The results of the works on the international project for the Baltic sturgeon restoration in the basin of the Neman River are considered. The mutual goal of the project is the restoration of the Baltic sturgeon population in its whole former area in the Baltic Sea. Successful works on the restoration of the Baltic sturgeon population are conducted in the Oder and the Vistula basins. The stockings of the Neman River with the sturgeon fry were started from 2012 year. It is contemplated that the sturgeon stockings of the main rivers of the Baltic Sea will enable to restore local sturgeon populations in these river basins. Till the beginning of the XXI century it was supposed that the Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio had inhabited the Baltic Sea, but numerous genetic analysis of the samples of the sturgeon bones from the archeological finds in the museums showed that the Baltic Sea had been inhabited with Acipenser oxyrhynchus and its population still inhabits several rivers in Canada. This discovery permitted to start the creation of the Baltic sturgeon broodstock. Sturgeon fry from the eggs imported from Canada were used for stocking at the first stage of the project. Later it is contemplated to use the fry from the broodstocks in Germany and Poland. Sturgeon fry hatched from Canadian eggs in Poland and reared in Lithuania was used for the Neman River stocking. The fry were tagged and released in the Neris and the Sventoji Rivers in the Neman River basin. The sturgeon migrated into the Curonian lagoon where the monitoring of the catches was fulfilled. The results of sturgeon catches monitoring are discussed.  相似文献

Sixty-eight white-tailed sea eagle territories were studied on the Swedish Baltic coast in 1964–1982 and 22 territories in Swedish Lapland in 1976–1982. Older data were assembled for comparison. The breeding frequency of adult pairs was high in both study areas (ca. 90%). Median egg-laying dates were 17 March (Baltic) and 7 April (Lapland). Average clutch size and egg volume did not differ between samples from the Baltic taken between 1856 and 1982. Average clutch size was significantly smaller in Lapland (1.6 eggs) than on the Baltic coast (2.1 eggs). Clutch size in Lapland was positively related to carrion availability during March. Nestling survival was significantly lower in Lapland, due to starvation in broods of more than one young. Brood loss was significantly more frequent in Lapland. At the Baltic, nest success decreased from 75 to 22%, and brood size from 1.8 to 1.2, from the early 1950's to the mid 1960's. Nest success in 1976-1982 was significantly lower at the Baltic (26%) than in Lapland (45%), with a much larger proportion of consistently failing pairs. The proportion of eggs laid that resulted in fledged young was estimated at 16% at the Baltic and 39% in Lapland. It is concluded that egg production and nestling survival were suppressed by limited food supply and nest success by human interference in Lapland, and that the reproductive impairment of the Baltic population was due primarily to contamination with toxic substances, mainly DDE.  相似文献

The susceptibility of various races of salmonids towards infections with the skin parasitic monogenean Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957, differs markedly. Norwegian and Scottish salmon strains are known as extremely susceptible to infection, whereas Baltic salmon races such as the Neva strain (Russian origin) and the Indals river (Swedish origin) salmon have been characterized as relatively resistant. However, the status of the many other Baltic strains has remained unknown. The present study reports on the susceptibility of the Baltic salmon from the Swedish river Lule. It was shown that this strain is susceptible to infection but to a lesser extent than the Scottish salmon. Further studies showed that injection of immuno-suppressants (dexamethasone) greatly increased population growth of G. salaris on Scottish salmon but not on the Baltic salmon. Mucous cell density on fins differed between strains, and a general trend to decreased cell density on infected fish 8 wk post-infection, compared to uninfected fish, was observed. The largest decrease in mucous cell density following infection was seen in the most resistant fish. After administration of immuno-suppressants, this decrease in mucous cell density was inhibited in the Scottish salmon but not in the Baltic salmon. Thus, there seems to be a relationship between the fishes' ability to discard mucous cells and the ability to resist infections with Gyrodactylus salaris. Although the Lule salmon seems more susceptible to infection compared to previous reports on the Neva salmon, the results support the notion that Baltic salmon strains are generally more resistant than East Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

The marine algal species in the Baltic Sea are few due to the low sea water salinity. One of the few species that can be found is Fucus vesiculosus. Even this species is affected by the low salinity and becomes smaller in size in the Baltic. In present work the photosynthesis of F. vesiculosus in the northern Baltic (Bothnian Sea) was compared to the photosynthesis of F. vesiculosus in the Atlantic. Oxygen evolution was measured before and after exposure to 2.3 W of UV-B (280–320 nm) radiation for 5 h, as well as after 48 h recovery in low light. The plants were kept in their own sea water salinity as well as in a changed salinity, this to examine possible correlations between salinity and photosynthesis. The results show a significant higher initial maximal photosynthesis (P max) for Atlantic plants (10.3 nmol O2 g−1 FW s−1) compared to Baltic plants (4.0 nmol O2 g−1 FW s−1). The Baltic plants were found more sensitive to UV-B with a 40–50% decrease of P max as well as a lower degree of recovery (60–70% compared to 75–95% for the Atlantic plants). The higher salinity (35 psu) had a positive effect on the Baltic F. vesiculosus with increased P max as well as increased tolerance to UV-B. The lower salinity (5 psu) had a negative effect on the Atlantic plants with a decreased P max as well as a lower tolerance to UV-B. Pigment content was found higher in Atlantic F. vesiculosus. The pigment content decreased then the Atlantic plants were transferred to 5 psu. The concentration of Chl a as well as the total content of violaxanthin, diadinoxanthin and zeaxanthin in Baltic plants increased when transferred to 35 psu. The Atlantic F. vesiculosus can not survive the low salinity in the northern Baltic (died within 8 weeks). It is likely that a long time acclimation or adaptation to low salinity has taken place for F. vesiculosus in northern Baltic. If this is an ecotypic or genotypic development it is too early to say.  相似文献

A geographical survey was made of the distribution of diaphanoid Ceramia in the Baltic Sea and adjacent waters west of the Baltic. It was found that Ceramium plants with so-called 'Gobi's' parasporangia (monosporangia) have a wide distribution in the Baltic Sea at salinities of ca (3) 5–8%. This brackish-water Ceramium is here described as a new species, Ceramium gobii. At higher salinities in the south of the Baltic Sea and on the Swedish west coast, round parasporangia (polysporangia) indicate the occurrence of other Ceramium species. The new species is very similar to the brackish-water species Ceramium radiculosum , which was described from river-mouths to the Gulf of Trieste (Italy). A comparison was made of several diaphanoid Ceramium species, C. diaphanum, C. tenuicorne, C. gobii , and C. radiculosum , including (1) size of male plants, (2) type of paraspores, (3) vegetative characters.  相似文献

The netted dog whelk Nassarius reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1758), considered as an extinct benthic species in German Baltic waters, was found again alive in the Mecklenburg Bight during several macrozoobenthic surveys since 1997. All data indicate that the establishment of this marine prosobranch species is connected with the more frequent intrusions of highly saline water from the North Sea into the Baltic that have been observed over the past few years. It is proposed that N. reticulatus is a good bioindicator for the hydrographic status in the western Baltic rather than for other existing potential conditions. Thiaminase activity was determined for Gulf of Bothnia (GB) and Gulf of Finland (GF) Baltic herring Clupea harengus membras , sprat Sprattus sprattus and three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus sampled from either trawl or gillnet catches or from Baltic salmon Salmo salar stomachs. The thiaminase activity in Baltic herring was about 10-fold higher than that in sprat, and there was almost no thiaminase activity in three-spined stickleback. Thiaminase activity of undigested Baltic herring found in Baltic salmon stomachs was significantly higher than that of trawl-caught Baltic herring from the same sea area, suggesting that there may be a higher risk of predation for Baltic herring with high thiaminase activity, possibly linked to their health. Thiaminase activity of the gastrointestinal contents of Baltic salmon, feeding almost entirely on Baltic herring in the GB, was significantly higher than for Baltic salmon feeding on both Baltic herring and sprat in the GF. Therefore, Baltic herring may be the major source of thiaminase for Baltic salmon. A tank experiment demonstrated that thiaminase activity in Baltic herring may vary, even within very short time periods. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that the thiaminase content in Baltic salmon forage fish may be an important link in the aetiology of the thiamine deficiency syndrome, M74, in Baltic salmon.  相似文献

This paper reviews the current state of research into viruses of microorganisms in the Baltic Sea. Field and experimental studies reveal the great phenotypic and genotypic variety of the Baltic Sea viruses and highlights the importance of phages in the Baltic Sea food-web dynamics. In total, 93 virus isolates from the Baltic Sea have been described, the genome sequence being available for 39 of these. However, these isolates were derived from only eight host species and, therefore, underrepresent the overall viral diversity in the Baltic Sea. The most studied group of viruses is bacteriophages that infect Bacteroidetes, whereas, by contrast, phages of Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, as well as algal viruses, have been investigated to a lesser extent. No reports on viruses infecting Baltic Sea fungi and archaea isolates have been reported to date. This paper also identifies gaps in our knowledge of the aquatic virology of the Baltic Sea and emphasizes the need for more comprehensive analysis of those viruses that occur in one of the world's largest brackish water ecosystems.  相似文献

We found significant population structure and isolation by distance among samples of flounder (Platichthys flesus) in the Baltic, Kattegat and Skagerrak seas using microsatellite genetic markers. This pattern was almost entirely due to a difference between flounder that have demersal spawning in the northern Baltic, as compared to pelagic spawners in the southern Baltic and on the west coast of Sweden. Among demersal spawners we found neither genetic differentiation nor any isolation by distance among sampling sites. We speculate that demersal flounder are descendants of a population that colonized the Baltic previous to pelagic spawners. The demersal flounder may thus have had longer time to adapt to the low salinity in the Baltic, and accordingly display egg characteristics that make it possible to reproduce at the low salinity levels in the northern Baltic. Among pelagic spawners significant isolation by distance was detected. Pelagic spawners have previously been shown to display clinal variation in egg size, which allows them to float also at the moderate salinity levels up to the region north of the island Bornholm. Management units for harvesting should ideally be based on true biological populations, and for the commercially important flounder up to 15 different management stocks in the Baltic have been suggested. We could not find a population genetic foundation for such a high number of management units, and our data suggest three management units: the northern Baltic (demersal populations), southern Baltic with the Oresund straits and the most northwestern sampling sites (Skagerrak, Kattegat and North Sea).  相似文献

Proceeding from long-term data on the numbers of eggs of cod in ichthyoplankton, the total annual production of cod eggs at four main spawning grounds of the Baltic Sea was calculated. It was shown that the long-term fluctuations of cod egg production were positively related to the dynamics of the volume of waters coming to the Baltic Sea in years of the North Sea advections. It is suggested that this dependence was determined by a set of adaptations providing the extension of cod reproduction upon the improvement of the environment.  相似文献

The stony reefs of the Slupsk Bank were studied in July 1999 using hydroacoustic methods, underwater photography and video. Samples of macroalgae and associated fauna were collected by divers using a specially designed sampler. The results of the research indicate that this area is a unique site in the southern Baltic Sea. The high diversity of macroalgae and associated fauna, including the occurrence of three algal species endangered in the Polish coastal zone, is particularly of interest. The Slupsk Bank is also a feeding ground for many wintering birds. For these reasons, it is proposed that the site is designated as an open sea Helsinki Commission Baltic Sea Protected Area (HELCOM BSPA). It is also proposed that it is used as a reference area for ecosystem structure and ecotoxicological studies.  相似文献

Two freshwater populations and one marine population (Baltic Sea) of threespine stickeback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from Northeastern Germany were studied with regard to locomotory capacity: sustained swimming performance, activities of key enzymes in axial muscle, pectoral fin muscle and heart, and morphology. We postulated that life history differences between migratory Baltic Sea and resident freshwater populations could have led to a divergence in their locomotory capacity. The activity of citrate synthase (CS) in pectoral muscle correlated with critical swimming speed. Critical swimming speed, aerobic and anaerobic capacity of the pectoral fin muscle were population-specific. The Baltic Sea sticklebacks had a higher locomotory capacity (activity of CS in pectoral muscle, critical swimming speed) than sticklebacks of one freshwater population. However, another freshwater population expressed a similar locomotory capacity as the Baltic Sea population. In addition, Baltic Sea sticklebacks had a greater mass and lower anaerobic capacity of the pectoral fin muscle than the freshwater sticklebacks. The results are interpreted as an indication of a proceeding divergence between marine and resident freshwater populations and between freshwater populations of G. aculeatus originating from marine ancestors. The migratory Baltic Sea sticklebacks had better morphological prerequisites for sustained swimming than both freshwater populations, but there was no general difference in the locomotory capacity between marine and freshwater sticklebacks. However, their morphology could favour a more effective locomotion in the Baltic Sea sticklebacks.  相似文献

Potential thiaminase activity of Baltic herring Clupea harengus ranged from 0 to c. 55 nmol g-1 min-1 while potential thiaminase activity in Baltic salmon Salmo salar gastrointestinal (GI) contents ranged from 7 to c. 60 nmol g-1 min-1. About 30% of the Baltic herring analysed had a potential thiaminase activity equivalent to Baltic salmon GI contents. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that thiaminase in the forage fish of Baltic salmon may be an important link in the aetiology of the thiamine deficiency syndrome, M74, in Baltic salmon and indicate that Baltic salmon might feed selectively on Baltic herring with high thiaminase activity.  相似文献

The study of hybrid zones is central to our understanding of the genetic basis of reproductive isolation and speciation, yet very little is known about the extent and significance of hybrid zones in marine fishes. We examined the population structure of cod in the transition area between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea employing nine microsatellite loci. Genetic differentiation between the North Sea sample and the rest increased along a transect to the Baltic proper, with a large increase in level of differentiation occurring in the Western Baltic area. Our objective was to determine whether this pattern was caused purely by varying degrees of mechanical mixing of North Sea and Baltic Sea cod or by interbreeding and formation of a hybrid swarm. Simulation studies revealed that traditional Hardy-Weinberg analysis did not have sufficient power for detection of a Wahlund effect. However, using a model-based clustering method for individual admixture analysis, we were able to demonstrate the existence of intermediate genotypes in all samples from the transition area. Accordingly, our data were explained best by a model of a hybrid swarm flanked by pure nonadmixed populations in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea proper. Significant correlation of gene identities across loci (gametic phase disequilibrium) was found only in a sample from the Western Baltic, suggesting this area as the centre of the apparent hybrid zone. A hybrid zone for cod in the ecotone between the high-saline North Sea and the low-saline Baltic Sea is discussed in relation to its possible origin and maintenance, and in relation to a classical study of haemoglobin variation in cod from the Baltic Sea/Danish Belt Sea, suggesting mixing of two divergent populations without interbreeding.  相似文献

Drivers of population genetic structure are still poorly understood in marine micro‐organisms. We exploited the North Sea–Baltic Sea transition for investigating the seascape genetics of a marine diatom, Skeletonema marinoi. Eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were analysed in 354 individuals from ten locations to analyse population structure of the species along a 1500‐km‐long salinity gradient ranging from 3 to 30 psu. To test for salinity adaptation, salinity reaction norms were determined for sets of strains originating from three different salinity regimes of the gradient. Modelled oceanographic connectivity was compared to directional relative migration by correlation analyses to examine oceanographic drivers. Population genetic analyses showed distinct genetic divergence of a low‐salinity Baltic Sea population and a high‐salinity North Sea population, coinciding with the most evident physical dispersal barrier in the area, the Danish Straits. Baltic Sea populations displayed reduced genetic diversity compared to North Sea populations. Growth optima of low salinity isolates were significantly lower than those of strains from higher native salinities, indicating local salinity adaptation. Although the North Sea–Baltic Sea transition was identified as a barrier to gene flow, migration between Baltic Sea and North Sea populations occurred. However, the presence of differentiated neutral markers on each side of the transition zone suggests that migrants are maladapted. It is concluded that local salinity adaptation, supported by oceanographic connectivity patterns creating an asymmetric migration pattern between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, determines genetic differentiation patterns in the transition zone.  相似文献

A coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model was implemented in order to estimate the effects of Major Baltic Inflows on the near-bottom hydrophysical and biogeochemical conditions in the northern Baltic Proper and the western Gulf of Finland during the period 1991–2009. We compared results of a realistic reference run to the results of an experimental run where Major Baltic Inflows were suppressed. Further to the expected overall decrease in bottom salinity, this modelling experiment confirms that in the absence of strong saltwater inflows the deep areas of the Baltic Proper would become more anoxic, while in the shallower areas (western Gulf of Finland) near-bottom average conditions improve. Our experiment revealed that typical estuarine circulation results in the sporadic emergence of short-lasting events of near-bottom anoxia in the western Gulf of Finland due to transport of water masses from the Baltic Proper. Extrapolating our results beyond the modelled period, we speculate that the further deepening of the halocline in the Baltic Proper is likely to prevent inflows of anoxic water to the Gulf of Finland and in the longer term would lead to improvement in near-bottom conditions in the Baltic Proper. Our results reaffirm the importance of accurate representation of salinity dynamics in coupled Baltic Sea models serving as a basis for credible hindcast and future projection simulations of biogeochemical conditions.  相似文献

The marine algae Ulva intestinalis and U. compressa are morphologically plastic with many overlapping characters and are therefore difficult to distinguish from each other. The present distribution of U. intestinalis and U. compressa is investigated along the salinity gradient in the Baltic Sea area through analyses of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence data. Also, the amount and distribution of intraspecific genetic polymorphism in the ITS region is studied allowing inferences on the phylogeographical pattern and postglacial recolonization of the Baltic Sea area. The data show that of the two species only U. intestinalis occurs in the Baltic Sea. The distribution of U. compressa is more restricted than previously reported, and it was not found in salinities lower than 15 ppt. All of Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea were covered with ice during the last ice age and the organisms in the Baltic Sea must have colonized the area after the ice had started to melt. The genetic diversity of U. intestinalis and U. compressa in the Baltic Sea and the neighbouring area was found to be reduced compared to that in the British Isles. This reduction may be the result of either a historical reduction of diversity or an adaptation of specific clones to the northern environmental conditions.  相似文献

The diet of whiting Merlangius merlangus in the western Baltic Sea was investigated and compared to the diet in the southern North Sea. Clupeids were important prey in both areas, but especially in the western Baltic Sea where they constituted up to 90% of the diet of larger individuals. Gobies, brown shrimps and polychaetes were the main prey of juveniles in the western Baltic Sea, while a wider range of species were consumed in the North Sea. The shift to piscivory occurred at smaller sizes in the western Baltic Sea and the fish prey consumed was proportionately larger than in the southern North Sea. Estimates of prey abundance and food intake of M. merlangus are required to evaluate its predatory significance in the western Baltic Sea, but its diet suggests that it could be just as significant a fish predator here as in the southern North Sea.  相似文献

Anabaena is a filamentous, N(2)-fixing, and morphologically diverse genus of cyanobacteria found in freshwater and brackish water environments worldwide. It contributes to the formation of toxic blooms in freshwater bodies through the production of a range of hepatotoxins or neurotoxins. In the Baltic Sea, Anabaena spp. form late summer blooms, together with Nodularia spumigena and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. It has been long suspected that Baltic Sea Anabaena may produce microcystins. The presence of microcystins has been reported for the coastal regions of the Baltic proper, and a recent report also indicated the presence of the toxin in the open Gulf of Finland. However, at present there is no direct evidence linking Baltic Sea Anabaena spp. to microcystin production. Here we report on the isolation of microcystin-producing strains of the genus Anabaena in the open Gulf of Finland. The dominant microcystin variants produced by these strains included the highly toxic MCYST-LR as well as [d-Asp(3)]MCYST-LR, [d-Asp(3)]MCYST-HtyR, MCYST-HtyR, [d-Asp(3),Dha(7)]MCYST-HtyR, and [Dha(7)]MCYST-HtyR variants. Toxic strains were isolated from the coastal Gulf of Finland as well as from the easternmost open-sea sampling station, where there were lower salinities than at other stations. This result suggests that lower salinity may favor microcystin-producing Anabaena strains. Furthermore, we sequenced 16S rRNA genes and found evidence for pronounced genetic heterogeneity of the microcystin-producing Anabaena strains. Future studies should take into account the potential presence of microcystin-producing Anabaena sp. in the Gulf of Finland.  相似文献
