Oebalus pugnax (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) damage to rice, Orya savita L., reduces rough and head rice yields, and grain quality. O. pugnax feeds on developing kernels, introducing pathogenic fungi and causing a discoloration of the grain known as "peck." The objective of this study was to determine the stage of rice panicle development most susceptible to O. pugnax attack. During 2005 and 2006, in greenhouse and field experiments, rice plants were caged at the boot stage and then infested with adult or nymphal O. pugnax. Plants were infested during one of three stages of panicle development: heading, milk, or soft dough. Insects were allowed to feed on the plants for the duration of each stage and then killed. After maturation, panicles were harvested, and grain was hulled and milled. Grain weight, percentage of pecky grain, and percentage of whole grain after milling were recorded. No differences were found in the weight of rough, brown, or milled rice infested with O. pugnax during different stages of panicle development. Number of filled grains per cage was not affected by O. pugnax, and number of empty grains per cage was affected in two of four experiments. Higher percentage of peck was found in grain from panicles infested during dough and milk than in grain from panicles infested during heading. Adult O. pugnax caused higher percentage of peck than nymphs in all stages of panicle development. Commercial rice, Oryza sativa L., fields in southeastern Texas were sampled during 2003 and 2004, and visual samples were compared with sweep net samples. Fields were sampled at different stages of panicle development, times of day, and by different operators. Significant differences were found between perimeter and within field sweep net samples, indicating that samples taken 9 m from the field margin overestimate within field Oebalus pugnax (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) populations. Time of day did not significantly affect the number of O. pugnax caught with the sweep net; however, there was a trend to capture more insects during morning than afternoon. For all sampling methods evaluated during this study, O. pugnax was found to have an aggregated spatial pattern at most densities. When comparing sweep net with visual sampling methods, one sweep of the "long stick" and two sweeps of the "sweep stick" correlated well with the sweep net (r2 = 0.639 and r2 = 0.815, respectively). This relationship was not affected by time of day of sampling, stage of panicle development, type of planting or operator. Relative cost-reliability, which incorporates probability of adoption, indicates the visual methods are more cost-reliable than the sweep net for sampling O.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted from 1989 to 1992 to determine the effects of Oebalus ornatus (Sailer) on Cica 8 rice, Oryza sativa L., yield and to study the population dynamics of the insect. The effect of O. ornatus was measured for seven population levels (0, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12, and 24 sexed pairs per 20 panicles) at three stages of grain development (flowering, milk, and soft dough stage). Insect feeding during the flowering and milk stages of grain development caused more damage than feeding during the soft dough stage. The action threshold was calculated to be 14 O. ornatus adults per square meter for the flowering and milk stages and 67 for the soft dough stage of grain maturity. Population densities that would reduce rice yield in southwestern Colombia were not observed during the 3 yr of the study.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants were subjected to mild water stress during grain filling at milk (early, medium, and late) and dough (early, soft, hard) stages. The grains harvested from stressed plants were subjected to low temperature stress of 10 °C for 24 h in presence or absence of 1 mM CaCl2, and embryos were examined for oxidative injury. The embryos of grains water stressed at milk and soft dough stages showed lowest contents of H2O2 and malondialdehyde and highest membrane stability index, ascorbic acid content, and activities of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase as compared to control embryos or water-stressed at other stages. Presence of Ca2+ in the medium reduced H2O2 and malondialdehyde content and increased ascorbic acid content, and catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities.  相似文献

This study evaluated the digestibility of whole-crop cereal silage (WCCS) made from oats and six-rowed barley harvested at the heading, early milk and early dough stages, and two-rowed barley harvested at the early milk and early dough stages of maturity. The eight WCCSs were fed to 32 Swedish Red heifers in a changeover design over three periods of 28 days each. The heifers were first fed ad libitum for 17 days and then at 0.95 of ad libitum for 11 days of each period. During the last 5 days all faeces and orts were collected to determine the digestibility of the silages. Only the maturity stage effect was significant for the WCCS organic matter (OM) digestibility and the average OM digestibility was higher at the heading stage (698 g/kg) than at early milk (647 g/kg) and early dough (652 g/kg) stages of maturity. For neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility the crop × maturity stage effect was significant. The NDF digestibility decreased from the heading to the early milk stage for both six-rowed barley (746 to 607 g/kg) and oats (698 to 596 g/kg). There was no further significant decrease in NDF digestibility for six-rowed barley at the early dough stage (577 g/kg), but for two-rowed barley it decreased from the early milk (682 g/kg) to the early dough (573 g/kg) stage, and also for oats the NDF digestibility was lowest at the early dough stage (507 g/kg). The decrease in NDF digestibility during maturation was to a large extent compensated by an increase in starch concentration in the crops. The starch digestibility was lower for six-rowed barley at early dough stage (948 g/kg) than at early milk stage (977 g/kg), and was also lower compared with oats (979 g/kg) at early dough stage. The average crude protein (CP) digestibility was higher at the heading (646 g/kg) and the early milk (642 g/kg) stages than at the early dough stage (599 g/kg), and oats had higher average CP digestibility (650 g/kg) than six-rowed (613 g/kg) and two-rowed (624 g/kg) barley. Delaying the harvest of WCCS from the heading to the early milk and dough stage of maturity will decrease the OM digestibility; as a result there is a decreased NDF digestibility.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the damage caused in the field by Tibraca limbativentris Stål adults at different levels of infestation (0, 1, 2, and 4 stink bugs) per three rice plants during three growth stages (V8, V13, and R4 stages) of upland rice cultivated in southwestern of Pará State, Amazon Rainforest region, Brazil. Heading time (panicle exertion) was affected by T. limbativentris infestations mainly in the vegetative stage and the whiteheads percentage in treatments ranged from 18.2 to 38%. The dead hearts percentages varied between 0 and 21.5%, and the mean number of primary branches (ramifications) ranged from 5.9?±?0.4 to 12.3?±?0.2. The number of empty spikelets was only affected in infestations with four insects/three plants, while the quantity of filled grains per panicle was affected only when infestations occurred during the vegetative stage. The total number of spikelets (filled?+?empty) per panicle decreased significantly in all phenological stages, and the percentage of damage ranged from 17 to 44% among treatments. Based on the proportion of damage observed, we suggest doubling the number of insects presently used as action threshold to 2 and 4 stink bugs per 15 stalks sampled for the vegetative stage, and of 1 or 2 stink bugs per 15 stalks sampled at the beginning of reproductive stage (R3/R4). Also, the field should be monitored during the entire vegetative stage, since most damage was observed in this phenological stage.  相似文献

Rotations, tillage, and fertilizer treatments can affect yield, costs, and profitability in sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, depending on their effects on pests. Rotation or planting different crops reduces soil erosion and pests that build up when a field is planted to the same crop each year. Minimum tillage reduces the number of trips over a field, lessening soil compaction and reducing costs. We examined the effects of fertilizer, tillage, and rotation with cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., on sorghum head insects during three sampling periods each year from 2000 to 2003. We found that fertilizer treatments did not affect pests or predators. Also, predators were unaffected by rotation and tillage, which some years affected Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) and Oebalus pugnax (F.), both pests that feed on developing sorghum kernels, thereby reducing yield. In 2000, H. zea densities were greater in continuous sorghum, regardless of tillage practice, than in sorghum-cotton rotation. However, in 2003, H. zea densities were greater in minimum tillage plots within sorghum- cotton rotation than minimum tillage plots within continuous sorghum. In 2000, in sorghum- cotton rotation, O. pugnax densities were greater in minimum tillage than conventional tillage plots, whereas in continuous sorghum the opposite was true, O. pugnax were greater in conventional tillage. Also, O. pugnax were greater in sorghum- cotton rotation than in continuous sorghum. In 2002, O. pugnax densities were greater in conventional than minimum tillage plots. These results suggest that rotation of sorghum with cotton can sometimes reduce H. zea, but this reduction may occur with increased density of O. pugnax. Also, reducing tillage may reduce O. pugnax in some instances.  相似文献

Fusarium head blight is a major concern for wheat production worldwide. The fungi that cause the disease may infect head tissues from flowering to late stages of kernel development, but a better understanding of the influence of the time of infection on grain weight reduction and mycotoxin accumulation resulting from the infection process is needed. We investigated the influence of wheat reproductive stage at the time of inoculation on disease and grain quality parameters, especially production of deoxynivalenol (DON) in mature grains. Heads of Norm wheat were spray inoculated with a macroconidial suspension of a DON‐producing isolate of Fusarium graminearum at each of six reproductive stages from flowering to hard dough. Plants were incubated in a mist chamber for 48 h and then moved to the greenhouse until maturity. Norm wheat was susceptible at all stages inoculated but the highest grain weight reduction and DON accumulation occurred in plants inoculated past flowering to late milk stages. However, high incidences of kernel infection and significant levels of DON accumulation resulted from inoculations as late as the hard dough stage, even though there was no corresponding reduction in grain weight compared to non‐inoculated plants. The occurrence of commercially significant levels of DON in plump, high‐yielding wheat may result from infections that occur during favourable environments well after the flowering stages. Late infection and DON production should therefore be a future research focus for wheat breeding and integrated management of FHB and an important consideration for grading systems that employ the presence of visibly damaged kernels as a means of estimating DON content of wheat.  相似文献

The dynamics of stomatal resistance and osmotic adjustment in response to plant water deficits and stage of physiological development was studied in the leaves of spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L., GWO 1809). Plants were germinated and grown in pots in a growth chamber at the Duke University Phytotron to four physiological stages of development (4th leaf, 7th leaf, anthesis, and soft dough), during which time stomatal resistance, total water potential and osmotic potential were measured on the last fully developed leaf of water stressed and non-stressed plants. Pressure potential was obtained by difference. Stomatal closure of the abaxial and adaxial surfaces were independent of each other, each having a different critical total water potential. The total water potential required to close the stomata on the last fully developed leaf were different at different stages of physiological development, decreasing as the plants grew older. The development of osmoregulation in wheat allows the closure of stomata during the vegetative stage at a high total water potential, but insures that stomata remain open from anthesis through the ear filling period to a lower total water potential.  相似文献

The duration of development and survival of Oscinella frit, O. nitidissima and O. nigerrima at different growth stages of several plant species was investigated in the laboratory. The effect of the infestation on the growth of plants was also quantified. Survival of O. frit larvae was significantly lower (P < 0.01) on barley than on either oats or wheat, between which there was no significant difference. Survival was usually highest when plants were infested at the two-leaf stage and lowest when plants were infested at the five-leaf stage. The duration of development of both male and female O. frit was longer on barley than on either oats or wheat and generally increased when older plants were infested. The proportion of male flies was greatest when older plants were infested. Duration of development and survival of O. frit was similar on oats and Lolium multiflorum, but larvae did not survive on Dactylis glomerata. Of the other Oscinella species, O. nitidissima larvae did not survive on oats, wheat and barley and O. nigerrima larvae did not survive on either oats or barley. The main shoots of cereal plants infested at the two-, three- or four-leaf stages were rapidly killed by O. frit larvae whereas many of those infested at the five-leaf stage continued to grow slowly. In response to attack proportionately more tillers were produced by oat plants than by either wheat or barley plants. When cereals were infested with O. nigerrima larvae the central shoots were damaged, but most recovered and continued to grow. Damage symptoms were most obvious when cereals were infested at the two-leaf stage, oats being more severely affected than either wheat or barley.  相似文献

雌雄异株植物资源分配模式上往往表现出显著的性别二态性,但在叶片光合及功能性状上是否有差异目前仍未有定论,且与发育阶段的关系尚不明确。阐明上述问题,能够进一步了解雌雄异株植物的生理生态特征,并为理解性别对性二态植物生长发育的影响机制提供理论依据。以雌雄异株绒毛白蜡(Fraxinus velutina Torr.)为研究对象,针对不同发育阶段不同性别植株进行光合特征及叶功能性状测定,采用双因素方差分析了不同发育阶段下雌雄植株光合能力及叶功能性状的性别间差异,采用Pearson检验了雌雄植株各叶功能性状之间的相关性,并采用标准化主轴分析(Standardized major axis regression, SMA)分析不同性别植株净光合速率与叶功能性状的相关性。结果表明性别和发育阶段显著影响植物个体的光合能力和叶功能性状。总体而言,雄树在坐果期和果实成熟期均表现出更强的净光合速率(Pn)、更高的比叶面积(SLA)、叶绿素含量(Chl)和叶氮含量(LNC);而雌树在果实膨大期表现出更强Pn、SLA和Chl。雌雄性别内Pn与SLA、Chl和LNC间均呈显著正相关(P<0.05),雄树的S...  相似文献

Genetically engineered corn hybrids that contain a cry gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) are gaining popularity for controlling the corn pest Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner). Continuous use of Bt corn, however, could select for O. nubilalis that are resistant to this corn. Monitoring for insect resistance is important, because it could help maintain the Bt technology. A possible monitoring method is to collect larval insects in commercial drying bins after harvest from Bt seed production fields. A drawback to this method is that these collections may be contaminated by insects that moved as later instars from severed non-Bt male rows into the adjacent Bt female rows. These larvae have little to no exposure to Bt toxin, resulting in possible "false positives." The objectives of this study were to first find which combination of planting and severing dates produces the least number of larvae that move from non-Bt male plants to Bt female plants and to assess O. nubilalis larval movement from severed non-Bt male rows to Bt female rows. Field studies in 2002 and 2003 were designed to simulate a hybrid seed production field. Results suggest that movement of O. nubilalis larvae from male corn is minimized when corn is planted early and male plants are severed by 2 wk post-anthesis. This reduces the likelihood of false positives by reducing the number of susceptible larvae moving between Bt and non-Bt plants. Also, larvae moved to all four female rows that were adjacent to the severed rows, but there were significantly more larvae found in the closest row compared with the other three. These results could be used to develop a monitoring program to find O. nubilalis larvae with resistance to Bt corn in field populations of O. nubilalis.  相似文献

In Opuntia stenopetala, flowers initiate as hermaphrodite; however, at maturity, only the stamens in male flowers and the gynoecium in female flowers become functional. At early developmental stages, growth and morphogenesis of the gynoecium in male flowers cease, forming a short style lacking stigmatic tissue at maturity. Here, an analysis of the masculinization process of this species and its relationship with auxin metabolism during gynoecium morphogenesis is presented. Histological analysis and scanning electron microscopy were performed; auxin levels were immunoanalyzed and exogenous auxin was applied to developing gynoecia. Male flower style-tissue patterning revealed morphological defects in the vascular bundles, stylar canal, and transmitting tissue. These features are similar to those observed in Arabidopsis thaliana mutant plants affected in auxin transport, metabolism, or signaling. Notably, when comparing auxin levels between male and female gynoecia from O. stenopetala at an early developmental stage, we found that they were particularly low in the male gynoecium. Consequently, exogenous auxin application on male gynoecia partially restored the defects of gynoecium development. We therefore hypothesize that, the arrest in male flower gynoecia patterning could be related to altered auxin homeostasis; alternatively, the addition of auxin could compensate for the lack of another unknown factor affecting male flower gynoecium development.  相似文献

Flowering phenology and flowering dynamics of female and male inflorescences of Salix viminalis Linn. in Beijing were observed in 2015 and 2016, and changes in pollen activity and stigma receptivity were also investigated. The results show that early flowering stage of S. viminalis in Beijing is happened in early?March, flowering period is 11-18 d, and flowering pattern is the first opening type of male flower. Flowering period of single inflorescence in male and female plants is 10-15 d and 8-10 d, respectively, which can be divided into five stages:emerging color stage, initial flowering stage, half flowering stage, full flowering stage and withered stage. Flowering date of male plant is earlier about 3-4 d than that of female plant. However, the difference of full flowering stage between male and female plants is only 1 d. Pollen germination rate and stigma receptivity show a trend of firstly increasing then decreasing during blossom process. Pollen germination rate reaches the highest of 72% at full flowering stage, and stigma receptivity is more than 90% at half and full flowering stages. Therefore, it is suggested that pollen collection and pollination in mid?March can improve success rate of cross breeding of S. viminalis.  相似文献

采用体视显微镜、石蜡切片和树脂切片技术对栝楼(Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim.)不同性别花芽分化发育时期的外部形态和内部解剖结构进行了观察。结果显示,栝楼花为雌雄异株,仅有雌花、雄花两种性别分化,且雄花的发育速度明显快于雌花的发育速度。栝楼雌雄花芽长0.2 mm左右已完成性别分化;栝楼雄花为单性花,分化过程可分为6个时期,整个发育过程仅见雄蕊原基的分化及生长。栝楼雌花为"两性花",分化过程可分为7个时期,存在雌蕊和雄蕊共同发育阶段,后期雄蕊发育败退。本研究明确了不同性别栝楼花芽发育发生的各个阶段、形态变化特点、外部形态变化特征以及雌雄花芽的分化差异,建立了雌雄花芽内部结构分化与外部形态之间相关性,为栝楼早期幼苗鉴定及性别分化研究提供了一定的参考。  相似文献

Soluble sugars, proline, total chlorophyll contents and electrolyte leakage were measured in two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars KRL 1-4 and HD 2009 at different growth stages [crown root initiation (CRI), flowering, and soft dough] under short term salinity (NaCl, CaCl2 and Na2SO4). In control plants sugar contents were maximum at flowering stage. Proline and sugar concentrations increased in both cultivars under salinity with a maximum increase at CRI. Electrolyte leakage increased and chlorophyll content decreased with the plant age. A sharp increase of electrolyte leakage was noticed at salinity of 10 and 15 dS m–1 in HD 2009 and KRL 1-4, respectively. The short-term salinity at CRI stage proved more detrimental as compared to salinity at flowering and soft dough stages in term of all biochemical changes induced. In wheat, plant resistance to salinity increased with the age of plant. The cultivar KRL 1-4 performed better under salinity as compared to HD 2009.  相似文献

The content of endogenous cytokinins has been analysed in leaf and inflorescence extracts of male and female R. acetosella plants, using gas chromatography. Plant parts were extracted at four stages of development: leaves of juvenile plants, leaves of adult plants at the time of flower initiation and in full bloom, and upper internodes of the inflorescence stalks. Cytokinins with characteristics similar to isopentenyl adenine and adenosin, zeatin, zeatin riboside, and a bound form of zeatin, were all found in the extracts. The developmental events of florets and a critical stage for sex determination in two wild-rice populations (Zizania palustris cv. Franklin and Zizania palustris cv. K-2Pi) have been identified. Formation of bisexual florets precedes the development of both male and female florets. Developmental indicators, established by measuring the length of florets and panicles, indicate that the critical stage for sex determination occurs when floret and panicle lengths are 1-2 mm and 3 cm, respectively. The stage of floret development at which sex determination occurs is the same in the two investigated wild-rice populations. Organ suppression in bisexual florets is an essential step for sex determination during the formation of unisexual florets. Histological examination of suppressed stamens or pistils in unisexual florets of wild-rice indicates that cell death does not occur during sex determination. In addition, the length of anthers and pistils in bisexual florets indicates that floral development in the transition zone is normal when compared with the male florets in the male spikelets and female florets in the female spikelets.  相似文献

The effects on water status and growth of controlled cycles of water stress applied at various stages of development were studied on a semi-dwarf spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The plants were grown in controlled environment chambers of the Duke University Phytetron at 24/18°C with a 12-h photo-period at about 600 μE m?2 s?1. Groups of plants were subjected to severe water stress by withholding irrigation, beginning at the 7th leaf, early anthesis, or early dough stages of development. A second cycle started 9 to 13 days after termination of the first cycle and maintained until the flag leaf water potential reached –25 bars at each of the growth stages. The lower leaves showed sign of wilting as indicated by curling in the first drying cycle at –7 bars and in the second cycle at –9 bars of leaf water potential during all stages of growth. Although these leaves recovered completely upon rewatering, onset of senescence was accelerated by three days in stressed plants. A preliminary drying cycle did not increase the ability of the plants to withstand subsequent stress because of severity of stress. Water stress of –25 bars at all three stages of growth reduced seed yield. The reduction was greater when a second stress cycle was also applied. Stress applied during early anthesis stage produced the smallest and the least number of seeds. The lack of osmotic adjustment probably was due to very rapid and severe development of water stress.  相似文献
