Ovaries from Lymantria dispar females were transplanted into an environment lacking the vitellogenin ligand; i.e., the male milieu. Transmission electron micrographs comparing the terminal oocytes of male-grown ovaries and normal ovaries showed that yolk sphere diameters were reduced in the male-grown oocytes. However, there were larger numbers of these small yolk spheres per unit area of cytoplasm, indicating that the coalescence of endosomes into yolk spheres is reduced in the absence of vitellogenin. Although there are larger numbers of yolk spheres in male-grown oocytes, the smaller diameter of yolk spheres resulted in less area being taken up by yolk spheres per unit area of cytoplasm in male-grown oocytes, yielding lowered yolk production. This lowered yolk production is a result at least in part of the lowered number of coated vesicles per unit area of submembrane space and in part of the reduced interfollicular spaces seen in male-grown ovaries.  相似文献

A variety of cytochemical techniques were used to demonstrate how crustacean lipovitellin accumulates within the egg. It was found that a protein serologically identical to the lipovitellin of yolk spheres was present in the hemolymph of vitellogenic crustaceans, but was absent from the hemolymph of males and immature females.In the three crustacean species studied (Uca pugilator, Cambarus clarkii, and Libinia emarginata), pinocytosis of fluorescein-conjugated lipovitellin and trypan blue occurred only during those periods when oocytes were accumulating yolk.It may be concluded from the present studies that yolk spheres develop in crustacean eggs primarily through micropinocytotic uptake of lipovitellin from the hemolymph, although other oocyte proteins appear to be made in the oocyte.  相似文献

Summary In Ophryotrocha labronica LaGreca & Bacci mature yolk granules are found only in the ovocyte. Other typical yolk elements are lipid droplets, small vesicular bodies, multivesicular bodies and dense bodies. The two last-mentioned also appear in the accompanying nurse cell and from there obviously pass over unchanged into the ovocyte through a specific intercellular bridge, the fusome.The mature yolk granules are considered as aggregates of mitochondrial, endoplasmic and Golgi material, to which also is added pinocytotically incorporated external material. Mitochondria apparently play a fundamental role in the process, as the multivesicular bodies, most likely the direct precursors to the yolk granules, in all probability represent transformed mitochondria.Labelling with 3H-thymidine during vitellogenesis reveals presence of DNA in the yolk granules. From the labelling pattern, which shows DNA-synthesis both in the ovocyte and the nurse cell nucleus, it is concluded that the labelled material present in the cytoplasm of both cells — most of it in yolk granules and dense bodies — is of nuclear origin. Seasonality of burden and prevalence of phototrophic (microalgal) epibionts Characidiopsis ellipsoidea, Colacium vesiculosum and Colacium sp. on dominating crustacean zooplankton (Daphnia longispina, Cyclops vicinus and Mesocyclops leuckarti) were studied in a small reservoir Bugach with cyanobacterial bloom. The correlations between the seasonal dynamics of prevalence and the dynamics of others biotic and abiotic factors were calculated. The conclusions were as follows. The substrate species, that determined the development of the epibionts on the three studied crustacean zooplankton, was Daphnia longispina (Cladocera). Despite intensive epibiotic infestation of crustacean zooplankton, epibionts did not appear to have caused non-consumptive mortality of the crustacean zooplankton. But they could have contributed to the Daphnia summer decline by increasing mortality due to its consumption by planktivorous fishes. The phototropic epibionts may successfully coexist with cyanobacterial bloom. The possible role of the epibionts in changing nutrient fluxes in pelagic food web is discussed.  相似文献

Field and experimental studies were conducted to evaluate the combined impacts of cyanobacterial blooms and small algae on seasonal and long-term changes in the abundance and community structure of crustacean zooplankton in a large, eutrophic, Chinese lake, Lake Chaohu. Seasonal changes of the crustacean zooplankton from 22 sampling stations were investigated during September 2002 and August 2003, and 23 species belonging to 20 genera were recorded. Daphnia spp. dominated in spring but disappeared in mid-summer, while Bosmina coregoni and Ceriodaphnia cornuta dominated in summer and autumn. Both maximum cladoceran density (310 ind. l−1) and biomass (5.2 mg l−1) appeared in autumn. Limnoithona sinensis, Sinocalanus dorrii and Schmackeria inopinus were the main species of copepods. Microcystis spp. were the dominant phytoplankton species and formed dense blooms in the warm seasons. In the laboratory, inhibitory effects of small colonial Microcystis on growth and reproduction of Daphnia carinata were more remarkable than those of large ones, and population size of D. carinata was negatively correlated with density of fresh large colonial Microcystis within a density range of 0–100 mg l−1 (r = −0.82, P< 0.05). Both field and experimental results suggested that seasonal and long-term changes in the community structure of crustacean zooplankton in the lake were shaped by cyanobacterial blooms and biomass of the small algae, respectively, i.e., colonial and filamentous cyanobacteria contributed to the summer replacement of dominant crustacean zooplankton from large Daphnia spp. to small B. coregoni and C. cornuta, while increased small algae might be responsible for the increased abundance of crustacean zooplankton during the past decades.  相似文献

The micropterygid moth Neomicropteryx nipponensis belongs to the most primitive suborder Zeugloptera of the Lepidoptera. During embryogenesis the small circular germ disk formed on the ventral egg surface invaginates deeply into the yolk. It finally separates from the egg periphery or rudimentary serosa, and becomes a sac-shaped germ rudiment. Its anterior part later develops into the germ band, while its posterior part is the future amnion. Just before revolution of the embryo, the embryo assumes a completely superficial position beneath the yolk. Neither amnion nor serosa rupture during revolution; by completion of dorsal closure they have been incorporated into the yolk to form the secondary dorsal organ. The formation of the germ rudiment and embryonic membranes in N. nipponensis resembles those of swift moths, Endoclyta (suborder Monotrysia) and of the caddisflies, Stenopsyche (Trichoptera), but differs from those of ditrysian Lepidoptera. The secondary dorsal organ has never been found in any other lepidopteran embryos; however, it is formed in N. nipponensis and in the Trichoptera. The results of the present study strongly support the general phylogenetic views that the Zeugloptera have a close affinity to the Trichoptera.  相似文献

Summary The yolk proteins of Drosophila melanogaster comprise a family of three related yolk polypeptides each encoded by a single-copy gene. We show by genetic crosses that each gene makes an equivalent contribution to the fecundity and fertility of the female and they do not individually provide unique functions to the embryo. We show that the number of eggs laid by a female depends upon the number of genes encoding yolk polypeptides present in the genome and furthermore that the probability of an egg hatching into an adult also critically depends upon the number of yolk protein genes present in the mother. This suggests that the three yolk protein-encoding genes in Drosophila melanogaster may have arisen by duplication, then been maintained for quantitative reasons because they increased egg production and fertility, rather than each protein evolving a different function as is the case with most small gene families, such as tubulins and collagen genes.  相似文献

The principal carotenoids present during the 16‐day embryonic development period and in the first post‐embryonic stage (zoea I) were identified and quantified in the diadromous, neotropical, freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium olfersii, employing differential extraction, absorption spectra analysis and thin layer chromatography. The characteristic crustacean pigments α‐ and β‐carotene and astaxanthin, and a mixture of four unidentified yellow pigments were found. Total carotenoids increase significantly at the mid‐point of embryogenesis (day 8), declining to a minimum in the recently hatched first zoea. This decrease appears to reflect the establishment of carotenoid catabolism, or of carotenoid use in protein and membrane formation and stabilization towards the end of embryogenesis, as well as the depletion of yolk protein reserves by the non‐feeding first zoea.  相似文献

Non‐avian reptiles commonly are assumed to be like birds in their overall patterns of development. However, colubrid corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus ) have mechanisms of yolk cellularization and processing that are entirely different from the avian pattern. In birds, a vascular “yolk sac” surrounds and digests the liquid yolk. In contrast, in corn snakes, the yolk material is converted into vascularized cords of yolk‐filled cells. In this study, we used stereomicroscopy, histology, and scanning electron microscopy to analyze this unusual developmental pattern in corn snakes. Our observations reveal that the yolk sac cavity is invaded by endodermal cells that proliferate, absorb yolk spheres, and form aggregates of interconnected cells within the liquid yolk mass. As development proceeds, small blood vessels arise from the yolk sac omphalopleure, penetrate into the yolk mass, and become tightly encased in the endodermal cells. The entire vitellus ultimately becomes converted into a mass of vascularized, “spaghetti‐like” strands of yolk‐laden cells. The resulting arrangement allows yolk to be digested intracellularly and yolk products to be transported to the developing embryo. Indirect evidence for this pattern in other species raises the possibility that it is ancestral for squamates and quite possibly Reptilia in general.  相似文献

The morphological and biological features of Bythotrephes—a relatively rare crustacean in Lake Pleshcheevo—have been identified on the basis of vast material (several hundreds of individuals) collected in August 2010. The individuals were distinguished by a minimal body size, short caudal appendix, absence of a loop, and very small caudal claws and were identified as Bythotrephes brevimanus Lilljeborg, 1901. The morphology of the crustacean corresponds to the high water mineralization in the lake and the relative stability of the environment. Some peculiarities of molt and growth of the crustacean were distinguished. A chitinous integument of the caudal appendix formed during embryogenesis has a different structure than chitin formed during further molts. In August, the population of B. brevimanus in different areas of the lake was stable and consisted only of juveniles and parthenogenetic females (80%) (4–6 eggs). The largest number of crustaceans (150 ind./m3) was recorded in the periphery of the depression above depths of 6–7 m; 80 ind./m3 were recorded above depths of 11–12 m; and, above the depression, there were less than 30 ind./m3. The small density of crustaceans in the pelagial depends on the intensive grazing of this food object selected by fish in especially transparent water (color 15–20 and transparency 300–600 cm).  相似文献

Development of the yolk sac of squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes) differs from other amniote lineages in the pattern of growth of extraembryonic mesoderm, which produces a cavity, the yolk cleft, within the yolk. The structure of the yolk cleft and the accompanying isolated yolk mass influence development of the allantois and chorioallantoic membrane. The yolk cleft of viviparous species of the Eugongylus group of scincid lizards is the foundation for an elaborate yolk sac placenta; development of the yolk cleft of oviparous species has not been studied. We used light microscopy to describe the yolk sac and chorioallantoic membrane in a developmental series of an oviparous member of this species group, Oligosoma lichenigerum. Topology of the extraembryonic membranes of late stage embryos differs from viviparous species as a result of differences in development of the yolk sac. The chorioallantoic membrane encircles the egg of O. lichenigerum but is confined to the embryonic hemisphere of the egg in viviparous species. Early development of the yolk cleft is similar for both modes of parity, but in contrast to viviparous species, the yolk cleft of O. lichenigerum is transformed into a tube‐like structure, which fills with cells. The yolk cleft originates as extraembryonic mesoderm is diverted from the periphery of the egg into the yolk sac cavity. As a result, a bilaminar omphalopleure persists over the abembryonic surface of the yolk. The bilaminar omphalopleure is ultimately displaced by intrusion of allantoic mesoderm between ectodermal and endodermal layers. The resulting chorioallantoic membrane has a similar structure but different developmental history to the chorioallantoic membrane of the embryonic hemisphere of the egg. J. The insulin superfamily comprises a group of peptides with diverse physiological functions and is conserved across the animal kingdom. Insulin-like peptides (ILPs) of crustaceans are classified into four major types: insulin, relaxin, gonadulin, and androgenic gland hormone (AGH)/insulin-like androgenic gland factor (IAG). Of these, the physiological functions of AGH/IAG have been clarified to be the regulation of male sex differentiation, but those of the other types have not been uncovered. In this study, we chemically synthesized Maj-ILP1, an ILP identified in the ovary of the kuruma prawn Marsupenaeus japonicus, using a combination of solid-phase peptide synthesis and regioselective disulfide bond formation reactions. As the circular dichroism spectral pattern of synthetic Maj-ILP1 is typical of other ILPs reported thus far, the synthetic peptide likely possessed the proper conformation. Functional analysis using ex vivo tissue incubation revealed that Maj-ILP1 significantly increased the expression of the yolk protein genes Maj-Vg1 and Maj-Vg2 in the hepatopancreas and Maj-Vg1 in the ovary of adolescent prawns. This is the first report on the synthesis of a crustacean ILP other than IAGs and also shows the positive relationship between the reproductive process and female-dominant ILP.  相似文献

In Lake G»rdsjön (Southwest Sweden), liming as an experimental improvement of living conditions for pelagic algae, resulted in a significant increase of algal biomass and a reduction of mean cell size. The algal development was beneficial for small sized filter feeding zooplankton, particularly rotifers, which showed a significant increase. The increase in abundance of small sized zooplankton created better food conditions for the smaller instars, and thus a much better overall survival of Chaoborus larvae. The resulting, 6–7 times larger population of Chaoborus larvae significantly changed the structure of the crustacean zooplankton community. Bosmina coregoni, the fastest swimmer of the crustacean species suffered most and was strongly reduced by the increased predation from Chaoborus. The share of cladocerans decreased, while copepods increased in importance.  相似文献

Ocean acidification is an important consequence of rising levels of atmospheric CO2. The chemistry of acidification is, however, general and may disturb pH in terrestrial systems. The present study examines the effects of rising CO2 on insect eggs, which may be vulnerable to acidification because they are small, have (at least initially) poorly developed physiological systems, and support important developmental events. Newly‐laid eggs of the moth Manduca sexta are exposed to levels of CO2 between 0 and 2200 p.p.m., in air, and effects on yolk pH, total developmental time, and survival are measured. Altered CO2 has no effect, over several hours, on the pH of egg yolk, suggesting that yolk fluids are well buffered. By contrast, there is a large developmental change in yolk pH. Eggs exposed to eight different levels of CO2 for the duration of development show a small but significant parabolic response in development time. Eggs develop fastest at intermediate levels of CO2, between 400 and 1200 p.p.m., and slower at 0, 1600 and 2000 p.p.m. These results suggest that future rises in CO2 may not have strong direct effects on insect development.  相似文献

The formation of protein-carbohydrate yolk in the statoblast of a fresh-water bryozoan, Pectinatella gelatinosa, was studied by electron microscopy. Two types (I and II) of yolk cells were distinguished. The type I yolk cells are mononucleate and comprise a large majority of the yolk cells. The type II yolk cells are small in number; they become multinucleate by fusion of cells at an early stage of vitellogenesis. In both types of yolk cells, electron-dense granules (dense bodies) are formed in Golgi or condensing vacuoles, which are then called yolk granules. For the formation of yolk granules, the following processes are considered: 1. Yolk protein is synthesized in the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum (RER) of the yolk cells. 2. The synthesized protein condenses in the cisternal space of the RER and is packaged into small oval swellings, which are then released from the RER as small vesicles (Golgi vesicles, 300-600 A in diameter). 3. The small vesicles fuse with one another to form condensing vacuoles, or with pre-existing growing yolk granules. 4. In the matrix of the condensing vacuoles or growing yolk granules, electron-dense fibers are fabricated and then arranged in a paracrystalline pattern to form the dense body. 5. After the dense body reaches its full size, excess membrane is removed and eventually the yolk granules come to mature. Toward the end of vitellogenesis of the yolk cells, the cytoplasmic organelles are ingested by autophagosomes derived from multivesicular bodies and disappear.  相似文献

Summary This study demonstrates that endocytosis in the oocyte of Drosophila melanogaster is reversibly blocked at the stage of pit formation by the temperature-sensitive, single-gene mutant, shibire ts1. Uptake of horseradish peroxidase conjugated with wheat-germ agglutinin was observed to be normal in mutant oocytes at 19°C, but was blocked at 29°C. After 10 min at 29°C, there was a build-up of coated pits along invaginations of the plasma membrane. Also, the endosomal compartment consisting of tubules, bulbs, and small yolk spheres, disappeared. Lowering the temperature to 19°C after 10 min at 29°C released a synchronized wave of endocytosis into a cytoplasm cleared of uptake-related organelles. By observing this synchronized wave after exposure to 19°C for varying durations, we determined that endocytosis proceeds as follows: coated pits/vesiclestubulessmall yolk spheresmature yolk spheres. 2017年3月到2018年2月研究了临涣湖浮游甲壳动物群落结构的季节变化。临涣湖共记录浮游甲壳动物13种,其中枝角类8属8种,桡足类5属5种。短尾秀体溞(Diaphanosoma brachyurum)、广布中剑水蚤(Mesocyclops leuckarti)和象鼻溞(Bosmina sp.)等小型富营养种类是温暖季节的优势种,而近邻剑水蚤(Cyclops vicinus)是冬季的优势种。盔形溞(Daphnia galeata)等大型种类仅在少数月份中被观察到。临涣湖浮游甲壳动物的年平均密度和生物量分别为28.3个/L和0.33 mg/L。营养状态指数(TSIM)的年平均值为62.6。浮游甲壳动物的Shannon指数、Pielou指数和Simpson指数的年平均值分别为0.86、0.74和0.49,且3种多样性指数均具有显著的季节差异。营养盐水平、营养状态指数和物种多样性指数均表明,临涣湖水体处于富营养化状态。冗余分析结果表明,水温、总磷浓度和叶绿素a浓度是影响临涣湖浮游甲壳动物群落结构变化的上行效应因子。鲢、鳙鱼的捕食压力是临涣湖浮游甲壳动物群落结构小型化的下...  相似文献

Summary

The yolk proteins of six pyralid moths were analyzed and compared with the yolk proteins of Plodia interpunctella (Hübner). When cross-reacted in an Ouchterlony double immunodiffusion with antiserum raised to either total yolk proteins or purified vitellin from P. tnterpunctella, the yolk proteins of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller), Cadra cautella (Walker), C. figulilella (Gregson), and Ephestia elutella (Hübner), closely related members of the subfamily Phycitinae, showed strong precipitation lines that consisted of four major yolk polypeptides (YPs). The yolk proteins from Amyelois transitella (Walker) were only weakly reactive, whereas yolk proteins from Galleria mel-lonella (L.) were not precipitated by either antiserum. Abdominal body walls (containing primarily fat body) from late pharate adult females were incubated in vitro and they secreted two major polypeptides that had molecular masses similar to the vitellogenins (YP1 and YP3) from P. interpunctella. In addition, ovarioles from late pharate adult females were incubated in vitro, and they secreted two major polypeptides that had molecular masses similar to YP2 and YP4 from P. interpunctella. When late pharate adult females were injected with 35S-Met, the hemolymph of all species contained vitellogins that were secreted by their respective body walls in vitro. Ovarioles from injected females contained many labeled polypeptides, but there were four major bands that corresponded consistently to the vitellogenins secreted from the fat body and the two major polypeptides secreted from the ovarioles. These data show that the production of the major YPs in these closely related pyralid species is very similar, and that there is considerable conservation of immunological characters of yolk proteins in the subfamily Phycitinae.  相似文献
