The genus Lijndenia Zoll. & Mor. is re–established and emended to include four species, L. laurina Zoll. & Mor. from W Malesia and Java, L. capitellata (Arn.) Bremer from Ceylon, L. gardneri (Thw.) Leaf death due to freezing was examined for four, co-occurring species of chaparral shrubs from the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California, Rhus laurina (= Malosma laurina), R. ovata, Ceanothus megacarpus, and C. spinosus. Measurements were made on seedlings vs. adults for all species, and for Rhus spp. in winter vs. summer, and at a warm vs. a cold site. We used four methods to determine the temperature for 50% change in activity or cell death (LT(50)) of leaves: (1) electrical conductivity (electrolyte leakage into a bathing solution), (2) photosynthetic fluorescent capacity (Fv/Fm), (3) percentage of palisade mesophyll cells stained by fluorescein diacetate vital stain, and (4) visual score of leaf color (Munsell color chart). In all four species seedlings were found to be more sensitive to freezing temperatures than were adults by 1°-3°C. For adults the LT(50) ranged from -5°C for Rhus laurina in the summer to -16°C for Rhus ovata in the winter. The LT(50) of R. ovata located at a colder inland site was 4C lower than R. ovata at the warmer coastal site just 4 km apart, suggesting ecotypic differences between R. ovata at the two sites. Both R. laurina and R. ovata underwent significant winter hardening. At the cold site, R. ovata acclimated by 6°C on average, while R. laurina acclimated by only 3°C. These results were consistent with species distributions and with field observations of differential shoot dieback between these two congeneric species after a natural freeze-thaw event in the Santa Monica Mountains.  相似文献

Seeds and embryos in 12 Ceylonese species of Memecylon are of three types with 1) cotyledons wrinkled and hypocotyl long, 2) cotyledons rolled and hypocotyl short, and 3) cotyledons fleshy and hypocotyl short. The first type is common in Memecylon and it occurs e.g. in M. capitellatum , the type species. The second type is found in M. arnottianum and M. gardneri as well as in some species of Spathandra , an African genus considered to be vaguely defined. In a greenhouse experiment, seedling survival of two oak species (Quercus rugosa and Q. laurina) was greatly affected by the excision of cotyledons 1 mo after germination, with a greater impact on Q. laurina. The effect of seed size was also significant for both species, with a positive correlation between seed mass and survival and growth. The effect of cotyledon excision on seedling growth persisted throughout the first growing season in Q. rugosa and was not analyzed for Q. laurina due to the low number of seedlings that survived cotyledon excision. Seed size significantly affected seedling height, diameter, leaf area, and biomass at 6 mo. Seed size and cotyledon retention affected the ability of Q. rugosa to recover from herbivory, as both factors had a significant effect on relative growth rates after aerial biomass removal. The results show that seedlings originating from large seeds can better endure loss of cotyledons and aerial biomass and thus are better equipped to confront stress early in their lives.  相似文献

We analysed genetic diversity across the natural populations of three montane plant species in the Western Ghats, India; Symplocos laurina, Gaultheria fragrantissima and Eurya nitida using intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. These markers revealed genetic diversity within the populations of these plants from Nilgiri and also between two populations of S. laurina from Nilgiri and Amboli. Genetic variation within and between populations was analysed using various parameters such as total heterozygosity (HT), heterozygosity within population (HS), diversity between populations (DST), coefficient of population differentiation (GST), genetic distance (D) and gene flow (Nm). Total heterozygosity (HT) was higher for S. laurina (0.238) than for G. fragrantissima (0.172) and E. nitida (0.182). Two populations of S. laurina, separated by > 1000 km, showed a high within-population variation (53.7%) and a low gene flow (Nm = 0.447). upgma phenograms depicted a tendency of accessions to group according to their geographical locations in all the three plant species. The insight gained into the genetic structure of these plant populations might have implications in developing in situ and ex situ conservation strategies.  相似文献

Studies of rain-wash effects on pollen have shown that flower structures can protect susceptible pollen from rain. It remains unclear, however, how a thin corolla can withstand external force and perform its protective function. The sclereids in petals of several species of Camellia (Theaceae) were anatomically investigated to determine their mechanical properties. To examine the effects of changing physical environment on the occurrence of sclereids in petals, sclereid density in petals of six species, including wild samples from different rainfall zones and samples from a greenhouse under mild conditions without wind and rain, were examined and statistically analysed. The results showed that the occurrence of sclereids in petals varied with physical environment. The number of sclereids in the same species increased with the increasing rainfall. There were abundant sclereids in petals of the wild species, but few or no sclereids in species cultivated in the greenhouse. Moreover, the anatomical features of sclereids, especially the unique distribution pattern that has not hitherto been described, were correlated with external environmental pressures. Our observations reveal a novel mechanical system in the corolla and provide further evidence for the hypothesis that flower structures may protect rain-susceptible pollen.  相似文献

The response to freeze-thaw stress was examined for two co-occurring evergreen species, Malosma laurina and Rhus ovata. Laboratory and field experiments on adults and seedlings were made in the spring and winter in 1996 and again on adults in 2003 and 2004. Laboratory and field results indicated that the stem xylem for adults of M. laurina and R. ovata were similarly susceptible to freezing-induced cavitation (percentage loss of conductivity = 92 ± 2.6% for R. ovata and 90 ± 4.2% for M. laurina at ≤ -6°C). In contrast, leaves of M. laurina were more susceptible to freezing injury than leaves of R. ovata. Among seedlings in the field, leaves of M. laurina exhibited freezing injury at -4°C and total shoot mortality at -7.2°C, whereas co-occurring seedlings of R. ovata were uninjured. Surprisingly, R. ovata tolerates high levels of freezing-induced xylem embolism in the field, an apparently rare condition among evergreen plants. Rhus ovata avoids desiccation when xylem embolism is high by exhibiting low minimum leaf conductance compared to M. laurina. These results suggest a link between minimum leaf conductance and stem hydraulics as a mechanism permitting the persistence of an evergreen leaf habit in freezing environments.  相似文献

The stem and root anatomy of G. andersonii, G. macrophyllus and G. velutinus from the peat-swamps of Sarawak is compared. Sufficient anatomical differences exist to differentiate the four species. The main distinguishing anatomical features between the stems are the cork cells, the nature and relative quantity of cortical sclereids and the presence or absence of lignified pith parenchyma. In differentiating between the roots of G. andersonii, G. macrophyllus and G. malayanus. the principal features are the cork cells and the relative quantity of cortical sclereids. In addition, the medullary rays of G. macrophyllus root in transverse sections are noticeably broader in the xylem towards the phloem than those of the other species.  相似文献

The foliar anatomy of 15 Malaysian species of Chionanthus and 3 species of Olea is described and compared with particular reference to sclereids. The anatomy of the two genera is similar except that Chionanthus shows a wider range in sclereid form, eight kinds ofsclereid are recorded. Filiform sclereids are present in all Olea species and most Chionanthus species examined, additional kinds ofsclereid found in these Chionanthus species include astrosclereids, dendrosclereids, osteosclereids and polymorphic sclereids, with brachysclereids of several forms in the petiole. Quantity of sclereids is not related to coriaceousness, which is determined by leaf thickness. Anatomical characters do not support any major grouping of species within Chionanthus and provide further evidence that the sections, Eulinocitra and Ceranthus , are untenable. The distinction between the lepidote scales of Olea and the peltate hairs common to all oleaceous genera is discussed.  相似文献

Quercus rugosa and Q.laurina are species that presents a wide geographical distribution range in temperate forests of Mexico. Oak canopies contain a considerable portion of arthropod diversity and the arthropods fauna fulfill a wide variety of ecological roles. We examined the effect of oak species and seasonal changes on some community structure parameters (diversity, composition, similarity, biomass, rare species, and density of arthropod fauna) of canopy arthropods. In total, 40 oak canopies were fogged during rainy and dry season. A total of 614 identified arthropod morphospecies were recognized belonging to 22 orders associated with tree canopies. A separation of host tree species during both seasons, suggesting a different community structure on host plants species was demonstrated by the principal component analyses (PCA), therefore, differences between oak species results in phenotypes that structure the composition of the arthropod community. Q.laurina registered the highest densities, diversity index and number of rare species in comparison with Q.rugosa. While arthropod biomass showed an inverse pattern. Trees more close to one another (spatial distance) register a more similar canopy arthropod fauna. This study suggests that the trees of Q.laurina could act as a center of biodiversity by the accumulation of arthropod fauna with a considerable number of rare species, which presents wide ecological roles or is involved in critical processes that maintain forest ecosystems[Current Zoology 55(2):132-144,2009].  相似文献

Stems of Eulychnia (a genus of six to nine species of candelabriform or arborescent cacti) have a parenchymatic cortex with two distinct regions. The outer chlorenchymatic layer is characterized by a conspicuous parallel striping, whereas the inner cortex region devoid of chlorophyll has a coarsely granular aspect. Stem samples from nine accessions, collected in the field or taken from cultivation, were studied from resin-embedded microtome sections and maceration. Two different forms of lignified sclereids were found dispersed in the cortex and the pith. The sclereids of the outer palisade-like cortex layer are distinctly elongated and strictly oriented at right angle to the stem surface, whereas those of the inner cortex and pith are globular or subglobular and conspicuously enlarged compared with the surrounding parenchyma cells. The ontogeny of the sclereids was studied from stem samples of different ages. Formation of the secondary cell walls starts only after cell growth is completed. A screening of numerous South American cacti for the presence of idioblastic sclereids showed that these structures are unique for the genus Eulychnia. Finally, functional aspects of the sclereids are shortly discussed. It is assumed that the sclereids contribute to the mechanical support and reinforcement of the plants.  相似文献

Goldenb. & Meirelles sp. nov. can be distinguished from the other species in the genus by its large stomatal crypts (the largest ones in the genus), columnar sclereids, tetramerous flowers and calyx closed in bud. Digestive endoprotease activities of the coconut palm weevil, Homalinotus coriaceus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), were characterized based on the ability of gut extracts to hydrolyze specific synthetic substrates, optimal pH, and hydrolysis sensitivity to protease inhibitors. Trypsin-like proteinases were major enzymes for H. coriaceus, with minor activity by chymotrypsin proteinases. More importantly, gut proteinases of H. coriaceus were inhibited by trypsin inhibitor from Inga laurina seeds. In addition, a serine proteinase inhibitor from I. laurina seeds demonstrated significant reduction of growth of H. coriaceus larvae after feeding on inhibitor incorporated artificial diets. Dietary utilization experiments show that 0.05% I. laurina trypsin inhibitor, incorporated into an artificial diet, decreases the consumption rate and fecal production of H. coriaceus larvae. We have constructed a three-dimensional model of the trypsin inhibitor complexed with trypsin. The model was built based on its comparative homology with soybean trypsin inhibitor. Trypsin inhibitor of I. laurina shows structural features characteristic of the Kunitz type trypsin inhibitor. In summary, these findings contribute to the development of biotechnological tools such as transgenic plants with enhanced resistance to insect pests.  相似文献

An interesting anatomic feature of Rauwolfia is the occurrence of a remarkable type of sclereid in the stem and root. The initials of the sclereids in the stem arise in the ground tissue element of the pith in a region between 50 and 70μ below the surface of the shoot apex. This region of the shoot remains surrounded by a whorl of either 3 or 4 leaves. Sclereids initiate in succession in association with each whorl of leaves. Thus, the sclereids are restricted to the nodes. The sclereids in the stem arise as a primary element of the shoot from the ground tissue of the pith. In the root, they differentiate from the cells of the phelloderm and are secondary in origin. Morphologically, the sclereids in these 2 organs are basically the same, except that the sclereids in the stem are larger in size than those in the root. A solitary cell, or 2 to several cells in a longitudinal cell file (originated from a single mother cell), may differentiate into sclereid initials. The growth of the sclereids through relatively compact ground tissue of the pith is possibly accomplished by a combination of gliding growth and apical intrusive process. The sclereid initials grow rapidly and force their way between the parenchymatous cells. As a result, the neighboring cells lose their original surface contacts. Sclereids increase in size rapidly, and, therefore, very enlarged sclereids with thin primary walls may be observed in the second node. They mature progressively in basipetal direction in the subjacent nodes. In the fifth or sixth node, mature sclereids with massive secondary walls are most common. The secondary walls of sclereids contain much lignin as determined by the phloroglucinol-HCl test. The walls of sclereids at maturity show a variable number of lamellae ranging from 10 to 15 in the lateral walls. A remarkable feature of the sclereids is their canal-like pits in the secondary walls. Two adjacent pits may coalesce uniquely to form a Y-like configuration directed centrifugally from the lumen of the sclereids. The sclereids are ventrically symmetrical, joined end-to-end by their transverse walls like 2 superimposed young fibers.  相似文献

I960.—The “diffused” idioblastic sclereids develop in the leaves of Nymphaea odorata Ait. during periods when leaves are forming on the shoot apex, and they are initiated by cells which are differentiated from other cells of the fundamental tissue by nuclear size. The ontogeny of the sclereids is similar in most cases, but differences are apparent among petiolar, laminar and stipular types, especially, when the adult morphology is considered. At maturity, the sclereids are usually pitted in the central portion, and they do not show “polarity” in the leaf or orientation near the tracheary elements, which occur in the same tissue. The “spicule-like” protuberances and the angular cross-sectional shape of the stipular sclereids are interpreted as evidence that growth of these sclereids was restricted as compared to other types of sclereids which were not restricted.  相似文献
