Virus origin of the oat sterile dwarf disease

Virus particles (approximately 73 nm in diam.) usually showing an inner capside (45 nm in diam.) and similar to diplornaviruses, esp. reoviruses, were found in some cells of enations inAvena sativa andArrhenatherum elatius leaves infected with the oat sterile dwarf disease (OSDD). (The same virus particles were described by the authors in 1966 in the leafhopper vector.) Mycoplasma-like microorganisms found in1969 in the OSDD leafhopper vector were absent in OSDD infected plants. Tetracycline did not affect symptom development in plants and did not alter the infectivity of the vector. Therefore, OSDD is apparently of virus origin; mycoplasmas-like bodies found formerly in the OSDD vector are probably not involved in OSDD etiology.     

Growth of the skull in the mutant dwarf mouse

By following the development of individual mice from birth to 200 days of age, it was found that the skull of the homozygous mutant (dwdw) was 5% shorter than that of the normal phenotype at birth and some 30% shorter at 200 days of age. During post-natal growth of the skull, the cranium was least altered but the facial skeleton was greatly affected. The differences seen in different parts of the skull are attributed to the peak growth velocities of the various parts occurring at different times.

X-ray microanalysis of cardiocytes in the Snell dwarf mouse

X-ray microanalysis has been used to determine elemental content in the nucleus, myofibrillar cytoplasm and mitochondrially enriched cytoplasm of cardiocytes in Snell dwarf mice in comparison with phenotypically normal mice from the same strain. It was found that there was significantly lower chlorine concentration in all three subcellular locations and significantly lower sodium concentration in the nucleus of dwarf mouse cardiocytes. In both normal and dwarf mice, statistically significant subcellular compartmentalization was found for phosphorus, sulfur, and potassium.
