The primary structure of the alpha- and beta-chains of the hemoglobin from the Pacific Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens, Pinnipedia) is presented. Sequence analysis revealed only one hemoglobin component whereas two bands were found in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The globin chains were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and the sequences determined by automatic liquid- and gas-phase sequencing of the chains and their tryptic peptides. The alpha-chains show 20 and the beta-chains 12 exchanges compared to the corresponding human chains. In the alpha-chains one heme- and two alpha 1/beta 1-contacts were exchanged whereas in the beta-chains one alpha 1/beta 1-, one alpha 1/beta 2-and one heme-contact are substituted. Compared to Harbour Seal (Phoca vitulina) the Walrus hemoglobin shows 9 amino-acid replacements in the alpha-chains and 5 in the beta-chains. The relation between Pinnipedia and Arctoidea is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Stomach and intestine samples from 21 adult Weddell seals were used to study the diet of these seals from the eastern and southern Weddell Sea coast from January to February 1983 and 1985. Fish occurred in all seals, squid in five, octopods in three and Euphausia crystallorophias in one seal. Pleuragramma antarcticum was the predominant fish in the diet, constituting 61.1% of otoliths in 1983 samples and 93.8% in 1985. Aethotaxis mitopteryx, Dissostichus mawsoni, unidentified Trematomus spp. and channichthyids were also recorded. Size and wet weight of P. antarcticum were calculated from uneroded otoliths, found in 6 seal stomachs with liquid food pulp, collected during early morning hours in 1985. Size distribution of P. antarcticum from individual seals was reasonably constant, ranging between 5.0 and 22.0 cm SL; adult fish from about 14.0 to 19.0 cm SL predominated. P. antarcticum in seals from the southern area had a larger median size (16.5 cm SL), than those from further east (15.5 cm SL). Calculated wet weights of all P. antarcticum from individual seal stomachs ranged between 4.7 and 16.9 kg the mean was 12.8 kg. Comparisons with net-hauls from the southern Gould Bay suggest that Weddell seals feed mainly in deeper water layers (>400 m) where adult P. antarcticum occur at higher densities.  相似文献

Marine mammals are constrained in their foraging behaviour because, as obligate air breathers, they must undertake regular trips to the water surface to satisfy the need for respiratory gas exchange. Maximum underwater endurance time is determined by O2 supply and demand, but this does not necessarily imply that O2 is the main factor regulating individual dive and surface times. This study presents a theoretical analysis of diving performance that emphasizes a key role for CO2 in the proximate control of diving behaviour. Computer simulations, based on a mathematical model of the mammalian cardiorespiratory control system, are used to investigate the influence of swimming to depth and other energetic stresses (feeding, thermogenesis, sleep) on predicted diving behaviour in an average adult Weddell seal. The plausibility of the proposed model is supported by the study, which replicated published observations of natural diving behaviour in this species. It is suggested that diving behaviour is tuned to oscillations in respiratory drive and that behavioural and physiological factors can alter the dynamic characteristics of the system to achieve a highly adaptable reciprocal interaction that blurs the boundary between physiology and behaviour.  相似文献

Ultrastructural observations were made of the non-lactating and lactating mammary gland of the Weddell seal, and measurements of several cell components were compared with those in other species to determine whether there are any morphological modifications within the gland to explain the unusual milk composition and very rapid growth of sucking young in this species.
The mammary parenchyma in non-lactating and lactating Weddell seals is almost identical morphologically to that found in other mammals. Although the relative volumes of most organelles are similar to those in other eutherians, the relative volume of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) is reduced in the Weddell seal. In addition, the absolute and relative volumes of Golgi vacuoles are smaller in the Weddell seal, probably associated with the low lactose and water content of the milk. The synthesis and secretion of milkspecific proteins and fat droplets by mammary secretory cells in the Weddell seal appear to be identical to other eutherians. Relatively small numbers of fat droplets less than 1 μm diameter are present in epithelial cells, alveolar lumina and milk samples, and there is a far greater contribution by large fat droplets to the total fat volume of Weddell seal milk than milk from other mammals.  相似文献

This study describes the distribution of Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddelli in winter (May–September 1999) at the Vestfold Hills, in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Specifically, we describe the spatial extent of haul-out sites in shore–fast sea-ice, commonly referred to as fast-ice. As winter progressed, and the fast-ice grew thick (ca 2 m), most of the inshore holes closed over, and the seals' distribution became restricted to ocean areas beyond land and islands. Using observations from the end of winter only, we fitted Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) to generate resource selection functions, which are models that yield values proportional to the probability of use. The models showed that seal distribution was defined mainly by distance to ice-edge and distance to land. Distance to ice-bergs was also selected for models of some regions. We present the results as maps of the fitted probability of seal presence, predicted by the binomial GAM for offshore regions, both with and without autocorrelation terms. The maps illustrate the expected distribution encompassing most of the observed distribution. On this basis, we hypothesise that propensity for the fast-ice to crack is the major determinant of Weddell seal distribution in winter. Proximity to open water and pack-ice habitats could also influence the distribution of haul-out sites in fast-ice areas. This is the first quantitative study of Weddell seal distribution in winter. Potential for regional variation is discussed.  相似文献

Mammals balance heat dissipation with heat production to maintain core body temperatures independent of their environment. Thermal balance is undoubtedly most challenging for mammals born in polar regions because small body size theoretically results in high surface-area-to-volume ratios (SA:V), which facilitate heat loss (HL). Thus, we examined the ontogeny of thermoregulatory characteristics of an ice-breeding seal (Weddell seal Leptonychotes weddelli). Morphology, blubber thickness, rectal temperature (T(r)), muscle temperature (T(m)), and skin temperatures on the trunk (T(s)) and flipper (T(f)) in 3-5-wk-old pups, yearlings, and adults were measured. Adults maintained the thickest blubber layers, while yearlings had the thinnest; T(r) and T(m) fell within a narrow range, yet T(r) and T(m) decreased significantly with body length. All seals maintained skin temperatures lower than T(r), our index of core body temperature. The T(s)'s were positively correlated with environmental temperatures; conversely, T(f)'s were not. Although pups had the greatest proportion of blubber, their greater SA:V and limited ability to minimize body-to-environment temperature gradients led to the greatest calculated mass-specific HL. This implies that pups relied on elevated metabolic heat production to counter HL. Heat production in pups and yearlings may have been aided by nonshivering thermogenesis in the skeletal muscle via the enhanced muscle mitochondrial densities that have been observed in these segments of this population.  相似文献

Morphological characters of the anisakid ncmatodcs Contracaecum radialurn and C. osculutum from the Weddcll Sea are reviewed. Both species occur in stomachs of scals in high southern latitudes. Thc investigation aims at providing some rcliable criteria for quantitative routine light microscopy. Characters allowing a safe identification of the two spccics arc: spiculcs and tail structures in males; lips, intcrlabia and collar in both sexes. The primary structures of alpha- and beta-chains from the hemoglobin of the Beach Marten (Martes foina, Carnivora) are presented. The globin chains were separated on CM-cellulose in 8M urea buffer. The amino-acid sequences were established by automatic liquid- and gas-phase Edman degradation of the intact chains and the tryptic peptides from oxidized chains. Comparison of the sequences with human hemoglobin shows 21 exchanges in the alpha- and 12 in the beta-chains. The differences concerning heme and interchain contact sites as well as the substitution alpha 77 (EF6)Pro----Ala are discussed. The latter is observed for the first time in a mammalian hemoglobin. The sequences are compared with those of other Carnivora. The beta-chains of Martes foina and Pteronura brasiliensis (Giant Otter) are found to be identical, but their alpha-chains differ in 7 positions. The surprising small numbers of exchanges between the hemoglobin from Beach marten and that from Lesser and Greater Panda are discussed.  相似文献

The alpha-chains show 18 and the beta-chains 13 substitutions compared to human alpha- and beta-chains, respectively. In the alpha-chains one heme- and two alpha 1/beta 1-contacts are exchanged. In the beta-chains the replacements involve one heme-, one alpha 1/beta 1-, and one alpha 1/beta 2-contact. The alpha- and beta-chains of the Common Otter are compared to those of other Carnivora hemoglobins. A total of 41 faeces and 5 vomits of the Weddell seal Leptonychotes weddelli was collected at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, from 14 January to 1 February 1996. The diet indicated by the remains in the samples was diverse and comprised both pelagic and benthic-demersal species. Fish were the most frequent (95.7%) and numerous prey (46.2%), but molluscs were the most important by mass (65.8%). Octopods, mainly Pareledone charcoti, constituted the bulk of the diet (63.1% by mass), but the importance of the remaining molluscs was negligible. Otoliths represented 510 fish of which 491 were identified as belonging to 5 species: Gymnoscopelus nicholsi, Electrona antarctica, Lepidonotothen nudifrons, Gobionotothen gibberifrons and Nototheniops nybelini. The myctophid Gymnoscopelus nicholsi was the most important fish prey, and the contribution of benthic-demersal species was low. However, the importance of that fish was over-estimated since 96% of the specimens were obtained from the five vomits analysed. The biases associated with the faecal analysis technique are discussed. The structure of the kidney of Leptonychotes weddelli was examined using corrosion casts, India ink injection, and histological methods. Some observations were made on the kidney of the crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophagus) and the elephant seal (Mirounga leonina). The kidneys in all three species are reniculate, as in many other marine mammalian species. Features that have not been described previously in a phocid seal are a peripyramidal muscle, and venous drainage characterized by a large extrinsic system and a small intrinsic system. Examination of specialized fornices, relative medullary thickness, and the volumes of juxtamedullary relative to peripheral glomeruli (all of which relate to urine concentrating ability) revealed that each reniculus of Leptonychotes is similar to the unilobar kidney of a small mammal that produces only moderately concentrated urine. The high glomerular volume to cortical volume ratio may be related to high glomerular filtration rates after feeding observed in marine mammals. It is concluded that reniculation is more likely to be related to the large size of most marine mammals than to some factor related directly to the marine environment.  相似文献

The primary structure of the alpha- and beta-chains of hemoglobin from spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta, Hyenidae) is presented. The structure-function relationship is discussed. The separation of the chains directly from hemoglobin was performed by RP-HPLC. After tryptic digestion of the chains, the peptides were isolated by RP-HPLC. Amino-acid sequences were determined by Edman degradation in liquid- and gas-phase sequencers. The alignment of the tryptic peptides was made by homology with human and other Carnivora hemoglobins. The hemoglobin from spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) exhibits in its alpha- and beta-chains 22 and 20 exchanges, respectively, compared to human hemoglobin. In the alpha-chains, two alpha 1 beta 1-contacts are exchanged. In the beta-chains five exchanges involve one alpha 1 beta 1-contact, one alpha 1 beta 2-contact, one heme contact, and two 2,3-DPG-binding sites.  相似文献

The complete primary structure of the alpha- and beta-chains of the hemoglobin of Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is presented. Following cleavage of the heme-protein link and chain separation by RP-HPLC, their amino-acid sequences were determined by Edman degradation in liquid- and gas-phase sequenators. The hemoglobin of Spectacled Bear displays only five amino-acid exchanges to that of Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus, Ursinae) and Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus tibetanus, Ursinae) whereas 8 and 12 replacements, respectively, to Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and Lesser Panda (Ailurus fulgens) can be found. This clearly demonstrates that the Spectacled Bear, the most aberrant bear of the Ursidae, is somewhat intermediate between Pandas and Ursinae.  相似文献

Four species of Phocidae, or true seals, inhabit the waters surrounding the Antarctic continent. These animals are thought to have different diving capabilities. The Weddell seal, Leptonychotes weddelli, is known to be capable of attaining depths up to 600 meters. The respiratiory system of the Weddell seal shows the usual adaptations to an aquatic environment characteristic of other marine. These include lungs that undergo compression acollapse at depths greater than 70 meters; hyaline cartilage in the tracheo-bronchial tree as far as the terminal bronchioles; and large amounts of smooth muscle surrounding the distal-most bronchioles. The collapsible lungs provide a mechanism by which air is forced from the alveoli adjacent to the pulmonary capillary beds thereby preventing the absorption of nitrogen gas into the bloodsteam. The presence of hyaline cartilage throughout most of the tracheo-bronchial tree increases the effective dead air space that accommodates most of the air forced from the collapsed lungs. The smooth muscle surrounding the respiratory bronchioles prevents their collapse while under the pressures of a deep dive. Collapse of the respiratory bronchioles not supported by cartilage would trap air in the lung alveoli during a dive. In addition, large- sac-like "diverticulae" are found in the submucosa throughout the tracheo-bronchial tree. These diverticulae, which open directly into the lumen of the tree, appear to be modified glands whose cells, in most cases, do not appear to be specialized for secretory function. They are most numerous in the more distal bronchi and terminal bronchioles where they are situated on both the luminal and adventitial sides of the hyaline cartilage supporting the walls of the air passages. Diverticulae are not found in the respiratory bronchioles or in the respiratory portion of the lungs.  相似文献

The complete primary structure of the hemoglobin from the adult coati (Nasua nasua rufa) is presented. The erythrocytes contain one hemoglobin component and two globin chains. The isolation of globin chains was achieved by reversed-phase HPLC on a column of Nucleosil-C4. The primary structure of globin chains and tryptic peptides was determined in liquid- and gas-phase sequenators. The sequence of the and -chains of coati compared with those of other Carnivora species.
