It is hypothesised that the visual performance of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, will be impaired by strenuous exercise as a result of metabolic stress (blood lactacidosis) that activates the Root effect and limits the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood flowing to the eye. The ability to resolve high contrast objects on a moving background, as a measure of visual performance, was quantified pre- and post-exercise using the optomotor response. Strenuous exercise induced a metabolic acidosis (8.0 mmol l(-1) blood lactate) and a significant red cell swelling response but no change in the optomotor response threshold (120 min of arc) was observed. Beta-adrenergic blockade (propranolol) abolished post-exercise red cell swelling but optomotor response thresholds were still maintained at 120 min of arc despite a significant blood lactate load (7.8 mmol l(-1)). The choroid rete mirabile of the trout is extremely well developed (rete area:eye area = 0.39) and may maintain visual performance by ensuring a relatively direct supply of oxygen to the central regions of the avascular retina. Exercised fish under beta-adrenergic blockade exhibited an enhanced optomotor response at 240-300 min of arc. Assuming that these responses reflect "tunnel vision", adrenergic regulation of red cell function may preserve a high ocular PO(2) gradient that satisfies the oxygen demand of peripheral retinal cells.  相似文献

The effects of adrenergic-stimulation upon the oxygen-binding capacity of fish erythrocytes have been investigated. The oxygen capacity of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), erythrocytes was lowered by 44% on extracellular acidification (the so-called 'Root effect'). Addition of isoproterenol at 20° Ccaused an acid shift of the curve relating oxygen capacity to pH0 by approximately 0.2 pH units, a value which was similar to the change in intracellular pH caused by adrenergic stimulation (Cossins & Kilbey Journal of Experimental Biology , 148 , 303–312, 1990). Moreover, when plotted as a function of pHi, the curves for control and adrenalinstimulated erythrocytes were superimposable suggesting that the adrenergic shift in the Root curve was a result of the change in pHi caused by activation of the adrenergic Na+/H+ exchanger.
A similarly large adrenergic shift in the Root curve was observed for pike, Esox lucius L., erythrocytes, though not for erythrocytes of carp, Cyprinus carpio L., and tench, Tinea tinea (L.). The pH for the mid-point of the Root effect in pike erythrocytes was distinctly more acid than for trout, but in both cases corresponded closely with the optimal pH for the adrenergic Na+/H+ exchange mechanism. This suggests a link between the functional characteristics of the exchanger and the oxygen-binding properties of haemoglobin.  相似文献

Many fish hemoglobins exhibit a marked dependence of oxygen affinity and cooperativity on proton concentration, called Root effect. Both tertiary and quaternary effects have been evoked to explain the allosteric regulation brought about by protons in fish hemoglobins. However, no general rules have emerged so far. We carried out a complementary crystallographic and microspectroscopic characterization of ligand binding to crystals of deoxy-hemoglobin from the Antarctic fish Trematomus bernacchii (HbTb) at pH 6.2 and pH 8.4. At low pH ligation has negligible structural effects, correlating with low affinity and absence of cooperativity in oxygen binding. At high pH, ligation causes significant changes at the tertiary structural level, while preserving structural markers of the T state. These changes mainly consist in a marked displacement of the position of the switch region CD corner towards an R-like position. The functional data on T-state crystals validate the relevance of the crystallographic observations, revealing that, differently from mammalian Hbs, in HbTb a significant degree of cooperativity in oxygen binding is due to tertiary conformational changes, in the absence of the T–R quaternary transition. Extensive application of pesticide in agricultural field affects the enzymatic activity of non-target animals, including fishes. In this study, the impact of sublethal concentration of fenvalerate on marker enzymes of freshwater Zebra fish was evaluated. Pesticide-induced stress can specifically affect non target fishes, through elevated level of reactive oxygen species which is responsible for biochemical, cell metabolism and physiological activities. The oxidative stress mediated by fenvalerate at sub lethal concentrations after 28 days of exposure of Zebra fish. Following 28 days of exposure of pesticide, catalase, superoxide dismutase, aspartate amino transferases, alanine amino transferase, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase were assessed. Results revealed reduction of superoxide dismutase activity after 28 days of exposure in sub lethal concentration of fenvalerate in liver and gills. In liver, catalase activity was found to be less in fenvalerate exposed fish than control fish. In liver, increase of 75.75% aspartate amino transferase and 38% increase in alanine amino transferase in gills. SGPT activity was relatively higher than SGOT suggests more contribution of phyruvalate than oxaloacetate formation. Fenvalerate induced changes in acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity in the liver and gills of Zebra fish after four weeks of exposure. Fenvalerate induced expression of various stress proteins in gill, liver, followed by muscle. Some proteins lost its intensity due to fenvalerate toxicity. Result revealed that enzyme assays and SDS-PAGE analysis for protein subunits determination is relevant tool to monitor stress in freshwater ecosystem. The findings suggest that in monitoring fenvalerate toxicity programme, enzyme activities can be potent diagnostic tool for fenvalerate induced toxicity.  相似文献

Aim We examined data on corals and reef fishes to determine how particular local habitat types contribute to variation in community structure across regions covering gradients in species richness and how consistent this was over time. Location Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia. Methods We compared large‐scale (1300 km), long‐term (11 years) data on fishes and corals that were collected annually at fixed sites in three habitats (inshore, mid‐shelf and outer‐shelf reefs) and six regions (latitudinal sectors) along a gradient of regional species richness in both communities. We used canonical approaches to partition variation in community structure (sites × species abundance data matrices) into components associated with habitat, region and time and Procrustes analyses to assess the degree of concordance between coral and fish community structure. Results Remarkably similar patterns emerged for both fish and coral communities occupying the same sites. Reefs that had similar coral communities also had similar fish communities. The fraction of the community data that could be explained by regional effects, independent of pure habitat effects, was similar in both fish (33%) and coral (36.9%) communities. Pure habitat effects were slightly greater in the fish (31.3%) than in the coral (20.1%) community. Time explained relatively little variation (fish = 7.9%, corals = 9.6%) compared with these two spatial factors. Conclusions Our results indicate either that fish and coral communities were structured in similar ways by processes associated with region, habitat and time, or that the variation in fish community structure tracked variation associated with the coral communities at these sites and thereby reflects an indirect link between the environment and the structure of fish communities mediated by corals. Irrespective of the causes of such commonality, we demonstrate that community structure, not just species richness, can be related to both habitat differences and regional setting simultaneously.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to elucidate the impact of physical activity during the growth period as well as on oxidative stress and antioxidative potential in adulthood. The experimental animals used were four-week old male Wistar rats, which were randomly divided into three groups. The exercise loads were as follows: control (CON), treadmill exercise (TE), and jumping exercise (JE). The exercise was performed at the same time of day, at a frequency of five days per week, for eight weeks. Derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROSs) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) were measured during periods of rest prior to commencement of the experiment and after the experiment. Analysis was conducted using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Schaffer’s multiple comparison procedure and the significance level was set at p?相似文献

Prior exercise potentiates the thermic effect of a carbohydrate meal. The purpose of this study was to determine if meal size or feeding pattern influences this response. Two groups of healthy, normal-weight young women exercised for 45 min on a cycle ergometer at 70% of maximal aerobic capacity. Once aerobic capacity returned to pre-exercise baseline, the thermic effect of food (TEF) was determined by indirect calorimetry over a 2-h period. One group of subjects ingested a 2510-kJ meal and the other a 5020-kJ meal. As a control, subjects ingested the test meal without prior exercise. In addition, subjects ingesting the 5020–kJ meal were studied for an additional 2 h. In a separate trial, these subjects ingested a 5020-kJ meal in two equal portions after a bout of exercise, the second portion 120 min after the first. TEF was less for the 2510-kJ meal compared with the 5020-kJ meal for both the control [mean (SE), 76 (17) vs 158 (19) kJ · 2h–1,P < 0.01), and prior exercise [124 (23) vs 197 (24) kJ · 2h–1,P<0.01) trials. However, the same increment in TEF resulted from the prior bout of exercise [48 (9) vs 40 (8) kJ · 2h for 2510-and 5020-kJ meals, respectively). TEF was 31 % lower when the 5020-kJ meal was given in two portions compared with one [281 (30) vs 369 (41) kJ · 4h–1, P < 0.05]. No difference in TEF was found between the first and second 2510-kJ portion. The results suggest that potentiation of TEF by prior exercise is not influenced by caloric density or energy content of the meal. Rather, meal volume and hence meal frequency is a greater determinant of postexercise TEF.  相似文献

A meta-analysis was used to examine the independent and interactive effects of dietary restriction, endurance exercise training and gender on resting metabolic rate (RMR). Sixty different group means (covering 650 subjects) were identified from the scientific literature and subjected to meta-analysis techniques. Collectively (i.e., all groups combined), body weight loss was greater (P < 0.05) for men ( 18 kg) than for women ( 12 kg). There were no statistically significant exercise training or gender effects on RMR during weight loss. Collectively (i.e., all groups combined), dietary restriction resulted in a – 0.59 kJ min–1 ( – 12%) decrease in RMR (P < 0.05). When normalized to body weight, RMR was reduced by less than 2% (P < 0.05). These data suggest that exercise training does not differentially affect RMR during diet-induced weight loss. In addition, decreases in resting metabolism appear to be proportional to the loss of the metabolically active tissue.  相似文献

Body cooling before exercise (i.e. pre-cooling) reduces physiological strain in humans during endurance exercise in temperate and warm environments, usually improving performance. This study examined the effectiveness of pre-cooling humans by ice-vest and cold (3 degrees C) air, with (LC) and without (LW) leg cooling, in reducing heat strain and improving endurance performance in the heat (35 degrees C, 60% RH). Nine habitually-active males completed three trials, involving pre-cooling (LC and LW) or no pre-cooling (CON: 34 degrees C air) before 35-min cycle exercise: 20 min at approximately 65% VO2peak then a 15-min work-performance trial. At exercise onset, mean core (Tc, from oesophagus and rectum) and skin temperatures, forearm blood flow (FBF), heart rate (HR), and ratings of exertion, body temperature and thermal discomfort were lower in LW and LC than CON (P<0.05). They remained lower at 20 min [e.g. Tc: CON 38.4+/-0.2 (+/-S.E.), LW 37.9+/-0.1, and LC 37.8+/-0.1 degrees C; HR: 177+/-3, 163+/-3 and 167+/-3 b.p.m.), except that FBF was equivalent (P=0.10) between CON (15.5+/-1.6) and LW (13.6+/-1.0 ml.100 ml tissue(-1) x min(-1)). Subsequent power output was higher in LW (2.95+/-0.24) and LC (2.91+/-0.25) than in CON (2.52+/-0.28 W kg(-1), P=0.00, N=8), yet final Tc remained lower. Pre-cooling by ice-vest and cold air effectively reduced physiological and psychophysical strain and improved endurance performance in the heat, irrespective of whether thighs were warmed or cooled.  相似文献

[Purpose]We determined the effect of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) after an exercise session on exercise performance on the following morning.[Methods]Eleven male athletes performed either a normal sleep trial (CON) or a PSD trial. On the first day (day 1), all subjects performed an exercise session consisting of 90 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max) followed by 100 drop jumps. Maximal strength (MVC) was evaluated before and after exercise. In the CON trial, the sleep duration was 23:00–7:00, while in the PSD trial, the sleep duration was shortened to 40% of the regular sleep duration. On the following morning (day 2), MVC, the metabolic responses during 20 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max), and time to exhaustion (TTE) at 85% V˙O2max were evaluated.[Results]On day 2, neither the MVC nor  V˙O2 during 20 min of running differed significantly between the two trials. However, the respiratory exchange ratio was significantly lower in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01). Moreover, the TTE was significantly shorter in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01).[Conclusion]A single night of PSD after an exercise session significantly decreased endurance performance without significantly changing muscle strength or cardiopulmonary response.  相似文献

The water relations of two tree species in the Euphorbiaceae werecompared to test in part a hypothesis that the forest understorey plays anintegral role in drought response. At Danum, Sabah, the relatively commonspecies Dimorphocalyx muricatus is associated with ridgeswhilst another species, Mallotus wrayi, occurs widely bothon ridges and lower slopes. Sets of subplots within two 4 -hapermanent plots in this lowland dipterocarp rain forest, were positioned onridges and lower slopes. Soil water potentials were recorded in1995–1997,and leaf water potentials were measured on six occasions. Soil water potentialson the ridges (–0.047 MPa) were significantly lower than onthe lower slopes (–0.012 MPa), but during the driest periodin May 1997 they fell to similarly low levels on both sites (–0.53MPa). A weighted 40-day accumulated rainfall index was developedtomodel the soil water potentials. At dry times, D.muricatus(ridge) had significantly higher pre-dawn (–0.21 v.–0.57 MPa) and mid-day (–0.59 v.–1.77 MPa) leaf water potentials than M.wrayi (mean of ridge and lower slope). Leaf osmotic potentials ofM. wrayi on the ridges were lower (–1.63MPa) than on lower slopes (–1.09 MPa), withthose for D. muricatus being intermediate (–1.29MPa): both species adjusted osmotically between wet and dry times.D. muricatus trees were more deeply rooted thanM. wrayi trees (97 v. 70cm). M. wrayi trees had greaterlateral root cross-sectional areas than D. muricatus treesalthough a greater proportion of this sectional area for D.muricatus was further down the soil profile. D.muricatus appeared to maintain relatively high water potentialsduring dry periods because of its access to deeper water supplies and thus itlargely avoided drought effects, but M. wrayi seemed to bemore affected yet tolerant of drought and was more plastic in its response. Theinteraction between water availability and topography determines these species'distributions and provides insights into how rain forests can withstandoccasional strong droughts.  相似文献

Using manipulated patch reefs with combinations of varying live‐coral cover (low, medium and high) and structural complexity (low and high), common community metrics (abundance, diversity, richness and community composition) collected through standard underwater visual census techniques were compared with exhaustive collections using a fish anaesthetic (clove oil). This study showed that reef condition did not influence underwater visual census estimates at a community level, but reef condition can influence the detectability of some small and cryptic species and this may be exacerbated if surveys are conducted on a larger scale.  相似文献

Endurance for dynamic exercise, cardiac output, blood pressure, heart rate, ventilation, and oxygen consumption was measured in eight individuals with paraplegia at the end of 4-min bouts of exercise on a friction braked cycle ergometer. Movement of the subjects' legs was induced by electrically stimulating the quadriceps, gluteus maximus and hamstring muscles with a computer-controlled biphasic square--wave current at a frequency of 30 Hz. The friction braked cycle ergometer was pedalled at work rates which varied between 0 and 40 W. Measurements were repeated after 3 and 6 months to assess the affect of training. After 3 months of training it was found that endurance increased from 8 min at a work rate of 0 W to 30 min at a work rate of 40 W. Compared to the cardiovascular responses in non-paralyzed subjects, computerized cycle ergometry was found to be associated with higher relative stresses for a given level of absolute work. Mean blood pressure, for example, increased by over 30% during maximal work in individuals with paralysis compared to the typical response obtained for able-bodied subjects. Analysis of the data showed that instead of the 20-30% metabolic efficiency commonly reported for cycle ergometry, the calculated metabolic efficiency during computer-controlled cycle ergometry was only 3.6%.  相似文献

Energy metabolism fuels swimming and other biological processes. We compared the swimming performance and energy metabolism within and across eight freshwater fish species. Using swim tunnel respirometers, we measured the standard metabolic rate (SMR) and maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and calculated the critical swimming speed (Ucrit). We accounted for body size, metabolic traits, and some morphometric ratios in an effort to understand the extent and underlying causes of variation. Body mass was largely the best predictor of swimming capacity and metabolic traits within species. Moreover, we found that predictive models using total length or SMR, in addition to body mass, significantly increased the explained variation of Ucrit and MMR in certain fish species. These predictive models also underlined that, once body mass has been accounted for, Ucrit can be independently affected by total length or MMR. This study exemplifies the utility of multiple regression models to assess within-species variability. At interspecific level, our results showed that variation in Ucrit can partly be explained by the variation in the interrelated traits of MMR, fineness, and muscle ratios. Among the species studied, bleak Alburnus alburnus performed best in terms of swimming performance and efficiency. By contrast, pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus showed very poor swimming performance, but attained lower mass-specific cost of transport (MCOT) than some rheophilic species, possibly reflecting a cost reduction strategy to compensate for hydrodynamic disadvantages. In conclusion, this study provides insight into the key factors influencing the swimming performance of fish at both intra- and interspecific levels.  相似文献

[Purpose]

In this study, the authors have intended to investigate the effects that the exercise training and the intake of the water extract from propolis have on the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

[Methods]

For this purpose, the exercise training (70% VO2max treadmill running exercise for 60min)of 5 times per week for six weeks and the intake (50mg/kg/day) of the water extract from propolis were performed by separating the experimental animals (SD rats, n=32) into CON(n=8) group, CON+Ex(n=8), PA(n=8), and PA+Ex(n=8).

[Results]

As a result, the following conclusions were obtained: The concentration of the blood glucose and insulin of the CON+Ex group and PA+Ex group which are the exercise parallel group were significantly decreased in comparison with the control group, whereas if comparing the glycogen concentration in skeletal muscle and liver tissue between the exercise parallel group and the CON group, the former showed significantly high value in comparison with the latter (p < .05). In the case of the activity of the antioxidant enzyme in the skeletal muscle and the liver tissue, the activities of SOD, GPX and CAT in the gastrocnemius muscle tissue of the experimental animals showed significantly high value in PA+Ex group in comparison with other experimental groups (p < .05). In addition, the SOD activity in the liver tissue showed that only PA+Ex group was significantly increased, whereas GDX activity showed significantly higher value in CON+Ex group and PA group than CON group (p < .05). However, the activity of CAT in the liver tissue showed that there is no difference between the experimental groups. As a result that measured the concentration of MDA in order to evaluate the damage level of the tissue by oxygen free radicals, the difference between the groups in the liver tissue was not shown, while it was shown that only PA+Ex group in the skeletal muscle tissue was significantly decreased in comparison with other experimental groups (p < .05).

[Conclusion]

Taken together the above findings, it is considered that the parallel treatment of the exercise training and the water extract from propolis can not only increase the use of glycogen of the skeletal muscle and liver tissue, but also it can give the effect to suppress the creation of active oxygen by inducing the activity of the antioxidant enzyme in the body, and in the future, the possibility as the exercise supplements and the antioxidant of the water-soluble propolis are expected.  相似文献

In a previous article (Yallop and Svendsen 2001), recombinant CHO and BHK cell lines, expressing the human glucagon receptor and the gastric inhibitory peptide receptor, respectively, showed reduced growth rates and altered nutrient utilisation when grown with increasing concentrations of G418. This response was associated with an increased expression of the neo r protein, while expression of the recombinant membrane receptors remained unaltered. The metabolic response was characterised in both cell lines by an increase in the specific rate of glutamine utilisation and in CHO cells by a decrease in the yield of lactate from glucose, suggesting a change in the flux of glucose through central metabolism. The aim of this study was to further elucidate these metabolic changes by determining the activity and relative expression of key enzymes involved in glucose and glutamine metabolism. For both CHO and BHK cells, there was an increase in the activity of glutaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthetase, suggesting an increased flux through the glutaminolysis pathway. The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and pyruvate carboxylase in CHO cells was also increased whilst lactate dehydrogenase activity remained unaltered, suggesting an increased flux to the pentose phosphate pathway and TCA cycle, respectively. The activity of these enzymes in BHK cells was unchanged. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that expression levels of glutaminase and pyruvate carboxylase were the same with and without G418, indicating that the differences in activities were likely due to post-translational modifications. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to find out whether a low-carbohydrate diet (L-CHO) affects: (1) the capacity for all-out anaerobic exercise, and (2) hormonal and metabolic responses to this type of exercise. To this purpose, eight healthy subjects underwent a 30-s bicycle Wingate test preceded by either 3 days of a controlled mixed diet (130 kJ/kg of body mass daily, 50% carbohydrate, 30% fat, 20% protein) or 3 days of an isoenergetic L-CHO diet (up to 5% carbohydrate, 50% fat, 45% protein) in a randomized order. Before and during 1 h after the exercise venous blood samples were taken for measurement of blood lactate (LA), β-hydroxybutyrate (β-HB), glucose, adrenaline (A), noradrenaline (NA) and insulin levels. Oxygen consumption (O2) was also determined. It was found that the L-CHO diet diminished the mean power output during the 30-s exercise bout [533 (7) W vs 581 (7) W, P < 0.05] without changing the maximal power attained during the first or second 5-s interval of the exercise. In comparison with the data obtained after the consumption of a mixed diet, after the consumption of a L-CHO diet resting plasma concentrations of β-HB [2.38 (0.18) vs 0.23 (0.01) mmol · l−1, P < 0.001] and NA [4.81 (0.68) vs 2.2 (0.31) nmol · l−1, P < 0.05] were higher, while glucose [4.6 (0.1) vs 5.7 (0.2) mmol · l−1, P < 0.05] and insulin concentrations [11.9 (0.9) vs 21.8 (1.8) mU · l−1] were lower. The 1-h post-exercise excess of O2 [9.1 (0.25) vs 10.6 (0.25) l, P < 0.05], and blood LA measured 3 min after the exercise [9.5 (0.4) vs 10.6 (0.5) mmol · l−1, P < 0.05] were lower following the L-CHO treatment, whilst plasma NA and A concentrations reached higher values [2.24 (0.40) vs 1.21 (0.13) nmol · l−1 and 14.30 (1.41) vs 8.20 (1.31) nmol · l−1, P < 0.01, respectively]. In subjects on the L-CHO diet, the plasma β-HB concentration decreased quickly after exercise, attaining ≈30% of the pre-exercise value within 60 min, while insulin and glucose levels were elevated. The main conclusions of this study are: (1) a L-CHO diet is detrimental to anaerobic work capacity, possibly because of a reduced muscle glycogen store and decreased rate of glycolysis; (2) reduced carbohydrate intake for 3 days enhances activity of the sympathoadrenal system at rest and after exercise. Objectives:Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) compromises bone health purportedly due to lower levels of physical activity. The potential of an exercise intervention to improve bone health parameters in adolescents with DCD has not previously been studied. This study thus aimed to determine the impact of a multimodal exercise intervention on bone health in this population at-risk of secondary osteoporosis.Methods:Twenty-eight adolescents (17 male, 11 female) aged between 12-17 years (Mage=14.1) with DCD participated in a twice weekly, 13-week generalised multimodal exercise intervention. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography scans of the tibia (4% and 66%) were performed over a six month period. Generalised estimating equations were used to examine the impact of fitness measures on bone parameters over time. Results:An overall improvement trend was observed for bone health, with significant increases at the 66% tibial site for bone mass (4.12% increase, dcohen=0.23, p=0.010) and cortical area (5.42% increase, η2 =12.09, p=0.014). Lower body fitness measures were significantly associated with improvements in bone health parameters, tempered by the degree of motor impairment. Conclusion:A multimodal exercise intervention may be effective in improving bone health of adolescents with DCD. Given the impact of motor impairments, gains may be greater over an extended period of study.  相似文献

Knowledge of the responses of root systems in horizoned heterogeneous soil is vital to optimise uptake of water and nutrients to maximise crop productivity. We explored the interacting effects of soil bulk density and texture on the development of root systems in tomato. Two main techniques were employed, X-ray micro-Computed Tomography (μCT), to provide non-destructive, three-dimensional (3D) images of root systems in situ and destructive root washing followed by WinRHIZO® scanning. Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Ailsa Craig plants were grown in soil columns for 10 days to measure the effect of soil compaction on selected root traits. Treatments included bulk density (1.2–1.6 Mg m−3), soil texture (loamy sand and clay loam) and the effects of layering. The effect of bulk density on root growth was greatest 3 days after transplanting (DAT) in both soil types. The effect of soil texture was not apparent at this stage, but was significant at 10 DAT for most root and shoot variables. The influence of bulk density differed between soil types as increasing compaction promoted plant growth in clay loam but retarded root growth in loamy sand.We observed that at 3 DAT root growth is primarily influenced by bulk density but by 10 DAT a switch in the processes regulating root growth occurs and the texture of the soil becomes very influential. Future investigations of root growth must consider soil physical properties individually and at specific time points, as their importance changes as the root system becomes established. Here we have demonstrated both positive and negative impacts across a wide range of bulk density treatments in different soil textures on root growth. This illustrates the importance of understanding the complex nature of root–soil interactions, especially for agricultural practices such as seedbed preparation.  相似文献
