Trichomes are an important physical resistance mechanism of plants, as they reduce insect herbivore movement, feeding, and digestion. However, we know little about how trichomes influence herbivore distributions and populations. We conducted laboratory and field experiments to evaluate the preferences of Platyprepia virginalis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) caterpillars to natural and manipulated densities of trichomes on their primary food, Lupinus arboreus Sims (Fabaceae). We then conducted field surveys to determine whether variation in trichome density among lupine bushes affected caterpillar spatial distribution on the landscape. Platyprepia virginalis caterpillars preferred lupine leaves with fewer trichomes in choice and no‐choice experiments. In the field, caterpillar feeding damage was found more often on leaves with fewer trichomes. These preferences scaled up to the level of bushes in the landscape such that more caterpillars were found on bushes with lower trichome densities than on bushes with higher trichome densities. This is one of few studies to show the potential for trichome density to influence herbivore population size and distribution in a natural system at a landscape level. The results are consistent with trichomes functioning as a resistance mechanism with consequences for herbivore choice, performance, and distribution.  相似文献

The growth of tree lupins was investigated in two experiments. In the first, two ages of plant, 4-wk-old seedlings and 1-year-old plants, were transplanted into a ryegrass sward in an upland environment. Growth, in terms of leaf production, branching and stem elongation, was measured over two successive growing seasons. Plant dry matter and nutrient contents were determined at the beginning and end of each growing season. In the first summer, the rate of production of new leaves on the main stem of seedling plants averaged 1.8 leaves per wk and main stem length increased from 5 to 67 cm. On older plants, where floral apices had been initiated on main and primary stems, there was a 3–10 fold increase in secondary branch length. In the second season, there was no effect of plant age on rates of leaf appearance or stem extension; dry matter production was higher than in the first season. In the second experiment, the effect of removal of 0%, 50% or 100% of fully expanded leaves on the subsequent growth of 23-wk-old plants was investigated. During the 7-wk growth period, defoliation promoted the rate of production of mature leaves, and area and dry weight of new laminae were slightly higher in defoliated plants. Defoliation did not affect the concentrations of N, P or K in the new laminae, but P and K concentrations in petioles of defoliated plants were significantly higher than those in intact plants. The results from the experiments are discussed in relation to the potential use of tree lupins as nurse species and biomass crops in hill and upland environments of the UK.  相似文献

Across large spatial scales, plants often exhibit genetically based differentiation in traits that allow adaptation to local sites. At smaller spatial scales, sharp boundaries between edaphic conditions also can create strong gradients in selection that counteract gene flow and result in local adaptation. Few studies, however, have examined the degree to which continuous populations of perennial plants exhibit genetically based differentiation in life-history traits over small spatial scales. We quantified the degree of genetically based differentiation in adaptive traits among bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus) from nearby dune and grassland sites (sites separated by < 0.75 km) that formed part of a larger continuous population of L. arboreus. We also investigated the spatial genetic structure of bush lupine by examining how genetic structure differed between seeds and juvenile plants that were less than two years old. We calculated F-statistics from gel electrophoresis of 10 polymorphic loci. We then used these values to infer levels of gene flow. To examine differentiation in adaptive traits, we created full-sibling/half-sibling families of lupine within each area and established reciprocal common gardens at each site. Across two years, we measured canopy volume, flowering time, seed set, and mortality of progeny planted in each garden. Spatial genetic structure among seeds was virtually nonexistent (F(ST) = 0.002), suggesting that gene flow between the three areas could be quite high. However, genetic structure increased 20-fold among juvenile plants (F(ST) = 0.041). We found strong evidence for fine-scale genetically based differentiation and local adaptation in adaptive traits such as plant size, flowering phenology, fecundity, and mortality. Thus, it is likely that strong but differing selection regimes within each area drive spatial differentiation in lupine life-history traits.  相似文献

We explored consequences of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in herbivory on the survival, growth, and reproduction of the Californian native dune thistle, Cirsium occidentale, in coastal and inland sites, for 2 years. We assessed the relative impacts of insect and mammalian herbivores and compared the relative importance of herbivory in coastal and inland habitats and among locations with different microclimates across a coastal dune. Effects of insect and mammalian herbivores were tested with a combination of insecticidal spray and cage exclusion treatments in a factorial experiment at the coastal site. Mammalian herbivores strongly affected the population dynamics of C. occidentale in both years, and their effects were augmented by fungal infection (1991), herbivory by stem-borers (1990) and, to a lesser extent, by insect seed predators in both years. Mammals caused most plant deaths, but the mammal species responsible differed among sites. Rabbit herbivory altered the vegetative growth of coastal thistles and significantly modified other key aspects of Cirsium demography, including growth rate and timing of reproduction. Small, uncaged plants grazed by rabbits took at least 1 year longer to mature than did caged plants. Larvae of Pyrausta subsequalis were the only insects that killed established plants. In 1990 and 1991, the numbers of insects damaging seed heads before dispersal were low, but were sufficient to cause receptacle and seed damage. The number of mature, undamaged seeds (and percent successful seed production) was reduced significantly only for heads infested by fungi near the ocean in 1991: the fungus occurred in 37% of heads and caused a 77% reduction in mature seeds. The possibility of communication between plants was proposed nearly 20 years ago, although previous demonstrations have suffered from methodological problems and have not been widely accepted. Here we report the first rigorous, experimental evidence demonstrating that undamaged plants respond to cues released by neighbors to induce higher levels of resistance against herbivores in nature. Sagebrush plants that were clipped in the field released a pulse of an epimer of methyl jasmonate that has been shown to be a volatile signal capable of inducing resistance in wild tobacco. Wild tobacco plants with clipped sagebrush neighbors had increased levels of the putative defensive oxidative enzyme, polyphenol oxidase, relative to control tobacco plants with unclipped sagebrush neighbors. Tobacco plants near clipped sagebrush experienced greatly reduced levels of leaf damage by grasshoppers and cutworms during three field seasons compared to unclipped controls. This result was not caused by an altered light regime experienced by tobacco near clipped neighbors. Barriers to soil contact between tobacco and sagebrush did not reduce the difference in leaf damage although barriers that blocked air contact negated the effect. Both induced and maternal effects may create delayed negative feedback on the population growth of herbivorous insects. I tested for these effects in a chronically dense population of tussock moths (Orgyia vetusta) feeding on bush lupines (Lupinus arboreus). Experimental bushes received different realistic levels of defoliation by tussock moths in the preceding year, and experimental moth larvae came from mothers that had experienced either high or low levels of crowding as larvae in the previous year. Weight of female moths at pupation was not affected by prior foliar damage, and showed only a weak (12%) effect of maternal crowding. Rates of early larval disappearance, from aerial dispersal (ballooning) or other causes, were unaffected by either foliar damage or maternal crowding, and were very low except when larvae were placed on dead bushes. These results help to explain why the tussock moth population has maintained high densities at the study site for >10 years.  相似文献

Sporadic patchy die-off of bush lupine, Lupinus arboreus, has long been known. We describe in detail a series of these incidents on the central California coast, based upon observational and comparative evidence. Stands of thousands of plants die, while nearby mature plants live on. In some sites, repeated die-off followed by regeneration from the seed bank has led to the cover and density of this woody, perennial plant fluctuating widely over the 40 year period for which records exist. Root damage by caterpillars of the ghost moth or swift Hepialus californicus (Lepidoptera, Hepialidae) is a major cause of individual bush death and a probable cause of die-off of stands of lupine. Hidden from view underground, a few of these insects readily kill a juvenile or young mature plant by girdling and reaming-out roots. The mass mortality of L. arboreus that we observed involved heavy root damage by these caterpillars in evenaged stands of plants in their first (1.5-year-old) or second (2.5-year-old) flowering season. The injured plants set seed before dying. Older, larger bush lupines better withstood root damage. In plants aged 3 or more years, damage and mortality were correlated with the intensity of ghost moth caterpillars in the roots. At the highest intensity (mean = 37.5, maximum = 62 caterpillars/root), a stand of large, old L. arboreus suffered 41% mortality; 45% of root cambium (median value) was destroyed by feeding caterpillars. Mass death of mature L. arboreus was not correlated with folivory, and leaf damage ranged from nil to moderate in instances of die-off. The western tussock moth, Orgyia vetusta, accounted for the highest levels of folivory, but this insect was rare when die-offs occurred. The lowest lupine mortality rates in our study occurred where tussock caterpillar intensities were high and where plants were repeatedly defoliated by this insect. However, experimental defoliation by high, but realistic, intensities of tussock moth caterpillars resulted in some mortality of mature bushes, and the combined effects of leaf and root herbivory have yet to be assessed. In its natural range on the California coast, bush lupine has several additional species of insect herbivores that can be locally abundant and injurious to the plant, although none is associated with die-off. Subterranean natural enemies of ghost moth caterpillars may play a role in the patchy waxing and waning of this shrub. Locally, a new species of entomophagous nematode (Heterorhabditis sp.) cause high mortality in the soil, before ghost moth caterpillars have entered the root. This natural enemy may thus afford lupines protection from heavy underground herbivory.  相似文献

Summary A factorial field experiment was designed to test the effects of small mammals and above- and below-ground invertebrates on plant species richness and composition in native tallgrass prairie at Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, northeast Kansas. Over a 4-year period, Microtus ochrogaster densities were maintained by live-trapping in fenced plots, and invertebrate levels were reduced using the pesticides carbaryl for above-ground invertebrates and an organophosphate (isofenphos) for belowground invertebrates. ANOVA according to a split-plot design of plant species biomass data harvested in 1984 and 1986 revealed few significant effects of either small mammal densities or pesticide application. Of 54 species harvested from both sample dates, only 10 were significantly affected by either treatment. Analysis of species richness according to 8 life-form classes provided a clearer pattern of response than did biomass either by species or life-form class. For example, numbers of C4 grasses were reduced by increasing small mammal densities, whereas numbers of C4 annual forbs were lowest when above-ground herbivory was reduced. While consumers have been shown to have strong effects on successional communities, the few significant results observed in this study suggests that the manipulated levels of small mammals and insects had few effects on a mature tallgrass prairie.Deceased May, 1986  相似文献

The effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and increased wet N deposition on leaf quality and insect herbivory were evaluated in nine model ecosystems composed of 7-year-old spruce trees (Picea abies) and three understorey species established on natural forest soil. Each model ecosystem was grown in a simulated montane climate, and was exposed to one of three CO2 concentrations (280, 420, and 560 μl l−1), and to one of three levels of N deposition (0, 30, and 90 kg ha−1 year−1) for 3 years. In the 3rd year of the experiment second to third instars of the nun moth (Lymantria monacha) were allowed to feed directly on current-year needles of top canopy branches of each tree for 12 days. Specific leaf area (SLA), water content, and N concentration decreased in needles exposed to elevated CO2, whereas the concentrations of starch, condensed tannins, and total phenolics increased. Increased N deposition had no significant effect on SLA, and water content, but the concentrations of starch, condensed tannins, and total phenolics decreased, and sugar and N concentrations increased. Despite higher relative consumption rates (RCRs) larvae consumed 33% less N per unit larval biomass and per day at the two high CO2 treatments, compared to those feeding on 280 μl l−1-needles, but they maintained similar N accumulation rates due to increased N utilization efficiencies (NUE). However, over the 12-day experimental period larvae gained less N overall and reached a 35% lower biomass in the two high-CO2 treatments compared to those at 280 μl l−1. The effects of increased N deposition on needle quality and insect performance were generally opposite to those of CO2 enrichment, but were lower in magnitude. We conclude that altered needle quality in response to elevated CO2 will impair the growth and development of L. monacha larvae. Increasing N deposition may mitigate these effects, which could lead to altered insect herbivore distributions depending on regional patterns of N deposition. Plant stress and larval performance of a dipterous gall former   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
L. De Bruyn 《Oecologia》1995,101(4):461-466
According to the plant vigour hypothesis, galling insects should respond positively and perform better on vigorous plants or plant parts, the opposite of the predictions of the plant stress hypothesis. I carried out field experiments to analyse the effects of sustained abiotic stress on the interactions between the common reed (Phragmites australis) and a gall-forming fly (Lipara lucens). The reed shoot diameter (a measure of plant vigour) is strongly affected by environmental conditions, where dry and/or nutrient-poor habitats produce thinner (stressed) shoots. L. lucens gall density is negatively correlated with shoot diameter. In a survival experiment with a wide range of shoot diameters, larval mortality was also highly correlated with shoot quality. Gall formation was higher on thinner, stressed shoots. An analysis of the gall tissues revealed that galls induced by L. lucens contain a high amount of a nutrient-rich feeding tissue. The impact of L. lucens is higher on thinner shoots. The results of this study showed that L. lucens performs better on stressed hosts, which contradicts the plant vigour hypothesis for galling insects. The low nutrient availability in the stressed shoots can be compensated by the production of galls with a nutrient-rich feeding tissue.  相似文献

Oviposition and larval feeding behaviors of the crucifer specialist Pieris napi macdunnoughii correlate with leaf glucosinolate profils of plant species in a natural community. Profiles are species-specific in this group of eight Cruciferae, but particular glucosinolates are shared by subsets of the community. Pieris accepts two lethal naturalized weeds whose glucosinolate profiles resemble that of an indigenous foodplant. The results suggest that specific glucosinolates constitute insect behavioral cues which are only loosely linked evolutionarily to foodplant suitability, and further suggest that allelochemically similar community associates influence the coevolution of individual plant species with insect herbivores.  相似文献

Summary The effects of clonal variation, interspecific competition, and climate upon the population size of Apterothrips secticornis was assessed by a series of observations and experimental manipulations. Three clones of the host plant, Erigeron glaucus, consistently supported different numbers of thrips during monthly censuses. When rosettes of the three clones were transplanted to a common garden, relative numbers of thrips on the clones remained the same as those observed where the clones grew in situ. The presence or absence of other hervivores had no effect on thrips numbers in the common garden. Plume moth caterpillars and thrips were observed to co-occur less often than expected in the field but this was caused by differences in habitat selection by these two species rather than being the result of interspecific competition. Populations of thrips were affected by climate, but analyses suggest that the host clone was a more important factor.  相似文献

Summary We investigated the effects of thorns and spines on the feeding of 5 herbivore species in arid Australia. The herbivores were the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), euro kangaroo (Macropus robustus), red kangaroo (Macropus rufus), sheep (Ovis aries), and cattle (Bos taurus). Five woody plants without spines or thorns and 6 woody plants with thorns were included in the study. The spines and thorns were not found to affect the herbivores' rates of feeding (items ingested/min), but they did reduce the herbivores' rates of biomass ingestion (g-dry/item). The reduction in biomass ingested occurred in two ways: at a given diameter, twigs with spines and thorns had less mass than undefended plants, and the herbivores consumed twigs with smaller diameters on plants with spines and thorns. The relative importance of the two ways that twigs with spines and thorns provided less biomass varied with herbivore body mass. Reduced twig mass was more important for small herbivores, while large herbivores selected smaller diameters. The effectiveness of spines and thorns as anti-herbivore defenses did not vary with the evolutionary history of the herbivores (i.e. native vs. introduced). Spines and thorns mainly affected the herbivores' selection of maximum twig sizes (reducing diameter and mass), but the minimum twig sizes selected were also reduced.  相似文献

Two pine species (Pinus resinosa, P. banksiana) responded to inoculation with fungi carried by bark beetles by rapidly increasing monoterpene concentrations at the entry site. Changes in total monoterpenes were more pronounced than changes in proportionate compositions. The extent and rate of host response was affected by fungal species, the viability of the inoculum, and host tree species. In general, host responses were highest to fungi that are phytopathogenic and consistently associated with the major bark beetles in the study region. Simple mechanical wounding cannot account for the observed allelochemical changes, as aseptic inoculations elicited only minor reactions. Similarly, inoculation with autoclaved inviable fungi generally elicited intermediate responses, suggesting that both structural and metabolic fungal properties are important. Responses by jack pine, P. banksiana, were generally more rapid and variable than those of red pine, P. resinosa. Dose-toxicity experiments with synthetic compounds demonstrated that monoterpene concentrations present in vivo only a few days after simulated attack are lethal to most beetles. Constitutive (pre-attack) monoterpene levels can also exert some toxicity. Because bark beetles engage in pheromone-mediated mass attacks that can deplete host defenses, constitutive monoterpene levels, while a necessary early phase of successful plant defense, appear insufficient by themselves. Such interactions between constitutive and induced defense chemistry may be important considerations when evaluating general theories of plant defense.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in herbivore numbers and in plant defenses are well known to influence plant–herbivore interactions. Some plant defenses are induced in response to herbivore attack or cues correlated with risk of attack although seasonal variation in these defenses is relatively poorly known. We previously reported that sagebrush becomes more resistant to its herbivores when neighboring plants have been experimentally clipped with scissors. In this study we asked whether herbivory to leaves of sagebrush varied seasonally and whether there was seasonal variation in natural levels of damage when neighbors were clipped. We found that sagebrush accumulated most chewing damage early in the season, soon after the spring flush of new leaves. This damage was caused by generalist grasshoppers, deer, specialist caterpillars, beetles, gall makers, and other less common herbivores. Sagebrush showed no evidence of preferentially abscising leaves that had been experimentally clipped. Experimental clipping by Trirhabda pilosa beetle larvae caused neighbors to accumulate less herbivore damage later that season, similar to results in which clipping was done with scissors. Induced resistance caused by experimentally clipping a neighbor was affected by season; plants with neighbors clipped in May accumulated less damage throughout the season relative to plants with unclipped neighbors or neighbors clipped later in the summer. We found a correlation between seasonal herbivore pressure, damage accumulated by plants, and induced responses to experimentally clipping neighbors. The causal mechanisms responsible for this correlation are unknown although a strong seasonal effect was clear.  相似文献

Experiments investigating plant-herbivore interactions have primarily focused on above-ground herbivory, with occasional studies evaluating the effect of below-ground herbivores on plant performance. This study investigated the growth of the wetland perennial Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) under three levels of root herbivory by the weevil Hylobiustransversovittatus and three levels of plant competition by the grass Phleumpratense in a common garden. Plant growth, flowering phenology, and biomass allocation patterns of purple loosestrife were recorded for two growing seasons. During the first year, root herbivory reduced plant height; plant competition delayed flowering; and the interaction of root herbivory and plant competition resulted in reductions in plant height, shoot weight and total dry biomass. Plant competition or larval feeding did not affect the biomass allocation pattern in the first year. These results indicate the importance of interactions of plant competition and herbivory in reducing plant performance – at least during the establishment period of purple loosestrife. In the second growing season, root herbivory reduced plant height, biomass of all plant parts, delayed and shortened the flowering period, and changed the biomass allocation patterns. Plant competition delayed flowering and reduced the dry weight of fine roots. The interaction of root herbivory and plant competition delayed flowering. Root herbivory was more important than plant competition in reducing the performance of established purple loosestrife plants. This was due, in part, to intense intraspecific competition among the grass individuals effectively preventing shoot elongation of P. pratense and resulting in a carpet like growth. Abstract.
  • 1 Outbreaks of tussock moths (Orygia verusta Bdv.) on bush lupines (Lupinus arboreus Sims) may be very intense, although spatially localized, and may last >10 years. To understand better how such outbreaks may persist, we defoliated lupine bushes using variable realistic numbers of tussock moth larvae, and measured the immediate and delayed impacts of defoliation on the growth and seed production of lupine bushes.
  • 2 Immediate effects of defoliation included the production of new leaves that were significantly smaller in diameter and biomass, and lower in water content, than the new leaves of undamaged bushes. Also, seed output was reduced by up to 80% on heavily damaged bushes.
  • 3 In the longer term, surviving bushes recovered remarkably well, despite having received the full range of possible (survivable) insect densities. After 1 or 2 years’rapid growth, surviving bushes were not affected in terms of height, basal stem diameter or volume by their previous defoliation. However, there was a significant tendency for juvenile bushes to produce more seeds the more heavily they had been attacked the previous year.
  • 4 The ability of the host plant to recover, in terms of its biomass, helps to explain the sustained nature of the insect outbreak.
