amount of medium sand and increased content of gravel (PC1) as well as with a lower content of coarse sand and higher proportion of fine‐grained sand (PC2). The ammocoetes also preferred areas with a water speed of 0·2 m s?1 but avoided speeds ≥0·6 m s?1. The abundance of E. mariae was affected by water speed, as well as by all PCs. The mean ± s.e. optimal current speed was 0·265 ± 0·007 m s?1, while abundance decreased with increasing amounts of gravel (PC1) and increased with increasing amounts of fine sand and silt in the bottom substratum (PC2 and PC3). Comparison of ammocoete microhabitat use in the Pilica and Grabia Rivers showed the lack of differences in distribution in the preferred values of current speed, PC1 and PC2.  相似文献

A new hybrid reactor, the upflow blanket filter (UBF), which combined on open volume in the bottom two-thirds of the reactor for a sludge blanket and submerged plastic rings (Flexiring, Koch Inc., 235 m(2)/m(3)) in the upper one-third of the reactor volume, was studied. This UBF reactor was operated at 27 degrees C at loading rates varying from 5 to 51 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L d with soluble sugar wastewater (2500 mg COD/L). Maximum removal rates of 34 g COD/L d and CH(4) production rates of 7 vol/vol d [standard temperature and pressure (STP)] were obtained. The biomass activity was about 1.2 g COD/g volatile suspended solids per day. Conversion (based on effluent soluble COD) was over 93% with loading rates up to 26 g COD/L d. At higher loading rates conversion decreased rapidly. The packing was very efficient in retaining biomass.  相似文献

To effectively solve the problem of aquifer clogging in the process of in situ bioremediation of groundwater pollution by micron emulsified vegetable oil (Micron EVO), Nano emulsified vegetable oil (Nano EVO) was prepared to replace conventional micron EVO, and three one-dimensional laboratory columns packed with medium or fine sands were conducted to simulate migration, clogging, and carbon source release of EVO in porous media. Column experiment results show that micron and nano EVO resulted in a 20.40% and 3.20% reduction in permeability of medium sand, respectively. Correspondingly, the interception of micron and nano EVO in medium sand were 28.51% and 20.15%, respectively. Obviously, EVO interception is an important reason for permeability loss, and reducing EVO droplet size can effectively alleviate permeability loss in porous media. The COD ratios (dissolved COD/total COD) of micron and nano EVO in medium sand were 87.61% and 61.95%, respectively. The release effect of nano EVO was better than that of micron EVO. Effective longevity of micron and nano EVO were 243.17 d and 98.80 d, respectively. The effect of fine sand media on EVO indicated nano EVO can be used in a finer granular media, and its longevity can also be extended in this media.  相似文献

This study has contributed to the technology of soil stabilization via biocementation based on microbially induced calcite precipitation. The newly described method of in situ soil stabilization by surface percolation to dry soil under free draining environment is tested for its up-scaling potential. Then, 2-m columns of one-dimensional trials indicated that repeated treatments of fine sand (<0.3 mm) could lead to clogging closed at the injection end, resulting in limited cementation depth of less than 1 m. This clogging problem was not observed in 2 m coarse (>0.5 mm) sand columns, allowing strength varying between 850 to 2067 kPa along the entire 2 m depth. Three-dimensional fine sand cementation trials indicated that relatively homogenous cementation in the horizontal direction could be achieved with 80% of cemented sand cementing to a strength between 2 to 2.5 MPa and to a depth of 20 cm. A simple mathematical model elucidated that the cementation depth was dependent on the infiltration rate of the cementation solution and the in-situ urease activity. The model also correctly predicted that repeated treatments would enhance clogging close to the injection point. Both experimental and simulated results suggested that the surface percolation technology was more applicable for coarse sand.  相似文献

A dynamic model is developed that describes the degradation of volatile acidifying pollutants in biotrickling filters (BTFs) for waste gas purification. Dynamic modelling enables the engineer to predict the clogging rate of a filter bed and the time it takes the BTF to adapt to changes in its inlet concentration. The most important mechanisms that govern the behaviour of the BTF are incorporated in the model. The time scale of the accumulation of biomass in a filter is investigated, and an approach is presented that can be used to estimate how long a BTF can be operated before its packing has to be cleaned. A three-month experiment was carried out to validate the model, using dichloromethane (DCM) as a model acidifying pollutant. Valuable experimental data about biomass accumulation and liquid hold-up in the reactor were obtained with an experimental set-up that allows the continuous registration of the weight of the BTF. The results show that in BTFs eliminating DCM from a waste gas, clogging is not to be expected up to concentrations of several g/m3. Model calculations based on the measurements also suggest that the maximum carbon load that can safely be applied per unit void packing volume should not exceed 0.5-1.6 C mol/(m3. h), depending on the density of the biofilm formed. The model is a good predictor of the elimination of the pollutant in the system, the axial gas and liquid concentration profiles, the axial biomass distribution, and the response of the system upon a stepwise increase in the DCM inlet concentration. The influence of the buffer concentrations in the liquid phase upon the performance of the BTF is investigated.  相似文献

1. Invertebrate bioturbation can strongly affect water‐sediment exchanges in aquatic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to quantify the influence of invertebrates on the physical characteristics of an infiltration system clogged with fine sediment. 2. Two taxa (chironomids and tubificids) with different bioturbation activities were studied in experimental slow infiltration columns filled with sand and gravel and clogged with a 2 cm layer of fine sediment at the surface. We measured the effects of each taxon separately and combined on hydraulic head, water mobility and sediment reworking. 3. The results showed that invertebrates could reduce sediment clogging and this effect was linked to the functional mode of bioturbation of each group. Tubificid worms dug networks of galleries in the fine sediment, creating pathways for water flow, which reduced the clogging of sediment. In contrast, the U‐shaped tubes of chironomids were restricted to the superficial layer of fine sediments and did not modify the hydraulic conductivity of experimental columns. The combination of invertebrates did not show any interactive effects between tubificids and chironomids. The occurrence of 80 tubificids in the combination was enough to maintain the same hydraulic conductivity that 160 worms did in monospecific treatment. 4. The invertebrates like tubificid worms can have a great benefit on functioning of clogged interfaces by maintaining high hydraulic conductivity, which contributes to increased water‐sediment exchanges and stimulates biogeochemical and microbial processes occurring in river sediments.  相似文献

Development of an improved reactor configuration of anaerobic filter was carried out for the elimination of clogging of filter media. The experiments over different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) indicated that the HRT of 12 h was the most appropriate one for the system studied while treating the municipal wastewater, which resulted 90% and 95% BOD and COD reduction, respectively. Reduction up to 95% in suspended solids concentration could be achieved without any pretreatment. The specific biogas yield obtained was 0.35 m(3) CH(4)/kgCODr with 70% of CH(4) content in the biogas generated from the system at the HRT of 12 h. Operational problems such as clogging of filter media were not observed throughout the period of study over 600 d.  相似文献

Utilization of bottom ash from burning of pulverized coal in construction-related applications has received some attention within the last decade. Its use in geotechnical engineering applications is still very limited, however. Within the last few years several studies have been completed to evaluate strength, stiffness, and durability properties of pulverized coal combustion (PCC) bottom ash mixed with various admixtures. Studies have shown that the physical properties of bottom ash obtained from burning of pulverized coal are similar to that of natural sand with particle sizes ranging from fine gravel to fine sand and low percentages of silt and clay sized particles. However, unlike sand, chemical composition of bottom ash results in change of strength and stiffness characteristics of the bottom ash-admixture mixtures with time. In this study, change in strength and stiffness characteristics of Illinois PCC bottom ash and bentonite mixtures with time are evaluated. A series of unconfined compression tests on bottom ash-bentonite mixtures at various curing ages was performed in the laboratory. Results presented show that strength and stiffness of bottom ash-bentonite mixtures changed significantly with time.  相似文献

The ability of vertical flow (VF) constructed wetland systems to treat high-strength (ca. 300 mg L?1 of COD and ca. 300 mg L?1 total-nitrogen) wastewater under tropical climatic conditions was studied during a 5-month period. Nine 0.8-m diameter experimental VF units (depth 0.6 m) were used: three units were planted with Typha angustifolia L., another three units were planted with Cyperus involucratus Rottb and three units were unplanted. Each set of units were operated at hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) of 20, 50 and 80 mm d?1. Cyperus produced more shoots and biomass than the Typha, which was probably stressed because of lack of water. The high evapotranspirative water loss from the Cyperus systems resulted in higher effluent concentrations of COD and total-P, but the mass removal of COD did not differ significantly between planted and unplanted systems. Average mass removal rates of COD, TKN and total-P at a HLR of 80 mm d?1 were 17.8, 15.4 and 0.69 g m?2 d?1. The first-order removal rate constants at a HLR of 80 mm d?1 for COD, TKN and total-P were 49.8, 30.1 and 13.5 m year?1, respectively, which is in the higher range of k-values reported in the literature. The oxygen transfer rates were ca. 80 g m?2 d?1 in the planted systems as opposed to ca. 60 g m?2 d?1 in the unplanted systems. The number of Nitrosomonas was two to three orders of magnitude higher in the planted systems compared to the unplanted systems. Planted systems thus had significantly higher removal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus, higher oxygen transfer rates, and higher quantities of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. None of the systems did, however, fully nitrify the wastewater, even at low loading rates. The vertical filters did not provide sufficient contact time between the wastewater and the biofilm on the gravel medium of the filters probably because of the shallow bed depth (0.6 m) and the coarse texture of the gravel. It is concluded that vertical flow constructed wetland systems have a high capacity to treat high-strength wastewater in tropical climates. The gravel and sand matrix of the vertical filter must, however, be designed in a way so that the pulse-loaded wastewater can pass through the filter medium at a speed that will allow the water to drain before the next dose arrives whilst at the same time holding the water back long enough to allow sufficient contact with the biofilm on the filter medium.  相似文献

During wastewater treatment, biofilm-coated sand particles stratified in a fluidized bed bioreactor (FBB); particles coated by thicker biofilm segregated toward the top of the bed. Stratification was so well developed that at least two co-existing regions of significantly different mean biofilm thickness were visually distinct within the operating FBB. The observed stratification is attributed to differences in forces of drag, buoyancy, shear, and collisional impact, as well as differences of collision rate within the different regions. Particles with thick biofilm (thickness >100 μm) near the top of the bed consumed substrate at significantly lower rates per unit biomass than particles with thin biofilm (10-20 μm) near the bottom of the bed, thereby suggesting that substrate mass-transfer resistance through biofilm may limit biodegradation rates in the upper portion of the FBB. Large agglomerates of biomass floc and sand, which formed at the top of the fluidized bed, and sand particles with thick biofilm were susceptible to washout from the FBB, causing operational and treatment instability. Radial injection of supplemental liquid feed near the top of the bed increased shear and mixing, thereby preventing formation and washout of agglomerates and thickly coated sand particles. Supplemental liquid injection caused the mean specific biomass loading on the sand to increase and also increased the total biomass inventory in the FBB. Rates of biodegradation in the FBB appeared to be limited by penetration of substrates into the biofilm and absorption of oxygen from air into the wastewater. While sand filters are widely used to treat drinking water, the role of sand filter associated microorganisms in water purification has not been extensively studied. In the current investigation, we integrated molecular (based on metagenomic) and physicochemical analyses to elucidate microbial community composition and function in a common sand filter used to treat groundwater for potable consumption. The results revealed that the biofilm developed rapidly within 2 days (reaching ∼1011 prokaryotes per gram) in the sand filter along with abiotic and biotic particulates accumulated in the interstitial spaces. Bacteria (up to 90%) dominated the biofilm microbial community, with Alphaproteobacteria being the most common class. Thaumarchaeota was the sole phylum of Archaea, which might be involved in ammonia oxidation. Function annotation of metagenomic datasets revealed a number of aromatic degradation pathway genes, such as aromatic oxygenase and dehydrogenase genes, in the biofilm, suggesting a significant role for microbes in the breakdown of aromatic compounds in groundwater. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification pathways were confirmed as the primary routes of nitrogen removal. Dissolved heavy metals in groundwater, e.g. Mn2+ and As3+, might be biologically oxidized to insoluble or easily adsorbed compounds and deposited in the sand filter. Our study demonstrated that the role of the microbial community in the sand filter treatment system are critical to effective water purification in drinking water.  相似文献

A column reactor, in which the bottom two-thirds were occupied by a sludge blanket and the upper one-third by submerged clay rings, was evaluated using slaughterhouse wastewater as substrate. The reactor was operated at 35°C at loading rates varying from 5 g to 45 g chemical oxygen demand (COD) 1–1 × day–1 at an influent concentration of 2450 mg COD 1–1. A maximum substrate removal rate of 32 g COD 1–1 × day–1, coupled with a methane production rate of 6.91 × 1–1 × day–1 (STP), was obtained. This removal rate is significantly higher than those previously reported. The rate of substrate utilization by the biomass was 1.22 g COD (g volatile suspended solids)–1 day–1. COD removal was over 96% with loading rates up to 25 g COD 1–1 × day–1, at higher loading rates performance decreased rapidly. It was found that the filter element of the reactor was highly efficient in retaining biomass, leading to a biomass accumulation yield coefficient of 0.029 g volatile suspended solids g–1 COD, higher than reported previously for either upflow anaerobic sludge-blanket reactors or anaerobic filters operating independently.  相似文献
