Stance phase joint moments, muscle power outputs and mechanical energy characteristics were determined in five normal and five below knee amputee subjects running at 2.8 m s-1. The amputees were studied sequentially on three different prosthetic feet: the SACH foot (solid ankle cushion heel), and two energy storing feet, Seattle and Flex. While wearing the SACH foot, the amputees exhibited major alterations in the distribution and magnitude of muscle power output and muscle work: (1) the total work done by the lower extremity was reduced; (2) the hip extensors became the main source of energy absorption and generation, while in normal subjects the ankle plantarflexors were the major energy generators and the knee extensors the major energy absorbers; (3) the eccentric and concentric knee extensor power outputs were reduced and an abnormal concentric knee flexor power output was noted immediately after heel contact. In four of the amputees, energy storing feet resulted in improvements in the power output and mechanical work characteristics of the lower extremity: (1) the energy storing prosthetic feet generated 2-3 times greater energy than the SACH foot; (2) with the Flex foot the amputees exhibited a more normal pattern and magnitude of hip and knee extensor muscle work. One of the subjects, however, exhibited increased abnormalities with the energy storing prosthetic feet. The amount of energy restored relative to the amount of energy absorbed by each of the prosthetic feet was greater with the energy storing feet than the SACH foot (Flex 84%, Seattle 52%, SACH 31%).  相似文献

The mobility of above-knee amputees (A/K) is limited, in part, due to the performance of A/K prostheses during the stance phase. Currently stance phase control of most conventional A/K prostheses can only be achieved through leg alignment and choice of the SACH (Solid Ankle Cushioned Heel) foot. This paper examines the role of the knee controller in relation to a SACH foot during the stance phase of level walking. The three-dimensional gait mechanics were measured under two stance phase conditions. In the first set of trials, the amputee used a prosthesis with a conventional knee controller that allowed the amputee to maintain the knee joint in full extension during the stance phase. In the second set of trials, the prosthetic knee, during stance, echoed the modified kinematics of the amputee's sound (intact) knee that had been recorded during the previous sound stance phase. Analysis and interpretation of the data indicate the following: (1) SACH foot design can strongly influence the walking mechanics independent of the knee controller; (2) knee controller design and SACH foot design are mutually interdependent; and (3) normal kinematics imposed on the prosthetic knee does not necessarily produce normal hip kinematics (e.g. reduce the abnormal rise in the prosthetic side hip trajectory). Future research is necessary to explore and exploit the interdependency of prosthetic knee control and foot design.  相似文献

The effects of sinusoidal vibration (40-120 Hz, amplitude equal to or smaller than 0.42 mm) on seed germination of Arabidopsis thaliana were examined. When the amplitude of vibration was fixed at 0.42 mm, vibration with frequencies higher than 70 Hz increased the rate of seed germination. When the frequency of vibration was fixed at 100 Hz, vibration with amplitudes larger than 0.33 mm also increased the rate of germination. The increase in the rate of germination appeared dependent on acceleration calculated from the frequency and amplitude of vibration. Vibration with a maximum acceleration of 70 m s(-2) increased the rate of germination, but the promotive effects leveled off at higher accelerations. Vibration had little effect on seed germination in a starch-deficient mutant, pgm. Thus, the amyloplasts appeared to act as a susceptor that senses mechanical vibrations. No vibration-induced promotion of germination was seen in an ethylene-insensitive mutant, etr1, or in the wild type in the presence of aminoethoxyvinylglycine, an inhibitor of ethylene synthesis, suggesting that vibration increased the rate of seed germination through the action of ethylene.  相似文献

Resultant flexion/extension lower extremity joint moments of four below-knee amputees running between 2.5 and 5.7 m s-1 were computed during stance on their intact and prosthetic limbs. All subjects wore patellar tendon-bearing prostheses with either a SACH or Greissinger foot component. During stance on the prosthesis, the resultant hip extensor moment on the amputated side was greater in magnitude and duration than its counterpart on the intact limb during its corresponding stance period. Since the artificial foot was planted on the ground, such a moment may help control knee flexion and promote knee extension of the residual limb. For the three subjects whose knees continued to flex at the beginning of stance, there was a dominant extensor moment about the knee joint during stance on the prosthesis. By contrast, for the fourth subject whose knee remained straight or hyperextended throughout stance on the prosthesis, a flexor moment was dominant.  相似文献

Impact forces and shock deceleration during jumping and running have been associated with various knee injury etiologies. This study investigates the influence of jump height and knee contact angle on peak ground reaction force and segment axial accelerations. Ground reaction force, segment axial acceleration, and knee angles were measured for 6 male subjects during vertical jumping. A simple spring-mass model is used to predict the landing stiffness at impact as a function of (1) jump height, (2) peak impact force, (3) peak tibial axial acceleration, (4) peak thigh axial acceleration, and (5) peak trunk axial acceleration. Using a nonlinear least square fit, a strong (r = 0.86) and significant (p < or = 0.05) correlation was found between knee contact angle and stiffness calculated using the peak impact force and jump height. The same model also showed that the correlation was strong (r = 0.81) and significant (p < or = 0.05) between knee contact angle and stiffness calculated from the peak trunk axial accelerations. The correlation was weaker for the peak thigh (r = 0.71) and tibial (r = 0.45) axial accelerations. Using the peak force but neglecting jump height in the model, produces significantly worse correlation (r = 0.58). It was concluded that knee contact angle significantly influences both peak ground reaction forces and segment accelerations. However, owing to the nonlinear relationship, peak forces and segment accelerations change more rapidly at smaller knee flexion angles (i.e., close to full extension) than at greater knee flexion angles.  相似文献

Recent epidemiological studies suggest a link between transport magnetic fields (MF) and certain adverse health effects. We performed measurements in workplaces of engineers on Russian DC and Swiss AC powered (16.67 Hz) electric trains using a computer based waveform capture system with a 200 Hz sampling rate. MF in DC and AC trains show complex combinations of static and varying components. The most probable levels of quasistatic MF (0.001-0.03 Hz) were in the range 40 microT. Maximum levels of 120 microT were found in DC powered locomotives. These levels are much higher than the geomagnetic field at the site of measurements. MF encountered both in DC and AC powered rail systems showed irregular temporal variability in frequency composition and amplitude characteristics across the whole frequency range studied (0-50 Hz); however, more than 90% of the magnetic field power was concentrated in frequencies 相似文献

The activity of neck-muscle motoneurones which control head movements during eye cleaning behaviour was recorded from motor nerves with chronically implanted electrodes in unrestrained crickets. We show that motoneurones of the dorso-ventral muscles displayed strong activity differences between both sides of the neck, with higher discharge frequencies either ipsi- or contralateral to the direction of the head movement. Motoneurones innervating dorsal-longitudinal muscles were equally active on both sides. A single excitatory motoneurone of one dorso-ventral muscle showed a discharge pattern unequivocally related to eye cleaning. Lesions of connectives revealed that this motoneurone is monitored by interneuronal pathways from the suboesophageal ganglion although the primary sensory axons eliciting eye cleaning, project into the prothoracic ganglion.  相似文献

Increased muscle activation during whole-body vibration (WBV) is mainly ascribed to a complex spinal and supraspinal neurophysiological mechanism termed the tonic vibration reflex (TVR). However, TVR has not been experimentally demonstrated during low-frequency WBV, therefore this investigation aimed to determine the expression of TVR during WBV.  Whilst seated, eight healthy males were exposed to either vertical WBV applied to the leg via the plantar-surface of the foot, or Achilles tendon vibration (ATV) at 25Hz and 50Hzfor 70s. Ankle plantar-flexion force, tri-axial accelerations at the shank and vibration source, and surface EMG activity of m. soleus (SOL) and m. tibialis anterior (TA) were recorded from the unloaded and passively loaded leg to simulate body mass supported during standing.  Plantar flexion force was similarly augmented by WBV and ATV and increased over time in a load- and frequency dependent fashion. SOL and TA EMG amplitudes increased over time in all conditions independently of vibration mode. 50Hz WBV and ATV resulted in greater muscle activation than 25Hz in SOL when the shank was loaded and in TA when the shank was unloaded despite the greater transmission of vertical acceleration from source to shank with 25Hz and WBV, especially during loading. Low-amplitude WBV of the unloaded and passively loaded leg produced slow tonic muscle contraction and plantar-flexion force increase of similar magnitudes to those induced by Achilles tendon vibration at the same frequencies. This study provides the first experimental evidence supporting the TVR as a plausible mechanism underlying the neuromuscular response to whole-body vibration.  相似文献

Harmonic distortion (HD) from 1,055 responses of muscle spindles sensory endings to sinusoidal stretches (frequency range 0.0008 to 0.8333 Hz, amplitude range 0.019 to 3.09 mm) has been studied in the cat soleus muscle. Sixty-six per cent were primary afferents (Ia) and 34% secondary (II). HD mean value (0.28) did not show any significant differences between both types of endings. Analysis of variance for HD versus stimulation amplitude showed a greater HD when stretch amplitudes were beyond 1.599 mm or less than 0.031 mm on primary afferents (p less than 0.001) and less than 0.070 mm on secondary (p less than 0.001). The effect of stimulus frequency was also significant (p less than 0.01 Ia and p less than 0.001 II), however only at 0.8333 Hz and in secondary endings HD was significantly higher. The silent period in the response, at release of stretch, caused by half wave rectification could explain about 50% of measured HD.  相似文献

Modern electronics allow for the unobtrusive measurement of accelerations outside the laboratory using wireless sensor nodes. The ability to accurately measure joint accelerations under unrestricted conditions, and to correlate them with jump height and landing force, could provide important data to better understand joint mechanics subject to real-life conditions. This study investigates the correlation between peak vertical ground reaction forces, as measured by a force plate, and tibial axial accelerations during free vertical jumping. The jump heights calculated from force-plate data and accelerometer measurements are also compared. For six male subjects participating in this study, the average coefficient of determination between peak ground reaction force and peak tibial axial acceleration is found to be 0.81. The coefficient of determination between jump height calculated using force plate and accelerometer data is 0.88. Data show that the landing forces could be as high as 8 body weights of the jumper. The measured peak tibial accelerations ranged up to 42 g. Jump heights calculated from force plate and accelerometer sensors data differed by less than 2.5 cm. It is found that both impact accelerations and landing forces are only weakly correlated with jump height (the average coefficient of determination is 0.12). This study shows that unobtrusive accelerometers can be used to determine the ground reaction forces experienced in a jump landing. Whereas the device also permitted an accurate determination of jump height, there was no correlation between peak ground reaction force and jump height.  相似文献

Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) are a recently described clinical measure of the vestibulo-ocular reflex. Studies demonstrating differences in frequency tuning between air-conducted and bone-conducted (BC) oVEMPs suggest a separate vestibular (otolith) origin for each stimulus modality. In this study, 10 healthy subjects were stimulated with BC stimuli using a hand-held minishaker. Frequencies were tested in the range of 50-1,000 Hz using both a constant-force and constant-acceleration method. Subjects were stimulated at the mastoid process and the forehead. For constant-force stimulation at both sites, maximum acceleration occurred around 100 Hz, in differing axes. Both forms of stimulation had low-frequency peaks of oVEMP amplitudes (constant force: mastoid, 80-150 Hz; forehead, 50-125 Hz; constant acceleration: mastoid, 100-200 Hz; forehead, 80-150 Hz), for both sites of application, despite differences in the magnitude and direction of evoked head acceleration. For mastoid stimulation, ocular responses changed from out of phase to in phase for 400 Hz and above. Our results demonstrate that BC stimuli show tuning around 100 Hz, independent of stimulus site, that is not due to skull properties. The findings are consistent with an effect on a receptor with a resonance around 100 Hz, most likely the utricle.  相似文献

The discharges of anterior and posterior lateral line nerve afferents were recorded while stimulating goldfish, Carassius auratus, with bulk water flow. With increasing flow velocity lateral line afferents increased their discharge rates. However, an increased response to flow rates occurred even if flow direction was reversed. Thus, individual lateral line afferents did not encode the direction of running water. Frequency spectra of the water motions quantified with particle image velocimetry revealed flow fluctuations that increased with increasing flow velocity. Maximal spectral amplitudes of the flow fluctuations were below 5 Hz (bulk flow velocity 4–15 cm s−1). The frequency spectra of the firing rates of lateral line afferents also showed an increase in amplitude when fish were exposed to running water. The maximal spectral amplitudes of the recorded data were in the frequency range 3–8 Hz. This suggests that the lateral line afferents mainly responded to the higher frequency fluctuations that developed under flow conditions, but not to the direct current flow or the lower frequency fluctuations. Although individual lateral line afferents encoded neither flow velocity nor flow direction we suggest that higher order lateral line neurons can do so by monitoring flow fluctuations as they move across the surface of the fish.  相似文献

Studies of vibration perception in the glabrous skin of the human hand have identified four mechanoreceptor channels, with each channel showing characteristic variations in thresholds with variations in the frequency of vibration and the area of vibration excitation. To advance understanding of the channels mediating vibration perception on the sole of the foot, this study determined how thresholds depend on the frequency of vibration, the location on the foot (the big toe, the ball of the foot, and the heel), and the gap between a vibrating probe and a fixed surround. Thresholds at the three locations were obtained at the 12 preferred one-third octave centre frequencies from 20 to 250 Hz using a 6-mm diameter probe with both a 10-mm and a 20-mm diameter surround. With the 10-mm surround, the displacement thresholds at all three locations showed flat responses from 20 to 40 Hz. With both the 10-mm and the 20-mm surround, the displacement thresholds at the three locations showed "U-shaped" responses from 40 to 250 Hz. Relative to thresholds obtained with the 20-mm surround, thresholds obtained with the 10-mm surround were lower at the toe and the heel with 20- and 25-Hz vibration, but higher at the ball of the foot with 31.5- to 250-Hz vibration. It is concluded that absolute thresholds for the perception of vibration at the sole of the foot show important variations with location and with contact conditions and tend to be mediated by the NP I channel in the range from about 20 to 40 Hz and the P channel from about 40 to 250 Hz.  相似文献

We have developed a stochastic model that describes the orientation response of bipolar cells grown on a cyclically deformed substrate. The model was based on the following hypotheses regarding the behavior of individual cells: (a) the mechanical signal responsible for cell reorientation is the peak to peak surface strain along the cell's major axis (p-p axial strain); (b) each cell has an axial strain threshold and the threshold is normally distributed in the cell population; (c) the cell will avoid any direction where the p-p axial strain is above its threshold; and (d) the cell will randomly orient within the range of directions where the p-p axial strains are less than the cell's threshold. These hypotheses were tested by comparing model predictions with experimental observations from stretch experiments conducted with human melanocytes. The cells were grown on elastic rectangular culture dishes subjected to unidirectional cyclic (1 Hz) stretching with amplitudes of 0, 4, 8, and 12%. After 24 h of stimulation, the distribution of cell orientations was determined by measuring the orientations of 300–400 randomly selected cells. The 12% stretch experiment was used to determine the mean, 3.5%, and the standard deviation, 1.0%, of the strain threshold for the cell population. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was then used to determine if the orientation distributions predicted by the model were different from experimentally measured distributions for the 4 and 8% stretches. No significant differences were found between the predicted and experimental distributions (4%: p = 0.70; and 8%: p = 0.71). These results support the hypothesis that cells randomly orient, but avoid directions where the p-p axial strains are above their thresholds.  相似文献

Aims

To evaluate vibrotactile perception at different frequencies in fingers and in foot in healthy girls and boys.

Methods

Vibration perception thresholds (VPTs) were measured in 283 healthy (8–20 years), consecutively included, girls (n=146) and boys (n=137); i.e., 269 children after excluding those with diseases or disorders possibly affecting the nervous system. Thresholds were measured in finger pulps of index and little fingers (seven frequencies; 8–500 Hz) and at first and fifth metatarsal head and at heel in the sole of the foot (six frequencies; 8–250 Hz;) using Multi Frequency Tactilometry.

Results

VPTs, divided in six groups by age and gender (i.e., 8–10 years, 11–15 years and 16–20 years), at all three sites in the sole increased with higher frequencies, but without gender differences. Thresholds at 64 and 125 Hz were generally higher at heel compared to metatarsal heads. VPTs in finger pulps of index and little fingers, with no finger differences, had a different pattern with increasing thresholds with frequency, but with lower thresholds at 64 and 125 Hz. Thresholds at lower frequencies were higher in finger pulps, while at higher frequencies VPTs were lower in finger pulps than in the sole of the foot; thus, vibration perception in the sole was better than perception in finger pulps at lower frequencies and opposite at higher frequencies. VPTs were higher among adolescents than in younger children in the foot, while thresholds were lower in the finger pulps among adolescents, particularly in index finger. Thresholds in finger pulps of index and little fingers, particularly at higher frequencies, correlated with each other, which the three sites in the sole also did.

Conclusions

VPTs in fingers and in feet are different as related to frequency in healthy girls and boys. Multi Frequency Tactilometry is a future valuable method to detect neuropathy in children and adolescents.  相似文献

Experiments are sent to space laboratories in order to take advantage of the low-gravity environment. However, it is crucial to appreciate the distinction between the real microgravity environment and "weightlessness" or "simulated microgravity". The microgravity in space laboratories may be of much smaller magnitude than the gravitational acceleration on earth. However, it is not zero, nor even one microg (defined as 1e-6 earth gravity). Moreover, the orientation is not uniaxial, as on earth. The net acceleration that acts on a space experiment arises from, e.g., orbital mechanics, atmospheric drag, and thruster firings, and it can act on the experiments in gravity-like ways. In essence, a well-defined, stable 1 g acceleration on the earth's surface is substituted for a complex array of dynamically changing accelerations with ever-changing frequency content, magnitude and direction. This paper will show measured accelerations on the Shuttle from launch to orbit, as well as the latest measurements on the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS data presented here represent over 34,790 hours of data obtained from June 2002 to April 2003 during Increments 5 and 6 of the ISS construction cycle. The quasisteady acceleration level on the ISS has been measured to be on the order of a few microg during time allotted to microgravity mode. The vibratory acceleration environment spans a rich spectrum from 0.01-300 Hz.  相似文献

For modelling purposes and for evaluation of driver's seat performance in the vertical direction various mechano-mathematical models of the seated human body have been developed and standardized by the ISO. No such models exist hitherto for human body sitting in an upright position in a cushioned seat upper part, used in industrial environment, where the fore-and-aft vibrations play an important role. The interaction with the steering wheel has to be taken into consideration, as well as, the position of the human body upper torso with respect to the cushioned seat back as observed in real driving conditions. This complex problem has to be simplified first to arrive at manageable simpler models, which still reflect the main problem features. In a laboratory study accelerations and forces in x-direction were measured at the seat base during whole-body vibration in the fore-and-aft direction (random signal in the frequency range between 0.3 and 30 Hz, vibration magnitudes 0.28, 0.96, and 2.03 ms(-2) unweighted rms). Thirteen male subjects with body masses between 62.2 and 103.6 kg were chosen for the tests. They sat on a cushioned driver seat with hands on a support and backrest contact in the lumbar region only. Based on these laboratory measurements a linear model of the system-seated human body and cushioned seat in the fore-and-aft direction has been developed. The model accounts for the reaction from the steering wheel. Model parameters have been identified for each subject-measured apparent mass values (modulus and phase). The developed model structure and the averaged parameters can be used for further bio-dynamical research in this field.  相似文献

Whereas gravity has an inspiratory effect in upright subjects, transient upward acceleration is reported to have an expiratory effect. To explore the respiratory effects of transient axial accelerations, we measured axial acceleration at the head and transrespiratory pressure or airflow in five subjects as they were dropped or lifted on a platform. For the first 100 ms, upward acceleration caused a decrease in mouth pressure and inspiratory flow, and downward acceleration caused the opposite. We also simulated these experimental observations by using a computational model of a passive respiratory system based on anatomical data and normal respiratory characteristics. After 100 ms, respiratory airflow in our subjects became highly variable, no longer varying with acceleration. Electromyograms of thoracic and abdominal respiratory muscles showed bursts of activity beginning 40-125 ms after acceleration, suggesting reflex responses responsible for subsequent flow variability. We conclude that, in relaxed subjects, transient upward axial acceleration causes inspiratory airflow and downward acceleration causes expiratory airflow, but that after ~100 ms, reflex activation of respiratory musculature largely determines airflow.  相似文献

Summary Firing behaviour of frog (Rana temporaria) single trochlear motoneurons and multi-unit activity of trochlear nerve were studied during sinusoidal linear accelerations or ramp-hold stimuli (side-up, side-down) in the dark. Frequencies of sinusoidal stimulation ranged from 0.05 Hz to 2 Hz and peak accelerations were between 0.001g and 0.1g.Phase lead of trochlear nerve mass activity relative to imposed acceleration decreased with increasing frequency from 43±10° at 0.1 Hz to 13±6° at 1 Hz for transverse acceleration, and from 37±9° at 0.1 Hz to 1.5±5° at 1 Hz for longitudinal acceleration.The majority of trochlear motoneurons, characterized by short antidromic latencies (<3 ms), had response phases ranging from 52°±6° at 0.05 Hz to 18°±11° at 2 Hz. Their phase behaviour was thus similar to that observed in the nerve multi-unit activity. Response sensitivities typically increased with increasing frequency and showed a clear dependency on stimulus amplitude. In addition, some motoneurons were recorded at antidromic latencies between 3 ms and 6 ms. These units showed less phase lead at frequencies below 0.2 Hz and a rather constant sensitivity in the frequency range tested.The present results together with previous work on primary otolith afferents indicate that information in phasic, phasic-tonic and tonic afferents may be transmitted rather faithfully to motoneurons. This implies that, unlike the case in higher vertebrates, very little central processing occurs in the amphibian maculo-ocular reflex.  相似文献
