Two isolates of cocksfoot mild mosaic virus obtained from cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) in Scotland differed in symptomatology, and apparently in host range, from isolates obtained in Germany and Wales. They were serologically more closely related to a Dutch isolate from cocksfoot, and to a Scottish isolate from timothy (Phleum pratense), than was the German isolate from cocksfoot. The Scottish isolate from timothy was somewhat more virulent than, but serologically closely related to a Welsh isolate from timothy. Particles of Scottish isolates from cocksfoot and timothy were best preserved for electron microscopy by fixation with osmium tetroxide. In 1.0 m KCl or 0.01 m ethylene diamine tetraacetate they were stable at pH 5.2–5.3 but unstable above pH 7; they were disrupted by 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulphate. The particles contained major and minor RNA components of mol. wt c. 1.5. 106(RNA-1) and 0.5. 106(RNA-2) respectively, together with polydisperse RNA of intermediate mol. wt and protein of mol. wt c. 27 000. In CsCl gradients, major and minor nucleoprotein components of density 1.39 and 1.38 g/ml respectively were distinguished. The less dense particles contained a larger proportion of intermediate-sized RNA molecules and of RNA- 2 , and a smaller proportion of RNA- 1 , than did the denser particles. Particles seem to contain either RNA-1 or various combinations of smaller RNA molecules. Despite the differences in antigenic constitution, symptomatology and particle stability between virus isolates obtained from cocksfoot and timothy in different countries, these isolates seem sufficiently similar to be considered one virus.  相似文献

The absorption and distribution of sodium were examined in threegrasses grown in flowing solution culture with different suppliesof potassium. There were marked differences between the speciesin the rate of absorption by their roots, timothy absorbingat a much slower rate than either ryegrass or cocksfoot. Inall species, the rate of Na absorption was greatest when therewas a maintained supply of K and/or when the K contents of theplants were high. Transport of Na from roots to shoots of timothywas restricted; it was less restricted in the other speciesand large proportions of the Na moved from roots to shoots whenK was not supplied to the plants. Sodium transported from theroots accumulated in old leaves and not in the younger leaves.When K was no longer supplied, the growth of ryegrass was maintainedin the plants previously grown with Na plus K; Na supplied insteadof K, however, did not maintain growth. Cocksfoot grown withNa grew less well than when grown without Na when plants wereno longer supplied with K; the growth of timothy was unaffectedby Na. Surveys of forage crop diseases in the Republic of Ireland have been conducted annually since 1965. Over fifty fungal diseases have been noted, about half of which are of likely economic importance. Disease control investigations were carried out on the more prevalent diseases, such as crown rust and Ophiobolus patch of ryegrass, leaf fleck of cocksfoot and powdery mildew of tall fescue. Some pathogens previously unrecorded in the British Isles were found. These included Spermospora lolii and Lolium mottle virus on ryegrass, and Mastigosporium kitzebergense on timothy.  相似文献

Inter-specific relationships between mean seed weight, coleoptile + mesocotyl (sub-coleoptile internode) length and width, shoot strength and emergence from different sowing depths were examined for timothy (Phleum pratense L., mean seed weight 0.33-0.48 mg depending on seed line), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L., 0.65-0.78 mg), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L., 1.71-2.19 mg), tall fescue (Festuca arundinucea Schreb., 1.73–2.60 mg), annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam., 5.10-5.20 mg) and prairie grass (Bromus willdenowü Kunth., 10.5–12.2 mg). Across species at 10,30 and 60 mm sowing depths in the field and 10, 15 and 30 mm sowing depths under controlled environment conditions, there was a significant (P < 0.05) positive correlation between emergence % and mean seed weight. Across species at 10–30 mm sowing depth under controlled environment conditions, emergence % was not significantly correlated with coleoptile + mesocotyl length but there were significant positive correlations between emergence % and coleoptile and mesocotyl width: shoot strength increased with increased coleoptile width across species. For seed lines of timothy of different mean seed weight (0.21-0.81 mg), emergence %, coleoptile + mesocotyl length and coleoptile and mesocotyl width increased with increased seed weight at 10 and 15 mm sowing depth. Shoot strength increased with increased coleoptile width for timothy. For emerged and non-emerged cocksfoot and timothy seedlings regardless of seed weight, mean coleoptile + mesocotyl length was > 10 mm at 10 mm sowing depth. It is concluded that at 10–30 mm sowing depth, increased emergence % with increased seed weight across species is not due to increased coleoptile + mesocotyl length. It is proposed that increased emergence % with increased seed weight across species at 10–30 mm sowing depths and across seed lines of timothy at 10 mm sowing depth is primarily due to increased coleoptile and mesocotyl width resulting in increased shoot strength and hence an increased ability to penetrate the substrate.  相似文献

A Scottish isolate of cocksfoot streak virus (CSV-S) was found to have flexuous filamentous particles which, in sap of infected cocksfoot plants, had a modal length of 712 nm. It was transmitted from infected to healthy cocksfoot plants in a non-persistent manner by Myzus persicae and by mechanical inoculation of infective sap extracts containing an anti-oxidant. Apart from cocksfoot, mechanical inoculation of infective sap succeeded in infecting only four of 22 plant species tested. The infectivity of sap extracts containing 0.2% thioglycerol was lost after heating for 10 min at 55oC but not 50oC, storage at room temperature for 48 but not 24 hours, and after diluting 10-2to 10-3. Highly purified preparations of CSV-S particles sedimented as a single component with a sedimentation coefficient of 139S and had a buoyant density in rubidium bromide of 1.31 g/cm3. Virus particles were composed of one protein and one ssRNA species with estimated Mr of 31 000 and 3.2 times 106respectively. In ELISA, an antiserum prepared to CSV-S detected the virus in all aerial parts of infected cocksfoot plants and, when present in the ratio of 1 infected leaf: 1000 healthy leaves. Both CSV-S-infected and -uninfected cocksfoot also contained a previously undescribed virus with isometric particles c. 30 nm in diameter. This virus, named cocksfoot cryptic virus (CCV), was seed-borne in two cvs of cocksfoot tested and its particles contained two dsRNA species of estimated Mr of 1.14 times 106and 1.27 times 106. Despite the fact that particles of CSV-S were largely free from CCV particles following exclusion chromatography on agarose beads prior to immunisation, immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) showed that the antiserum prepared to CSV-S also contained some antibodies to CCV. Evidence from IEM suggested a possible distant serological relationship of CCV to ryegrass and beet (BCV 1 or BCV 2, or both) cryptoviruses, all members of sub-group A of crypto viruses.  相似文献

Cocksfoot cv. Aberystwyth S 26 and timothy cv. Scots were found to be significantly more susceptible to pre-emergence death caused by Fusarium nivale and F. culmorum than were either perennial ryegrass cv. Gremie, or Italian ryegrass cv. RvP. The extent to which each grass was affected by Fusarium at the pre-emergence stage was markedly influenced by both the air temperature and the level of inoculum present in the soil at the time the seeds were sown. Under all conditions, however, cocksfoot and timothy suffered greater reductions in emergence when sown in soil containing either species of Fusarium than did the ryegrasses.
Evidence is presented which suggests that the extreme susceptibility of cocksfoot and timothy to pre-emergence damage is related to the slow germination of the former and the small seed size of the latter.
In addition to their direct effects on seedling numbers both fungi reduced the vigour of those seedlings which did emerge, cocksfoot and timothy being particularly badly affected.  相似文献

Infection of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), Italian ryegrass (Loliummultiflorum L.), and timothy (Phleum pratense L.) by Xanthomonas campestris pv. graminis and Xanthomonas campestris pv. phlei occurred mainly via wounds rather than natural openings. Nevertheless, bacteria were detected by isolation and immunofluorescence in plants sprayed with the pathogen without prior wounding and in plants in which intact ears had been dipped in inocula. High concentrations of bacteria were observed around the stomata of perennial ryegrass and timothy by scanning electron microscopy 48 h after inoculation. Vegetative conversion from grass to forest may influence soil nutrient dynamics and availability. A short-term (40 weeks) glasshouse experiment was carried out to investigate the impacts of ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and radiata pine (Pinus radiata) on soil phosphorus (P) availability in 15 grassland soils collected across New Zealand using 33P isotopic exchange kinetics (IEK) and chemical extraction methods. Results from this study showed that radiata pine took up more P (4.5–33.5 mg P pot–1) than ryegrass (1.1–15.6 mg pot–1) from the soil except in the Temuka soil in which the level of available P (e.g., E 1min Pi, bicarbonate extractable Pi) was very high. Radiata pine tended to be better able to access different forms of soil P, compared with ryegrass. There were no significant differences in the level of water soluble P (Cp, intensity factor) between soils under ryegrass and radiata pine, but the levels of Cp were generally lower compared with original soils due to plant uptake. The growth of both ryegrass and radiata pine resulted in the redistribution of soil P from the slowly exchangeable Pi pool (E > 10m Pi, reduced by 31.8% on the average) to the rapidly exchangeable Pi (E 1min-1d Pi, E 1d-10m Pi) pools in most soils. The values of R/r 1 (the capacity factor) were also generally greater in most soils under radiata pine compared with ryegrass. Specific P mineralisation rates were significantly greater for soils under radiata pine (8.4–21.9%) compared with ryegrass (0.5–10.8%), indicating that the growth of radiata pine enhanced mineralisation of soil organic P. This may partly be ascribed to greater root phosphatase activity for radiata pine than for ryegrass. Plant species × soil type interactions for most soil variables measured indicate that the impacts of plant species on soil P dynamics was strongly influenced by soil properties.  相似文献

Metopolophium festucae is a cold-hardy species: on young oat seedlings nymphs are produced from apterae at temperatures below 6 °C. Alatae are less well adapted to low temperatures: in a laboratory experiment the average daily production of nymphs from apterae was 0·96 at 10·2 °C and 2·71 at 22·8 °C; the corresponding figures for alatae were 0·42 and 1·81. Aphids on oats, wheat and Italian ryegrass have a slightly higher progeny production than on barley, timothy and cocksfoot: the adults produced on the cereals are heavier than those on the grasses. It is postulated that the aphids require a perennial crop on which to overwinter as nymphs or parthenogenetic adults; consequently successful colonization of cereal crops is rare.  相似文献

Faeces containing Trichostrongylus colubriformis and/or Ostertagia circumcincta eggs were used to provide four contaminations in each of 2 years on plots of browntop, Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, tall fescue, lucerne, chicory, cocksfoot, white clover, and prairie grass and in the second year a mixed sward of ryegrass/white clover. Third stage larvae were recovered from faeces and from four strata of herbage, 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5 and >7.5 cm above the soil surface at 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, and 14 weeks after faeces were deposited on the swards. Herbage species had a significant (P &lt; 0.0001) effect on the number of larvae recovered. Greatest numbers of larvae, as indicated by ranking analysis, were recovered from Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, and cocksfoot and lowest numbers from white clover and lucerne. The difference between herbages in numbers of larvae recovered was due to the ‘‘development success’’, the ability of larvae to develop to the infective stage and migrate on to herbage, rather than ‘‘survival’’, the rate of population decline once on the herbage. Faecal degradation was most rapid from white clover and browntop, intermediate from tall fescue, lucerne, prairie grass, cocksfoot, and ryegrass, and slowest from Yorkshire fog swards. The numbers of larvae recovered from herbages were related (r2 = 0.59, P &lt; 0.05) with the faecal mass remaining. A greater proportion of the total larvae recovered from the herbage was recovered from the bottom stratum of Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than from white clover, with the other herbages intermediate, indicating that larvae had greater difficulty migrating up Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than the other herbage species. In most herbage species, despite more larvae being recovered from the lowest stratum, larval density (L3/kg herbage DM) was highest in the top stratum. This study has demonstrated that herbage species can have a significant impact on the population dynamics and vertical migration of T. colubriformis and O. circumcincta larvae.  相似文献

Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.). perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.) and Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.) plantswere grown on deep (75–95 cm) columns of soil in glasshousesand growth rooms with and without irrigation. The temporal N-uptake patterns of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) mixed with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) mixed with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) were determined in successive harvests of herbage within the growth cycles of a ley established near Zürich (Switzerland). Rooting patterns were examined by injecting15N-fertilizer at soil depths ranging from 10 to 40 cm. The results were analyzed to determine the effect of variations in time and depth of N-uptake on the15N-based measurement of N from symbiosis (Nsym) and N from transfer (Ntrans).Grasses in mixture appeared to have deeper rooting systems than grass monocultures, which led to an overestimation of N transfer from white clover to perennial ryegrass if15N was spread on the soil surface.White clover generally lagged behind grass in soil N- uptake. Soil N-uptake of red clover slowed down before that of the grass because % Nsym almost reached 100% during the second half of each growth cycle. However, the effect of these dissimilarities on the seasonal average of %Nsym did not exceed 2%.It is concluded that at the observed high levels of N2 fixation, failure to account for the N-uptake patterns of the test and reference crops only slightly affected the estimates of % Nsym and % Ntrans, and did not invalidate the observed differences between species.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation was measured in monocropped sweet-blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius), lupin intercropped with two ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cultivars or with oats (Avena sativa) on an Andosol soil, using the 15N isotope dilution method. At 117 days after planting and at a mean temperature below 10°C, monocropped lupin derived an average of 92% or 195 kg N ha−1 of its N from N2 fixation. Intercropping lupin with cereals increased (p<0.05) the percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 (% Ndfa) to a mean of 96%. Compared to the monocropped, total N fixed per hectare in intercropped lupin declined approximately 50%, in line with the decrease in seeding rate and dry matter yield. With these high values of N2 fixation, selection of the reference crop was not a problem; all the cereals, intercropped or grown singly produced similar estimates of N2 fixed in lupin. It was deduced from the 15N data that significant N transfer occurred from lupin to intercropped Italian ryegrass but not to intercropped Westerwoldian ryegrass or to oats. Doubling the 15N fertilizer rate from 30 to 60 kg N ha−1 decreased % Ndfa to 86% (p<0.05), but total N fixed was unaltered. These results indicate that lupin has a high potential for N2 fixation at low temperatures, and can maintain higher rates of N2 fixation in soils of high N than many other forage and pasture legumes.  相似文献

Net rates of NO3? and K+ uptake were compared for oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Jet neuf), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv. S23), Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. cv. Augusta) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Fen-man) in flowing solution culture during a 4-day sequence of low-low-high-high natural irradiance. Concentrations of NO3? (10 μM) and K+ (2.5 μM) in solutions were maintained automatically and hourly variation in net uptake of these ions was measured. During the 2 days of low irradiance (<1 MJ m?2 day?1) the uptake rates of both ions by all species were low at <1 mmol NO3?, m?2 h?1 and <0.4 mmol K+ m?2 h?1. Uptake increased in each species during the first day of high irradiance (7.90 MJ m?2 day?1) to >4 mmol NO3? m?2 h?1 and >1.4 mmol K+ m?1 h?1. These higher rates were maintained throughout the following night. The lag-time between maximum irradiance and the onset of the highest acceleration in uptake was greater for NO3? (5–8 h) than for K+ (≤1 h) in rape, wheat and Italian ryegrass. Uptake of NO3?, by perennial ryegrass showed an almost constant acceleration for 18 h following maximum irradiance. In all species the measured maximum inflows (uptake rate per unit root length) of both ions were greater than theoretical maximum potential inflows to a non-competing infinite-sink root in soil, by factors of 7 and 36, respectively, for NO3? and K+, averaged over all species.  相似文献

The impact of photoperiod on the rate and magnitude of N remobilization relative to uptake of inorganic N during the recovery of shoot growth after a severe defoliation was compared over 18 days in two temperate grass species, timothy (Phleum pratense L. cv. Bodin) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds. cv. Salten). Plants were grown in flowing solution culture with N supplied as 20 mM NH4NO3 and pre-treated by extending the 11 h photosynthetically significant light period either by 1 h (short-day or SD plants) or 7 h (long-day or LD plants) of very low light intensity, during the 10 days prior to defoliation. Following a single severe defoliation, 15N-labelled NH4+ or NH4++ NO3? was supplied over a 20-day recovery period under the same SD and LD conditions. Changes in the relative contributions of remobilized N and newly acquired mineral N to shoot regrowth were assessed by sequential harvests. Both absolute and relative rates of N remobilization from root and stubble fractions were higher in LD than SD plants of both species, with the enhancement more acute but of shorter duration in timothy than fescue. Remobilized N was the predominant source of N for shoot regrowth in all treatments between days 0 and 8 after cutting; on average more so for fescue than timothy, because the presence of NO3? reduced the proportional contribution of remobilized N to the regrowth of timothy but not of fescue. Net uptake of mineral N began to recover between days 4 and 6 after cutting, with NO3? uptake restarting 1 or 2 days earlier than NH4+ uptake, even when NH4+ was the only form of N supply. LD timothy plants supplied solely with NH4+ were slowest to resume uptake of mineral N. Supplying NO3? in addition to NH4+ after defoliation promoted shoot regrowth rate but not remobilization of N. Rates of regrowth (shoot dry weight production per plant) were not correlated with rates of N remobilization from stubble either over the short-term (days 0–8) or longer term (days 0–18), interpreted as evidence against a causal dependence of regrowth rate on N remobilization under these conditions. The results are discussed in relation to hypotheses for source/sink-driven rates of N remobilization and their interactions with mineral N uptake following defoliation.  相似文献

A two-year (2015 and 2016) grazing study was established to compare ewe and lamb performance when grazed on a perennial ryegrass only sward compared to more diverse sward types. In that study four sward types were investigated: a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) only sward receiving 163 kg nitrogen per hectare per year (N/ha/yr) (PRG); a perennial ryegrass and white clover (Trifolium repens) sward receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (PRGWC); a six species sward (two grasses (perennial ryegrass and timothy (Phleum pratense)), two legumes (white and red clover (Trifolium pratense)) and two herbs (ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and chicory (Cichorium intybus)) receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (6S); and a nine species sward containing cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), greater birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in addition to the six species listed above, receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (9S). Each sward type was managed as a separate farmlet and stocked with 30 twin-rearing ewes at a stocking rate of 12.5 ewes/ha under rotational grazing management from turnout post-lambing until housing. Lamb live weight was recorded fortnightly and lambs were drafted for slaughter at 45 kg. Ewe live weight and body condition score (BCS) were recorded on five occasions annually. Lamb faecal egg count (FEC) was recorded fortnightly and lambs were treated with anthelmintics when mean lamb FEC per sward type was above 400 eggs per gram. Ewes grazing the 6S and 9S swards had heavier (P < 0.01) live weights and BCS throughout the study than the ewes grazing the PRG sward. Lambs grazing the 6S sward were heavier than lambs grazing all other sward types of 14 weeks old (P < 0.05). Lambs grazing the PRG sward required more days to reach slaughter weight than lambs grazing all other sward types (P < 0.001). Lambs grazing the 6S and 9S swards required fewer anthelmintic treatments than lambs grazing the PRG or PRGWC swards. In conclusion, grazing multispecies swards improved ewe and lamb performance and reduced the requirement for chemical anthelmintics.  相似文献

Summary Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is expected to increase plant productivity and alter plant/plant interactions, but little is known about its effects on symbiotic interactions with microorganisms. Interactions between perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne (a C3 plant), and purpletop grass, Tridens flavus (a C4 plant), and their clavicipitaceous fungal endophytes (Acremonium lolii and Balansia epichloe, respectively) were investigated by growing the grasses under 350 and 650 l l 1 CO2 at two nutrient levels. Infected and uninfected perennial ryegrass responded with increased growth to both CO2 enrichment and nutrient addition. Biomass and leaf area of infected and uninfected plants responded similarly to CO2 enrichment. When growth analysis parameters were calculated, there were significant increases in relative growth rate and net assimilation rate of infected plants compared to uninfected plants, although the differences remained constant across CO2 and nutrient treatments. Growth of purpletop grass did not increase with CO2 enrichment or nutrient addition and there were no significant differences between infected and uninfected plants. CO2 enrichment did not alter the interactions between these two host grasses and their endophytic-fungal symbionts.  相似文献

A 5-month laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to study the immobilization-mineralization of N in soil to which dried or composted 15N labelled ryegrass (Lolium italicum L.) had been added. Cellulose was added to dried ryegrass to give a C/N ratio similar to that of composted ryegrass. Exchangeable NH4 + and NO3 , HCl-hydrolyzable N forms, microbial biomass N, NaOH-soluble and insoluble N were monitored during incubation. Dried ryegrass brought about a significant increase in total and labelled exchangeable NH4 +, while a rapid immobilization and a subsequent slow release of exchangeable NH4 + was observed in soil with composted ryegrass, together with a resistance to degradation of the labelled humic substances. Compounds synthesized during the composting process and resistant to microbial decomposition probably caused an increase in the amino-acid fraction of soil. These findings suggest that composting can reduce the risk of N losses.  相似文献

A Scottish isolate of cocksfoot streak virus (CSV-S) was found to have flexuous filamentous particles which, in sap of infected cocksfoot plants, had a modal length of 712 nm. It was transmitted from infected to healthy cocksfoot plants in a non-persistent manner by Myzus persicae and by mechanical inoculation of infective sap extracts containing an anti-oxidant. Apart from cocksfoot, mechanical inoculation of infective sap succeeded in infecting only four of 22 plant species tested. The infectivity of sap extracts containing 0.2% thioglycerol was lost after heating for 10 min at 55oC but not 50oC, storage at room temperature for 48 but not 24 hours, and after diluting 10-2 to 10-3. Highly purified preparations of CSV-S particles sedimented as a single component with a sedimentation coefficient of 139S and had a buoyant density in rubidium bromide of 1.31 g/cm3. Virus particles were composed of one protein and one ssRNA species with estimated Mr of 31 000 and 3.2 times 106 respectively. In ELISA, an antiserum prepared to CSV-S detected the virus in all aerial parts of infected cocksfoot plants and, when present in the ratio of 1 infected leaf: 1000 healthy leaves. Both CSV-S-infected and -uninfected cocksfoot also contained a previously undescribed virus with isometric particles c. 30 nm in diameter. This virus, named cocksfoot cryptic virus (CCV), was seed-borne in two cvs of cocksfoot tested and its particles contained two dsRNA species of estimated Mt of 1.14 times 106 and 1.27 times 106. Despite the fact that particles of CSV-S were largely free from CCV particles following exclusion chromatography on agarose beads prior to immunisation, immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) showed that the antiserum prepared to CSV-S also contained some antibodies to CCV. Evidence from IEM suggested a possible distant serological relationship of CCV to ryegrass and beet (BCV 1 or BCV 2, or both) cryptoviruses, all members of sub-group A of cryptoviruses.  相似文献
