Ascophyllum nodosum L. dominates rocky intertidal shores throughout the temperate North Atlantic. Six microsatellite loci were developed for A. nodosum using enriched libraries. The number of alleles ranged from 9 to 24 and heterozygosities from 0.2213 to 0.7785. Ascophyllum is monotypic. There was no cross‐reactivity observed with Fucus serratus, F. vesiculosus or F. evanescens.  相似文献

Field and culture studies on fucoid alga of the upper shore showed that their lower limits of distribution were determined largely by interspecific competition. Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dcne. et Thur., which is strictly confined to the highest algal zone, grew much more slowly, both in culture and on the shore, than did Fucus spiralis L., which occupies the zone immediately below Pelvetia. When transplanted to the Fucus spiralis zone, macroscopic Pelvetia thalli grew normally, but Pelvetia zygotes which germinated within this zone reached macroscopic size only when competing Fucus spiralis was repeatedly removed. Both species required high light levels to grow in culture, yet their embryos remained viable for long periods in total darkness. Thus, Pelvetia cannot grow in the shade of Fucus spiralis, but actual removal of the Pelvetia germlings from the Fucus spiralis zone must be affected by some other factor.F. spiralis grew vigorously when transplanted to M.T.L., a level at which it is normally rare. In culture, its embryos grew more slowly than those of the species found lower on the shore such as F. vesiculosus L. and F. serratus L.; hence interspecific competition may again be involvedYoung Ascophyltum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. plants grew almost as slowly as those of Pelvetia, yet Ascophyllum dominates the middle shore. In culture it showed only slightly greater tolerance of low light intensity than other fucoids but, unlike Pelvetia, persisted and grew beneath a Fucus canopy in the field. The possibility that differences in life history and palatibility to grazing molluscs contribute to the disparate competitive abilities of Pelvetia and Ascophyllum is discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis In Nova Scotia the annual harvest of the intertidal seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum exceeds 20 000 tons. This study investigated the possible impact of removal of the seaweed on intertidal abundance of fishes and their gut contents. At sites near Lower Argyle, Nova Scotia, absolute abundance of fish in small areas with Ascophyllum removed and intact was determined with pop-up seines. Gut contents were investigated from fish collected with the seines and with trammel nets. Number and weight of fish were not significantly different between cleared and intact areas and averaged 4.6 individuals and 160 g per 400 m2 during June to October. Cunner and sculpins had more food in their guts when leaving than when entering the intertidal, but only cunner had more food in their stomachs when leaving intact areas than when leaving cleared areas. Most fish captured in the intertidal were small (< 15 cm) and of no commercial value, and the numbers of commercial species were too low to be of much value. Numbers of fish in the intertidal was significantly lower than in the shallow subtidal. This study provided no evidence for adverse effects of the removal of patches of Ascophyllum on fishes.  相似文献

Estuarine populations of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. var. spiralis Farlow from the Piscataqua River of the Great Bay Estuary System (New Hampshire-Maine) showed their maximum growth during the spring and fall of two consecutive years. The maximum growth rates (in terms of elongation) for Ascophyllum and Fucus were 3.5 and 3.6 cm/month, respectively, during 1973, and 3.2 and 2.3 cm/month in 1974. The average length of whole Fucus fronds showed a trend towards longer plants during the early spring and late summer-fall, while the average weight was significantly greater in the spring and early summer. Ascophyllum showed a distinct reproductive periodicity, with a maximum in March or April of both years; after the spring period of maximum reproduction, the receptacles dehisced simultaneously and the plants were vegetative during the summer. The reproductive periodicity of Fucus was not so distinct as that of Ascophyllum; even so, its maximum reproduction was in April of both years. The level of reproduction for Ascophyllum populations was three times greater in 1974 than in 1973. The reproduction and growth of the two fucoid algae are related to seasonal variations in temperature and light.  相似文献

Stable isotopes were used to examine the origin of organic matter in Icelandic Ascophyllum-based habitats, the role of different organic matters in filling intertidal food webs and the food preferences of the most abundant suspension feeders, grazers and predators. We selected three intertidal sites on the SW coast of Iceland where we sampled in early September 2004, organic matter sources (POM, SOM and most abundant primary producers, A. nodosum and F. vesciculosus) and the most abundant macrofauna species (barnacles, mussels, gastropods, sponge and crabs). Even though the primary production (Ascophyllum-based) was the same at the three study sites, the isotopic composition of common-among-sites organisms varied due to local differences in the origin of available POM and SOM and in food web structures.  相似文献

At the rocky island of Helgoland (North Sea), the distribution and abundances of intertidal communities were assessed and the effects of wave exposure and tidal height on the spatial distribution patterns of the communities were evaluated. Macroalgae and invertebrates were sampled quantitatively along line transects in three intertidal locations, a semi-exposed, an exposed and a sheltered one. The semi-exposed location was characterised by (1) Ulva spp. at the high intertidal (Ulva-community), (2) mussels and periwinkles at the mid intertidal (Mytilus-community) and (3) Corallina officinalis and mainly the large brown alga Fucus serratus at the low intertidal (Fucus-community). The exposed location encompassed the mid and low intertidal; at both zones the Fucus-community occurred. The sheltered location was characterised by (1) barnacles (Balanus-community) and (2) bryozoans, hydrozoans and mainly the large brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum (Ascophyllum-community). At the semi-exposed, but not at the exposed location the communities changed with the intertidal position. A relationship between wave exposure and the occurrence of specific communities was shown for the sheltered location; in contrast, communities of the semi-exposed and the exposed location appear to be little influenced by wave exposure directly. The community concept and the potential causes of distribution patterns of the defined communities are discussed and suggestions for a future monitoring are given. Variations in the communities at different spatial scales speak in favour of a multiple scale sampling design to monitor changes in the intertidal communities at Helgoland. The growth rate of five species of intertidal Fucales (Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dec. et Thur., Fucus spiralis L., Fucus vesiculosus L., Fucus serratus L., Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis) was measured at temperatures from 2.5 to 35 °C. An increase in temperature immediately causes a high growth rate, and during the first hour it increases linearly with temperature; at 35 °C it is 20 times the control at 7 °C. This acceleration of growth is based mainly on stored photosynthate. After the first few hours the growth rate decreases rapidly, particularly at the highest temperatures. After 2–3 weeks a temperature optimum below 17.5 °C is indicated. High temperatures, 30–35 °C, were lethal to all species, with a survival time corresponding to their vertical zonation in the natural habitat.  相似文献

Sequences from the two ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) were compared among five species of Fucus. Based on the present taxon sampling, parsimony analysis showed that Fucus serratus is the sister-group of the remaining Fucus species when Ascophyllum nodosum was used as an outgroup. The topology of the tree was (Fucus serratus (F. lutarius (F. vesiculosus (F. spiralis+F. ceranoides)))). The extremely low variation observed suggests a very recent radiation of the genus which supports the view widely accepted that the Fucales are among the most evolutionarily advanced of the brown algae. We further note that sequence differences between Fucus and Ascophyllum were 28%: this does not rule out the utility of ITS sequences within the Fucaceae. The very low number of informative positions allows to demonstrate empirically that distance matrix methods group on the basis of symplesiomorphies. The, effects of ice on Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis within the Great Bay Estuary System of New Hampshire-Maine, U.S.A. were assessed during the winter of 1980–81. Approximately 50% of the plants late fall standing crop, or an estimated 136 tonnes dry weight, was removed by ice-rafting. Pieces of Ascophyllum removed averaged 22 cm in length, 15 g in fresh weight and generally represented 2–3 years of growth. Although the winter of 1980–81 wax somewhat extreme, a similar pruning process probably occurs each year contributing to the characteristic bushy habit of attached inner estuarine plants. Ascophyllum fragments rafted in ice and deposited into salt marshes are suggested as a major source of the, ecad scorpioides (Hornemann) Hauck.  相似文献

Year-round observations on the condition of intertidal seaweeds growing in situ on the shore, show that the upper limits of the zones characterized by Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Done et Thur., Fucus spiralis L. and Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. were periodically pruned back by environmental conditions. The uppermost plants of each species showed clear signs of tissue damage 21 to 28 days after a time when drying conditions coincided with neap tides which exposed the plant to aerial conditions for long periods. High air temperatures aggravated the damage, but neither frost nor prolonged rain had any obvious adverse effects. On spring tides the plants were wetted every day and no damage resulted regardless of the weather. These species clearly all reach up to their physiological limits on the shore investigated, but presumably Fucus vesiculosus L. and F. serratus L. do not, for they were never observed to show signs of tissue damage attributable to exposure to air. Transplant experiments did, however, prove that F. serratus cannot survive in the F. spiralis zone and nor can F. spiralis persist in the Pelvetia canaliculata zone.Laboratory experiments also demonstrated that the ability to tolerate desiccation and then to resume photosynthesis and growth when re-submerged was greatest in P. canaliculata, the species found highest on the shore, and was progressively less in species inhabiting successively lower levels.  相似文献

Intertidal macroalgae Fucus and Laminaria experience seasonally fluctuating inorganic N supply. This study examined the effects of long‐term N deprivation, recovery following N resupply, and effects of elevated ammonium and nitrate exposure on N acquisition in intertidal algae using manipulations of N supply in tank culture. Over 15 weeks of N deprivation, internal N and nitrate reductase activity (NRA) declined, but maximum quantum yield of PSII was unaffected in Fucus serratus and Fucus vesiculosus. Low NRA was maintained despite no external nitrate availability and depletion of internal pools, suggesting a constitutive NRA, insensitive to N supply. Nitrate resupplied to N‐starved thalli was rapidly taken up and internal nitrate pools and NRA increased. Exposure to elevated (50 μM) nitrate over 4 days stimulated nitrate uptake and NRA in Laminaria digitata and F. serratus. Exposure to elevated ammonium suppressed NRA in L. digitata but not in F. serratus. This novel insensitivity of NRA to ammonium in Fucus contrasts with regulation of NRA in other algae and higher plants. Ammonium suppression of NRA in L. digitata was not via inhibition of nitrate uptake and was independent of nitrate availability. L. digitata showed a higher capacity for internal nitrate storage when exposed to elevated ambient nitrate, but NRA was lower than in Fucus. All species maintained nitrate assimilation capacity in excess of nitrate uptake capacity. N uptake and storage strategies of these intertidal macroalgae are adaptive to life in fluctuating N supply, and distinct regulation of N metabolism in Fucus vs Laminaria may relate to position in the intertidal zone.  相似文献

Chl fluorescence during and immediately after low tide under four meteorological conditions was measured in embryos of three fucoid algae [Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol., Fucus vesiculosus L., and Fucus distichus subsp. edentatus Bach. (Pyl.) H. T. Powell] vertically distributed in the intertidal zone in Québec, Canada. Artificial substrata with attached embryos of each species were outplanted into each zone and into two different microhabitats: under and outside an adult canopy. Several fluorescence measurements were made using pulse‐amplitude‐modulated (PAM) fluorometry, from which maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield (φPSII), relative electron transport rate (rETR), and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) were calculated. Fv/Fm, φPSII, and rETR decreased, and NPQ increased during low tide, most rapidly under the most desiccating meteorological conditions (i.e., sunny‐windy weather). The species occurring lowest in the vertical distribution, F. distichus subsp. edentatus, was the most affected, and the two highest species, A. nodosum and F. vesiculosus, only rarely differed. Tidal height itself also influenced the decline in fluorescence parameters, with more gradual declines in lower zones, except under the least desiccating conditions (i.e., cloudy‐calm weather). Recovery upon reimmersion was rapid in all circumstances. Under a canopy, decreases in maximum and effective quantum yields were more gradual than in exposed locations. Although the young stages of these species were affected by physical conditions experienced during low tide and their exact response depended on the precise meteorological conditions, differences in responses among species were surprisingly small. The abilities of young stages to withstand aerial conditions were, however, consistent with the zonation patterns of adults, and conditions under an adult canopy offered some protection.  相似文献

Morphological, demographic and physiological characteristics of Rhode Island intertidal and subtidal populations of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis were compared in order to examine factors influencing vertical distribution. The two populations had distinctive morphologies: subtidal plants were narrower (more terete) and highly branched compared with intertidal plants. The subtidal population showed signs of necrosis and breakage, which was reflected in significantly shorter mean plant size. High survivorship and low recruitment of both population resulted in relatively constant densities, averaging 91 and 50 plants per m2 in the intertidal and subtidal habitats, respectively. Intertidal plants had higher mean annual growth rates (25 cm.yr?1) than subtidal plants (2 cm.yr?1). In general, intertidal plants had higher photosynthetic capacity and nutrient (NO3?) uptake rates than the subtidal population but maintained lower light-harvesting pigment and tissue nitrogen concentrations. Although Ascophyllum nodosum is capable of survival and growth in subtidal as well as intertidal areas, results of this study suggest that different selective pressures affect persistence in each habitat. The scarcity of plants in the subtidal environment may be due to the lack of a critical balance between algal production, allocation of photosynthate, and the negative effects of grazers or competitors.  相似文献

The microorganisms on the surface of the brown algaAscophyllum nodosum, collected from an intertidal area in Nahant, Massachusetts, were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Differences in the microbial populations on the holdfast, internodal regions of the stipe, and the apical tips were apparent. The populations ranged from a lawn of end-attached bacteria above the holdfast to microcolonies of yeast cells near the apical tips. The greatest diversity of microorganisms was noted in the internodal region representing the fourth year of growth where a dense lawn of end-attached bacteria was overlaid by filamentous bacteria, pennate diatoms, and filamentous blue-green algae. A simple procedure was developed to estimate the number of bacteria on the surface of the seaweed using the scanning electron microscope. The observed distribution of epiphytes may be explained in terms of the age of the algal surface, differences in light intensity, and the differential secretion of tannin by various parts ofAscophyllum.  相似文献

Biological interactions affecting densities of settling and newly-settled Semibalanus balanoides (L.) have been investigated by manipulative field experiments on the Isle of Man.The effects of sweeping by fucoid clumps of different species and Patella browsing have been compared on moderately-exposed shores. Patella allowed barnacle settlement by preventing growth of competing green algae, but reduced post-settlement densities. Small clumps of Fucus spiralis L., F. vesiculosus L, and F. serratus L. all reduced settlement considerably more so than limpets. F. serratus had the greatest sweeping effect.Interactions between macroalgae and Semibalanus balanoides have been investigated at all levels on sheltered shores and low down on more exposed shores. In the Fucus spiralis and F. vesiculosus zones, post-settlement numbers were higher than in adjacent areas where the canopy was removed. Barnacles did not settle readily in the Ascophyllum zone in either experimental or control areas. Settlement occurred in the upper part of the Fucus serratus zone in experimental areas where the canopy was removed but not in control areas. No settlement occurred in either treatment or control areas lower in the F. serratus zone. At all levels on the shore fucoid canopies seemed to reduce cyprid settlement, but the effect was greatest amongst F. serratus where there was total prevention. High on the shore the effect of enhanced post-settlement survival under the canopy outweighs reduction of cyprid settlement thus there are greater numbers in the controls. Competition with red algal turfs was shown to set the lower limit of the barnacle zone on a vertical pier face.  相似文献

In northwest Europe, sheltered rocky shores are dominated by fucoid canopy algae and barnacles are rare, although the latter are extremely abundant on exposed shores. The supply of the intertidal barnacle Semibalanus balanoides (L.) to sheltered, fucoid dominated rocky shores was investigated to determine the importance of larval supply in limiting the abundance of adults in shelter. Larval supply was measured at two spatial scales, at the scale of shore (100s of metres), by comparing larval concentrations at exposed and sheltered sites, and at a smaller spatial scale (m), by examining the role of fucoid canopies in limiting supply to the substratum. Replicate plankton trawls were carried out above the intertidal zone at high water at two sheltered sites and nearby exposed headlands. The concentration of S. balanoides cyprid larvae was significantly higher at the sheltered sites on two out of three sampling occasions with up to 14 times greater larvae on one occasion than the nearby exposed site. The effect of the macroalgal canopy on supply to the substratum was assessed in two ways: directly, by pumping water from the substratum in areas with and without Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis, and indirectly by measuring cyprid settlement in a canopy-manipulation experiment. Pumped plankton samples from mid tide level showed that the A. nodosum canopy did not form a barrier to larval supply and may have had a positive effect on larval concentrations at the substratum. Cyprid settlement was assessed in the mid shore A. nodosum and low shore Fucus serratus L. zones to areas with canopy algae (but protected from the sweeping effects of macroalgal fronds) and without canopy. Settlement over three consecutive 24-h periods showed a consistent pattern; settlement was consistently lower beneath the F. serratus canopy than in cleared areas, suggesting that this algal species forms a barrier, limiting supply of cyprid larvae to the substratum.  相似文献

The effects of small-scale disturbances (80×30-cm plots) of canopy and grazers on intertidal assemblages were investigated in this 4-year experiment on sheltered rocky shores on the Swedish west coast. Canopy disturbances due to ice scouring were mimicked by removal of adult plants of the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Joli. Density of the main epilithic grazing gastropods, Littorina spp., was lowered by exclosure and handpicking. Based on earlier experiments in other areas, the general hypothesis was that canopy removal and grazer exclosure, alone or in combination, should increase the recruitment of A. nodosum or other fucoid juveniles, and change the structure of the understorey assemblage. There was an effect of canopy removal on the development of this assemblage, lasting for more than 31 months. Both increased and decreased abundances of species were found as short-term effects, but there was also a longer-term effect with increased abundance. Grazer exclosure was only effective in combination with canopy removal, causing a short-term increase in ephemeral green algae. Short-term effects of canopy removal were also the increase in recruitment of Semibalanus balanoides (Linnaeus) and the decrease of the red alga Hildenbrandia rubra (Sommerfelt) Meneghini. Fast recruitment and growth of fucoid species (Fucus serratus L. and F. vesiculosus L.) restored the canopy and conditions of the understorey within 18 months. Thus, the canopy removal changed the physical conditions for the understorey, making it possible for other species to coexist in this community. Surprisingly, no effect of canopy removal or grazer exclusion was found on the recruitment of juvenile A. nodosum, neither by canopy removal nor grazer exclosure. The lack of such effects might be due to the early mortality caused by other grazers (small, mobile crustaceans), or to the low density of periwinkles on these shores. However, despite the patchy and generally low recruitment of A. nodosum juveniles, observations suggested that the cover of A. nodosum in manipulated patches would return to initial levels, either by recruitment or regrowth of small holdfasts and from growth of edge plants.  相似文献

The settlement patterns of spores of Polysiphonia lanosa (L.) Tandy on Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. were studied using a flow tank. Settlement sites were defined as ‘sheltered’ or ‘exposed.’ Surface area calculations revealed non-random settlement on A. nodosum, with higher than expected spore frequencies on the thallus and lateral pits and lower than expected frequencies on the vesicles. Settlement of F. vesiculosus was random and significantly lower than on A. nodosum. On the shore, survival of sporelings from September (post-sporulation) to May (pre-sporulation) was highly non-random on both basiphytes. On A. nodosum, lateral pits ('sheltered') showed the highest survival frequency. Here the proportion of surviving sporelings increased over the study period, whereas the proportion on open thallus area ('exposed') decreased. On F. vesiculosus also preferential survival occurred on ‘sheltered’ sites such as vesicle/thallus interfaces and wounds. Between September and May, all P. lanosa sporelings were lost from ‘exposed’ areas (thallus surface and vesicles). Overall, frequencies of surviving sporelings were much greater on A. nodosum than on F. vesiculosus. These results are discussed with reference to basiphyte morphology, epiphyte removal mechanisms and the survival stratagy of P. lanosa.  相似文献

Summary 1. Littoral algal vegetation was studied at three localities in the inner Oslofjord; one in the Drøbak area, and two in the more polluted inner basin.2. Regrowth and succession on cleared strips were followed for 16 months.3. The phaeophyceanAscophyllum nodosum was a common species in the inner part of the fjord at the turn of the century, but has disappeared with increase in pollution.4. Well-grown specimens ofAscophyllum nodosum were transplanted from the Drøbak area to the inner basin. No essential differences in vegetative growth and maturation of generative structures were observed.5. Growth and development ofFucus distichus ssp.edentatus were followed from the state of germlings to fertile plants.6. Regrowth proceeded more slowly in the Drøbak locality than in the localities in the inner basin, where a dense carpet ofEnteromorpha spp. etc. was formed.7. It is assumed that the increased competition for substrate and the shading effect of theEnteromorpha carpet reduces the chances ofAscophyllum nodosum germlings of becoming established in the inner basin.

Interactions have been studied between juvenile plants of green, brown, and red marine algae and 31 diatom clones isolated from a variety of marine eulittoral habitats. The interactions seemed to be of an individual nature for both juvenile plants and diatoms. Germlings of Ulva lactuca L. mostly showed enhanced growth, often with significant increases in population sizes of the accompanying diatoms. Fucus spiralis L. germlings were mainly unaffected by growth in the presence of the diatom clones, but growth of the diatoms was often stimulated. Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. germlings were little affected, whilst the accompanying diatoms were less noticeably affected than with Fucus spiralis. Germlings of F. vesiculosus L. often showed growth inhibitions in the presence of diatoms, with many diatom populations showing enhanced growth. Similarly, the discoid encrusting sporelings of Chondrus crispus Stackh. showed growth inhibitions where there were measurable interactions, although the accompanying diatoms usually failed to show growth stimulations. The discoid sporelings of Gigartina stellata (Stackh. in With.) Batt. showed high mortalities, usually with marked increases in population sizes of accompanying diatoms.  相似文献
