The verrucarum group of phlebotomine sand flies includes vectors of Leishmania spp. and Bartonella bacilliformis, and from the perspective of public health is considered as one of the most important groups of neotropical phlebotomine sand flies. Due to marked morphological similarity among species constituting this group, the identification based on conventional taxonomic characters can be difficult. Consequently, the verrucarum group has been the focus of numerous taxonomic comparisons which have included the following methods: chaetotaxy, morphometry, larval spiracular system, chorionic structure, morphology of the genital atrium, cytogenetics, morphological phylogenetics, isoenzymes, random amplified polymorphic DNA, cuticular hydrocarbons, DNA probes, and nuclear and mitochondrial nucleotide sequences. Based on morphological characters of the male terminalia, the verrucarum group has been divided in four series, i.e., verrucarum, serrana, townsendi and pia. Since the revision of the group made by Young and Duncan in 1994, ten new species, principally of Andean origin, have been assigned to 3 of the series verrucarum (L. maranonensis, L. cajamarcensis, L. antioquiensis, L. falcaorum), serrana (L. robusta, L. guilvardae) and pia (L. suapiensis, L. tihuiliensis, L. tocaniensis, L. limafalcaoae). The total number of verrucarum group members is now 40. Explanations for this diversity of species include the isolation of ancestral populations in refugia of humid forest during the quaternary period, the Andean cordilleras as geographical barrier, and the appearance of the Isthmus of Panama. Biology systematics and evolution of the verrucarum group is reviewed with emphasis on the 19 species extant in Colombia.  相似文献

Cytogenetic characteristics were established for five native species of phlebotomine sand flies (Lutzomyia, series townsendi, verrucarum group): Lutzomyia longiflocosa, Lutzomyia townsendi, Lutzomyia spinicrassa, Lutzomyia torvida and Lutzomyia youngi. Karyotypes and chromosomal morphometry were compared. Using the squash technique, brain tissues from late 4th instar larvae provided the necessary mitotic chromosomes. Chromosomal measurements were made on the following chromosomal characteristics: short arm, long arm, arm ratio, total length, relative length, centromeric index and relative length average of chromosomes. Chromosomes were classified according to their morphometry and position of the centromere. The taxonomic distance was calculated, and the relationships among the species displayed in a phenogram. All five species possessed four pairs of chromosomes as diploid number (2N = 8). None of the karyotypes indicated presence of heteromorphic chromosomes. Statistical analysis of the morphometric data showed highly significant differences among the chromosomes pairs of the five species. However, the total length of the genome was very similar, with the exception of L. youngi. In conclusion, these closely related species were distinguishable at cytological level.  相似文献

Potential vectors of Leishmania braziliensis Vianna were assessed at four study sites in the mountainous Valle del Cauca, western Colombia, from March to June 1989. In an active focus of transmission at 1450 m altitude, a coffee plantation at Versalles, there were high densities of antropophilic phlebotomines: Lutzomyia columbiana (Ritorcelli & Van Ty) and Lu.townsendi (Ortiz), both in the verrucarum species group, and of Lu.pia (Fairchild & Hertig). At a comparable altitude in a forest reserve at Yotoco where leishmaniasis is unknown, Lu.pia was the prevalent species and Lu.townsendi was absent. In two localities at 1150 m altitude, there were plentiful Lu.lichyi (Floch & Abonnenc) plus both species in the verrucarum group, but Lu.pia was absent. One of these localities, a coffee plantation at Villa Hermosa where a leishmaniasis outbreak occurred in 1986, was compared with a leishmaniasis-free, partly wooded nature reserve at Mateguadua. No natural infections of Leishmania were found in a total of 1896 wild-caught female phlebotomines belonging to at least seven species. It remains unclear why Leishmaniasis transmission is associated with coffee plantations in this part of Colombia. Laboratory-bred Lu.lichyi females were invariably autogenous, and blood-seeking females of this species were always parous. Parity rates in wild-caught females of other species were 55% Lu.pia, 24% Lu.columbiana and 14% Lu.townsendi. Female Lutzomyia infected artificially with Le.braziliensis promastigotes developed peripylarian infections. Higher proportions of Lu.townsendi (96%) and Lu.columbiana (78%) became infected but these species developed lower rates of stomodaeal infections (P less than 0.1) than Lu.lichyi (37%) or Lu.pia (44%).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The phlebotomine sand fly fauna of two coffee plantations in a Leishmania-endemic area of Norte de Santander, Colombia was studied. Regular insect collections using a variety of methods were made for three and a half years. Information was obtained on diurnal resting sites, host range and seasonal abundance for 17 species, of which five (Lutzomyia spinicrassa, Lu. serrana, Lu. shannoni, Lu. ovallesi and Lu. gomezi) were far more numerous than the others, anthropophilic and present throughout the year. The behaviour of these and the remaining 12 species is discussed in relation to their potential role in transmission of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis in the area.  相似文献

The WHO method for determining insecticide resistance was standardized for several species of Lutzomyia sand flies under laboratory and field conditions. The biological assays were applied solely to optimize the conditions for the control, i.e., without insecticide, and to estimate mortality due to handling or other unfavorable conditions. Adult female flies from 3 laboratory colonies and one field strain were tested: two laboratory strains of Lutzomyia longipalpis, one laboratory strain of Lutzomyia serrana and one field-collected strain of Lutzomyia quasitownsendi. The WHO method was compared with one modified in which, during the post-exposure period, the recommended plain tube apparatus was replaced with a plastic container layered with damp plaster of Paris. Three paper substrate types were compared under each condition: olive oil additive, silicon oil additive and plain paper. The measured variable was percent mortality in 24 h. For the WHO protocol, the L. longipalpis strains indicated a 0-10% mortality, L. serrana 20-80% and L. quasitownsendi 10-50%. With the modified WHO apparatus, the average mortality was < 4% for all species. No significant differences were observed among the paper treatments. These results indicate a strong species-specific effect of post-exposure conditions on sand flies. To establish baseline levels of insecticide resistance in Lutzomyia sand flies, the WHO method is recommended only for L. longipalpis, and the modified method for L. serrana, L. quasitownsendi and closely related species.  相似文献

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC, USA) has proposed a simplified method for the determinations of insecticide resistance in adult mosquitoes, using 250 ml Wheaton bottles containing measured dosages. Insects are transferred into the bottle for 1 hour and monitored for mortality at regular intervals. In standardizing the CDC method for use with phlebotomine sand flies, effects of the solvent without insecticide were evaluated. Two colonized sand fly vector species were used: Lutzomyia longipalpis (F50 and F54) and Lutzomyia serrana (F17). Groups of 10 to 24 unfed females 1-3 days old were transferred for 1 h to Wheaton bottles with the following pretreatment: (1) without additive, (2) 0.5 ml of acetone, or (3) 1.0 ml of acetone. Three to 5 replicates were undertaken for each condition and each species. In the control bottles, the insects rested quietly and after 1 h appeared normal. In bottles with 0.5 and 1.0 ml acetone, a repellent effect was observed in L. longipalpis and L. serrana within the first 10 min. A small proportion of the L. serrana became prostrate, but recovered quickly after removal from the bottle. Field test performed with Lutzomyia quasitownsendi produced results simialar to those of the L. serrana colony flies. The insecticide bioassays were performed with L. longipalpis (F60) flies. Females were exposed to three graded doses of lambdacyhalothrin (10, 50 and 100 micrograms/bottle), and mortality was recorded at five-minute intervals. Regression lines for the 3 concentrations were compared within the context of the CDC method. The advantages of the CDC method over the WHO protocols were four: lower cost, fewer insects required, an entire group of insects exposed to the same surface, and ease of field use.  相似文献

Lutzomyia spinicrassa is a vector of Leishmania braziliensis in Colombia. This sand fly has a broad geographical distribution in Colombia and Venezuela and it is found mainly in coffee plantations. Baseline biological growth data of L. spinicrassa were obtained under experimental laboratory conditions. The development time from egg to adult ranged from 59 to 121 days, with 12.74 weeks in average. Based on cohorts of 100 females, horizontal life table was constructed. The following predictive parameters were obtained: net rate of reproduction (8.4 females per cohort female), generation time (12.74 weeks), intrinsic rate of population increase (0.17), and finite rate of population increment (1.18). The reproductive value for each class age of the cohort females was calculated. Vertical life tables were elaborated and mortality was described for the generation obtained of the field cohort. In addition, for two successive generations, additive variance and heritability for fecundity were estimated.  相似文献

A new scheme of altitudinal and latitudinal vegetation zonation is proposed for eastern Asia. The latitudinal patterns of mountain vegetation zonation show a clear boundary at ca. 20°–30° N. For the tropical mountains south of 20° N, the altitudinal series includes tropical lowland, tropical lower montane, and tropical upper montane zones. For the temperate mountains north of 30° N, the series includes temperate lowland, temperate lower montane, and temperate upper montane zones. The mountains located between 20° and 30° N show a transitional zonation pattern; the lower two zones are comparable to the lower two of the tropical zonation (tropical lowland and tropical lower montane), and the upper two zones are comparable to those of the temperate zonation (temperate lower montane and temperate upper montane). The tropical upper montane zone is not found north of 20°–30° N, while the tropical lower montane zone reaches down to sea level and constitutes the temperate lowland zone. Thus the zonation between 20° and 30° N includes tropical lowland, tropical lower montane/temperate lowland, temperate lower montane, and temperate upper montane zones. The latitudinal series of lowland rain forests follows the scheme of climatic division into tropical, subtropical/warm-temperate, cool-temperate and cold-temperate, with a shift of the respective life forms, evergreen, evergreen notophyllous, deciduous, and evergreen needle-leaved. The tropical lower montane forest can be correlated to the horizontal subtropical/ warm-temperate zone. The temperate altitudinal and latitudinal zonations above 30° N are correlated and show an inclined parallel pattern from high altitudes in the south to low altitudes down to sea level in the north.  相似文献

We describe a multivariate metric comparison of three sandfly species showing strong differences in size, which questions the geographical distribution of one of them. Two species are represented by a single population (L. robusta and L. guilvardae) and one by two populations (L. serrana). All of them belong to the series serrana (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae). The morphometric data confirm that L. guilvardae is a distinct species. However, they suggest that L. robusta and L. serrana in Ecuador are the same taxon, and that it is distinguishable from the population of L. serrana in Bolivia. A multilocus enzyme electrophoresis analysis comparing L. serrana in Bolivia and L. robusta in Ecuador adds further evidence that these two populations are distinct species. Thus, our data seem to indicate that, in Ecuador, the population previously identified as L. serrana is actually the same species as the allopatric population previously identified as L. robusta. Accepting L. serrana in Ecuador as small-sized L. robusta, the resulting geographic distribution of this latter becomes in closer agreement with ecology and epidemiology.  相似文献

The phlebotomine sandfly fauna of traditional (shaded) and intensified (unshaded) coffee plantations in Colombia was sampled by a variety of methods and the species composition and density under the two systems compared. Twenty species of Lutzomyia sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) were collected, of which eight were found only in the 'Coffee Axis' ('Eje Cafetero') of the departments of Caldas, Risaralda and Quindio, six were exclusive to the department of Norte de Santander and six occurred in both regions. Four species were collected only in traditional plantations and two exclusively in intensified ones. At least 13 species occurred in both plantation types. Fifteen species are opportunistic man-biters and eight are suspected vectors of leishmaniasis caused by Le. braziliensis, Le. panamensis or Le. mexicana. Seven species were collected inside houses and may be involved in intradomiciliary transmission of Leishmania. The dominant species in Norte de Santander was Lu. spinicrassa, which made up 93.8% of all the sandflies collected in this department. This species was absent from the Eje Cafetero and a number of others among the 15 recorded there might be responsible for Leishmania transmission in this region, including Lu. trapidoi, Lu. yuilli, Lu. gomezi, L. hartmanni and Lu. ovallesi. Sandfly population densities were significantly higher in traditional plantations than in intensified ones. Residents of traditional plantations were able to describe sandflies in significantly more detail than those of intensified plantations, based on seven basic characteristics related to the appearance and biting behaviour of the insects.  相似文献

Geographical patterns of altitudinal zonation, floristic composition, and structural features of tropical montane rain forests were examined along latitudinal gradients in south and east Asia. On equatorial mountains, the tropical montane rain forests occur above 1000 m. Toward middle latitudes, they come farther down and reach sea level at c. 35° N. Thus, the forests are equivalent to the subtropical rain forests of the latitudinal, horizontal zonation series. They exhibit gradual changes in floristic composition and structure along both altitudinal and latitudinal gradients. On equatorial mountains, they are divided into three types, i.e. tropical lower montane, upper montane, and subalpine forests. The three tree regeneration types, having emergent, sporadic and inverse-J type stem-diameter class frequency distributions, coexist in the lower montane forests, but the upper and subalpine forests display only the inverse-J type species with a few species of the sporadic type. Toward the northern latitudinal limit, the distinction between the three tropical montane forest zones in equatorial mountains becomes less clear. This can be explained by temperature conditions: on equatorial mountains, a temperature sum of 85° C months which controls the upper limit of the lower montane forests, and a coldest month mean temperature of-1° C which controls the evergreen broad-leaved trees, appear at c. 2500 and c. 4000 m respectively. The altitudinal range between 2500 m and 3800 m, which is the upper forest limit, is covered by upper montane and subalpine forests. On the other hand, at the latitudinal northern limit, the tropical upper montane and subalpine forests cannot exist because the above mentioned two temperature conditions occur at nearly the same point. Thus, at the northern latitudinal limit of the tropical montane forests, the three zones of equatorial mountains amalgamate into a single subtropical lowland forest community. This is due to the seasonal temperature climate in middle latitudes in, e.g., central Japan and central China.A part of this paper was presented as an oral presentation at the Vth International Congress of Ecology, Yokohama 23–30.8.1990.  相似文献

The value of Colombian phlebotomine eggs for species determination was studied with a scanning electron microscope. The species diversity and medical importance of the verrucarum group were the bases to select Lutzomyia youngi, Lutzomyia evansi, Lutzomyia columbiana and Lutzomyia longiflocosa. The egg surface was poligonal. Lutzomyia youngi, and Lutzomyia columbiana had pentagonal or hexagonal patterns; Lutzomyia evansi elongated polygons and Lutzomyia longiflocosa irregular polygonal sculpturing, frequently rectangular. Egg scanning electron microscopy is reliable to identify species of the verrucarum group.  相似文献

The eggshell fine structure of five sand fly species from Venezuela belonging to the genus Lutzomyia (L. migonei, L. ovallesi, L. absonodonta, L. gomezi and L. panamensis) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The chorionic sculpturing of L. migonei, L. ovallesi, L. absonodonta and L. gomezi was characterized by series of columns arranged in palisade to form sinuous ridges. In inter-ridge areas, the basal layer was covered with fibrous material. The outer chorion of L. panamensis had a pattern known as "mountain- or volcano-like". The morphology of the posterior pole and aeropyle had a common structure in the five species, with some species-specific characters. The eggshell features of the five species are compared with those of other phlebotomine sand flies.  相似文献

An altitudinal transect study of the vegetation on Mount Kinabalu,Borneo   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
K. Kitayama 《Plant Ecology》1992,102(2):149-171
A quantitative transect analysis of altitudinal sequences of forest canopy species from 600 to 3400 m asl on Mt. Kinabalu (4101 m), Borneo, resulted in four discrete altitudinal vegetation zones. These were made up of mutually exclusive species groups for lowland (<1200 m asl), lower montane (1200 to 2000–2350 m asl), upper montane (2000–2350 to 2800 m asl), and subalpine (2800 to the forest line, 3400 m asl) zones. Zonal soil types were correlated with the vegetation zones. In upslope sequence, these were: lowland Oxisols, montane Histosol/Spodosol complex, and subalpine Inceptisols. The highest contents of organic carbon, extractable phosphorus, and exchangeable magnesium and potassium were recorded in the lower and upper montane zones. The upper boundaries of the lowland, upper montane and subalpine zones coincided with thermal thresholds of latitudinal bioclimatic zones: 18°C TMIN (Köppen's tropical), WI 85 (Kira's warm temperate), and WI 45 (Kira's cool temperate), respectively. The upper limit of the lower montane zone was correlated with an abrupt increase of water surplus estimated from the annual rainfall minus annual potential evaporation. These climatic characteristics appear to define ecological altitudinal turnover points, so called critical altitudes, where groups of associated species are displaced by other groups.Abbreviations asl = above sea level - DBH = diameter at breast height - PHQ = Park headquarters - TMAX = Mean daily maximum air temperature - TMIN = Mean daily minimum air temperature - TWINSPAN = Two-way indicator species analysis - WI = Warmth index  相似文献

We studied the natural infection of Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) sp. with Leishmania in endemic foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Paria peninsula, state of Sucre, Venezuela. Sand flies were collected between March 2001 and June 2003, using Shannon light-traps and human bait. Of the 1291 insects captured, only two species of phlebotomines were identified: L. ovallesi (82.75%) and L. gomezi (17.42%). A sample of the collected sand flies (51 pools of 2-12 individuals) were analyzed by using a multiplex-PCR assay for simultaneous detection of New Word Leishmaniaand Viannia subgenera. The results showed a total of 8 pools (15.68%) infected; of these, 7 were L. ovallesi naturally infected with L. braziliensis (2 pools) and L. mexicana (5 pools) and 1 pool of L. gomezi infected by L. braziliensis.  相似文献

Under experimental conditions, the developmental pattern of Leishmania garnhami in its vector Lutzomyia townsendi, was established following daily dissections between the 1st and the 12th day post-infection. L. garnhami succeeded in establishing initial infections in any of the gut regions and in the Malpighian tubules of infected sandflies. Similar behavior was observed in infected Lu. longipalpis. The distribution of L. garnhami in the digestive tract of infected flies, is different to that observed in species of the L. mexicana and L. braziliensis complexes. The susceptibility of Lu. townsendi to infection by L. mexicana, L. braziliensis and L. garnhami is discussed. It is concluded that L. garnhami, according to its behaviour in the vector, must be considered different from the l. mexicana complex, and that its developmental pattern differs from that of the Suprapylaria, because it invades the hind triangle and also from the species of the Peripylaria by its invasion of the Malpighian tubules.  相似文献

In north-central Venezuela Lutzomyia gomezi and Lu. ovallesi are the main endophilic/anthropophilic species of phlebotomine sandflies implicated as vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Lutzomyia ovallesi has been found infected with Leishmania braziliensis (1.2%) and less often with Le. mexicana (0.07%), while Le. braziliensis infections have also been found in Lu. gomezi (0.47%). We investigated population densities of these sandflies using two sampling methods with four series of collections between January 1991 and March 1995 at El Ingenio, Miranda State. All-night outdoor collections from a Shannon trap were correlated with indoor collections from CDC light–traps by linear regression, which proved to be statistically significant for both species. Estimated numbers of female sandflies per house per night were found to be proportional to monthly precipitation (i.e. rainfall), with a lag time of seven months for Lu. ovallesi and of six months for Lu. gomezi . Predominance of Lu. ovallesi over Lu. gomezi ( c. 10 :1 ) was observed throughout the year, with the number of infected females estimated as 0.043 ± 0.047 Lu. ovallesi and 0.0085 ± 0.0124 Lu. gomezi per CDC trap per house per night (ratio ∼ 5:1). The mean rate of new CL cases per house per year and sandfly abundance were correlated by linear regression, showing a statistically significant relationship for Lu. ovallesi but not for Lu. gomezi . The negative intercept indicated that, on average, the CDC trap density exceeds 800 Lu. ovallesi females/house/year before new CL cases occur at El Ingenio.  相似文献

Abstract. Changes in appearance of the accessory glands (AG), ovaries (OV) and the absence or presence of crease marks at the edges of the genital atrium armature (GA) were compared as methods to age-grade female laboratory-bred (Lutzomyia migonei) and wild-caught (Lu.youngi, Lu.spinicrassa, Lu.ovallesi) Neotropical sandflies.
Dissections at different physiological stages revealed that all parous and high proportions of nulliparous (4/38 unmated, 12/12 mated) females showed similar residual AG secretions. Hence AG appearance (nullipars with AG translucent, versus yellowish opaque granulated AG previously regarded as signs of parousness) is unreliable for age-grading.
Readily recognizable changes in both GA (98% creased) and the OV (100% yellowish with loose ovarioles) indicated that these organs could be employed to discriminate between nulliparous and parous females. Despite finding one misdiagnosed female (a nullipar having creased GA indicative of parity), the GA method of age-grading is recommended because females may be examined satisfactorily at any stage of the gonotrophic cycle. Moreover, the GA characteristics of pickled or dry preserved sandflies as well as fresh slide-mounted specimens can be determined easily.
Among sixty-five wild-caught Lutzomyia females dissected (mostly Lu.spinicrassa and Lu.youngi) , the proportions of specimens yielding preparations suitable for examination were 97% for GA, 89% for OV, but only 58% for AG, which reinforces GA as the preferred character for age-grading.  相似文献
